Abstract:Na 2 FeP 2 O 7 cathode material exhibits great promise in sodium ion batteries (SIBs), due to its low cost and high structural durability. Nevertheless, the intrinsically poor electronic conductivity and sluggish Na + diffusion kinetics of Na 2 FeP 2 O 7 hinder its practical application. Herein, a synergistic cooperation of continuous amorphous carbon layer and optimized Co doping strategy is proposed to design high -performance SIB cathode (Co-doped Na 2 FeP 2 O 7 /C) via in -situ sol-gel method, where Co integration significantly enhances both the electronic conductivity and the Na + diffusion kinetics, as confirmed by the combination of ex/in-situ characterizations and density functional theory calculations. Valuably, the synergy of amorphous carbon layer and appropriate Co doping restrains the structure stress to "zero-strain", Which remains beneficial for 0.10Co-NFO@C to display high capacity of 96.12 mAh g -1 at 0.05C and a high -rate capacity of 61.75 mAh g -1 at 60C with the capacity retention of 79.9% after 5000 cycles. Moreover, optimized Co-doped Na 2 FeP 2 O 7 /C also shows outstanding cycling performance and rate capability when assembled into full batteries (hard carbon as the anode), demonstrating a reversible capacity of -110.9 mAh g -1 at 50 mA g -1 , and a respectable capacity retention 78.0% at 500 mA g -1 for 500 cycles. The strategy inspires new advances towards zero-strained cathode materials for high performance SIBs.

Abstract:In this work, N and S co-doped carbon nanofibers coated with cobalt sulfide nanoparticles (CoSx/N-SCFs) were synthesized by a simple method as anode materials for Li+/Na+ storage. The cobalt sulfide nanoparticles are uniformly embedded in carbon nanofibers in this composite, which effectively shortens the Li+/Na+ diffusion distance and buffers the volume expansion caused by discharge/charge. Besides, the doped N and S improve the conductivity of the carbon nanofibers and expand the carbon interplanar spacing, which facilitates the diffusion of Li+/Na+. The obtained CoSx/N-SCFs electrode shows an excellent reversible capacity of 761.3 mAh g−1 after 1000 cycles at 2 A g−1 for lithium storage and a reversible capacity of 505.1 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles at 100 mA g−1 for sodium storage. Density functional theory calculations further demonstrate that the N, S co-doping increases the electronic conductivity of carbon matrix and reduces Li+/Na+ diffusion barrier, thus effectively enhancing the adsorption of Li+/Na+. This work provides an effective method for synthesizing metal sulfide/carbon nanocomposites as high-performance anode materials.

Abstract:Utilized Zn/Co-based metal-organic framework, we successfully fabricate 1D N-doped porous carbon nanofibers anchoring amorphous and graphite carbon-encapsulated CoS2 nanoparticles, using a facile electrospinning strategy combined with annealing treatment. Remarkably, the composite as superior anode for sodium ion battery is rationally designed, and also exhibit enhanced Na-storage performance. The composite shows a large specific capacity of 876 mAh g−1 at 100 mA g−1 in the initial cycles and an outstanding long-term performance (148 mAh g−1 at a current density of 3.2 A g−1 over 1000 cycles). The improved electrochemical performance is ascribed to the 1D porous carbon nanofibers structure and the amorphous and graphite carbon coating, which can relatively inhibit agglomeration of CoS2 nanoparticles, mitigate the volume of the material changes in the process of circulation and provide stabilized electrical conductivity. This research paves the way for extending the 1D metal sulfides and metal-organic framework composites toward potential applications.

Abstract:Cobalt sulfide (CoS2) is a promising anode material for high-performance sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) because of its low cost, excellent electrical conductivity, and high theoretical capacity. The practical implementation of a CoS2 anode, however, is still hindered by fast capacity decay and low power density caused by its huge volume expansion during the charging/discharging process. Herein, we developed a low-cost, facile and large-scale method to fabricate a nitrogen-doped carbon-layer-constrained structured CoS2/carbon nanotubes (NC@CoS2@CNTs) hybrid with a novel morphology for high-performance SIBs. The hybrid electrode has reversible specific capacities of 669 and 334 mAh g(-1) at the current densities of 200 mA g(-1) and 5000 mA g(-1), respectively, and an unprecedented cycling stability of approximately 0.014 % capacity decay per cycle over 1000 cycles at 3000 mA g(-1). The balanced high electrochemical performance for the hybrid electrode can be attributed to the synergetic effect among the CoS2 nanoparticles, N-doped carbon coating and in situ grown CNTs. The results demonstrate that the CoS2 can be well utilized with the N-doped carbon/carbon nanotubes hybrid material structure, which provides a facile approach to realize excellent performance for practical applications.

