Abstract:Magnetically recyclable ZnFe2O4/ZnO nanocomposites immobilized on different content of graphene with favorable photocatalytic activity under solar light irradiation were successfully prepared on the basis of an ultrasound aided solution method. The molar ratio of ZnFe2O4 to ZnO and the content of graphene could be controlled by adjusting the amount of zinc salts and graphene oxide dispersions. The most excellent photocatalytic activity under solar light irradiation was displayed when the molar ratio of ZnFe2O4 to ZnO was 0.1 and the weight ratio of graphene to ZnFe2O4/ZnO was 0.04. Furthermore, the presence of magnetical ZnFe2O4 will facilitate the recycling process of photocatalyst nanoparticles.

Abstract:Graphene,which consists of an unique one-atom-thick planar sheet and a two-dimensional crystal structure,was found and synthesised as a nanomaterial in recent years.In order to improve the photocatalytic activity,combining graphene and semiconductor materials had been thought as one of hot topics which study new type of photocatalytic.The properties of graphene and its application is simply introduced,and the current research status of graphene in photocatalytic hydrogen production,photocatalytic degradation and photoelectric conversion,as well as graphene photocatalytic composite materials which are synthesised by different methods,are mainly reported to provide the experimental basis for preparing graphene composite materials later.

Abstract:Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of the noble metals improve the photocatalytic activity of semiconductor metal oxides in the visible light region. This work reports the facile preparation of SPR induced visible light active hierarchical ZnO/Ag nanocomposite photocatalysts by using environmental friendly two-step method. The prepared nanocomposites analyzed by using various techniques such as powder-XRD, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV–Vis spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, and photocurrent measurements. The results indicate the formation of hierarchical ZnO/Ag nanocomposites, which shows surface plasmon absorbance and enhanced photocurrent responses. Because of the SPR effect, the nanocomposites show improved visible light photocatalytic activity by enhancing the electron-hole pair separation in Rhodamine B degradation system.

Abstract:Visible-light-responsive Graphene-Ag/ZnO nanocomposites were fabricated using a facile, one-pot, nontoxic solvothermal process for the photodegradation of organic dyes. During the solvothermal process reduction of graphene oxide and loading of Ag-doped ZnO nanoparticles on two-dimensional graphene sheets were achieved. Electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray analysis, BET surface area measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and powder X-ray diffraction were used to confirm that the Ag-doped ZnO nanoparticles as randomly dispersed and effectively decorated on graphene sheets via covalent bonds between Zn and C atoms. Optical properties studied using UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy confirmed that the absorption edge of Ag-doped ZnO shifted to visible-light region with the incorporation of graphene. The as-synthesized Graphene-Ag/ZnO nanocomposites showed unprecedented photodecomposition efficiency compared to the Ag-doped ZnO, pristine ZnO and commercial ZnO under visible-light. The textile mill effluent containing organic substances was also treated using photocatalysis and the reduction in the chemical oxygen demand (COD) of the treated effluent revealed a complete destruction of the organic molecules along with colour removal. This dramatically enhanced photoactivity of the composite which is attributed to retarded charge recombination rate, great adsorption of dyes, enhanced visible light absorption and fast transfer processes. This research has the potential to provide new avenues for the in situ fabrication of the Graphene-Ag/ZnO composites as highly efficient photocatalysts. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Metallic plasmonic nanostructure arrays with coupled architectures can afford strong broadband light‐harvesting capability, efficient charge transfer, enhanced local electromagnetic field, and a large contact interface by controlling the morphology, composition, size, spacing, and dispersion of individual nanocomponents. In this work, an overview of plasmonic nanostructure arrays in a broad range from 0D to 3D for efficient photocatalysis is presented. Plasmon‐enhanced photocatalysis has emerged as a promising technology for solar‐to‐chemical energy conversion. Compared to isolated or disordered metal nanostructures, by controlling the morphology, composition, size, spacing, and dispersion of individual nanocomponents, plasmonic nanostructure arrays with coupling architectures yield strong broadband light‐harvesting capability, efficient charge transfer, enhanced local electromagnetic fields, and large contact interfaces. Although metallic nanostructure arrays are extensively studied for various applications, such as refractive index sensing, surface‐enhanced spectroscopy, plasmon‐enhanced luminescence, plasmon nanolasing, and perfect light absorption, the connection between surface plasmon resonance and enhanced photocatalysis remains relatively unexplored. In this study, an overview of plasmonic nanostructure arrays over a broad range, from 0D to 3D, for efficient photocatalysis is presented. By reviewing the fundamental mechanisms, recent applications, and latest developments of plasmonic nanostructure arrays in solar‐driven chemical conversion, this study reports on the latest guidance toward the integration of plasmonic nanostructures for functional devices in the fields of plasmonic, photonics, photodetection, and solar‐energy harvesting.

