Salt in the wound: The interfering effect of road salt on acidified forest catchments

Abstract:Atmospheric acidic depositions have strongly altered the functioning and biodiversity of Central European forest ecosystems. Most impacts occurred until the end of the 20(th) century but the situation substantially improved thereafter caused by legal regulations in the late 1980's to reduce acidifying atmospheric pollution. Since then slow recovery from acidification has been observed in forested catchments and adjacent waters. However, trends of recovery are inconsistent and underlying mechanisms diminishing recovery are still poorly understood. We propose that the input of road salt can significantly affect acidity regime and acidification recovery of forest ecosystems. By comparing the discharge hydro-chemistry and plant community composition of springs fed by forested catchments with and without high levels of salt input over two decades we observed a significant suppression of recovery and elevated levels of nutrient leaching (K(+), Ca(2+) and Mg(2+)) in highly salt contaminated catchments. We show that the pollution of near-surface groundwater (interflow) by road salt application can have lasting effects on ecosystem processes over distances of several hundred metres apart from the salt emitting road.

Abstract:We simulated water chemical acidification and recovery in a humic, forested catchment in Norway. In the transition from anthropogenic to natural acidification in the current era of low acid deposition, climate becomes a more important driver of surface water acidity. In humic surface waters, organic acidity returns to preindustrial levels under low sulfur deposition. Depleted base cation stores may be replenished by enhanced weathering, partly compensating the impacts of a wetter climate. Five decades of monitoring data (1974–2022) at the acidified forested catchment of Langtjern in southern Norway document strong chemical recovery and browning of surface water, related to changes in sulfur (S) deposition. Further recovery is likely to be impacted by future air quality and climate, through catchment processes sensitive to climate change, where the relative importance of these drivers of recovery is poorly known. Here, we explore the importance of the aforementioned drivers for recovery using the well‐established process‐oriented Model of Acidification of Groundwater In Catchments (MAGIC) with historical and projected deposition and climate from 1860 to 2100. New in MAGIC are (i) a solubility control of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from S deposition, which allows inclusion of the role of organic acids in chemical recovery and (ii) climate‐dependency of weathering rates. MAGIC successfully described observed chemical recovery and browning, and the change toward organic acid dominated acidification status. Hindcasts of pH predicted lower preindustrial pH than previously modeled with MAGIC (simulated without S‐dependency of DOC solubility). Future deposition resulted in limited further recovery. Climate scenarios indicated a substantially wetter future, leading to increased base cation losses and slight surface water reacidification. A sensitivity analysis revealed that a 25%–50% increase of weathering rates was needed to reach preindustrial acid‐neutralizing capacity in 2100, provided S deposition is reduced to a minimum. We predict that the limited chemical recovery from reduced S deposition will be counteracted by climate‐driven reacidification from base cation losses, but that enhanced weathering rates could partly compensate these losses.

The response of soil solution chemistry in European forests to decreasing acid deposition

Abstract:Acid deposition arising from sulphur (S) and nitrogen (N) emissions from fossil fuel combustion and agriculture has contributed to the acidification of terrestrial ecosystems in many regions globally. However, in Europe and North America, S deposition has greatly decreased in recent decades due to emissions controls. In this study, we assessed the response of soil solution chemistry in mineral horizons of European forests to these changes. Trends in pH, acid neutralizing capacity (ANC), major ions, total aluminium (Altot ) and dissolved organic carbon were determined for the period 1995-2012. Plots with at least 10 years of observations from the ICP Forests monitoring network were used. Trends were assessed for the upper mineral soil (10-20 cm, 104 plots) and subsoil (40-80 cm, 162 plots). There was a large decrease in the concentration of sulphate (SO42-) in soil solution; over a 10-year period (2000-2010), SO42- decreased by 52% at 10-20 cm and 40% at 40-80 cm. Nitrate was unchanged at 10-20 cm but decreased at 40-80 cm. The decrease in acid anions was accompanied by a large and significant decrease in the concentration of the nutrient base cations: calcium, magnesium and potassium (Bc = Ca2+ + Mg2+ + K+ ) and Altot over the entire dataset. The response of soil solution acidity was nonuniform. At 10-20 cm, ANC increased in acid-sensitive soils (base saturation ≤10%) indicating a recovery, but ANC decreased in soils with base saturation >10%. At 40-80 cm, ANC remained unchanged in acid-sensitive soils (base saturation ≤20%, pHCaCl2 ≤ 4.5) and decreased in better-buffered soils (base saturation >20%, pHCaCl2 > 4.5). In addition, the molar ratio of Bc to Altot either did not change or decreased. The results suggest a long-time lag between emission abatement and changes in soil solution acidity and underline the importance of long-term monitoring in evaluating ecosystem response to decreases in deposition.
Response of soil fertility to 25 years of experimental acidification in a temperate hardwood forest

