Abstract:Nitrogen-containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (NPAHs) are important molecules for astrochemistry and prebiotic chemistry, as their occurrence spans from interstellar molecular clouds to planetary systems. Their formation has been previously explored in gas phase experiments, but the role of solid-state chemical reactions in their formation under cryogenic conditions remains elusive. Here, we explore the formation of NPAHs through vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) irradiation of pyridine:acetylene ices in amorphous and co-crystalline phases, with the aim to simulate conditions relevant to the interstellar medium and Titan's atmosphere. Our results show that the synthesis of ethynylpyridines from VUV-irradiated pyridine:acetylene amorphous ices is achievable at 18 K. In the co-crystal phase, photolysis at 110 K leads to the formation of NPAHs such as quinolizinium and precursors, reflecting a dynamical system under our conditions. In contrast, irradiation at 90 K under stable conditions did not produce volatile photoproducts. These results suggest that such chemical processes can occur in Titan's atmosphere and potentially in its stratosphere, where the co-condensation of these molecules can form composite ices. Concurrently, the formation of stable co-crystals can influence the depletion rates of pyridine, which suggests that these heterocycles can be preserved and potentially delivered to Titan's surface. Our findings provide insights into the molecular diversity and chemical evolution of organic matter on Titan, which will be crucial for future exploration, such as the Dragonfly mission in its search for higher-order organics derived from pyridine precursors on Titan's surface.

According to various studies, diacetylene (C$_4$H$_2$) condenses below 100 km where it can be exposed to ultraviolet radiation. We studied experimentally the photochemistry of diacetylene ice (C$_4$H$_2$) to evaluate its potential role in the lower altitude photochemistry of Titan's atmospheric ices. Methods. C$_4$H$_2$ ice films were irradiated with near-ultraviolet (near-UV) photons ( {\lambda} > 300 nm) with different UV sources to assess the impact of the wavelengths of photons on the photochemistry of C$_4$H$_2$. The evolution of the ice's composition was monitored using spectroscopic techniques. Our results reveal that diacetylene ice is reactive through singlet-triplet absorption, similar to the photochemistry of other organic ices of Titan (such as dicyanoacetylene C$_4$N$_2$ ice) that we investigated previously. Several chemical processes occurred during the photolysis: the hydrogenation of C$_4$H$_2$ to form other C$_4$ hydrocarbons (vinylacetylene C$_4$H$_4$ to butane C$_4$H$_{10}$); the formation of larger and highly polymerizable hydrocarbons, such as triacetylene (C$_6$H$_2$); and the formation of an organic polymer that is stable at room temperature. The nondetection of diacetylene ice in Titan's atmosphere or surface could be rationalized based on our experimental results that C$_4$H$_2$ is photochemically highly reactive in the solid phase when exposed to near-UV radiation that reaches Titan's lower altitudes and surface. C$_4$H$_2$ may be one of the key molecules promoting the chemistry in the ices and aerosols of Titan's haze layers, especially in the case of co-condensation with other organic volatiles, with which it could initiate more complex solid-phase chemistry.

Abstract:Volatile organic molecules formed by photochemistry in the upper atmosphere of Titan can undergo condensation as pure ices in the stratosphere and the troposphere as well as condense as ice layers onto the organic aerosols that are visible as the haze layers of Titan. As solar photons penetrate through Titan s atmosphere, shorter-wavelength photons are attenuated and longerwavelength photons make it into the lower altitudes, where aerosols become abundant. We conducted an experimental study to evaluate the long wavelength ( > 300 nm) photo-reactivity of these ices accreted on the Titan aerosol-analogs (also known as tholins) made in the laboratory. We have focused on acetylene, the third most abundant hydrocarbon in Titan s atmosphere after CH4 and C2H6. Further, acetylene is the most abundant unsaturated hydrocarbon in Titan s atmosphere. Our results indicate that the aerosols can act as activation centers to drive the photoreactivity of acetylene with the aerosols at the accretion interface at wavelengths where acetylene-ice alone does not show photoreactivity. We found that along with photochemistry, photodesorption plays an important role. We observed that about 15% of the initial acetylene is photodesorbed, with a photodesorption rate of (2.1 +/- 0.2) x 10-6 <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://molecules.photon" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>-1 at 355 nm. This photodesorption is wavelength-dependent, confirming that it is mediated by the UV absorption of the aerosol analogues, similar to photochemistry. We conclude that the UV-Vis properties of aerosols would determine how they evolve further in Titan s atmosphere and on the surface through photochemical alterations involving longer wavelength photons.

