Abstract:In recent years, there have been increasing accounts of illegal substance abuse among university students and professional groups in Malaysia. This study looks at university students' perceptions about this phenomenon. Students from Malaysian universities were asked for their impressions about drug availability and abuse, as well as factors contributing to drug abuse and relapse. The questionnaire also inquired into their knowledge and views regarding government versus private rehabilitation centers, as well as their exposure to, and views about, school-based drug-prevention education. Participants were 460 university students from five Malaysian states: Penang, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Sabah, and Sarawak. Results showed gender differences in perceptions of relapse prevention strategies, as well as factors leading to drug abuse and relapse. Students also believed that drug education would be more effective if initiated between the ages of 11 and 12 years, which is slightly older than the common age of first exposure, and provided suggestions for improving existing programs. Implications of student perceptions for the improvement of current interventions and educational programs are discussed.

Abstract:Abstract Drug prevention education programs have been implemented in primary and secondary schools in Malaysia. This study aimed to investigate the existing drug prevention education programs in primary schools in high-risk areas of Perak, Malaysia and to identify the challenges faced by primary school teachers to implement these programs. The methods used in this study was a qualitative case study design by using interviews for data collection. Seven participants, including primary school teachers, a Ministry of Education Malaysia officer, a National Anti-Drug Agency (NADA) Perak officer, and a State of Education Department officer, were involved as study samples. The results of the study showed that teachers still face problems delivering drug messages in the teaching-learning process because they do not have enough learning materials or knowledge. Teachers’ challenges arise not only from the school or educational policy but also from parents` involvement. It can be concluded that the primary school teachers in Malaysia still face challenges related to their skills, community supports, and government policies in drug prevention education programs. It is expected the study can be used by the stakeholders when planning and evaluating drug preventive in Malaysian primary schools especially in selected hot spot areas. Keywords: challenges, drug prevention, high-risk areas, primary school teachers. Abstrak Program pendidikan pencegahan narkoba telah dilaksanakan di sekolah dasar dan menengah di Malaysia. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki program pendidikan pencegahan narkoba yang ada di sekolah dasar di daerah berisiko tinggi Perak, Malaysia dan untuk mengidentifikasi tantangan yang dihadapi oleh guru sekolah dasar untuk melaksanakan program ini. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah kualitatif dengan desain studi kasus dengan menggunakan wawancara untuk pengumpulan data. Tujuh peserta, termasuk guru sekolah dasar, petugas Kementerian Pendidikan Malaysia, petugas Badan Anti Narkoba Nasional (NADA) Perak, dan petugas Departemen Pendidikan Negara Bagian, dilibatkan sebagai sampel penelitian. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa guru masih menghadapi kendala penyampaian pesan narkoba dalam proses belajar mengajar karena tidak memiliki bahan ajar atau pengetahuan yang cukup. Tantangan guru muncul tidak hanya dari sekolah atau kebijakan pendidikan, tetapi juga dari keterlibatan orang tua. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa guru sekolah dasar di Malaysia masih menghadapi tantangan terkait keterampilan mereka, dukungan masyarakat, dan kebijakan pemerintah dalam program pendidikan pencegahan narkoba. Diharapkan penelitian ini dapat digunakan oleh para pemangku kepentingan ketika merencanakan dan mengevaluasi program pencegahan narkoba di sekolah dasar Malaysia, khususnya di daerah yang terpilih. Abstract:Drug abuse can be happened to anybody. Drug abuse can cause systematic destruction to the sustainability of a state. It is especially important that children and teenager should be avoided from using drugs. There are many kinds of approaches that can be done. One among them was an early education against drug abuse. This research aimed to elaborate the importance of early child drug education and try to provide solutions on how the education must be conducted, based on Indonesian laws and regulations. Data used in this research were of secondary data, which mainly consisted of primary legal sources and secondary legal sources. Data were obtained through literature review using “google” search machine. Data were analysed using deductive “legal reasoning” method, with qualitative approach. Research found that in many jurisdictions, children have been introduced, exposed, and misuse several kinds of drugs. To avoid it, state shall initiate and provide support through education. It may involve formal or informal education institutions. Research also found that early drugs education for children would be good to provide early knowledge to the children so that they can avoid misusing drugs. However, it must be taught by competent person to avoid mis-reception. Indonesia shall has enough sources to implement it. Under current prevailing legislations, Indonesia shall have enough support to start the education. Though Indonesia has sufficient laws and regulations, however Indonesia still needs good system, competent human resources, technologies, facilities, infrastructure, and enough financing to implement the laws and regulations. Inter-departmental cooperation must be set up to support the implementation.
Peer education as a means of drug prevention and education among young people: an evaluation

