Abstract:The aim of this critical review is i) to summarize the occurrence of Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in landfills; ii) to outline the environmental fate and transport of PFASs in landfills; iii) to compare the treatment technologies of PFASs in landfill leachate and remediation methods of PFASs in surrounding groundwater; iv) to identify the research gaps and suggest future research directions. In recent years, PFASs have been detected in landfills around the world, among which Perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) especially Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) are mostly studied due to their long-term stability. Short-chain PFASs (<8 carbons) are more common than long-chain PFASs (≧8 carbons) in landfill leachate. PFASs in landfill leachate are eventually transported to the surrounding groundwater, surface water and soil. Some PFASs evaporate from landfills to the ambient air. To avoid the environmental and health risks of PFASs in landfills, new technologies and combined use of existing technologies have been implemented to treat PFASs in landfill leachate. Integrated remediation methods are applied to control the diffusion of PFASs in groundwater surrounding landfills. In future, the mechanisms of PFAAs precursors degradation, the correlation among PFASs in different environmental media around landfills, as well as the environmental behavior and toxic effect of combined pollutants together with PFASs in landfill leachate and surrounding groundwater should be studied.

Abstract:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent organic pollutants (POPs) that pose significant environmental and human health risks. The presence of PFAS in landfill leachate is becoming an increasingly concerning issue. This article presents a comprehensive review of current knowledge and research gaps in monitoring and removing PFAS from landfill leachate. The focus is on evaluating the effectiveness and sustainability of existing removal technologies, and identifying areas where further research is needed. To achieve this goal, the paper examines the existing technologies for monitoring and treating PFAS in landfill leachate. The review emphasizes the importance of sample preparation techniques and quality assurance/quality control measures in ensuring accurate and reliable results. Then, this paper reviewed the existing technologies for removal and remediation of PFAS in landfill leachates, such as adsorption, membrane filtration, photocatalytic oxidation, electrocatalysis, biodegradation, and constructed wetlands. Additionally, the paper summarizes the factors that exhibit the performance of various treatment technologies: reaction time, experimental conditions, and removal rates. Furthermore, the paper evaluates the potential application of different remediation technologies (i.e., adsorption, membrane filtration, photocatalytic oxidation, electrocatalysis, biodegradation, and constructed wetlands, etc.) in treating landfill leachate containing PFAS and its precursors, such as fluorotelomeres like FTOH and FTSs. The review highlights the importance of considering economic, technical, and environmental factors when selecting control measures. Overall, this article aims to provide guidance for promoting environmental protection and sustainable development in the context of PFAS contamination in landfill leachate.

Abstract:A critical review of existing publications is presented i) to summarize the occurrence of various classes of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) and their sources in landfills, ii) to identify temporal and geographical trends of PFASs in landfills; iii) to delineate the factors affecting PFASs in landfills; and iv) to identify research gaps and future research directions. Studies have shown that perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) are routinely detected in landfill leachate, with short chain (C4-C7) PFAAs being most abundant, possibly indicating their greater mobility, and reflecting the industrial shift towards shorter-chain compounds. Despite its restricted use, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) remains one of the most abundant PFAAs in landfill leachates. Recent studies have also documented the presence of PFAA-precursors (e.g., saturated and unsaturated fluorotelomer carboxylic acids) in landfill leachates at concentrations comparable to, or higher than, the most frequently detected PFAAs. Landfill ambient air also contains elevated concentrations of PFASs, primarily semi-volatile precursors (e.g., fluorotelomer alcohols) compared to upwind control sites, suggesting that landfills are potential sources of atmospheric PFASs. The fate of PFASs inside landfills is controlled by a combination of biological and abiotic processes, with biodegradation releasing most of the PFASs from landfilled waste to leachate. Biodegradation in simulated anaerobic reactors has been found to be closely related to the methanogenic phase. The methane-yielding stage also results in higher pH (>7) of leachates, correlated with higher mobility of PFAAs. Little information exists regarding PFAA-precursors in landfills. To avoid significant underestimation of the total PFAS released from landfills, PFAA-precursors and their degradation products should be determined in future studies. Owing to the semi-volatile nature of some precursor compounds and their degradation products, future studies also need to include landfill gas to clarify degradation pathways and the overall fate of PFASs.

