Abstract:A nitrogen-carbon framework with the thickness of several molecules was fabricated through a straightforward nitrogen-doping strategy, in which specially designed surface-oxygen-containing groups (SOGs) first introduced onto the porous carbon support were used to guide the generation of a surface-nitrogen-containing structure through condensation reactions between SOGs and the amidogen group of organic amines under hydrothermal conditions. The results indicate that different kinds of SOGs generate different types and abundances of N species. The CO-releasing groups are apt to form a high proportion of amino groups, whereas the CO2-releasing groups, especially carboxyl and lactones, are mainly transformed into pyrrolic-type nitrogen. In the framework with dominant pyrrolic-type nitrogen, an electron-rich Pd activated site composed of Pd, pyrrolic-type N and C is built, in which electron transfer occurs from N to C and Pd atoms. This activated site contributes to the formation of electron-rich activated hydrogen and desorption of p-chloroaniline, which work together to achieve the superior selectivity about 99.90 % of p-chloroaniline and the excellent reusable performance. This strategy not only provides low-cost, nitrogen-doped carbon materials, but also develops a new method for the fabrication of different kinds of nitrogen species structures.
Crafting Pyrolysis-Free M–N–C Catalysts

Abstract:M–N–C catalysts, with their transition metal atoms coordinated to nitrogen/carbon atoms as active sites, are gaining attention for their versatile heterogeneous electrocatalysis. Fabrication of these catalysts can be achieved through either bottom-up chemical synthesis or top-down pyrolysis procedures, where the former offers a well-defined structure and precise synthesis feasibility. This Perspective provides an overview of the history of the technical route dispute between pyrolysis and pyrolysis-free M–N–C catalysts, along with their respective advantages and disadvantages. Additionally, we emphasize the advantages of pyrolysis-free M–N–C catalysts, exemplified by several studies focused on precisely modulating the structure to regulate the activity, as well as the efforts of effectively integrating the active sites. Finally, we discuss the challenges and opportunities of pyrolysis-free M–N–C catalysts, with the aim of maximizing their inherent strengths of precise structure and promoting their industrial applications.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts have received widespread attention for their fascinating performance in terms of metal atom efficiency as well as their special catalysis mechanisms compared to conventional catalysts. Here, we prepared a high-performance catalyst of single-Cu-atom-decorated boron nitride nanofibers (BNNF-Cu) via a facile calcination method. The as-prepared catalyst shows high catalytic activity and good stability for converting different nitro compounds into their corresponding amines both with and without photoexcitation. By combined studies of synchrotron radiation analysis, high-resolution high-angle annular dark-field transmission electron microscopy studies, and DFT calculations, dispersion and coordination of Cu atoms as well as their catalytic mechanisms are explored. The BNNF-Cu catalyst is found to have a record high turnover frequency compared to previously reported non-precious-metal-based catalysts. While the performance of the BNNF-Cu catalyst is only of the middle range level among the state-of-the-art precious-metal-based catalysts, due to the much lower cost of the BNNF-Cu catalyst, its cost efficiency is the highest among these catalysts. This work provides a choice of support material that can promote the development of single-atom catalysts.

Abstract:Abstract Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have been applied in many fields due to their superior catalytic performance. Because of the unique properties of the single-atom-site, using the single atoms as catalysts to synthesize SACs is promising. In this work, we have successfully achieved Co 1 SAC using Pt 1 atoms as catalysts. More importantly, this synthesis strategy can be extended to achieve Fe and Ni SACs as well. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) results demonstrate that the achieved Fe, Co, and Ni SACs are in a M 1 -pyrrolic N 4 (M= Fe, Co, and Ni) structure. Density functional theory (DFT) studies show that the Co(Cp) 2 dissociation is enhanced by Pt 1 atoms, thus leading to the formation of Co 1 atoms instead of nanoparticles. These SACs are also evaluated under hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and the nature of active sites under HER are unveiled by the operando XAS studies. These new findings extend the application fields of SACs to catalytic fabrication methodology, which is promising for the rational design of advanced SACs.

Abstract:Carbon-catalyzed oxidation represents a promising strategy for nitrogen oxide emission control. Here, we report a new strategy to simultaneously optimize the pore topology and doping environment of activated coke (AC) catalyst through one-step catalytic activation process with nitrogen resource in-situ participation. Dynamic experiments of nitric oxide catalytic oxidation using the prepared activated cokes with controllable pore configurations and doping environment firstly demonstrate that hierarchical pore configuration and nitrogen functional groups can synergistically improve catalytic oxidation activity. Especially, nitrogen-doped hierarchical porous AC catalyst exhibits the highest conversion efficiency (above 70%). Based on density functional theory calculations in combination with control experiments using pyridinic nitrogen and quaternary nitrogen-dominant catalysts, a new activity descriptor of electrophilic Fukui function is proposed and quaternary nitrogen is thereby identified to be the optimal nitrogen doping configuration towards nitric oxide catalytic oxidation. This work provides new insights into the synergistic role of pore topology and nitrogen doping in nitric oxide low-temperature oxidation, giving guidance for designing high-performance carbocatalyst.

