Abstract:A porous carbon material was prepared from quinoa husk (QH) by carbonization and chemical activation with KOH. A series of experiments, including SEM (Scanning electron microscopy), FT-IR (Fourier transform infrared), XRD (X-ray diffraction), Raman, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and N2 adsorption/desorption, were carried out on the porous carbon produced from quinoa husk (PC–QH). The results showed that PC–QH was mainly composed of activated carbon and graphite. Moreover, PC–QH exhibited a high level of porosity with a BET (the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller theory) surface area of 1713 m2 g−1. As a representative dye, malachite green (MG) was selected to evaluate the performance of PC–QH to absorb the contaminants in dyeing wastewater. In batch adsorption experiments, PC–QH exhibited a high adsorption rate toward malachite green (MG). An uptake capacity of 599.90 mg g−1 was achieved in the initial 5 min, and the MG adsorption capacity of PC–QH reached 1365.10 mg g−1, which was higher than many other adsorbents. The adsorption data were well fitted with the Freundlich isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. PC–QH also displayed a high absorption rate to rhodamine B (RhB), methyl violet (MV), methylene blue (MB), and methyl orange (MO). The results in this study suggest that PC–QH can be a promising adsorbent for quick treatment of dyeing wastewater.

Abstract:Block copolymer based porous carbon fibers (PCFs) have hierarchical pores, high surface areas, and excellent electrical/ion conductivities. Herein, PCF is synthesized from poly(methyl methacrylate)‐block‐poly(acrylonitrile) and utilized for organic dye removal. The PCF contains hierarchical macro‐, meso‐, and micropores with a surface area of 780 m2 g−1. The electrosorptive behavior of PCF is well described by the Langmuir isotherm and the Weber–Morris model. Based on the model, the interconnected hierarchical pores contribute to easy accessibility of dye ions to the inner surface sites within PCF, resulting in a high electrosorption capacity of 1360 mg g−1, reaching ≈87% of the theoretical maximum. The PCF shows a capacity loss of <0.5% over ten cycles during a 240 h operation period. Thanks to the hierarchical pores that allow for rapid ion desorption, the PCF can easily be regenerated. Lastly, depending on the electrode configuration, the PCF can selectively remove anionic dye, cationic dye, or both. The findings herein provide a fundamental understanding of electrosorptive behavior of block copolymer based porous carbon fibers, enabling future development in filtration applications.

Abstract:The growth of white-rot fungi is related to the superior infiltrability and biodegradability of hyphae on a lignocellulosic substrate. The superior biodegradability of fungi toward plant substrates affords tailored microstructures, which benefits subsequently high efficient carbonization and chemical activation. Here, the mechanism underlying the direct growth of mushrooms toward the lignocellulosic substrate is elucidated and a fungi-enabled method for the preparation of porous carbons with ultrahigh specific surface area (3439 m2 g-1 ) is developed. Such porous carbons could have potential applications in energy storage, environment treatment, and electrocatalysis. The present study reveals a novel pore formation mechanism in root-colonizing fungi and anticipates a valuable function for fungi in developing the useful porous carbons with a high specific surface area.
Biological pretreatment with white rot fungi for preparing hierarchical porous carbon from Banlangen residues with high performance for supercapacitors and dye adsorption

Abstract:White rot fungi possess superior infiltrability and biodegradability on lignocellulosic substrates, allowing them to form tailored microstructures which are conducive to efficient carbonization and chemical activation. The present research employed white rot fungus pretreatment as a viable approach for preparing porous carbon from Banlangen residues. The resultant F-A-BLGR-PC prepared by pretreating Banlangen residues with white rot fungi followed by carbonization and activation has a hierarchical porous structure with a high specific surface area of 898 m2 g-1, which is 43.4% greater than that of the unprocessed sample (R-BLGR-PC). When used as an electrode for supercapacitors, the F-A-BLGR-PC demonstrated a high specific capacitance of 308 F g-1 at 0.5 A g-1 in 6 M KOH electrolyte in three-electrode configuration. Moreover, the F-A-BLGR-PC based symmetric supercapacitor device achieved a superb cyclic stability with no obvious capacitance decay after 20,000 cycles at 5 A g-1 in 1 M Na2SO4 electrolyte. Additionally, the F-A-BLGR-PC sample was found to be an ideal adsorbent for removing methyl orange (MO) from water, exhibiting an adsorption ability of 173.4 mg g-1 and a maximum removal rate of 86.6%. This study offers a promising method for the preparation of a porous carbon with a high specific surface area in a biological way using white rot fungi pretreatment, and the derived carbon can not only be applied in energy storage but also in environmental remediation, catalysis, and so on.

