Experiences and Revelations of Dealing with Population Aging in International Society

Abstract:Population aging is a common future vision in the world. The Aging process in the developed country is ahead of that in China and their innovations and reform measures dealing with aging society deserve our learning. In the aspect of coping with aging society, it is emphasized that the government should attach importance to top-level design of economic and social policies, encourage childbirth and positive immigrant projects, and promote human resource development and social participation of the elderly. In the aspect of the solving elderly problem, it is emphasized that the government, market, families and the elderly themselves should face it together. We should not only pay attention to the safeguard for the special elderly, but also reinforce the security to all the old people. It is necessary to advocate "the combination of medical care and the pension", complete health and social care system for the elderly, intensify social pension system and stabilize home-based care system, classify the services, achieve the aim that taking care for both the special group and the health group of the old at the same time.

Abstract:By 2050, the proportion of people over 60 years of age worldwide is expected to be 22 %, and the number of people over 80 is expected to triple by that time, reaching 426 million. Population aging threatens the sustainable functioning of national health care systems, since the increase in the proportion of the elderly population is accompanied by increased costs for the health care system and a decrease in the availability of medical care for other age groups. Based on the analysis and synthesis of data from foreign publications on the impact of population aging on the sustainability of the functioning of national healthcare systems, proposed measures and models of medical care that take into account changes in the age structure of the population are systematized. Analysis of foreign publications made it possible to identify the following challenges for the healthcare system associated with the aging population: rising costs of providing medical care, the need to increase emphasis on preventive measures, increasing prevalence and severity of chronic non-communicable diseases and comorbidity, inequality in access to medical care, expressed in territorial (regional), age and gender aspects, as well as determined by the socio-economic status of a person. Experts suggest that the most obvious and realistic solution to the problem is active prevention of chronic diseases and more intensive monitoring of the health status of the population. Digital solutions that provide disease prevention and remote monitoring of the health status of the elderly population, based on the use of machine learning technologies, artificial intelligence and telemedicine technologies, are identified as promising areas for limiting healthcare costs.
Older women in an aging world: achieving health across the life course

Abstract:This article, based on a report (Women, aging and health: achieving health across the life span) prepared for the WHO Global Commission on Women's Health under the guidance of WHO's Aging and Health Programme, presents demographic data that clearly demonstrate the need for recognition of the health of aging women as a global issue of major public health concern. The authors show that, while female life expectancy at birth is significantly different in developed and developing countries (because of high infant and maternal mortality in the latter), these differences tend to decrease for women in developing countries who reach middle age. The authors review the various facets of the "gender transition" brought about by demographic and epidemiological transitions, drawing attention to contrasts between the situation in developing countries in Asia and Latin America and that in Eastern Europe, for example. The role of older women as care-givers is discussed, as is the likelihood of a future increase in the proportion of older women living alone in the developing world (a factor which renders them particularly vulnerable in many socioeconomic and health respects). Suggestions are made on methodologies for monitoring health trends in aging women, and on the role of WHO in this respect. A basic goal for global strategies relating to the health of older women is formulated: reduction of the inequities in life expectancy between developed and developing countries.

Abstract:Objectives: The global increase in the older population, which is expected to reach 1.5 billion by 2050, poses significant challenges for publicly funded health care systems. Life expectancy, although positive, is leading to an increase in chronic diseases requiring complex and costly health and social solutions. This study explores key strategies to address these challenges. Design: Qualitative interviews followed by a survey. Setting and participants: The study involved experts, students, artificial intelligence, and participants at a congress. Methods: We first interviewed 5 experts from different countries representing health care management and psychology from Belgium, health economics from Canada, sociology from France, and geriatrics from Switzerland. In addition, a focus group session with medical students in physical therapy and queries to ChatGPT increased the range of perspectives. A synthesis of all opinions or insights was used to formulate concrete strategies. These strategies were incorporated into an online survey that was distributed to 215 participants of the Geriatric and Gerontologic Congress in Montreal, Canada, in September 2023. Results: All 20 potential solutions were duly acknowledged, with particular attention paid to the following 5 priorities: the urgent need to integrate geriatric training into the education of future health professionals, the promotion of home-based care models, the establishment of comprehensive and integrated care systems, the strengthening of primary care services, and the emphasis on primary prevention strategies. Conclusion and implications: This study highlights key priorities for addressing the health needs of the older population. By emphasizing education, home-based care, and integrated services and strengthening primary care and prevention, health systems can respond effectively to the challenges of an ageing population. Although these needs may not be entirely unmet, they indicate areas where existing services are insufficient in providing adequate coverage and support to ensure tailored and sustainable health care solutions for older people.

