Abstract:On-chip single-photon sources are key components for integrated photonic quantum technologies. Semiconductor quantum dots can exhibit near-ideal single-photon emission, but this can be significantly degraded in on-chip geometries owing to nearby etched surfaces. A long-proposed solution to improve the indistinguishablility is to use the Purcell effect to reduce the radiative lifetime. However, until now only modest Purcell enhancements have been observed. Here we use pulsed resonant excitation to eliminate slow relaxation paths, revealing a highly Purcell-shortened radiative lifetime (22.7 ps) in a waveguide-coupled quantum dot–photonic crystal cavity system. This leads to near-lifetime-limited single-photon emission that retains high indistinguishablility (93.9%) on a timescale in which 20 photons may be emitted. Nearly background-free pulsed resonance fluorescence is achieved under π -pulse excitation, enabling demonstration of an on-chip, on-demand single-photon source with very high potential repetition rates.

Abstract:Using a novel two-pulse resonance fluorescence technique we demonstrate a Purcell factor of ~35 in a cavity quantum dot system. Highly coherent single photons are efficiently emitted into a waveguide, forming a near-ideal source for integrated quantum circuits.

Abstract:An optimal single-photon source should deterministically deliver one, and only one, photon at a time, with no trade-off between the source's efficiency and the photon indistinguishability. However, all reported solid-state sources of indistinguishable single photons had to rely on polarization filtering, which reduced the efficiency by 50%, fundamentally limiting the scaling of photonic quantum technologies. Here, we overcome this long-standing challenge by coherently driving quantum dots deterministically coupled to polarization-selective Purcell microcavities. We present two examples: narrowband, elliptical micropillars and broadband, elliptical Bragg gratings. A polarization-orthogonal excitation–collection scheme is designed to minimize the polarization filtering loss under resonant excitation. We demonstrate a polarized single-photon efficiency of 0.60 ± 0.02 (0.56 ± 0.02), a single-photon purity of 0.975 ± 0.005 (0.991 ± 0.003) and an indistinguishability of 0.975 ± 0.006 (0.951 ± 0.005) for the micropillar (Bragg grating) device. Our work provides promising solutions for truly optimal single-photon sources combining near-unity indistinguishability and near-unity system efficiency simultaneously.

Abstract:The key challenge to scalable optical quantum computing, boson sampling, and quantum metrology is sources of single photons with near-unity system efficiency and simultaneously near-perfect indistinguishability in all degrees of freedom (including spectral, temporal, spatial, and polarization). However, previous high-indistinguishability solid-state single-photon sources had to rely on polarization filtering that reduced the system efficiency by at least 50%. Here, we overcome this challenge by developing a new single-photon source based on a coherently driven quantum dot embedded in an elliptical micropillar. The asymmetric cavity lifts the polarization degeneracy into two orthogonal linearly polarized modes with a suitable energy separation. We design an excitation-collection scheme that allows the creation and collection of single photons with an indistinguishability of 0.976(1) and a degree of polarization of 91%. Our method provides a solution of combining near-unity system efficiency and indistinguishability compatible with background-free resonant excitation, and opens the way to truly optimal single-photon sources for scalable photonic quantum technologies.

Abstract:Single-photon sources based on semiconductor quantum dots offer distinct advantages for quantum information, including a scalable solid-state platform, ultrabrightness and interconnectivity with matter qubits. A key prerequisite for their use in optical quantum computing and solid-state networks is a high level of efficiency and indistinguishability. Pulsed resonance fluorescence has been anticipated as the optimum condition for the deterministic generation of high-quality photons with vanishing effects of dephasing. Here, we generate pulsed single photons on demand from a single, microcavity-embedded quantum dot under s -shell excitation with 3 ps laser pulses. The π pulse-excited resonance-fluorescence photons have less than 0.3% background contribution and a vanishing two-photon emission probability. Non-postselective Hong–Ou–Mandel interference between two successively emitted photons is observed with a visibility of 0.97(2), comparable to trapped atoms and ions. Two single photons are further used to implement a high-fidelity quantum controlled-NOT gate.

