Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) nanoparticle is a high potential effective absorbent. Tetracycline (TC) is a broad-spectrum antibiotic produced, indicated for use against many bacterial infections. In the present research, a systematic study of the adsorption and release process of tetracycline on GO was performed by varying pH, sorption time and temperature. The results of our studies showed that tetracycline strongly loads on the GO surface via π-π interaction and cation-π bonding. Investigation of TC adsorption kinetics showed that the equilibrium was reached within 15 min following the pseudo-second-order model with observed rate constants of k2 = 0.2742-0.5362 g/mg min (at different temperatures). The sorption data has interpreted by the Langmuir model with the maximum adsorption of 323 mg/g (298 K). The mean energy of adsorption was determined 1.83 kJ/mol (298 K) based on the Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) adsorption isotherm. Moreover, the thermodynamic parameters such as ΔH°, ΔS° and ΔG° values for the adsorption were estimated which indicated the endothermic and spontaneous nature of the sorption process. The electrochemistry approved an ideal reaction for the adsorption under electrodic process. Simulation of GO and TC was done by LAMMPS. Force studies in z direction showed that tetracycline comes close to GO sheet by C8 direction. Then it goes far and turns and again comes close from amine group to the GO sheet.

Abstract:In this study, the adsorptions of tetracycline (TC) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) molecules on different surfaces of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) are investigated by using quantum chemical calculations. Our results reveal stable configurations for both the molecules, rGO surfaces, and their complexes, highlighting the favorable arrangements of TC and CP on the rGO surfaces, which facilitates intermolecular interactions at functional group sites such as -O-, -OH, >C=O, and -COOH. While the physical adsorption is observed for TC and CIP molecules on the rGO surface, the introduction of Ca 2+ cation promotes chemical adsorption of these molecules on rGO. It is noticeable that the adsorption of TC and CIP on Ca 2+ -supported rGO is stronger of five times than on rGO surfaces. Importantly, our findings demonstrate that the adsorption affinity of TC is higher than that of CIP on both the pristine rGO and Ca 2+ -supported surfaces. The existence and role of surface interactions are further elucidated through AIM and NBO analyses, revealing an essential role of O/N/C-H‧‧‧O hydrogen bonds in stabilizing configurations of TC and CIP on the rGO surface models. Notably, the presence of Ca‧‧‧O attractive electrostatic interaction enhances the stability of the adsorption configuration on the Ca 2+ -supported rGO surface. These insights emphasize the potential usage of rGO-based materials in the adsorption of antibiotic molecules for various environmental related applications.

Abstract:Significant concerns have been raised over pollution of antibiotics including tetracyclines in aquatic environments in recent years. Graphene oxide (GO) is a potential effective absorbent for tetracycline antibiotics and can be used to remove them from aqueous solution. Tetracycline strongly deposited on the GO surface via π–π interaction and cation–π bonding. The adsorption isotherm fits Langmuir and Temkin models well, and the theoretical maximum of adsorption capacity calculated by Langmuir model is 313mgg−1, which is approximately in a close agreement with the measured data. The kinetics of adsorption fits pseudo-second-order model perfectly, and it has a better rate constant of sorption (k), 0.065gmg−1h−1, than other adsorbents. The adsorption capacities of tetracycline on GO decreased with the increase in pH or Na+ concentration. The adsorption isotherms of oxytetracycline and doxycycline on GO were discussed and compared.

