Abstract:This paper presented a new approach for ground improvement of deep marine clay in which the conventional booster tube in the current air booster vacuum preloading technology was replaced by a booster prefabricated vertical drain (PVD). In comparison to the ordinary PVD, the booster PVD could provide inflow channels for the compressed air when the booster pump was in operation. To examine the performance of this new air booster vacuum preloading technology, in situ field tests were conducted at Oufei sluice project in Wenzhou, China, where the thickness of the soft soil layers (i.e., marine clay) was more than 20 m. An extensive monitoring system was implemented to measure the vacuum pressure, pore-water pressure, settlement, and lateral displacement at this reclamation site. With the collected field monitoring data, a comprehensive data analysis was carried out to evaluate the extent of ground improvement. The study results depicted that this new air booster vacuum preloading technology was more effective for the ground improvement of the deep marine clay layers, in comparison to the conventional vacuum preloading technology.

Abstract:Model testing for soft soil foundations with and without a prefabricated vertical drain (PVD) was performed to assess the consolidation and long-term performance of PVDs. Surface settlements and excess pore-water pressures at different depths were monitored throughout the applied multistage loading. Classical methods with improved solutions that considered variations in the discharge capacity and non-Darcian flow were applied via a back-analysis of the consolidation results. Parameters related to the smear effect and well resistance were discussed in these solutions. It was found that the foundation improved with PVD had an approximately 20% increase in the total degree of consolidation compared with untreated soft soil foundations; the well resistance of the PVD system not only existed but it also changed over time; the average discharge capacity in the model test under multistage loading condition was far less than the reported value; and the advanced solutions, especially the solution that considered the varied discharge capacity (with q(w0) = 3 cm(3)/s and A(w) = 4.12 x 10(-6) 1/s), gained a better fitting result than the classical solution.

Abstract:The vacuum preloading method has been wisely chosen among many ground-improvement methods considering the time limit of many projects and the characteristics of reclaimed soil. However, the loss in vacuum with soil depth, the clogging around prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs), and the deteriorative consolidation of the deep soil layer, among other factors, create a large challenge to vacuum preloading for dredged marine clay fill. Thus, this study proposes a two-stage vacuum preloading method and focuses on its feasibility and effectiveness. Contrasting laboratory tests are performed in two identical experimental tanks with dredged marine clay fill from the Wenzhou land reclamation site in China. In one tank, the one-stage vacuum preloading method is used to serve as a baseline for this study. In the other tank, use of the two-stage vacuum preloading method is proposed for consolidation; it comprises two stages. In the first stage, the dredged marine clay fill is conditioned by vacuum preloading using half of the PVDs, where the dissipation of the excess pore water pressure tends to be steady. In the second stage, vacuum preloading is activated using all the PVDs. The results show that a better consolidation effect is achieved with the proposed method in terms of the settlement, vacuum pressure, pore water pressure, water content, vane shear strength, and soil particle microstructure after soil consolidation.

Abstract:This study carried out an investigation into the performance of PVDs embedded in dredged soil. A new type of integrated PVDs (NPVDs), in which the filter is adhered to the core by heat melting to form an integrated body, was tested. A variety of deformation patterns were designed for the NPVDs, including straight form, natural form, S-shaped bending deformation, zigzag kinking deformation, and Z-shaped folding deformation. Vacuum-preloading tests rather than the conventional discharge capacity test were carried out to examine the effectiveness of vacuum preloading. For comparison, tests on conventional PVDs (CPVDs) in natural form were also conducted under the same test conditions. It is found that the distribution of vacuum pressure along the drain length was as a bilinear relationship after taking into account the deformation of PVDs. The Z-shaped deformation of PVDs imposed significant detrimental effects on the effectiveness of vacuum preloading. Nevertheless, the effects of the S-shaped deformation of PVDs on the effectiveness of vacuum preloading were not prominent. The deformation of the natural-from NPVDs was close to the S-shaped form; while the deformation of the natural-from CPVDs was close to the Z-shaped form. Therefore, the NPVDs possess superior performance than the CPVDs in improving dredged soil.

Abstract:Two representative laboratory tests, using vacuum preloading alone and vacuum preloading combined with variable-spacing electro-osmosis (EO), were performed on dredged marine clay slurry used for tideland reclamation. This combined method consists of the following three stages: vacuum preloading alone, vacuum preloading in combination with large spacing EO, and vacuum preloading in combination with small spacing EO. This study focused on the feasibility and effectiveness of variable-spacing EO. The results showed that better consolidation was achieved using the combined method in terms of water content, dry density, degree of saturation, Atterberg limits, discharge of water, vane shear strength, current, and excess pore water pressure. Energy consumption for consolidation of the large spacing EO stage was less than for the small-spacing EO stage.