Abstract:Plasmonic nanomaterials have spurred significant research interest in enhanced solar-driven photocatalysis due to their strong localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). As this rapid-developing research area begun to raise and answer fundamental questions that determine the photocatalytic performance of plasmonic photocatalysts, it is an opportune time to evaluate the advancement and propose future trajectories. We first outline the fundamentals of LSPR, including its excitation, decay, and influencing factors. We then discuss three main enhancement mechanisms and their applicable scenarios for plasmonic photocatalysis. We then critically assess the recent works performed by our groups concerning plasmon-enhanced photocatalytic reactions. By introducing related works from other researchers, we demonstrate our contributions to the advancements of plasmonic photocatalysis. Finally, we discuss the current challenges and suggest future directions in three aspects: material development, mechanism exploration, and application extension. It is anticipated to delineate the state-of-the-art and direct future research in plasmon-enhanced value-added chemical transformations.

Highly efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution of graphene/YInO3 nanocomposites under visible light irradiation

Abstract:Visible-light-driven hydrogen evolution with high efficiency is important in the current photocatalysis research. Here we report for the first time the design and synthesis of a new graphene-semiconductor nanocomposite consisting of YInO3 nanoparticles and two-dimensional graphene sheets as efficient photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution under visible light irradiation. The graphene/YInO3 nanocomposites were synthesized using a facile solvothermal method in which the formation of graphene and the deposition of YInO3 nanoparticles on the graphene sheets can be achieved simultaneously. The addition of graphene as a cocatalyst can narrow the band gap of YInO3 to visible photon energy and prolong the separation and lifetime of electron-hole pairs by the chemical bonding between YInO3 and graphene. The photocatalytic reaction with this nanocomposite reaches a high H2 evolution rate of 400.4 μmol h(-1) g(-1) when the content of graphene is 0.5 wt%, over 127 and 3.7 times higher than that of pure YInO3 and Pt/YInO3, respectively. This work can provide an effective approach to the fabrication of graphene-based photocatalysts with high performance in the field of energy conversion.
One-Step Hydrothermal Synthesis of 2d Hexagonal Nanoplates of Alpha-Fe2o3/Graphene Composites with Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity

Abstract:There has been significant progress in the field of semiconductor photocatalysis, but it is still a challenge to fabricate low-cost and high-activity photocatalysts because of safety issues and non-secondary pollution to the environment. Here, 2D hexagonal nanoplates of -Fe2O3/graphene composites with relatively good distribution are synthesized for the first time using a simple, one-step, template-free, hydrothermal method that achieves the effective reduction of the graphene oxide (GO) to graphene and intimate and large contact interfaces of the -Fe2O3 nanoplates with graphene. The -Fe2O3/graphene composites showed significantly enhancement in the photocatalytic activity compared with the pure -Fe2O3 nanoplates. At an optimal ratio of 5 wt% graphene, 98% of Rhodamine (RhB) is decomposed with 20 min of irradiation, and the rate constant of the composites is almost four times higher than that of pure -Fe2O3 nanoplates. The decisive factors in improving the photocatalytic performance are the intimate and large contact interfaces between 2D hexagonal -Fe2O3 nanoplates and graphene, in addition to the high electron withdrawing/storing ability and the highconductivity of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) formed during the hydrothermal reaction. The effective charge transfer from -Fe2O3 nanoplates to graphene sheets is demonstrated by the significant weakening of photoluminescence in -Fe2O3/graphene composites.
Enhanced Visible-Light Photocatalytic Activity of Plasmonic Ag and Graphene Co-Modified Bi2WO6 Nanosheets.

