Abstract:Utilizing the diffractive effect of the output light fields from photonic nanojets, a new scheme for a microsphere array is designed to focus an incident wave to achieve subwavelength resolution in the far field. The three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method has been introduced to investigate the beam focusing phenomenon along the propagation direction. According to the numerical calculation results, we find that a focal spot with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 0.63λ can be achieved at a distance of 20.4λ away from the exit plane of the microsphere array with a refractive index n = 1.45. We show that the properties of the focal spot will be diverse with the changes of the refractive index, the incident wavelength, and the arrangement of the array. This potential relationship is explicitly analyzed.

Abstract:Optical lattices have several applications including super-resolution imaging, lithography, and light-tweezers. Compared with the conventional multibeam interference method, optical lattices in a tightly focused light fields are presented by cylindrical vector polarization illumination and multisector amplitude modulation. The polarization and phase difference of the illumination beam, including the size and relative position of the sectors, were analyzed using the vector diffraction theory. The obtained results indicate that the primitive cell shape of optical lattices can be controlled by the polarization direction of the illumination beam when the relative positions of sectors in the amplitude modulation mask are set. In addition, the period and primitive cell shape of optical lattices with hyper or complex constructions can be controlled by the relative positions of sectors, while the optical lattice zone primarily depends on the sector size. By combining polarization and amplitude modulation in a high numerical aperture optical system, these engineered optical lattices are potentially beneficial in expanding their applications.
Arbitrary Manipulation of Micro-Particles in Three Dimensions by Steering of Multiple Orbital Angular Momentum Modes

Abstract:Optical tweezers is an increasingly important technique for controlling and probing particles since computer-generated holography (CGH) make steering of multiple traps individually possible. In addition, the dark focus of orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams is increasingly widely used in trapping reflecting, absorbing or low-dielectric-constant objects. In this paper, we present a method to create arbitrary three-dimensional configurations of orbital angular momentum modes to achieve manipulation of micro-particles. Compared with conventional optical tweezers, this method can steer mixed arrays of traps individually and randomly by producing three-dimensional structure of optical vortices. These optical traps we used was formed by a CGH generated complex phase mask, which has three components: 1) a helical phase mask to change the transverse phase structure, 2) a blazed grating phase mask to vary the propagation direction of the incident beams, and 3) a modulated grating phase mask to divert the focal plane from the planar configurations. The latter one ensure that we can form threedimensional trapping patterns. The trap patterns can also be generated dynamically by holographic display system based on liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS). The experimental results show that the refresh frequency of reconfiguring achieves 24fps. Our method is effective and promise an exciting new opportunity to be used as a valuable non-contact manipulation tool in various applications.

Abstract:Spatially controllable focal fields play a pivotal role in light manipulation and provide significant opportunities for precisely manipulating light–matter interactions in a wide range of applications. In particular, the double-helix focal field—characterized by a distinctive helical structure—exhibits exceptional optical properties, thus differentiating it apart from conventional focal fields. However, the rapid construction of a double-helix focal field with controllable characteristics and a uniform intensity remains a challenging task. Based on the theory of pattern synthesis of an antenna array, we propose and realize the generation of three-dimensional (3D) doughnut-spot arrays and double-helix focal fields with specified characteristics in a 4π system by reverse-solving the radiation field of the virtual antenna. Numerical examples indicate that the desired novel focal fields, including features such as shape, orientation, length, and period, could be rapidly, conveniently, and flexibly customized by selecting appropriate parameters for the magnetic dipole array antennas. This method could reveal an avenue for enhanced light manipulation for applications in materials processing, optical lithography, and optical communications.

