Abstract:The soiling behaviour of multiple solar PV arrays on multi-storey building rooftop was explored using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The CFD simulation study employed the SST k–ω turbulence model together with the discrete phase model. A grid independency analysis was done to determine the mesh size that is adequate for the simulation study. Three main parameters were investigated in this study on five rows of solar PV arrays and these were wind speed, dust particle size and tilt angle. Airflow characteristics on the solar PV arrays were evaluated and analysed on their influence on soiling. The study revealed that the PV arrays located at the front experience less soiling compared to those located at the rear although there was a small difference of 0.16% in the soiling rate. An average soiling rate of 15.77% was experienced on all the five PV arrays used in the simulation studies. The overall percentage soiling from the front row to the last row was found to be, respectively, 15.85%, 15.82%, 15.77%, 15.74% and 15.69%. A predictive model was developed and had a coefficient of determination, R2 of 96.82% which could accurately predict overall soiling on the PV arrays.

Abstract:The influence of installation and environmental parameters on dust particle deposition behavior on solar photovoltaic collectors were investigated using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation. Parameters including tilt, height of installation, dust particle size and wind speed were investigated. Modeling of wind flow on the building and the photovoltaic array was achieved using the Shear Stress Transport k-ω turbulence model. The discrete phase model was adopted for dust motion prediction and a model was developed to assess the impact of dust accumulation on the performance of the photovoltaic array. The study revealed that rooftop installations have less dust deposition unlike the ground-mounted installations. The wind flow characteristics on rooftop installations are greatly affected by the building while on ground mounted installations wind flow is only influenced by the tilt of the solar photovoltaic collector. Different tilt angles, wind speeds and particle sizes had different deposition characteristics. The lower impact velocities experienced on ground mounted Photovoltaic (PV) arrays resulted in more deposition for smaller sized (10µm) dust particles compared to the larger sized (50µm and 150µm) particles. On rooftop installations, dust particle size of 150µm had the most deposition at a velocity of 5m/s and hence it resulted in a 22.61% reduction in solar photovoltaic efficiency while the least reduction in efficiency of 1.32% was recorded at 15m/s and 10µm size dust particles. The tilt angles of 0o and 22.5o had large sized turbulent eddies compared to the tilt of 45o. The study revealed that ground mounted photovoltaic arrays had more dust deposition compared to rooftop mounted photovoltaics.

Thus, it is very important to orient the solar modules at optimum tilt angle and azimuth angle for any given location because they are most efficient when they are perpendicular to the sun's rays. Abstract:The dust deposition behaviours of ground-mounted solar photovoltaic (PV) panels and their effects on the PV efficiency were numerically investigated. The shear stress transport k-ω turbulence model with the inlet user-defined function profiles and the discrete particle model were used to predict the wind flow fields and the dust deposition rates of a PV panel. A grid independence study was conducted, and the mean pressure coefficient was validated with the related experimental data. The effects of the different dust particle diameters and the different tilt angles of the PV panels on the dust deposition characteristics were investigated carefully. The results showed the dust deposition rates of a PV panel were considerably affected by the different tilt angles. The dust deposition rates were considerably higher for the upward PV installations than for the downward ones. Moreover, the dust deposition rates were greater when the solar PV panel was more horizontal with the ground. The peak deposition rates were observed for the 150-μm dust particles for all of the tilted PV panel angles. The maximum deposition rates were 14.28%, 13.53%, 6.79% and 9.78% for the tilted PV panel angles of 25°, 40°, 140° and 155°, respectively. Moreover, the main deposition mechanisms of the solar PV panel were analysed and discussed for the different dust particle sizes and PV panel installation angles. Finally, an empirical model was developed for estimating the PV output reductions caused by the dust deposition for different tilt angles, which could be applied in practical engineering applications.

Abstract:The present work aims at the characterization of the dust particles in South India through an image analysis of glass samples inclined at a tilt of 0° and 13° for four different exposure periods (approximately 30 to 40 days/exposure period). It aims as well at the study of the different factors influencing the accuracy of the image analysis of dust particles. The analysis of the shape factor reveals that the dust particles on tilted surface (13°) have regular shapes, and irregular shapes are more observed in horizontal surfaces. The size analysis of the dust particles with magnification of 20 × has revealed that the size distribution is in the range of 0–4 μm but more concentrated in the range of 0–1 μm. However, with 10 × magnification, larger particles are more detected. Furthermore, average results from three sample images seem to be more precise and representative than results from two images. The fractional coverage area of the dust particles on the sample has been calculated and compared with the transmittance losses. These two variables are found to be proportional with an R 2 of 53%. Nevertheless, the comparison showed again that three images give better results with an R 2 of 75% against 11% for two images. The results obtained in this study are very useful for the development of high precision soiling sensors that are based on image analysis and outdoor soiling microscopes, which are the main components for an efficient and economic cleaning of solar PV modules.

