Abstract:Achieving effective control of thermal and mechanical distributions has been a long-standing goal, and metamaterials have emerged as a crucial tool for customizing functional structures to manipulate these physical fields. However, existing design paradigms do not apply to thermal-mechanical metamaterials that operate on thermal and mechanical fields simultaneously and independently. First, Due to the different geometric requirements imposed by the thermal and mechanical fields on the unit cells, there is a conflict between functional coupling and design coupling, which limits the design of thermal-mechanical metamaterials. Second, the fact that continuum mechanical equations do not remain invariant under general coordinate transformations hinders the application of conventional theories. Additionally, balancing minimal design costs, manufacturability, and optimal functionality remains a significant challenge. Here, we propose a global data-driven design method using Bayesian hyperparameter optimization. This method creates thermal-mechanical metamaterials from a large, pre-computed unit cell database. Our flexible method allows designing thermal-mechanical metamaterials with various functional combinations (e.g., cloaks, concentrators, and rotators) and shapes. Compared to traditional solutions, this approach balances manufacturability and functionality while offering unparalleled universality and low design costs. Experimental measurements validate the effectiveness of our method. Our approach can rapidly respond to new design scenarios and address design challenges related to the multi-physical effects.

Abstract:In this study we report a computational approach towards multiscale architected materials analysis and design. A particular challenge in modeling and simulation of materials, and especially the development of hierarchical design approaches, has been to identify ways by which complex multi-level material structures can be effectively modeled. One way to achieve this is to use coarse-graining approaches, where physical relationships can be effectively described with reduced dimensionality. In this paper we report an integrated deep neural network architecture that first learns coarse-grained representations of complex hierarchical microstructure data via a discrete variational autoencoder and then utilizes an attention-based diffusion model solve both forward and inverse problems, including a capacity to solve degenerate design problems. As an application, we demonstrate the method in the analysis and design of hierarchical highly porous metamaterials within the context of nonlinear stressstrain responses to compressive deformation. We validate the mechanical behavior and mechanisms of deformation using embedded-atom molecular dynamics simulations carried out for copper and nickel, showing good agreement with the design objectives.

Abstract:As advanced manufacturing techniques such as additive manufacturing become widely available, it is of interest to investigate the potential advantages that arise when designing periodic metamaterials to achieve a specific desired behavior or physical property. Designing the fine scale detailed geometry of periodic metamaterials to achieve a specified behavior falls under the category of notoriously intractable inverse problems. To simplify solving the inverse problem, most relevant works represent metamaterials as periodic single unit cell structures repeated in regular lattices. Such representation simplifies modeling and simulation task but at the cost of possibly limiting the range of physical behaviors that can be achieved through the use of more than one unit cell structures. This article outlines a quasi-periodic representation that utilizes more than a single unit cell to generate periodic metamaterials. Additionally, a hierarchical optimization scheme to optimize the generating function for a quasi-periodic structure using the genetic algorithm (GA) and a barrier function interior point method is also sketched to solve the inverse problem. To demonstrate the utility of the proposed hierarchical optimization framework to solve quasi periodic metamaterial inverse problem, a problem in which the objective is to minimize the total strain in the structure while subjected to weight and the total-size constraint is considered. We detail the overall computational approach in which geometric representation, optimization algorithms, and finite element analysis are coupled and report preliminary numerical experiments.

Abstract:Advanced programmable metamaterials with heterogeneous microstructures have become increasingly prevalent in scientific and engineering disciplines attributed to their tunable properties. However, exploring the structure-property relationship in these materials, including forward prediction and inverse design, presents substantial challenges. The inhomogeneous microstructures significantly complicate traditional analytical or simulation-based approaches. Here, we establish a novel framework that integrates the machine learning (ML)-encoded multiscale computational method for forward prediction and Bayesian optimization for inverse design. Unlike prior end-to-end ML methods limited to specific problems, our framework is both load-independent and geometry-independent. This means that a single training session for a constitutive model suffices to tackle various problems directly, eliminating the need for repeated data collection or training. We demonstrate the efficacy and efficiency of this framework using metamaterials with designable elliptical holes or lattice honeycombs microstructures. Leveraging accelerated forward prediction, we can precisely customize the stiffness and shape of metamaterials under diverse loading scenarios, and extend this capability to multi-objective customization seamlessly. Moreover, we achieve topology optimization for stress alleviation at the crack tip, resulting in a significant reduction of Mises stress by up to 41.2

