Abstract:In this paper, a new Fredholm transformation approach is presented for flapwise-bending vibration analysis of nano-beams. The size-dependent effects are investigated using Eringen non-local elasticity theory. Also, using Rayleigh theory, the rotatory inertia effect on the flapwise vibration of beam is investigated. The novelty of presented approach is a new introduced change of variable that makes the process of solution simpler and shorter. In this paper, the bending moment acting on the cross section of beam, instead of mode shape function, is approximated using a power series. This idea converts the governing equation of motion into a simpler and shorter solvable one. The accuracy of presented approach is verified using comparison of obtained numerical results with those are available in the other published references.

Abstract:This research presents the numerical analysis of the triply coupled flap-wise, cord-wise and torsional vibrations of flexible rotating blades. Euler-Bernoulli bending and St. Venant torsion beam theories are considered to derive the governing differential equations of motion. Based on Finite Element Methodology (FEM), the cubic "Hermite" shape functions are implemented where the solution of the equations results in a linear engine problem. Then, the Dynamic (frequency dependent) Trigonometric Shape Functions (DISF's) for beam's uncoupled displacements are derived. The application of the Dynamic Finite Element (DFE) approach to the solution of the governing equations is then presented. The DFE formulation, based on the weighted residual method and the DTSF's results in a nonlinear engine problem representing eigenvalues and engine modes of the system. The applicability of the DFE method is then demonstrated by illustrative examples, where a Wittrick-Williams root counting technique is used to find the system's natural frequencies. The DFE approach, an intermediate method between FEM and "Exact" formulation, is characterized by higher convergence rates, and can be advantageously used when multiple natural frequencies and/or higher modes of beam-like structures are to be evaluated.

Abstract:A comparative study on two flexural-torsional buckling theories for tapered members is carried out. Finite element analysis based on the shell buckling theory, which is believed to be more accurate than any member theory because of less assumptions used, is also carried out to provide a common basis for comparison. Based on the more accurate member theory, linearly tapered members under end moments are analyzed, and a new formula having the similar expression to that for prismatic members is proposed, the accuracy of which is verified with the FE results.

Abstract:The flapwise bending free vibration analysis of isotropic rotating Timoshenko microbeams, including the size effects, is presented in this paper. A nonclassical theory, i.e. the Modified Couple Stress theory, has been employed to include the size effect in the presented formulation. By consideration of the Timoshenko beam assumptions the shear deformation and the rotary inertia effects are taken into account. The Hamilton’s principle is applied to the obtained strain and kinetic energy relations to derive the nonlinear equations of motion and the associated boundary conditions. After nondimensionalization of the equations of motion and the corresponding boundary conditions, the linearized form of the equations of motion and the accompanied boundary conditions are developed. A semi-analytical approach, i.e. the differential transform method, is implemented to achieve the flapping and axial frequencies. The achieved results are validated via comparison with the available results in the literature. The material length scale, shear deformation consideration, rotating speed and the slenderness ratio influences on the natural frequencies are examined. The results demonstrate that the slenderness ratio and the thickness to the material length scale parameter quotient are the dominant indicators in determining the usage of the nonclassical theories against classical theories. On the other hand, the precision in determination of the higher modes frequencies motivates us to implement the Timoshenko beam model instead of the Euler–Bernoulli beam model.

Abstract:This paper presents a new theory for the lateral buckling of web-tapered I-beams. Linear analysis is first conducted by taking account into the tapering effects of web-tapered I-beams, where the deformation compatibilities of the two flanges and web are considered in terms of the basic assumptions of thin-walled members. Subsequently, the total potential for the lateral buckling analysis of web-tapered I-beams is developed, based on the classical variational principle for buckling analysis. The lateral buckling loads of web-tapered cantilevers and simply supported beams of I-sections from the proposed theory are compared with those from the finite element (FE) analyses using two shell element models and two widely used beam element models. The two beam element models respectively represent the equivalent method using prismatic beam elements and the typical tapered beam theory in existing literature. These comparisons show that the results based on the total potential proposed in this paper are more accurate in predicting the lateral buckling loads of web-tapered I-beams than those in existing theories, indicating that the theory proposed in this paper is superior to existing theories. It is also found that the equivalent method using prismatic beam elements may yield unreliable buckling loads of tapered beams.

