Abstract:A successful school start is possible with a long and collaborative transition process. In this action research, the one-week transition program in preschool education in Turkey was extended to 8 months and supported with teacher–parent communication to examine children’s transition experiences during the process. The data were collected from 23 Turkish and 2 Syrian children and their families through observation, interview and document analysis and administered to content analysis. The Turkish children were observed to start preschool education more willingly establishing positive relationships with their teachers and peers, while the Syrian children experienced more adaptation problems due to language barriers.

Abstract:The aim of this research is to investigate the effect of inclusive play and special movement education applied to disadvantaged and peer preschool children in Erzurum city center on their basic skills.22 students (10 disadvantaged children + 12 peer group children) consisting of disadvantaged children and peer children who were educated in special education and rehabilitation centers in the city center of Erzurum and participated voluntarily. Before the study, two seminars were given to the parents of the students, which determined the purpose and objective of the research. Students participated in a specially prepared game and movement training program for 45-60 minutes, 2 days a week during the summer period. Before starting the research, an interview and observation form consisting of 10 questions was prepared for the parents of the children and the results were recorded. At the end of the 2-month (8-week) period, interviews and observations were made with the parents of the children, and the last situation was recorded and compared with the previous situation.In the first parent interviews, the results of the research; it was observed that the children hesitated to participate in the study, they do not want to get close to other children, refrain from sharing game materials and avoid playing together and do not help. While they stated that they did not comply with the game discipline, they stated that at the end of the study program, their initial negative behavior developed completely in a positive way. In expert observations; it was observed that at the beginning, the children did not want to participate in the studies, did not listen to the volunteers, acted randomly, fought over the play materials used, and avoided playing together. While they observed that they behaved randomly, it was stated that the observations developed completely positively at the end of the research process.As a result, it was concluded that inclusive play and special movement training applied to disadvantaged preschool children and peers contributed positively to the social development of children.
Childhood Traditions and Difficulties of Syrian Families under Temporary Protection in Turkey: War, Immigration, and Children

Abstract:The fact that people move to another country to protect their families brings with it many difficulties. The purpose of this research is to analyze the child-rearing traditions and difficulties of a Syrian family under temporary protection with a preschool child and to reveal their experiences. The population of this research consists of the province of Kilis. Its participants are refugee families with preschool children who fled the civil war in Syria and came to Turkey. These interviews were held to gather information about the participants' social life before the war, the war period, the time of migration, settling in Turkey and child education. The codes were created by analyzing the content of the collected data, one of the qualitative analysis methods, and the codes were combined under the themes. As a result of the analysis of the data, the research findings; were gathered under four main themes: pre-war, war and migration, integration of refugee families to Turkey and child education and broken families. The research findings were discussed with the relevant studies in the literature, and suggestions were made in line with the findings.

Theory and Practice in Child Development

Abstract:The pre-school period is an important period in which significant progress is made in the development of the child and the construction of the future is made. Pre-school education has always been important in Türkiye and different studies have been carried out in each period. These studies have focused on the value and importance given to the child. As a matter of fact, before Turkey become a republic country in 1923, the child was seen as an important person who would shape the future and the importance of the family was emphasized in the education of the child. Before the Republic, different educational institutions were opened for the education of children. These developments continued in the Seljuk period and the early periods of the Ottoman Empire. After the proclamation of the Republic, primary education was given more importance due to the conditions of the country. Initiatives for the education of children were discussed in development plans and National Education Councils. At the same time, importance was given to the family education. During these developments, programs were created in parallel with the development of the period and priority was given to the training of teachers. Considering these topics, in this study, pre-school education in Türkiye, the development of the pre-school education program and pre-school teacher training are to be discussed.

Abstract:As a transition country, Kosovo faces many problems and challenges, especially in the field of the preschool education. As an issue of the early childhood education, among the new forms of child labor documentation, the portfolios are mentioned. Teachers build a rich picture of each child, combining strategies such as using the traditional tools of child study (for example, observations, anecdotal records, checklists) with newer documentation technologies such as photos, portfolios, and recorded conversations (New & Cochran, 2007). Purpose of this research was to gather data from preschool teacher, school teachers and parents regarding the children’s portfolios: the children portfolio in the preschool? How important are they for the primary school and for the parents? What the content? re some of issues that we research with this article.