A new astrobiological model of the atmosphere of Titan

Abstract:We present results of an investigation into the formation of nitrogen-bearing molecules in the atmosphere of Titan. We extend a previous model (Li et al. 2015, 2016) to cover the region below the tropopause, so the new model treats the atmosphere from Titan's surface to an altitude of 1500 km. We consider the effects of condensation and sublimation using a continuous, numerically stable method. This is coupled with parameterized treatments of the sedimentation of the aerosols and their condensates, and the formation of haze particles. These processes affect the abundances of heavier species such as the nitrogen-bearing molecules, but have less effect on the abundances of lighter molecules. Removal of molecules to form aerosols also plays a role in determining the mixing ratios, in particular of HNC, HC3N and HCN. We find good agreement with the recently detected mixing ratios of C2H5CN, with condensation playing an important role in determining the abundance of this molecule below 500 km. Of particular interest is the chemistry of acrylonitrile (C2H3CN) which has been suggested by Stevenson et al. (2015) as a molecule that could form biological membranes in an oxygen-deficient environment. With the inclusion of haze formation we find good agreement of our model predictions of acrylonitrile with the available observations.

Abstract:A benzene/acetylene/hydrogen cyanide co-crystal has been predicted using a periodic density functional theory approach based on the empirical structure of the 1:1 benzene and acetylene co-crystal. This example of a stable ternary-phase systema three-component co-crystal comprising small neutral moleculesfinds relevance as a possible Titan aerosol composition formed by the condensation of abundant volatile photoproducts in the lower stratosphere. Calculated thermochemical data confirm the 2C6H6:C2H2:HCN co-crystal as a viable laboratory target, with free and cohesive energies competitive with those of binary-phase ices. Harmonic vibrational frequencies computed for the periodic system indicate that the co-crystal can be identified using low-frequency far-infrared or Raman spectroscopy, where distinctive intermolecular lattice signatures are predicted to lie. The geometry of the individual components within the unit cell appears optimal to promote ring-expansion chemistry upon ultraviolet or fast particle irradiation of the molecular co-crystal surface. Such co-crystal systems are unexplored in laboratory simulations of astrophysical ices and may have important implications for the solid-state formation of complex organic molecules in Titan’s atmosphere.

Abstract:The role of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and Nitrogen containing PAH (PANH) as intermediates of aerosol production in the atmosphere of Titan has been a subject of controversy for a long time. An analysis of the atmospheric emission band observed by the Visible and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (VIMS) at 3.28 micrometer suggests the presence of neutral polycyclic aromatic species in the upper atmosphere of Titan. These molecules are seen as the counter part of negative and positive aromatics ions suspected by the Plasma Spectrometer onboard the Cassini spacecraft, but the low resolution of the instrument hinders any molecular speciation. In this work we investigate the specific aromatic content of Titan's atmospheric aerosols through laboratory simulations. We report here the selective detection of aromatic compounds in tholins, Titan's aerosol analogues, produced with a capacitively coupled plasma in a N2:CH4 95:5 gas mixture. For this purpose, Two-Step Laser Desorption Ionization Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (L2DI-TOF-MS) technique is used to analyze the so produced analogues. This analytical technique is based on the ionization of molecules by Resonance Enhanced Multi-Photon Ionization (REMPI) using a {\lambda}=248 nm wavelength laser which is selective for aromatic species. This allows for the selective identification of compounds having at least one aromatic ring. Our experiments show that tholins contain a trace amount of small PAHs with one to three aromatic rings. Nitrogen containing PAHs (PANHs) are also detected as constituents of tholins. Molecules relevant to astrobiology are detected as is the case of the substituted DNA base adenine.