Abstract:Peer education has become increasingly popular in Britain as a method of drug education and prevention for young people. Few initiatives nave undergone formal evaluation and the extent to which such programmes influence the drug use of young people is consequently unknown. The results from a process evaluation of a community based peer intervention are presented here. Research and evaluation took place between April 1995 and June 1996. Findings show that the intervention was successful in that drug information was disseminated to a wide cross-section of the target population including those who would Otherwise not have access to such information, for example parents and teachers. The evaluation found a considerable number of contacts made by the peer educators were through speaking to friends and distributing drug information leaflets. While it appears that contacts of this nature achieve increased levels of knowledge about drugs, it remains unclear how effective the intervention was in influencing the drug-using behaviour of young people currently involved in drug use. Until impact and outcome evaluations of peer intervention programmes have been completed, there is no clear evidence that peer education is a superior method of drug education and prevention in comparison to other approaches.

The effect of electronic and printed module about drug abuse prevention on teachers' beliefs in Indonesia

Abstract:Background: Drug abuse is a serious global health problem. Globally, 269 million people or 5.3 percent of the population aged 15‒64 years used drugs in 2018. Evidence shows that most drug addicts start using drugs in adolescence (<15-years-old). Adolescents need role models who are able to guide them; teachers have important roles as they are primary role models for students. Therefore, teachers should have positive beliefs to guide students effectively, i.e. they should have good awareness about the threat of drug abuse and high confidence to implement required prevention. This research developed an alternative electronic delivery method of learning material to empower teachers in preventing drug abuse. This study aimed to compare the effect of the electronic and a printed teaching module on teachers' beliefs about drug abuse prevention. Methods: 260 junior high school teachers were selected randomly. These teachers were split into two groups. Before intervention, a questionnaire was completed by both groups. The teachers then completed the learning material: electronic module in the first group and printed module in the second group. One month later, data was collected from both groups using the same questionnaire to assess the beliefs of the teachers Results: There was significant positive effect on teachers' beliefs, both in electronic module and printed module groups. All categories of beliefs at one month after intervention were significantly higher than those at baseline (P<0.001). Based on between group comparison analysis of mean changes, perceived susceptibility in electronic module group was significantly higher than printed module group (P<0.001), while perceived severity, benefits, barriers and efficacy were not significantly different (P>0.05). Conclusions: Electronic and printed module intervention significantly increased teachers' beliefs in drug abuse prevention. The printed module was still effective to be used as learning media, while the electronic module was an alternative with some advantages.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: There is increasing evidence for declining the onset age of drug abuse worldwide. This study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of four educational methods including lecture, presentation of poster and leaflet, presentation of video clip, and group/class discussion for life skills training and changing in knowledge and attitude of adolescents toward drug abuse.MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a pretest-posttest design, a sample of 897 girl and boy high school students from the first grade (14-15 years old) were involved in this cross-sectional study conducted in Isfahan, Iran. After collection of pretest questionnaires, each educational method was implemented separately for one class in one session (3 h) in each high school, and evaluation was carried out immediately after intervention through posttest questionnaires by the same students.RESULTS: According to paired t-test, the video clip- and lecture-based methods were significantly efficient in changing the attitudes toward drug abuse in boy and girl students, respectively. Analysis of covariance showed significant differences between girls and boys in pretest-posttest attitude scores using group discussion-based and video clip-based methods.CONCLUSION: Life skills training program through lecture-based and video clip-based educational methods was considerably effective in changing the high school students' attitude toward drug abuse and addiction.