Abstract:The geotechnical tube technology has been widely used in the dewatering treatment of high-water-content slurries, such as engineering waste muds, mine water sludges, and dredging slurries. However, the existing engineering practice adopting the traditional geotextile tubes is characterized by low efficiency and difficult quality control. To address these issues, a new approach was developed by combining the geotextile tubes and vacuum preloading technology. In this method, several plastic drain boards were embedded in a geotextile tube as prefabricated horizontal drains (PHDs), and a vacuum was applied to promote drainage. The effectiveness of the proposed method was verified by a comparison test. A two-dimensional plane-strain analytical consolidation problem with a distributed drainage boundary was then formulated and solved to predict the consolidation process of soil in a vacuum preloaded geotextile tube. The analytical solution was validated against the results of a pilot field test, and then the influence of PHD spacing on the consolidation process was also discussed. Compared to the traditional geotextile tubes, the approach proposed in this paper promises good applicability and can effectively shorten the treatment time by 73.3% and reduce the water content of treated soils by 51.9%.

Abstract:An improved vacuum preloading method was developed to consolidate clay-slurry fill that is hydraulically placed in seawater for land reclamation. This method adopted both a vacuum and an air-pressurizing system. In the vacuum system, a new connector to connect each prefabricated vertical drain (PVD) directly to a horizontal vacuum pipe is used in lieu of a horizontal sand blanket. In the air-pressurizing system, compressed air is injected into the soil to accelerate consolidation. Field pilot tests using both the improved and the existing vacuum preloading systems were carried out at the same site. The testing data showed that better consolidation results were achieved using the improved vacuum preloading method.

Abstract:Laboratory tests were conducted on marine clay slurry to investigate the feasibility and effectiveness of a combined electroosmosis-vacuum preloading method in tideland reclamation. This method consists of two main systems: the vacuum preloading system and the electroosmosis technique. In the vacuum preloading system, integrated prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs) are connected to the vacuum pipes directly through a new airtight cap to minimize vacuum loss. In this combined method, the electroosmosis technique is applied towards only the final stage of vacuum preloading, where both the dissipation of excess pore water pressure and the development of settlement have become slow. The test results show that the overall effect of this treatment on marine clay was enhanced significantly when electroosmosis was applied at the final stage of vacuum preloading, and the energy consumption in electroosmosis was only approximately 8% of the energy consumption in vacuum preloading.

Abstract:The high-water-content sludge produced through dredging seriously restricts marine ecological environments. Vacuum preloading methods (involving prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs)) are widely used to dewater and consolidate sludge ground, but these methods require long treatment periods and have deprived reinforcement effects. To overcome the limitations of PVD vacuum preloading, a prefabricated radiant drain (PRD) vacuum preloading method is proposed is this study by adding a prefabricated horizontal drain (PHD) to the PVD framework. Physical model tests are conducted under PVD and PRD vacuum preloading conditions, and a large-strain three-dimensional finite element (FE) model is established and validated against the physical model test data. FE parametric analyses are also conducted to evaluate the key factors influencing the PRD, i.e., the PHD length and spacing. The results show that the reinforcement effect of PRD vacuum preloading is better than that of PVD vacuum preloading. The ground settlement effect increases as the PHD length increases and the PHD spacing decreases. The settlement and pore water pressure metrics show elliptical distributions with an increasing PHD length. Through this work, an applicable sludge ground treatment design procedure is suggested based on parametric analyses; these findings can provide a reference for designing sludge ground treatments in the future.

Abstract:Prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs) have been used extensively to accelerate the consolidation rate of dredged slurry. While some fine particles from dredged slurry can easily squeeze through the filter into the drainage channel, many cannot. As such, these soil particles deposit on the filter surface causing partial clogging of the drainage path. Although the pore size of filter is recognized as an important factor that influences PVD clogging, the standards for determining the pore size of the filter are lacking. To this end, the traditional gradient ratio tests with four different filter pore sizes were conducted, and the results show that the permeability of the filter at a given head increases with the increase in the pore size of the filter. To remove the effect of the difference between static hydraulic gradient and vacuum pressure, the vacuum preloading tests with varying pore sizes of filters were further conducted. Through these vacuum preloading tests, the degree of vacuum, settlement, pore-water pressure, water content, vane shear strength, and other parameters of PVDs with various filter pore sizes were obtained, and the optimal pore size of filter was determined.

Abstract:This paper presents a microscopic numerical study on membrane clogging of prefabricated vertical drain (PVD) installed in slurry when treated by vacuum preloading method. The motions of the slurry particles and the pore fluid are described using discrete element method and computational fluid dynamics method, respectively. The PVD membrane is simulated by the hexagonal packing of spherical particles fixed in space. The clogging processes of the PVD membrane are reproduced for different vacuum pressures. It is observed that a thin and dense soil layer (i.e. the filter layer) forming on top of membrane is responsible for the PVD clogging. A linear relationship between the logarithmic permeability and the void ratio is found for the filter layer, the slope of which agrees with published results based on experiment data.