Abstract:The paper briefly reviews the achievements of ISPMS SB RAS in the development of numerical computation methods and models for modeling the mechanical behavior of materials with hierarchical structure in the range of scales from nano to macro. The main stages in the development of several key areas are considered: atomistic modeling at the nanoscale level, continuum numerical methods, and particle method for studying the effect of structure on the behavior and properties of materials at larger spatial and temporal scales. The application of the multiscale approach to the structural modeling and design of metallic and ceramic materials is discussed. Prospects are outlined for transitioning to complete digital twins that link the structure formation process of the material with its final structure, mechanical properties, and mechanical behavior.

Homogenized Models of Mechanical Metamaterials

Abstract:Direct numerical simulations of mechanical metamaterials are prohibitively expensive due to the separation of scales between the lattice and the macrostructural size. Hence, multiscale continuum analysis plays a pivotal role in the computational modeling of metastructures at macroscopic scales. In the present work, we assess the continuum limit of mechanical metamaterials via homogenized models derived rigorously from variational methods. It is shown through multiple examples that micropolar-type effective energies, derived naturally from analysis, properly capture the kinematics of discrete lattices in two and three dimensions. Moreover, the convergence of the discrete energy to the continuum limit is shown numerically. We provide open-source computational implementations for all examples, including both discrete and homogenized models.

Abstract:Hierarchical structures with constituents over multiple length scales are found in various natural materials like bones, shells, spider silk and others, all of which display enhanced quasi-static mechanical properties, such as high specific strength, stiffness and toughness. At the same time, the role of hierarchy on the dynamic behaviour of metamaterials remains largely unexplored. This study assesses the effect of bio-inspired hierarchical organization as well as of viscoelasticity on the wave attenuation properties of continuous mechanical metamaterials. We consider single-phase metamaterials formed by self-similar unit cells with different hierarchical levels and types of hierarchy. Results highlight a number of advantages through the introduction of structural hierarchy. Band gaps relative to the corresponding non-hierarchical structures are mostly preserved, while additional "hierarchically-induced" band gaps appear. Additionally, the hierarchical configuration allows the tuning of the band gap frequencies of regular metamaterial to lower frequencies, with a simultaneous significant reduction of the global structural weight. We show that even small viscoelastic effects, not treated in the current literature, are essential in determining this behaviour. The approach we propose allows the addition of hierarchical elements to existing metamaterial configurations, with the corresponding improvement of the wave damping properties, thus providing indications for the design of structures for practical applications.

Enhanced Cellular Materials through Multiscale, Variable-Section Inner Designs: Mechanical Attributes and Neural Network Modeling

Abstract:In the current work, the mechanical response of multiscale cellular materials with hollow variable-section inner elements is analyzed, combining experimental, numerical and machine learning techniques. At first, the effect of multiscale designs on the macroscale material attributes is quantified as a function of their inner structure. To that scope, analytical, closed-form expressions for the axial and bending inner element-scale stiffness are elaborated. The multiscale metamaterial performance is numerically probed for variable-section, multiscale honeycomb, square and re-entrant star-shaped lattice architectures. It is observed that a substantial normal, bulk and shear specific stiffness increase can be achieved, which differs depending on the upper-scale lattice pattern. Subsequently, extended mechanical datasets are created for the training of machine learning models of the metamaterial performance. Thereupon, neural network (NN) architectures and modeling parameters that can robustly capture the multiscale material response are identified. It is demonstrated that rather low-numerical-cost NN models can assess the complete set of elastic properties with substantial accuracy, providing a direct link between the underlying design parameters and the macroscale metamaterial performance. Moreover, inverse, multi-objective engineering tasks become feasible. It is shown that unified machine-learning-based representation allows for the inverse identification of the inner multiscale structural topology and base material parameters that optimally meet multiple macroscale performance objectives, coupling the NN metamaterial models with genetic algorithm-based optimization schemes.