Abstract:Herein, we present a freestanding and flexible 3D nanocomposite made of polyhedral spherical FeCoS 2 and nitrogen-doped hollow carbon nanofibers (FeCoS 2 @N-HCNFs) that is synthesized through coaxial electrospinning, high-temperature calcination, and a facile solvothermal process. As a binder-free anode composite for potassium-ion batteries (PIBs), FeCoS 2 @N-HCNFs presents a high specific discharge capacity on the first lap (701.2 mAh g -1 at 100 mA g -1 ) and superior cycling stability (132.6 mAh g -1 at 3200 mA g -1 after 600 cycles). The impressive electrochemical performance can be ascribed to the unique 3D structure, such as the enormous specific surface area of the mesoporous structure beneficial for K + transfer; the three-dimensional hollow carbon nanofiber scaffold enhances structural stability; and polyhedral spherical FeCoS 2 improves overall specific capacity. According to the above description, the FeCoS 2 @N-HCNFs anode is a promising candidate for advanced potassium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Cobalt sulfides have attracted tremendous attention as promising anodes for sodium-ion batteries owing to their low cost, rich types and high theoretical specific capacity. However, the design and application of cobalt sulfides with long cycling stability and high capacity still remains a great challenge. Herein, CoS2/Co4S3@N-doped carbon (CoS2/Co4S3@NC) microspheres obtained via a simple solvothermal and subsequent annealing approach were investigated as an advanced anode material for sodium-ion batteries. It delivers excellent rate capability (650 mAh g(-1) at 0.3 A g(-1), and 217 mAh g(-1) at 6 A g(-1)) and ultralong-term cycling performance (256 mAh g(-1) after 1500 cycles at 4 A g(-)(1), and 239 mAh g(-1) after 3000 cycles at 6 A g(-)(1)). The extraordinary electrochemical performance of the present material as anode for SIBs was believed to arise from the unique structure advantages of the composite and the good combination as well as the synergistic effects among the components. In addition, FeFe(CN)(6)/CoS2/Co4S3 full cell was assembled and delivered a reversible capacity of 520 mAh g(-1) at 500 mA g(-1). This work may provide new directions for constructing promising high-performance SIBs electrodes for electrochemical energy storage.

Abstract:Transition metal sulfides (TMSs) have received numerous attention as anode materials for sodium-ion batteries because of the high theoretical capacity. So far, the Na-storage performance of TMSs is still unsatisfactory due to the structural degeneration that induced by the volume change upon redox process. Herein, a novel flexible and binder-free anode material of porous CoS1.097@carbon nanofibers was facilely constructed by means of the electrospinning, carbonization and sulfidation processes. The porous CoS1.097@carbon nanofibers display unique structure with CoS1.097 nanoparticles confined into porous N-doped carbon nanofibers, and can provide sufficient active sites, high electrical conductivity, reduced ion diffusion distance, abundant ion migration pathways, desirable voids for alleviating the volume variation, and rigid structural stability for efficient Na-storage. In consequence, the flexible and binder-free electrode material delivers high initial discharge capacity, enhanced rate capability and long-term cycling life. Besides, intrinsic diffusion and electrochemical storage behavior of Na+ ions were emphatically disclosed. This work paves a facile route for the synthesis of flexible and binder-free TMSs-based anode materials, promoting the practical application of wearable sodium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Metal sulfides (MSs) are regarded as one type of promising anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to their high theoretical capacity. However, the shuttle effect of sodium polysulfides still severely precludes their practical applications. Herein, the pomegranate-like N, S co-doped carbon (N,S-C) coated FeCoS 2 composites (FeCoS 2 @NS-C) have been manufactured. The ultrafine FeCoS 2 nanoparticles (∼10 nm) effectively shorten the electron transfer and Na + diffusion distance, thereby accelerating the Na + storage reaction kinetics. More importantly, the strong polar adsorption of N,S-C combined with the catalytic effect of Co 0 effectively inhibit the polysulfides shuttling, thus ensuring the cycling stability and long lifespan, even at large current densities. As a result, the as-prepared FeCoS 2 @NS-C exhibits an attractive rate performance (444.1 mAh g −1 at 10 A g −1 ) and a long-term cycling stability (461.0 mAh g −1 after 1000 cycles at 2 A g −1 ). Additionally, the assembled FeCoS 2 @NS-C//Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 full cell delivers a reversible capacity of 199.4 mAh g −1 at 0.3 A g −1 after 100 cycles, demonstrating that FeCoS 2 @NS-C is a promising anode material for SIBs.