Abstract:Leachate is a substantial reservoir of per - and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) within the environment. However, comprehensive information on the occurrence and fate of PFASs in leachate, particularly in semi-arid and moderate-elevation regions where PFASs may aggregate, is lacking. Here, 13 legacy PFASs were investigated in leachate from landfills and an incineration plant in such area. PFASs concentrations ranged from 6063 to 43,161 ng·L −1 in raw leachate, influenced by leachate origin, climate, wastewater disposal, and especially bacterial communities. Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes were enriched in raw leachate, while Proteobacteria dominated during leachate treatment processes, possibly due to PFASs selection pressure. In addition, top 20 biomarkers indicated the potential of these bacterial indicators for PFASs detection. Tracing analysis also suggested that PFASs in groundwater may have originated from leachate and effluent from wastewater treatment plants. PFASs levels in groundwater showed a significant correlation with the presence of Brevundimonas , Leptothrix , Malikia , and Sphaerotilus . The pathogenic bacterium Brevundimonas suggested potential human health risks, while Leptothrix , Malikia , and Sphaerotilus may serve as indicators of groundwater contamination. This study is believed to provide insights into how to prevent and control PFASs-related environmental pollution.

Abstract:Leachate from landfills can be a significant challenge to manage and treat due to conventional contaminants. The addition of emerging contaminants such as per- and polyfluorinatedalkyl substances (PFASs) makes treatment even more complex. PFASs enter landfills through consumer waste and have been detected in landfill leachates at varying concentrations. The design and decision-making on leachate treatment require essential information since it depends on local factors, e.g. climate, proximity to wastewater treatment plants, and waste type. This study conducted a survey on actively operated public municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills in the Eastern and Northwestern regions of the US to understand the current leachate treatment practices and views from public MSW landfill managers on PFAS treatment. The survey aims to explore the possible adaptations from the industry to the pending regulatory guidelines for the potential PFASs treatment. Results show the majority of the landfills are currently using off-site disposal (72% of the responses), followed by complete onsite treatment (18% of the responses) and pre-treatment onsite and off-site disposal methods (10% of the responses). The factors that guided the selection of treatment methods included climate, economics, and future regulations. Evaporation and recirculation were the most prevalent onsite treatment technologies for public landfills, which reduced the leachate quantity for treatment. The public landfills expressed awareness of the potential impact of PFASs on the changes in leachate treatment. The current state-level regulation, potential federal PFAS regulation, and treatment costs are raising awareness of the onsite treatment for PFASs. The results of this study will benefit the improvement of PFAS awareness and provide critical information that will directly affect the leachate treatment process for PFASs.Implications: This study presents a survey on the current leachate treatment process in the public municipal solid waste landfills in the eastern and northwestern U.S. and their potential process improvement on the impact of PFASs. This study is relevant to the topic of the JA&WMA because the research falls directly within the scope of this journal, and it documents the leachate treatment of landfills, and the results of this study will immediately contribute to our understanding of the waste treatment, benefiting the improvement of PFASs awareness, and providing critical information that will directly affect the leachate treatment process.

Abstract:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have become a crucial environmental concern owing to their exceptional persistence, ability to bioaccumulate within ecosystems, and potential to adversely affect biota. Products and materials containing PFASs are usually discarded into municipal solid waste (MSW) at the end of their life cycle, and the fate of PFASs may differ when different disposal methods of MSWs are employed. To date, limited research has focus on the occurrence, behaviors, and fate of PFASs emitted from various MSW disposal sites. This knowledge gap may lead to an underestimation of the contribution of MSW disposal sites as a source of PFASs in the environment. In this review, we collated publications concerning PFASs from typical MSW disposal sites (i.e., landfills, incineration plants, and composting facilities) and explored the occurrence patterns and behaviors of PFASs across various media (e.g., landfill leachate/ambient air, incineration plant leachate/ash, and compost products) in these typical MSW disposal sites. In particular, this review highlighted ultrashort-chain perfluoroalkyl acids and "unknown"/emerging PFASs. Additionally, it meticulously elucidated the use of non-specific techniques and non-target analysis for screening and identifying these overlooked PFASs. Furthermore, the composition profiles, mass loads, and ecological risks of PFASs were compared across the three typical disposal methods. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first review regarding the occurrence, behaviors, and fate of PFASs in typical MSW disposal sites on a global scale, which can help shed light on the potential environmental impacts of PFASs harbored in MSWs and guide future waste management practices.