Abstract:Purpose Research suggests that student drug use is substantially higher than that of the general population and while the UK Government’s current Drug Strategy emphasises the importance of PSHE in preventing young people from becoming drug users, there is a lack of research investigating the longer-term effectiveness of drug prevention education, and students’ views using qualitative methods. The purpose of this paper is to gain a holistic understanding into university students’ lived experiences of recreational class A drug taking and the drug education taught in English secondary schools. Design/methodology/approach Five interviews with university students were undertaken and thematically analysed using an ideographic case study approach alongside a qualitative content analysis of publicly available drug education resources and policy documents. Findings The normalisation of drug taking at university and social micro-pressures to assimilate group norms were key contributing factors to participants’ drug use. While the content of drug education in PSHE is grounded in theory, its implementation is not. Originality/value This study extends upon existing theories of normalisation of drug use at university through the concept of micro-pressures to offer an explanation of the process by which students assimilate group norms through the implicit threat of not fitting in.

Abstract:Objective To explore the impact of drugs prevention education on the knowledge and attitudes of junior high-school students.Methods 214 junior high-school students were taken out by random cluster sample.Students from Liquan County of Shanxi Province participated in this program.The students were received health education for 3 month.Knowledge and attitudes of the students were surveyed by self-administered questionnaire anonymously before and after education.Results Average score of drugs prevention education knowledge of the students was improved significantly after education,the differences were significance.Average score was 6.73±3.15 before education and(10.04±)2.45 after education.The rate of correct attitudes about drugs was increased after health education.Conclusion It is not only necessary but also feasible and effective to develop health education on drugs prevention among junior high-school students.It is necessary to take health education among junior high-school students in China.Health education is helpful to students building up positive attitudes and belief about drugs abuse.

Abstract:Aim: This pilot study investigated what alcohol prevention benefits could be achieved by a harm reduction focused school drug education intervention that addressed all drug use, both licit and illicit. Method: The study population comprised a cohort of 225 students in three intervention secondary schools and 93 students in a matched control school in Victoria, Australia. A classroom drug education programme, derived from evidence of effective practice and designed to reduce alcohol and other drug harm, was provided to the intervention students during years eight (13–14 year olds) and nine (14–15 year olds) by teachers trained in its delivery. The control students received the drug education programme normally provided by their school. Findings: The students, who received the intervention, were more knowledgeable about drug use issues, communicated more with their parents about alcohol, drank less, got drunk less, and experienced fewer alcohol related harms. They also remembered receiving more alcohol lessons. They were, however, no less likely to have tried alcohol. Conclusions: The findings are consistent with other studies that have demonstrated school alcohol education that focuses on harm reduction can be effective in reducing consumption, risk and harm. In this study, this was achieved even though the students were not persuaded against taking up drinking, and the intervention did not focus solely on alcohol. These findings have implications for both the goals and coverage of future school drug education programmes.

Abstract:Based on the evaluation findings of the B.E.S.T. Teen Program which aimed at promoting behavioral, emotional, social, and thinking competencies in primary school students, it is argued in this paper that promotion of psychosocial competence to prevent addiction in primary school students is a promising strategy. A total of 382 Primary 5 (Grade 5) and 297 Primary 6 (Grade 6) students from five primary schools in Hong Kong participated in the program. Different evaluation strategies were adopted to evaluate the program. First, objective outcome evaluation adopting a non-equivalent group pretest–posttest experimental-control group design was conducted to examine change in the students. Second, to gauge students’ perceptions of the program, subjective outcome evaluation was conducted. The evaluation findings basically converged to tentatively suggest that young adolescents benefited from participating in the program. Implications on the development, implementation, and evaluation of addiction prevention programs for teenagers are discussed.

