Abstract:Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) is a structured and coordinated approach for identifying, assessing, and managing risks faced by an organization. Implementing ERM standards and frameworks has several benefits, including improving focus and perspective on risk. ERM aids in developing leading indicators to detect potential risk events and provide early warning signals. ERM also incorporates key metrics and measurements of risk to improve reporting value and analysis and monitor possible changes in risk vulnerabilities or likelihood. An ERM facilitates an efficient risk management (RM) process, allowing businesses to manage risks efficiently across various departments through a robust risk management framework. This framework includes the related department’s team, working rules, and operational tools, covering all types of risks, including financial, strategic, operational, and accidental losses. The primary advantage of ERM is its ability to create a systematic and intentional process for identifying and addressing risks, treating risk management as a structured exercise where liabilities are addressed as part of a comprehensive framework rather than ad-hoc problem-solving. ISO 31000, NIST risk management framework, and COSO ERM framework are widely used frameworks for managing enterprise risks. Implementing a robust enterprise risk management standard has a positive relationship with business performance.

Abstract:A bibliometric study of 510 enterprise risk management (ERM) papers from the Web of Science Core Collection (WOS-CC) database from 2004 to 2023 is presented in this article. The study's main goal was to give a bibliometric overview of ERM research, focusing on annual publications, references, journals, authors, author affiliations, and nations. Each article's author, document type, publication year, source, volume, edition, pages, number of citations, and references were obtained from WOS in BibTex format. To help the research, Biblioshiny evaluated this data. The survey indicated that ERM research has increased fast over the previous two decades, with a consistent upward trend and increasing pace in the past five years. "What's wrong with risk matrices?" by Cox, LA (2008) was the most cited publication in this topic, and the Journal of Risk and Financial Management was the most influential journal. David L. Olson of the University of Nebraska Lincoln was the most prolific author, and UNL was the premier research institution in this area, according to the survey. ERM research was heavily influenced by the US and several other countries. To further ERM research, the paper recommends international collaboration. More research can refine the identification of ERM research hotspots and emerging trends, according to the report.

Abstract:Enterprise risk management (ERM) is an important process for organizations to manage risks and identify opportunities in a holistic manner. Earlier studies have explored antecedents and consequences of ERM programs considering organizational, procedural, technical, and other related factors. However, limited evidence is available regarding the effectiveness of ERM programs. Using semi-structured interviews with ERM experts, this paper explores how experts assess the efficacy and quality of ERM programs and whether they adopt project management (PM) and total quality management (TQM) tools for implementing and improving the ERM program. Further, the Interpretive Structural Modeling (ISM) technique is used to explore causality among factors influencing the efficacy of an ERM program. The findings of this study provide useful insights to both practitioners and researchers to better understand the importance of assessing and enhancing the quality of ERM programs, and establish cause-effect relationships across factors influencing the efficacy of such programs.

Abstract:Risk Management (RM) is rapidly evolving; its practitioners are increasingly shifting focus from pure operational or financial risks to a broader Enterprise Risk Management (ERM). ERM involves a set of processes and methods used to manage risks that are not just associated with accidental losses but also associated with financial, strategic, technological and other business areas. This article highlights different factors that affect the adoption of ERM which include people’s perception of RM and the necessity for a risk-aware culture at all levels within organisations before adopting the ERM-based approach. The article also addresses a few popular ERM frameworks that help organisations to understand a complete picture of ERM activities and its functional areas. The work presented in this article is taken from an on-going project that is being undertaken to develop a practical tool for providing better analysis of risk data and improved knowledge management.

Abstract:Enterprise risk management (ERM) has emerged as a construct that ostensibly overcomes limitations of silo-based traditional risk management (TRM), yet little is known about its effectiveness. The scant research on the relationship between ERM and firm performance has offered mixed findings and has been limited by the lack of a suitable proxy for the degree of ERM implementation. Using Standard and Poor’s newly available risk management rating, the authors find evidence of a positive relationship between increasing levels of TRM capability and firm value but no additional increase in value for firms achieving a higher ERM rating. Considering these results, the authors suggest directions for future research.