Abstract:The surface adsorption behavior of tetracycline (TC), a zwitterionic antibiotic, to goethite was investigated as a function of pH, ionic strength and TC concentration using batch adsorption experiments and structural information was derived from attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectrum observations. The spectroscopic results suggested that the tricarbonylamide group and the phenolic diketone group of the TC molecule were involved in interacting with the goethite surface depending on the pH level. A charge distribution surface complexation model was developed to describe the macroscopic adsorption trends. Two inner-sphere surface complexation species could successfully describe observed adsorption trends: under acidic condition TC may interact with the surface of goethite, forming a monodentate complex through the tricarbonylamide group, while under alkaline condition forming a more stable bidentate complex via the tricarbonylamide and phenolic diketone groups. The model could well predict the adsorption behavior of TC under a relatively wide range of pH, ionic strength and surface coverage. However, since the model did not fully consider the molecular size of TC, the model might overestimate the adsorption when TC surface coverage is higher than 1.42 μmol m(-2).
Mechanism of Adsorption of Tetracycline–cu Multi‐pollutants by Graphene Oxide (GO) and Reduced Graphene Oxide (Rgo)

Abstract:BACKGROUND The adsorption of single pollutants onto graphene oxide (GO), such as heavy metals or organics, has been widely investigated, however, the simultaneous removal of the antibiotic-heavy metal multi-pollutants from the intensive livestock and poultry industry has been investigated little. In this study, the GO/reduced GO(rGO) were prepared as adsorbent and the adsorption performance of tetracycline (TC), Cu2+, and the multi-pollutants TC-Cu were investigated. RESULTS The GO surface was abundant in oxygen-containing functional groups but was affected by a reduction effect, and thus rGO lost a large amount of -OH. In the presence of Cu2+, GO's adsorption quantity of TC increased by 96.64%, which was considerably higher than the increase (23.31%) observed in the case of rGO. In contrast, the adsorptivity of GO/rGO in Cu2+ increased slightly with the addition of TC. Further, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis revealed that the Cu2+ participated in a bridging interaction between TC and the adsorbent, forming a complexation TC-Cu. CONCLUSION GO and rGO showed favorable adsorption of TC, Cu2+, and TC-Cu. The adsorption capacity of multi-pollutants was increased compared with individual adsorption, indicating a cooperative adsorption between the TC and Cu2+. The adsorption mechanism mainly included pi-pi conjugation, electrostatic interactions, and the bridge connection by Cu2+, which contributed to the performance of GO/rGO with respect to the adsorption of the antibiotic-heavy metal multi-pollutants. Efficient Removal of Tetracycline with KOH-activated Graphene from Aqueous Solution

Abstract:Activated graphene absorbents with high specific surface area (SSA) were prepared by an easy KOH-activated method, and were applied in absorbing antibiotics, such as tetracycline (TC). After activation, many micropores were introduced to graphene oxide sheets, leading to higher SSA and many new oxygen-containing functional groups, which gave KOH-activated graphene excellent adsorption capacity (approx. 532.59 mg g −1 ) of TC. Further study on the adsorption mechanism showed that the Langmuir isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model fitted with experiment data. To further understand the adsorption process, the effects of solid–liquid ratio, pH, ionic strength and coexisting ions were also investigated. The results revealed that, compared with pH and ionic strength, solid–liquid ratio and coexisting ions (Cu 2+ , CrO 4 2− ) had more significant influence over the adsorption performance. The findings provide guidance for application of KOH-activated graphene as a promising alternative adsorbent for antibiotics removal from aqueous solutions.
Facile Techniques to Synthesize Reduced Graphene Oxide for Removing Tetracycline From Water: Kinetics and Thermodynamics Studies

Abstract:Abstract In this study, reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was successfully produced from graphite precursor by chemical oxidation and exfoliation processes which were followed by a reduction process in mild conditions. rGO was then applied in the adsorption of tetracycline (TC) in water. SEM/EDX, XRD, FT-IR, BET, pH pzc were conducted to characterize the synthesized materials. The adsorption efficiency of TC from water was evaluated by changes in several factors such as contact time, temperature, pH of the solution, adsorbent load, and tetracycline concentration. Furthermore, adsorption kinetics, thermodynamics, and isotherms were also investigated. As the result, the adsorption process of TC onto rGO was spontaneous, endothermic, and governed by both physisorption and chemisorption. The maximum uptake calculated from Langmuir isotherm model was 58.03 mg/g. rGO material could be regenerated by using methanol and diluted NaOH solutions. The findings in this work provides a complete data on the TC adsorption process onto rGO and the process of recovery and reuse of rGO.

