Abstract:China has been continuously implementing the open-door policy for past 15years ever since it joined the World Trade Organization, which escalated international trade and demand for shipping. Compared with the other major importing countries in the world, China's importing tariff is relatively low. Under the Belt and Road initiatives, more Free Trade Agreements to be concluded and more Free Trade Zones to be established, it is expected that the effective import tariff rate may continue to decrease in the future. This study analyses the impact of further reduction in Chinese import tariff rate on major economic indicators using a computable general equilibrium (CGE) model and based on the Chinese macro-economic data of 2012. The model results show that, with a balanced international payment, such a reduction can increase GDP, resident consumption, both imports and exports, and reduce GDP price, trade surplus, and government revenue. The results ease the concern that further import tariff reduction may harm the domestic production. Rather, it points out that there are still rooms to improve national economy and increase the consumer utility by trade liberation.

Abstract:China accounted for 14.4% of the global exports of goods, ranking first in 2022, followed by the United States at 8.3%. As the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development commented, China has become a global trade titan, and its meteoric rise as perhaps one of the best stories of economic development has been both admired and questioned. This article discusses the reasons behind China becoming a global trade titan from the perspective of transport logistics by applying statistical analysis and case studies. The results show that the meteoric rise of China's trade is inseparable from China's development in transport logistics, especially investments in maritime transport construction and China Railway Express, which hugely promote the interconnectivity of transport infrastructure and reduce transportation duration and waiting time, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, the imbalance of types of imports and exports in trade and the differences in infrastructure standards pose some problems. The research manages to give policy implications based on the existing problems of the current trade logistics system through case studies on Sino-US, Sino-EU and Sino-ASEAN trade relations and transport facilitation issues.

Abstract:We study unanticipated tariffs in a setting with firm-to-firm supply relationships. Firms conduct costly searches and negotiate with potential suppliers that pass a reservation level of match productivity. Global supply chains form in anticipation of free trade. Then, the home government surprises with an input tariff. This can lead to renegotiation with initial suppliers or search for replacements. Calibrating the model’s parameters to match initial import shares and the estimated responses to the US tariffs imposed on China, we find an overall welfare loss of 0.12 percent of GDP, with substantial contributions from changes in input sourcing and search costs. The Impact of Tariff Trade Barriers on the Operating Performance of U.S. Firms: The Role of Supply Structure and Complexity

Abstract:Multinational corporations (MNCs) have benefited tremendously from free trade in the past few decades in the form of cost reductions, resource advantages, and market expansion. However, the dynamism of international relations and a global recession have rekindled the debate over frictionless trade. In this study, we examine how trade friction, created by tariff trade barriers, affects the operational performance of domestic firms. We also investigate how different supply chain characteristics and strategies can moderate the impact of such trade friction. Motivated by the 2018 U.S.-China trade war, we conducted a difference-in-difference analysis to examine the impact of trade tariffs on various firm performance indicators of U.S. firms. We find that U.S. firms with direct supply chain partners (i.e., first-tier suppliers) in China have worse performance in terms of inventory (days of supply) and profitability (ROA). We further show that the negative impact on firms’ profitability is more severe when firms have a lower degree of vertical integration and when firms have a higher degree of horizonal, spatial, and cooperative supply base complexity. We discuss the implications for international operations management, supply chain networks, and supply risk management, and provide suggestions to supply chain practitioners and trade policy makers.

Abstract:In the trade environment of a globalized economy, tariffs play a crucial role in transnational supply chains. At the same time, the power structure of the supply chain also plays an important role in the decision making and income distribution of a transnational supply chain. Therefore, we construct game-theoretic models to analyze the impacts of tariffs and power structures on the decision making and revenue distribution of transnational supply chains. First, we consider a bilateral monopoly model consisting of a Chinese manufacturer and a U.S. retailer and analyze the effects of tariffs and power structures on decision making and revenue distributions in this supply chain. Then, we extend the model to a duopoly competition model consisting of two Chinese manufacturers and one American retailer, further analyzing the roles of tariffs and power structures. The results indicate that in the bilateral monopoly model, the impact of tariffs on the manufacturer's profits is always greater than on the retailer's profits under a manufacturer-led circumstance. However, in a competitive model, when the market size is large, the impact of tariffs on the manufacturer's profits exceeds that of the retailer's profits; conversely, when the market size is smaller, the impact of tariffs on the retailer's profits is greater than on the manufacturer's profits. Furthermore, we find that in the duopoly competition model, under the manufacturer-led circumstance, both the manufacturer and the retailer earn the highest profits.

