Abstract:A ternary nanocomposite consisting of N-doped graphene (NGR)/TiO₂/activated carbon (NGRT@AC) was prepared, and the components' synergetic effect on dye degradation was investigated after deposition on the surface of a polysulfone membrane (PSF). As far as we know, this ternary composite catalyst has never previously been used to degrade dyes nor been used as a functional layer for separation membranes. The surface morphology and structure of the as-prepared membranes were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The NGRT@AC-modified PSF membrane (NGRT@AC-PSF) presents excellent photodegradation efficiency to methyl orange (MO) under both UV (95.2%) and sunlight (78.1%) irradiation, much higher than those values of PSF, TiO₂- modified PSF (TiO₂-PSF), and N-doped graphene/TiO2 (NGRT)-modified PSF membranes (NGRT-PSF) under the same conditions. The high flux recovery ratio (95.5%) demonstrates that the NGRT@AC-PSF membrane shows improved antifouling performance. The photocatalytic results prove that surface deposition method (95.2%) was better than the blending method (31.1%) for forming high-performance membranes. Therefore, the NGRT@AC-PSF membrane has the potential for broad applications in dye degradation to treat waste water from textile industries.

Abstract:Framework modification of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) with organic molecules is recognized as an effective strategy to enhance its photocatalytic performance by improving the charge separation in g-C3N4. In this work, pyromellitic diimide (PD) with strong electron-withdrawing ability and conjugated structure was linked to g-C3N4 skeleton by simple solution blending to prepare a composite of g-C3N4 @PD. It is found that the resultant composite exhibited much higher photocatalytic activity than pristine g-C3N4 in the photodegradation of an anionic dye of sulforhodamine B (SRB). Specifically, the composite with PD of 1% in weight ratio showed a degradation rate constant 3.8 times and 5.1 times that of g-C3N4 under the illumination of visible light and ultra violet light, respectively. Moreover, g-C3N4 @PD revealed highly selective photodegradation in favor of a cationic dye of malachite green in its mixture with the anionic dye of SRB, which is attributed to preferential adsorption of the cationic dye onto the negatively charged photocatalyst. In addition, the composite maintained a high photodegradation efficiency of 98.2% at the end of five cycles of the photodegradation of SRB, suggesting good photocatalytic stability. It is proposed that enhanced photocatalytic activity of the composite is related to the electron-withdrawing effect of PD, which facilitates the separation of photo-induced electrons from the g-C3N4 skeleton to the boundary PD to inhibit the recombination of the photogenerated electron/hole pairs in g-C3N4 skeleton. The facilely prepared g-C3N4 @PD is a promising photocatalyst in environmental remediation.

Abstract:Currently, the energy crisis and environmental pollution are two critical challenges confronted by humans. The development of smart strategies to address the above-mentioned issues simultaneously is significant. As the main accomplices for water pollution, several kinds of organic dyes with intrinsic redox functional groups such as phenothiazines derivatives, anthraquinone, and indigoid dyes are potential candidates for the replacement of the conventional pseudocapacitive materials. In this work, three typical organic dyes can be efficiently removed by a facile adsorption procedure using reduced graphene oxide coated cellulose fiber (rGO@CF) paper. Flexible supercapacitors based on dye/rGO@CF electrodes exhibit excellent electrochemical performances that are superior to or comparable with those of conventional pseudocapacitive materials based devices, presenting a new type of promising electrode materials. Moreover, benefiting from the high flexibility and considerable mechanical strength of the graphene composite paper, the operating potential and capacitance of the devices can be easily adjusted by tailoring the hybrid electrodes into different specific shapes followed by rational integrating. The smart design of these dye/rGO@CF paper based electrodes shows that energy storage and environmental remediation can be achieved simultaneously.

Abstract:A cost-efficient and environmentally benign strategy for large-scale production of metal oxide/metal-decorated 3D porous graphene directly converted from waste papers with a cobalt(II) complex was successfully developed. The resulting Co3O4/Co immobilized in porous graphene served as a spacer to prevent restacking of graphene and also provided more accessible active sites. As a demonstration, the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) was chosen to show the catalytic activity of the high-added-value Co3O4/Co@graphene composite. Due to the synergistic catalytic effects between Co3O4 and graphene combined with a hierarchical porous structure, the synthesized 3D functional porous graphene can function as an efficient ORR catalyst with comparable performance to that of a Pt/C catalyst, which shows its potential application in fuel cells.

