Abstract:Severe freshwater shortages and global pollution make selective removal of target ions from solutions of great significance for water purification and resource recovery. Capacitive deionization (CDI) removes charged ions and molecules from water by applying a low applied electric field across the electrodes and has received much attention due to its lower energy consumption and sustainability. Its application field has been expanding in the past few years. In this paper, we report an overview of the current status of selective ion removal in CDI. This paper also discusses the prospects of selective CDI, including desalination, water softening, heavy metal removal and recovery, nutrient removal, and other common ion removal techniques. The insights from this review will inform the implementation of CDI technology.

Abstract:With the increasing global water shortage issue, the development of water desalination and wastewater recycling technology is particularly urgent. Capacitive deionization (CDI), as an emerging approach for water desalination and ion separation, has received extensive attention due to its high ion selectivity, high water recovery, and low energy consumption. To promote the further application of CDI technology, it is necessary to understand the latest research progress and application prospects. Here, considering electric double layers (EDLs) and two typical models, we conduct an in-depth discussion on the ion adsorption mechanism of CDI technology. Furthermore, we provide a comprehensive overview of recent advances in CDI technology optimization research, including optimization of cell architecture, electrode material design, and operating mode exploration. In addition, we summarize the development of CDI in past decades in novel application fields other than seawater desalination, mainly including ionic pollutant removal, recovery of resource-based substances such as lithium and nutrients, and development of coupling systems between CDI and other technologies. We then highlight the most serious challenges faced in the process of large-scale application of CDI. In the conclusion and outlook section, we focus on summarizing the overall development prospects of CDI technology, and we discuss the points that require special attention in future development.

Abstract:Due to the growing demand for water in human society, the shortage of water resources has become the bottleneck of ecological civilization construction and social and economic sustainable development. Therefore, the circulation and development of water resources are important measures to ensure water resources and water security. Capacitive deionization technology (CDI) offers numerous advantages, including high efficiency, energy savings, ease of operation, and renewability. It has been actively developed as a promising new technology. Following decades of research, the application of CDI has become increasingly widespread. Most of the existing literature reviews, however, are only related to seawater desalination. Consequently, this paper mainly emphasizes the most current research progress in various application fields of CDI in water treatment. The focus of this paper is on the application principles and progress of CDI in water treatment. Introducing and analyzing potential research findings of CDI in water desalination, water softening, removal of heavy metals, purification of industrial wastewater, and removal of nutrients. The summary and comparison include CDI and other ion treatment technologies, such as Reverse Osmosis, Electrodialysis, and Membrane Distillation. Secondly, the latest research progress on CDI coupling technology is discussed. Finally, some suggestions on The presentation presents the progress of CDI technology and the prospects for the future.

Abstract:Water pollution and freshwater scarcity are two of the most important environmental problems faced by human around the globe in the 21st century. Capacitive deionization (CDI), as a promising electrochemical water treatment technology, has attracted large attention over the past decade for the facile removal of ions from water with the advantages of environmental friendliness, cost effectiveness, low energy consumption, and convenient electrode regeneration. Enormous progress has been made in the CDI research field and now CDI encompasses various cell architectures assembled with either capacitive electrodes or battery electrodes. These scientific advances are accompanied by a diverse application of CDI-based technologies. This work is intended to summarize the versatile applications of CDI and highlight the representative achievements in each of the applications primarily covering water desalination, water purification, water disinfection, resource recovery and synergistic combination with other technologies. Emerging application areas of CDI such as energy harvesting and CO2 capture are also presented. Lastly, the challenges and future outlook for CDI practical applications are discussed. This work should be of value in promoting CDI-based technologies to develop into a competitive option for coping with multiple water or energy-related issues.

Abstract:More than half of the global population is experiencing water scarcity. Capacitive deionization (CDI) reveals tremendous potential in water desalination to solve this global challenge. This review provides a comprehensive discussion on the recent progress of CDI in water desalination, with a focus on CDI ion storage mechanisms, design and optimization of electrode materials, and CDI cell architectures. Capacitive deionization (CDI) is an emerging water desalination technology for removing different ionic species from water, which is based on electric charge compensation by these charged species. CDI is becoming popular because it is more energy‐efficient and cost‐effective than other technologies, such as reverse osmosis and distillation, specifically in dealing with brackish water having low or moderate salt concentrations. Over the past decade, the CDI research field has witnessed significant advances in the used electrode materials, cell architectures, and associated mechanisms for desalination applications. This review article first discusses ion storage/removal mechanisms in carbon and Faradaic materials aided by advanced in situ analysis techniques and computations. It then summarizes research progress toward electrode materials in terms of structure, surface chemistry, and composition. More still, it discusses CDI cell architectures by highlighting their different cell design concepts. Finally, current challenges and future research directions are summarized to provide guidelines for future CDI research.