Abstract:We develop high-efficiency single- and entangled-photons sources that simultaneously combine high purity, efficiency, and indistinguishability. We develop elliptical microcavities to boost the polarized single-photon extraction efficiency over 50%. We coherently excite a quantum dot with a dichromatic pulsed laser to circumvent the 50% loss issue in resonance fluorescence due to the polarization-extinction configuration. We directly observe intensity squeezing of 0.59 dB in resonance fluorescence, and a corrected squeezing of 3.29 dB at the first lens. Quantum interference between quantum-dot single photons and sunlight is also demonstrated in our experiments. (C) 2020 The Author(s)

Abstract: In this chapter we will discuss the technology and experimental techniques to realize quantum dot (QD) single photon sources combining high outcoupling efficiencies and highest degrees of non-postselected photon indistinguishability. The system, which is based on ultra low density InAs QDs embedded in a quasi planar single sided microcavity with natural photonic traps is an ideal testbed to study quantum light emission from single QDs. We will discuss the influence of the excitation conditions on the purity of the single photon emission, and in particular on the degree of indistinguishability of the emitted photons. While high purity triggered emission of single photons is observed under all tested excitation conditions, single photon interference effects can be almost vanish in experiments relying on non-resonant pumping into the quantum dot wetting layer. In contrast, we can observe nearly perfect indistinguishability of single photons in resonance fluorescence excitation conditions, which underlines the superiority of this excitation scheme to create photon wave packets close to the Fourier limit. As a first step towards the realization of solid state quantum networks based on quantum dot single photon sources we test the overlap of photons emitted from remote QDs yielding non-postselected interference visibilities on the order of ~40% for quasi resonant excitation.

Abstract:Scalable photonic quantum technologies require on-demand single-photon sources with simultaneously high levels of purity, indistinguishability, and efficiency. These key features, however, have only been demonstrated separately in previous experiments. Here, by s-shell pulsed resonant excitation of a Purcell-enhanced quantum dot-micropillar system, we deterministically generate resonance fluorescence single photons which, at π pulse excitation, have an extraction efficiency of 66%, single-photon purity of 99.1%, and photon indistinguishability of 98.5%. Such a single-photon source for the first time combines the features of high efficiency and near-perfect levels of purity and indistinguishabilty, and thus opens the way to multiphoton experiments with semiconductor quantum dots.

Abstract:A high-fidelity source of identical single photons is essential for numerous quantum technologies such as quantum repeaters and optical quantum information processing. Hallmarks thereof are a near-unity single-photon purity, near-unity indistinguishability of consecutively emitted photons, and high brightness through a near-unity number of photons per time bin. In order to embed such sources in quantum networks, optical fiber integration is essential but complicated by cryogenic compatability and noise. Here we demonstrate a resonantly pumped, quantum dot (QD) based, transmission operated, single-mode fiber coupled single photon source with a purity of 97%, indistinguishability of 90%, and a brightness of 17%. This is achieved by deploying a unique micropillar cavity design in a closed-cycle cryostat, which is operated using a through-fiber cross-polarization technique to remove the pump laser light from the resonantly scattered single photons. These results pave the way for fully fiber integrated photonic quantum networks, as our technology is equally applicable for cavity-QED based photonic quantum gates.

Abstract:An outstanding goal in quantum optics and scalable photonic quantum technology is to develop a source that each time emits one and only one entangled photon pair with simultaneously high entanglement fidelity, extraction efficiency, and photon indistinguishability. By coherent two-photon excitation of a single InGaAs quantum dot coupled to a circular Bragg grating bull's-eye cavity with a broadband high Purcell factor of up to 11.3, we generate entangled photon pairs with a state fidelity of 0.90(1), pair generation rate of 0.59(1), pair extraction efficiency of 0.62(6), and photon indistinguishability of 0.90(1) simultaneously. Our work will open up many applications in high-efficiency multiphoton experiments and solid-state quantum repeaters.