Abstract:Photocatalytic degradation of pollutants in water has received much attention due to increasing environmental problems. In this study, a visible-light-driven plasmonic silver-graphene-bismuth tungsten (Ag-G-Bi2WO6) composite photocatalyst was prepared. Firstly, the graphite oxide (GO)-Bi2WO6 composite was prepared using a hydrothermal process, followed by a chemical reduction process using ethyl glycol (EG) as the reducing agent to form the G-Bi2WO6 composite. Then, Ag nanoparticles (NPs) were loaded onto the G-Bi2WO6 composite using a simple photochemical reduction process under xenon lamp irradiation to form the Ag-G-Bi2WO6 composite. The prepared samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherm, UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activities of the prepared samples were evaluated by the photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) aqueous solution at ambient temperature under visible-light irradiation. The results showed that the photocatalytic activity of Bi2WO6 was significantly enhanced by the loading of Ag and graphene. The high photocatalytic activity is attributed predominantly to the hybridization of the surface plasmonic resonance (SPR) effect of Ag NPs and the specific electronics effect of graphene on the Bi2WO6 surface, thus enhancing the generation and separation of photogenerated charge carriers of Bi2WO6. Meanwhile, the excellent adsorption capacity of graphene also contributes to the enhancement of photocatalytic activity. This work highlights the design and preparation of new photocatalysts using plasmonic Ag and graphene as cocatalyst.
Enhancing visible light responsive photocatalytic activity by decorating Mn-doped ZnO nanoparticles on graphene

Abstract:Novel visible-light-responsive Mn-doped ZnO/Graphene nanocomposite photocatalysts were synthesized using a facile single step solvothermal method. A range of techniques including X-Ray diffraction (XRD), a high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM), a transmission electron microscope (TEM), a scanning electron microscope (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FAR), Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET) surface area analyzer and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were employed to characterize the as-prepared composites. UV visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) was used to study the optical properties, which confirmed that the spectral responses of the nanocomposite catalysts were gradually extended to the visible-light region as Mn dosage increased. Fluorescence emission spectra verified that Mn-doped ZnO/Graphene nanocomposites possess enhanced charge separation capability compared to ZnO/Graphene, Mn-doped ZnO and pure ZnO. The photocatalytic activity was investigated by following the degradation of methylene blue (MB), a model dye under visible light irradiation. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) of textile wastewater was also measured before and after the photocatalysis experiment under sunlight to evaluate the mineralization of wastewater. The results demonstrated that Mndoped ZnO/Graphene nanocomposites efficiently bleached out the MB, showing an impressive photocatalytic enhancement over Mn-doped ZnO and pure ZnO samples. The enhanced activity of composite photocatalysts can be attributed to large adsorption by the dyes, enhanced visible light absorption and efficient charge separation and fast transfer processes. Abstract:Photocatalytic films are among the best candidates for practical applications because of their features of facile fixing and recycling. /Graphene Oxide (GO)/Ni surface plasma composite thin film catalyst was successfully prepared by a simple composite electrodeposition method. The photocatalytic (PC) activity and kinetic properties of the composite films for degradation of Rhodamine B, methyl orange, and Congo red were investigated under visible light. The photocatalysis mechanism was explored using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and addition of active species trapping agents into the reaction system. The results show that the /GO/Ni composite film prepared by the optimal process is composed of a small amount of GO and AgBr crystal with Ag nanoparticles on the surface. The composite film demonstrates outstanding surface plasmon resonance, excellent PC activity, and good catalytic stability. The degradation efficiency for Rhodamine B using /GO/Ni composite film is 1.35 times greater than that using /Ni film. The main reason for the improvement in the PC performance of the composite films is that the charge conductivity and PC reduction of dissolved oxygen of the films are greatly improved by the presence of GO.