Abstract:Negative vacuum pressure hardly reaches deep soils due to the drain board bending and serious blockage with the existing vacuum preloading methods (VPMs), thus resulting in poor reinforcement relative to practical engineering applications. To address this issue, this paper proposes a vacuum preloading method with pumping and discharging (a new dredger filling foundation processing technique based on vacuum preloading). This new VPM is developed through technological improvement and plastic drain board innovations in traditional VPMs. The new VPM uses a plastic vertical drainage board with double drainage channels, and the core board is in a “tic-tac-toe” shape with a hollow centre and square pipeline channels. It can execute air and water drainage. Vacuum transfer holes were set at two grooves, every 2-3 m from the central pipeline of the core board. Grooves at two sides of the core board and filter membrane were rolled together to improve drainage. In addition, the vacuum pipe, tube connector, and core board centre of the vertical plastic drainage board were connected directly and securely. A stereoscopic vacuum transmission system composed of a horizontal and vertical drainage system was built. In this vacuum transmission system, the transfer route was shortened, and the loss of vacuum along the route was decreased. The negative vacuum pressure was transferred to different soil depths through the central pipeline of the core board to accelerate the dissipation of pore pressure in soil mass and prevent vacuum pressure loss caused by drainage board bending, thus improving the reinforcement effect. Dredger filling silt foundation reinforcement by VPM and VPM with pumping and drainage were compared in laboratory simulations and field tests with different drainage boards. Test results show that the loss of vacuum pressure along the drainage path was relatively smaller in the new physical vapor deposition (PVD), and the pressure transfer efficiency was increased. Deep soil mass was reinforced effectively by using the new PVD. After reinforcement, the physical and mechanical properties of soil layers were improved. Moreover, soil strengths were remarkably improved, with sharp reductions in natural moisture content and porosity. Then, the transfer law of vacuum on different drainage boards and the reinforcement mechanism of VPM with pumping and drainage were analysed. Research conclusions show the superiority of VPM with pumping and drainage in terms of effectiveness and soft foundation reinforcement. This study provides a theoretical basis for the application and development of the new VPM.

Abstract:A novel ground improvement method that combines grid prefabricated horizontal drains (PHDs) with prefabricated vertical drain (PVDs) assisted by vacuum preloading is proposed for the beneficial reuse of dredged clayey slurry for reclamation purpose. To assess the feasibility of this innovative method, physical model tests are designed and conducted using high-water content Hong Kong marine deposits (HKMD) as the clayey slurry material. Furthermore, the impact of the spacing configuration of the grid PHD on the effectiveness of the proposed method is investigated through a series of model tests. A test without the installation of PVD was set, and in this case, two phases of vacuum preloading are applied sequentially through the PHD layer installed in stage. The other three tests involve three phases, with the addition of a vacuum preloading stage through PVD and variations in arrangement pattern of grid PHD layer. Results show that this proposed approach yields a final average undrained shear strength of soil of approximately 30 kPa, meanwhile reducing the average water content to around 50%. Furthermore, it is observed that decreasing the vertical spacing of grid PHDs results in growing final settlement. Reducing the horizontal spacing has less impact on the final settlement.

Abstract:The dredged slurry has high water content and very low strength. It is generally considered that there will be no smear effect when the PVD is inserted. However, the dense "soil column" will be formed rapidly around the PVD under the vacuum pressure, which will greatly reduce the drainage capacity and fail to consolidate, i.e. clogging. The clogging effect of vacuum preloading on the dredged slurry is studied through laboratory tests. Based on the drainage volume and rate with consolidation time in the test, the formation time and the range of clogging zone are determined by the spatial and temporal distribution of the water content and permeability coefficient of soils. A vacuum transfer mode considering the clogging effect and the time effect is proposed. At the same time, considering the nonlinear relationship between the compressibility and the permeability of soils, an analysis model for analyzing the consolidation considering the clogging effect is established and the corresponding analytical solutions are obtained. The validity of the analytical solution is verified by comparing with the existing data and field test results. The influence of vacuum transfer mode, lambda and c on the fmal settlement is analyzed by using the analytical solution in this work. The results show that the clogging effect obviously slows down the settlement rate and greatly reduces the final settlement of dredged slurry.

Abstract:Laboratory tests have been carried out for simulating dredged-slurry treatment combining air-booster and conventional vacuum preloading methods. Settlement plate, micro pore water pressure transducer and miniature vane shearing instrument are adopted for monitoring the settlement, the pore pressure dissipation and the soil strength during the test. The test results demonstrate that the air-booster vacuum-preloading method can significantly improve the soil strength, pore-water pressure dissipation and settlement. In particular, the real-time responses of pore-water pressure during the air-pressurizing process have been obtained that, in combination with the numerical simulations, help derive the reinforcement mechanism of the air-booster vacuum preloading method, which involves using micro cracks generated by splitting soil between the booster tube and PVD using the pressurised air. Those cracks improve the soil permeability, and have lasting effect even after air pressuring ceased.