Abstract:Background The elimination of antibiotics from wastewater has received extensive academic and social attentions since the increasingly antibiotic-related pollution posed fatal threat to aquatic ecosystem and public health. Method Herein, a high-performance Cu-loaded reduced graphene oxide (C-rGO) was prepared via in-situ formation of Cu nanoparticle on graphene oxide (GO), which was subsequently applied to tetracycline (TC) removal. Significant Findings It was found that compared to the pristine rGO, the TC adsorption capacity of C-rGO was significantly enhanced, which could reach up to a record-high value of 3078 mg g - 1 . Adsorption kinetics and isotherms for TC onto C-rGO can be well-fitted by pseudo-first order kinetic model and Langmuir model, respectively. The ultrahigh TC adsorption capacity of C-rGO might be attributed to multi-interactions, i.e., π-π interaction, cation-π bonding, surface complexation, electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bond. In addition, the removal efficiency of C-rGO still kept relatively high level after being used for 4 cycles, illustrating outstanding recyclability of C-rGO. And C-rGO showed excellent adsorption capacities for other antibiotics, such as oxytetracycline, chlortetracycline hydrochloride, ciprofloxacin, sulfamethoxazole and norfloxacin. The ultrahigh TC adsorption ability and outstanding reusability highlighted its great application potential in the field of antibiotic-related wastewater treatment. Abstract:Nanomaterials were widely used as efficient adsorbents for environmental remediation of tetracycline pollution. However, the separation of the adsorbents posed the challenge to their practical applications. In this study, we grew magnetic MnFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles on the reduced graphene oxide (rGO) to form MnFe 2 O 4 /rGO nanocomposite with a one-step method. When used as the absorbent of Tetracycline, it exhibited an adsorption capacity of 41 mg/g. The adsorption kinetics and isotherm were fitted well with the pseudo-second order model and Freundlich model, respectively. The MnFe 2 O 4 /rGO nanocomposite could be easily extracted from the solution with the external magnetic field and regenerated with acid washing.

Abstract:Tetracyclines (TCs) constitute a group of antibiotics that are commonly used to treat bacterial diseases, in veterinary medicine and as an additive in animal feed. This broad application has led to their accumulation in food products and the environment because sewage treatment plants cannot completely remove them. Therefore, the aim of this study was to synthesize graphene oxide (GO) and evaluate its TC adsorption properties in aqueous media. The effects of pH (between 2.5 and 11) and Ca 2+ concentration (between 0 and 1 M) were thoroughly investigated. Structural, textural, and electrokinetic properties of the prepared GO were determined by N 2 adsorption/desorption, XRD, TEM, UV–vis, FTIR, XPS, thermogravimetry and electrophoretic mobility measurements. TC adsorption on GO is an interplay between the two main roles played by Ca 2+ : competitor or bridging cation. At low pH, there is cation exchange, and Ca 2+ behaves as a competitor of the positively charged TC species, decreasing adsorption as calcium concentration increases. At high, the formation of Ca bridges between the surface and TC (GO-Ca 2+ -TC) is favored, increasing the adsorption of the antibiotic by increasing calcium concentration. Different combinations of Ca 2+ and pH effects are important to improve the use of GO either as a pH-dependent and reversible TC adsorbent for decontamination or as pH-independent adsorbent for TC quantification with electrochemical sensors.