Abstract:Titan, Saturn's largest moon, has a plethora of organic compounds in the atmosphere and on the surface that interact with each other. Cryominerals such as co-crystals may influence the geologic processes and chemical composition of Titan's surface, which in turn informs our understanding of how Titan may have evolved, how the surface is continuing to change, as well as the extent of Titan's habitability. Previous work has shown that a pyridine:acetylene (1:1) co-crystal forms under specific temperatures and experimental conditions; however, this has not yet been demonstrated under Titan-relevant conditions. Our work here demonstrates that the pyridine:acetylene co-crystal is stable from 90 K, Titan's average surface temperature, up to 180 K under an atmosphere of N2. In particular, the co-crystal forms via liquid-solid interactions within minutes upon mixing of the constituents at 150 K, as evidenced by distinct, new Raman bands and band shifts. XRD results indicate moderate anisotropic thermal expansion (about 0.5% - 1.1%) along the three principal axes between 90-150 K. Additionally, the co-crystal is detectable after being exposed to liquid ethane, implying stability in a residual ethane "wetting" scenario on Titan. These results suggest that the pyridine:acetylene co-crystal could form in specific geologic contexts on Titan that allow for warm environments in which liquid pyridine could persist, and as such, this cryomineral may preserve evidence of impact, cryovolcanism, or subsurface transport in surface materials.

Abstract:Benzene has been detected in Titan's atmosphere, the Saturn's largest moon, and it is known to condense when it reaches the stratosphere to form ice, which is submitted to low ultraviolet (UV) radiation. In a previous work, we put in evidence that the irradiation of benzene ice at λ > 230 nm induces the formation of volatile photoproducts, in particular, fulvene (a benzene isomer) and a solid residue. In this work, we study the influence of pressure on the residue formation after benzene ice's irradiation and its characterization using infrared (IR), Raman, and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) methods. We show that the residue obtained during the increase of temperature performed at 1 mbar is dominated by CH sp2 groups, whereas the one obtained at 10-6 mbar contains an equivalent proportion of CH sp2 and sp3. Polyphenyls with up to three rings are unambiguously identified by GC-MS in all of the residues formed.

Abstract:Benzene ice contributes to an emission feature detected by the Cassini Composite InfraRed Spectrometer (CIRS) near 682 cm^{-1} in Titan's late southern fall polar stratosphere. It is as well one of the dominant components of the CIRS-observed High Altitude South Polar (HASP) ice cloud observed in Titan's mid stratosphere during late southern fall. Titan's stratosphere exhibits significant seasonal changes with temperatures that spatially vary with seasons. A quantitative analysis of the chemical composition of infrared emission spectra of Titan's stratospheric ice clouds relies on consistent and detailed laboratory transmittance spectra obtained at numerous temperatures. However, there is a substantial lack of experimental data on the spectroscopic and optical properties of benzene ice and its temperature dependence, especially at Titan-relevant stratospheric conditions. We have therefore analyzed in laboratory the spectral characteristics and evolution of benzene ice's vibrational modes at deposition temperatures ranging from 15 K to 130 K, from the far- to mid-IR spectral region (50 - 8000 cm^{-1}). We have determined the amorphous to crystalline phase transition of benzene ice and identified that a complete crystallization is achieved for deposition temperatures between 120 K and 130 K. We have also measured the real and imaginary parts of the ice complex refractive index of benzene ice from 15 K to 130 K. Our experimental results significantly extend the current state of knowledge on the deposition temperature dependence of benzene ice over a broad infrared spectral range, and provide useful new data for the analysis and interpretation of Titan-observed spectra.

Abstract:Numerous studies have been carried out to characterize the chemical composition of laboratory analogues of Titan aerosols (tholins), but their molecular composition as well as their structure are still poorly known. If pyrolysis gas chromatography mass spectrometry (pyr-GCMS) has been used for years to give clues about this composition, the highly disparate results obtained can be attributed to the analytical conditions used and/or to differences in the nature of the analogues studied. In order to have a better description of Titan tholins molecular composition, we led a systematic analysis of these materials using pyr-GCMS with two major objectives: (i) exploring the analytical parameters to estimate the biases this technique can induce and to find an optimum for analyses allowing the detection of a wide range of compounds and thus a characterization of the tholins composition as comprehensive as possible, and (ii) highlighting the role of the CH4 ratio in the gaseous reactive medium on the tholins molecular structure. With this aim, we used a radio-frequency plasma discharge to synthetize tholins with different concentrations of CH4 diluted in N2. The samples were systematically pyrolyzed from 200 to 600{\deg}C. The extracted gases were then analyzed by GCMS for their molecular identification.
Modeling transmission windows in Titan's lower troposphere: Implications for infrared spectrometers aboard future aerial and surface missions

