Abstract:This work reviews the recent development of High Entropy Ceramics (HEC), which have five or more elements combined in equimolar or near equimolar quantities and have demonstrated unique properties. The comprehensive review is based on the general classifications of high entropy ceramics into carbides, borides, oxides, and other ceramic compounds. For each class of HECs, the synthesis processes, microstructure, and mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties are summarized in detail, with property data tables. Additionally, the fabrication and properties of HEC in the form of film, coatings, and composites are discussed. In addition to these material properties, this review article also highlights the utilization of computational studies and machine learning (ML) in the discovery of high entropy carbides. Finally, the overall conclusion of the current status and future research direction are discussed.

Abstract:High‐entropy strategy is a design that uses multiple elements to increase configurational entropy. As an emerging research field, high‐entropy was originally applied to metals, but it has shown great potential in inorganic non‐metallic materials. Since the first discovery of colossal dielectric permittivity in high‐entropy ceramics, it indicates that the high‐entropy strategy is feasible in dielectric ceramics. The multi‐ion solid solution will bring a broader space for the material structure and property tailoring. With the research of domestic and foreign scholars in high‐entropy dielectrics, we believe that entropic engineering can effectively regulate dielectric properties. The review paper explores the potential of the high‐entropy strategy in dielectric ceramics. It provides a detailed overview of the structural properties and the potential benefits of utilizing high‐entropy materials in dielectric ceramics. The review also covers the current research advancements in the field and provides insights into future directions for further development of high‐performance dielectric ceramics. They can also adjust the performance of high entropy ceramics by adjusting the proportion of raw materials, and have broad application prospects in many fields. This article provides a review of the high entropy effect, preparation methods, and main applications of high entropy ceramic materials, especially exploring relevant research on high entropy perovskite ceramics. It is expected to provide reference for the promotion of scientific research and the development of further large-scale applications of high-entropy ceramic materials.

Abstract:Abstract High-entropy ceramics (HECs) are solid solutions of inorganic compounds with one or more Wyckoff sites shared by equal or near-equal atomic ratios of multi-principal elements. Although in the infant stage, the emerging of this new family of materials has brought new opportunities for material design and property tailoring. Distinct from metals, the diversity in crystal structure and electronic structure of ceramics provides huge space for properties tuning through band structure engineering and phonon engineering. Aside from strengthening, hardening, and low thermal conductivity that have already been found in high-entropy alloys, new properties like colossal dielectric constant, super ionic conductivity, severe anisotropic thermal expansion coefficient, strong electromagnetic wave absorption, etc., have been discovered in HECs. As a response to the rapid development in this nascent field, this article gives a comprehensive review on the structure features, theoretical methods for stability and property prediction, processing routes, novel properties, and prospective applications of HECs. The challenges on processing, characterization, and property predictions are also emphasized. Finally, future directions for new material exploration, novel processing, fundamental understanding, in-depth characterization, and database assessments are given.

Abstract:High-entropy ceramic materials usually refer to the multi-principal solid solution formed by 5 or more ceramic components. Due to its novel ?high-entropy effect? and excellent performance, it has become one of the research hotspots in the field of ceramics in recent years. As the research system of high-entropy ceramics has gradually expanded from the initial rock salt oxides (Mg-Ni-Co-Cu-Zn)O to fluorite oxides, perovskite oxides, spinel oxides, borides, carbides and silicates, its special mechanical, electrical, magnetic and energy storage properties have been continuously discovered. Based on the basic principle of high-entropy materials, this paper mainly introduces the prominent perovskite-type oxide high-entropy ceramics in recent years from the perspective of ceramic structure and properties, and predicts the development trend of high-entropy perovskite-type ceramics in the next few years.

Abstract:High-entropy alloys (HEAs) provides a new way to develop new materials with adjustable performance due to their unique cocktail effect. Inspired by HEAs, a ceramic material with high-entropy effect has been developed, which was named high-entropy ceramics (HECs). With the introduction of the concept of entropy stability, research on HECs has developed rapidly. At present, research on the performance of HECs has extended to traditional performance such as thermomechanical performance, oxidation resistance, and magnetic properties, as well as emerging performance such as catalytic performance, optical properties, and radiation resistance. Based on the definition of HECs, this paper reviews the crystal structure and preparation methods of HECs and supplements the simulation calculation methods and descriptors which is suitable for HECs. In this paper, the performance of HECs at this stage is divided into traditional fields and emerging fields according to the application fields. A variety of performance regulation methods are reviewed, and the development and research directions of HECs are prospected.

