Abstract:The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project consists of delivering two largest radio telescope arrays being built by the SKA Observatory (SKAO), which is an intergovernmental organization bringing together nations from around the world with China being one of the major member countries. The computing resources needed to process, distribute, curate and use the vast amount of data that will be generated by the SKA telescopes are too large for the SKAO to manage on its own. To address this challenge, the SKAO is working with the international community to create a shared, distributed data, computing and networking capability called the SKA Regional Centre Alliance. In this model, the SKAO will be supported by a global network of SKA Regional Centres (SRCs) distributed around the world in its member countries to build an end-to-end science data system that will provide astronomers with high-quality science products. SRCs undertake deep processing, scientific analysis, and long-term storage of the SKA data, as well as user support. China has been actively participating in and promoting the construction of SRCs. This paper introduces the international cooperation and ongoing prototyping of the global SRC network, the construction plan of the China SRC and describes in detail the China SRC prototype. The paper also presents examples of scientific applications of SKA precursor and pathfinder telescopes completed using resources from the China SRC prototype. Finally, the future prospects of the China SRC are presented.

China has been playing an important role, from various SKA concepts in the early years, to the current site selection as well as the technical development. The SKA has now entered the pre-construction phase, and many countries including China are involved into the key technology development, such as antenna prototyping and Phased Array Feed. With China’s continuous participation into the SKA, including the establishment of a science team aiming at limited scientific objectives, technical studies and designs of high-precision light antennas and broadband wide-field receivers, the Chinese Astronomy and related technologies will be greatly promoted. The SKA will provide a great opportunity for China to play an active role in international mega-science projects.

Abstract:Since 1993, astronomers and engineers from more than 100 institutions in 20 different countries including China, have engaged in the international mega-science project-the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), which will be the world's largest synthesis radio telescope. The SKA is currently in its pre-construction phase, and China has been playing a very active role. China has participated in 6 of the total of 10 SKA work packages, and carried out R&D in dish array, aperture array, wideband single pixel feeds, phased array feeds, signal and data transport, and science data processor. In the new SKA science book published in 2015, Chinese scholars have made their contributions in 20% of all the chapter proposals. After the SKA1 re-baselining, 20 Chinese astronomers participated in 11 out of the 13 SKA scientific working groups. The "2+1 Strategy" for China's SKA science priorities has been established, and some important progress has been made in cosmological re-ionization detection as well as in SKA data processing. In June 2015, the Chinese participation in SKA1 passed through the Chinese Academy of Sciences Panel Review. The Chinese Community is now deeply involved into the preparation of the SKA, with activities such as SKA science cases study, researching on high-precision light-weight antennas, developing the Chinese prototype array, as well as some efforts in building an SKA regional data center in China. This article gives a brief historical review of the SKA, overviews some international and domestic progress of the project during its preconstruction phase, and also discusses some future plans of the Chinese SKA.

Abstract:The upcoming Square Kilometre Array (SKA) radio telescope will become the largest astronomical observation facility, and is expected to introduce revolutionary changes in major fields of natural sciences. These revolutionary changes help us to answer the fundamental questions related to the origins of the universe, life, cosmic magnetic field, the nature of gravity, and to search for extraterrestrial civilizations. The unprecedented power of the SKA is characterized by an extremely high sensitivity, wide field of view, ultra-fast survey speed, and ultra-high time, space, frequency resolutions, which ensures that SKA will have a leading position in radio astronomy in future; this will be accompanied by a vast amount of observational data at exabyte (EB) level. The transportation, storage, reading, writing, computation, curation, and archiving of the SKA-level data and the release of SKA science products are posing serious challenges to the field of information communication technology (ICT). The China SKA science team will work together with the information, communication and computer industries to tackle the challenges associated with the SKA big data, which will not only promote major original scientific discoveries, but also apply the obtained technological achievements for stimulating the national economy.

