Abstract:Edge computing is a new type of computing models that performs computing tasks at the edge of the network.Compared with cloud computing,it can respond to user’s needs more quickly and reliably.Starting from the shortcomings of cloud computing,the concept and general architecture of edge computing were illustrated,and then two reference frameworks proposed by industry alliances were elaborated.Four challenges of edge computing and their latest research progress were summarized.With the development of theory and technology related to edge computing,it will become a key technology to promote the upgrade of Internet of things (IoT) services.For this reason,two applications of edge computing in manufacturing and security monitoring were introduced.

Abstract:Edge computing is the deployment of network operations and data-handling activities toward more solitary sources of data collecting or storage. Industrial edge computing, which includes industrial applications, describes the method of controlling data-handling operations using distinct data sources, such as smart edge devices. As a result, whether collecting, processing, or evaluating data in smart factories, IIoT devices and smart equipment do not need to contact centralised cloud platforms. Information can also be sent to the cloud for additional analysis or integration into a larger system, depending on how important the data analysis performed at the edge is. Industrial edge computing is a term used to describe a distributed platform that combines communication, processing, and storage capabilities to run real-time applications that may be accessed directly from the cloud. The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) revolution has raised demands for flexible connectivity, realtime control, data optimization, intelligent applications, security, and privacy protection. Edge computing nodes serve as intelligent gateways for assets, services, and systems, bridging the gap between the real and digital worlds.

Abstract:Edge intelligence refers to a set of connected systems and devices for data collection, caching, processing, and analysis proximity to where data are captured based on artificial intelligence. Edge intelligence aims at enhancing data processing and protects the privacy and security of the data and users. Although recently emerged, spanning the period from 2011 to now, this field of research has shown explosive growth over the past five years. In this article, we present a thorough and comprehensive survey of the literature surrounding edge intelligence. We first identify four fundamental components of edge intelligence, i.e., edge caching, edge training, edge inference, and edge offloading based on theoretical and practical results pertaining to proposed and deployed systems. We then aim for a systematic classification of the state of the solutions by examining research results and observations for each of the four components and present a taxonomy that includes practical problems, adopted techniques, and application goals. For each category, we elaborate, compare, and analyze the literature from the perspectives of adopted techniques, objectives, performance, advantages and drawbacks, and so on. This article provides a comprehensive survey of edge intelligence and its application areas. In addition, we summarize the development of the emerging research fields and the current state of the art and discuss the important open issues and possible theoretical and technical directions.

Abstract:With the breakthroughs in deep learning, the recent years have witnessed a booming of artificial intelligence (AI) applications and services, spanning from personal assistant to recommendation systems to video/audio surveillance. More recently, with the proliferation of mobile computing and Internet-of-Things (IoT), billions of mobile and IoT devices are connected to the Internet, generating zillions Bytes of data at the network edge. Driving by this trend, there is an urgent need to push the AI frontiers to the network edge so as to fully unleash the potential of the edge big data. To meet this demand, edge computing, an emerging paradigm that pushes computing tasks and services from the network core to the network edge, has been widely recognized as a promising solution. The resulted new inter-discipline, edge AI or edge intelligence, is beginning to receive a tremendous amount of interest. However, research on edge intelligence is still in its infancy stage, and a dedicated venue for exchanging the recent advances of edge intelligence is highly desired by both the computer system and artificial intelligence communities. To this end, we conduct a comprehensive survey of the recent research efforts on edge intelligence. Specifically, we first review the background and motivation for artificial intelligence running at the network edge. We then provide an overview of the overarching architectures, frameworks and emerging key technologies for deep learning model towards training/inference at the network edge. Finally, we discuss future research opportunities on edge intelligence. We believe that this survey will elicit escalating attentions, stimulate fruitful discussions and inspire further research ideas on edge intelligence.

Abstract:Along with the rapid developments in communication technologies and the surge in the use of mobile devices, a brand-new computation paradigm, Edge Computing, is surging in popularity. Meanwhile, Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications are thriving with the breakthroughs in deep learning and the many improvements in hardware architectures. Billions of data bytes, generated at the network edge, put massive demands on data processing and structural optimization. Thus, there exists a strong demand to integrate Edge Computing and AI, which gives birth to Edge Intelligence. In this paper, we divide Edge Intelligence into AI for edge (Intelligence-enabled Edge Computing) and AI on edge (Artificial Intelligence on Edge). The former focuses on providing more optimal solutions to key problems in Edge Computing with the help of popular and effective AI technologies while the latter studies how to carry out the entire process of building AI models, i.e., model training and inference, on the edge. This paper provides insights into this new inter-disciplinary field from a broader perspective. It discusses the core concepts and the research road-map, which should provide the necessary background for potential future research initiatives in Edge Intelligence.

