Abstract:The conventional description of Abraham Maslow's (1943 , 1954 ) hierarchy of needs is inaccurate as a description of Maslow's later thought. Maslow (1969a) amended his model, placing self-transcendence as a motivational step beyond self-actualization. Objections to this reinterpretation are considered. Possible reasons for the persistence of the conventional account are described. Recognizing self-transcendence as part of Maslow's hierarchy has important consequences for theory and research: (a) a more comprehensive understanding of worldviews regarding the meaning of life; (b) broader understanding of the motivational roots of altruism, social progress, and wisdom; (c) a deeper understanding of religious violence; (d) integration of the psychology of religion and spirituality into the mainstream of psychology; and (e) a more multiculturally integrated approach to psychological theory.

Abstract:This research describes the multilevel needs theory in Abraham Maslow's humanistic psychology. This research uses descriptive analytical method and is a literature review. Humanistic psychology is the third school in psychology after psychoanalysis as the first school and behaviorism as the second school. Unlike the previous second school, Abraham Maslow did not use people with neurotic symptoms and monkeys as objects of his observation. He made normal humans to observe personality which he later built into a theory of stratified needs. The stages in the hierarchy of needs theory are physiological needs, safety needs, belongingness needs, esteem needs and self-actualization needs. The result showed that humans have stages to reach the peak of existence which are interrelated with each other. If a stage has not been fulfilled, then he can not proceed to the next stage until the peak reaches the stage of self-actualization. This stage makes humans feel fully themselves while at the same time having fulfilled the basic needs in their lives.

Abstract:Building on Fircks (2023), who aims at integrating the theoretical and historical roots of mindfulness into psychology through a bridge between Taoism, relying on the polarity of life and wu wei (the principle of not-forcing) and Mead's Social Psychology, this commentary seeks to further explore how mindfulness, meditation and self-transcendence plays a role in the personal needs hierarchy of the human organism. This is done in the framework of Abraham Maslow's theory of human motivation and his hierarchy of needs, where a model that introduces a new layer in the hierarchy of needs, the need for self-transcendence, is presented. This model containing the new hierarchy of self-transcendence is based on Maslow's own notion of peak-experiences, as well as related to William James' notion of mystical experiences. Fircks' (2023) autoethnographic meditative experience is conceptualized as a peak-experience and analyzed to show how human beings strive to experience this state of being.

Abstract:This research explores the theme of self-actualization, and uses the characters of Imama Hashim, a Qadiani girl, and Salaar Sikander, a Muslim boy-genius from Pir-e-Kamil (The Perfect Mentor) by Umera Ahmad for analysis. It analyses how they foster the path to self-actualisation which is the fifth level of the Maslow’s needs pyramid where one seeks to become all they can be. Their journey is showcased when it comes to their findings and transformation, which include faith/trust, divine love, أَمْرُ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ and the role of Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) in Islam. Sourcing data from the texts, the study employs qualitative and analytical research to actualize the relevance of Maslow’s Self- Actualization Theory as it captures the achievement of character fulfillment within the lenses of psychological and Islamic perspective.

Abstract:More than 70 years ago, Maslow put forward an integrated theory of human motivation that still captures the public imagination. Still, integration with modern theory and research remains elusive. The current study aims to fill this gap in the psychological literature, linking Maslow’s theory to contemporary theory and research on personality and well-being. Toward this aim, the new 30-item “Characteristics of Self-Actualization Scale (CSAS)” was developed. Scale validation showed that 10 characteristics of self-actualizing people as proposed by Maslow load on a general factor of self-actualization and demonstrate external validity. Those reporting more characteristics of self-actualization were more motivated by growth, exploration, and love of humanity than the fulfillment of deficiencies in basic needs. The characteristics of self-actualization were also associated with greater well-being across a number of indicators of well-being, including greater life satisfaction, self-acceptance, positive relations, environmental mastery, personal growth, autonomy, purpose in life, and self-transcendent experiences. Self-actualization scores also predicted work-related outcomes and creativity across multiple domains of achievement. The results provide support for Maslow’s proposed characteristics of self-actualization and basic motivational framework, bringing the concept of self-actualization so frequently discussed by the founding humanistic psychologists firmly into the 21st century.

Abstract:Needs are all-pervasive. For Maslow, these were also innate. Being the basic drivers of behaviour, these have existed in an individual since time immemorial. This paper explores the application of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs at the individual level through case studies of four prominent historical figures. Through this analysis, it was found that the personalities could be arranged along a continuum of human functioning. The individual personalities displayed varying needs ranging from self-actualization to signs of metapathology. This dynamicity of human behaviour towards different and varying ends can be a potential source of newer insights furthering the cause of human development and evolution.