Abstract:A systematic study of the adsorption characteristics of commercial graphene nanoplatelets for tetracycline antibiotics (such as tetracycline, oxytetracycline, and chlortetracycline) was performed by varying pH, ionic strengths, contact time, temperature, and initial concentrations. Meanwhile, isothermal, kinetic and thermodynamic constants were also determined. The experimental results indicated that graphene is a potential effective adsorbent for tetracycline antibiotics with high adsorption capacity of up to 207.2 mg g(-1) for tetracycline, 240.4 mg g(-1) for chlortetracycline and 232.7 mg g(-1) for oxytetracycline from aqueous solutions. The solution pH in the range of 4-8 had a minor effect on the adsorption of three antibiotics. The adsorption kinetics of three antibiotics was found that the equilibrium was reached within 30 min following the pseudo-second-order model with high correlation coefficients (>0.99). The adsorption data could be well fitted by the Langmuir model. Moreover, the calculation of thermodynamic parameters indicated that the adsorption process of three antibiotics onto graphene nanoplatelets was the endothermic and spontaneous nature.
Fabrication of magnetic reduced graphene and its adsorption performance for antibiotics

Abstract:To solve significant problem of antibiotics pollution in aquatic environments,the magnetic reduction graphene (rGO/Fe3O4) was fabricated via coprecipitation method which was then used to study the removal of antibiotics pollution.The impact of pH,adsorption time and concentrations of antibiotics were investigated to evaluate the adsorption performances and mechanism of rGO/Fe3O4 for tetracycline (TC) and sulfadiazine (SDZ) as two typical contaminants.The experimental results showed that rGO/Fe3O4 was a potential effective absorbent for TC and SDZ,and the best adsorption pH were around 4.0 and 5.0 with the corresponding adsorption capacity of (114.29 ± 1.60) and (20.64 ±2.17)mg · g-1,respectively.The TC was better absorbed on rGO/Fe3O4 than SDZ.The kinetics of adsorption fitted pseudo-second-order model perfectly,which indicated that the adsorption of both antibiotics was governed by chemical reactions,rather than physical diffusion.The adsorption of TC was faster than SDZ through calculation.The adsorption isotherm fitted Langmuir model well,and the theoretical maxima of adsorption capacities were 123.46 and 28.49 mg · g-1,respectively,which closely agreed with the measured data.The rGO/Fe3O4 possessed a good magmatic separation that was realized rapidly.The antibiotics strongly deposited on the rGO/Fe3O4 surface via π-π interaction,hydrogen bonding,electrostatic and van der Waals force,making the rGO/Fe3O4 more suitable for removal of antibiotics.

Abstract:Tetracyclines antibiotics (TAs), a veterinary drug used widely, has greatly attracted the attention due to its potential threats. We report the nanocomposites of the α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles growth on reduced graphene oxide (RGO) by a one-pot method. The adsorptive amounts (216.2 mg g−1 for chlortetracycline, 180.8 mg g−1 for tetracycline and 98.4 mg g−1 for oxytetracycline) of the α-Fe2O3 @RGO nanocomposites was mainly correlated with the increasement of the uniform and well-dispersed α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles on RGO. The relatively low adsorptive amount of oxytetracycline is due to the synergetic effect of its relatively weak interactions with RGO and relatively slack complexation with α-Fe2O3, which also provides an experimental proof for the theoretical prediction previously reported. The TAs adsorption by the α-Fe2O3 @RGO nanocomposites is achieved for 20 min and strongly pH-dependent due to the enhanced repulsive interaction at low or high pH. The TAs adsorptions fitted well the Langmuir and the pseudo-second-order equations.

Abstract:Porous carbon is commonly used in the effective removal of antibiotics from water. The geometry of nanopores plays a vital role in determining the adsorption properties of porous carbon. Aiming to reveal the adsorption mechanism and the dependence on the porous geometry, the mass transfer and adsorption performance of tetracycline (TC) in various shaped carbon nanopores was observed in this study by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. The results show that the molecular diffusion of water and TC in nanopores is confined than that in bulk solution. The mass transfer in cylindrical through pores (THC) is more efficient than that in blind pores. The accumulated presence probability of TCs within the nanopore of THC is over twice as high as in the blind nanopores. THC exhibits the best adsorption rate and capacity in this study, and the adsorption ability of the blind nannopores follows the order BHC-Cy (cylindrical blind pore) > BHC-Co (conical blind pore) > BHC-Sp (spherical blind pore). Both the cylindrical and bottom surface in BHC-Cy are effective adsorption sites, while the adsorption is seldom found in the bottoms of BHC-Co and BHC-Sp. Surface diffusion of adsorbed TC molecules along the carbon surface was investigated. The sphere-shaped blind pore was found unfavorable for the adsorption of TC from water.