Abstract:Water resources are the basis for human survival and development. However, human beings face severe challenges of water pollution and freshwater shortage. With the critical advantages of low energy consumption, high efficiency, low cost, green and pollution-free, and renewable electrodes, capacitive deionization (CDI) has become an up-and-coming water treatment technology. After decades of development, the application of CDI has expanded from seawater desalination to many fields. However, the existing literature still needs a comprehensive overview of the multi-functional application of CDI technology in water treatment. Therefore, our work critically reviewed the latest research progress of CDI in water treatment to meet the technical requirements of various application fields. This paper first summarizes the various applications of CDI in water treatment, focusing on CDI's representative research results in heavy metal removal, organic contaminants removal, water softening, phosphate and nitrate removal, and water disinfection. In addition, we also discussed the latest research progress of energy recovery and energy consumption assessment for the CDI process. Finally, this paper discusses the challenges and future opportunities facing CDI technology.

Abstract:Membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) has attracted much attention to selective separation and recovery of various ionic species due to its simplicity, environmental friendliness, excellent removal efficiency, and low energy consumption. However, there have been very few review papers focusing on the challenges and opportunities in this field. Therefore, this review comprehensively summarizes the basic principles and significant development of MCDI processes. The potential applications of MCDI processes in selective separation and recovery of ionic species, e.g. , heavy metal removal, water softening, desalination, selective anion decontamination, and resource recovery, are highlighted and benchmarked using various performance indicators. In addition, challenges and novel countermeasures of MCDI processes are further summarized. Future research needs for MCDI processes to reach full-scale potential in practical water treatment are suggested accordingly. This review will provide a solid basis to guide the future development of MCDI-based water treatment technology.

Abstract:As a promising desalination technology, capacitive deionization (CDI) have shown practicality and cost-effectiveness in brackish water treatment. Developing more efficient electrode materials is the key to improving salt removal performance. This work reviewed current progress on electrode fabrication in application of CDI. Fundamental principal (e.g. EDL theory and adsorption isotherms) and process factors (e.g. pore distribution, potential, salt type and concentration) of CDI performance were presented first. It was then followed by in-depth discussion and comparison on properties and fabrication technique of different electrodes, including carbon aerogel, activated carbon, carbon nanotubes, graphene and ordered mesoporous carbon. Finally, polyaniline as conductive polymer and its potential application as CDI electrode-enhancing materials were also discussed.

Abstract:Capacitive deionization (CDI) is one of the most promising energy-efficient technologies for water desalination, however its industrial translation is slow and impeded by limited electrosorption capacity, slow electrosorption rate and poor cycling stability. Herein we address the above challenges by developing and validating a new concept of unimpeded and selective full-cell anion-cation separation using custom-designed anion-kinetics-selective anode and cation-energy-selective cathode. Nanoporous graphene anode enables the selective anion kinetics, while cation selectivity on the functionalized MXene cathode is due to the difference in ion adsorption energy. These mechanisms are validated by electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance measurements. The finely-tuned balance between ion transport and adsorption causes unimpeded ion diffusion, leading to the higher electrosorption rates. These effects are guided by the atomistic and quantum chemistry simulations, and also confirmed experimentally by tuning the pore size of graphene anode and the functionalization of MXene cathode. The fabricated asymmetric CDI cell exhibits superior electrosorption capacity of 49 mg g(-1) and high electrosorption rate of 2.92 mg g(-1) min(-1) in 5000 mg L-1 NaCl solution as well as excellent cycling stability (100 cycles), which are among the best of the current state-of-the-art CDI studies. These results demonstrate the design of advanced electrode materials for the effective control of ion kinetics and energies to achieve selective ion transport, thus providing new insights for a broader range of energy-related applications.

Abstract:Capacitive Deionization (CDI), a burgeoning desalination technology, effectively removes ionic species from aqueous solutions. One-dimensional (1D) electrospinning nanomaterial electrodes present unique opportunities for the enhancement of CDI performance, resulting in increased salt removal capacities and energy-efficient desalination for high-salinity streams. The review begins by elaborating on electrospinning principles, along with parameter considerations influencing said technology. We discuss post-electrospinning treatments such as carbonization, hydrothermal methods, and surface modifications, explicating their resultant impact on the structural, compositional, and morphological attributes of the nanocomposite fabrics synthesized through electrospinning. Progressing further, the analysis categorizes CDI cell architectures and introduces performance assessment metrics for CDI. Moreover, it presents an exploration of the multifarious applications of electrospinning nanomaterials in diverse industrial sectors. These applications incorporate the removal of heavy metals, resource recovery, and water disinfection processes. The potential benefits in these areas appear promising, signifying the requirement for further research toward optimizing the design of electrospinning nanomaterial electrodes to suit these specific purposes more effectively. Lastly, we delineate the existing challenges and potential research avenues, aiming to provide strategic guidance for future inquiries. The evolution of electrospinning nanomaterial electrode technologies could shed light on the emerging CDI research frontier and engender further environmental exploration.