High entropy ceramics for applications in extreme environments

Abstract:Compositionally complex materials have demonstrated extraordinary promise for structural robustness in extreme environments. Of these, the most commonly thought of are high entropy alloys, where chemical complexity grants uncommon combinations of hardness, ductility, and thermal resilience. In contrast to these metal-metal bonded systems, the addition of ionic and covalent bonding has led to the discovery of high entropy ceramics. These materials also possess outstanding structural, thermal, and chemical robustness but with a far greater variety of functional properties which enable access to continuously controllable magnetic, electronic, and optical phenomena. In this perspective, we outline the potential for high entropy ceramics in functional applications under extreme environments, where intrinsic stability may provide a new path toward inherently hardened device design. Current works on high entropy carbides, actinide bearing ceramics, and high entropy oxides are reviewed in the areas of radiation, high temperature, and corrosion tolerance where the role of local disorder is shown to create pathways toward self-healing and structural robustness. In this context, new strategies for creating future electronic, magnetic, and optical devices to be operated in harsh environments are outlined.

Abstract:High-entropy materials (HEM) have played a significant role in the current research due to their novel composition with their synergistic elemental interactions resulting in enhanced functional properties. By creating an environment for a diverse range of chemical compositions, HEMs offer unique opportunities for novel materials with superior properties compared to conventional materials. There has been a special focus on high-entropy materials, especially oxides. HEMs possess fundamentally distinct properties that have led to a wide range of applications within a variety of research fields. The current review article gives a thorough insight into the idea of High-Entropy oxide (HEO) materials along with their synthesis, properties, and functional application. A review of recent state-of-the-art publications is used exclusively to provide an overview of the current scientific breakthroughs and challenges that exist in the high entropy oxide system. This provides an overview of the subject and facilitates the design of several different high-entropy systems. The article concludes by discussing how high-entropy ceramics will be used in diverse applications in the future.

Abstract:High-entropy materials provide a versatile platform for the rational design of novel candidates with exotic performances. Recently, it has been demonstrated that high-entropy ceramics (HECs), depending on their compositions, show great application potential because of their superior structural and functional properties. However, the immense phase space behind HECs significantly hinders the efficient design and exploitation of high-performance HECs through traditional trial-and-error experiments and expensive ab-initio calculations. Machine learning (ML), on the other hand, has become a popular approach to accelerate the discovery of HECs and screen HECs with exceptional properties. In this article, we review the recent progress of ML applications in discovering and designing novel HECs, including carbides, nitrides, borides, and oxides. We thoroughly discuss different ingredients that are involved in ML applications in HECs, including data collection, feature engineering, model refinement, and prediction performance improvement. We finally provide an outlook on the challenges and development directions of future ML models for HEC predictions.

Abstract:High-entropy ceramics (HECs) have quickly gained attention since 2015. To date, nearly all work has focused on five-component, equimolar compositions. This perspective article briefly reviews different families of HECs and selected properties. Following a couple of our most recent studies, we propose a step forward to expand HECs to compositionally complex ceramics (CCCs) to include medium-entropy and non-equimolar compositions. Using defective fluorite and ordered pyrochlore oxides as two primary examples, we further consider the complexities of aliovalent cations and anion vacancies as well as ordered structures with two cation sublattices. Better thermally insulating yet stiff CCCs have been found in non-equimolar compositions with optimal amounts of oxygen vacancies and in ordered pyrochlores with substantial size disorder. It is demonstrated that medium-entropy ceramics can prevail over their high-entropy counterparts. The diversifying classes of CCCs provide even more possibilities than HECs to tailor the composition, defects, disorder/order, and, consequently, various properties.

Abstract:With the increasing demand for high energy density and reliable dielectric capacitors in the field of power electronics, the research and manufacture of ceramic capacitor materials face significant challenges. At present, the traditional design ideas of dielectric ceramic materials have gradually formalized, and the system is complex and similar, whether it can design dielectric ceramic materials with high performance from a new viewpoint and explore the underlying mechanism remains a great challenge. This paper is based on ceramic capacitors with high energy storage performance, a series of high-entropy perovskite oxide ceramics designed by the concept of "entropy engineering" in the past five years are reviewed. The relationship between microstructure and macroscopic energy storage performance of materials is discussed based on the four effects of high-entropy ceramics. We predict that "entropy engineering" will be a successful strategy to break through the bottleneck of dielectric materials with high energy storage performance. This review guides the custom design of composition-structure-properties in high-entropy energy storage ceramics.