Abstract:Background: A school is a learning environment that contributes to the construction of personal values, beliefs, habits and lifestyles, provide convenient settings for the implementation of drug use prevention programs targeting adolescents, who are the population group at highest risk of initiating drug use. The objective of the present study was to investigate the prevalence of factors associated with implementing drug use prevention programs in Brazilian public and private middle and high urban schools. Methods: The present population-based cross-sectional survey was conducted with a probability sample of 1151 school administrators stratified by the 5 Brazilian administrative divisions, in 2014. A close-ended, self-reported online questionnaire was used. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors associated with implementing drug use prevention programs in schools. Results: A total of 51.1% of the schools had adopted drug use prevention programs. The factors associated with program implementation were as follows: belonging to the public school network; having a library; development of activities targeting sexuality; development of "Health at School Program" activities; offering extracurricular activities; and having an administrator that participated in training courses on drugs. Conclusions: The adoption of drug use prevention practices in Brazilian schools may be expanded with greater orchestration of schools through specialized training of administrators and teachers, expansion of the School Health Program and concomitant development of the schools' structural and curricular attributes.
A mixed methods investigation of implementation determinants for a school-based universal prevention intervention

Abstract:Background: Effective implementation of evidence-based prevention interventions in schools is vital to reducing the burden of drug use and its consequences. Universal prevention interventions often fail to achieve desired public health outcomes due to poor implementation. One central reason for suboptimal implementation is the limited fit between the intervention and the setting. Research is needed to increase our understanding of how intervention characteristics and context influence intervention implementation in schools to design implementation strategies that will address barriers and improve public health impact. Methods: Using a convergent mixed methods design we examined qualitative and quantitative data on implementation determinants for an evidence-based health curriculum, the Michigan Model for HealthTM (MMH) from the perspective of health teachers delivering the curriculum in high schools across the state. We examined data strands independently and integrated them by investigating data alignment, expansion, and divergence. Results: We identified three mixed methods domains: (1) Acceptability, (2) intervention-context fit, and (3) adaptability. We found alignment across data strands as teachers reporting low acceptability also reported low fidelity. The fit between student needs and the curriculum predicted fidelity (expansion). Teachers mentioned instances of poor intervention-context fit (discordance), including when meeting the needs of trauma-exposed youth and keeping updated on youth drug use trends. Teachers reported high adaptability (concordance) but also instances when adaptation was challenging (discordance). Conclusions: This investigation advances implementation research by deepening our understanding of implementation determinants for an evidence-based universal prevention intervention in schools. This will support designing effective implementation strategies to address barriers and advance the public health impact of interventions that address important risk and protective factors for all youth. Plain language summary: (1) What is Already Known About the Topic? While many evidence-based interventions (EBIs) exist to address key health issues among youth including substance use and mental health, few of these interventions are effectively implemented in community settings, such as schools. Notable multilevel barriers exist to implement universal prevention in schools. Researchers identify that misalignment between the intervention and the context is a key reason why many implementation efforts do not achieve desired outcomes. (2) What Does This Paper Add? This paper combines the strengths of qualitative and quantitative research methods to identify and understand challenges to intervention-context fit for a comprehensive health curriculum, the Michigan Model for HealthTM (MMH) which is widely adopted throughout Michigan, from the perspective of end users. This paper also utilizes the consolidated framework for implementation research and implementation outcomes framework to guide our understanding of implementing complex interventions and key barriers to implementation in schools. This research provides a foundation to design effective strategies that will balance curriculum fidelity and adaptation to achieve public health objectives. (3) What are the Implications for Practice, Research, or Policy? We need implementation strategies that guide flexibility and fidelity in EBI delivery in schools. While overall teachers felt the curriculum was adaptable and met student needs, they also mentioned specific instances when they would benefit from additional implementation support, such as making adaptations to meet the needs of trauma-exposed youth and keeping up-to-date with emerging drugs. Implementation strategies designed to address these challenges can improve fidelity and ultimately student well-being.

