Abstract:Culture consists of shared conceptual representations in an individual's cognition. Thus, there may be cultural differences in the representation of a concept. To assess this possibility, we compared the subjective semantic structure of "privacy" in Iran and the United States. Participants were 200 adults, 100 from Iran and 100 from the United States. In the first phase of the experiment, using the associative terms task, we detected nine of the most frequent terms that were associated with the concept of "privacy" in each culture. In the second phase, using the judged-similarity task, we asked participants to rate the degree to which each of the nine terms from the previous phase was associated with every other term and with the concept of "privacy." Results from a correspondence analysis model suggest similarities in the mapping of terms related to "privacy" along the dichotomous dimension of physical vs. informational concerns. However, cultural differences emerged in a second dimension, the extent to which individualism vs. collectivism was stressed. While "personal privacy" and an individual's relationship with the government was important for American adults, the main focus for Iranian adults was "familial privacy" and family-centered living.
Investigation of Ethnocentrism Effect on Turkish Textile Image and Consumer Purchase Intention: Isfahan and Tabriz Cities as a Case Study

Abstract:Cultural factors such as ethnocentrism and cultural stereotypes also play a prominent role in consumers' perceptions of brands. This paper examines the impact of ethnocentrism on the image of Turkish textiles and the purchase intention of these goods among Isfahan and Tabriz citizens. The population of this research is residents of Isfahan and Tabriz cities. This study's hypotheses are examined using structural equation modelling through PLS software. The results showed that ethnocentrism has a significant relationship with the product image, but these results were inconsistent in Isfahan and Tabriz cities. On the other hand, the relationship between ethnocentrism and the cognitive image was confirmed. However, the result was not approved for the affective image in both cities either.

Abstract:The relevance of the topic of the study is caused by the traditional perception of animosity between the citizens of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Arab states due to historical and religious factors, as well as the statements of the political elites. The purpose of this study is to reveal the real mutual perception of Iranians and Arabs. In the context of the epidemiological situation in the world and the limitations of fi research, the sociological surveys and forums posted on the Internet on this topic are of top interest. The authors rely on a comparative approach in their study. On the basis of this research, aspects of contradictions and solidarity of the parties on a number of issues have been established. In addition, it has been confi that there is little or no antipathy towards one another among ordinary citizens of the Arab and Persian worlds, although the Arab side has a slightly more negative attitude.

Abstract:This study aimed to analyze the major social obstacles affecting the human resource development (HRD) in Iran. The study population included faculty members in Yazd province, Iran (N = 280, n = 162). A survey and a researcher-made questionnaire were used to collect data. The reliability of the questionnaire was confirmed by using Cronbach’s alpha (0.88) and its validity was approved by a panel of experts. The results indicated that the major social obstacles affecting HRD are ‘an increase in the share of foreigners in the labor market’, ‘frustration of native graduates’ and ‘local brain drain’, respectively. Furthermore, the results of exploratory factor analysis indicated that the most important social obstacles affecting HRD can be summarized into six factors including migration, lack of nativism, inclination towards foreigners, gender imbalance, lack of justice in distribution of resources, and lack of meritocracy. These factors altogether could explain 65.45% of the total variance. In the end, some applied recommendations (such as paying more attention to rural youth, fair distribution of facilities towards urban and rural balance, supporting native elites, preference for employment, and applying indigenous peoples based on meritocracy, creating favorable balance at different levels of academic education, avoiding gender inequality) have been presented.

Abstract:Purpose Consumer behavior will become more heterogeneous because of cultural differences. This phenomenon makes it increasingly important to understand values of national cultures and their impact on consumer behavior. The purpose of this paper is to review cultural factors with a focus on religious factors that influence the Iranian consumers' behavior during evaluation of luxury value dimensions. Design/methodology/approach Hofstede's model of national culture and research papers pertaining to religious influence on consumer behavior are applied to understand consumers' behavior toward luxury consumption in Iran as an Islamic country. Findings Findings support the notion that there are cultural differences between consumers in evaluating luxury value dimensions. As the study is about Iranian Muslim consumers, the role of religion in consumer behavior has also been debated. These findings are useful for domestic and international marketers toward a better understanding of Iranian consumers' luxury value perception based on cultural aspects. Practical implications The research outcomes should assist industry and business practitioners to understand the behavior of Iranian consumers and by using the findings formulate strategies that enhance their competitiveness in the market. Similarly, the research should enrich marketing literature by providing empirical evidence on Iranian consumption behavior from the perspective of the Muslim population. Research provides a better understanding of cultural factors that affect Iranian consumer behavior toward luxury value perception. Originality/value This is the first academic study analyzing the dimensions of luxury values, including the consideration of cultural and religious factors that influence Iranian's consumer behavior. The results can be seen as the first step for domestic and international marketers toward a better understanding of Iranian consumers' luxury value evaluation.