Manipulating Orbital Angular Momenta of Photons by Transformation Media

Abstract:We propose a scheme to controllably convert the wavefront of an arbitrary incident beam into a helical one by compact transformation slabs, thus enabling the output beam to carry desirable orbital angular momentum (OAM). First, based on transformation optics, a three-dimensional (3D) phase transformation between any two wavefronts by °at transformation media is established and then used to mold a wavefront of Gaussian beam into a helical one. Second, 3D FDTD simulations are performed to confirm the spiraling evolutions of the resultant field and phase, clearly demonstrating OAM generated. Further theoretical analyses show that the refractive index exhibiting a helical distribution leads to the oppositely spiral phase front and that it is feasible to produce desirable OAM by generators of unit OAM. The results not only provide an additional way to manipulate phase and photon OAM, but reciprocally shed further light on the phase structure of helical beams, which leads to a new transformation way by a surface.

Abstract:We demonstrate that a J0-Bessel-correlated beam that is incident on a homogeneous sphere produces a highly unusual distribution of the scattered field, with the maximum no longer occurring in the forward direction. Such a beam can be easily generated using a spatially incoherent, annular source. Moreover, the direction of maximal scattering can be shifted by changing the spatial coherence length. In this process, the total power that is scattered remains constant. This new tool to control scattering directionality may be used to steer the scattered field away from the forward direction and selectively address detectors situated at different angles.

Abstract:We demonstrate that directional electromagnetic scattering can be realized in an artificial Mie resonant structure that supports electric and magnetic dipole modes simultaneously. The directivity of the far-field radiation pattern can be switched by changing wavelength of the incident light as well as tailoring the geometric parameters of the structure. In addition, we further design a quasiperiodic spoof Mie resonant structure by alternately inserting two materials into the slits. The results show that multi-band directional light scattering is realized by exciting multiple electric and magnetic dipole modes with different frequencies in the quasiperiodic structure. The presented design concept is suitable for microwave to terahertz region and can be applied to various advanced optical devices, such as antenna, metamaterial and metasurface.

Abstract:A wide variety of practical applications utilize three-dimensional (3D) hollow spots. To improve their performance, it is critical to independently control the transverse and longitudinal size of a 3D hollow spot. Here, we propose a method of creating a superoscillation 3D hollow spot by properly engineering the spatial polarization distribution. A cylindrical vector wave can be generated and the transverse and longitudinal sizes of the 3D hollow spot can be independently controlled by individually optimizing the wave fronts of the radial and azimuthal components in the cylindrical vector wave. A cylindrical vector metalens integrated with the functions of polarization conversion and wave-front manipulation is optimized and fabricated. The generated 3D hollow spot is experimentally demonstrated with a transverse size of (0.336 ± 0.005) λ and a longitudinal size of (1.170 ± 0.005) λ . Our method provides an easy and practical approach to generate a 3D hollow spot with a subwavelength transverse size, which can be intriguing for nanoparticle manipulation and in nanomicroscopy. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevApplied.19.044069 © 2023 American Physical Society

Controlling light scattering and polarization by spherical particles with radial anisotropy

Abstract:Based on full-wave electromagnetic theory, we derive the zero-forward and zero-backward scattering conditions for radially anisotropic spheres within the quasi-static limit. We find that the near-field intensity can be tuned dramatically through the adjustment of the radial anisotropy, while the far-field light scattering diagrams are similar under the zero-forward or zero-backward scattering conditions. Generalized "Brewster's angle" for anisotropic spheres is also derived, at which the scattering light is totally polarized. In addition, the high-quality polarized scattering wave and the tunable polarization conversion can be achieved for the radially anisotropic spheres.

Abstract:We propose a new approach to generate a controllable three-dimensional (3D) optical cage by double-mode cylindrical vector beam in the vicinity of focus, by controlling the polarization state of beam. The simulation results show that the 3D optical cage of spheroid surface shape with a sharp dark region surrounded by a uniform optical barrier with a maximum deviation of 2% is achieved. The finite-difference time-domain calculation of optical force validates that such a kind of 3D optical cage has the trapping capability of the low-refractive-index particles with the size being much smaller than the light wavelength.