Abstract:The transport of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from landfill leachate to surrounding soil and groundwater poses a threat to human health via the food chain or drinking water. Studies have shown that the transport process of PFAS from the solid to liquid phase in the environment is significantly affected by dissolved organic matter (DOM) adsorption. However, the mechanism of PFAS release from landfill solids into leachate and its transport to the surrounding groundwater remains unclear. In this study, we identified the composition of PFAS and DOM components and analyzed the association between DOM components, physicochemical factors, and PFAS concentrations in landfill leachate and groundwater. This study demonstrated that the frequency of PFAS detection in the samples was 100%, and the PFAS concentrations in leachate were greater than in the groundwater samples. Physicochemical factors, such as ammonium-nitrogen (NH4+-N), sodium (Na), calcium (Ca), DOM components C4 (macromolecular humic acid), SUVA254 (aromatic component content), and A240-400 (humification degree and molecular weight), were strongly correlated with PFAS concentrations. In conclusion, PFAS environmental risk management should be enhanced in landfills, especially in closed landfills, or landfills that are scheduled to close in the near future.

Abstract:Organics found in landfill leachate (humic acids, fulvic acids, and hydrophilic fraction) have a solid ability to absorb ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which negatively affects UV disinfection; leachate ultraviolet quenching substances (UVQS) can, therefore, have a significant impact on the cotreatment of landfill leachate and sewage in wastewater treatment plants. On the other hand, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), which pose potential risks to the environment and human health, commonly exist in landfill leachate due to their wide application in various industrial and consumer products. Therefore, removing UVQS and PFAS from landfill leachate is crucial. In this work, the advances in removing UVQS and PFAS from landfill leachate in the last decade are reviewed to find a standard treatment for both contaminants to lower the costs and space required for the leachate treatment process. The benefits and drawbacks of biological, physical, chemical, and electrochemical treatments were examined. Physical, chemical, and electrochemical treatments showed advantages over biological treatments but higher energy and/or material costs. The global analysis indicated that similar technologies, such as adsorption or osmosis, can be used as effective methods to remove UVQS and PFAS from landfill leachate and suggested that both types of pollutants could be eliminated simultaneously with a single treatment based on one of these two technologies.
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in landfill leachate: patterns, time trends, and sources

Abstract:Concentrations and isomer profiles for 24 per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) were monitored over 5 months (February-June, 2010) in municipal landfill leachate. These data were used to assess the role of perfluoroalkyl acid (PFAA) precursor degradation on changes in PFAA concentrations over time. The influence of total organic carbon, total suspended solids, pH, electrical conductivity (EC), leachate flow rates, and meteorological data (precipitation, air temperature) on leachate PFAS concentrations was also investigated. Perfluoropentanoate and perfluorohexanoate were typically the dominant PFASs in leachate, except for March-April, when concentrations of perfluorooctane sulfonate, perfluorooctanoate, and numerous PFAA-precursors (i.e., (N-alkyl) perfluorooctane sulfonamides and fluorotelomer carboxylic acids) increased by a factor of 2-10 (~4 μg/L to ~36 μg/L ΣPFASs). During this time, isomer profiles of PFOA became increasingly dominated by the linear isomer, likely from transformation of linear, telomer-manufactured precursors. While ΣPFAA-precursors accounted for up to 71% of ΣPFASs (molar basis) in leachate from this site, leachate from a second landfill displayed only low concentrations of precursors (<1% of ΣPFASs). Overall, degradation of PFAA-precursors and changes in leachate pH, EC, and 24-h precipitation were important factors controlling PFAS occurrence in leachate. Finally, 8.5-25 kg/yr (mean 16 kg/yr) of ΣPFASs was estimated to leave the landfill via leachate for subsequent treatment at a wastewater treatment plant.
Interaction and coexistence characteristics of dissolved organic matter and toxic metals with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in landfill leachate

Abstract:Landfill leachate-containing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) is both an important 'sink' and a 'source' of secondary pollution, posing serious threaten to surrounding environments. To date, the pollution characteristics of PFAS in landfill leachate, and the coexistence and interaction between PFAS and other leachate contaminants, such as dissolved organic matter (DOM) and toxic metals remains unclear. Herein, our results showed that 17 target PFAS, with concentrations ranged from 1804 to 43309 ng/L, were detected in landfill leachates. The main PFAS were short-chain and even-chain substances represented by perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA) and perfluorobutane sulfonic acid (PFBS). Leachate derived DOM is mainly composed of protein-like and humic-like substance, among which the total contribution of protein-like substance is as high as 73.7%. Correlation analysis results showed that the distribution of PFAS was strongly correlated with the substituted functional groups (e.g., carboxyl and hydroxyl) on the aromatic ring of humic-like substance (C2 and E253/E203) and autochthonous metabolism by microbial activities (FI). Furthermore, Mn element showed a significantly strong correlation with PFAS. Both organic and inorganic substances positively correlated with toxic metals. Our findings are helpful to understand the environmental fate of PFAS, and contribute to decision-making regarding DOM, toxic metals, and PFAS management in landfill.