Abstract:The effects of enhanced acid deposition from the atmosphere, and associated elevated inputs of N, are widely evident, especially for forests where excess N has led to a variety of deleterious effects. These include declines in biodiversity, a response that will likely require considerable time for recovery. The purpose of this study was to determine responses of plant nutrient availability in surface mineral soil to 25 yr of experimental acidification and N addition in a central Appalachian hardwood forest ecosystem. We hypothesized that chronic additions of (NH4 )2 SO4 will increase mineral N, decrease soil pH, P, and base cations, increase micronutrients (Mn2+ and Fe2+ ), and increase levels of Al3+ . Results supported these predictions, although Mn2+ did not vary significantly. Earlier work on these plots found no response of any of the extractable nutrients to 3 yr of treatment, yet after 25 yr, our results suggest that impacts are apparent in the top 5 cm of the A horizon. We surmise that impacts in these soils may have lagged behind the onset of acidification treatments or that several years of treatment were required to overcome preexisting differences in soil ions. Generally, current findings confirm that (NH4 )2 SO4 treatments have lowered the pH, enhanced levels of exchangeable Al3+ , and increased stream-water exports of NO3 - and base cations-a process that further acidifies soil. The combination of these changes in surface soils, with their high proportion of fine roots, may contribute to the reduced growth and competitiveness of some hardwood species at the acidified site.
Tree Response to Experimental Watershed Acidification

Abstract:Forest ecosystems in the Eastern USA are threatened by acid deposition rates that have increased dramatically since industrialization. We utilized two watersheds at the Fernow Experimental Forest in West Virginia to examine long-term effects of acidification on ecological processes. One watershed has been treated with ammonium sulfate (approximately twice the ambient deposition rate) since 1989 to simulate elevated acidic deposition, while the other served as a control. Prior to treatment, both watersheds were similar in age and species composition. Ten dominant overstory Prunus serotina and Liriodendron tulipifera trees were selected and cored from each watershed to measure bolewood concentrations of essential elements through time. In addition, changes in tree species basal area were analyzed utilizing 50 long-term growth plots. Results of this experiment show lower calcium and magnesium concentration and increased acidic cation concentration for both species in the treated watershed, indicating a negative treatment effect. Growth response, measured through relative growth rates of cored trees and changes in basal area from growth plots, was not as conclusive and appeared to differ by species. The resulting difference in species response indicates that acidification sensitivity is something that land managers should consider when managing forests affected by acidification.
The Long-Term Impact of Acid Deposition on the Aluminum Chemistry of an Acid Forest Soil

Abstract:The long-term (100 yr) impact of atmospheric deposition on the Al chemistry of an acid forest soil, has been evaluated using RESAM, a process-oriented soil acidification model. The model structure is based on the conceptual relationship between forest element cycling and soil acidification. The model simulates the major biogeochemical processes occurring in the forest canopy, litter layer and mineral horizons including canopy interactions, element cycling processes, nitrogen transformation processes, and geochemical weathering and exchange reactions. The driving variables of the model are the quantity and quality of atmospheric deposition. Hydrological data, such as infiltration, evapotranspiration, and soil moisture content per soil layer are derived from a hydrological submodel. Data for the model variables and parameters are derived from the literature, soil survey information, process research, and model calibration. Over the simulation period, the Al flux from the topsoil strongly decreases due to a decrease in the amount of amorphous Al hydroxides. However, the Al flux from the whole soil profile remains constant; the decrease in Al dissolution in the first soil layer is compensated by an increase in the underlying layers. As with the drainage fluxes, concentrations and adsorbed amounts of Al also decrease in the topsoil whereas the concentration and adsorbed amount of H increases. Sensitivity analysis shows that the changes in Al chemistry in the topsoil are strongly influenced by the parameters regulating nitrification and Al dissolution, because these processes mainly regulate H production and consumption, respectively. The dramatic changes in pH and Al chemistry predicted by the model may have serious ecological consequences.
The Influence of Tree Species on the Recovery of Forest Soils from Acidification in Lower Saxony, Germany