Abstract:It is of great significance to control the energy, location, topological charge, and other parameters of each beam in three-dimensional space. Thus, optical array is proposed and widely used in processing, communication, microscopy, storage, and other fields. However, the current methods to generate optical array are only effective in specific scenarios. In this work, we present an efficient and general method, which separates iterative calculation and parameter selection by introducing a special mapping space, allowing the generation of optical arrays with arbitrary dimensions, optional parameters, and any energy ratios. This method is compared with traditional methods from both simulation and experiment and is superior in diffraction efficiency, focus amount, and calculation speed. Additionally, a five-dimensional optical array with specially designed parameters is produced to show the versatility for different parameters. It shows advantages in beam shaping and parallelization and will be instrumental for applications in information storage, industrial processing, and three-dimensional imaging.

Abstract:Three-dimensional optical matters are created by combining the single beam optical trapping with the conventional Z-scan technique. Dynamic light diffraction is employed to evaluate the structure and quality of the optical matter formed at the optimum trapping power. The lattice constant of the optical matter is extracted based on the Bragg and Snell laws, showing that polystyrene spheres are nearly close-packed in the optical matter, confirmed by comparing the diffraction pattern of the optical matter with that of a colloidal photonic crystal fabricated by the self-assembled technique. The relatively broad diffraction peaks observed in the optical matter indicate that the density of disorders in it is higher than that in the photonic crystal. It is suggested that the optical matter possesses a random close-packed structure rather than a face centered cubic one.
High fidelity generation of complex optical field through scattering medium with iterative wavefront optimization

Abstract: Light scattering within scattering media presents a substantial obstacle to optical transmission. A speckle pattern with random amplitude and phase distribution is observed when coherent light travels through strong scattering media. Fortunately, wavefront shaping has been successfully employed with a spatial light modulator to recover intensity targets after scattering media, such as a sharp focus point or specified two-dimensional patterns. There have, however, been few studies that attempted to separately manipulate the amplitude and phase of the focusing field. In this paper, we propose a feedback-based wavefront shaping method to generate complex optical fields through scattering medium. A reliable phase retrieval approach is introduced to provide the complex feedback information, i.e., the amplitude and phase of the focusing field. Accordingly, in order to modulate the speckle field into a desired complex structured optical field, a multi-objective genetic algorithm is used to find the best phase map. To demonstrate the proposed method's high performance, experimental tests have been carried out. High fidelity is demonstrated in the generation of diverse complex light fields, both in amplitude and phase. Our findings may facilitate the manipulation of light field through scattering medium, and are anticipated to further promote future applications such as optogenetics, vortex optical communication, and optical trapping through scattering media.
Controlling Electromagnetic Surface Waves with Conformal Transformation Optics

Abstract:The application of transformation optics to the development of intriguing electromagnetic devices can produce weakly anisotropic or isotropic media with the assistance of quasi-conformal and/or conformal mapping, as opposed to the strongly anisotropic media produced by general mappings; however, it is typically limited to two-dimensional applications. By addressing the conformal mapping between two manifolds embedded in three-dimensional space, we demonstrate that electromagnetic surface waves can be controlled without introducing singularity and anisotropy into the device parameters. Using fruitful surface conformal parameterization methods, a near-perfect conformal mapping between smooth manifolds with arbitrary boundaries can be obtained. Illustrations of cloaking and illusions, including surface Luneburg and Eaton lenses and black holes for surface waves, are provided. Our work brings the manipulation of surface waves at microwave and optical wavelengths one step closer.