Abstract:Materials can now be designed and architectured like structural components for targeted mechanical and physical properties. Structures and microstructures should not be studied independently and their design will benefit from a multiscale approach combining nonlinear continuum mechanics approaches and physical descriptions of elasticity, viscoplasticity, phase transformations and damage of microstructures, at various scales. The aim of the workshop was to gather outstanding junior and senior researchers in the various branches of mathematics, physics and engineering sciences suited to address the question of design of materials and structures by means of multiscale discrete and continuum approaches to their constitutive behavior. Examples include atomic or macroscopic lattices, random or periodic cellular materials, smart materials like shape memory alloys, 3D woven composites, acoustic and electromagnetic metamaterials, etc. Modern continuum mechanics relies on sophisticated constitutive laws for anisotropic materials exhibiting elastoviscoplastic behavior, still a field of intense research with new mathematical concepts. In particular size-dependent properties are addressed by resorting to generalized continua such as gradient or micromorphic and phase field models. The latter are attractive for the simulation of microstructure evolution coupled with mechanics, due to thermodynamic and metallurgical processes and damage. Scale transition and homogenization methods for continuous and discrete systems are required for the determination of effective material and structural behavior. Metamaterials are architectured materials specifically designed to achieve certain propagation and dispersion properties of elastic and plastic waves. Optimization strategies for the design of optimal architectures are involved in the design process. Target functions for optimization are now based on multicriteria (stiffness, strength, thermal expansion, transport properties, anisotropy etc.).

Abstract:The recent decades have seen various attempts at accelerating the process of developing materials targeted towards specific applications. The performance required for a particular application leads to the choice of a particular material system whose properties are optimized by manipulating its underlying microstructure through processing. The specific configuration of the structure is then designed by characterizing the material in detail, and using this characterization along with physical principles in system level simulations and optimization. These have been advanced by multiscale modeling of materials, high-throughput experimentations, materials data-bases, topology optimization and other ideas. Still, developing materials for extreme applications involving large deformation, high strain rates and high temperatures remains a challenge. This article reviews a number of recent methods that advance the goal of designing materials targeted by specific applications.

Abstract:Abstract Topology optimization has been proved to be an efficient tool for structural design. In recent years, the focus of structural topology optimization has been shifting from single material continuum structures to multimaterial and multiscale structures. This paper aims at devising a numerical scheme for designing bionic structures by combining a two-stage parametric level set topology optimization with the conformal mapping method. At the first stage, the macro-structural topology and the effective material properties are optimized simultaneously. At the second stage, another structural topology optimization is carried out to identify the exact layout of the metamaterial at the mesoscale. The achieved structure and metamaterial designs are further synthesized to form a multiscale structure using conformal mapping, which mimics the bionic structures with “orderly chaos” features. In this research, a multi-control-point conformal mapping (MCM) based on Ricci flow is proposed. Compared with conventional conformal mapping with only four control points, the proposed MCM scheme can provide more flexibility and adaptivity in handling complex geometries. To make the effective mechanical properties of the metamaterials invariant after conformal mapping, a variable-thickness structure method is proposed. Three 2D numerical examples using MCM schemes are presented, and their results and performances are compared. The achieved multimaterial multiscale structure models are characterized by the “orderly chaos” features of bionic structures while possessing the desired performance.

Abstract:Exploring the dynamical response of mechanical metamaterials has gathered increasing attention in the last decades, enabling the design of microstructures exotically interacting with elastic waves (focusing, channeling, band-gaps, negative refraction, cloaking, and many more). Yet, the application and use of such metamaterials in engineering practice is still deficient due to the lack of effective models unveiling metamaterials' interactions with more classical materials at finite scales. In this paper, we show that the relaxed micromorphic model can bring an answer to this open problem and can be effectively used to explore and optimize metamaterials' structures consisting of metamaterials' and classical materials' bricks of finite size. We investigate two examples, namely a double-shield structure that can be used to widen the frequency range for which the internal region can be protected and a multiple-shield structure that optimizes both the screening of the regions internal to the single shields and of the zones exterior to the shields themselves. The exploration of these complex meta-structures has been enabled by the finite element implementation of the relaxed micromorphic model that predicts their response at a fraction of the computational cost when compared to classical simulations.
Design of multifunctional metamaterials using optimization