Abstract:The enhancement effect of the plasmonic resonance of AuNPs and a graphene membrane on the optoelectronic properties of ZnO nanoflowers is investigated. A layered structure is fabricated, consisting of ZnO nanoflowers grown on a conductive fluorine‐doped tin oxide (FTO) glass substrate, decorated with gold nanoparticles, and covered by a multilayer graphene membrane. An excellent photocurrent response as high as 1650 A W−1 and a millisecond level response time are achieved. Compared with the pristine ZnO device, which has a responsivity of 2.98 A W−1 and a response time of tens of seconds, the photocurrent response is dramatically increased by 500‐fold and the response time is decreased by over 1000‐fold. The significant enhancement of the photocurrent can be attributed to the coupling of plasmonic resonance modes of AuNPs and the graphene membrane, according to finite‐difference time‐domain simulation results; whereas the tremendous improvement on response time can be attributed to the high electron mobility of graphene. The work is essential for further study of the plasmonic enhancement of ZnO optoelectronic performance and provides a new path for the fabrication of ZnO‐based high‐responsivity, high‐speed, and low‐cost ultraviolet emission and detection devices.
Graphene in Photocatalysis: A Review

Abstract:In recent years, heterogeneous photocatalysis has received much research interest because of its powerful potential applications in tackling many important energy and environmental challenges at a global level in an economically sustainable manner. Due to their unique optical, electrical, and physicochemical properties, various 2D graphene nanosheets-supported semiconductor composite photocatalysts have been widely constructed and applied in different photocatalytic fields. In this review, fundamental mechanisms of heterogeneous photocatalysis, including thermodynamic and kinetics requirements, are first systematically summarized. Then, the photocatalysis-related properties of graphene and its derivatives, and design rules and synthesis methods of graphene-based composites are highlighted. Importantly, different design strategies, including doping and sensitization of semiconductors by graphene, improving electrical conductivity of graphene, increasing eloectrocatalytic active sites on graphene, strengthening interface coupling between semiconductors and graphene, fabricating micro/nano architectures, constructing multi-junction nanocomposites, enhancing photostability of semiconductors, and utilizing the synergistic effect of various modification strategies, are thoroughly summarized. The important applications including photocatalytic pollutant degradation, H2 production, and CO2 reduction are also addressed. Through reviewing the significant advances on this topic, it may provide new opportunities for designing highly efficient 2D graphene-based photocatalysts for various applications in photocatalysis and other fields, such as solar cells, thermal catalysis, separation, and purification.

Abstract:Using sunlight as renewable resource has stimulated the development of sustainable photocatalysts that can collect visible light. Semiconductor nanowire-based photocatalysts have attracted increasing interest due to their unique optical, electronic, and structural advantages. Here, noble metal-semiconductor hybrid Au/ZnO nanowires have been fabricated by chemical vapor deposition method. The hybrid photocatalysts were well characterized by SEM, TEM, EDS, XRD, XPS, UV–visible spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Compared with ZnO nanowires, Au/ZnO heterostructures exhibited significantly enhanced photocatalytic performance due to the synergistic combination of Au and ZnO. Optical properties were modeled to support our interpretation of photocatalytic mechanisms. Our work provides a feasible strategy to prepare plasmonic photocatalysts and will also deepen the understanding of the plasmon enhanced photocatalytic performance in hybrid photocatalysts.

Abstract:The use of graphene to enhance the efficiency of photocatalysts has attracted much attention. This is because of the unique optical and electrical properties of the two-dimensional (2-D) material. This review is focused on the recent significant advances in the fabrication and applications of graphene-based hybrid photocatalysts. The synthetic strategies for the composite semiconductor photocatalysts are described. The applications of the new materials in the degradation of pollutants, photocatalytic hydrogen evolution and antibacterial systems are presented. The challenges and opportunities for the future development of graphene-based photocatalysts are also discussed.
Decoration of WO3 nanospheres with graphene nanotubes for enhancement of solar energy conversion applications