Abstract:Graphene oxide has been widely used in the oxidative degradation of environmental pollutants. However, its catalytic role can be questioned as graphene oxide with oxygen-containing functional groups may also act as reactant in oxidative reactions. Herein, hydrogel composites loaded with multilayered graphene platelets showed excellent catalytic performance for the reduction of a wastewater organic pollutant (methylene blue) under NaBH4, which proved the catalytic role of multilayered graphene platelets. The liquid-based direct exfoliation method was used to prepare two-dimensional materials, which is compatible with other liquid phase methods to prepare nanomaterials. Hydrogel composites composed of multilayered graphene platelets, silver nanoparticles, and polyacrylic acid hydrogels were synthesized in water solution under irradiation with ultraviolet light, demonstrating the advantages of synthesizing nanocomposites using the liquid-based direct exfoliation method.

Abstract:Design and development of iron porphyrin-based artificial enzymes system have been attracting a lot of attention. Herein, without any toxic reductant and harsh processing, we present a facile one-pot method tofabricatebifunctionalcatalyticnanocompositesconsistingofgrapheneandheminbyusingvitamin C as a mild reduction reagent. The presence of graphene helps the formation of a high degree of highly active and stable hemin on the graphene surface in a monomeric form through their π-π stacking interaction. As a result, such nanocomposites possess a superior adsorption capacity and intrinsic peroxidase-like catalytic activity. Moreover, by the combination of their dye adsorption ability, RGO-hemin nanocomposites can serve as a suitable candidate for efficient capture and removal of dyes via a synergistic effect. Synergistic effect of GN-Ag NPs enhancing the efficient catalytic degradation of MB and CR by PDA@MMT composite hydrogel

Abstract:A novel composite hydrogel prepared from polyacrylamide (PAM), polydopamine-modified montmorillonite (PDA@MMT), graphene and hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC), loaded with Ag NPs, was prepared for the catalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) and Congo red (CR) using in situ reduction. HPC significantly enhanced the dispersion of PDA@MMT within the hydrogel, endowing the hydrogel with excellent mechanical properties, with stress and strain of 1773 kPa and 4005 %, and elastic modulus and toughness of 43.4 kPa and 29.54 MJ/m3, respectively. The introduction of graphene (GN) increased the rate of electron transfer during the catalytic process and significantly improved the catalytic efficiency, with catalytic rate constants of 1.360 and 0.803 min-1 for MB and CR at 20 °C, respectively. The hydrogels were endowed with excellent antimicrobial properties due to the introduction of Ag NPs. In the future, this hydrogel is expected to play an important role in environmental pollution control.
Synthesis of 3D Iron and Carbon-Based Composite As a Bifunctional Sorbent and Catalyst for Remediation of Organic Pollutants

Abstract:We prepared a 3D monolith by integrating graphite nanosheet encapsulated iron nanoparticles (Fe@GNS) into graphite felt (GF) supports. The structural properties of the resulting Fe@GNS/GF monolith are characterized by x-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and N-2 adsorption-desorption isotherms. The Fe@GNS/GF monoliths are utilized as a bifunctional sorbent and catalyst for water remediation. Using Congo red and methyl violet 2B as model pollutants, the sorption and catalytic performance of the Fe@GNS/GF composite are examined. The Fe@GNS/GF monolith possesses maximum sorption capacities of 177 and 142 mgg(-1) for the sorption of CR and MV-2B, respectively. It also exhibits rate constants of 0.0563 and 0.0464 min(-1) for the catalytic degradation of CR and MV-2B, respectively. As a proof of concept, the Fe@GNS/GF is successfully utilized to decontaminate simulated organic waste water via a combination of sorption and catalytic degradation processes.

Abstract:The sewage discharge of industrial wastewater seriously pollutes the water source and rivers, which is very harmful to the health of humans and wildlife. Among those methods for treating wastewater, photocatalysis is a sustainable and environmental-friendly technique for removing the organic pollutants with no secondary pollution. As a popular photocatalyst, graphene/metal oxide nanocomposites have been widely reported in the photocatalysis field. In this review, the recent progress of graphene/metal oxide composites including binary and ternary composites is summarized in detail. The synthesis, microstructure design, and application performance of graphene/TiO2, graphene/ZnO, graphene/SnO2, graphene/WO3, graphene/Fe2O3, and graphene/Cu2O composites are introduced firstly. Then, the synthesis, the selection of components, and the performance of various ternary composites are summarized specifically, including graphene/TiO2-, graphene/ZnO-, graphene/SnO2-, graphene/Cu2O-, graphene/FexOy-, and graphene/Bi-containing ternary composites. At last, the possible research directions of graphene/metal oxide nanocomposites are put forward. The main purpose is to provide a theoretical guidance for designing high-performance graphene/metal oxide photocatalysts for wastewater treatment.