Abstract:In this article, transverse vibration of rotary functionally graded size-dependent tapered Bernoulli–Euler nanobeam in thermal environment at low temperature has been investigated based on Eringen's nonlocal theory for cantilever and propped cantilever boundary conditions. Material properties of FG nanobeam are supposed to be temperature dependant and vary continuously along the thickness according to the power-law form. The axial force is also included in the model as the true spatial variation due to the rotation. The nonlocal equations of motion are derived through Hamilton's principle and they are solved by the differential quadrature method. Validations are done by comparing available literatures and obtained results, which reveal the accuracy of the applied method. The detailed mathematical derivations are presented and numerical investigations are performed while the emphasis is placed on investigating the effect of the several parameters, such as angular velocity, material distribution profile, different boundary conditions, small-scale parameter and rate of cross-section change on the first three nondimensional natural frequencies of the rotary FG nanobeam in detail. Numerical results are presented to serve as benchmarks for the application and the design of nanoelectronic, nanodrive devices and nanomotor, in which nanobeams act as basic elements. They can also be useful as valuable sources for validating other approaches and approximate methods.The results of this article are suitable in designation of micromachines, such as micromotors and micro-rotors.

Abstract:The natural frequencies and the dynamic response of a rotating tapered cantilever Euler-Bernoulli beam were investigated.The height and the width of the tapered beam vary linearly along its length.The approach of Bezier curve interpolation was used to describe the deformation of the flexible beam.Both the transversal and the longitudinal deformations of the flexible beam were considered.And in the total longitudinal deformation,the non-linear coupling term,also known as the longitudinal shortening caused by transversal deformation,was considered.The rigid-flexible coupling dynamic equations of the system were established via employing the second kind of Lagrange's equation.A software package for the dynamic simulation of the rotating tapered cantilever beam was developed.Then the natural frequencies and the dynamic response of the rotating tapered cantilever beam were investigated and compared.The simulation shows that dynamics response and natural frequencies of different tapered beams will be significantly different.Reasonable modeling of the actual system will be necessary to get more accurate simulation results.

Abstract:Representing an important kind of engineering component, rotating beams with axially functionally graded cross sections have been studied by researchers through analytical and numerical methods extensively, but experimental studies for verification are yet comparatively limited. To make up for this, this paper presents an experimental study of the flap-wise vibration of three rotating beams with different cross section patterns under different speeds. Quality data is obtained with Digital Image Correlation measurement with Phase Mapping Method on rotation targets, and is used to extract the natural frequencies and mode shapes with Frequency Domain Decomposition. The variance of natural frequencies and mode shapes are discussed with experimental data and are compared to those from an extensively studied analytical model, which show that natural frequencies and mode shapes obtained from the introduced experiment are of high accuracy. In addition, a method to apply stable excitations that can be quantitatively analyzed on rotation structures is proposed in this paper in the applied experimental setup.

Abstract:<p>Based on the nonlocal strain gradient theory, the coupling nonlinear dynamic equations of a rotating double‐tapered cantilever Timoshenko nano‐beam are derived using the Hamilton principle. The equation of motion is discretized via the differential quadrature method. The effects of the angular velocity, nonlocal parameter, slenderness ratio, cross‐section parameter, and taper ratios are examined and discussed. It is shown that taper ratios and cross‐section parameter play a significant role in the vibration response of a rotating cantilever nano‐beam. Further as rotational angular velocity increases, the taper ratios and cross‐section parameter effect on the frequency response are increased for first modes of vibration.</p>

Abstract:Based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory (EBT),a new model for free bending vibration problems of rotating tapered beams using spline finite point method (SFPM)was investigated.The beam was discretized by a set of uniformly scattered spline nodes along the beam axis direction instead of me-shes,and the displacement field was approximated by the cubic B-spline interpolation functions.Both of the variations of cross-sectional dimension and the rotating centrifugally stiffened effect were considered in the proposed model,and the global stiffness and mass matrices of the structures were deduced based on the Hamilton principle.Computer programs were compiled to study the dynamic properties of rotating tapered beams.The finite element model (FEM)for the rotating tapered beams by using ANSYS was also built for validating the proposed model.The results show that the present results agree very well with the results of other reported literatures and the FEM,and the proposed model has the advantages of good computational accuracy,high modeling efficiency,simple boundary conditions,and convenience for compiling computer program.It is capable of studying the free bending vibration of rotating tapered beams with the variation of boundary conditions,taper ratios,cross-sectional types,rotating speeds,and hub radius.Both the taper ratios and rotating speeds have important roles on the dynamic properties of rotating tapered beams through parameter analysis.