Abstract:Populations globally are ageing, in part due to dramatic increases in life expectancies, forcing a reconsideration of what constitutes being "elderly" and "old." The proportion of older adults living with disability may be decreasing, yet older individuals are living with a significant burden of chronic disease, geriatric impairments in cognition, vision and hearing and reduced physiological reserve (frailty). Caring for a growing number of medically complex individuals has implications for medical workforce size and composition, health programmes and expenditure. Future responses to an ageing population will require further innovation in health-care delivery models, and increasing representation of older adults in clinical trials.

Abstract:The challenge of global population aging has been brought into sharper focus by the financial crisis of 2008. In particular, growing national debt has drawn government attention to two apparently conflicting priorities: the need to sustain public spending on pensions and health care versus the need to reduce budget deficits. A number of countries are consequently reconsidering their pension and health care provisions, which account for up to 40% of all government spending in advanced economies. Yet population aging is a global phenomenon that will continue to affect all regions of the world. By 2050 there will be the same number of old as young in the world, with 2 billion people aged 60 or over and another 2 billion under age 15, each group accounting for 21% of the world's population.

Abstract:Population ageing is both an achievement and challenge, an achievement as longevity is the result of successful prevention and control of diseases, decreasing fertility rates and overall socio-economic development. It is at the same time a challenge as the increasing number of older people and the resultant demographic shift are accompanied by the need to adjust and scale up the social and health care systems. The challenges are of particular relevance to the developing world where the demographic shift is occurring much faster. Comprehensive efforts based on country contexts are required in the following areas: (a) older persons and development, (b) health and well-being and (c) enabling and supportive environments to address population ageing needs. This article, however, focuses only on three most crucial issues, that is, livelihood, health care systems and care of the older dependent people. Measures to sustain the livelihood of older people, to align the health systems to provide care and to develop long-term care systems are highlighted. Person-centred care, integration and functional capacity are advocated. Further, ageing in place or living in one’s own home, community or a place with the closest fit with the person’s needs and preferences is considered very important for healthy ageing. In terms of enhancing livelihood, major policy changes and reforms to improve the social security systems and expanding coverage as well as increasing the amounts to minimum subsistence levels are highlighted. Another area which needs to be strengthened is the tradition of existing family support systems. The health systems alignment required are reflected for each health system building block, and focuses mainly on (a) developing and ensuring access to services that provide older-person-centred care; (b) shifting the clinical focus from disease to intrinsic capacity; and (c) developing or reorienting the health workforce to provide care as per alignment. Long-term care systems would best meet the needs of dependent older people if families, communities, civil society organisations and private sector are equally involved while governments play leadership roles in setting up and monitoring quality.

Abstract:Ageing societies dominating global demographics is not new. However, the pace of global population ageing is causing disquietude. In 2017, the global population over age 60 years exceeded those below 5 years for the first time in history, and only 3 years later, the population over age 65 surpassed those below 5.1,2 The US took 72 years to double its proportion of population over age 65 from 7% to 14% while Sweden took 85 years, but Asia has been projected to achieve this in about 23 years, with Singapore having taken 20 years.3 This unprecedented ageing acceleration in populations results from longer individual lifespans due to improvements in healthcare and population health, combined with a steady decline in total fertility rate—the latter being the mean number of children per woman in her lifetime. Unfortunately, the number of years in good health has not kept pace with lengthening lifespan; consequently, time spent in poor health is increasing.4 This demographic change, along with a widening healthspan and lifespan gaps will have dramatic impact on economic growth, workforce composition, healthcare, housing and transportation.

Abstract:Populations are ageing at varying rates of development. Countries with developed economies have experienced such changes to their population structures. Examinations have been conducted with regard to how respective societies can accommodate the said changes in their health and social systems, but this research mostly focuses on more developed regions rather than lowerincome countries. This paper discussed the experience of ageing populations in developing economies, which comprise the majority of the global older population. They display a vastly different experience from high-income countries, especially when viewed within the level of world regions. The cases presented here were from Southeast Asian countries in order to have a wide range of examples in terms of differences in country-income categories. In lower and middle-income countries, there are older adults who: continue working as their primary income source, are nonmembers of pension systems, and provide intergenerational support rather than only receiving it. The COVID-19 pandemic situation was also included here, as policies were reformed to address current needs that highlighted the challenging situation of older adults. The populations of countries that have yet to age substantially, especially those in the least-developed regions, can utilise this paper's recommendations in order to prepare for changes in the age structures of their societies.