Abstract:From orbit, the visibility of Titan's surface is limited to a handful of narrow spectral windows in the near-infrared (near-IR), primarily from the absorption of methane gas. This has limited the ability to identify specific compounds on the surface -- to date Titan's bulk surface composition remains unknown. Further, understanding of the surface composition would provide insight into geologic processes, photochemical production and evolution, and the biological potential of Titan's surface. One approach to obtain wider spectral coverage with which to study Titan's surface is by decreasing the integrated column of absorbers (primarily methane) and scatterers between the observer and the surface. This is only possible if future missions operate at lower altitudes in Titan's atmosphere. Herein, we use a radiative transfer model to measure in detail the absorption through Titan's atmosphere from different mission altitudes, and consider the impacts this would have for interpreting reflectance measurements of Titan's surface. Over our modeled spectral range of 0.4 - 10 micron, we find that increases in the width of the transmission windows as large as 317% can be obtained for missions performing remote observations at the surface. However, any appreciable widening of the windows requires onboard illumination. Further, we make note of possible surface compounds that are not currently observable from orbit, but could be identified using the wider windows at low altitudes. These range from simple nitriles such as cyanoacetylene, to building blocks of amino acids such as urea. Finally, we discuss the implications that the identifications of these compounds would have for Titan science.

Vertical compositional variations of liquid hydrocarbons in Titan's alkanofers

Abstract:According to clues left by the Cassini mission, Titan, one of the two Solar System bodies with a hydrologic cycle, may harbor liquid hydrocarbon-based analogs of our terrestrial aquifers, referred to as "alkanofers". On the Earth, petroleum and natural gas reservoirs show a vertical gradient in chemical composition, established over geological timescales. In this work, we aim to investigate the conditions under which Titan's processes could lead to similar situations. We built numerical models including barodiffusion and thermodiffusion (Soret's effect) in N_2+CH_4+C_2H_6 liquid mixtures, which are relevant for Titan's possible alkanofers. Our main assumption is the existence of reservoirs of liquids trapped in a porous matrix with low permeability. Due to the small size of the molecule, nitrogen seems to be more sensitive to gravity than ethane, even if the latter has a slightly larger mass. This behavior, noticed for an isothermal crust, is reinforced by the presence of a geothermal gradient. Vertical composition gradients, formed over timescales of between a fraction of a mega-year to several tens of mega-years, are not influenced by molecular diffusion coefficients. We find that ethane does not accumulate at the bottom of the alkanofers under diffusion, leaving the question of why ethane is not observed on Titan's surface unresolved. If the alkanofer liquid was in contact with water-ice, we checked that N_2 did not, in general, impede the clathration of C_2H_6, except in some layers. Interestingly, we found that noble gases could easily accumulate at the bottom of an alkanofer.

Material Properties of Organic Liquids, Ices, and Hazes on Titan

Abstract:Titan has a diverse range of materials in its atmosphere and on its surface: the simple organics that reside in various phases (gas, liquid, and ice) and the solid complex refractory organics that form Titan's haze layers. These materials all actively participate in various physical processes on Titan, and many material properties are found to be important in shaping these processes. Future in situ explorations on Titan would likely encounter a range of materials, and a comprehensive database to archive the material properties of all possible material candidates will be needed. Here, we summarize several important material properties of the organic liquids, ices, and the refractory hazes on Titan that are available in the literature and/or that we have computed. These properties include thermodynamic properties (phase-change points, sublimation and vaporization saturation vapor pressure, and latent heat), and physical properties (organic liquid densities and organic ice and haze densities). We have developed a new database to provide a repository for these data and make them available to the science community. These data can be used as inputs for various theoretical models to interpret current and future remote sensing and in situ atmospheric and surface measurements on Titan. The material properties of the simple organics may also be applicable to giant planets and icy bodies in the outer solar system, interstellar medium, protoplanetary disks, and exoplanets.