Abstract:This research studies the vibration analysis of Euler–Bernoulli and Timoshenko beams utilizing the differential quadrature method (DQM) which has wide applications in the field of basic vibration of different components, for example, pillars, plates, round and hollow shells, and tanks. The free vibration of uniform and nonuniform beams laying on elastic Pasternak foundation will be studied under three sets of boundary conditions, that is, mixing between being simply upheld and fixed while utilizing the DQM. The natural frequencies and deflection values were produced through the examination of both beam types. Results show great concurrence with solutions from previous research studies. The impact of the nonuniform cross-section area on the vibration was contemplated. A comparison between the results from both beams is obtained. The focus of this work is on studying the deflection difference between both beam theories at different beam dimensions as well as showing the shape of rotation of the cross section while applying a nodal point load equation to simulate the moving load. The results were discussed and a general contemplation about the theories was developed.

Abstract:This paper is on flap-wise vibrations of centrifugally stiffened axially functionally graded beams with multiple lumped masses including rotary inertia effects. Material properties are defined along beams’ length using the function appropriate to the power law distribution. Energy expressions of Euler–Bernoulli beam model are stated for flexural vibrations of beam with additional multiple masses rotating around a hub. Energy formulations are discretised to apply Rayleigh–Ritz solution method which uses admissible polynomial mode shape function. Analyses are conducted by changing number, size and inertias of additional masses, taper ratios of beam, rotating speed and radius of hub and the power of distribution function of beam material. Non-dimensional parameters are used to reflect results that are validated by those given in current literature. Unique results are also given for the homogeneous and functionally graded beam rotating with multiple masses. Effects of varying parameters and advantages/shortcomings of present solution are reflected and discussed.

Abstract:In this study; free vibration analysis of a uniform, rotating, cantilever Timoshenko beam featuring coupling between flapwise bending and torsional vibrations is performed. At the beginning of the study, kinetic and potential energy expressions of a rotating Timoshenko beam having single cross-sectional symmetry are derived by using several explanatory tables and figures. In the following section, Hamilton’s principle is applied to the derived energy expressions to obtain the governing differential equations of motion. The parameters for the hub radius, rotational speed, rotary inertia, shear deformation, slenderness ratio and bending—torsion coupling are incorporated into the equations of motion. In the solution part, an efficient mathematical technique, called the differential transform method, is used to solve the governing differential equations of motion. Using the computer package Mathematica, the mode shapes are plotted and the effects of the incorporated parameters on the natural frequencies are investigated. The calculated results are tabulated in several tables and plotted in several graphs. In order to validate the calculated results, the beam is also modeled in the finite-element program ABAQUS. Moreover, two illustrative examples, chosen from open literature, are solved for further validation. Consequently, it is observed that there is a good agreement between the results.

Abstract:This study investigates the free vibration behavior of a double cracked nanobeam composed of bi-directional functionally graded material. The analysis incorporates Eringen's nonlocal elasticity theory and the Euler–Bernoulli theory. The material properties are considered to vary in both the thickness and length directions. The cracked nanobeam is modeled as a series of interconnected sub-beams, with rotational springs placed at the cracked sections. This modeling approach accounts for the discontinuities in rotational displacement resulting from bending, which is directly related to the bending moment transmitted by the cracked section. The problem is solved using the differential quadrature method, which approximates the derivatives of the field quantities by employing a weighted linear sum of the nodal values. By doing so, the problem is transformed into a linear algebraic system. Various supporting cases are examined, and a parametric study is conducted to analyze the impact of the axial and transverse gradient indices, nonlocal parameter, and crack severity on the obtained results.

Abstract:Journal of Vibration and Control, Ahead of Print. The natural frequency curve veering phenomena have been significant and used in several structural dynamic problems. By formulating a pre-twisted and double-tapered rotating Timoshenko beam as a structural problem, variations in mode interactions among coupled axial, chordwise, and flapwise motions were presented. Rotordynamic effects such as gyroscopic couple, centrifugal stiffening, and spin softening effects were taken into account while establishing the equations of motion. Hamilton's principle was used in deriving the equations of motion and is discretized based on Galerkin finite element method. Using dimensionless parameters, the model was verified with the existing literature for rotation, pre-twist, and double-taper configurations. A comparison of the frequency veering regions among the Euler–Bernoulli beam and Timoshenko beam theories is presented. Two-dimensional mode shape plots were used to show the coupled motions between axial displacement, chordwise bending, and flapwise bending. The effects of pre-twist and double-taper in the non-rotating Timoshenko beam on the modal properties of the rotating beam were examined. Natural frequency maps were drawn to locate the frequency veering curves. Mode interactions around different veering regions were shown with variations in mode shapes. An investigation on 60° pre-twisted and 0.5 ratio double-tapered rotating Timoshenko beam is presented.
Free transverse vibration analysis of tapered bernoulli-euler beams based on spline finite point method