Abstract:Industrial Internet of Things seeks to integrate Cloud-Edge-End computing architecture into existing manufacturing systems as an emerging and prospective paradigm of intelligent manufacturing to increase productivity and efficiency. Nowadays, most existing systems adopt a traditional pyramidal architecture for data collection. However, with the increasing of heterogeneous devices and diverse communication protocols, interoperability and latency become a challenging and open issue that brings difficulty to the data collection. In this paper, we propose an interoperable and flat Industrial Internet of Things architecture for low latency data collection based on two emerging technologies, OPC UA and Software-Defined Networking (SDN). The OPC UA-based edge intelligent gateway shields the heterogeneity of devices by providing a unified semantic information model and standard data access interface. SDN delivers flexible configuration and centralized control of the network resource and scheduling, which improves resilience and manageability. Moreover, we implement the proposed architecture on a discrete intelligent manufacturing production line testbed to evaluate its feasibility. The experiment results demonstrate that the proposed architecture can improve interoperability and latency for legacy manufacturing systems.

Abstract:The digital landscape of the Internet of Energy (IoE) is on the brink of a revolutionary transformation with the integration of edge Artificial Intelligence (AI). This comprehensive review elucidates the promise and potential that edge AI holds for reshaping the IoE ecosystem. Commencing with a meticulously curated research methodology, the article delves into the myriad of edge AI techniques specifically tailored for IoE. The myriad benefits, spanning from reduced latency and real-time analytics to the pivotal aspects of information security, scalability, and cost-efficiency, underscore the indispensability of edge AI in modern IoE frameworks. As the narrative progresses, readers are acquainted with pragmatic applications and techniques, highlighting on-device computation, secure private inference methods, and the avant-garde paradigms of AI training on the edge. A critical analysis follows, offering a deep dive into the present challenges including security concerns, computational hurdles, and standardization issues. However, as the horizon of technology ever expands, the review culminates in a forward-looking perspective, envisaging the future symbiosis of 5G networks, federated edge AI, deep reinforcement learning, and more, painting a vibrant panorama of what the future beholds. Abstract:Edge Intelligence (EI) is an emerging computing and communication paradigm that enables Artificial Intelligence (AI) functionality at the network edge. In this article, we highlight EI as an emerging and important field of research, discuss the state of research, analyze research gaps and highlight important research challenges with the objective of serving as a catalyst for research and innovation in this emerging area. We take a multidisciplinary view to reflect on the current research in AI, edge computing, and communication technologies, and we analyze how EI reflects on existing research in these fields. We also introduce representative examples of application areas that benefit from, or even demand the use of EI.

Abstract:With the breakthroughs in Deep Learning, recent years have witnessed a massive surge in Artificial Intelligence applications and services. Meanwhile, the rapid advances in Mobile Computing and Internet of Things has also given rise to billions of mobile and smart sensing devices connected to the Internet, generating zettabytes of data at the network edge. The opportunity to combine these two domains of technologies to power interconnected devices with intelligence is likely to pave the way for a new wave of technology revolutions. Embracing this technology revolution, in this article, we present a novel computing vision named Deep Edge Intelligence (DEI). DEI employs Deep Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Cloud and Edge Computing, 5G/6G networks, Internet of Things, Microservices, etc. aiming to provision reliable and secure intelligence services to every person and organisation at any place with better user experience. The vision, system architecture, key layers and features of DEI are also detailed. Finally, we reveal the key enabling technologies and research challenges associated with it.

Abstract:With the advent of a new round of the Industrial Revolution, the Industrial Internet will carry the convergence of heterogeneous network and the dynamic reconfiguration of industrial equipment. In order to further provide higher performance of network capabilities, the Industrial Internet has experienced unprecedented growth while facing enormous challenges from the actual needs of industrial networks. The typical scenarios in industrial applications, combined with the technical advantages of mobile edge computing, are described in view of the low latency, high bandwidth and high reliability demanded by the Industrial Internet in the new era. The key technologies of mobile edge computing for the Industrial Internet have been outlined in this treatise, whose feasibility and importance are demonstrated by typical industrial applications that have been deployed. As combined with the development trend of the Industrial Internet, this paper summarizes the existing work and discusses the future research direction of key technologies of mobile edge computing for the Industrial Internet.

Being one of the most active research fields in both academic and industry, the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) enables various types of vehicular applications, such as autonomous driving, precise fleet management, and real-time video analytics, which contribute significantly to bring us traffic efficiency, driving safety, and ride comfort. However, these powerful applications always require intensive computation and very large size caching services under ultra-low latency constraints, and thus pose significant challenges on resource-constrained vehicles.