Abstract:Co-N-C catalysts are promising candidates for substituting platinum in electrocatalysis and organic transformations. The heterogeneity of the Co species resulting from high-temperature pyrolysis, however, encumbers the structural identification of active sites. Herein, we report a self-supporting Co-N-C catalyst wherein cobalt is dispersed exclusively as single atoms. By using sub-Ångström-resolution HAADF-STEM in combination with XAFS and DFT calculation, the exact structure of the Co-N-C is identified to be CoN4C8-1-2O2, where the Co center atom is coordinated with four pyridinic N atoms in the graphitic layer, while two oxygen molecules are weakly adsorbed on Co atoms in perpendicular to the Co-N4 plane. This single-atom dispersed Co-N-C catalyst presents excellent performance for the chemoselective hydrogenation of nitroarenes to produce azo compounds under mild reaction conditions.
Atomically Dispersed Cu Anchored on Nitrogen and Boron Codoped Carbon Nanosheets for Enhancing Catalytic Performance

Abstract:Development of high-performance heterogeneous catalytic materials is important for the rapid upgrade of chemicals, which remains a challenge. Here, the benzene oxidation reaction was used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the atomic interface strategy to improve catalytic performance. The developed B,N-cocoordinated Cu single atoms anchored on carbon nanosheets (Cu1/B-N) with the Cu-N2B1 atomic interface was prepared by the pyrolysis of a precoordinated Cu precursor. Benefiting from the unique atomic Cu-N2B1 interfacial structure, the designed Cu1/B-N exhibited considerable activity in the oxidation of benzene, which was much higher than Cu1/N-C, Cu NPs/N-C, and N-C catalysts. A theoretical study showed that the enhanced catalytic performance resulted from the optimized adsorption of intermediates, which originated from the manipulation of the electronic structure of Cu single atoms induced by B atom coordination in the Cu-N2B1 atomic interface. This study provides an innovative approach for the rational design of high-performance heterogeneous catalytic materials at the atomic level.

Abstract:In pursuing cheap and effective oxygen reduction catalysts, the Fe/N/C system emerges as a promising candidate. Nevertheless, the structural transformations of starting materials into Fe- and N-doped carbon catalysts remains poorly characterized under pyrolytic conditions. Here, we explore the evolution of Fe species and track the formation of Fe-N4 site development by employing diverse in-situ diagnostic techniques. In-situ heating microscopy reveals the initial formation of FeOx nanoparticles and subsequent internal migration within the carbon matrix, which stops once FeOx is fully reduced. The migration and decomposition of nanoparticles then leads to carbon layer reconstruction. Experimental and theoretical analysis reveals size-dependent behavior of FeOx where nanoparticles below 7 nm readily release Fe atoms to form Fe-N4 while nanoparticles with sizes >10 nm tend to coalesce and impede Fe-N4 site formation. The work visualizes the pyrolysis process of Fe/N/C materials, providing theoretical guidance for the rational design of catalysts.
Pyridinic-N Regulated Electron Injection to Modulate *OH Adsorption at Fe-N-C Sites for an Efficient Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Abstract:To enhance the efficiency of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts, precise control over the adsorption/desorption energy barriers of oxygen intermediates at atomically dispersed Fe-N-C sites is essential yet challenging. Addressing this, we employed a pyrolysis approach using a nitrogen-containing polymer to fabricate Fe single-atom (SA) catalysts embedded in a pyridinic-N enriched carbon matrix. This synthesis strategy yielded Fe SAs that demonstrated a superior electrochemical ORR performance, evidenced by an impressive half-wave potential of 0.941 V and a high limiting current density of 5.72 mA/cm2. Moreover, when applied in homemade Zn-air batteries, this premier catalyst exhibited exceptional specific capacity (720 mAh/gZn), peak power density (253 mW/cm2), and notable long-term stability. Theoretical insights revealed that the increased pyridinic-N content in the catalyst facilitated efficient electron transfer from N atoms to the Fe active sites, thus fine-tuning the d-band center and effectively controlling the adsorption energy barrier of *OH species. These mechanisms synergistically improve the ORR performance. Crucially, this fabrication method shows promise for adaptation to other transition metal-based SAs, including Co, Ni, and Cu, potentially establishing a versatile synthesis route for developing atomically dispersed catalyst systems in future applications.
One-step synthesis of N, P co-doped porous carbon electrocatalyst for highly efficient nitrogen fixation