Abstract:Spectrally-tunable quantum light sources are key elements for the realization of long-distance quantum communication. A deterministically fabricated single-photon source with a photon extraction efficiency of η =(20 ± 2) %, a maximum tuning range of Δ E = 2.5 meV and a minimum g (2) ( τ = 0) = 0.03 ± 0.02 is presented. The device consists of a single pre-selected quantum dot (QD) monolithically integrated into a microlens that is bonded onto a piezoelectric actuator via gold thermocompression bonding. Here, a thin gold layer simultaneously provides strain transfer and acts as a backside mirror for the QD-microlens to maximize the photon extraction efficiency. The QD-microlens structure is patterned via 3D in-situ electron-beam lithography (EBL), which allows us to pre-select and integrate suitable QDs based on their emission intensity and energy with a spectral accuracy of 1 meV for the final device. Together with strain fine-tuning, this enables the scalable realization of single-photon sources with identical emission energy. Moreover, we show that the emission energy of the source can be stabilized to µeV accuracy by closed-loop optical feedback. Thus, the combination of deterministic fabrication, spectral-tunability and high broadband photon-extraction efficiency makes the QD-microlens single-photon source an interesting building block for the realization of quantum communication networks.

Abstract:We describe the development and applications of a single-photon source based on a quantum dot embedded in a semiconductor nanowire, which can be precision-tuned to emit ∼1ns long photons at wavelengths that match the transitions of caesium D1 line. We discuss interfacing such single-photon source with atomic ensembles and present our experimental results demonstrating a new method of tuning the emission of the quantum dot by condensing inert gas (N2) on the nanowire. Next, we describe how these single photons at ∼895nm can be efficiently converted to wavelength suitable for satellite QKD links (∼794 nm) and optical fiber links (∼1469 nm) using a laser-cooled atomic ensemble that is loaded and confined inside a hollow-core optical fiber. Lastly, we inroduce our proposal of integrating the semiconductor nanowire with a lensed fiber to create a compact single-photon source with improved photon-collection efficiency compared to conventional setups.

Abstract:Single-photon sources based on semiconductor quantum dots have emerged as an excellent platform for high efficiency quantum light generation. However, scalability remains a challenge since quantum dots generally present inhomogeneous characteristics. Here we benchmark the performance of 15 deterministically fabricated single-photon sources. They display an average single-photon purity of 95.4% ± 1.5% with an average mean wavepacket overlap of 88.0% ± 3.1% corresponding to a single-photon indistinguishability of 92.2% ± 2.6% and high homogeneity in operation wavelength and temporal profile. Each source also has state-of-the-art brightness with an average first lens brightness value of 13.6% ± 4.4%. While the highest brightness is obtained with charged quantum dots, the highest quantum purity is obtained with neutral ones. We also introduce various techniques to identify the nature of the emitting state. Our study sets the groundwork for large-scale fabrication of identical sources.

Abstract:On‐demand single‐photon sources emitting pure and indistinguishable photons at the telecommunication wavelength are critical assets toward the deployment of fiber‐based quantum networks. Indeed, single photons may serve as flying qubits, allowing communication of quantum information over long distances. Self‐assembled InAs quantum dots embedded in GaAs constitute an excellent nearly deterministic source of high‐quality single photons, but the vast majority of sources operate in the 900–950 nm wavelength range, precluding their adoption in a quantum network. A quantum frequency conversion scheme is presented here for converting single photons from quantum dots to the telecommunication C band, around 1550 nm, achieving 40.8% end‐to‐end efficiency, while maintaining both high purity and a high degree of indistinguishability during conversion with measured values of g(2)(0)=2.4%$g^{(2)}(0)=2.4\%$ and V(corr)=94.8%$V^{mbox{(corr)}}=94.8\%$, respectively. Abstract:In recent decades, single-photon sources have emerged as key resources in the emerging field of quantum information, including quantum key distribution, quantum teleportation and optical quantum computing. To be practically useful for scalable quantum technologies, a single-photon source must simultaneously possess three qualities: high purity, photon indistinguishability and efficiency. We have developed a single-photon source that combines all three of these key features into a single device.