Abstract:The carcinogenicity and reproductive ability of rhodamine B (RhB) towards humans and animals have been proved. Current techniques to treat RhB are non-destructive, high cost and low efficient. Therefore, it has practical significance to establish a reasonable method for effective degradation of RhB. Here, the silica gel (SG)/reduced graphene oxide (RGO)/Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) composite as the catalyst for degradation of RhB was facilely prepared. Effect of various parameters on the degradation efficiency of the composite was discussed in detail. Interestingly, the degradation efficiency of RhB can be dramatically improved in the presence of the SG/RGO/Ag composite. Moreover, the degradation efficiency was sensitive to the parameters such as the content of Ag in the composite, NaBH4 dosage, pH value of the solution, the amount of the composite, initial concentration of RhB, temperature and inorganic salts. Under optimal conditions, the degradation efficiency for RhB could reach 100% within 50 s even the content of Ag was only 0.78%, instead of the traditional catalyst with high loading of Ag and low catalytic efficiency. Also, the composite was of low cost, highly stable performance and facile recovery, which is a potential candidate for the catalytic degradation of organic dyes in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Graphene possesses many superior properties which make it an ideal matrix to support semiconductors. Recently, graphene/semiconductor composites have been applied increasingly in environmental remediation and energy production. This review provided a general overview of the latest research results of graphene/semiconductor composites nanocatalysts. Firstly, synthetic methods of graphene/semiconductor composites were summarized. The roles of graphene in promoting semiconductor photocatalytic performance including increasing the adsorption of reactants, expanding the range of light absorption and intensity, acting as a photosensitizer and electron transfer medium were then emphasized. Next, the performance and mechanisms in pollutants removal, disinfection, hydrogen evolution, CO2 reduction, selective oxidation, nitroaromatics reduction, sensing, supercapacitors and other fields were presented. Besides, the toxicity of graphene and graphene/semiconductor composites was also introduced to help understand the impact on living systems of the environment. Finally, perspectives and challenges of graphene/semiconductor composites for future development were proposed. This review gives a comprehensive and updated overview of graphene/semiconductor composites for environmental and energy applications and is expected to shed light on the further study in this exciting area.

Enhanced Photocatalytic Activities for Degradation of Dyes and Drugs by Crystalline Bismuth Ferrite-Modified Graphene Hybrid Aerogel

Abstract:Industrial wastewater contains diverse toxic dyes and drugs, which pollute the environment and poison creatures. Utilizing photocatalysts has been accepted to be an effective method to degrade water pollutions using solar light. Crystalline bismuth ferrite (Bi2Fe4O9) with a band gap of 1.9–2.0 eV is expected to be one of the most promising candidates for photocatalysts in the visible light region. Amorphous graphene is also a promising candidate as a photocatalyst owing to its excellent electronic and optical properties. Herein, a composite of Bi2Fe4O9/graphene aerogels (GAs) was prepared with a two-step hydrothermal method. The prepared Bi2Fe4O9 powders were confirmed to be successfully doped into GAs and evenly dispersed between graphene sheets. The Bi2Fe4O9/GA composite was utilized to perform photodegradation for organic dyes and antibiotic drugs under visible light irradiation, yielding efficiencies of 90.22%, 92.3%, 71.8% and 78.58% within 330 min for methyl orange, methylene blue, Rhodamine B and tetracycline hydrochloride, respectively. Such distinct photocatalytic activities overwhelmed the pure Bi2Fe4O9 powders of 14.10%, 22.19%, 13.98% and 48.08%, respectively. Additionally, the composite produced a degradation rate constant of 0.00623 min−1 for methylene blue, which is significantly faster than that of 0.00073 min−1 obtained by the pure powder. These results provide an innovative strategy for designing 3D visible-light-responsive photocatalysts combined with graphene aerogel for water purification.

Abstract:In order to achieve the degradation of Congo red dye in wastewater, a new type of three-dimensional porous composite catalyst PW7Mo3Cu2/PANI/MnO2 was prepared by using heteropoly acid [TBA]4H3[PW7Mo3Cu2O38(H2O)2] doped intermediate PANI/MnO2. Using IR, UV, SEM, XPS and other characterization techniques, it was confirmed that the heteropoly acid [TBA]4H3[PW7Mo3Cu2O38(H2O)2] was successfully doped into the intermediate PANI/MnO2 to form a three-dimensional porous structure. The results of N2 adsorption–desorption experiment indicated that the composite catalyst belongs to the type IV (a) mesoporous structure material and has a large pore size and specific surface area. Then, the composite catalyst PW7Mo3Cu2/PANI/MnO2 was used to photocatalyze the degradation of Congo red dye. Under the best photocatalytic conditions, the decolorization rate of Congo red dye reached 93.84%. After recovering and repeating the photocatalysis experiment three times, the decolorization rate of Congo red dye was 73.18%. The experimental results proved that the novel composite catalyst has a strong ability to degrade Congo red dye and reusability, and has potential application value.