Abstract:The deposition mechanism of dust on photovoltaic modules plays a key role in predicting the dust amount, determining dust removal techniques, and cleaning frequency. In this paper, a prediction model for the adhesion and erosion of dust particles was established to address the uneven dust distribution on photovoltaic modules. The proposed model was validated through an experiment of dust deposition, which was set in the low-speed section of a wind tunnel. Three conditions of the dust deposition process were numerically investigated, while varying different wind speeds, array row spacings, dust particle sizes, and wind direction. Results showed that wind speed was the main factor of dust deposition amount, and the change in wind speed and dust particle size had little influence on the distribution of dust deposition. Meanwhile, wind direction and array row spacing distinctly influenced the dust distribution. Increasing the row spacing induced relatively uniform dust distribution on the photovoltaic modules.

Abstract:Solar photovoltaic power plants are ideally located in regions with high insolation levels. Photovoltaic performance is affected by high cell temperatures, soiling, mismatch and other balance-of-systems related losses. It is crucial to understand the significance of each of these losses on system performance. Soiling, highly dependent on installation conditions, is a complex performance issue to accurately quantify. The settlement of dust on panel surfaces may or may not be uniform depending on local terrain and environmental factors such as ambient temperature, wind and rainfall. It is essential to investigate the influence of dust settlement on the operating characteristics of photovoltaic systems to better understand losses in performance attributable to soiling.The current–voltage (I–V) characteristics of photovoltaic panels reveal extensive information to support degradation analysis of the panels. This paper attempts to understand performance losses due to dust through a dynamic study into the I–V characteristics of panels under varying soiling conditions in an outdoor experimental test-bed. Further, the results of an indoor study simulating the performance of photovoltaic panels under different dust deposition regimes are discussed in this paper.

Abstract:The performance of solar photovoltaic systems is impacted by dust accumulation, raising maintenance concerns and discouraging wider adoption to accelerate decarbonization pathways. This research investigates the influence of environmental dynamics on dust accumulation based on several locations, considering weather conditions, seasonality, and angular installation variations, over a three-month period. Low-iron glass coupons were employed to collect on-site soiling from four different locations: agricultural, residential, industrial, and desert. The samples collected were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for morphology, X-ray diffraction (XRD) for mineralogy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) for elemental analysis, spectrophotometry for optical properties, and I–V tracing for efficiency analysis. The data were processed using ANFIS techniques to extract the maximum power point (MPP) and reduce the power losses. The results showed significant differences in the dust properties across the sites, influenced by the topography, weather conditions, and human activity. The measurements revealed a decrease in transmittance of up to 17.98%, resulting in power losses of up to 22.66% after three months. The findings highlight the necessity for tailored maintenance strategies to mitigate the impact of human activities and site-specific factors on performance. This could be employed in developing predictive models providing valuable insights for sustaining solar energy systems.

Abstract:Advanced knowledge of PV soiling can aid in the economic profitability of PV plants and efficient generation. This study introduces a novel approach for evaluating energy losses from soiling deposition on PV modules. Experimental investigations conducted under real outdoor conditions in Jaipur (India) were used to validate the model's accuracy, demonstrating close agreement (with MAPE < 3.6%). Annual soiling trends were also investigated for seven cities reflecting diverse climatic zones (hot-dry, warm-humid, composite, temperate, and cold) and pollutant (PM10) concentrations. The proposed model was also tested with three different cleaning thresholds using rainfall intensities of 1, 3, and 5 mm/day and energy yield reductions due to soiling were simulated. Consequently, the findings of this study underscore the significance of seasonal variations in soiling profiles for different cities and, thus, highlight the need to develop location-specific cleaning strategies for PV systems that also account for the soiling removal due to rain events. The significant contribution of this research is a simplistic modeling approach that addresses the relationship of PV soiling with the input parameters such as wind speed (WS), relative humidity (RH), rainfall, particulate matter (PM10), and tilt angle. Hence, the proposed method can calculate soiling losses worldwide irrespective of geographical differences.