Abstract:Demands for single-photon sources are ubiquitous in quantum information processing as well as in quantum metrology. In many protocols for producing single photons, a cavity-emitter configuration is used. In such cavity quantum electrodynamical systems, the cavity can enforce a well-defined output mode for the photon and enhance its collection efficiency, while the emitter is indispensable for single photon emission. Here we show the two cavity-one two-level emitter configuration can be used to produce exclusively photon pairs, with each photon in a separate mode. Conditioning on detecting a photon in one of the modes, one heralds with high fidelity a single photon in the other mode. Counterintuitively, upon decreasing the coupling of the emitter to one of the modes, the heralding fidelity can further increase.

Abstract:Deterministic techniques enabling the implementation and engineering of bright and coherent solid-state quantum light sources are key for the reliable realization of a next generation of quantum devices. Such a technology, at best, should allow one to significantly scale up the number of implemented devices within a given processing time. In this work, we discuss a possible technology platform for such a scaling procedure, relying on the application of nanoscale quantum dot imaging to the pillar microcavity architecture, which promises to combine very high photon extraction efficiency and indistinguishability. We discuss the alignment technology in detail, and present the optical characterization of a selected device which features a strongly Purcell-enhanced emission output. This device, which yields an extraction efficiency of $\eta=(49\pm4)~\%$, facilitates the emission of photons with $(94\pm2.7)~\%$ indistinguishability.

Abstract:Single-photon sources play a key role in photonic quantum technologies. Semiconductor quantum dots can emit indistinguishable single photons under resonant excitation. However, the resonance fluorescence technique typically requires cross-polarization filtering, which causes a loss of the unpolarized quantum dot emission by 50%. To solve this problem, we demonstrate a method for generating indistinguishable single photons with optically controlled polarization by two laser pulses off-resonant with neutral exciton states. This scheme is realized by exciting the quantum dot to the biexciton state and subsequently driving the quantum dot to an exciton eigenstate. By combining with a magnetic field, we demonstrated the generation of photons with optically controlled polarization (the degree of polarization is 101(2)%), laser-neutral exciton detuning up to 0.81 meV, high single-photon purity (99.6(1)%), and indistinguishability (85(4)%). Laser pulses can be blocked using polarization and spectral filtering. Our work makes an important step toward indistinguishable single-photon sources with near-unity collection efficiency.

Abstract:A deterministic "on demand" source of single photons is a basic building block for linear quantum computation \cite{linear}, quantum cryptography \cite{crypto}, quantum teleportation \cite{teleport}, and quantum networks \cite{network}. In all these applications, quantum interference between two single-photon pulses on a symmetric beam splitter has been exploited \cite{review}, which imposes stringent requirement for the implemented single photons to be indistinguishable in all degrees of freedom, including their frequencies, spectral widths, pulse shapes, and polarizations. To generate single photons one requires a pumping mechanism to excite a "two-level emitter" and an efficient channeling of the subsequently emitted photons. The efficiency of the source can be enhanced by coupling the emitter to the waveguide \cite{manga} or a microcavity mode \cite{cklaw}. However, hitherto the solid-state single photon sources realized by using a quantum dot coupled with a microcavity rely on incoherent pumping of excitons, which leads to problems with timing jitter \cite{kiraz}, leading to a trade off between efficiency and indistinguishability. Here we introduce a means to realize a highly efficient solid state source of indistinguishable single photons using cavity-assisted adiabatic Raman passage in a single quantum dot - cavity system. We demonstrate pulse-triggered single photons with 100% efficiency and $>90$% indistinguishability using currently available experimental parameters.