Abstract:High-entropy borides are deemed robust candidates because of their complex combination of entropy-driven, multi-component disordered solid solutions. They are particularly remarkable for their unique single-crystal structures and significant bandgap. This structural adaptability positions them uniquely among materials, setting them apart from conventional transition metal diborides. Researchers have been fascinated by the appeal of high-entropy borides for a long time, driven by the groundbreaking idea of 'High entropy ceramics'. Nevertheless, the lack of thorough review papers in this field has hindered the progress of creating strong and durable high-entropy borides. This paper proposes adopting a collaborative strategy to properly negotiate this unexplored region. This perspective covers the up-to-date research on successfully synthesized high-entropy boride complexes. It examines compositional strategies, historical backgrounds, structural complexity, fabrication methods, mechanical, thermal, and oxidation properties, as well as emergent properties with potential uses, pathways, and future possibilities. This attempt challenges materials science traditions by introducing novel materials with superior performance.

Abstract:Recently, high-entropy (HE) materials have attracted increasing interest in various fields due to their unique characteristics. Rare earth (RE) elements have a similar atomic radius and gradually occupied 4f orbitals, endowing them with abundant optical, electric, and magnetic properties. Furthermore, HE-RE materials exhibit good structural and thermal stability and various functional properties, emerging as an important class of HE materials, which are on the verge of rapid development. However, a comprehensive review focusing on the introduction and in-depth understanding of HE-RE materials has not been reported to date. Thus, this review endeavors to provide a comprehensive summary of the development and research status of HE-RE materials, including alloys and ceramics, ranging from their structure, synthesis, and properties to applications. In addition, some distinctive issues of HR-RE materials related to the special electronic structure of RE are also discussed. Finally, we put forward the current challenges and future development directions of HE-RE materials. We hope that this review will provide inspiration for new design ideas and valuable references in this emerging field in the future.
High-entropy carbide ceramics: a perspective review

Abstract:High-entropy carbide ceramics (HECCs) exhibited a series of property superiority, such as high hardness, high oxidation resistance and adjustable range of thermal conductivity, making them great candidates for structural materials used in extreme service conditions. However, current HECC-related reports can only provide limited guidance for the design of HECC materials with promising properties and stable structure or for their high-quality fabrication. To fill this gap, we proposed in the current review that integrated efforts should be taken in the following three aspects to advance the design and fabrication of high-performance HECCs. First, the rule for the single-phase formation needs to be theoretically identified using high-throughput density functional theory calculations (HTDFT) and a highly accurate predictive model for rapid compositional design warrants establishment through the combination of HTDFT and machine-learning studies. In parallel with the compositional design, the lack of theoretical foundation and guidance for the synthesis of highly dense and highly pure HECC materials necessitates extensive studies focusing on the principle for the synthesis of HECC pre-alloy powders and on the powder densification mechanisms during high-temperature sintering. Moreover, great attentions are to be paid to the mechanistic understandings on the mechanical, oxidation and thermal conduction behaviors of HECC materials; for example, the toughening and strengthening mechanisms of HECC materials could be elucidated through discerning the "HECC composition-stacking fault energy distribution/bonding state-dislocation behavior" correlations.

Abstract:High entropy alloys (HEAs) represent a novel class of multi-component materials characterized by a paradigm-shifting design that incorporates five or more principal elements in nearly equal proportions. This configuration results in high configurational entropy and the formation of solid solutions. This review succinctly outlines the theoretical foundations of HEAs, including the entropy of the alloy and its thermodynamic stability, following a discussion of design principles and first-principles calculations that are crucial for alloy optimization, we provide a comprehensive review of various preparation techniques, such as mechanical alloying, magnetron sputtering, vacuum smelting, and additive manufacturing, emphasizing their influence on the properties of HEAs. The paper meticulously examines the core effects of these alloys—high entropy, lattice distortion, slow diffusion, and cocktail effects—which contribute to their unique attributes. Additionally, the review explores the promising applications of HEAs in sectors such as aerospace, energy, chemical industries, hydrogen storage, and ocean engineering, highlighting the increasing demand for advanced materials. Looking ahead, we propose future research directions that focus on the interplay between multi-scale structures and properties, interdisciplinary preparation technologies, and sustainable alloy recovery and reuse strategies. This review aims to provide both theoretical insights and practical guidelines for the rapidly evolving field of high entropy alloys.