Abstract:In recent years, there has been an increased focus on developing and utilizing renewable energy resources due to several factors, including environmental concerns, rising fuel costs, and the limited supply of conventional fossil fuels. The most appealing green energy conversion technology is solar energy, and its efficient application can help the world achieve Sustainable Development Goal 7: Access to affordable, clean energy. Irradiance, latitude, longitude, tilt angle, and orientation are a few variables that affect the functioning of a solar photovoltaic (PV) system. Additionally, environmental factors like dust accumulation and soiling of panel surfaces impact the cost of maintaining and producing electricity from a PV system. Dust characteristics (kind, size, shape, and meteorological elements), one of the largest factors affecting PV panel performance, need to be investigated to devise specific solutions for efficiently harnessing solar energy. The essential findings of ongoing investigations on dust deposition on the surface of PV structures and various mitigating measures to tackle soiling issues are presented in this review study. This comprehensive assessment critically evaluates the current research on the soiling effect and PV system performance improvement techniques to determine the academic community's future research priorities.

Abstract:Photovoltaic panel output is affected by various factors like solar isolation, temperature, dust, shading, mounting. Among all these factors dust is a prominent factor which greatly reduces panel efficiency. With increase in the quantity of dust both efficiency and power output of the module reduces. As the mass of dust deposition increases, power output and the efficiency of the module decreases. Dust particles are of different shapes and sizes. PV panels installed on ground or roof top are subjected to dust all the time. The amount and type of dust deposition depends on tilt angle, locations, surroundings nearby, rainfall pattern of that area, maintenance method of the installer. PV plant nearby any industry giving out lot of fumes and smokes will have heavy dust deposition over its top surface. Similarly, PV plants located near areas where roads are not concrete can cause dust deposition on its panels. Manual maintenance is labor costing and less efficient. In this work we have performed dust analysis on the performance of PV panel and designed an effective method to clean the panel and make it dust free. Solar dust cleaner and cooler system provides a solution for both dusts cleaning and keeping the panels at less temperature.
Study on Impacts of Dust Accumulation and Rainfall on PV Power Reduction in East China

Abstract:The photovoltaic (PV) power plants' power generation is affected obviously by the cleanliness of the photovoltaic modules. The dust is the primary source causing the pollution. Natural dust deposition is affected by human activities and meteorological factors such as temperature, humidity, wind speed and PM10 concentration in the region where PV modules are installed. The research efforts so far have been focused on predicting PV power outputs, however, in the real operations the PV outputs can significantly deviate from the prediction due to the dust pollution which, unfortunately, has not been fully investigated. This paper, to the authors' best knowledge, is the first research to analyze the dust composition and evaluate its impacts on the PV power outputs with the real field test data in East China Collected through a series of experiments completed in the lab of the Institute of Distributed Generation and Microgrid, Zhejiang University of Technology, in East China. A PV output forecasting model was set up first based on the irradiance and the component's temperature. Then a complete meteorological and electrical data online monitoring system was developed for data acquisition. The morphology of the dust particles on the investigated photovoltaic modules was observed by a scanning electron microscope, and the composition of the dust particles was measured by X-ray fluorescence. The research found that the dust accumulated on the surface of photovoltaic modules tend to form clusters under the influence of rainfall which is one major cause on fast dropping PV outputs. The analysis shows the dust deposit mainly comprises of SiO2 and CaCO3. Further analysis indicates in East China, the average dust density on PV modules is 0.644 g/m(2) in a week and consequently the dust reduces the PV output power by 7.4% one week. The research is of significance not only in terms of giving the real-data based analysis on dust properties deposited on PV panels, but also on revealing the relationship between power output attenuation and dust deposition, which helps improve the PV power output prediction accuracy and develop efficient cleaning strategies for photovoltaic modules. Analysis of dust deposition law at the micro level and its impact on the annual performance of photovoltaic modules

Abstract:Solar photovoltaic (PV) power generation is a promising clean energy technology, but dust affects its performance. This study, conducted in nine Chinese cities with varying climates and geographies, analyzed the physicochemical properties of dust and its deposition patterns at different inclination angles using microanalysis. Inclination angles were classified into three categories, and a dust density prediction (DDP) model was developed for each. The study also quantified the effect of different dust densities on PV module temperature in a controlled environment and created a PV module output power prediction (POPP) model to assess dust accumulation impacts on PV efficiency. It was found that dust insulation could increase PV module output power by 1.64 %–1.79 % at dust densities of 5–10 g/m 2 and radiation levels of 400–800 W/m 2 . Combining the DDP and POPP models, a PV efficiency loss rate model was proposed to evaluate annual average PV efficiency and power generation losses at different tilting angles. Results showed an annual average PV efficiency loss of over 7 % at a 15° inclination angle and about 4.5 % at a 90° inclination angle. This study provides a framework for evaluating PV module mounting angles and cleaning intervals, optimizing solar energy systems for improved efficiency and returns.