Abstract:Spongy graphene adsorbents have attracted great research interest recently, because of the high adsorption capacity, easy handling, and low operating cost. Fabrication of graphene sponge with other high-performance adsorbents might combine the merits of both materials, thus deserves more investigations. In this study, TiO 2 –graphene sponge (TiO 2 –GS) was prepared by the deposition of amorphous TiO 2 on graphene oxide (GO) sheets for the adsorption of tetracycline antibiotics, where lyophilization was adopted to obtain the porous structure. TiO 2 –GS adsorbed tetracycline with a large adsorption capacity of 1,805 mg/g, larger than that of GO (313 mg/g) and GO-chitosan aerogel (1,470 mg/g). The adsorption kinetics, which finally reached the equilibrium at 48 h, was clearly controlled by the diffusion of tetracycline to TiO 2 –GS in the initial stage according to intraparticle diffusion model. Thermodynamics investigation indicated that the adsorption process was endothermic and promoted at higher temperature, with a positive Δ H of 35.8 kJ/mol. Generally, higher pH facilitated the adsorption of tetracycline on TiO 2 –GS, except that the adsorption was also very effective at pH 1. In contrast, ionic strength had insignificant influence. The adsorbed tetracycline could be washed out with acidic ice-cold water to regenerate TiO 2 –GS. The implication to the applications of TiO 2 –GS in water treatment is discussed.

Abstract:For nanomaterials, such as GO and MOF-525, aggregation is the main reason limiting their adsorption performance. In this research, Alg-Cu@GO@MOF-525 was successfully synthesized by in-situ growth of MOF-525 on Alg-Cu@GO. By dispersing graphene oxide (GO) with copper alginate (Alg-Cu) with three-dimensional structure, MOF-525 was in-situ grown to reduce aggregation. The measured specific surface area of Alg-Cu@GO@MOF-525 was as high as 807.30 m2·g−1, which is very favorable for adsorption. The synthesized material has affinity for a variety of pollutants, and its adsorption performance is significantly enhanced. In particular, tetracycline (TC) was selected as the target pollutant to study the adsorption behavior. The strong acid environment inhibited the adsorption, and the removal percentage reached 96.6% when pH was neutral. Temperature promoted the adsorption process, and 318 K adsorption performance was the best under experimental conditions. Meanwhile, 54.6% of TC could be removed in 38 min, and the maximum adsorption capacity reached 533 mg·g−1, far higher than that of conventional adsorption materials. Kinetics and isotherms analysis show that the adsorption process accords with Sips model and pseudo-second-order model. Thermodynamic study further shows that the chemisorption is spontaneous and exothermic. In addition, pore-filling, complexation, π-π stack, hydrogen bond and chemisorption are considered to be the causes of adsorption.

Abstract:Antibiotic-related environmental contamination directly threatens ecosystems and human health. Adsorption is an efficient and simple treatment process for removing antibiotics from water environments. Attapulgite (ATP) is a natural clay mineral extensively researched as a promising adsorbent material in the food industry, pharmaceutical sanitation, and organic wastewater treatment. Graphene oxide (GO) is widely employed in the treatment of organic wastewater due to its superior physicochemical properties. Here, using high temperature and HCl, ATP was activated (a-ATP), and a GO/a-ATP composite was prepared via hydrothermal synthesis. Using an adsorbent dosage of 0.75 g L −1 , pH = 5, reaction time of 120 min, initial temperature = 35 °C, and initial TC concentration of 50 mg L −1 , the adsorption capacity of GO/a-ATP for TC was 38.8 mg g −1 . The pseudo-first-order model (PFO) and pseudo-second-order (PSO) model were fitted to the kinetic data, and yielded an R 2 -value of PSO (0.99991) > PFO (0.9389), indicating that the adsorption process is related to chemisorption. Adsorption was also well described by the mixed-order (MO) model ( R 2 = 0.9827), demonstrating that two rate-limiting adsorption reaction steps, diffusion and adsorption, occur; the former exerting greater influence. Equilibrium data was fitted to Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherm models; the Langmuir model gave the best fit, suggesting the adsorption process is a homogeneous and monolayer adsorption process. Various thermodynamic parameters such as standard Gibbs free energy (Δ G 0 ) and standard enthalpy (Δ H 0 ) were also calculated, these results indicate the adsorption reaction is an endothermic process. Our study shows that GO/a-ATP is a promising adsorbent material for use in the adsorption of tetracycline in aquatic environments.

