Abstract:Electricity generation in developing countries are dependent on fossil fuel based thermal power plants and introduction of electric vehicles will only shift the threat of emissions from operation stage to energy generation stage. India is one of the developing countries in south Asia where fossil fuel based power plants make major contribution in electricity generation. In this paper a detailed review on the challenges faced by the electric vehicles has been discussed and an analysis has been conducted on equivalent carbon emissions from electric vehicles by considering three cases in Indian scenario namely (a) present electricity generation, (b) power generation considering installed capacity and (c) vision 2022. Based on three scenarios, the main objective of this work is to understand the potential of electric vehicle to reduce the overall carbon emissions after considering the indirect carbon emissions from electricity generation and to highlight the importance of emission control techniques. Experimental investigation on the conversion efficiency of diesel oxidation catalysis system has been conducted for comparative study. The results of the analysis showed that the indirect carbon emissions from electric vehicles are higher than the carbon emissions from internal combustion engines for scenario 1 and 2. Whereas in scenario 3, the carbon emissions from electric and fossil fuel powered vehicles are found to be in the same range. DOC system had an average conversion efficiency of 56% for hydrocarbons and 59% for particle number emissions. Post treatment emission control systems in internal combustion engines will be the best possible solution as compared to electric vehicles for reducing the overall vehicular emissions until the renewable energy sources have major share in electricity generation. This article is protected by copyright.