Abstract:Establishing an enterprise risk management (ERM) system is widely viewed as providing firms with the tools and processes needed to build resilience and expertise, enabling them to manage the consequences of crises that have led to the collapse of major firms across different industries globally. Intended for use in advanced accounting, auditing, and finance courses, this case study (of a true event) describes the development and implementation of an ERM system for a U.S. multinational nonprofit firm during the 2015–2021 period. The case study’s main learning objectives are several-fold. First, couched within the recent economic environment, it informs students on some of the more important academic and applied research on corporate risk management. Second, students will learn to analyze the content of a questionnaire designed to capture the integrated effects of the firm’s risk culture, risk structure, risk governance, and control for establishing its risk profile. Third, they will learn to create and apply multi-dimensional risk indices to measure and prioritize the firm’s risk exposures. Finally, the last learning outcome focuses on strategies to triangulate the firm’s overall risk profile and risk prioritization results to construct mitigation strategies that build resilience and create value through risk diversification, information signaling, the exploitation of natural hedges, and enhancing the board’s governing efficiency. The nonprofit nature of the firm in this case study introduces no methodological or conceptual constraints or limitations in applying the proposed risk management methodologies to for-profit or publicly traded firms.

Abstract:Purpose This study aims to empirically investigate the relationship between enterprise risk management (ERM) and information technology (IT) security within the financial sector. Design/methodology/approach Risk officers of financial institutions licensed by the Central Bank of Ghana constituted the sample frame. A structured questionnaire was used to elicit data from the respondents. The structural equation modeling method was employed to analyze the hypothesized model. Findings The results revealed that ERM has a strong positive substantial effect on IT security within financial institutions. However, organizational culture failed to moderate the relationship between ERM and IT security. Practical implications A well-managed risk helps to eliminate ineffective, archaic and redundant technology as the originator of rising perils and organizational concerns in today's corporate financial institutions since ERM established a substantially strong positive correlation among the variables. Originality/value ERM studies in the African context are rare. This paper adds to contemporary literature by providing a new perspective toward the understanding of the relationship between ERM and IT security, especially in the financial industry.

Abstract:Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) is a contemporary trend that has gained momentum in recent years. ERM is a comprehensive approach to risk management that considers both operational and strategic risks that affect business objectives and success. The present research investigates the impact of ERM on the financial performance (FP) of listed Islamic banks in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. This study takes a quantitative approach, employing secondary data collection methods and content analysis. The study analyses a sample of 221 yearly observations from 23 listed Islamic banks in the GCC from 2011–2020. The ERM implementation and FP measures were derived from previous studies. The study discovered that ERM implementation is associated with an increase in accounting performance but not with changes in market performance for Islamic banks. Our study confirms that Islamic banks perform better in the short term after implementing ERM controls but have no impact on long-term value creation. This study provides valuable insight on the benefits of enhancing GCC Islamic banks' ERM implementation decision-making processes. Finally, the empirical findings can assist managers, policymakers, and regulators in improving bank performance by implementing best practices of ERM in GCC Islamic banks and countries with similar socioeconomic environments.

Abstract:This study aimed to identify the impact of the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) model with its various dimensions (internal environment, setting goals, event identification, risk assessment, risk response, control activities, information and communication, monitoring) in reducing business risks in Jordanian commercial banks. In addition, the study aimed to identify the mediating role of corporate governance in the relationship between the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) model in reducing business risks in Jordanian commercial banks. The population of the study consisted of all 13 Jordanian commercial banks, where the intentional sample method was used for the analysis that represented all 799 branch managers of Jordanian commercial banks. 300 questionnaires were distributed; 282 questionnaires were retrieved and 274 questionnaires were used for data analysis and testing the hypotheses for their validity. Based on the statistical results, the study concluded that there was a statistically significant impact of the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) model with its various dimensions (internal environment, setting goals, event identification, risk assessment, risk response, control activities, information and communication, monitoring) in reducing business risks in Jordanian commercial banks. However, the internal environment dimension of the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) model did not make a significant contribution to reducing business risks in Jordanian commercial banks. The study recommended that departments in Jordanian commercial banks develop a time-bound action plan that clarifies the roles and responsibilities related to enterprise-risk management.