Abstract:AbstractLandfill leachate has been documented as a significant source of trace organic pollutants, comprising an expansive family of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). This study presents the findings on the distribution of 13 perfluoroalkyl carboxylates (PFCAs) and 4 perfluoroalkyl sulfonates (PFSAs) in leachates from 6 municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills in western China. The total concentrations of 17 PFAS in sampled leachates ranged from 1805 to 43,310 ng/L, and 15 compounds were detected in all samples. The short-chain compounds perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS, mean mass fraction 23.1%) and perfluorobutyric acid (PFBA, mean mass fraction 20.6%) were dominant. There were higher PFAS concentrations in leachates from operating landfills (mean: 12,194 ng/L) compared to closed landfills (mean: 2747 ng/L), but there was no significant difference between young (< 10 years) and old landfills (> 10 years). Moderate to weak correlations were observed between PFAS concentrations and leachate properties, e.g., TN, NH4+-N, TOC, and pH. This is the first report on the distribution of PFAS in landfill leachates from western China. The results have identified landfill leachate as an underestimated source of PFAS in the environment and have contributed to a more comprehensive evaluation on PFAS presence across China.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Municipal solid wastes (MSWs) contain diverse per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), and these substances may leach into leachates, resulting in potential threats to the environment and human health. In this study, leachates from incineration plants with on-site treatment systems were measured for 17 PFAS species, including 13 perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs) and 4 perfluorosulfonic acids (PFSAs). PFAS were detected in all of the raw leachates and finished effluents in concentrations ranging from 7228 to 16,565 ng L −1 and 43 to 184 ng L −1 , respectively, with a greater contribution from the short-chain PFAS and PFCAs. The results showed that the existing combined processes (biological treatment and membrane filtration) were effective in decreasing PFAS in the aqueous phase with removal efficiencies over 95%. In addition, correlation analysis suggested that physical entrapment, not biodegradation, was the main means of PFAS reduction in the treatment system. These results filled a gap in the understanding of PFAS occurrence and removal in leachates from incineration plants during the full-scale treatment processes, and demonstrated those leachates were previously under-explored sources of PFAS.

Abstract:Landfills and wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) are point sources for many emerging contaminants, including microplastics and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Previous studies have estimated the abundance and transport of microplastics and PFAS separately in landfills and WWTPs. In addition, previous studies typically report concentrations of microplastics as particle count/L or count/g sediment, which do not provide the information needed to calculate mass balances. We measured microplastics and PFAS in four landfill-WWTP systems in Illinois, USA, and quantified mass of both contaminants in landfill leachate, WWTP influent, effluent, and biosolids. Microplastic concentrations in WWTP influent were similar in magnitude to landfill leachates, in the order of 102 μg plastic/L (parts-per-billion). In contrast, PFAS concentrations were higher in leachates (parts-per-billion range) than WWTP influent (parts-per-trillion range). After treatment, both contaminants had lower concentrations in WWTP effluent, although were abundant in biosolids. We concluded that WWTPs reduce PFAS and microplastics, lowering concentrations in the effluent that is discharged to nearby surface waters. However, partitioning of both contaminants to biosolids may reintroduce them as pollutants when biosolids are landfilled or used as fertilizer.

This critical review presents the latest information on emission sources, global distribution, international regulations, analytical methods, and remediation technologies for PFAS in sludge and biosolids from wastewater treatment plants. PFAS concentrations in sludge matrices are typically in hundreds of ng/g dry weight (dw) in developed countries but are rarely reported in developing and least-developed countries due to the limited analytical capability. In comparison to water samples, efficient extraction and cleaning procedures are crucial for PFAS detection in sludge samples. While regulations on PFAS have mainly focused on soil due to biosolids reuse, only two countries have set limits on PFAS in sludge or biosolids with a maximum of 100 ng/g dw for major PFAS. Biological technologies using microbes and enzymes present in sludge are considered as having high potential for PFAS remediation, as they are eco-friendly, low-cost, and promising. By contrast, physical/chemical methods are either energy-intensive or linked to further challenges with PFAS contamination and disposal. The findings of this review deepen our comprehension of PFAS in sludge and have guided future research recommendations.