Abstract:The aim of this study is to examine the availability of cultural heritage items in preschool children's books. In the research, the data have been obtained through document analysis, which is one of the qualitative research data collection techniques, from illustrated children's books in kindergartens in Adıyaman city center. Although 507 preschool children's books have been examined in the study, it has been found that the tangible and intangible cultural heritage items included in the books have been quite limited. The tangible cultural heritage items that stand out in preschool children's books are Peribacaları, Mount Nemrut, Great Wall of China, Big Ben Clock Tower; intangible cultural heritage items are Nasreddin Hoca and Karagöz and Hacivat. An important finding obtained is that more and more tangible and intangible cultural heritage items included in the UNESCO World Heritage list are included in the books.. Preschool children's books are seen as an important tool in creating awareness of cultural heritage and cultural heritage in children who are seen as tourists of the future. It is thought that enriching preschool children's books in terms of cultural heritage items will also be effective in the holiday preferences of families.
Attachment-based psychosocial programme for under-privileged school children with adverse life experiences in Istanbul, Turkey

Abstract:Children experiencing educational neglect are likely to experience the harm associated with adverse life experiences and a range of emotional and psychological challenges. Using attachment theory and psychosocial frameworks, we devised and implemented an intervention designed to ameliorate the deleterious effects of challenging behaviours in an elementary school situated in a deprived neighbourhood of Istanbul, Turkey. For a period of eight months, 160 pupils received a psychosocial intervention once a week. Children's patterns of behaviour, emotions, movements, interactivity, socialisation and interpersonal communications were observed during this period. Core activities of the intervention included library visits, reading, writing and listening games, maths games, drawing, animal animation, leaf making, ball games, parachuting games, colouring, hula-hoop and driver-car role plays. At the end of the intervention, one group of children made significant improvements in behavioural changes while no improvements were observed for another group. Although further research is required to generalize beyond the reference group, the findings suggest that a robust collaboration between inter-agency community partnership and universities can play a crucial role in responding to the needs of marginalized children with psychological and emotional problems.

Abstract:The present study was conducted with the aim of examining the relationships between the prosocial behaviors and emotion regulation skills of children aged 60-72 months attending pre-school educational institutions and their conceptions of moral and social rules. The sample group consists of 423 children (200 female and 223 male) aged 60-72 months and their families, selected among students attending kindergartens and pre-schools in Merkezefendi, Pamukkale, Tavas and Kale districts of the Denizli province using the Simple Random Cluster Sampling method in Turkiye. The "Preschool Children's Conceptions of Moral and Social Rules" scale was used to evaluate the conceptions of the children regarding moral and social rules while the "Prosocial Behavior Scale" and the "Emotion Regulation Checklist" were used to evaluate their prosocial behaviors and emotion regulation skills, respectively. The data were analyzed using the t-test and Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient (r) techniques. The study's findings revealed that a significant relationship between the variables of prosocial behaviors, emotion regulation and the conception of moral and social rules. The findings obtained from the analysis in this study were discussed within the scope of related studies in the literature and various suggestions were made for future studies within the framework of the conclusions reached.

Abstract:Using a convergent parallel mixed methods design, the present study examined children's screen time and social behaviors through parents' perceptions. The participants were 113 children and their parents for the quantitative strand and 42 randomly selected parents for the qualitative strand of the study. Parents reported on children's social behaviors and screen time in the quantitative strand, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with parents in the qualitative strand of the study. Quantitative data were analyzed using cluster analyses, and qualitative data were analyzed using an open-coding system; following that, the quantitative and qualitative results were collaboratively discussed. Using cluster analyses, children were categorized into two groups (positive and relatively social negative behaviors) that reflect their social behaviors during peer play context. Qualitative analyses identified parents' perceptions of their children's social behavior and screen time. Accordingly, qualitative results consistently supported the two groups categorized in the quantitative strand. In addition, parents' use of screen-related strategies was related to children's positive social behaviors. Findings from the current study suggest that considering children's engagement with screen time may contribute to a greater understanding of children's social behaviors.
The Effect of Integrated Turkish and Science Activities in Pre-School Education on Children's Environmental Perception