Abstract:ABSTRACT This study examines the relationship between five enterprise risk management (ERM) components and their influence on the effectiveness of ERM. The study particularly focuses on the role of risk awareness as an ERM component within the interplay of other formal ERM components. The five ERM components result from a factor analysis applied on a list of risk management (RM) practices in nonfinancial firms. Based on survey data from 118 companies, I find evidence supporting an indirect effect of risk awareness on RM effectiveness. My analyses support that the use of RM tools strengthens the relationship between risk awareness and RM effectiveness, but I only find inconclusive evidence supporting a direct association between risk awareness and RM effectiveness. As antecedents of risk awareness, I find support for both organizational environment and reporting processes. Moreover, risk awareness carries the effects of organizational environment and reporting processes to RM effectiveness. This study shows empirically that risk awareness is a vital cultural component in a firm's ERM system. It thus contributes to existing research in management accounting and control by providing insights into the role of risk awareness as a concept related to other ERM components.

Abstract:The Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) process has heterogeneously developed across the world, although it represents a leading paradigm, supporting organizations to identify, evaluate, and manage risks at the enterprise level. Academics have studied the process, but there is no complete picture of the determinants and implications of such an integrated risk management process. Therefore, we present a systematic empirical literature review on ERM, based on a research protocol. The review highlights that the ERM literature can be divided into four general lines of research: the ERM adoption, the determinants of the ERM implementation, the effects of ERM adoption, and other aspects. In contrast to the richness of studies devoted to ERM engagement in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), studies exploring ERM adoption in banks or insurance are relatively few. The literature review has revealed that the most frequently investigated effect of ERM is on firm performance. Little effort has been dedicated to the analysis of the effectiveness of ERM by its components and to institutional, individual, and organizational factors that affect ERM adoption. The study can serve as a starting point for scholars to explore research gaps related to ERM, while the practitioners can rely on the presented findings to identify the effects of the ERM implementation.
The Valuation Implications of Enterprise Risk Management Maturity

Abstract:Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) is the discipline by which enterprises monitor, analyze, and control risks from across the enterprise, with the goal of identifying underlying correlations and thus optimizing the risk‐taking behavior in a portfolio context. This study analyzes the valuation implications of ERM Maturity. We use data from the industry leading Risk and Insurance Management Society Risk Maturity Model over the period from 2006 to 2011, which scores firms on a five‐point maturity scale. Our results suggest that firms that have reached mature levels of ERM are exhibiting a higher firm value, as measured by Tobin's Q. We find a statistically significant positive relation to the magnitude of 25 percent. Upon decomposition of the maturity score, we find that the most important aspects of ERM from a valuation perspective relate to the level of top–down executive engagement and the resultant cascade of ERM culture throughout the firm. Firms that have successfully integrated the ERM process into both their strategic activities and everyday practices display superior ability in uncovering risk dependencies and correlations across the entire enterprise and as a consequence enhanced value when undertaking the ERM maturity journey ceteris paribus.

Abstract:Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) is an approach that systematically assesses, treats, monitors, and reviews risks to enhance an enterprise's value and its ability to anticipate and prepare for imminent risks. Previous studies have mainly focused on the impact of ERM implementation on financial performance, while its relationship with non-financial performance, particularly sustainability performance, has received less attention. This study aims to explore the level of ERM implementation and develop a framework to investigate its effect on sustainability performance, encompassing economic, environmental, and social aspects. The study proposes a questionnaire survey to be distributed to respondents involved in risk management implementation, such as the risk committee, risk management workgroup, and the top corporate risk working group, among state government-linked companies. By gathering insights on companies' ERM implementation and sustainability performance, the study aims to conceptualize the relationship between the two. For data analysis, the statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) is proposed to investigate relationships between constructs and latent variables. Understanding the penetration level of ERM implementation and its impact on sustainability performance will offer valuable insights for formulating strategies to improve the overall performance of state government-linked companies. Enterprise Risk Management Measurement: Insights from an Interdisciplinary Literature Review