Abstract:The actualization of religious tolerance is a standard of consideration consistent concept of humans towards mutual respect of other religions by living together without mixing beliefs. This research uses a qualitative case study approach through observation, interview and documentation. The supporting factor for the actualization of the value of tolerance is the goal orientation of each school member, including the principles of wholeness, unity, humanism, and socialism. While the inhibiting factors are based on experience and basic understanding related to religious differences which are influenced by: (1) character and personality, (2) psychological development, (3) parenting pattern, (4) lack of religious teaching, (5) the surrounding environment and culture, and (6) previously established social relations.

Abstract:Background: This study aims to explore the experiences of Behvarzes regarding the reasons behind the insufficient participation of some individuals with the preventive protocols established during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A qualitative study was conducted from July 2021 to December 2022 using the conventional content analysis method. Purposive sampling was employed to select 14 Behvarzes working in villages covered by Kashan University of Medical Sciences. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth individual interviews and analyzed using conventional content analysis. Results: The study identified seven subcategories which were grouped into two main categories of reasons for inadequate compliance with health protocols by some individuals. These include: (1) Intentional non-compliance with preventive protocols, with the following subcategories: perceived obligation and adherence to social customs, denial of risk, belief in external health locus of control, and fear and distrust of prevention and treatment methods. (2) Unintentional non-compliance with preventive protocols, with the following subcategories: insufficient or contradictory information, negligence, and inevitability. Conclusion: The findings suggest that ensuring compliance with health guidelines is not a one-size-fits-all approach. providing empowerment and obstacle removal solutions to those forced to violate preventive protocols for various reasons are all critical components of successful interventions. Also, cultural familiarity can aid in the design of appropriate interventions to address these challenges.

Abstract:One of the major aspects of intercultural communication competence is intercultural sensitivity which is gaining increasing attention in different disciplines. Intercultural sensitivity is important because it reduces cultural barriers between people interacting from different cultures. This paper focuses on the importance of intercultural sensitivity and shares the results of a comparative study on the intercultural sensitivity among two countries of Iran and China. For this purpose, 40 Iranian and 40 Chinese male and female undergraduate Business English students completed the intercultural sensitivity questionnaire comprising five factors with 24 items developed by Chen and Starosta (2000). The results showed that in all five dimensions of the intercultural sensitivity including “Interaction Engagement”, “Respect for Cultural Differences”, “Interaction Confidence”, “Interaction Enjoyment”, and “Interaction Attentiveness”, Iranian participants had greater scores compared to Chinese participants. For both countries by increasing the age, the scores of all five dimensions of intercultural sensitivity increased too. Also, the results indicated that both Iranian and Chinese male participants had greater level of intercultural sensitivity in dimensions of “Interaction Engagement”, “Respect for Cultural Differences”, and “”Interaction Confidence” compared to female ones. However, gender did not have any impact on two intercultural sensitivity dimensions of “Interaction Enjoyment” and “Interaction Attentiveness”.

Abstract:Audio-visual or film is one of the strategic means of intercultural communication. Films are often used as a medium of propaganda for partisan and partial political interests, leading to misunderstandings of a culture. The destruction of a nation's cultural meanings and values always involves audio-visual media to create psychological effects in building opinion and mobilizing the masses. Iran and its culture are the victims of world misunderstanding. However, the films directed by Iranian filmmakers have opened a ‘cultural dialogue’ with dignity and in an artistic manner. This study aimed to examine Iranian cultural communication patterns through cinema and identify Iranian cultural symbols that influence cultural communication. This research used Symbol and Value Theory. Symbols and values influence political and cultural campaigns. This research employed the Gestalt method that involved descriptive coding of sentences and images and recording of contents. Through Gestalt, we can interpret the meaning and behavior displayed by humans in certain situations. The films ‘Children of Heaven’, ‘Color of Paradise,’ and ‘Baran' directed by Majid Majidi, communicate essential aspects of Iranian culture, showing the spirit of resilience of Iranian society today, which is rarely included in the news due to global politics. The representation of Iranian culture is presented in very natural and simple ways without using visual effects. The reproduction of Iranian culture in the three films above uses a measured, intense, and substantive approach and shooting angle. The spirit of Sufism was reflected in the production process and the Iranian cinematic contents.