Abstract:Purpose of the Study: The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of integrated Turkish and science activities in the preschool period on children's environmental perception. Materials and Methods: A mixed-method approach was used in the research. In the qualitative dimension of the mixed method, a phenomenological design was employed, while in the quantitative dimension, a quasi-experimental design was used. The sample of the study consists of 20 children, with 10 children in the experimental group and 10 children in the control group. As the first stage of the experimental procedure, children in both the experimental and control groups were asked to draw an environment picture, and one-on-one interviews were conducted with the children regarding their drawings. The drawings were evaluated using a Draw An Environment Test-Rubric (DAET-R) and were attempted to be transformed into qualitative form with yellow and blue color tones. Additionally, the children's rubric scores were transferred to the SPSS 23 package program, and necessary analyses were conducted. In the implementation part of the study, nine integrated Turkish and science activities were applied to the experimental group over a period of nine weeks. A different illustrated children's book was used in each activity, and the activities were developed within the framework of these books. The control group, on the other hand, continued with the daily educational routines included in the preschool education program. As the final stage of the experimental part, children in both the experimental and control groups were asked to draw another environment picture, and one-on-one interviews were conducted with the children regarding their drawings. Findings: In the final tests of the experimental group, there was an increase in figures related to the environment in the drawings. It was found that the final test drawings of the children in the experimental group were related to the illustrated books used in the integrated activities. Significant differences were detected in the final tests of the experimental and control groups through statistical tests. Key Points: As a result of the study, it was determined that the change in environmental perception of the children in the experimental group, where integrated Turkish and science activities developed with illustrated children's books were applied, progressed more prominently compared to the children in the control group.

Abstract:The aim of this research is to develop contemporary peace education that can be implemented in the pre-school period to ensure global citizenship. In this study, action research design, one of the qualitative research methods, was used. The study group of this research consisted of five-year-old children who attend a public kindergarten and their parents, classroom teacher, and researcher. The data were collected by means of the peace value attitude questionnaire prepared for parents and classroom teachers, the technology-supported child interview form, the teacher diary form, and the researcher diary form. Research was carried out in three stages: needs analysis, implementation, and evaluation. Educational activities covering peace education were developed, and they were administered to the children for 12 weeks. Within the framework of the results obtained, it was determined that the five-year-old children who made up the study group consciously gained the value of peace, were sensitive to the multicultural structure, and strengthened their communication with their peers. In light of these results, we should develop integrated programs in preschool education, place the value of peace at the center, and provide peace education widely in the preschool period by all stakeholders for global citizenship.

Abstract:In this study, our objective was to examine the relationship between the self-perception and sexual development of children aged between five and six. The study group of the study included 110 children in the five–six age group attending pre-primary education institutions in Erzincan city center and their mothers. As part of this research, the DeMoulin Self-Concept Scale for Children was used to evaluate the children's self-perceptions, and the Family Form of the Selcuk Sexual Development Scale-Sexual Identity and Gender-Related Behavior Subscale for mothers was used to evaluate the children's sexual development. As a result of the research, we found that, in fact, there is a relationship between sexual identity and self-efficacy and self-esteem, which are the sub-dimensions of self-perception. We found that self-efficacy is a significant predictor of sexual identity; however, we could not establish unequivocally that there was a significant relationship between gender-related behavior and self-efficacy and self-esteem.

Abstract:The aim of this study is to determine preschool teachers' science education activities, problems they encounter and solutions they devise, and methods and techniques they use during those activities. Phenomenology, which is a qualitative research design, was used. The study sample consisted of 15 female preschool teachers of primary schools in the central district of the city of Muş, during the 2017–2018 academic year. Participants were recruited using criterion sampling, which is a purposeful sampling method. Study inclusion criteria were: (1) teaching children aged 60–66 months, (2) at least 3 years of professional experience, (3) voluntary participation, and (4) observations made in classrooms. Data were collected using a semi-structured interview form and through structured observations in participants' classrooms. Three teachers were excluded from the study because they gave superficial answers to probe questions. Twelve teachers were interviewed and observed. Structured observations were conducted weekly by the researchers for a 4 month period on specific dates in the classrooms of interviewees, and field notes were taken during each observation. Data were analyzed using inductive content analysis. To get a general idea for data coding, all interview transcriptions and field observation notes were read several times and video recordings were examined again and again. Interview and observational data were coded in the light of the sub-objectives of the study. Results show that materials in science centers are different from those that participants think should be available in science centers. Participants take into account such factors as children, budget parameters, and curriculum in making material selections. They mostly use direct instruction methods and demonstrate experiments in science activities. Observations show that there is a difference between theory and practice. Problems considered to be caused by physical conditions are actually due to the use of wrong methods. Participants are of the opinion that child-centered activities, into which recyclable materials and out-of-class settings are integrated, should be used to increase the quality of science education.