Coaxial Electrospinning of CoS1.097@C Core–Shell Fibers Anode Material for High-Performance Sodium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:As an important component that affects the storage performance of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), novel anode materials still need to be well explored. Herein, CoS1.097@C core–shell fibers as anode material were designed via coaxial electrospinning, stabilization, and carbonization. Specially, CoS1.097 powders are distributed in the inner shell of carbon fibers, and sufficient pore spaces are present among themselves. The unique encapsulation structure, porous characteristics, and one-dimensional conductive carbon shell can enable the CoS1.097@C core–shell fibers' high initial specific capacity, excellent rate capability, and long cycle life. The initial charge and discharge capacities of the electrode at 50 mA g−1 are 386.0 and 830.9 mAh g−1, respectively. After 2000 cycles at 500 mA g−1, the discharge capacity is 216.3 mAh g−1. Even at 3000 mA g−1, the rate capacity can be maintained at 83.3 mAh g−1.

Abstract:CoS2 nanoparticles are effectively incorporated into N-doped hollow carbon nanotubes (CoS2@HC) through a combination of a straightforward oil bath method and a high-temperature sulfurization process. The CoS2@HC composite demonstrates exceptional electrochemical performance as an anode material in Li-ion batteries. The outstanding performance of this system can be attributed to the ingeniously designed hollow carbon nanotubes. These nanotubes not only possess high electrical conductivity, thus facilitating efficient electron transfer, but also provide ample space to accommodate volume changes. Furthermore, the ultrafine CoS2 nanoparticles embedded within the hollow carbon nanotubes offer a large surface area for effective electrolyte wetting and rapid ion diffusion during the cycling process. As a result, the CoS2@HC composite delivers a high capacity of 356.2 mAh·g−1 at 2000 mA·g−1 even after 1500 cycles, demonstrating remarkable cyclic stability.

Abstract:To achieve both high capacity and long cycling stability in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), the structural optimizations of anode materials should take into considerations of the reaction kinetics, the insertion/extraction processes of Na+, and the structural stability of anodes. In this study, the growth of CoS2 nanoparticles on N-doped graphite carbon three-dimensional nano-skeleton (CoS2/NGC) is designed to increase the active sites for sodium storage, to provide high ionic/electrical conductivity, and to alleviate the volume swelling and reduce Na+ diffusion energy barrier. As employed as anode materials of SIB, CoS2/NGC shows a great rate capability, affording an initial capacity of 660 mAh g−1, and maintaining a coulombic efficiency of 99.7% even after 1000 cycles at 1.0 A g−1. The cyclic voltammetry experiments demonstrate that the main contribution of the capacity is from the capacitive charge-storage. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the advantageous Na+ storage kinetics of the CoS2/NGC electrode is attributed to its low Na+ adsorption energy of −2.21 eV and low Na+ diffusion barrier of 0.113 eV. This systematic study paves a way for the efficient design of metal sulfides anodes for SIB, which is conducive to develop battery systems with remarkable electrochemical performance.

Abstract:Metal sulfides are promising anode materials for sodium-ion batteries due to their large specific capacities. The practical applications of metal sulfides in sodium-ion batteries, however, are still limited due to their large volume expansion, poor cycling stability, and sluggish electrode kinetics. In this work, a two-dimensional heterostructure of CoSx (CoS and Co9S8) quantum dots embedded N/S-doped carbon nanosheets (CoSx@NSC) is prepared by a sol-gel method. The CoSx quantum dots are in situ formed within ultrafine carbon nanosheets without further sulfidation, thus resulting in ultrafine CoSx particle size and embedded heterostructure. Meanwhile, enriched N and S codoping in the carbon nanosheets greatly enhances the electrical conductivity for the conductive matrix and creates more active sites for sodium storage. As a result, the hybrid CoSx@NSC electrode shows excellent rate capability (600 mAh g(-1) at 0.2 A g(-1) and 500 mAh g(-1) at 10 A g(-1)) and outstanding cycling stability (87% capacity retention after 200 cycles at 1 A g(-1)), making it promising as an anode material for high-performance sodium-ion batteries. A CoSx@NSC//Na0.44MnO2 full cell is demonstrated, and it can deliver a specific capacity of 414 mAh g(-1) (based on the mass of CoSx@NSC) at a current density of 0.2 A g(-1).
CoS/N-doped carbon core/shell nanocrystals as an anode material for potassium-ion storage