Abstract:Photovoltaic (PV) module soiling, i.e., the accumulation of dust on PV module surfaces, poses several challenges to PV system performance. Among these challenges, the nonuniform deposition of soiling across the module surface has received scarce attention. Soiling is directly associated with an overall performance loss, but can also potentially give rise to localised hotspots that can lead to long-term PV module failure. Therefore, addressing the issues arising from this nonuniformity is not only important for optimising energy production, but also for enhancing system reliability, and ensuring the long-term operation of relevant power generation systems. In this study, the impact of nonuniform soiling on PV performance is investigated experimentally by examining soil deposition on the upper surfaces of low-iron glass samples. Samples positioned at four different tilt angles were collected on a monthly basis over a one-year study period. Since the horizontal samples were found to represent the worst-case conditions, the most soiled sample at horizontal tilt was divided into four zones, each housing a single monocrystalline solar cell and examined further. The findings reveal that the soiled sample experiences an average transmittance deterioration of 13% relative to a clean sample, and a maximum (relative) spatial variation of 4% between the four zones. These optical losses affect the amount of sunlight received by the cells, resulting in a power deterioration of ∼6–7% per 5% drop in transmittance. The soiled sample experienced an average temperature rise of 2 °C, and an average power output (and efficiency) reduction of 30% relative to the clean sample, and a maximum (relative) spatial variation of 7% between the zones. The 30% average power loss measured in this nonuniform soiling case is more than double that which would be expected theoretically for a transmittance loss of 13% but from uniform soiling, so these results highlight the importance of addressing PV soiling for optimal PV performance, and of accounting for spatial soiling nonuniformity.

Abstract:This study has three objectives. The first one is the measurement and comparison of the soiling impact on three PV technologies: (i) Cadmium telluride (CdTe) (ii) monocrystalline (mono-Si) and (iii) multi-crystalline (m-Si) under a hot desert climate. The second one, is the evaluation of the dust homogeneity distribution on the panels surfaces and how it affects the electrical parameters (I sc and P max ). As for the third one, we developed several cleaning scenarios to select the optimal one -for each technology and from techno-economical aspects-if installed in desert location. Results show that the Monocrystalline (Mono-Si) is the most affected technology with a daily soiling ratio (SR) reaching 28%, while CdTe is the less affected one with a daily SR of 23.6%. Regarding the soiling distribution, we found that both I sc and P max , can be used for the SR assessment in our field of study as they show a good agreement with the power loss (R 2 above 98%). Finally, based on the result, a bi-weekly cleaning scenario during the dry period of the year, is the optimal schedule for our site where the energy loss -in comparison to the daily cleaning scenario-is around 3.53%, 3.41%, and 2.27% for the Mono-Si, m-Si and CdTe, respectively. The results of this study may be of high importance for operators and operation and maintenance (O&M) crews working on the PV plants -with similar climate conditions as our field of study-to adjust their cleaning schedules for a better profitability of the power plant and a low water consumption.

Abstract:Dust deposition on the surface of solar systems is one of the main parameters that significantly affects the performance of such systems. In this study, the effect of dust deposition density on the performance of photovoltaic modules (PV) and photovoltaic-thermal systems (PVT) is numerically investigated. Accordingly, all layers of a monocrystalline silicon PV module for both systems are simulated. Moreover, the effect of various system parameters on the performance of both clean and dusty PV module and PVT system are studied. The studied parameters included: solar radiation intensity, ambient temperature, coolant inlet temperature, and coolant inlet velocity. The obtained results indicate that by increasing the dust deposition density on the surface of the PV module from 0 g/m2 to 8 g/m2, its electrical efficiency reduces by 26.36%. In addition, by increasing the dust deposition density on the surface of the PVT system from 0 g/m2 to 8 g/m2, its electrical and thermal efficiencies reduce by 26.42% and 16.11%, respectively. Moreover, the simulation results show that the effect of considered parameters on the clean solar system is more significant than the dusty system. Furthermore, two correlations for electrical and thermal output reduction as a function of dust deposition density are proposed.