Abstract:Atmospheric acid deposition has increased sharply since the beginning of industrialization but has decreased considerably since the 1980s owing to clean-air policies. Soil acidification induced by an input of acidity has been demonstrated in numerous studies using repeated forest-soil inventories. So far, relatively few data have been sampled to analyze long-term soil trends and only a few studies show the recovery of forest soils from acidification, whereas the recovery of surface waters following declining acid deposition is a widespread phenomenon. To assess a possible recovery from acid deposition, soil resampling data from 21 forested permanent soil-monitoring sites in Lower Saxony (Germany) were evaluated. For most sites, at least three repetitions of inventories from a period of 30 to 50 years were available. Trend analyses of indicators for the acid-base status of unlimed forest soils using generalized additive mixed models (GAMM) show either a trend reversal or a stagnation of the acid-base status at a strong acidification level. The recovery, if indicated by an increase of soil pH and base saturation, of soils from plots with deciduous trees appears to have occurred faster than in coniferous forest stands. This observation may be attributed to a larger amount of temporarily stored sulfur in the soil because of the higher atmospheric input into coniferous forests. As indicators for the acid-base status still show considerable soil acidification, mitigation measures such as forest liming still appear to be necessary for accelerating the regeneration process.
Fifty years of reduction in sulphur deposition drives recovery in soil pH and plant communities

Abstract:Sulphur deposition through rainfall has led to species loss and ecosystem degradation globally, and across Europe huge reductions in sulphur emissions since the 1970s were expected to promote the recovery of acidified ecosystems. However, the rate and ecological impact of recovery from acidification in terrestrial ecosystems is still unclear as is the influence of management and climate, as to date there has been no long‐term spatially extensive evaluation of these changes. Here we present data from thousands of sites across Great Britain (pH range 3.3‐8.7) surveyed repeatedly from 1978‐2019 and assess change in soil pH and plant acidity preference (Ellenberg R) in response to atmospheric deposition of sulphur and nitrogen. We analyse change in grasslands managed for pasture, referred to as high‐intensity habitats, and compare to semi‐natural habitats comprising rough grassland, broadleaved woodland, bog and heathland, referred to as low‐intensity habitats. Soil pH increased from 1978 to 2007 but then decreased between 2007 and 2019, resulting in a net increase of ~0.2 pH units in low‐intensity habitats but no change in high‐intensity habitats. The community average Ellenberg R increased in semi‐natural habitats by ~0.2 units but remained stable in intensive grasslands. In semi‐natural habitats, but not intensive grasslands, these changes in plant community composition were associated with the soil pH changes which were in turn linked to decreasing sulphur deposition and differences in rainfall. Nitrogen deposition, which was relatively stable over the survey period, showed no additional effect upon soil acidity once sulphur deposition was accounted for. Synthesis: Our results provide conclusive evidence that reductions in acid emissions are stimulating the gradual recovery of chronically acidified terrestrial ecosystems at a whole‐country scale, while also suggesting this recovery is being compromised by changing climate and land management.