Abstract:In recent years, complex optical fields with spatially inhomogeneous phases, polarizations and optical singularities have drawn many research interests. Many novel effects have been predicted and demonstrated for light beams with these unconventional states in both linear and nonlinear optics regimes. Although local optical phase could be controlled directly or through hologram structures in isotropic materials such as glasses, optical anisotropy is still required for manipulating polarization states and wavelengths. The anisotropy could be either intrinsic such as in crystals/liquid crystals (LCs) or the induced birefringence from dielectric or metallic structures. In this talk, we will briefly review some of our attempts in tailoring complex optical fields via anisotropic microstructures. We developed a micro-photo-patterning system that could generate complex micro-images then further guides the arbitrary local LC directors. Due to the electro-optically (EO) tunable anisotropy of LC, various reconfigurable complex optical fields such as optical vortices (OVs), multiplexed OVs, OV array, Airy beams and vector beams are obtained. Different LC modes such as homogeneous alignment nematic, hybrid alignment nematic and even blue phase LCs are adopted to optimize the static and dynamic beam characteristics depending on application circumstances. We are also trying to extend our approaches to new wavelength bands, such as mid-infrared and even THz ranges. Some preliminary results are obtained. In addition, based on our recently developed local poling techniques for ferroelectric crystals, we will also discuss and demonstrate the nonlinear complex optical field conversion in Lithium Niobate wafers with patterned ferroelectric domain structures.

Abstract:In geometrical optical design, we only need to choose a suitable combination of lenses, prims, and mirrors to design an optical path. It is a simple and classic method for engineers. However, people cannot design fantastical optical devices such as invisibility cloaks, optical wormholes, etc. by geometrical optics. Transformation optics has paved the way for these complicated designs. However, controlling the propagation of light by transformation optics is not a direct design process like geometrical optics. In this study, a novel mixed method for optical design is proposed which has both the simplicity of classic geometrical optics and the flexibility of transformation optics. This mixed method overcomes the limitations of classic optical design; at the same time, it gives intuitive guidance for optical design by transformation optics. Three novel optical devices with fantastic functions have been designed using this mixed method, including asymmetrical transmissions, bidirectional focusing, and bidirectional cloaking. These optical devices cannot be implemented by classic optics alone and are also too complicated to be designed by pure transformation optics. Numerical simulations based on both the ray tracing method and full-wave simulation method are carried out to verify the performance of these three optical devices.

Abstract:The scattering of light is perhaps the most fundamental of optical processes. However, active and dynamic control of the directionality of a scattered light field has until now remained elusive. Here we show that with an easily generated, Bessel-correlated field, this goal can be achieved, at least partially. In particular, the angular distribution of a field scattered by a random spherical particle can be tuned to gradually suppress the forward scattering intensity and even create a conelike scattered field. Our method provides a tool for the dynamic control of scattering patterns, both macroscopically and microscopically.

Vector optical fields with arbitrary amplitude and polarization distribution can be generated based on a spatial light modulator and a common path interferometer with the aid of a 4f system, and the polarization distribution in focal fields is numerically studied. When incident optical fields is centrosymmetric, the ellipticity of focal fields is the same as that of incident fields when the ellipticity keeps constant; however, if the ellipticity of incident optical fields is not constant, the ellipticity for focal fields is different from the input one. For the case that the intensity of incident fields is not centrosymmetric, the ellipticity of its focal fields is not same as input fields when its ellipticity keeps constant and orientation is inhomogeneous, and it is also the case for the condition that the ellipticity is not constant. These findings are the result of interferences of broken-symmetry input fields. Optimal structured light waves generation in 3D volumes using communication mode optics

Abstract:Achieving precise control of light intensity in 3D volumes is highly in demand in many applications in optics. Various wavefront shaping techniques have been utilized to reconstruct a target amplitude profile within a 3D space. However, these techniques are intrinsically limited by cross-talk and often rely on optimization methods to improve the reconstruction quality. We propose and experimentally demonstrate a new wavefront shaping method based on interfering the optimum orthogonal communication modes connecting a source plane and a receiving volume. These optimum modes are computed from the singular value decomposition of a coupling operator that connects each point at the source plane to another one in the receiving volume. The modes comprise a pair of source and receiving eigenfunctions, each one forming a complete orthogonal basis for their respective spaces. We utilize these modes to construct arbitrarily chosen 2D and 3D structured light waves within the output receiving volume and optically generate these waves using a spatial light modulator. Our generated intensity profiles exhibit low cross-talk, high fidelity, and high contrast. We envision our work to inspire new directions in any domain that requires controlling light intensity in 3D with high precision such as in holography, microscopy, metrology, light-matter interactions, and optical sensing.