Abstract:Development of efficient materials for solar energy conversion is an urgent need for water treatment and photovoltaic applications. Herein we synthesized WO 3 /graphene composite by a facile microwave irradiation method. The as prepared WO 3 /graphene composite is characterized by various instrumentation techniques such as XRD, SEM, UV–Vis, PL, nitrogen adsorption/desorption. Characterization data demonstrated that graphene decorated WO 3 nanospheres generates nanostructure with reduced band gap energy (2.77 eV), rich porosity (28.89 nm) and substantial specific surface area (86.9 m 2 g −1 ). The photo catalytic performance of as synthesized composite was examined in the degradation of crystal violet (CV) under irradiation of sun light. Dye Sensitized Solar Cell (DSSC) was designed by using the prepared composite as photo anode and its solar energy conversion efficiency was evaluated. In all investigated cases, WO 3 /graphene hybrid composite established a superior compatibility (93%) to degrade the CV as well as superior anodic performance (PCE 11.19%) in DSSC's compared to their counterpart. The enhanced photon absorption, energy band restructuring and synergic effect are the main causes for the fabulous performance of photo catalytic and photo anodic properties. Thus, the WO 3 /graphene composite has the potential to be an efficient adoptable material for photo catalytic and DSSC applications.

Abstract:Inexpensive and non-toxic novel Fe2O3-Fe3O4 nano-composites supported by montmorillonite and modified by graphene were successfully synthesized using the liquid phase reduction hydrothermal method. The presence of montmorillonite reduced sizes of iron crystals, and the loading of graphene enhanced the separation efficiency and electron-conductivity of photo-induced electron-hole pairs. The methyl orange degradation experiment was made to investigate the photocatalysis performance of pure Fe2O3-Fe3O4, Fe2O3-Fe3O4-Montmorillonite and Fe2O3-Fe3O4-Montmorillonite-Graphene at the same condition. The absorption of nano-composites was a slight blue-shifted with a decreasing crystallite size of iron nano-particles, while it was clearly shifted toward longer wavelengths upon the modification using graphene. Fe2O3-Fe3O4-Montmorillonite-Graphene exhibited the excellent optical response and photocatalytic activity in visible region: the degradation rate of methyl orange reached 2.77 times faster than that of Fe2O3-Fe3O4 and 1.61 times faster than that of Fe2O3-Fe3O4 Montmorillonite within 30 min irradiation. Results implied that applications of montmorillonite helped to prevent agglomeration of iron nano-particles, and graphene helped to reduce the charge recombination rate, further validated an enhanced photocatalytic performance of Fe2O3-Fe3O4-Montmorillonite-Graphene superiorly. The current study shed new light on synergetic effects of the inexpensive and non-toxic iron oxide nano-photocatalyst with visible-light responsible and magnetic-active compositions, agglomeration-preventive nano-structures by montmorillonite and enhanced electron separation by graphene. Abstract:Graphene‐semiconductor nanocomposites, considered as a kind of most promising photocatalysts, have shown remarkable performance and drawn significant attention in the field of photo‐driven chemical conversion using solar energy, due to the unique physicochemical properties of graphene. The photocatalytic enhancement of graphene‐based nanocomposites is caused by the reduction of the recombination of electron‐hole pairs, the extension of the light absorption range, increase of absorption of light intensity, enhancement of surface active sites, and improvement of chemical stability of photocatalysts. Recent progress in the photocatalysis development of graphene‐based nanocomposites is highlighted and evaluated, focusing on the mechanism of graphene‐enhanced photocatalytic activity, the understanding of electron transport, and the applications of graphene‐based photocatalysts on water splitting, degradation or oxidization of organic contaminants, photoreduction of CO2 into renewable fuels, toxic elimination of heavy metal ions, and antibacterial applications.
Three-dimensional Porous Graphene-Co 3 O 4 Nanocomposites for High Performance Photocatalysts

Abstract:Novel three-dimensional porous graphene-Co 3 O 4 nanocomposites were synthesized by freeze-drying methods. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy revealed that the graphene formed a three-dimensional porous structure with Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles decorated surfaces. The as-obtained product showed high photocatalytic efficiency and could be easily separated from the reaction medium by magnetic decantation. This nanocomposite may be expected to have potential in water purification applications.