Revisiting four scientific debates in ocean acidification research

Abstract:Abstract. In recent years, ocean acidification has gained continuously increasing attention from scientists and a number of stakeholders and has raised serious concerns about its effects on marine organisms and ecosystems. With the increase in interest, funding resources, and the number of scientific investigations focusing on this environmental problem, increasing amounts of data and results have been produced, and a progressively growing and more rigorous understanding of this problem has begun to develop. Nevertheless, there are still a number of scientific debates, and in some cases misconceptions, that keep reoccurring at a number of forums in various contexts. In this article, we revisit four of these topics that we think require further thoughtful consideration including: (1) surface seawater CO2 chemistry in shallow water coastal areas, (2) experimental manipulation of marine systems using CO2 gas or by acid addition, (3) net versus gross calcification and dissolution, and (4) CaCO3 mineral dissolution and seawater buffering. As a summation of these topics, we emphasize that: (1) many coastal environments experience seawater pCO2 that is significantly higher than expected from equilibrium with the atmosphere and is strongly linked to biological processes; (2) addition of acid, base or CO2 gas to seawater can all be useful techniques to manipulate seawater chemistry in ocean acidification experiments; (3) estimates of calcification or CaCO3 dissolution based on present techniques are measuring the net of gross calcification and dissolution; and (4) dissolution of metastable carbonate mineral phases will not produce sufficient alkalinity to buffer the pH and carbonate saturation state of shallow water environments on timescales of decades to hundreds of years to the extent that any potential negative effects on marine calcifiers will be avoided.

Abstract:Recovery from anthropogenic acidification in streams and lakes is well documented across the northern hemisphere. In this study, we use 1996-2009 data from the four Swedish Integrated Monitoring catchments to evaluate how the declining sulfur deposition has affected sulfate, pH, acid neutralizing capacity, ionic strength, aluminum, and dissolved organic carbon in soil water, groundwater and runoff. Differences in recovery rates between catchments, between recharge and discharge areas and between soil water and groundwater are assessed. At the IM sites, atmospheric deposition is the main human impact. The chemical trends were weakly correlated to the sulfur deposition decline. Other factors, such as marine influence and catchment features, seem to be as important. Except for pH and DOC, soil water and groundwater showed similar trends. Discharge areas acted as buffers, dampening the trends in streamwater. Further monitoring and modeling of these hydraulically active sites should be encouraged.
Long-term Changes in Soil and Stream Chemistry across an Acid Deposition Gradient in the Northeastern United States.

Abstract:Declines in acidic deposition across Europe and North America have led to decreases in surface water acidity and signs of chemical recovery of soils from acidification. To better understand the link between recovery of soils and surface waters, chemical trends in precipitation, soils, and streamwater were investigated in three watersheds representing a depositional gradient from high to low across the northeastern United States. Significant declines in concentrations of H (ranging from -1.2 to -2.74 microequivalents [μeq] L yr), NO (ranging from -0.6 to -0.84 μeq L yr), and SO (ranging from -0.95 to -2.13 μeq L yr) were detected in precipitation in the three watersheds during the period 1999 to 2013. Soil chemistry in the A horizon of the watershed with the greatest decrease in deposition showed significant decreases in exchangeable Al and increases in exchangeable bases. Soil chemistry did not significantly improve during the study in the other watersheds, and base saturation in the Oa and upper B horizons significantly declined in the watershed with the smallest decrease in deposition. Streamwater SO concentrations significantly declined in all three streams (ranging from -2.01 to -2.87 μeq L yr) and acid neutralizing capacity increased (ranging from 1.38 to 1.60 μeq L yr) in the two streams with the greatest decreases in deposition. Recovery of soils has likely been limited by decades of acid deposition that have leached base cations from soils with base-poor parent material.

