Abstract:This study introduces an improved equivalent circuit coupled 3D thermal model, the Multi-Partition Heat Generation and Thermal Resistance (MPH-TR) Model, developed for cylindrical Lithium-Ion-Battery (LIB) cells to optimize battery thermal management with computational efficiency. The model offers detailed insights into temperature distributions within the jelly roll active material, crucial for assessing LIB cooling strategies. To develop the thermal model, a disassembly of the studied LIB cell is conducted, enabling the inclusion of cell components geometric data, electrical resistances and electrical insulation layers. By considering the detailed internal structure, the heat generation is separated between positive terminal and jelly roll. Additionally, the identified installed electrical insulation layers are simplified included as thermal resistances. The model's validity is shown through extensive comparison with experimental data across various operating conditions (pre-conditioning, fast charge, slow charge, dynamic electrical cycle), demonstrating good agreement with root-mean-square errors (RMSE) below 0.8 K at all three measurement positions (cell mantle, positive and negative terminal). Compared to the state-of-the-art cylindrical approach, the MPH-TR model exhibited improved accuracy and provided deeper insights into the temperature distribution within the jelly roll. Furthermore, this study validated similar thermal behavior across multiple cells of the same LIB type, enabling upscaling of single cell models for LIB module or pack simulations.