Abstract:In 1993, a large radio telescope (LT, now referred as the SKA) was proposed by astronomers from 10 countries at the 24 th General Assembly of URSI. The SKA would be a telescope array with a total (effective) collecting area of about one square kilometer. There are various concepts, worldwide, for realizing the SKA project. Extensive efforts have been made, e.g., by project teams in The Netherlands (a wide-band phased array), Australia (an array of spherical Luneburg lenses), Canada (large adaptive reflector of very long focal length), China (an Arecibo-style dish), the United States (the Allen telescope array), India (an array of steerable parabolic dishes) etc., for details, see http://www.skatelescope.org. In this document we will summarize the Chinese concept for the SKA and modeling experiments for this concept. Chinese astronomers are going to build a set of large (Arecibo-style) spherical reflectors by making use of the extensively existing karst landforms (Nan et al., 1996), which are bowlshaped limestone sinkholes named after Karst, a Yugoslavian geologist. Now we refer to such efforts for the SKA as the Kilometer-square Area Radio Synthesis Telescope project, i.e., KARST (Peng & Nan, 1997). The Chinese SKA, KARST, consists of about 30 individual elements, each roughly 200 m in diameter. As a forerunner for the KARST or SKA, a Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST) is proposed to start construction as a National Megascience Project of China, with an estimated cost of ~60 M US$ around the year 2004. The FAST will be over twice as large as the Arecibo radio telescope coupled with much wider sky coverage (Peng, Nan & Su, 2000). Technically, the FAST is not simply a copy of the existing Arecibo telescope but has rather a number of innovations. Firstly, the proposed main spherical reflector, by conforming to a paraboloid of revolution in real time through actuated active control, enables the realization of both wide bandwidth and full polarization capability while using standard feed design. Secondly, a feed support system, which integrates optical, mechanical and electronic technologies, will effectively reduce the cost of the support structure and control system. Abstract:The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) will be the premier instrument to study radiation at centimetre and metre wavelengths from the cosmos, and in particular hydrogen, the most abundant element in the universe. The SKA will probe the dawn of galaxy formation as well as allow advances in many other areas of astronomy, such as fundamental physics, astrobiology and cosmology. Phase 1, which will be about 10% of the full SKA collecting area, will be built in Australia and South Africa. This paper describes the key science drivers of the SKA, provides an update on recent SKA Organisation activities and summarises the baseline design for Phase 1.

Abstract:The future of cm and m-wave astronomy lies with the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), a telescope under development by a consortium of 17 countries that will be 50 times more sensitive than any existing radio facility. Most of the key science for the SKA will be addressed through large-area imaging of the Universe at frequencies from a few hundred MHz to a few GHz. The Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP) is a technology demonstrator aimed in the mid-frequency range, and achieves instantaneous wide-area imaging through the development and deployment of phased-array feed systems on parabolic reflectors. The large field-of-view makes ASKAP an unprecedented synoptic telescope that will make substantial advances in SKA key science. ASKAP will be located at the Murchison Radio Observatory in inland Western Australia, one of the most radio-quiet locations on the Earth and one of two sites selected by the international community as a potential location for the SKA. In this paper, we outline an ambitious science program for ASKAP, examining key science such as understanding the evolution, formation and population of galaxies including our own, understanding the magnetic Universe, revealing the transient radio sky and searching for gravitational waves.

Abstract:The National Astronomical Observatories, Chinese Academy of Science (NAOC), has started building the largest antenna in the world. Known as FAST, the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope is a Chinese mega-science project funded by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC). FAST also represents part of Chinese contribution to the international efforts to build the square kilometer array (SKA). Upon its finishing around September of 2016, FAST will be the most sensitive single-dish radio telescope in the low frequency radio bands between 70 MHz and 3 GHz. The design specifications of FAST, its expected capabilities, and its main scientific aspirations were described in an overview paper by Nan et al. (2011). In this paper, we briefly review the design and the key science goals of FAST, speculate the likely limitations at the initial stages of FAST operation, and discuss the opportunities for astronomical discoveries in the so-called early science phase.