Abstract:Large-scale exposure of acid sulfate soils during a hydrological drought in the Lower Lakes of South Australia resulted in acidification of surface water in several locations. Our aim was to describe the techniques used to monitor, assess and manage these acidification events using a field and laboratory dataset (n = 1,208) of acidic to circum-neutral pH water samples. The median pH of the acidified (pH < 6.5) samples was 3.8. Significant (p < 0.05) increases in soluble metals (Al, Co, Mn, Ni and Zn above guidelines for ecosystem protection), SO4 (from pyrite oxidation), Si (from aluminosilicate dissolution) and Ca (from carbonate dissolution and limestone addition), were observed under the acidic conditions. The log of the soluble metal concentrations, acidity and SO4/Cl ratio increased linearly with pH. The pH, alkalinity and acidity measurements were used to inform aerial limestone dosing events to neutralise acidic water. Field measurements correlated strongly with laboratory measurements for pH, alkalinity and conductivity (r2 ≥ 0.97) but only moderately with acidity (r2 = 0.54), which could be due to difficulties in determining the indicator-based field titration endpoint. Laboratory measured acidity correlated well with calculated acidity (r2 = 0.87, acidity present as AlIII >> H+ ≈ MnII > FeII/III) but was about 20 % higher on average. Geochemical speciation calculations and XRD measurements indicated that solid phase minerals (schwertmannite and jarosite for Fe and jurbanite for Al) were likely controlling dissolved metal concentrations and influencing measured acidity between pH 2 and 5.

Abstract:Weak acidification can occur in freshwater ecosystems when free carbon dioxide (CO2) levels increase, which can happen for a variety of reasons. To define the state of knowledge for how weak acidification influences freshwater biota and ecosystems, a review of the primary literature was conducted. Despite few empirical studies focused on weak acidification in the primary literature (~100 studies), some themes have emerged from our literature review. Most studies focused on physiological responses at the organismal level, and fish were the most studied taxa. Animals exhibited reduced individual growth rates, and, in contrast, primary producers demonstrated increased individual and population growth rates. In animals, mortality, sub-lethal injuries, and changes to behaviours were also observed. Negative consequences to reproduction in macrophytes were found. Few studies have focused on population, community, or ecosystem levels, though broad scale studies suggest that weak acidification can limit species community diversity, specifically in invertebrates and fish. Moving forward, researchers need to continue to advance our understanding of the consequences of weak acidification for freshwater biota. Furthermore, priority should be placed on research that can evaluate the potential for weak acidification in freshwater to lead to changes in ecological regimes or economical outcomes, such as fisheries collapses.

Abstract:The effect of acidification on ecosystems is reviewed. About 30% of the world land area is acidified mostly by natural processes. Only a small part of it is acidified from pollution which leads to extensive forest and surface water deterioration in Europe and North America. The damage is especially visible in areas of poor soil quality. The acid deposition pattern is characterized, with a special emphasis on Poland. It was shown that strategies for mitigation of ecosystem acidification lead to a decrease of SO2 emissions due to the use of lower sulphur content fuels and application of desulphurisation methods. Also, a decrease in NOx emissions is observed due to use of catalysts and application of NOx removal technologies. However, since about 50% of NOx emission is from vehicles, this improvement is offset by a continuously increasing vehicle population. The application of liming, forest fertilisation and suitable land use for mitigation of ecosystem acidification is also reviewed.

Abstract:Cyanobacteria, as vital components of aquatic ecosystems, face increasing challenges due to acidification driven by various anthropogenic and natural factors. Understanding how cyanobacteria adapt and respond to acidification is crucial for predicting their ecological dynamics and potential impacts on ecosystem health. This comprehensive review synthesizes current knowledge on the acclimation mechanisms and responses of cyanobacteria to acidification stress. Detailly, ecological roles of cyanobacteria were firstly briefly concluded, followed by the effects of acidification on aquatic ecosystems and cyanobacteria. Then the review focuses on the physiological, biochemical, and molecular strategies employed by cyanobacteria to cope with acidification stress, highlighting key adaptive mechanisms and their ecological implications. Finally, a summary of strategies to enhance acid resistance in cyanobacteria and future directions was discussed. Utilizing omics data and machine learning technology to build a cyanobacterial acid regulatory network allows for predicting the impact of acidification on cyanobacteria and inferring its broader effects on ecosystems. Additionally, acquiring acid-tolerant chassis cells of cyanobacteria through innovative techniques facilitates the advancement of environmentally friendly production of acidic chemicals. By synthesizing empirical evidence and theoretical frameworks, this review aims to elucidate the complex interplay between cyanobacteria and acidification stressors, providing insights for future research directions and ecosystem management strategies.
Short-term acidification promotes diverse iron acquisition and conservation mechanisms in upwelling-associated phytoplankton