Abstract:Potassium-ion batteries (KIBs) are attracting tremendous attention due to the abundant potassium resources and their low price and high safety. However, the main problem faced by KIBs is the lack of high-capacity and high-stability materials for the intercalation/deintercalation of large-sized K ions. Graphite, alloying-dealloying materials, transition metal chalcogenides, etc. have been reported as KIBs anodes; however, neither the capacity nor the stability is satisfactory. In this work, CoS/N-doped carbon core/shell nanocrystals (CSNCs) were synthesized as a superior anode for boosting the performance in the aspects of capacity, rate performance, and cycling stability. This CSNCs feature with small-sized CoS of 20–30 nm as the core and N-doped amorphous carbon as the shell. The small-sized particles can buffer the volume change due to the reduction of stress in particle dimensions after the intercalation of alkali ions. The flexible carbon shell can overcome the agglomeration of small particles and meanwhile confine the active CoS particles in case of crack and pulverization after large volume expansion. As a consequence, the CSNCs exhibit a high capacity of 303 mAh g−1 at the current density of 0.2 A g−1 after 150 cycles.

Engineering and understanding SnS0.5Se0.5@N/S/Se triple-doped carbon nanofibers for enhanced sodium-ion batteries

Abstract:Tin-based chalcogenides have attracted tremendous attention as an anode material for sodium storage owing to their unique structure and high theoretical capacity. Unfortunately, the large volume change and poor conductivity lead to sluggish reaction kinetics and poor cycling performance. Herein, SnS0.5Se0.5 nanoparticles coupled with N/S/Se triple-doped carbon nanofibers (SnS0.5Se0.5@NSSe-C) are designed and synthesized through electrospinning and annealing process. Benefiting from the synergistic effects of SnS0.5Se0.5 and NSSe-C, the SnS0.5Se0.5@NSSe-C nanofibers exhibit a high reversible capacity and ultralong cycle life at higher current density for sodium-ion batteries. Furthermore, the sodium storage mechanism and electrochemical reaction kinetics of the SnS0.5Se0.5@NSSe-C composite are characterized by the in-situ measurements. The theoretical calculations further reveal the structural advantages of SnS0.5Se0.5@NSSe-C composite, which exhibits a high adsorption energy of Na+. This work can provide a novel idea for the synthesis of ternary tin-based chalcogenides and is beneficial for the investigation of their reaction kinetics.

Abstract:Sodium-ion battery is evolving into a desirable alternative technology to lithium-ion batteries, thanks to its wide material distribution and low cost. Tin-antimony oxide is gaining research interest as a sodium-ion battery anode material owing to its ideal theoretical specific capacity, environment friendly, and low cost. However, because of the inner nature of poor electrical conductivity of oxides and slow ionic diffusion kinetic, the electrochemical performance of tin-antimony oxides (SSO) differs significantly from the theoretical value of merit. In this paper, we demonstrated N-doping porous carbon fibers encapsulated Sn/Sb@Sb 2 SnO 5 composite (Sn/Sb@Sb 2 SnO 5 @PCFs-N) material. Through the use of a simple electrostatic spinning technique, the Sn and Sb nanocrystalline were in situ generated around the SSOs in a specific way, and the N-doping in the fabricated porous carbon fibers can modulate the charge transport in the fabricated composite. The unique structure can successfully increase the electrical conductivity and the specific capacity of the fabricated composite. Using as anode for Na + ions storage, the fabricated composite delivers high specific capacity and good cycling stability and rate capability, showing a high capacity of 450 mAhg −1 at 50 mAg −1 current density even after 100 cycles. The better rate capability can be sustained even when the current raised up to 500 mA g −1 . This current work can offer a perspective on the effect of phases modified and doping on the functionality of materials for the next-generation high-specific energy sodium-ion battery.