Abstract:This paper explores the use of optimization to design multifunctional metamaterials, and proposes a methodology for constructing a design envelope of potential properties. A thermal-mechanical metamaterial, proposed by Ai and Gao (2017), is used as the subject of the study. The properties of the metamaterial are computed using finite element-based periodic homogenization, which is implemented in Abaqus utilizing an open-source plugin (EasyPBC). Several optimization problems are solved using a particle swarm-based optimization method from the pyOpt package. A series of constrained optimization problems are used to construct a design envelop of potential properties. The design envelope more fully captures the potential of the metamaterial, compared with the current practice of using parametric studies. This is because the optimizer can change all parameters simultaneously to find the optimal design. This demonstrates the potential of using an optimization-based approach for designing and exploring multifunctional metamaterial properties. This proposed approach is general and can be applied to any metamaterial design, assuming an accurate numerical model exists to evaluate its properties.

Abstract:Abstract In this work, an experimentally validated multiscale modeling framework for additively manufactured shell lattice structures with graded parameters is introduced. It is exemplified in application to the Schwarz primitive triply periodic minimal surface microstructure and 3D printing using masked stereolithography of a photopolymer material. The systematic procedure starts with the characterization of a hyperelastic material model for the 3D printed material. This constitutive model is then employed in the finite element simulation of shell lattices at finite deformations. The computational model is validated with experimental compression tests of printed lattice structures. In this way, the numerical convergence behavior and size dependence of the model are assessed, and the range in which it is reasonable to assume linear elastic behavior is determined. Then, representative volume elements subject to periodic boundary conditions are simulated to homogenize the mechanical behavior of Schwarz primitives with varying aspect ratios and shell thicknesses. Subsequently, the parameterized effective linear elasticity tensor of the metamaterial is represented by a physics-augmented neural network model. With this constitutive model, functionally graded shell lattice structures with varying microstructural parameters are simulated as macroscale continua using finite element and differential quadrature methods. The accuracy, reliability and effectiveness of this multiscale simulation approach are investigated and discussed. Overall, it is shown that this experimentally validated multiscale simulation framework, which is likewise applicable to other shell-like metamaterials, facilitates the design of functionally graded structures through additive manufacturing. Abstract:Natural mechanical materials, such as bamboo and bone, often exhibit superior specific mechanical properties due to their hierarchical porous architectures. Using the principle of hierarchy as inspiration can facilitate the development of hierarchical mechanical metamaterials (HMMs) across multiple length scales via 3D printing. In this work, we propose self-similar HMMs that combine octet-truss (OCT) architecture as the first and second orders, with cubic architecture as the third or more orders. These HMMs were fabricated using stereolithography 3D printing, with the length sizes ranging from approximately 200 μm to the centimeter scale. The compressive stress–strain behaviors of HMMs exhibit a zigzag characteristic, and the toughness and energy absorption can be significantly enhanced by the hierarchical architecture. The compressive moduli are comparable to that of natural materials, and the strengths are superior to that of most polymer/metal foams, alumina hollow/carbon lattices, and other natural materials. Furthermore, the flexural stress–strain curves exhibit a nonlinear behavior, which can be attributed to the hierarchical architecture and local damage propagation. The relatively high mechanical properties can be attributed to the synergistic effect of the stretch-dominated OCT architecture and the bending-dominated cube architecture. Lastly, an ultralight HMM-integrated unmanned aerial vehicle (HMM-UAV) was successfully designed and printed. The HMM-UAV is ∼85% lighter than its bulk counterpart, remarkably extending the flight duration time (∼53%). This work not only provides an effective design strategy for HMMs but also further expands the application benchmark of HMMs.

Abstract:Shape morphing and the possibility of having control over mechanical properties via designed deformations have attracted a lot of attention in the materials community and led to a variety of applications with an emphasis on the space industry. However, current materials normally do not allow to have a full control over the deformation pattern and often fail to replicate such behavior at low scales which is essential in flexible electronics. Thus, in this paper, novel 2D and 3D microscopic hierarchical mechanical metamaterials using mutually-competing substructures within the system that are capable of exhibiting a broad range of the highly unusual auxetic behavior are proposed. Using experiments (3D microprinted polymers) supported by computer simulations, it is shown that such ability can be controlled through geometric design parameters. Finally it is demonstrated that the considered structure can form a composite capable of shape morphing allowing it to deform to a predefined shape.