Effects of Environmental Aging on the Adsorption Behavior of Antibiotics from Aqueous Solutions in Microplastic-Graphene Coexisting Systems.

Abstract:The extensive use of nanofillers, such as graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO), as plastic additives has led to the coexistence of microplastics (MPs) and nanomaterials in aquatic environments. However, there is a lack of studies on the adsorption behavior of MPs when coexisting with GO. Moreover, MPs and GO are prone to undergoing aging processes in real environments under conditions such as sunlight exposure, which changes their physicochemical properties and affects their adsorption behavior. In this study, the aging processes of MPs and GO in a real environment were simulated by ultraviolet (UV) irradiation and thermal treatments, respectively. The adsorption behavior of ciprofloxacin (CIP) on three types of MPs (polypropylene (PP), polyamide (PA), and polystyrene (PS)) before and after aging was explored. The MPs are ordered in terms of CIP adsorption capacity as aged-PA > aged-PS > aged-PP > PA > PP > PS, and the adsorption capacity of aged MPs was approximately twofold higher than that of pristine MPs. This paper also studied the adsorption performance of antibiotics in a coexisting system of aged MPs and GO/rGO, and the tetracycline (TC) adsorption capacity was increased by -336% in aged PP-GO and -100% in an aged PP-rGO coexisting system. GO/rGO with high degree of oxidation and concentration in an aged- PP-GO/rGO coexisting system are more conducive to the TC adsorption, due to the contribution of oxygen-containing functional groups. Surface and partition adsorption co-occurred during the TC adsorption process. The TC adsorption behavior in the MPs-GO/rGO coexisting system was strongly dependent on the solution pH, which was more favorable under acidic (pH = 3) or alkaline (pH = 11) conditions. This study improves the understanding of the environmental behavior of MPs, graphene, and antibiotics and guides research on strategies for preventing the migration of antibiotics in MPs-GO/rGO coexisting systems. Abstract:The related properties of graphite and tetracycline were studied,and the adsorption of tetracycline on graphite was investigated by the method of static adsorption experiments.The results indicate that the variations of the adsorption capacity,K_(ow) value of tetracycline and species distribution of tetracycline(+,-,0) perform alike in the aspect of pH.The major driving force of the adsorption mentioned above is the hydrophobic force and the maximum of the driving force appears between pH=5～6.The increase of tetracycline' s solubility and the electrostatic repulsion between tetracycline and graphite surface weaken the driving force under other pH conditions.

Abstract:Graphene and its derivatives are frequently used in cancer therapy, and there has been widespread interest in improving the therapeutic efficiency of targeted drugs. In this paper, the geometrical structure and electronic effects of anastrozole(Anas), camptothecin(CPT), gefitinib (Gefi), and resveratrol (Res) on graphene and graphene oxide(GO) were investigated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. Meanwhile, we explored and compared the adsorption process between graphene/GO and four drug molecules, as well as the adsorption sites between carriers and payloads. In addition, we calculated the interaction forces between four drug molecules and graphene. We believe that this work will contribute to deepening the understanding of the loading behaviors of anticancer drugs onto nanomaterials and their interaction.