Abstract:Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) represents a paradigm envisioned to provide an organization both resilience and opportunity in the face of uncertainty. The debate around ERM’s value contribution to the organization has led to key ERM research questions arising, highlighting the need for further investigation of empirical measurement of ERM and its implementation. Calls from several scholars specifically request extending the academic body of knowledge on ERM measurement. Motivated by the above calls, this study presents the findings of a systematic review of the ERM literature. The review examines the academic discipline of journals existing ERM studies are published in, these journals’ H-indices, the location of the studies, and the methodology of how ERM is measured in the studies. The review establishes that the ERM literature cuts across several academic research disciplines such as accounting, finance and strategy. Moreover, the extant literature underscores that it is very difficult to quantify and measure ERM in practice within organizations. Consequential to this, most empirical studies of ERM have emphasized either a qualitative approach focusing in depth on specific organizations, or a quantitative approach relying on accessible, basic secondary data available in company reports. A gap in knowledge is presented around extending ERM measurement, in particular in terms of methodologies based on primary data collection and analysis. This paper concludes that further development of empirical measurement scales based on primary data, whereby direct, first-hand input from members of organizations implementing ERM is collected, will augment the ERM body of knowledge. Such scales will allow for important aspects of ERM as it is implemented in the organization to be empirically measured.

Abstract:Global economic crises and complexities in the business environment have flawed the traditional risk management system. These have provided lessons to business leaders and enhanced the popularity of Enterprise Risk Management (ERM). ERM is the holistic approach to managing the overall risks of an organisation to achieve its strategic goals. Despite its relevance, the question about the appropriate measurement for ERM and the performance of ERM remains. This study provides a comprehensive and systematic literature review on the measurement and performance of ERM. Google Scholar was the primary search tool for ERM literature from 2001 to 2020, and papers listed in SCImago journal ranking were discussed. According to the review, there is no specific approach to measuring ERM; hence, scholars rely on different proxies. Most studies rely on secondary sources, particularly the Chief Risk Officer's appointment as a simple ERM proxy. This approach is widely adopted in the literature due to the difficulty in assessing ERM information. This paper recommends that further studies on the empirical measurement of ERM should rely on both primary and secondary data as they complement each other. This will provide more insight and allow more factors to be considered for a robust ERM measurement. In terms of performance, the ERM literature reveals mixed findings; however, there is enough evidence to support the assertion that ERM enhances firm profitability and value. Also, an advanced level of ERM implementation significantly improves firm performance. We suggest that scholars consider examining the ERM-performance relationship in emerging economies, as most of these studies centred on the US and European economies. In addition, future studies should consider investigating the non-linear relationship and how moderating factors affect the ERM-performance relationship. Firms must also strengthen their ERM system, as a higher level of ERM implementation improves performance.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Research on enterprise risk management (ERM) has increased considerably in the past two decades. Although management accounting researchers have substantially contributed to these advancements, previous reviews of the ERM literature have not discussed in depth the role of ERM as part of the organizational control package and how management accounting research could build on its research traditions to further our collective understanding of ERM. In this paper, we therefore adopt a management control perspective to critically analyze both quantitative and qualitative empirical ERM research and specifically focus on the integration of ERM in organizational control packages. Taking a complementarity perspective and accounting for the decision-facilitating and decision-influencing purposes of management accounting and control systems (MACS), we recommend several broader avenues for future management accounting research on ERM.

Abstract:This research empirically looked at Enterprise Risk Management impact on accounting quality of selected listed firms in the Nigerian financial sector. The study engaged the use of content analysis of the selected listed firms’ annual financial reports and corporate websites in determining the ERM disclosure index and its impact on accounting quality for a period of five years (pre-ERM period) (2007–2011) and another five years period (post-ERM period) (2013–2017). In attaining the proposed objectives, the study employed the panel Generalized Method of Moments estimator to test the hypotheses and find out the relationship between the variables. The study observed from the findings that there is no significant association between enterprise risk management and accounting quality during the pre-ERM period. This study adds to the body of knowledge in the area of corporate reporting, risk disclosure, risk management and accounting quality in emerging economies especially the Sub-Saharan African countries.