Abstract:Countries’ economic policies, such as tariff barriers, have a profound impact on the global economy and international trade. The imposition of tariffs seriously disturbs the global trade and supply chain operations. This paper studies a supply chain composed of an overseas manufacturer, a domestic supplier and a third-party integrated international logistics service provider. A three-level decentralized leader-follower decision-making model and its variant--leader-follower alliance decision-making models are established, and the influences of revenue sharing and cost sharing on the three-level decentralized decision-making are analyzed. The results show that it is difficult for the supply chain to achieve coordination when the transportation and insurance costs are considered in the tariff cost. The increase of tariff rates will reduce the profits of all parties and the overall profit of the supply chain, and weaken the dominant position of the supplier in the supply chain. Revenue sharing can improve the supply chain performance; the performance of the whole supply chain cannot be improved or may even deteriorate by sharing the transportation cost alone. The study can provide practitioners with implications for how to carry effective cooperation and coordination in the supply chain and how to effectively reduce the influence of tariffs in the global trade system.

Abstract:This paper investigates the effect of carbon tariffs on global emission control. We propose a global supply chain model consisting of a retailer in an emission-regulated country and supplier in a non-emission-regulated country. The equilibrium solutions are obtained, and the effects of a carbon tariff on global emission control are studied. Through analytical study and numerical study, we find that a carbon tariff does not necessarily reduce global emissions under certain circumstances. The paper discusses insights and the carbon tariff policy implications from this finding.

Abstract:In the context of globalization, cross-border transactions are growing. Trade policies essentially strike the global supply chain networks. They not only change product flows but may also disrupt some chains. To reveal how trade policies, including tariffs, quotas, and subsidies, affect the global supply chain equilibrium, this study first decomposes the supply chain network into several product-market chains (PM chains) according to the product flows and the directed market. Second, to characterize the inter-chain competition under the Cournot-Nash competition, we establish an optimization model for each PM chain and provide the equilibrium conditions by using variational inequality theory. Third, we propose the qualitative properties of the equilibrium and solve the model using the Euler algorithm. Finally, to analyze the influence of different trade policies imposed at different stages, we conduct several numerical examples based on a network that is close to reality. We figure out the threshold when one chain is disrupted by the trade policy. PM chain disruption reconstructs the network and generates a new equilibrium. It explains the appearance of inflection points when analyzing the policies’ effects. Here we summarize the major impacts of trade policies before network reconstruction. All three trade policies imposed on the supply side increase the competitive advantage of domestic raw material suppliers, but they hurt domestic final product producers in the studied network. On the other hand, these trade policies imposed on the demand side benefit the domestic final product producer while hurting the foreign final product producer. The effects of tariff/quota and subsidy imposed on the demand side have the opposite effects on raw material suppliers: the tariff/quota decreases while the subsidy increases the output of the raw material suppliers. We consider three extensions with the adjusted network structures and partially substitutable products to demonstrate the wide applicability of the proposed approach. This work contributes to the literature by providing a framework of modeling to investigate inter-chain competition in a global supply network in the presence of trade policies.

Abstract:Based on the geopolitical perspective, the study analyzes the interaction between global trade policies and supply chain strategies, and constructs a theoretical model to explore how the tariff structure of final products is shaped by value-added content and the role of the most-favored-nation (MFN) rule and the principle of reciprocal trade in it. The findings suggest that geopolitical factors have a significant impact on international trade strategies and supply chain configurations. This theoretical framework indicates the importance for policymakers to consider geopolitical complexity in maintaining the global trade order and supply chain resilience, and promotes the construction of solid and adaptable international trade and supply chain management strategies.