The Predictive Role of Preschool Children's Attachment on Social Competence, Anxiety, Aggression and Self-Control: Peer Relationships as a Mediator

Abstract:The main purpose of this study is to examine the predictive role of preschool children's attachment on social competence, anxiety, aggression, and self-control of 5-year-old children (60-71 months), and to test the mediating effect of peer relationships in this model. A total of 309 children participated in the study. The data of the study were collected through the teacher checklist of peer relationships, the social competence and behavior evaluation scale-30, the self-control rating scale which the teacher filled out, and the doll story completion task which the researcher used during the application process. Path analysis was used to explain the direct and indirect relationships between the variables, and a Sobel test was also used to determine the mediational role of peer relationships. The results showed that peer relationships had a mediating effect on parental attachment between anxiety, anger, social competence, and self-control. This study shows that the reflections of insecure attachment experienced in the first years of life can be reduced by peer relationships and the reflections of secure attachment can be strengthened by peer relationships.
Play Experiences and Perceptions of Young Children Living in Disadvantaged Socioeconomic and Cultural Contexts in Turkey

Abstract:This phenomenological study examined the play experiences and perceptions of eighteen 5- to 6-year-old children from three disadvantaged socioeconomic and cultural contexts in Turkey. Data were generated through semi-structured individual interviews with children. Results indicated that children's play experiences and perceptions were influenced by the context and cultural characteristics in which they lived. Children defined play as the various activities they choose to do primarily outdoors, and their play experiences varied in relation to their parents' attitudes, socioeconomic opportunities, culture-specific judgments, and affordances of their physical environment. Parents set limits on their children's play and play spaces due to safety concerns, possibility of damaging property, and responsibilities which the children were expected to fulfill. However, children were usually allowed to play outside within hearing distance of their parents, provided that they completed their homework and avoided risks and danger. Although the children had limited play materials, gender stereotypes were quite evident in their play materials and playmate preferences. Participant children reported that their parents usually did not play with them as well as did not prefer them to become playmates with children of the opposite gender.

Abstract:Öz 1983 yılında Özel Eğitime Muhtaç Çocuklar Yasası ile birlikte yasal olarak uygulamalarda yer alması beklenen kaynaştırma eğitimi, bugün okul öncesi eğitimde zorunlu eğitsel bir uygulamadır. Bu makalede, öncelikle kaynaştırma eğitiminin tanımı yapılmış ve kaynaştırma eğitiminin faydaları ile ilgili uluslararası alanyazındaki çalışmalar özetlenmiş, ardından Türkiye’de kaynaştırma eğitimi ve okul öncesinde kaynaştırma eğitimi konularına değinilerek yasal dayanaklarından bahsedilmiştir. Türkiye’de kaynaştırma eğitimiyle ilgili yapılan araştırmalar; (1) okul öncesi öğretmen ve öğretmen adaylarının bilgi, görüş ve tutumları, (2) sınıf içi uygulamalar, (3) sosyal beceriler, (4) derlemeler ve (5) diğer, başlıkları altında ele alınmıştır. Araştırmalar incelendiğinde, okul öncesi öğretmen ve öğretmen adaylarının kaynaştırma eğitimine yönelik olumlu tutuma sahip oldukları; ancak, daha fazla bilgiye gereksinim duydukları, sınıf içi geçişlerde belli başlı uygulamaları gerçekleştirdikleri fakat alanyazındaki uygulamaların hepsini sınıflarında uygulamak için desteğe gereksinim duydukları ve özel gereksinimli çocuklara sunulan sosyal beceri programlarının faydalı olduğu belirlenmiştir. Çalışmanın sonunda uygulamaya yönelik öneriler sunulmuştur. Abstract Inclusion is a compulsory educational practice for preschool children with disabilities in Turkey. In this article, first, the definition of inclusion is provided. Second, the benefits of inclusion are summarized using the international literature. Third, a summary of studies conducted in Turkey in relation to inclusive preschool education is presented followed by a description of the legal basis for inclusion in Turkey. The research focused on inclusive preschool education in Turkey was examined under five categories: (1) opinions and attitudes of preschool teachers and teacher candidates towards inclusion, (2) classroom practices, (3) social skills, (4) research summaries and literature reviews and (5) other studies. An examination of these studies has shown that preschool teachers and teacher candidates have positive attitudes towards inclusion, but they need more information for successful implementation of inclusion. Moreover, preschool teachers implement certain practices with respect to in-class transitions, however, they need more support to apply all recommended practices noted in the literature. In addition, social skills programs provided to children with special needs were beneficial. Recommendations for future practice are presented at the end of the paper.
A Study on the Factors Affecting Reading and Reading Habits of Preschool Children