Reduced Order Modeling of Dynamic Mechanical Metamaterials for Analysis of Infinite and Finite Systems

Abstract:Abstract Dynamic mechanical metamaterials (MMs) are artificial media composed of periodic micro-structures, designed to manipulate wave propagation. Modeling and designing MMs can be computationally demanding due to the broad design space spanned by the geometric and material parameters. This work aims to develop a generalized reduced order modeling approach for determining MM dynamics in low frequency ranges with accuracy and speed, using a limited number of parameters and small matrices. The MM unit cells are treated as assemblies of structural elements with discrete degrees-of-freedom, whose effective stiffness and inertia are determined by optimizing energy criteria based on continuum results derived from a small number of eigen-study simulations. This proposed approach offers a parameterized and discretized representation of MM systems, which leads to fast and accurate computation of eigen-study results for periodic arrays, as well as dynamic responses in time domain for finite-sized arrays. The high computational efficiency and physical accuracy of this method will help streamline the modeling process and aid in design discovery and optimization, especially in combination with machine learning and data-driven techniques.

Designing Hierarchical Metamaterials by Topology Analysis with Tailored Poisson’s Ratio and Young’s Modulus

Abstract:In this work, we present an innovative three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical design strategy to systematically summarize the configuration characteristics of existing cellular structures and propose a novel class of mechanical metamaterials based on topology analysis, which have tailored Poisson’s ratio and Young’s modulus. Theoretical, numerical and experimental analyses were conducted to reveal the basic mechanical properties of the metamaterials. And these results agree very well which validate the correctness of the theories. Samples of the proposed structures made of Nylon were fabricated through 3D printing technology to carry out compression tests and finite element analysis (FEA) were performed to give an insight into the mechanical response. Experimental and numerical results revealed that the proposed 3D second-order hierarchical metamaterials can achieve a series of special combinations of Poisson’s ratio in three perpendicular directions. The sign and magnitude of Poisson’s ratio can be tailored by appropriately adjusting the first and second order configurations and their geometrical parameters. Meanwhile, systemic analysis and comparison reveal that relative Young’s modulus is contingent on deformation pattern, i.e., axial-deformation dominated stiffness is much higher than bending-dominated stiffness. Similar to Poisson’s ratio, the magnitude of Young’s modulus can be tailored by geometrical parameters and first and second order configurations in a relative large range in the case of given Poisson's ratio (sign and magnitude). This work can provide useful reference for the design, fabrication and analysis of 3D metamaterials with novel properties and functions, particularly with auxetic behavior, which are promising in some technical applications.

Abstract:Abstract Thanks to the advancement of additive manufacturing technologies, mechanical metamaterials have attracted a great deal of attention in recent years. With the employment of such technologies, materials with exceptional or tailored mechanical properties can be easily manufactured mainly by 3D printing of different microstructures rather than by changing the material composition. These lattice materials can provide remarkable material properties in spite of being significantly lighter than typical bulk materials. Due to the large number of degrees of freedom for engineering structures, single‐scale numerical simulation of such cellular materials is computationally demanding. Therefore, two‐scale computational homogenization approaches, such as FE2 and FE‐FFT, can perform a key role in the cost‐effective numerical modeling of metamaterials. Two‐scale computational homogenization methods rely on solving a boundary value problem (BVP) for each of the macroscopic and microscopic scales in a nested procedure. Although representative homogenization techniques have been widely used to study materials with heterogeneous microstructures, there still exist some challenges in their employment for lattice materials. This study addresses main challenges in two‐scale‐based computational homogenization methods for numerical modeling of mechanical metamaterials. High dependence of convergence rate and accuracy on phase contrast for fast Fourier transform (FFT) solvers and comparable macro and micro characteristic lengths in metamaterials (i.e. the applicability of the principle of scale separation) are some examples of such challenges.