Abstract:Abstract Although Chinese exports to the United States hit an all-time high in 2022, it would be incorrect to conclude that the U.S.–China trade war had no effects on trade. By exploiting fine product-level information on trade war tariffs, this paper demonstrates how the trade war diminished China's exports to the United States in tariff-impeded products, while expanding opportunities for exports from other countries in a fashion that had some systematic characteristics. First, the impact of the trade war tariffs was not immediate, as trade responses took place with a lag. Second, the responses to trade-war tariffs were heterogenous across countries and regions, with finer distinctions by product categories. Finally, trade that could be viewed as highly tied to global value chains (GVCs), such as trade in information and communication technology products, exhibited stronger reactions to the imposition of trade-war tariffs. These responses, and their implications for the organization of global supply chains, are discussed considering current trade concerns.

Abstract:Given the cross-border e-commerce import tariff and random demands, this study establishes a pricing decision model for cross-border e-commerce dual-channel supply chain, which is composed of domestic manufacturers and overseas retailers, so as to analyze the effects of import tariff and random demand on the pricing, demand and profit of cross-border e-commerce. According to the research, import tariffs have a positive correlation with retailers’ retail prices and a negative correlation with manufacturers’ direct prices, wholesale prices, demand and profit from direct channels, and profit from retail channels. The export tax rebate policy will lessen the negative effects of import tariffs and maximize the best choices made by manufacturers and retailers.

Abstract:The past decade has seen significant pressure to return manufacturing to developed countries. Such movements call for import tariffs to be raised and consumers' valuation of products made from locally sourced components increased. These factors are believed to stimulate firms operating in a single market to source components locally. However, it is not clear that they are equally effective for multinational firms that produce and sell products in multiple markets. To enrich the understanding of this issue, we build a game‐theoretical model to analyze the sourcing decisions of a global manufacturer that maintains production sites and sells products in both domestic and foreign markets in a competitive environment. The firm can choose either to source components from suppliers located in the same markets as the manufacturing sites to gain tariff savings and a price premium from consumers' higher valuation, or to source all components from a single foreign supplier to obtain a lower sourcing cost. We find that the structure of the global supply chain plays a critical role in the firm's sourcing strategy. Consumers' higher valuation of locally manufactured goods always promotes local sourcing. Raising tariffs, however, might backfire and discourage local sourcing because of the firm's global supply chain structure and the foreign supplier's strategic response to higher tariffs. Finally, local sourcing may reduce the consumer surplus even though consumers place a higher value on locally manufactured goods. This paper sheds light on recent movements to return manufacturing to developed countries and demonstrates the importance of taking the manufacturer's global supply chain structure and vertical interaction with suppliers into account. The Value of Connectivity: Evolution of Global Shipping Services Networks and the Dynamics of Global Value Chains

Abstract:With the rapid development of economic globalization, international shipping is playing a more critical role in global economic activities. The original port facilities and service capacity are difficult to adapt to the new situation of international shipping development. How to speed up the construction of interconnected global shipping service network has become an important global issue. Based on the data of shipping services networks and the global value chain of major economies, this paper discusses the impact of global shipping services networks on the dynamics of global value chain of an economy. The empirical result shows that the improving global shipping services network can help to significantly promote the labor division of global value chain. The sub sample test shows that the promoting effect is more significant in the samples of developed economies compared with developing economies. The global shipping services networks can promote the upgrading of global value chain by the channels increasing human capital accumulation and enhancing innovation ability. It is necessary to expand maritime channel, improve inter-modal channel, strengthen shipping service cooperation mechanism between different ports, and build up interconnected and efficient international shipping service networks.

Abstract:This article provides an in-depth analysis of the key role of global supply chain stability in the international trade economy and the core role of efficient risk management in this process. Driven by the wave of globalization, supply chains have become a key link connecting the economies of various countries. This article provides a comprehensive analysis of the current status of global supply chains and an in-depth exploration of the many factors affecting supply chain stability, including supplier reliability, logistics system efficiency, demand forecast accuracy, and inventory management effectiveness. It further delves into many aspects of supply chain risk management, including risk identification, assessment, mitigation and monitoring. Analyze and formulate contingency plans for emergencies as well as regular monitoring and evaluation strategies and measures to improve the effectiveness and value of risk management. Finally, this study emphasizes the importance of supply chain stability and efficient risk management in the global foreign trade economic system, and provides suggestions for future research directions and possible improvement strategies. This research has far-reaching significance for enhancing the transparency, resilience and sustainability of global supply chains, and is crucial to the stable development of the global economy.