Abstract:Heteroatom-doped porous carbon has attracted many researchers’ interests owing to their hierarchical porous and more active sites for nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR). However, the development of simple synthesis strategies to fabricate efficient catalyst is still remaining a challenge. In this work, a series of N, P co-doped porous carbon were prepared by one-step pyrolysis of zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) and triphenylphosphine (TPP) under nitrogen atmosphere. The obtained catalyst by calcinating ZIF-8 and TPP with the mass ratio of 1: 5 for three hours was named as PN-C-ZIF-8, which exhibited a high yield rate of ammonia (43.39 µg·h−1·mg−1cat.) and Faraday efficiency (16.67%) in 0.05 M H2SO4 at −0.3 V. More importantly, the PN-C-ZIF-8 catalyst had superior selectivity that no hydrazine by-products were detected and long-term durability for 72 h. This study provides an idea for the convenient design and preparation of heteroatom doped carbon materials.

The Cu single-atom catalyst exhibited an excellent CO2-to-CH4 electroreduction performance, including a Faradaic efficiency of 68.2%, a high partial current density of 493.1 mA cm–2, and a good electrochemical stability. This work suggests a potential means of the mass production of Cu single-atom catalysts, with understanding of the mechanism of the CO2 electroreduction to CH4.

Abstract:Fe/N/C single-atom catalysts containing Fe-N x sites prepared by pyrolysis are promising cathode materials for fuel cells and metal-air batteries due to their high oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activities. We have developed iron complexes containing N2- or N3-chelating coordination structures with preorganized aromatic rings in a 1,12-diazatriphenylene framework tethering bromo substituents as precursors to precisely construct Fe-N 4 sites in an Fe/N/C catalyst. One-step pyrolysis of the iron complex with carbon black forms atomically dispersed Fe-N 4 sites without iron aggregates. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and electrochemical measurements revealed that the iron complex with N3-coordination is more effectively converted to Fe-N 4 sites catalyzing ORR with a TOF value of 0.21 e∙site -1 ∙s -1 at 0.8 V vs RHE. This indicates that the formation of Fe-N 4 sites is controlled by precise tuning of the chemical structure of the iron complex precursor.

Photocatalytic Free Radical-Controlled Synthesis of High-Performance Single-Atom Catalysts.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have emerged as crucial players in catalysis research, prompting extensive investigation and application. The precise control of metal atom nucleation and growth has garnered significant attention. In this study, we present a straightforward approach for preparing SACs utilizing a photocatalytic radical control strategy. Notably, we demonstrate for the first time that radicals generated during the photochemical process effectively hinder the aggregation of individual atoms. By leveraging the cooperative anchoring of nitrogen atoms and crystal lattice oxygen on the support, we successfully stabilize the single atom. Our Pd1/TiO2 catalysts exhibit remarkable catalytic activity and stability in the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction, which was 43 times higher than Pd/C. Furthermore, we successfully depose Pd atoms onto various substrates, including TiO2, CeO2, and WO3. The photocatalytic radical control strategy can be extended to other single-atom catalysts, such as Ir, Pt, Rh, and Ru, underscoring its broad applicability.

Abstract:Constructing of single atom catalysts that can stably exist in various energy conversion and storage devices is still in its infancy. Herein, a geometrically optimized three-dimensional hierarchically architectural single atomic Fe-N-C catalyst with fast mass transport and electron transfer is rationally developed by post-molecule pyrolysis assisted with silicon template and reconstructs by ammonia treating. The ammonia-assisted secondary pyrolysis not only compensates for the volatilization of nitrogen species contained in organic precursors but also optimizes the surface structure of Fe-N-C catalyst, thus increasing the content of pyridinic nitrogen and boosting the density of active sites (Fe-Nx) in Fe-N-C samples. In addition, the pyridinic nitrogen adjusts the electronic distribution in Fe 3d active center and promotes the catalytic performances. Therefore, this hollow spherical atomically dispersed Fe-N-C catalyst delivers outstanding oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity in pH-universal electrolyte and surpasses the most reported values.