Abstract:Both adsorption and advanced oxidation processes can achieve rapid removal of organic pollutants. Based on this, FeBiOBr was modified on the surface of three-dimensional graphene aerogel (3D rGA) to construct FeBiOBr/rGA composites. Using the surface adsorption properties of graphene to quickly adsorb pollutants, combined with photocatalytic Fenton degradation by FeBiOBr catalysts, the adsorption and in-situ photocatalytic Fenton multifield coupled degradation system was constructed by the consistency of adsorption and catalytic degradation sites. Experimental results showed that FeBiOBr/rGA has a 2.92-fold increase in the adsorption capacity for phenol compared with bulk rGA. Meanwhile, the degradation rate constant was 2.7 times higher than that of FeBiOBr because of the excellent electrical conductivity of graphene. In addition, it also exhibited excellent COD and TOC removal performance for different phenolic and coking wastewaters. The effects of graphene content, catalyst dosage, H2O2 concentration and other factors on the adsorption-catalytic degradation activity of the synergistic system were further investigated. Based on the influence of active species, the mechanism of FeBiOBr/rGA composite adsorption and in-situ catalytic degradation multifield coupling removal of pollutants was proposed. In addition, the 3D rGA could effectively solve the problem of difficult recycling of powder catalysts and has significant practical application potential.

Abstract:Abstract Metal nanoparticles play an essential role in catalyzing the degradation of dyes in industrial wastewater. In order to improve the catalytic reduction and discoloration performance of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) to cationic dyes and facilitate recovery, we report an improved method to prepare cellulose nanofibrils/polyvinyl alcohol (CNF/PVA) porous composite hydrogel and use it to support metal nanoparticles. Silver ions were reduced to Ag NPs by the in situ reduction method after being adsorbed on the surface of the hydrogel by electrostatic adsorption, and the maximum adsorption capacity was about 136.4 mg/g. The obtained CNF/PVA/Ag NPs (CPA) composite hydrogel was characterized by scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction, and energy dispersive spectroscopy. Furthermore, we demonstrate the efficient utilization of composite hydrogel as a container in the discoloration of methylene blue (cationic dye) and methyl orange (cationic dye) in the presence of NaBH 4 . The hydrogel was quickly recovered and reused without a decrease in activity for five cycles. It showed fantastic potential in water resources protection and catalytic application.

Abstract:The non-metallic catalyst graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) has attracted a significant amount of attention due to its excellent photocatalytic performance. The photocatalytic performance of g-C 3 N 4 has been further enhanced by the incorporation of graphene oxide (GO) as a composite catalyst. However, the enrichment and recovery of these two-dimensional composites after photocatalysis is still a difficult challenge. In this work, a visible light responsive graphene oxide/graphitic carbon nitride coated sponge three-dimensional composite (PU-GO/g-C 3 N 4 ) was prepared by electrostatic self-assembly using polyurethane sponge (PU) as a skeleton and g-C 3 N 4 as a photocatalyst. The degradation rate of rhodamine B (RhB) under visible light was used as an index to evaluate the photocatalytic performance of PU-GO/g-C 3 N 4 . The results demonstrate that during the photocatalytic degradation of RhB by PU-GO/g-C 3 N 4 , g-C 3 N 4 is the main photocatalyst, while the holes and the superoxide radicals generated by electron excitation are the main agents. As a bridge connecting PU and g-C 3 N 4 , GO improves the agglomeration phenomenon of g-C 3 N 4 on PU. Meanwhile, GO has excellent carrier mobility and inhibits the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes. Moreover, the presence of GO enhances the absorption of light and dyes. Overall, the addition of GO effectively enhances the photocatalytic performance of PU-GO/g-C 3 N 4 due to it enhances dye absorption, improves light energy utilization rate, and expedites transfer of photogenerated electrons. After 5 cycles, PU-GO/g-C 3 N 4 still exhibits an RhB degradation rate of 92.06%, demonstrating good stability and recycling performance. Abstract:Proper disposal of waste paper is an important waste-management concern. We developed a facile and inexpensive method to transform waste paper into graphene-tethered carbon fiber composite paper (GCCP). Urea was the only additive for the carbonization of the GCCP. The as-obtained GCCP exhibited high electrical conductivity, and GCCP/polydimethyl siloxane (GCCP/PDMS) composites showed good stretchability with great electromechanical stability. The surface of the GCCP membrane was observed to be superhydrophobic; this property apparently endowed the membrane with the ability to separate oil from water in our experiments, which makes GCCP a promising candidate material for cleanup of oil spills. The hierarchical structure, N doping feature and low decoration with Pt make GCCP a potential electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction, oxygen evolution and hydrogen evolution reactions with superior activity and high stability, and hence also a promising candidate for application as a direct working electrode in future energy systems.