Abstract:Abstract Coastal upwelling regions are among the most productive marine ecosystems but may be threatened by amplified ocean acidification. Increased acidification is hypothesized to reduce iron bioavailability for phytoplankton thereby expanding iron limitation and impacting primary production. Here we show from community to molecular levels that phytoplankton in an upwelling region respond to short-term acidification exposure with iron uptake pathways and strategies that reduce cellular iron demand. A combined physiological and multi-omics approach was applied to trace metal clean incubations that introduced 1200 ppm CO 2 for up to four days . Although variable, molecular-level responses indicate a prioritization of iron uptake pathways that are less hindered by acidification and reductions in iron utilization. Growth, nutrient uptake, and community compositions remained largely unaffected suggesting that these mechanisms may confer short-term resistance to acidification; however, we speculate that cellular iron demand is only temporarily satisfied, and longer-term acidification exposure without increased iron inputs may result in increased iron stress.

Abstract:Manipulation experiments are being conducted in Norway to examine the effects of drastic changes in precipitation chemistry on soil and surface-water acidification. At a clean area in western Norway, two pristine catchments are being acidified by addition of H2SO4 and H2SO4+HNO3, respectively. At an acidified catchment in southernmost Norway, ambient acid precipitation is excluded by means of a roof and clean precipitation added beneath.

Abstract:Atmospheric acid deposition of sulfate and nitrate has declined markedly in the northeastern United States due to emissions controls. We investigated long‐term trends in soil water (1984–2011) and stream water (1982–2011) chemistry along an elevation gradient of a forested watershed to evaluate the progress of recovery of drainage waters from acidic deposition at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, USA. We found slowed losses of base cations from soil and decreased mobilization of dissolved inorganic aluminum. Stream water pH at the watershed outlet increased at a rate of 0.01 units yr−1, and the acid neutralizing capacity (ANC) gained 0.88 µeq L−1 yr−1. Dissolved organic carbon generally decreased in stream water and soil solutions, contrary to trends observed at many North American and European sites. We compared whole‐year hydrochemical trends with those during snowmelt, which is the highest‐flow and lowest ANC period of the year, indicative of episodic acidification. Stream water during snowmelt had long‐term trends of increasing ANC and pH at a rate very similar to the whole‐year record, with closely related steady decreases in sulfate. A more rapid decline in stream water nitrate during snowmelt compared with the whole‐year trend may be due, in part, to the marked decrease in atmospheric nitrate deposition during the last decade. The similarity between the whole‐year trends and those of the snowmelt period is an important finding that demonstrates a consistency between recovery from chronic acidification during base flow and abatement of snowmelt acidification.

Abstract:In this review article, anthropogenic activities that cause acidification of Earth’s air, waters, and soils are examined. Although there are many mechanisms of acidification, the focus is on the major ones, including emissions from combustion of fossil fuels and smelting of ores, mining of coal and metal ores, and application of nitrogen fertilizer to soils, by elucidating the underlying biogeochemical reactions as well as assessing the magnitude of the effects. These widespread activities have resulted in (1) increased CO2 concentration in the atmosphere that acidifies the oceans; (2) acidic atmospheric deposition that acidifies soils and bodies of freshwater; (3) acid mine drainage that acidifies bodies of freshwater and groundwaters; and (4) nitrification that acidifies soils. Although natural geochemical reactions of mineral weathering and ion exchange work to buffer acidification, the slow reaction rates or the limited abundance of reactant phases are overwhelmed by the onslaught of anthropogenic acid loading. Relatively recent modifications of resource extraction and usage in some regions of the world have begun to ameliorate local acidification, but expanding use of resources in other regions is causing environmental acidification in previously unnoticed places. World maps of coal consumption, Cu mining and smelting, and N fertilizer application are presented to demonstrate the complex spatial heterogeneity of resource consumption as well as the overlap in acidifying potential derived from distinctly different phenomena. Projected population increase by country over the next four decades indicates areas with the highest potential for acidification, so enabling anticipation and planning to offset or mitigate the deleterious environmental effects associated with these global shifts in the consumption of energy, mineral, and food resources.