Abstract:Transition metal-nitrogen-carbon materials (M-N-C catalysts) are promising electrocatalysts in polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) and electrolyzer applications. High temperature treatment in inert atmosphere (pyrolysis) is the essential, most common method for the synthesis of M-N-C catalysts and critical to achieve high electrocatalytic activity and electronic conductivity. To this day, despite many uses and successful implementations in materials manufacturing, pyrolysis has been an entirely empirical technology, with process control and optimization relying exclusively on "Edisonian" approach. The knowledge gap in the mechanism about how the precursor is being transformed into catalysts hinders further development of the M-N-C catalysts regardless of the precursor class and processing protocols. Herein, we probed the morphological evolution and chemical transformation of a nitrogen-containing charge transfer organic salt, mixed with transition metal (iron) salt and amorphous silica powder (precursor) during the pyrolysis process via a combination of in situ synchrotron and laboratory-based diagnostic techniques. The pyrolysis process is found to be divided into three stages. During a controlled temperature ramp, the selected organic N-C precursor (nicarbazin) began melting and decomposing just below 400 °C, forming a certain number of micrometer-scale pores and pathways. With increase in temperature from 400 °C to 900 °C, amorphous carbon domains started forming, and reduced (metallic) iron nanoclusters appeared, being dispersed uniformly throughout the carbonaceous matrix. When temperature advanced above 900 °C, graphitization of carbon commenced, associated with appearance and evolution of atomically dispersed metal-nitrogen moieties in the carbonaceous matrix. As the graphitization advanced further, a secondary process of agglomeration of metal nanoparticles occurred. Multi-analytical technique observations conducted here provide a base for rational design and optimization of M-N-C electrocatalysts via pyrolysis.

Turning the coordination environment of atomic Fe-N 4 center by peripheral nitrogen species for boosted catalytic performance

Abstract:Atomically dispersed metal-nitrogen-carbon (M-N-C) catalysts show great potential for heterogeneous catalysis. However, recognizing and engineering the microenvironment of M-N x sites to achieve satisfactory catalytic performance remains challenging. Herein, we propose a facile g-C 3 N 4 -assisted template strategy to anchor atomic Fe-N 4 sites on highly nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets. Through regulating the ratio and type of peripheral nitrogen species by carbonization temperature, the optimal Fe-N-C-800 catalyst showed significantly boosted catalytic activities (overall turnover frequency of 13.43 min −1 and activation energy of 19.44 kJ mol −1 ) for nitroarene reduction with extremely low reductant dosage, exceeding most reported metal catalysts. Experimental and theoretical results reveal appropriate graphitic- and pyrrolic-N dopants surrounding the Fe-N 4 center can tailor the local electronic structure and contribute to obvious upshift of the d-band center, which dramatically promotes the adsorption and conversion of reactant substrates, eventually delivering the unprecedented catalytic performance. This work provides a guide for rational coordination environment regulation of single-atom catalysts for efficient chemical transformations.

Abstract:Constructing catalysts that simultaneously containing single atom/metal nanocluster active sites is a promising strategy to enhance the original catalytic behavior and accelerate the catalysis involving multi-electron reactions or multi-intermediates. Herein, the pyrolysis-free synthetic method is developed to integrate single atoms and nanoclusters towards highly satisfactory catalytic performances for both acidic and alkaline hydrogen electrocatalysis. The controllable pyrolysis-free strategy allows the precise modulation of the active centers, realizing the optimization of the adsorption energy and the regulation of the synergistic active components. Specially, the as-prepared catalysts with hybrid single-atom/nanocluster sites exhibited superior catalytic activities for hydrogen evolution in both acidic and alkaline media with low over-potentials at -10 mA cm-2 of 25 mV and 8.6 mV, respectively, combining with outstanding durability towards high current density and methanol poisoning. This work developed a universal synthetic strategy for the single atom/nanocluster synergy systems and further demonstrated the superiority of heterogeneous components.

Single Cobalt Atoms with Precise N‐Coordination As Superior Oxygen Reduction Reaction Catalysts

Abstract:AbstractA new strategy for achieving stable Co single atoms (SAs) on nitrogen‐doped porous carbon with high metal loading over 4 wt % is reported. The strategy is based on a pyrolysis process of predesigned bimetallic Zn/Co metal–organic frameworks, during which Co can be reduced by carbonization of the organic linker and Zn is selectively evaporated away at high temperatures above 800 °C. The spherical aberration correction electron microscopy and extended X‐ray absorption fine structure measurements both confirm the atomic dispersion of Co atoms stabilized by as‐generated N‐doped porous carbon. Surprisingly, the obtained Co‐Nx single sites exhibit superior ORR performance with a half‐wave potential (0.881 V) that is more positive than commercial Pt/C (0.811 V) and most reported non‐precious metal catalysts. Durability tests revealed that the Co single atoms exhibit outstanding chemical stability during electrocatalysis and thermal stability that resists sintering at 900 °C. Our findings open up a new routine for general and practical synthesis of a variety of materials bearing single atoms, which could facilitate new discoveries at the atomic scale in condensed materials.
