Abstract:A facile, green and economical method for the high-efficiency utilization and functionalization of bamboo fiber could significantly improve the development of biomass industries. Here, we demonstrated a deep eutectic solvent, which formed from choline chloride (ChCl) and lactic acid (LC), as pretreating agent to delignify moso bamboo (<em class="EmphasisTypeItalic">Phyllostachys pubescens</em>) and produce nanocellulose. The results showed that most of the lignin was efficiently removed (94.39%) and 91% of the cellulose was recovered after the moso bamboo was pretreated with ChCl–LC at 120 °C for 3 h with a solid-to-liquid ratio of 1:25. Furthermore, nanofibers with widths of 20–80 nm were successfully prepared from pretreated fibers after a simple mechanical process. SEM and AFM images showed that they have excellent aspect ratio. In addition, the obtained nanofibers could be used to fabricate strong films which feature a high tensile strength ranged from 163 to 213 MPa.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to develop an efficient, green and economical method to utilize and functionalize bamboo fibers, especially Phyllostachys pubescens. Specifically, the research aims to use a deep eutectic solvent (DES) composed of choline chloride (ChCl) and lactic acid (LC) as a pretreatment agent to remove lignin from Phyllostachys pubescens and produce nanocellulose. Through this method, the development of the biomass industry can be significantly promoted, especially in the efficient utilization of Phyllostachys pubescens. The paper mentions that although traditional pretreatment methods are effective, they have problems such as environmental pollution, poor biodegradability and high production costs, which limit their industrial applications. Therefore, developing new, green and inexpensive solvents as pretreatment agents has become an important current topic. The ChCl - LC - based DES pretreatment method proposed in this paper can not only efficiently remove lignin, but also maintain a high cellulose recovery rate, and successfully prepare nanofibers with an excellent aspect ratio. These nanofibers can be used to manufacture high - strength films, showing a high tensile strength ranging from 163 to 213 MPa. In summary, this paper mainly solves the following problems: 1. **Efficient lignin removal**: Through ChCl - LC DES pretreatment, the lignin removal rate in Phyllostachys pubescens reached 94.39%. 2. **High cellulose recovery rate**: After pretreatment, the cellulose recovery rate exceeds 91%. 3. **Preparation of nanofibers**: Nanofibers with a width of 20 - 80 nm were successfully prepared from the pretreated fibers. 4. **Environment - friendly**: This method avoids the environmental pollution problems caused by traditional methods and reduces the cost of liquid waste treatment. 5. **High - value - added products**: The prepared nanofibers can be used to manufacture high - strength films and have potential high - value application prospects. These achievements not only contribute to the high - value utilization of Phyllostachys pubescens, but also provide new ideas and technical support for the sustainable development of the biomass industry.