Abstract:In the developing world, reading habit, which is one of the first habits of traditional education, continues primarily in the family and then in kindergartens. In this research, factors such as family, environment, kindergarten and libraries are discussed in terms of acquiring reading habit in preschool period and evaluations are made about the effects of these factors on reading habit. In this study, the results of the research on the factors in the reading habit of Ishık Kindergarten students of Ronaki Hawler Education Company in Erbil, Iraq are included. Within the scope of the research, one-on-one interviews were conducted with 106 children in the six-year age group who were closest to starting primary school among the kindergarten students and 20 kindergarten teachers and a questionnaire was conducted. In this process, the kindergarten was observed. Then, the data obtained from the questionnaires were analyzed in SPSS program. In addition, structured interviews provided information about activities that aimed at acquiring reading habits of kindergarten teachers. In the conclusion part of the study, the data obtained were evaluated in terms of the factors that enable children to acquire reading habits. The results of the study showed that families have a guiding role in having the children acquire the reading habit. In addition, it was concluded that the group of friends, the environment, various books and genres, kindergarten education and libraries were other important elements in this preparation period.
Sleep Habits of Turkish Preschool Children

Abstract:Purpose: This study aims to a) provide a detailed description of sleep habits and problems, b) to compare sleep habits and problems among 4-6-year-old typically developing Turkish children, c) to find out parental views on problem sleep behavior. Methods: Participants consisted of 702 parents. Children’s age ranged from 4 to 6 years. Demographics Information Survey and the Children’s Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ) were administered to parents. Results: Across different age groups bedtime was not different for weekdays. Bedtime during weekends, however, differed across different age groups. Older children were going to bed later. Wake-up time and bedtime for weekdays differed for children who attend preschool. Children attending preschool woke up earlier and went to bed earlier. Sleep duration did not differ for both weekdays and weekends. There was no gender difference in terms of bedtime, wake-up time, and sleep duration for both weekdays and weekends. However, girls’ daytime sleepiness scores and sleep onset delay scores were higher. Conclusions: Sleep problems are prevalent among young Turkish children. Comparing the CSHQ overall and subscale scores of this study with other studies, the most important differences were seen in the bedtime resistance and the sleep anxiety subscales. These discrepancies indicate a cultural difference in bedtime resistance and sleep anxiety of Turkish preschool children. Future research should investigate the effects of parenting and discipline on sleep behavior and problems. Effective intervention programs are needed in order to reduce problems related to bedtime resistance and sleep anxiety of Turkish preschoolers.

Abstract:One of the most important tasks of societies to maintain sustainable development is to ensure that children develop a positive attitude towards the environment and have knowledge about it. In early childhood, it is believed that the attitudes of children towards the environment and the values they learn will form the basis of the desired behaviors in their future lives. The comprehensive presentation of the studies in the area of pre-school environmental education is important in terms of presenting ideas to the teachers who will train children on this subject and to the researchers who will work in this field. The aim of this study is to review research carried out on environmental education in the pre-school period in Turkey between the years of 2012-2022. The study was conducted within the framework of descriptive content analysis. When the objectives of the studies were examined, it was seen that they mostly sought to understand attitudes towards the environment. Participants in the study were primarily pre-service teachers. It has been determined that scales were frequently employed as a data gathering instrument in studies that are generally carried out using the survey method. From this point of view, it is clear that majority of the studies are based on the quantitative approach. Quantitative approaches are mostly used to specify a universe's attributes. Quantitative approaches also display to reveal how the subject is distributed according to one or more variables. On the other hand, it is possible to propose that qualitative research methodologies be incorporated into the studies in order to provide in-depth information and providing a rich data source regarding the examined issue.