Abstract:Cellulosic biomass carbon based diatomite composite powders are synthesised in situ via the hypoxia pyrolysis method, and the micro-structure, surface morphology and performance of the as-prepared samples are characterised. When the concentration of the diatomite increases, the carbonaceous structure of the composites is highly disordered, the surface functional groups increase, and the typical porous structure of cellulosic biomass carbon based porous diatomite composite is measured. The adsorption capacity of organic dyes onto biomass carbon composite is enhanced. As the composite has many pore channels in the mesoporous region (especially for 2∼10 nm), porous diatomite with excellent hydraulic conductivity favours a conducting MB solution and improves the chemisorption performance (153.2 mg/g) of biomass carbon in the composite.
Influence of mixed alkali on the preparation of edible fungus substrate porous carbon material and its application for the removal of dye

Abstract:Edible fungus substrate (EFS) is a kind of agricultural waste produced by the cultivation of edible fungus. Improper handling of a large quantity of EFS may lead to environmental pollution. In this work, three porous carbon materials (PCEFS), derived from EFS, were prepared using simple techniques, including carbonization and chemical activation. Three types of alkalis were used as activators to investigate the different physicochemical properties of PCEFS (PCEFS-MA, PCEFS-K, and PCEFS-Na), which aims to clarify the influence of mixed alkali (MA) on the preparation method. The textural characterization of the PCEFS showed that the treatments produced some of changes, especially in the surface area and the structure of pores. Besides, synthetic dye Rhodamine B (RhB) was selected as the model dye to test the adsorption properties, including the effects of pH, the adsorption kinetics, and the adsorption isotherms. Moreover, the maximum adsorption capacities of 1497 mg g-1, 1103 mg g-1, and 1055 mg g-1 for PCEFS-MA, PCEFS-K, and PCEFS-Na at the pH value of 9 were observed, which were higher than some of the contemporary adsorbents. This study has given evidence that MA can serve as an efficient activator for preparing porous carbon material.
3D Hierarchical Porous Activated Carbon Derived from Bamboo and Its Application for Textile Dye Removal: Kinetics, Isotherms, and Thermodynamic Studies

Abstract:In this study, activated carbons were prepared from bamboo via carbonization and successive KOH activation by tuning the post-treatment procedure. The resultant carbons possessed high surface area, high oxygen doping, and 3D hierarchical porous structure with interconnected micro-, meso- and macropores. These features resulted in ultra-excellent adsorption capacity for rhodamine B (> 1200 mg/g). Furthermore, the kinetic and isotherm experimental data were best described by pseudo-second kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model, respectively. The adsorption of RhB onto the as-synthesized carbons was a spontaneous endothermic process. The π–π stacking, hydrogen bond, and acid-base interaction were proposed to account for the adsorption mechanism. Moreover, SiO2 in bamboo-based carbon functioned as frameworks and its removal via alkali treatment led to the collapse of porous structure, decreasing surface area, pore volume, and O heteroatom doping, consequently dropping the adsorption performance. Overall, bamboo as an abundant and renewable biomass could be considered as a potential precursor for the production of excellent adsorbent for wastewater purification.

Abstract:Three-dimensional porous carbon was fabricated using lotus leaves as a renewable precursor. The as-synthesized carbon had a high surface area (3601 m2/g), suitable O–N–S self-doping, and three-dimensional (3D) architecture with interconnected micro/meso/macropores, together with proper pore size distribution. Consequently, these admirable features endowed porous carbon as a superadsorbent for dye removal with ultrahigh adsorption capacity for rhodamine B (9444.39 mg/g) and reliable cyclability (>97% capacitance retention after 10 cycles). The adsorption of dye onto the as-prepared carbon was a spontaneous endothermic process and followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model. The π–π stacking, hydrogen bond, and acid–base interactions were proposed to mainly account for the combination of the adsorbate and the adsorbent. Overall, these values indicated the high-performance biomass-derived carbon as a dye adsorbent and may boost the large-scale production and application of 3D hierarchical porous carbon with heteroatom doping in the field of wastewater treatment.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Hydrothermal carbonization procedure is effective to transform biowaste into coal-like hydrochar, which can be further used as renewable source to produce porous carbons on the use of water treatment. Here, hierarchical porous carbons were produced by shells of bamboo shoot (BSS) based on hydrothermal treatment and KOH activation, under the assistance of melamine. The surface area of carbons was up to 3250 m2/g with multi-level pore architecture, endowing them to be potential adsorbents in dyes removal i.e. Rhodamine B (RhB), where hierarchical mesopores were formed by foaming effect of melamine. Experimental kinetic data had better accordance with pseudo-second-order model, and the equilibrium state reached after contact time of 300 min with equilibrium RhB capacity up to be 3860 mg/g in 500 mg/L solution at 25 °C. Langmuir model was suitable to describe removal behavior of carbons containing well-developed mesopores as an increase of concentration. Importantly, the determined maximum capacity of RhB was highly up to 5398 mg/g, attributing to the synergetic aspects of porosity, pyrrolic-N configurations and hierarchical architecture.