Abstract:Refractory high entropy alloys have broad application prospects due to their excellent comprehensive properties in high temperature environments, and they have been widely implemented in many complex working conditions. According to the latest research reports, the preparation technology of bulk and coating refractory high entropy alloys are summarized, and the advantages and disadvantages of each preparation technology are analyzed. In addition, the properties of refractory high entropy alloys, such as mechanical properties, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, oxidation resistance, and radiation resistance are reviewed. The existing scientific problems of refractory high entropy alloys, at present, are put forward, which provide reference for the development and application of refractory high entropy alloys in the future, especially for plasma-facing materials in nuclear fusion reactors.

Abstract:A new class of ceramics, called entropy stabilized oxides, High Entropy Oxides (HEOs), multicomponent oxides, compositionally complex oxides, or polycation oxides, has generated considerable research interest since the first report in 2015. This multicomponent approach has created new opportunities for materials design and discovery. This Perspective will highlight some current research developments and possible applications while also providing an overview of the many successfully synthesized HEO systems to date. The polycation approach to composition development will be discussed along with a few case studies, challenges, and future possibilities afforded by this novel class of materials.

Abstract:High entropy ceramics (HECs) are a novel class of ceramics that exhibit high melting point, excellent high-temperature mechanical performance, and superb corrosion resistance, making them promising candidates for advanced nuclear reactors. Notably, encouraging irradiation tolerance has been found in a few HECs based on the scattered reports in the current literature. In this article, we systematically review the recent progress in the irradiation response of HECs, including high entropy carbides, high entropy pyrochlore oxides, high entropy MAX phases, and high entropy nitride films. The influence of chemical complexity on the irradiation properties of HECs is examined by comparing them with their corresponding single-component ceramic counterparts. Besides, the similarities and differences between HECs and widely-studied high entropy alloys are discussed regarding their irradiation responses. In the end, we envisage prospects for the future development of irradiation-tolerant HECs.

Abstract:Entropy, a measure of disorder or uncertainty in thermodynamics systems, has been extensively employed to tailor the electrical, thermal, and optical properties of 2D materials. This review highlights recent progress in entropy engineering of 2D materials, covering synthesis, properties, and applications, especially the structure‐property relationships resulting from theoretical predictions and experimental findings. An outlook on the key challenges and opportunities of such an emerging field of 2D materials is also provided. Entropy, a measure of disorder or uncertainty in the thermodynamics system, has been widely used to confer desirable functions to alloys and ceramics. The incorporation of three or more principal elements into a single sublattice increases the entropy to medium and high levels, imparting these materials a mélange of advanced mechanical and catalytic properties. In particular, when scaling down the dimensionality of crystals from bulk to the 2D space, the interplay between entropy stabilization and quantum confinement offers enticing opportunities for exploring new fundamental science and applications, since the structural ordering, phase stability, and local electronic states of these distorted 2D materials get significantly reshaped. During the last few years, the large family of high‐entropy 2D materials is rapidly expanding to host MXenes, hydrotalcites, chalcogenides, metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs), and many other uncharted members. Here, the recent advances in this dynamic field are reviewed, elucidating the influence of entropy on the fundamental properties and underlying elementary mechanisms of 2D materials. In particular, their structure‐property relationships resulting from theoretical predictions and experimental findings are discussed. Furthermore, an outlook on the key challenges and opportunities of such an emerging field of 2D materials is also provided.

Abstract:Ceramic coatings play a key role in extending the service life of materials in aerospace and energy fields by protecting materials from high temperature, oxidation, corrosion and thermal stress. Non-oxide and high entropy ceramics are new emerging coating materials which have been researched and developed in recent years. Compared with traditional oxide ceramics, non-oxide ceramics have better high temperature stability, oxidation resistance and erosion resistance. These characteristics make non-oxide ceramics perform well in extreme environments. It is particularly noteworthy that the non-oxide high entropy ceramic is a uniform solid solution composed of at least four or five atoms. Their unique structure and outstanding properties show great potential application in the field of coating. In this paper, the researches about regulating microstructure, preparation technology and properties of nitride and its high entropy system, carbide and its high entropy system and boride and its high entropy system in coating field are summarized, and their future development and prospects are prospected.