Examining Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions in Iranian and Chinese Context: A Mixed Methods Approach

Abstract:This study investigated key cultural value dimensions in samples of undergraduate business students from Iran (n = 40) and China (n = 40). Hofstede’s national culture framework spans Power Distance, Individualism/Collectivism, Uncertainty Avoidance, and Masculinity/Femininity. A survey measured and compared cultural dimension scores between countries. Classroom observations also qualitatively assessed how societal norms shape teaching and learning. Results showed that Iranians accepted greater power inequality, showed more discomfort with unstructured situations, and were more individualist than the strongly collectivist Chinese sample. Both countries were distinctly masculine. Observation data reflected high Power Distance and Uncertainty Avoidance in Iranian classrooms, with professors tightly controlling discourse and censoring student opinions. Chinese classrooms demonstrated more collaboration and student debate. Findings update Hofstede’s country rankings with generational data. Insights can inform educational reforms catering teaching practices to cultural orientations while developing needed competencies. Limitations include sample size and generalizability. Further cross-cultural research should track evolving youth attitudes, translate macro-culture into micro-domains like academia, and leverage understanding to optimize learning systems. This mixed methodology comparing Iranian and Chinese university students on cultural dimensions and academic manifestations makes a novel contribution. Practical implications span cross-cultural understanding, organizational leadership, policy, and culture-specific social initiatives.

The Effects of Subjective Socioeconomic Status and Social Capital on Self-rated Health and Perceived Quality of Life: A Cross-sectional Survey-based Study in a Minority Group in Iran

Abstract:Objectives: The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of subjective socioeconomic status and social capital on self-rated health and quality of life among a minority group in Iran. Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 800 individuals from a minority group in Iran. The sampling method was clustering, and data collection was conducted using a questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using SPSS version and Stata version 8. Results: The results of logistic regression analysis revealed that subjective socioeconomic status (odds ratio [OR], 1.47; 95% CI, 1.34-1.61), belonging and empathy (OR, 1.09; 95% CI, 1.03-1.15), and trust (OR, 1.06; 95% CI, 1.00-1.13) significantly impacted the quality of life. Additionally, the logistic regression analysis for factors influencing self-rated health demonstrated significant effects for the age group of 31-50 years (OR, 0.59; 95% CI, 0.38-0.91), gender (OR, 0.65; 95% CI, 0.46-0.92), academic education (OR, 2.00; 95% CI, 1.22-3.26), subjective socioeconomic status (OR, 1.27; 95% CI, 1.16-1.38), chronic disease (OR, 4.52; 95% CI, 2.49-8.19), belonging and empathy (OR, 1.06; 95% CI, 1.01-1.11), and participation (OR, 1.11; 95% CI, 1.00-1.24). Conclusions: The findings indicate that bonding social capital significantly influences health levels and quality of life. Focusing on delegating local responsibilities to community members and striving to promote participation in health programs, along with increasing the socioeconomic status of minority groups, can effectively improve their health and quality of life.

Abstract:This study investigated whether online communication among learners from different cultural backgrounds mediates Iranian EFL learners' intercultural sensitivity (IS) development. To this end, two experimental and one control groups, and a group of intercultural speakers participated in the study. Each Iranian group consisted of 15 EFL learners who were university students majoring in English language and Literature at upper-intermediate and advanced levels of proficiency. The intercultural group consisted of 4 non-native English speakers of differing cultural backgrounds. The first experimental group engaged in intercultural discussions with intercultural speakers, while the second experimental group took part in in-person cultural discussions with their peers. Learners in the control group discussed general topics with their peers. Intercultural Sensitivity Scale (ISS) was used to evaluate IS of the participants prior and after the completion of the study. Findings revealed the outperformance of the first experimental group in IS. However, no significant difference was found between the control and second experimental groups in their interaction engagement, interaction confidence, and interaction attentiveness. Implications of the study are discussed in the paper.

