Abstract:Abstract By departure from the complexity of senses involved in our human condition, to the urban reality expressed in spatial and social events, the night time sensitivity of the urban realm is here investigated. This paper aims at proposing the consideration of additional five urban senses related to Light and Lighting in the outdoor urban public space, from a design perspective, trying to explore a problem-setting strategy and away from case-studies analysis, but future oriented. What responsibility will Light and Lighting have in the cities of the future? The future is hard to predict but urbanization is a global phenomena and the tendency is to be accelerated further. The way we will live in the cities of the future will also determine the pertinence of the word sustainability . By 2025, according to the UN Habitat publication Urban World: Ten Years into the millennium. (2010) , Asia alone could have ten or eleven conurbations of over twenty million people. Sense of Time A notion of synchronicity is in close relation to the Sense of Time. Life in cities is highly conditioned by time shortage and by the fact that time is money too. Either way, we find ourselves most of time Spending too much time and not being able to do enough Saving, and not that an Historicist approach gains terrain here, but what we envision for the future is influenced by our past and present experiences. I relate this sense to a “Notion of Temporality” and I suggest that we may consider these last three senses (Kinesthetic, Balance and Time) in the Urban realm as deeply connected to mobility and accessibility, so I choose the Sense of Direction to be further transported to our chapter of Discussion as representing a combination of body movement in space and time. Discussion Realizing that the night time city is another city, in this Discussion chapter there will be presented to debate the definitions of Light Pedestrian - to who direct the design effort – and presented five other Light Urban Senses - a proposal. The cities are a space for mixed use and diversity by excellence. The automobile is definitely not the enemy of public space but rather the right partner for liveliness of public space. Is just a matter of priorities and clear definition what transportation mean is hosting who at the same time and the same place.