Abstract:Purpose This study investigates firm attributes (namely level of capitalisation, scope of operation, organisational structure, organisational lifecycle, systemic importance and size) affecting the robustness of enterprise risk management (ERM) practice, the extent to which ERM affects the performance of banks and the impact of ERM on the long-term sustainability of banks in Nigeria. This was against the backdrop that the 2012 banking reform was a major regulatory intervention that mainstreamed ERM in the Nigerian banking sector. Design/methodology/approach The study employed a mixed methodology of content, trend and quantitative analyses. Ex post facto research design was deployed to analyse performance differential of banks, with respect to the implementation of ERM, over a 10-year period (2008–2017). A disclosure checklist developed from the COSO ERM integrated framework was used to assess the robustness of ERM by content-analysing divulgence on risk management in published annual reports. The banking reform periods were dichotomised into pre- (2008–2012) and post- (2013–2017) reform periods. Jonckheere–Terpstra test, independent sample t -test and Mann–Whitney test were applied to analyse a total of 1,036 firm-year observations over the period 2008–2017. Findings Result shows that bank attributes significantly affecting the robustness of risk management practice are level of capitalisation, scope of operation, systemic importance and size. Performance of banks improved slightly during the post-2012 banking reform period. This suggests that as banks consolidate on the gains of ERM, benefits of the regulatory policy on risk management may be realised in the long run. Result also shows that ERM enhances long-term performance, connoting that effective risk management could serve as a competitive strategy for surviving turbulence that typically characterises the banking sector. Practical implications The emergence of level of capitalisation, scope of operation, systemic importance and size as determinants of ERM provides empirical evidence to support the practice of reviewing the capital requirements for banking business from time to time by regulatory authorities (i.e. recapitalisation policy) as a strategy for managing systemic risk. Top management of banks may consider instituting mechanisms that will ensure risk management is given prominence. A proactive approach must be taken to convert risks to opportunities by banks and other financial institutions, going forward, to cope with the vicissitudes of financial intermediation. Originality/value The originality of the study stems from the consideration that it provides some new insights into the impact of ERM on banks long-term sustainability in a developing country. The study also contributes to knowledge by exposing the factors determining the robustness of risk management practice. The study developed a checklist for assessing ERM practice from annual reports and other risk management disclosure documents. The paper also adds to the scarce literature on risk governance and risk management.

Abstract:Abstract The need to improve upon organizational performance and operational effectiveness call for sustainable industrial development and Risk management initiatives to deliver new corporate business models. An organizations interest to integrate and implement strategic approaches to identify, access and prepare against uncertainties through its business activities hold more benefits as per increased productivity. The authors’ investigation via an in-depth interview comprising of the senior and mid-level management staff of a steel-product manufacturing company in Nigeria subscribes to a single case study. We explore the implementation challenges of Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) in the supply chain of manufacturing firms. The research infers the case firm; having implemented and succefully demonstrated the ISO90001 and ISO13000 (quality and environmental standard), struggles to register any benefits with the ERM-ISO31000 operative. The findings further point at the managerial disconnect to effectively communicate the objective and the changing cultural practice. Also, notable was the worker’s perception of lacking the necessary information communication assistance to influence the ERM execution. The investigation contributes to the case firm understading of ERM and successful approach towards its implementation.
Enterprise Risk Management Program Quality: Determinants, Value Relevance, and the Financial Crisis

Abstract:This paper investigates factors associated with high‐quality Enterprise Risk Management ( ERM ) programs in financial services firms, and whether ERM quality enhances performance and signals credibility to the financial markets. ERM , developed with the assistance of the accounting profession, provides a framework and plan to integrate management of all sources of risk. Challenged by measurement difficulties common to research on management control systems, prior ERM studies present mixed findings. Using ERM quality ratings of financial companies by Standard & Poor's, we find that higher ERM quality is associated with greater complexity, less resource constraint, and better corporate governance. Controlling for such characteristics, we find that higher ERM quality is associated with improved accounting performance. Results show a market reaction to signals of enhanced management control from initial ERM quality ratings and rating revisions, and a stronger response to earnings surprises for firms with higher ERM quality. Focusing on the recent global financial crisis, our analysis suggests that there is no relation between ERM quality and market performance prior to and during the market collapse. However, returns of higher ERM quality companies are higher during the market rebound. Overall, results reveal that firm performance and value are enhanced by high‐quality controls that integrate risk management efforts across the firm, enabling better oversight of managers' risk‐taking behavior and aligning that behavior with the strategic direction of the company.