Abstract:<p>Capacitive deionization (CDI) has attracted considerable interest as an energy-efficient and cost-effective approach for water desalination. The fundamental working principle of CDI relies on ion electrosorption on the surface of a pair of electrically charged electrodes. Therefore, the development of more efficient electrode materials with high salt adsorption capacity is at the heart of CDI technology, and has motivated considerable efforts over the past decade. In particular, various carbon materials, including conventional activated carbon and various forms of porous carbon and graphene, have been intensively investigated as the CDI electrode materials for their electrochemical stability and large surface area, which typically relies solely on ion absorption and the formation of Helmholtz electrical double layer. It has more recently been shown that significant improvements in salt adsorption capacity can be further achieved either by functionalization of carbon surface with redox-active groups, or by introducing electrochemically active transition metal oxides or conductive polymers into the carbon matrix. Herein, we briefly summarize the fundamental principle of CDI technology, and review the recent progress in the design and development of high performance CDI electrode materials. We will conclude with a brief perspective on the current challenges and future opportunities in CDI technology.</p>

Abstract:Capacitive deionization (CDI) is a promising and developing electrochemical technology utilized to desalinate salt water and produce fresh water. Multiple technologies, such as reverse osmosis , humidification-dehumidification, nanofiltration, and multi-stage flash, have been developed for water desalination and treatment. CDI significantly increases water desalination efficiency while maintaining an acceptable cost and energy consumption. Another essential advantage of the CDI is the removal of the dissolved ions in a selective manner. CDI system utilizes a pair of charged electrodes through which the feed water will pass forward; the charged ions in the feed water are extracted by applying an electrical voltage across the electrode pairs, and the charged ions tend to drift to the oppositely charged electrodes. This paper critically reviews the state of the art of CDI technology and its development since its invention in the mid-1960. Moreover, membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) and flow electrode capacitive deionization (FCDI) are two essential types of CDI technology, which are discussed in detail. The CDI electrodes' materials and composition, electrochemical properties, and characterization techniques are addressed. An analytical cost framework for CDI, MCDI, and FCDI according to the levelized cost of water is provided. In addition, recent advances in CDI, including hybrid CDI-desalination technologies and CDI's sustainability and environmental impact approach, are also discussed. Lastly, process optimization and the current market of CDI technology are highlighted.

Abstract:Capacitive deionization (CDI) technology is favored by researchers for its environmental friendliness and higher selectivity. Among a number of electrode materials, carbon-based nanomaterials are considered suitable materials for CDI electrodes due to their excellent chemical stability, better economic benefits, etc. However, the conductivity and hydrophilicity of pure carbon electrode materials are generally poor. Therefore, researchers have focused on carbon-based composites. This paper provides a comprehensive review of carbon‐carbon composite materials and various carbon-based materials composited with metal oxides, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), and polymers. In addition, the article summarizes the ion storage mechanism of CDI. Finally, the article provides an outlook on the future applications of CDI. It could provide good guidance for designing carbon-based materials for capacitive deionization.

Abstract:Efficient separation of specific ions from aqueous media is crucial for advanced water treatment and resource recovery. Flow electrode capacitive deionization (FCDI) offers potential for selective ion removal through continuous operation. This study evaluates the performance of selective cation separation using a commercial activated carbon slurry in a multi-ion solution of monovalent (Li + , Na + , K + ) and bivalent (Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ ) cations. We assess ion removal and cation selectivity under different operational parameters, such as applied potential, slurry flow rate, and feed water flow rate. Our data show that bivalent cations, namely Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ , are preferentially removal due to their higher charge-to-size ratio, aligning with hydrated ion sizes. The highest separation rate was observed for Ca 2+ (5.7 μg cm −2 min −1 ), and the lowest for Li + (0.2 μg cm −2 min −1 ). At the highest applied voltage (1.2 V), charge efficiencies reached 70 %, with an energy consumption of 41 Wh mol −1 for nearly complete cation removal. Optimal conditions were identified with a slurry flow rate of 6 mL min −1 , feed water flow rate of 2 mL min −1 , activated carbon content of 10 mass%, 1 mass% carbon black, and a cell voltage of 1.2 V. These findings highlight the importance of optimizing operational parameters to enhance ion removal.

