Abstract:Stone pavements are frequently overlooked as a heritage, yet their importance extends beyond their typical function of supporting and keeping our pathways clean. Both the stones themselves and the craftsmanship employed in shaping them carry a significant importance that should be preserved. By safeguarding these memories, we can enhance the historical value of paving stones in urban and cultural settings, while also acknowledging their geological relevance. The present paper focus on a specific set of lithotypes traditionally used as paving stones in the majority of palaces and churches in Lisbon (Portugal), and its outskirts. Examples such as the Monastery of Saint Vincent Outside the Walls, the National Convent and Palace of Mafra, and the Estrela Basilic that were built across different periods (from the sixteenth century to the eighteenth century) are presented. Mostly sedimentary (one recrystallized by contact metamorphism), these lithotypes are all local and part of the Upper Jurassic (Oxfordian) to the Upper Cretaceous (Cenomanian) stratigraphical sequence outcropping around Lisbon. They were used on a variety of geometric ornamental stone floors on major palaces and churches built in this capital and its surroundings, including overseas territories. From the Upper Jurassic Blue Sintra (a carbonate hornfels), the Lower Cretaceous Black Mem Martins (organic matter rich limestone) to the Upper Cretaceous bright red, Lioz (Liós), Yellow Negrais and Red Negrais, these stones were favored due to their early availability as well as their physical and mechanical properties and their aesthetic value. Although there are several existing works addressing this topic, only a few of them compile this information specifically for non-Portuguese speakers. Moreover, this paper highlights the significance of historical sites adorned with stone pavements as exceptional venues for geoeducation, serving as ex situ geosites and showcasing valuable geoheritage. The recognition of the distinctive lithofacies, whether individually or in combination, serves as evidence of their origin and skilled craftsmanship, further attesting to their uniqueness and importance. Thus, the objective of this paper is to explore the utilization of a limited selection of a set of decorative stones in the construction of various historical floors found in palaces and churches from Lisbon to Mafra. It aims to emphasize the significance of these stones as both geological and cultural inheritances.