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the effects of health education on abuse and HIV/AIDS by peer among secondary school students, and to provide evidence for promoting health education.Methods Freshmen in Chongqing Medical University were taken as peer facilitators, who implemented 8 class hours' health education on abuse and HIV/AIDS prevention. Then evaluated the effects. Results The correct answer rate of Addiction may occur if people attempt abusive substance improved from 77.92% to 85.91%. The correct answer rate of People can infected HIV if they use the same closestool with AIDS/HIV patients increased to 60.54%.After the intervention, the number of smoking or drinking students decreased from 141 and 286 to 50 and 134 respectively.Conclusion After the intervention, knowledge on abuse and AIDS/HIV transmission is improved. The number of smoking or drinking students decreased apparently. School based peer education is a very efficient form of health education.

Abstract:Background: Tuberculosis (TB) is contagious and the transmission risk is high in congregate settings like school. Incidence of TB among adolescents is significantly high hence an education programme was developed to improve knowledge, attitude, practice and stigma (KAPS) among them. Methods: This school-based, non-randomised controlled study was conducted among secondary school students with a total of 236 respondents. The KAPS score were assessed before and 1 month after using self-administered validated KAPS questionnaire on TB. Analysis was done using repeated measures ANOVA. Results: The mean percentage score (SD) for baseline knowledge, attitude, practice and stigma score for the respondents were 54.0 (4.48), 65.6 (1.74), 70.0 (1.43) and 66.0 (6.88), respectively. There was a significant difference (P < 0.001) in the knowledge and stigma score for intervention group compared to control group, adjusted for gender, ethnicity and smoking status 4 weeks post-TB educational programme. However, with regards to attitude and practice score, there was no significant difference (P = 0.210 and P = 0.243, respectively). Conclusion: TB education programme was effective in improving knowledge and stigma related to TB. This health education programme can be used as one of the strategies for the prevention and control of TB in schools.

Abstract:Self-medication behaviors of the society kept increasing as years passed, including for the residents of Desa Pengalangan, Kecamatan Menganti, Kabupaten Gresik. Over-the-counter medicines, the ones that can be obtained without a prescription, have been a prior solution to relieve the symptoms of various diseases. Unfortunately, the consumption of these medicines is not accompanied by proficient knowledge of how to manage medicines properly. Consequently, the health of the community and environment are negatively affected. Therefore, it is considered crucial to educate society as a form of approach made for promoting public health and preventing the irrational usage of medicines. Socialization of the ‘DAGUSIBU' (dapatkan, gunakan, simpan, dan buang) [eng: get, use, store, and dispose] of medicines through a session of interactive mini-lecture and simulation, has been chosen to be the proper modality to deliver such information about managing medicines. About 21 health cadres of Desa Pengalangan are involved in this program, fulfilling the pretests and post-tests as instruments to determine the level of knowledge of the society about medicines. Based on the result of this program, it is noted that an average of 80.9% participants' level of knowledge increases after socialization. Highest increase in the level of knowledge is reported in the topics ‘Golongan obat' [eng: drug's classes] (85,7%) and ‘DAGUSIBU obat' (85,7%), while the topic ‘Penggunaan antibiotik' [eng: antibiotic usage] (71,4%) becomes the topic with the least increase in the level of knowledge. Though these findings seem in line with the previous studies, innovations are required to optimize the increase of society's level of knowledge in managing medicines.

Abstract:Children subjected to suspensions and expulsions from schools are often more susceptible to truancy and anti-social behaviour. Therefore, the objectives of this paper are (a) to examine the adequacy of the existing legal framework in providing effective crime prevention measures in schools and whether the laws are meeting the international legal framework; and (b) to propose viable crime prevention measures that help address the disciplinary problems in schools. A qualitative study is undertaken to meet these objectives, and the findings from this study can help schools develop more holistic measures in addressing disciplinary cases of children in schools.