Abstract:The Cassini/Huygens mission provided new insights on the chemistry of the upper atmosphere of Titan. The presence of large molecules and ions (>100 s of amu) detected by Cassini at high altitude was not expected, and questions the original assumptions regarding the aerosol formation pathways. From recent laboratory studies, it has been shown that the inclusion of trace amounts of aromatic species drastically impacts the chemistry of aerosol formation and induces observable changes in the properties of the aerosols. In the present work we focus on the effect of one of the simplest nitrogenous aromatics, pyridine (C5H5N), on the infrared signature of Titan s aerosol analogs. We introduce initial gas mixtures of: (i) N2-C5H5N (100%/250ppm), (ii) N2-CH4-C5H5N (99%/1%/250ppm), (iii) N2-CH4 (99%/1%) in a cold plasma discharge. The material produced, herein called tholins, is then analyzed by mid-infrared spectroscopy. When adding pyridine in the discharge, the tholins produced present an aromatic signature in the 4.1-5.3 micron (1850-2450 cm-1) spectral region, attributed to overtones of aromatic C-H out-of-plane bending vibrations. We also observe a spectral shift of the nitrile and iso-nitrile absorption band with the inclusion of pyridine in the gas mixture. These results could help to investigate the data obtained at Titan by the Cassini/VIMS instrument in the 1-5 micron infrared window
The Fate of Simple Organics on Titan's Surface: A Theoretical Perspective

Abstract:Atmospheric photochemistry on Titan continuously transforms methane and nitrogen gases into various organic compounds. This study explores the fate of these molecules when they land on Titan's surface. Our analytical exploration reveals that most simple organics found in Titan's atmosphere, including all nitriles, triple-bonded hydrocarbons, and benzene, land as solids. Only a few compounds are in the liquid phase, while only ethylene remains gaseous. For the simple organics that land as solids, we further examine their interactions with Titan's lake liquids. Utilizing principles of buoyancy, we found that flotation can be achieved via porosity-induced (25-60% porosity) or capillary force-induced buoyancy for HCN ices on ethane-rich lakes. Otherwise, these ices would sink and become lakebed sediments. By evaluating the timescale of flotation, our findings suggest that porosity-induced flotation of millimeter-sized and larger sediments is the only plausible mechanism for floating solids to explain the transient "magic islands" phenomena on Titan's lakes.

In Situ Measurements of the Size and Density of Titan Aerosol Analogues

Abstract:The organic haze produced from complex CH4/N2 chemistry in the atmosphere of Titan plays an important role in processes that occur in the atmosphere and on its surface. The haze particles act as condensation nuclei and are therefore involved in Titan's methane hydrological cycle. They also may behave like sediment on Titan's surface and participate in both fluvial and aeolian processes. Models that seek to understand these processes require information about the physical properties of the particles including their size and density. Although measurements obtained by Cassini-Huygens have placed constraints on the size of the haze particles, their densities remain unknown. We have conducted a series of Titan atmosphere simulation experiments and measured the size, number density, and particle density of Titan aerosol analogues, or tholins, for CH4 concentrations from 0.01% to 10% using two different energy sources, spark discharge and UV. We find that the densities currently in use by many Titan models are higher than the measured densities of our tholins.