Abstract:Converting waste resource into porous carbon toward contaminant capturing is a crucial strategy for realizing "treating waste with waste". Inspired by bread baking process, the soybean meal activated carbon (SAC) with multimodal pore structures was developed via thermally remodeling the pores of waste soybean meal. The obtained SAC-3-800 has ultra-high specific surface area (3536.952 m 2 /g), as well as a hierarchically porous structure. SAC-3-800 exhibits extremely high adsorption capacity for methylene blue (MB) (3015.59 mg/g), methyl orange (MO) (6486.30 mg/g), and mixed dyes (8475.09 mg/g). The hierarchically porous structure enabled fast adsorption kinetics of SAC-3-800 for MB and MO (∼30 min). Additionally, SAC-3-800 shows excellent dynamic adsorption and regeneration performance, exhibiting great potential for industrial applications. This work showcases a feasible method for synthesizing hierarchically porous carbon with outstanding adsorption performance that can simultaneously achieve efficient treatment of dye-wastewater and value-added utilization of waste resources.

Abstract:Porous carbon membranes were favorably fabricated through the pyrolysis of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) precursors, which were prepared with a template-free technique-thermally induced phase separation. These carbon membranes possess hierarchical pores, including cellular macropores across the whole membranes and much small pores in the matrix as well as on the pore walls. Nitrogen adsorption indicates micropores (1.47 and 1.84 nm) and mesopores (2.21 nm) exist inside the carbon membranes, resulting in their specific surface area as large as 1062 m(2)/g. The carbon membranes were used to adsorb organic dyes (methyl orange, Congo red, and rhodamine B) from aqueous solutions based on their advantages of hierarchical pore structures and large specific surface area. It is particularly noteworthy that the membranes present a selective adsorption towards methyl orange, whose molecular size (1.2 nm) is smaller than those of Congo red (2.3 nm) and rhodamine B (1.8 nm). This attractive result can be attributed to the steric structure matching between the molecular size and the pore size, rather than electrostatic attraction. Furthermore, the used carbon membranes can be easily regenerated by hydrochloric acid, and their recovery adsorption ratio maintains above 90% even in the third cycle. This work may provide a new route for carbon-based adsorbents with hierarchical pores via a template-free approach, which could be promisingly applied to selectively remove dye contaminants in aqueous effluents.

Abstract:Biodegradable porous materials based on natural lignocellulosic biomass have multiple advantages of low cost, lightweight, non-toxicity, and the potential in place of non-biodegradable petrochemical products. However, the fabrication process for the porous materials was complicated by the slow and costly prefreeze or supercritical drying methods. Herein, a facile and green/clean strategy was presented to fabricate corncob and willow wood porous materials in ambient conditions. The effect of biomass solution concentration and preparation condition on porous material morphology structure was investigated systematically by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Further, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), Brunauer-Emmet-Teller (BET) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were used to estimate the structure and thermostability of the porous materials. Furthermore, the adsorptive properties of the biomass porous materials towards dye methylene blue and oil were evaluated. The biomass porous materials with a fluffy and porous structure were readily obtained via this procedure and showed effective adsorption capacity for dye methylene blue and oil.
Ultrasonic-assisted fungi modification of lignocellulose-derived hierarchical porous carbon for efficient desalination

Abstract:Biomass materials have received increasing attention due to their eco-friendly, high availability and low costs. However, these biomass materials have stubborn structural characteristics, which require specific pretreatment methods to promote practical value. Herein, we reported a novel strategy of ultrasonic-fungi pretreatment of lignocellulose to obtain biomass-based hierarchical porous carbon (LSC-FU). The structure of LSC-FU enables the fabricated electrode to exhibit high conductivity and rapid ion transport properties, with capacitance retention of 99.7 % after 5000 consecutive cycles. And it shows a high adsorption capacity (500 mg·L−1) of 29.39 mg·g−1 with a 94.6 % adsorption capacity retention rate in the electrosorption test. The lignocellulose-based porous carbon electrodes obtained by this effective pretreatment method have great potential for the practical application of CDI. This work provides original outlooks to prepare high-performance carbon electrodes. It emphasizes the significance of sustainable development and green environmental protection by using natural biomass materials to prepare porous carbon materials.