Abstract:Data from the first five years of the careers of a group of managers were employed to test Maslow's hierarchy of human needs in three ways. No strong evidence for either Maslow's hierarchy or a revised two-level hierarchy was observed. However, as other studies have found, as the managers advance, their need for safety decreases, and the needs for affiliation, achievement and esteem, and self-actualization increase. It was argued that these changes could be explained by a model of sequential career stages, which may be more the result of regularized status passages than of lower-order need gratification. Some methodological issues involved in testing the Maslow model were also explored.

Abstract:In the editorial, Revisiting Openness: A Must for Society (Mention, Ferreira & Torkkeli, 2016), the authors addresses the issue that despite predominance of openness in contemporary organizations – porous boundaries, virtual and agile teams, as well as interconnectedness, - Western Societies and some of their elected leaders are currently advocating closeness. They raised the questions: How we can build an inclusive society while rejecting difference? How can we achieve innovation when turning our backs on variety and diversity? And could the Maslow Hierarchy of Needs help the mechanics of these trends? Abstract:The purpose of this research is to investigate the current validity of Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory (HNT). Based on social role theory, Mannheim's theory of generations and income inequality approach and in the light of the purpose, this research is conducted with MMR (mixed-methods research) which has two sub-studies. In the first study, 240 randomly chosen people were asked to compare the satisfaction priority of needs pairwise. The data were examined according to different demographic groups that participated in the study. Results showed that Maslow's HNT depends on gender, age, and income level. The second study was conducted to deeply understand why this variety in the hierarchy occurs. Thus, we interviewed 12 people, chosen with purposive sampling, of different age, gender, and income level of the aforementioned sample. In the discussion part, the results of both sub-studies were interpreted.

Self-Transcendence and Life Stories of Humanistic Growth Among Late-Midlife Adults

Abstract:Objective: Self-transcendence is the experience of feeling connected to something greater than oneself. Previous studies have shown high scores on self-transcendence are associated with well-being and other psychological benefits, but have rarely examined the lived experiences of highly self-transcendent people. Method: Black and White men and women in late-midlife completed Life Story Interviews and self-report measures of self-transcendence. In Study 1 (N = 144, Mage = 56.4), we used grounded theory methodology to differentiate stories told by participants scoring either extremely high or extremely low on self-transcendence. In Study 2 (N = 125; Mage = 60.4), we created a quantitative coding scheme, and scored 1,375 new life story scenes. Results: In Study 1, six narrative themes were identified (closure, interconnectedness, lifelong learning, secure attachment, self-actualization, spiritual pluralism) as part of a “humanistic growth story.” In Study 2, four of the narrative themes were found to predict self-transcendence scores with significant effect sizes of β = .26 to .47. Conclusions: In our sample, highly self-transcendent individuals tended to narrate their lived experiences as spiritual journeys of humanistic growth. This study adds to our understanding of one path of personality growth in late midlife, that toward self-transcendence.

Abstract:Although the widespread implementation of hospice in the United States has led to tremendous advances in the care of the dying, there has been no widely accepted psychological theory to drive needs assessment and intervention design for the patient and family. The humanistic psychology of Abraham Maslow, especially his theory of motivation and the hierarchy of needs, has been widely applied in business and social science, but only sparsely discussed in the palliative care literature. In this article we review Maslow's original hierarchy, adapt it to hospice and palliative care, apply the adaptation to a case example, and then discuss its implications for patient care, education, and research. The five levels of the hierarchy of needs as adapted to palliative care are: (1) distressing symptoms, such as pain or dyspnea; (2) fears for physical safety, of dying or abandonment; (3) affection, love and acceptance in the face of devastating illness; (4) esteem, respect, and appreciation for the person; (5) selfactualization and transcendence. Maslow's modified hierarchy of palliative care needs could be utilized to provide a comprehensive approach for the assessment of patients' needs and the design of interventions to achieve goals that start with comfort and potentially extend to the experience of transcendence.

Abstract:Maslow's needs theory proposes a hierarchy of needs and argues for their sequential satisfaction. The theory has been very influential in development studies, in the establishment of development priorities, in the design of policies and social programs, and in the role economic growth plays as central development instrument. This paper relies on a large and representative database from Mexico to empirically test four assumptions which are commonly associated to Maslow's theory: that needs are satisfied sequentially, that income is a relevant resource in the satisfaction of relevant needs, that the hierarchy of needs is associated to their well-being contribution, and that Maslow's proposed sequential path in the satisfaction of needs -beginning with the satisfaction of physiological ones and ending with the satisfaction of self-actualization ones- is the best possible one. Data on satisfaction of needs is used to address the first two assumptions, while a subjective well-being approach is used to deal with the last two assumptions. The four assumptions are rejected. In consequence, it is possible to think about strategies in the satisfaction of needs that do not follow the sequential satisfaction proposed by Maslow and which question the hierarchical order he proposed. The paper highlights the relevance of the needs of love and belonging and of esteem, and it argues for an integrated view of human beings and of their needs, as well as for following a balanced strategy in their satisfaction. Implications for development studies and for the design of sustainable development strategies and social programs are discussed.