Abstract:The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) is a next-generation radio astronomy facility that will revolutionize our understanding of the Universe and the laws of fundamental physics. To achieve the intended objectives, it needs a stable reference frequency and accurate timing signals at each digitizer. These references are used for digitizing astronomical signals received from the receptors. The stability and accuracy of these references are highly important for coherently sampling the astronomical data. They are distributed using long-distance fibers that are susceptible to environmental perturbations, which makes meeting the requirements a challenge. The system overcomes these perturbations by actively stabilizing the noise during fiber transmission to achieve the required reference signal stability and sub-nanosecond level of timing accuracy. We collect together summary descriptions of the sub-systems designed for distributing the reference frequency and timing signals for each telescope, to provide an overview of the whole timing and frequency system for the SKA. Abstract:The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) will be the largest radio telescope ever built, aiming to provide collecting area larger than 1 km2. The SKA will have two independent instruments, SKA-LOW comprising of dipoles organized as aperture arrays in Australia and SKA-MID comprising of dishes in South Africa. Currently the phase-1 of SKA, referred to as SKA1, is in its late design stage and construction is expected to start in 2020. Both SKA1-LOW (frequency range of 50–350 MHz) and SKA1-MID Bands 1, 2, and 5 (frequency ranges of 350–1050, 950–1760, and 4600–15,300 MHz, respectively) are important for solar observations. In this paper we present SKA’s unique capabilities in terms of spatial, spectral, and temporal resolution, as well as sensitivity and show that they have the potential to provide major new insights in solar physics topics of capital importance including (i) the structure and evolution of the solar corona, (ii) coronal heating, (iii) solar flare dynamics including particle acceleration and transport, (iv) the dynamics and structure of coronal mass ejections, and (v) the solar aspects of space weather. Observations of the Sun jointly with the new generation of ground-based and space-borne instruments promise unprecedented discoveries.

Abstract:The SKA at mid and low frequencies will be constructed in two distinct phases, the first being a subset of the second. This document defines the main scientific goals and baseline technical concept for the SKA Phase 1 (SKA_1). The major science goals for SKA_1 will be to study the history and role of neutral Hydrogen in the Universe from the dark ages to the present-day, and to employ pulsars as probes of fundamental physics. The baseline technical concept of SKA_1 will include a sparse aperture array operating at frequencies up to 450 MHz, and an array of dishes, initially operating at frequencies up to 3 GHz but capable of 10 GHz in terms of antenna surface accuracy. An associated Advanced Instrumentation Program (AIP) allows further development of new technologies currently under investigation. Construction will take place in 2016-2019 at a total capital cost of 350M\texteuro, including an element for contingency. The cost estimates of the SKA_1 telescope are now the subject of a more detailed and thorough costing exercise led by the SKA Project Development Office (SPDO). The 350 M\texteuro total for SKA_1 is a cost-constrained cap; an additional contingency is to reduce the overall scope of the project. The design of the SKA_1 is expected to evolve as the major cost estimates are refined, in particular the infrastructure costs at the two sites. The SKA_1 facility will represent a major step forward in terms of sensitivity, survey speed, image fidelity, temporal resolution and field-of-view. It will open up new areas of discovery space and demonstrate the science and technology underpinning the SKA Phase 2 (SKA_2).

Abstract:The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) is the most ambitious radio telescope ever planned. With a collecting area of about a square kilometre, the SKA will be far superior in sensitivity and observing speed to all current radio facilities. The scientific capability promised by the SKA and its technological challenges provide an ideal base for interdisciplinary research, technology transfer, and collaboration between universities, research centres and industry. The SKA in the radio regime and the European Extreme Large Telescope (E-ELT) in the optical band are on the roadmap of the European Strategy Forum for Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) and have been recognised as the essential facilities for European research in astronomy. This "White Paper" outlines the German science and R&D interests in the SKA project and will provide the basis for future funding applications to secure German involvement in the Square Kilometre Array.