Abstract:Landfill leachate is often an important source of emerging organic contaminants including perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) requiring proper treatment to protect surface water and groundwater resources. This study investigated the occurrence of PFASs in the leachate of a capped landfill site in Singapore and the efficacy of PFASs removal during flow through a constructed wetland (CW) treatment system. The CW treatment system consists of equalization tank, aeration lagoons, sedimentation tank, reed beds and polishing ponds. Target compounds included 11 perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) (7 perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs) and 4 perfluoroalkane sulfonates (PFSAs)) and 7 PFAA precursors. Although total PFASs concentrations in the leachate varied widely (1269 to 7661 ng/L) over the one-year sampling period, the PFASs composition remained relatively stable with PFCAs consistently being predominant (64.0 ± 3.8%). Perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS) concentrations were highly correlated with total PFASs concentrations and could be an indicator for the release of PFASs from this landfill. The release of short-chain PFAAs strongly depended on precipitation whereas concentrations of the other PFASs appeared to be controlled by partitioning. Overall, the CW treatment system removed 61% of total PFASs and 50-96% of individual PFASs. PFAAs were removed most efficiently in the reed bed (42-49%), likely due to the combination of sorption to soils and sediments and plant uptake, whereas most of the PFAA precursors (i.e. 5:3 fluorotelomer carboxylate (5:3 acid), N-substituted perfluorooctane sulfonamides (N-MeFOSAA and N-EtFOSAA)) were removed in the aeration lagoon (>55%) by biodegradation. The sedimentation tank and polishing ponds were relatively inefficient, with only 7% PFASs removal.

Abstract:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have attracted extensive attention because of their persistence, long-distance migration ability, bioaccumulation, and biological toxicity. Currently, regulatory strategies concerning PFASs in the environment primarily focus on perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs). However, most polyfluoroalkyl compounds can be degraded to PFAAs by environmental microorganisms, also known as precursors. Exploring the microbial transformation behavior of precursors is fundamental to comprehensively evaluate the environmental risk of PFASs and formulate control and remediation schemes of PFAS-contaminated sites. Furthermore, anaerobic microbial reductive defluorination of PFAAs is a potential and challenging remediation technology. This review summarizes degradation rules and transformation pathways of precursors (fluorotelomer compounds and perfluorooctane sulfonamide derivatives), PFAAs, and novel PFASs by microorganisms and discusses factors affecting the microbial degradation. Finally, the future research directions are put forward.

Abstract:Landfill leachate poses significant risks to the environment and human health if not managed properly due to its potential to contaminate soil, ground, and surface waters. Consequently, effluent standards for landfill leachate have been continuously reviewed to manage these risks. A combination of treatment techniques (e.g., physico-chemical and biological) are usually required to treat landfill leachate due to its complexity, variability, and potentially high concentrations of pollutants. This review considers the various types of techniques used to treat landfill leachate/leachate concentrate, including advanced oxidation process (AOP), membrane bioreactor, denitrification, biofilm reactors, and electrocoagulation. The occurrence and treatment of emerging contaminants in landfill leachate, and opportunities for development are also considered. The review covers the basic principles through to the latest developments in research, including the effectiveness of engineering applications, their economic and technical challenges, together with current gaps in the knowledge and the prospects for leachate treatment. A systematic review of the technical characteristics of the engineering applications, used in leachate membrane concentrate treatment, showed that low-energy direct heat transfer evaporation technology had good prospects for future development. Refractory organic compounds, high concentrations of ammonia, high salinity, and concentrated leachate were of high concern. Hence, extensive research has been conducted on the degradation of refractory organic compounds using various AOPs, and the denitrification of ammonia species by novel biological pathways (e.g., anaerobic ammonium oxidation, short-cut denitrification processes). Despite the significant number of promising laboratory scale applications, further research is needed to demonstrate their effectiveness on a commercial/large scale.

Abstract:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), known for their persistent toxicity and mobility, pose significant environmental and human health risks. Here we explored the occurrence and efficacy of on-site Double-Pass Reverse Osmosis (DTRO) systems in removing 30 different PFAS from landfill leachates in 11 diverse cities across China. PFAS concentrations in landfill leachate ranged from 938 to 32,491 ng/L, averaging 6,486 ng/L, predominantly comprising short-chain PFAS, notably perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS). Notable emerging substitutes like 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonate, fluorobutane sulfonamide, and 9-chlorohexadecafluoro-3-oxanone sulfonate were also identified. The PFAS levels correlated positively (r2 = 0.79, p < 0.01) with regional economic development, with coastal areas exhibiting higher concentrations than inland regions. The DTRO membrane filtration and ion exchange resin achieved an average removal efficiency of 94 % for ∑30PFAS and even 99.97 % for PFBS (the concentration of PFBS in the raw leachate ranged from 226.36 ng/L to 27,935.61 ng/L, with an average concentration of 4,506.88 ng/L). The Na ion exchange resin had a limited effect on further reducing the PFAS concentration. Our findings not only contribute to the theoretical understanding of PFAS behavior in landfill leachates but also offer a practical engineering applications for global waste management practices.