Abstract:A tool assessing position within Maslow's hierarchy of needs is presented. The Maslowian Assessment Survey (MAS) taps the safety, belonging, and esteem levels of the hierarchy with the following subscales for each of the three levels: (a) need gratification, (b) need importance, (c) need salience, (d) self-concept (i.e., how much one is like a prototypical person at each level). Correlational data, gathered in a series of four studies, supported the reliability and validity of these subscales. Combining the four samples (N = 612), the MAS exhibited a Cronbach's α (averaged across subscales) of .89. With a subsample of 88, the subscales exhibited an average 6-week test-retest correlation of .83. As to validity evidence, safety self-concept correlated positively with depression and neuroticism and negatively with self-esteem, dominance, and desirability. Belonging selfconcept was negatively related to self-esteem and autonomy, while being positively related to neuroticism, depression, social recognition, and affiliation. An esteem level self-concept was positively related to self-acceptance, autonomy, dominance, and (inconsistently across studies) desirability. Across all three levels of the hierarchy, degree of need gratification was found to be positively related to selfesteem and negatively related to neuroticism and depression.

Abstract:The uncritical acceptance of Maslow's need hierarchy theory despite the lack of empirical evidence is discussed and the need for a review of recent empirical evidence is emphasized. A review of ten factor-analytic and three ranking studies testing Maslow's theory showed only partial support for the concept of need hierarchy. A large number of cross-sectional studies showed no clear evidence for Maslow's deprivation/domination proposition except with regard to self-actualization. Longitudinal studies testing Maslow's gratification/activation proposition showed no support, and the limited support received from cross-sectional studies is questionable due to numerous measurement problems. The difficulties with testing the theory are discussed and the conceptual, methodological, and measurement problems of the studies reviewed are detailed. The implications of the findings and future directions for research are outlined.

Abstract:Self‐transcendence as a concept is increasingly found in leadership literature—yet in diverse ways. It is this diversity that serves as the motivation for the current article in which we develop a comprehensive and coherent conceptualization of self‐transcendence for leadership research. We demonstrate that self‐transcendence is the cognitive orientation of accepting something other than one's self to be of highest worth. We show that this something, which is greater than the self, may take four different forms: other people, social collectives, moral principles and ideals, or metaphysical beings. We contribute to leadership research by linking each greater something to one theory: servant, transformational, moral, and spiritual leadership. Our conceptualization of self‐transcendence allows us to integrate different leadership theories into a meta‐perspective of self‐transcendent leadership. We conclude with implications for leadership research as well as practice.

Abstract:In his original article on human motivation, Abraham Maslow said “ The present theory then must be considered to be a suggested program or framework for future research and must stand or fall, not so much on facts available or evidence presented, as upon researches yet to be done, researches suggested perhaps, by the questions raised in this paper” ([ 1], p370). This article endeavours to build on Maslow’s work, incorporating research in the neurobiological impact of childhood trauma which shows that safety is the most fundamental need for all human beings. Indigenous approaches to understanding human needs beyond the ending points of any one individual life and valuing cultural perpetuity are also integrated into this model. The methodology to synthesize this paper is the result of a transdisciplinary approach which values collaboration between disciplines that focus on the biological, social, and psychological factors that interact with each other in the dynamic dance of life. Communication is added as a core need of human beings, with Interdependent Actualization being seen as the capstone of human development. Incorporating the biological framework of the extra-cellular matrix with a visual model that shows the relationships between the parts of a whole, the Matrix of Needs restores the dynamic and interrelated nature of human needs in the same hope Maslow had, that this paper will generate ideas, launch discussions and build a framework for future researchers to better understand what it means to be human, and how to remove the barriers which impede our growth as individuals and as members of the human family.

Abstract:The use of Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs principle in organisations is discussed in this essay. Physiological requirements, comfort needs, the desire to be loved and respected, and the need for self-esteem are also part of the hypothesis. This is what becomes a model on how to act in an organisation such that the organization's success improves in fulfilling the goal and purpose that has been set out to serve others. The company will function at its best when the requirements for confidentiality, convenience, and certainty are met, allowing the process of meeting user knowledge needs to operate smoothly. That almost all, regardless of their degree of need, desires peace, oversight, and consistent employment opportunities.