Abstract:The present article is based on an international study on meaning-making coping aimed at understanding the role of culture in coping. The larger study has been conducted among cancer patients in 10 countries. The present article is confined to the results obtained in our study in Iran and restricted to religious coping methods. Twenty-seven participants with various kinds of cancer were interviewed. The several religious coping methods found in the present study are categorised on the basis of RCOPE’s five basic religious functions. The study reveals, among others, the impact of cultural beliefs on certain religious coping methods, even among those who are not regarded as practicing Muslims. The study highlights the importance of investigating cultural and social context when exploring the use of the meaning-making coping strategies in different countries.
Temporary Marriage: Attitude and Tendency in Iran

Abstract:This study introduces temporary marriage (Siqa) and evaluates and investigates peoples' attitudes and tendencies toward it. Participants were 395 residents of Tehran. An attitude questionnaire was used to collect data. Descriptive results of the study showed that there was at least one case of temporary marriage in the families or relatives of the study population. Participants considered the following as the most important obstacles to temporary marriage in Iran: culture, family objections, logical objections, and permanent wife's objection. The comparison between the different groups showed that men, single people, employed people, and people with a history of temporary marriage in their family have a tendency toward temporary marriage. Although 25% of the study population was inclined to temporary marriage, its prevalence in society is about 9%. The main reason for its underdevelopment is the societal obstacles, expecially culture and family.

Abstract:Background Attitudes toward individuals with intellectual disability (ID) are the most important factor affecting their social integration and can cause them to experience a sense of achievement or discrimination. The present study aimed to evaluate the latent factor structure and validity of the Persian version of the Attitudes toward Intellectual Disability (ATTID) Short‐Form questionnaire. Methods The latent factor structure of the Persian version of the ATTID Short‐Form was established in a convenient sample of the general population (N = 280) in Iran. The structural validity and temporal reliability, internal consistency and confirmatory factor analysis were evaluated. Data analysis was done with SPSS v23 Windows edition and R v4.2.1. Results The Persian version of the ATTID Short‐Form was shown to have a five‐factor structure: discomfort, knowledge of capacity, interaction, sensitivity and knowledge of cause. The structure was appropriately fit according to the fit indices (χ2(485) = 530.12), (P‐value = 0.077). All the subscales had good temporal reliability. Conclusions Findings suggest that the Persian version of the Short‐Form of ATTID is a brief, valid and reliable measure that can be used in research and clinical practice.

International School Teachers in Iran and Their Intercultural Communicative Competence: Does Sociocultural Background Make a Difference?

Abstract:This research study examined international school teachers’ perceptions of Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC), and whether or not the teachers’ sociocultural background could predict their ICC level. To collect data, 55 international school teachers participated in the quantitative phase of the study, out of which nine were selected for a semi-structured interview in the qualitative phase. Participants were requested to complete two questionnaires, one to gather demographic information and one to assess their perceptions and level of ICC (Yildiz, 2016; Zhou, 2011). The results of data analysis showed that, in the context of teachers working in international schools in Tehran, sociocultural factors such as age, number of countries visited and duration of the visits, and number of languages spoken, could not predict teachers’ perception of ICC; gender was the exception. The quantitative findings revealed the lack of connection between prior international experience of the teachers and their ICC perception. Teacher participants found ICC as a way of respecting other cultures and accepting cultural differences. They also believed that attending international schools would positively affect students and teachers’ cultural identity.

Abstract:This study investigates whether the perceptions and attitudes of residents living within the vicinity of heritage tourism sites differ from those living further afield. It examines residents' attitudes toward tourism development; community attachment; environment and culture attitudes; economic gain; and involvement, alongside the moderating role of distance from heritage tourism sites. In doing so, it investigates how the aforementioned factors influence residents' perceptions of tourism development in their city. Data was collected from inhabitants of Kashan and Tabriz, two historic cities couched within Iran's growing heritage tourism sector, and analyzed using partial least squares - structural equation modeling. The findings demonstrate significant differences between the perceptions of tourism impacts, economic gain, environmental and cultural attitudes, and involvement between residents living within the vicinity of heritage tourism sites and those living further afield. However, these findings contradicted the hypotheses; identifying higher positive perceptions, environmental and cultural attitudes, economic gain, and involvement for residents living far from heritage tourism sites. Further, the findings did not support the moderating role of distance for the effects of influencing factors on residents' perceptions. Therefore, this study proffers significant theoretical contributions and practical implications with regards to developing sustainable tourism in Iran.

Abstract:The article examines the phenomenon of Islamic tolerance in the context of the value-based cultural paradigm of Islam. Based on sociological studies of the Arab Barometer of Public Opinion of Muslims living in the countries of the Islamic world, the interpretation of tolerance as a key value is given. The authors provide respondents' opinions on problematic issues related to Islamic identity and gender issues. The authors believe that Islamic tolerance is a multifaceted phenomenon that includes spirituality, moral imperatives, and a philosophy of mutual understanding. The article reveals the importance of tolerance for developing dialogue in interfaith relations. The Arab Barometer is a marker of the level of Islamic tolerance. The significance of Islamic tolerance lies in its formation of ideological and tolerant attitudes.