Abstract:Capacitive deionization (CDI) is a novel and prospective technique mainly for desalination, featuring low-cost, easy maintenance, and environmental-friendly. As CDI develops by leaps and bounds, the electrode materials, the cell architectures, and the application fields have gained a lot of progress as reported. In order to optimize electrode materials, innovate cell architectures, broaden application fields, CDI adsorption mechanism exploration, as a necessary and important approach, have aroused enormous interest by researchers. This work provides a review of the strategies for investigating CDI adsorption mechanism form four aspects: experimental, mathematical model, computational chemistry, and machine learning, accompanied by discussing the prospects of these methods. Through a fine-grained summarization of the correlative reports from initial studies to the publications of late, it is expected that the meticulous statement of the characteristics, progress, and challenges of these exploration methods in this review can provide a fundamental support to facilitate prospective development of CDI.

Tuning Capacitive Deionization Mechanisms by Changing Electrodes’ Properties and Charging Profile in a Multiscale Simulation Study

Abstract:The rational design of capacitive deionization (CDI) processes necessitates unveiling the ion storage behavior. However, the interplay between porous structure and operational features on the ion dynamics makes it practically a challenging task. Herein a two-step approach is taken first to implement nano/mesoscale molecular dynamic and finite-element-based simulations encompassing pore structure, size, and wettability. Second, to design a CDI process based on the unveiled mechanisms. In the first step, the inter-features’ counter-balancing or synergistically boosting impacts is shown. The surface curvature renders ionophobicity to the pores in the absence of electric potential. In addition, the impacts of the surface properties and pore width are shown to be in synergy at narrower pores. Hence the narrower hydrophilic pores with surface curvatures excel in desalination by showing an ionophobicity before charging and ionophilicity during charging. The wettability of the wider pores fails to enhance desalination due to co-ion repulsion. A rarely reported ion dynamic, namely ion couple intake, mainly in ionophobic structures is uncovered. The proposed pulsed CDI process enhances the desalination of hydrophilic slit-pore by making co-ions’ repulsion sluggish. Besides, the mesoscale finite-element-based analysis shows that the deionization efficiency has a positive correlation with mesopore size while negative with grain size.
Size-based ion selectivity of micropore electric double layers in capacitive deionization electrodes

Abstract:Capacitive deionization (CDI) is a fast-emerging technology most commonly applied to brackish water desalination. In CDI, salt ions are removed from the feedwater and stored in electric double layers (EDLs) within micropores of electrically charged porous carbon electrodes. Recent experiments have demonstrated that CDI electrodes exhibit selective ion removal based on ion size, with the smaller ion being preferentially removed in the case of equal-valence ions. However, state-of-the-art CDI theory does not capture this observed selectivity, as it assumes volume-less point ions in the micropore EDLs. We here present a theory which includes multiple couterionic species, and relaxes the point ion assumption by incorporating ion volume exclusion interactions into a description of the micropore EDLs. The developed model is a coupled set of nonlinear algebraic equations which can be solved for micropore ion concentrations and electrode Donnan potential at cell equilibrium. We demonstrate that this model captures key features of the experimentally observed size-based ion selectivity of CDI electrodes.

Abstract:Over the past decade, capacitive deionization (CDI) has realized a surge in attention in the field of water desalination and can now be considered as an important technology class, along with reverse osmosis and electrodialysis. While many of the recently developed technologies no longer use a mechanism that follows the strict definition of the term "capacitive", these methods nevertheless share many common elements that encourage treating them with similar metrics and analyses. Specifically, they all involve electrically driven removal of ions from a feed stream, storage in an electrode (i.e., ion electrosorption) and release, in charge/discharge cycles. Grouping all these methods in the technology class of CDI makes it possible to treat evolving new technologies in standardized terms and compare them to other technologies in the same class.

Abstract:The desalination of saline water is of great importance in water-stressed areas. The energy efficiency and secondary contaminants of emerging desalination technologies need to be addressed. The heavy metal ions that exist in industrial wastewater may cause permanent damage to human health. Capacitive Deionization (CDI) is a promising desalination technology, attracting increasing interest. It stands out for its operational efficiency and minimal maintenance requirements. Compared to the traditional methods like reverse osmosis (RO), electrodialysis (ED), and ion exchange (IE), CDI offers a more energy-efficient and eco-friendly approach to water treatment. Among the existing electrode materials, activated carbon exhibits great potential with intriguing performance, such as low cost, high adsorption properties, and ease of integration with other materials. This paper reviews the science of CDI and reports the removal of seven contaminant ions in brackish water by modifying AC electrodes or coupling them with ion exchange membranes/coatings in CDI technology. In addition, this paper discusses the factors that may reduce the energy efficiency caused by electrode materials in seawater desalination, as well as modification strategies.