Herein, N-doped carbon encapsulated CoMoO4 (CoMoO4@NC) nanorods are developed as excellent anode materials for SIBs with long-cycle life. The N-doped carbon shells serve as buffer to accommodate severe volume changes during sodiation/desodiation, and at the same time improve electronic conductivity and activate surface sites of CoMoO4. The optimized composite presents rapid reaction kinetics and excellent cycle stability. Even at a high current density of 1 A g-1, it still shows long-cycle life and maintains specific capacity of 190 mAh g-1 after 3200 cycles. Furthermore, CoMoO4@NC anode is applied to match with Na3V2(PO4)3 cathode to assemble full-cells, in which it accomplishes reversible capacity of 152 mAh g-1 after 100 cycles, with capacity retention of 75% at a current density of 1 A g-1, highlighting the practical application for SIBs.

Abstract:Cobalt disulfide (CoS2) has attracted much attention as anodes of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to its high theoretical capacity. Nevertheless, the serious volume variation and polysulfide dissolution issues during cycling usually lead to poor electrochemical performance, greatly limiting its application. Here, by employing a CuCo-based metal organic framework (MOF) and bacterial cellulose (BC) as precursor and template, we have fabricated heterostructured CoS2/CuCo2S4 particles anchoring on an N-doped carbon framework (denoted as CuCo-S/NC) through ion adsorption and exchange reaction with a subsequent thermal annealing process. The generation of a CoS2/CuCo2S4 heterostructure which can boost the charge transfer rate in the hybrid composite has been investigated, while the introduction of an N-doped carbon framework derived from the BC could not only enhance the electrical conductivity but also improve the structural integrity by mitigating the mechanical stress and inhibiting the aggregation of active materials. Benefitting from the designed composition and structure, the optimal CuCo-S/NC electrode exhibits a high capacity of 889 mAh g−1 at 0.2 A g−1 and an outstanding rate capability of 394 mAh g−1 at 10 A g−1. The results achieved in this work indicate the great potential of this bimetallic MOF-derived template method for the rational design and fabrication of novel hybrid composite anodes for high-performance SIBs.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOF) derived carbon nanomaterials are arising as promising anode materials for sodium-ion batteries. However, the heteroatoms loss and aggregation during pyrolysis significantly hamper its further application. Herein, we utilized electrospinning structuring energetic MOF into nanofibers, followed by one-step sulfurization. The high content N doping (24.58 wt%) and CoS nanoparticles encapsulated carbon nanofibers with ultra-large interlayer distance (0.422 nm) were synthesized, which improved the diffusion properties and phase behavior of sodium ions. The resulting CoS/NSCNF (NSCNF for nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon nanofibers) delivered a superior rate performance of 358.5 mAh g−1 after 2250 cycles at 6 A g−1, serving as an anode for sodium-ion battery. The excellent storage performance ascribed to abundant N/S defects, enlarged carbon spacing, and the continuous one-dimensional structure of CoS/NSCNF, enhancing sodium ions storage ability contrasted with MOF-derived carbon. The density functional theory calculations further demonstrate that nitrogen-doping favors sodium ion adsorption ability of CoS/NSCNF, thereby improving storage performance.

Abstract:Transition metal selenides attract significant attention as advanced anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) in recent years due to their appropriate working potential and high theoretic capacity. However, the poor structural stability and rate capability limit their further practical applications. Herein, zeolite imidazole framework-8/zeolite imidazole framework-67 is used as a template to prepare Co0.85Se and ZnSe nanoparticles embed in N-doped carbon matrix successfully, and then coated a carbon layer (@C) by in-situ polymerization. One side, the N-doped carbon matrix with rich pore structure not only shorten the diffusion path of Na+ and improve the conductivity of the electrode, but also prevent structural collapse and agglomeration of active particles during the sodium insertion/extraction process. On the other side, the carbon shell preparation by coating can form a protective layer to buffer the volumetric stress generated in the electrochemical process and further improve the electrical conductivity. As a result, the as-prepared @C anode material exhibits an excellent electrochemical performance for SIBs. This investigation provides a promising approach to optimize the electrochemical performance of SIBs by incorporating active metal compounds into conductive carbons to form multidimensional structure.