Abstract:Prior to the arrival of the Cassini-Huygens spacecraft, aerosol production in Titan’s atmosphere was believed to begin in the stratosphere where chemical processes are predominantly initiated by far ultraviolet (FUV) radiation. However, measurements taken by the Cassini Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrograph (UVIS) and Cassini Plasma Spectrometer (CAPS) indicate that haze formation initiates in the thermosphere where there is a greater flux of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) photons and energetic particles available to initiate chemical reactions, including the destruction of N2. The discovery of previously unpredicted nitrogen species in measurements of Titan’s atmosphere by the Cassini Ion and Neutral Mass Spectrometer (INMS) indicates that nitrogen participates in the chemistry to a much greater extent than was appreciated before Cassini. The degree of nitrogen incorporation in the haze particles is important for understanding the diversity of molecules that may be present in Titan’s atmosphere and on its surface. We have conducted a series of Titan atmosphere simulation experiments using either spark discharge (Tesla coil) or FUV photons (deuterium lamp) to initiate chemistry in CH4/N2 gas mixtures ranging from 0.01% CH4/99.99% N2 to 10% CH4/90% N2. We obtained in situ real-time measurements using a high-resolution time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometer (HR-ToF-AMS) to measure the particle composition as a function of particle size and a proton-transfer ion-trap mass spectrometer (PIT-MS) to measure the composition of gas phase products. These two techniques allow us to investigate the effect of energy source and initial CH4 concentration on the degree of nitrogen incorporation in both the gas and solid phase products. The results presented here confirm that FUV photons produce not only solid phase nitrogen bearing products but also gas phase nitrogen species. We find that in both the gas and solid phase, nitrogen is found in nitriles rather than amines and that both the gas phase and solid phase products are composed primarily of molecules with a low degree of aromaticity. The UV experiments reproduce the absolute abundances measured in Titan’s stratosphere for a number of gas phase species including C4H2, C6H6, HCN, CH3CN, HC3N, and C2H5CN.

Abstract:Of the C$_{3}$H$_{x}$ hydrocarbons, propane (C${_3}$H$_{8}$) and propyne (methylacetylene, CH$_{3}$C$_{2}$H) were first detected in Titan's atmosphere during the Voyager 1 flyby in 1980. Propene (propylene, C$_{3}$H$_{6}$) was first detected in 2013 with data from the Composite InfraRed Spectrometer (CIRS) instrument on Cassini. We present the first measured abundance profiles of propene on Titan from radiative transfer modeling, and compare our measurements to predictions derived from several photochemical models. Near the equator, propene is observed to have a peak abundance of 10 ppbv at a pressure of 0.2 mbar. Several photochemical models predict the amount at this pressure to be in the range 0.3 - 1 ppbv and also show a local minimum near 0.2 mbar which we do not see in our measurements. We also see that propene follows a different latitudinal trend than the other C$_{3}$ molecules. While propane and propyne concentrate near the winter pole, transported via a global convective cell, propene is most abundant above the equator. We retrieve vertical abundances profiles between 125 km and 375 km for these gases for latitude averages between 60$^{\circ}$S to 20$^{\circ}$S, 20$^{\circ}$S to 20$^{\circ}$N, and 20$^{\circ}$N to 60$^{\circ}$N over two time periods, 2004 through 2009 representing Titan's atmosphere before the 2009 equinox, and 2012 through 2015 representing time after the equinox. Additionally, using newly corrected line data, we determined an updated upper limit for allene (propadiene, CH$_{2}$CCH$_{2}$, the isomer of propyne). We claim a 3-$\sigma$ upper limit mixing ratio of 2.5$\times$10$^{-9}$ within 30$^\circ$ of the equator. The measurements we present will further constrain photochemical models by refining reaction rates and the transport of these gases throughout Titan's atmosphere.
Noncovalent Interactions Steer the Formation of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons

Abstract:Aromatic molecules play an important role in the chemistry of astronomical environments such as the cold interstellar medium (ISM) and (exo)planetary atmospheres. The observed abundances of (polycyclic) aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzonitrile and cyanonaphthalenes are, however, highly underestimated by astrochemical models. This demonstrates the need for more experimentally verified reaction pathways. The low-temperature ion-molecule reaction of benzonitrile•+ with acetylene is studied here using a multifaceted approach involving kinetics and spectroscopic probing of the reaction products. A fast radiative association reaction via an in situ experimentally observed prereactive complex shows the importance of noncovalent interactions in steering the pathway during cold ion-molecule reactions. Product structures of subsequent reactions are unambiguously identified using infrared action spectroscopy and reveal the formation of nitrogen-containing, linked bicyclic structures such as phenylpyridine•+ and benzo-N-pentalene+ structures. The results, contradicting earlier assumptions on the product structure, demonstrate the importance of spectroscopic probing of reaction products and emphasize the possible formation of linked bicyclic molecules and benzo-N-pentalene+ structures in astronomical environments.