Common perceptions of an ¿old age crisis' are shown to result from a narrow reading of demographic data. Future changes in the age structure of the population will be no greater than those already experienced and accommodated in the last fifty years, and estimates of demographic dependency ratios provide an unreliable basis for future economic projections. Although population ageing will require a larger proportion of income to be transferred from years of work to years of retirement, this cost cannot be significantly reduced by shifting from public to private pension systems." Abstract:Introduction to Social change due to aged population Increased elderly population in Europe has many factors, it took decades what is happening now. Europe’s low fertility rate, Europe’s migration from developing to developed country, high life expectancy and immigration laws. The developmental strategies of G20 countries are significantly interlinked with the economic and population development policies. The recognition of ageing population is followed by the Japan’s ageing population process which is also mentioned in most of the Eu data on comparison for the ageing population strategies. It is a visible change that social and economic developments causes higher life expectancy and better health in Europe.The average middle age is increasing, and it is predicted about 4.5 years by 2019 to 2050 it may reach 48.2 years as European middle age. In the most developed parts of the world, elderly population was discussed long ago, and serious steps were taken for global improvements for older people. As the life expectancy increases dependency increases that creates pressure to fulfil the needs of elderly for health, socially, and economically. Increasing number of elderly populations, is actual rise in social, cultural, and economic responsibilities for welfare systems, health care systems and individuals. More elderly people, more reliance needed number of old age homes, elderly rehabilitation centers and Palliative care centers are increased. Population ageing is not a sudden change in population, but it took decades to consider about the population phenomenon. The European social change has major cause of ageing population that may has dark impact to the future perspective. In current situation birth rate is low, mortality rate is also low and life expectancy is high which is creating a lot pressure on the economic growth and to run the economic cycle the labour force is insufficient, health care systems are updating each year since COVID pandemic and system failure was visible in many OECD countries as well in such condition there is a lot more pressure on the women to balance birth ratio at the same time women is considered as “Sandwich Generation” by some of the European researchers, women cares for the both younger and the older generation nowadays. Such ageing population determinants push the policy makers to design such policies and laws to combat this situation to secure future generations. Some of the EU policies to promote Active ageing and solidarity between generations, Silver Economy project to provide elderly jobs to decrease dependency ratio and Healthy ageing programs are running but still there is long way to show up positive results if migration policies will not be softened at certain points to keep achieving sustainable development goals in Europe.

Abstract:Many countries in the developing world are experiencing rapid population aging, prompting concerns that this will have adverse effects on their socioeconomic advancement and on the well-being of older populations. How these forces play out in the coming years is subject to many unknowns, including world and country specific economic conditions, social changes related to family dynamics, urbanization and education, and the policies and programs adopted. What can be foreseen with more clarity is the composition of the future elderly in terms of characteristics like education, marital status, and number of children, which relate directly to their well-being on several dimensions, as well as to trends in the larger society. This paper uses the demographic technique of cohort projection to generate profiles of the elderly to 2050 on key characteristics for a set of 13 developing countries that vary by region, size, economic level, and cultural traditions. Findings show dramatic shifts in the educational attainment and family size of the elderly over the next 30–40 years. Implications of these changes for policy and program development are discussed.

Abstract:Population aging is one of the most important demographic features that has come into prominence in the twenty-first century. In general, longevity has increased while fertility has declined resulting in an increase in the proportion of the older people. Aging of the population affects all aspects of the society including health, social security, education, socio-cultural activities, family life and the labor market. Regarding the latter, a decline in the young population of working age lowers the labour force participation rate, leading to a rise in the proportion of retired people. While governments in both developing and developed countries primarily focus on the negative effects of this for socio- demographic development, they have often also considered how such labour shortages can be mitigated by increasing the retirement age. Regarding care of the elderly, if fertility continues decreasing then this will inevitably lead to a lack of care workers, both paid and unpaid, especially, for elderly people. The social and economic provision of care still creates gender dilemmas for societies by narrowing the range of employment opportunities for women. As caring responsibilities are in general better fulfilled by women, high demand for paid care workers will increase women’s participation in the labor market in place of their role as unpaid care workers in the household. This paper analyzes possible changes in several variables, including labour force participation, the pension system, retirement age and labour supply. It places special emphasis on a variety of demographic and policy forces that are vitally important for evaluating the impact of population aging on economic growth. It also considers the implications of these developments for closing the gender gap in pension provision. It ends by offering some policy options aimed at forming the active policies that are essential for coping with the world’s rapidly increasing number of older people.

Abstract:Population aging is a global issue. The problem is especially critical in societies, such as China and India, where there has been both rapid aging of the population and a tradition that children are the primary caregivers for their elderly parents who are no longer independent. This article discusses a variety of options for various types of professional and non-professional caregivers and services for the elderly in their homes used in the U.S. and how technology has been used to support this heterogeneous model of caregiving. Efforts have been made to coordinate among caregivers and outside services and track changes in health conditions effectively over time through the greater use of technology. These ideas offer a possible path for other societies, such as China and India, facing growing health needs and limited resources to care for the elderly.