Hierarchically Porous Carbon by Activation of Shiitake Mushroom for Capacitive Energy Storage

Abstract:We present a facile yet effective two-step activation method to prepare a hierarchically porous carbon with natural shiitake mushroom as the starting materials. The first step involves the activation of shiitake mushroom with H3PO4, while the second step is to further activate the product with KOH. The resulting carbon is comprised of abundant micro-, mesopores and interconnected macropores that has a specific surface area up to 2988m2g−1 and pore volume of 1.76cm3g−1. With the unique porous nature, the carbon exhibited a specific capacitance of 306 and 149Fg−1 in aqueous and organic electrolyte, respectively. Moreover, this carbon also shows a high capacitance retention of 77% at large current density of 30Ag−1 and exhibited an outstanding cycling stability with 95.7% capacitance preservation after 15,000 cycles in 6M KOH electrolyte. The far superior performance as compared with those of the commercially most used activated carbon RP20 in both aqueous and non-aqueous electrolyte demonstrates its great potential as high-performance supercapacitor electrode. The two-step method developed herein also represents a very attractive approach for scalable production of various functional carbon materials using diverse biomasses as starting materials.
Enzymatic extract containing lignin peroxidase immobilized on carbon nanotubes: Potential biocatalyst in dye decolourization

Abstract:The majority of the textile dyes are harmful to the environment and potentially carcinogenic. Among strategies for their exclusion, the treatment of dye contaminated wastewater with fungal extract, containing lignin peroxidase (LiP), may be useful. Two fungi isolates, Pleurotus ostreatus (PLO9) and Ganoderma lucidum (GRM117), produced the enzymatic extract by fermentation in the lignocellulosic residue, Jatropha curcas seed cake. The extracts from PLO9 and GRM117 were immobilized on carbon nanotubes and showed an increase of 18 and 27-fold of LiP specific activity compared to the free enzyme. Also, LiP from both fungi extracts showed higher Vmax and lower Km values. Only the immobilized extracts could be efficiently reused in the dye decolourization, contrary, the carbon nanotubes became saturated and they should be discarded over time. This device may offer a final biocatalyst with higher catalytic efficiency and capability to be reused in the dye decolourization process.

Abstract:Porous carbon material with high specific surface area was prepared from soybean dreg by a simple and effective two-step method (high temperature pyrolysis and activation). The structural characteristics of the synthesized carbon were evaluated by Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), N2 adsorption/desorption measurements/techniques, an elemental analyzer (EA), scanning electron microscopy equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), an X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Raman spectroscopy (Raman), a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The specific surface area of SDB-6-K was 2786 m2 g−1, the pore volume was 2.316 cm3 g−1, and the average pore size was 3.326 nm. The high specific surface area and effective functional groups of carbon material promoted the adsorption of methylene blue. The maximum adsorption capacity of SDB-6-K to methylene blue was 2636 mg g−1 at 318 K. The adsorption kinetic and isotherm data were most suitable for pseudo-second-order and Langmuir equations. The results showed that the adsorbent had excellent adsorptive ability and had good practical application potential in the field of dye wastewater treatment in the future.

Preparation of hierarchical porous carbons from sodium carboxymethyl cellulose via halloysite template strategy coupled with KOH-activation for efficient removal of chloramphenicol

Abstract:Porous materials applied in environmental remediation have received researchers’ extensive attention recently, but the related green and convenient preparation method is rarely reported. Here, we recommended a green and convenient strategy for the fabrication of porous material via aqueous foam templates, which was synergistically stabilized by Codonopsis pilosula (CP) and clay minerals of attapulgite (APT). The characterization results revealed that the APT was modified by organic molecules leached from CP and anchored at the air-water interface, which improved the foam stability significantly. The novel porous material of polyacrylamide/Codonopsis pilosula/attapulgite (PAM/CP/APT) templated from the aqueous foam via a polymerization reaction had excellent adsorption capacity for the cationic dyes methyl violet (MV) and methylene blue (MB), and the adsorption capacity can reach 755.85 mg/g and 557.64 mg/g, respectively. More importantly, the adsorption capacity of spent adsorbent material was still over 200 mg/g after being recycled five times through a simple carbonization process, and then it was added to the plant pot, the total biomass was increased by about 86.42%. This study provided a green and sustainable pathway for the preparation, application and subsequent processing of porous materials.