Abstract:Solar Photovoltaic systems are greatly influenced by meteorological conditions of the surrounding area, dust is the most influencing one. Dust deposition on the surface of photovoltaic (PV) panel hinder the penetration of solar radiation to PV cells and eventually reduce the power production of PV system. To overcome dust-based power losses, frequent cleaning is required depending on geographical location, PV integration scheme and size of the PV power plant. In this manuscript, consequences of dust deposition on photovoltaic systems such as drop in radiation and output power operating are studied, and the optimal time interval for cleaning is determined. Airborne dust particles were collected for a month for morphological and meteorological characterization. The average mass concentrations of the sample are 187.63 μgm-3, showcasing an irregular distribution of dust particles having unlike shapes and sizes. In this study, the influence of dust deposition is quantified using temperature and insolation for clean and dirty PV panels. The overall performance of the PV system is studied based on a comparison of quantified and recorded data. Lastly, different cleaning methodologies are studied to procure the best ones. Power losses were brought down to 7% when PV panels were cleaned fortnightly, which is the most feasible interval in terms of balance between cleaning cost and energy wasted due to soiling.

Abstract:The particle deposition on the surface of solar photovoltaic panels deteriorates its performance as it obstructs the solar radiation reaching the solar cells. In addition to that, it may cause overheating of the panels, which further decreases the performance of the system. The dust deposition on the surfaces is a complex phenomenon which depends on a large number of different environmental and technical factors, such as location, weather parameters, pollution, tilt angle and surface roughness. Hence, it becomes crucial to investigate the key parameters which influence dust accumulation and their interrelations. In this study, the phenomenon of dust deposition was studied experimentally in the urban area at one of the most polluted cities of Europe, i.e. Kraków, Poland. Solar photovoltaic panels tilted at angles 15° and 35° were exposed to atmospheric conditions for the period of eighteen months from 6 May 2017 until 30 November 2018. Dust samples were collected from the panels for the exposure period which ranged from one day up to 11 days. It was observed that lower tilt angles promote dust accumulation on the surface and that in the absence of wind and rain, deposition of particles on the surface of panels follows the pattern of concentration of PM2.5 and PM10 in the atmosphere. Wind and rainfall usually promote the removal of dust particles from the surface. However, rainfall not always aids the cleaning of panels, and it was observed that low-intensity rain results in a very low rate of PMs in the air and in much higher than typical dust deposition on the panel surface. It also accelerates the cementing of already deposited dust. It was only rainfall whose intensity was at least 38 mm/h that was sufficient to remove dust particles from the panels.

Abstract:Globally installed solar photovoltaics (PV) capacity has crossed three hundred gigawatts and is increasing each year. As the share of solar PV in the energy mix of a country increases, forecasting PV power available will be crucial. To forecast the instantaneous and long-term PV power output, understanding the factors influencing them is necessary. In this view, this work elaborates on the factors that impact the PV system through tabulation and graphical explanation. Further, a discussion of the articles related to the dust-induced change in performance is made. To understand the impact of dust on solar PV systems in depth, advanced instrumentation and methodologies have been used in the past few years. One of the methods is the measurement of spectral transmittance/reflectance/absorptance of the dust layer on the PV panel. This has led to the question whether a thin layer of some specific dust can be beneficial by absorbing infrared (IR) heat and hence allowing the PV cells to operate at a lower temperature. Many controlled experiments in the laboratory have been made using the artificial dust and sun simulators; and such studies aid in the development of numerical models. Research in modeling, mathematical analysis (from first principles) of dust deposition, and calculation of its impact on panels have been given importance in recent years. Outdoor experiments are relatively more common than other modes of research in this field. Studies involving the interaction of deposited dust with spectral radiation, improving the correlation between artificial and natural dust deposition, the interplay between dust and atmospheric parameters are to be encouraged.

Abstract:The solar heat gain is a significant factor to be considered while designing sustainable Heating Ventilation and Air-Conditioning system for the working rooms in the future. By installing photovoltaics on rooftop, building can be insulated from heat and the cooling load requirement for the rooms can be reduced significantly. Advantages of building applied photovoltaic systems for building insulation are justified by means of measurements and modeling. Thermal and air quality measurements outside and inside rooms of similar area, under different types of PV arrays are observed and the phenomenon of solar heat gain is studied. The experiment was conducted in Perundurai, Tamil Nadu, India, in the months of February and March of 2019. Thermal infrared imaging data for room ceilings showed a reduction of up to 2.5°C under PV array compared to those with open roof. Computer simulations indicated significant differences in temperature, between ceilings covered by PV array and ceilings with open rooftop. The relative humidity inside the rooms covered by PV arrays is 10% higher as compared to rooms with open rooftop. Due to the installed 100 kW e solar photovoltaic plant, emission of nearly 100 kg CO 2 is reduced per day. There is a reduction in 28.5% CO 2 inside the room with elevated PV panels at the roof top compared to room without PV panels.