The Rise of China and Change of the Global Trade Network During 1980-2018

Abstract:: With the development of the network analysis methods, studying global trade network by community detection and social network analysis (SNA) has become the frontiers in trade-related fields. However, most of the present research was of short temporal scale. Long-term studies are needed particularly given the growing uncertainties in today's world economy. Under the implementation of the Belt and Road initiative, analyzing the dynamics of the world politics and economy after the 1980s as well as the long- term shifts of the role of countries are of great significance for revealing the evolution of global trade network and thus contributing to the improvement of the initiative. Based on the Direction of Trade Statistics (DOTS) database by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), this article summarized three main stages in the global trade history after 1980 and illustrated and analyzed the change of the global trade network. The study found that: 1) The changes of world politics and economy and the improvement of technologies greatly influenced the global trade. The transformation from Fordism to Post- Fordism, the extension of neoliberalism, the development of digital technology, and the rise of developing countries represented by China have profoundly reshaped global trade. 2) The Top 1 network indicates that the change of global trade is relatively stable despite some shifts. In the European part of the global trade network, German bloc, French bloc, and Russian bloc are somewhat steady, while the United Kingdom bloc and Italian bloc have declined. In the Asia-Pacific part, the United States always played the leading role, the Australian bloc remained unchanged, but the Japanese bloc experienced a recession. 3) The rise of developing countries, such as India, Brazil, and South Africa, led to the great transformation of the world economy and trade network. These countries have recently become the regional trading centers. 4) With a high-speed development of the economy, China saw a dramatic rise in global trade and has become the center of the largest global trade bloc, exceeding the United States. Finally, this article briefly discussed the importance of long-term trade network research for the Belt and Road initiative.
The Impact of Carbon Tariffs on China's Agricultural Trade

Abstract:On 15 March 2022, the European Council reached an agreement on the relevant rules of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). In order to study the impact of the implementation of carbon tariffs on China's agricultural trade, this paper sets three control groups, namely, economic development, the impact of the "Belt and Road" initiative's (BRI's) trade facilitation level, and separate taxation by different countries, and uses the dynamic Global Trade Analysis Project-Environment (GTAP-E) model for policy simulation. The empirical results show that, firstly, carbon tariffs can suppress international demand for agricultural products and increase international market prices. At the same time, under the pressure of carbon tariffs, China will reduce the main agricultural product's Free on Board (FOB) prices to ensure that their Cost, Insurance and Freight (CIF) prices can maintain a competitive advantage in the international market after increasing the cost of carbon tariffs, and the market share of China's agricultural products exported to recipient countries will decline. Secondly, China's "Belt and Road" initiative has a two-way impact on carbon tariff policy. On the one hand, it reduces the negative impact of carbon tariffs through trade facilitation, and on the other hand, it will decrease the effectiveness of carbon emission reduction because of the huge trade demand and encourage countries to develop green and low-carbon agriculture. Finally, there is heterogeneity in the impact of carbon tariffs imposed by the United States, Japan, and Europe on Chinese agricultural trade.

Abstract:With the rapid acceleration of global industrial transfer, the complexity of world exports of high-tech products has increased significantly. This study aims to investigate the evolution of the network structure in international high-tech product trade and its impact on global value chain (GVC) indices. By analyzing the trade network and GVC indices, we explore the small-world characteristic of the international high-tech product trade (IHT) network and the significant spatial heterogeneity in its geographical pattern. While emerging industrialized countries are gradually gaining importance in the core-periphery structure, we observe that developed economies still maintain control over GVCs, as indicated by analyzing GVC indices. Furthermore, our empirical analysis reveals that network centrality has a positive effect on GVC participation and position indices, but linkage strength and power position in the network show a negative effect on GVC position index. These findings suggest that although the surge in high-tech product exports from latecomer countries is primarily driven by their focus on lower value-added functions, it does not result in higher positions for these countries within the GVCs. This discovery also provides further evidence for the dialectical debate on a spike in high-tech exports from developing countries.