Abstract:Based on Bernoulli-Euler beam theory,a new model was presented here to study free transverse vibration problems of tapered Euler beams by using the spline finite point method (SFPM)considering both width and height of beams'cross section linearly varying along the axial direction.With the proposed method,a beam was discretized by a set of uniformly scattered spline nodes along the axis direction instead of meshes,and the cubic-B spline interpolation functions were utilized to approximate the displacement filed of the beam.The free vibration equation of the beam was derived base on Hamilton Principle,and the global stiffness and mass matrices for the tapered beam were deduced in detail.The results of examples showed that the solutions to natural frequencies of tapered beams based on the proposed method are good in agreement with those reported in literatures;the proposed method has a higher accuracy,a lower computational cost and an easier way for boundary treatment;the solutions with a higher accuracy can be achieved by selecting the spline node number of no less than 15;the presented model is suitable for the free transverse vibration of tapered beams with various cross-section types,tapered ratios and boundary conditions.

Abstract:In this paper, an analytical modeling approach for the flexural vibration analysis of the nonuniform double-beam system is proposed via an improved Fourier series method, in which both types of translational and rotational springs are introduced to account for the mechanical coupling on the interface as well as boundary restraints. Energy formulation is employed for the dynamic description of the coupling system. With the aim to treat the varying thickness across the beam in a unified pattern, the relevant variables are all expanded into Fourier series. Supplementary terms with the smoothed characteristics are introduced to the standard Fourier series for the construction of displacement admissible function for each beam. In conjunction with the Rayleigh–Ritz procedure, the transverse modal characteristics of nonuniform double-beam system can be obtained by solving a standard eigenvalue problem. Instead of solving the certain value of nonideal boundary conditions, the continuous spring stiffnesses of the boundary conditions are considered, and the rotational restrains are introduced in the coupling beam interface. Numerical results are then presented to demonstrate the reliability of the current model and study the influence of various parameters, such as taper ratio, boundary, and coupling strength on the free vibration characteristics, with the emphasis put on the rotational restraining coefficients on the beam interface. This work can provide an efficient modeling framework for the vibration characteristics study of the complex double-beam system, especially with arbitrary varying thickness and coupling stiffness.

Abstract:A constrained variation modeling method for free vibration analysis of rotating double tapered functionally graded beams with different shear deformation beam theories is proposed in this paper. The material properties of the beam are supposed to continuously vary in the width direction with power-law exponent for different indexes. The mathematical formulation is developed based on the geometrically exact beam theory for each beam segment, the admissible functions denoting motion quantities are then expressed by a series of Chebyshev orthogonal polynomials. The governing equations are eventually derived using the constrained variational method to involve the continuity conditions of adjacent segments. Different shear deformation beam theories have been incorporated in the formulations, and the nonlinear effect of bending–stretching coupling vibration together with the Coriolis effect is taken into account. Comparison of dimensionless natural frequencies is performed with the existing literature to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the proposed method. Comparative discussions are performed on the vibration behaviors of the double tapered rotating functionally graded beam with first-order shear deformation beam theory and other higher-order shear deformation beam theories. The effect of material property graduation, power-law index, rotation speed, hub radius, slenderness ratio, and taper ratios is scrutinized via parametric studies, respectively.
Dynamic modeling and coupling characteristics of rotating inclined beams with twisted-shape sections

Abstract:In the existing literature, most studies investigated the free vibrations of a rotating pre-twisted cantilever beam; however, few considered the effect of the elasticsupport boundary and the quantification of modal coupling degree among different vibration directions. In addition, Coriolis, spin softening, and centrifugal stiffening effects are not fully included in the derived equations of motion of a rotating beam in most literature, especially the centrifugal stiffening effect in torsional direction. Considering these deficiencies, this study established a coupled flapwise–chordwise–axial–torsional dynamic model of a rotating double-tapered, pre-twisted, and inclined Timoshenko beam with elastic supports based on the semi-analytic method. Then, the proposed model was verified with experiments and ANSYS models using Beam188 and Shell181 elements. Finally, the effects of setting and pretwisted angles on the degree of coupling among flapwise, chordwise, and torsional directions were quantified via modal strain energy ratios. Results showed that 1) the appearance of torsional vibration originates from the combined effect of flapwise–torsional and chordwise–torsional couplings dependent on the Coriolis effect, and that 2) the flapwise–chordwise coupling caused by the pure pre-twisted angle is stronger than that caused by the pure setting angle.