Abstract:In this era of the Internet of Everything (IoE), edge computing has emerged as the critical enabling technology to solve a series of issues caused by an increasing amount of interconnected devices and large-scale data transmission. However, the deficiencies of edge computing paradigm are gradually being magnified in the context of IoE, especially in terms of service migration, security and privacy preservation, and deployment issues of edge node. These issues can not be well addressed by conventional approaches. Thanks to the rapid development of upcoming technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, and microservices, novel and more effective solutions have emerged and been applied to solve existing challenges. In addition, edge computing can be deeply integrated with technologies in other domains (e.g., AI, blockchain, 6G, and digital twin) through interdisciplinary intersection and practice, releasing the potential for mutual benefit. These promising integrations need to be further explored and researched. In addition, edge computing provides strong support in applications scenarios, such as remote working, new physical retail industries, and digital advertising, which has greatly changed the way we live, work, and study. In this article, we present an up-to-date survey of the edge computing research. In addition to introducing the definition, model, and characteristics of edge computing, we discuss a set of key issues in edge computing and novel solutions supported by emerging technologies in IoE era. Furthermore, we explore the potential and promising trends from the perspective of technology integration. Finally, new application scenarios and the final form of edge computing are discussed.

Abstract:Internet of Things (IoT) is an emerging domain that promises ubiquitous connection to the Internet, turning common objects into connected devices. The IoT paradigm is changing the way people interact with things around them. It paves the way for creating pervasively connected infrastructures to support innovative services and promises better flexibility and efficiency. Such advantages are attractive not only for consumer applications, but also for the industrial domain. Over the last few years, we have been witnessing the IoT paradigm making its way into the industry marketplace with purposely designed solutions. In this paper, we clarify the concepts of IoT, Industrial IoT, and Industry 4.0. We highlight the opportunities brought in by this paradigm shift as well as the challenges for its realization. In particular, we focus on the challenges associated with the need of energy efficiency, real-time performance, coexistence, interoperability, and security and privacy. We also provide a systematic overview of the state-of-the-art research efforts and potential research directions to solve Industrial IoT challenges.

An Edge-Computing based Industrial Gateway for Industry 4.0 using ARM TrustZone Technology

Abstract:Secure and efficient communication to establish a seamless nexus between the five levels of a typical automation pyramid is paramount to Industry 4.0. Specifically, vertical and horizontal integration of these levels is an overarching requirement to accelerate productivity and improve operational activities. Vertical integration can improve visibility, flexibility, and productivity by connecting systems and applications. Horizontal integration can provide better collaboration and adaptability by connecting internal production facilities, multi-site operations, and third-party partners in a supply chain. In this paper, we propose an Edge-computing-based Industrial Gateway for interfacing information technology and operational technology that can enable Industry 4.0 vertical and horizontal integration. Subsequently, we design and develop a working prototype to demonstrate a remote production-line maintenance use case with a strong focus on security aspects and the edge paradigm to bring computational resources and data storage closer to data sources.

Abstract:Beyond fifth-generation (B5G) networks, or so-called "6G", is the next-generation wireless communications systems that will radically change how Society evolves. Edge intelligence is emerging as a new concept and has extremely high potential in addressing the new challenges in B5G networks by providing mobile edge computing and edge caching capabilities together with Artificial Intelligence (AI) to the proximity of end users. In edge intelligence empowered B5G networks, edge resources are managed by AI systems for offering powerful computational processing and massive data acquisition locally at edge networks. AI helps to obtain efficient resource scheduling strategies in a complex environment with heterogeneous resources and a massive number of devices, while meeting the ultra-low latency and ultra-high reliability requirements of novel applications, e.g., self-driving cars, remote operation, intelligent transport systems, Industry 4.0, smart energy, e-health, and AR/VR services. By integrating AI functions into edge networks, radio networks become service-aware and resource-aware to have a full insight into the operating environment and can adapt resource allocation/orchestration in a dynamic manner. Despite the potential of edge intelligence, however, many challenges also need to be addressed in this new paradigm. Until now, limited research efforts have been made on edge intelligence for B5G networks.

Abstract:<p>The Industrial Internet is a promising technology combining industrial systems with Internet connectivity to significantly improve the product efficiency and reduce production cost by cooperating with intelligent devices, in which the advanced computing, big data analysis and intelligent perception techniques have been involved. This paper comprehensively surveys the recent advances of the Industrial Internet, including reference architectures, key technologies, relative applications and future challenges. Reference architectures which have been proposed for different application scenarios and their corresponding characteristics are summarized. Key technologies, such as cloud computing, mobile edge computing, fog computing, which are classified according to different layers in the architecture, are presented to support a variety of applications in the Industrial Internet. Meanwhile, future challenges and research trends are discussed as well to promote further research of the Industrial Internet.</p>

Abstract:Nowadays, we have witnessed the explosion of data and devices in the areas of IoT and mobile computing. Moreover, we are facing more and more complicated computation tasks, serious privacy and security problems, and critical delay requirements. All these challenges call for the applications of edge computing to deploy computing resource closed to mobile users and the data source. In this talk, based on our own research results, we will mainly focus on the theory and platform implemenation of edge intelligence, including online intelligence, distributed intelligence, as well as the privacy and security issues involved. We will also elaborate our current progress in the key applications of our odge platform such as Automatic Driving and AIoT Security.