Abstract:Abstract A system of vacuum preloading combined with partially penetrating prefabricated vertical drains (PP‐PVDs) is an effective solution for promoting the consolidation of the dredged marine clay. However, a significant and traditionally challenging‐to‐predict amount of deformation or settlement occurs. Therefore, it is necessary to introduce a three‐dimensional large‐strain consolidation model to consider the length of the vertical drain to determine the consolidation time and degree of consolidation (DoC), and associated settlement. The predictions using the proposed analytical model provide fair agreements with the field data and those in the literature. Parametric studies reveal that to achieve a 90% DoC within 100 days in soft soil, the optimal penetration depth for PP‐PVDs would be 0.7 times the depth of the soil layer. With the increase of DoC, the ratio of excess pore water pressure to applied vacuum pressure ( u / P ) in the whole soil layer moves toward 1.0. With the increase of PVD penetration ratio ( H 1 / H ), more DoC is required to dissipate the excess pore water pressure in the top improved soil layer.

Abstract:The traditional vacuum preloading method of prefabricated vertical drain (PVDs) has been widely used in practical engineering. However, the serious clogging effect around PVDs in the process of vacuum-preloading reinforcement can easily lead to a series of problems such as uneven settlement and large lateral displacement of soil after reinforcement, which seriously affects the application of PVDs in marine clay foundation treatment. In this paper, the effect of combined treatment of marine clay by geotextiles and PVDs on reducing the clogging effect around PVDs was studied by laboratory model experiment. The effects of geotextiles with different diameters and spacings on the surface settlement, excess pore water pressure and lateral displacement of the reinforced soil were analysed. The experimental results show that this method has obvious help on alleviating the above problems, thus providing a reference for the application of geotextile combined with vacuum preloading method to treat marine clay foundation in engineering practice.

Abstract:Stabilising soft marine clay and estuarine soils via vacuum preloading has become very popular in Australasia over the past decades because it is a cost-effective and time-efficient approach. In recent times, new land on areas outside but adjacent to existing port amenities, the Fisherman Islands at the Port of Brisbane (POB), was reclaimed to cater for an increase in trade activities. A vacuum preloading method combined with surcharge to stabilise the deep layers of soil was used to enhance the application of prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs). This paper describes the performance of this combined surcharge fill and vacuum system under the embankment and also compares it with a surcharge loading system to demonstrate the benefits of vacuum pressure over conventional fill. The performance of this embankment is also presented in terms of field monitoring data, and the relative performance of the vacuum together with non-vacuum systems is evaluated. An analytical solution to radial consolidation with time-dependent surcharge loading and vacuum pressure is also presented in order to predict the settlement and associated excess pore water pressure (EPWP) of deposits of thick soft clay.

Abstract:As dredged slurry has high water content and low shear strength, and mainly consists of fine-grained particles, clogging frequently occurs around prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs) during vacuum preloading, often leading to insufficient consolidation and poor geotechnical properties of soil. To address this issue, this paper proposes a method of multiple-flocculant treatment combined with vacuum preloading for improving dredged slurry. This is achieved by pre-treating the dredged slurry with lime and anionic polyacrylamide (APAM) prior to vacuum preloading. In this method, the additions of lime and APAM in a certain quantity allow small particles to form larger-sized mass, i.e. they flocculate, thereby increasing the void ratio and permeability. This results in the formation of a new natural soil that is easier to be consolidated by vacuum preloading. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, the optimum ratio of lime content to APAM content was preliminarily determined by performing a deposition experiment. A vacuum preloading test was carried out after the pre-treatment with lime and APAM. The experimental results show that with the help of APAM, the shear strength and consolidation efficiency further improve in comparison to the slurry treated with only lime. Finally, the optimum ratio of lime to APAM contents for vacuum preloading was determined as 2:0.1.

Abstract:The deformation characteristics of soil among prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs) subjected to vacuum pressure are investigated using a model test conducted on dredged slurry. Red iron particles are used to indirectly indicate the lateral displacement of soil under vacuum preloading. Test results showed that, in addition to the settlement of soil between two PVDs, there was also lateral displacement that varied with consolidation time and lateral distance from the PVD because of lateral vacuum suction. The lateral displacement arose successively with the increasing lateral distance. And it increased from zero on the PVD surface and dropped back to zero again at the midpoint between the two PVDs. There should have been a maximum value of the lateral displacement at a point near the PVD. The combined vertical and lateral displacement formed a soil pile around the PVD and showed a ‘V’ shaped soil surface.