Abstract:The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) would be the world's largest radio telescope with eventually over a square kilometre of collecting area. However, there are enormous challenges in its data processing. The use of modern distributed computing techniques to solve the problem of massive data processing in the SKA is one of the most important challenges. In this study, basing on the Dask distribution computational framework, and taking the visibility function integral processing as an example, we adopt a multi-level parallelism method to implement distributed averaging over time and channel. Dask Array was used to implement super large matrix or arrays with supported parallelism. To maximize the usage of memory, we further exploit the data parallelism provided by Dask that intelligently distributes the computational load across a network of computer agents and has a built-in fault tolerance mechanism. The validity of the proposed pattern was also verified by using the Common Astronomy Software Application (CASA), wherein we analyze the smearing effects on images reconstructed from different resolution visibilities.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The Square Kilometre Array (SKA), as an eminent radio telescope of the next generation, will observe a huge number of objects with complex morphologies and sizes. An efficient method for locating and classifying radio sources becomes a requirement for scientific exploration. The SKA Science Data Challenge 1 (SDC1) is focused on the source detection, characterization, and classification for the SKA mid-frequency dish array of simulated continuum data. Three frequencies are covered (560, 1400, and 9200 MHz) to three depths (8, 100, and 1000 h). In this paper, we present an efficient deep learning framework, which is an entirely parallel, Python-based method for confronting the data challenge. The method can exceptionally achieve the source finding and categorizing simultaneously for both point and extended sources. In addition, the proposed denoising model can be a good noise estimator as a plugin for other similar applications. Compared with the published best, our score has improved by at least 22 per cent and up to 125 per cent in nine images of SDC1.

Science Pipelines for the Square Kilometre Array

Abstract:The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) will be both the largest radio telescope ever constructed and the largest Big Data project in the known Universe. The first phase of the project will generate on the order of 5 zettabytes of data per year. A critical task for the SKA will be its ability to process data for science, which will need to be conducted by science pipelines. Together with polarization data from the LOFAR Multifrequency Snapshot Sky Survey (MSSS), we have been developing a realistic SKA-like science pipeline that can handle the large data volumes generated by LOFAR at 150 MHz. The pipeline uses task-based parallelism to image, detect sources, and perform Faraday Tomography across the entire LOFAR sky. The project thereby provides a unique opportunity to contribute to the technological development of the SKA telescope, while simultaneously enabling cutting-edge scientific results. In this paper, we provide an update on current efforts to develop a science pipeline that can enable tight constraints on the magnetised large-scale structure of the Universe.

Abstract:Abstract The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) is a proposed next generation radio telescope. Between now and 2005 this project is in a technology development and prototyping phase, with construction likely to begin in ~ 2010. This paper describes what the SKA may be like, its key features, the motivation for building it and where you can access more details about it. Its is important to see any new facility in context, so other new facilities are also discussed. Avenues for future extensibility of the SKA other telescopes are covered, with some emphasis on multiple beam systems. Some suggestions for useful pulsar experiments and pulsar searches strategies are summarised. A conclusion is that the SKA may not be the most cost effective way to search for pulsars and that a 128 beam receiver system on an Arecibo like telescope working between 1 and 5 GHz may be a more cost effective approach.

Abstract:We present the results of our investigations into options for the computing platform for the imaging pipeline in the CHILES project, an ultra-deep HI pathfinder for the era of the Square Kilometre Array. CHILES pushes the current computing infrastructure to its limits and understanding how to deliver the images from this project is clarifying the Science Data Processing requirements for the SKA. We have tested three platforms: a moderately sized cluster, a massive High Performance Computing (HPC) system, and the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud computing platform. We have used well-established tools for data reduction and performance measurement to investigate the behaviour of these platforms for the complicated access patterns of real-life Radio Astronomy data reduction. All of these platforms have strengths and weaknesses and the system tools allow us to identify and evaluate them in a quantitative manner. With the insights from these tests we are able to complete the imaging pipeline processing on both the HPC platform and also on the cloud computing platform, which paves the way for meeting big data challenges in the era of SKA in the field of Radio Astronomy. We discuss the implications that all similar projects will have to consider, in both performance and costs, to make recommendations for the planning of Radio Astronomy imaging workflows.

The Field Trial of the Frequency Dissemination System for Square Kilometre Array Radio Telescope

Abstract:To satisfy the Square Kilometre Array's (SKA) frequency dissemination requirement, Tsinghua University designed a "1f-2f" frequency dissemination system. Compared to the former frequency dissemination system, it has better expandability which can support the star topology frequency dissemination network. In order to get the specifications as well as to find the potential problems of the frequency dissemination system for the SKA radio telescope, a field test was carried out at South Africa SKA site from 19/09/2015 to 27/09/2015. During these days, four tests were performed. From the field test results, we conclude that Tsinghua's Frequency Transfer System is capable for operated on the overhead fiber link, as well as long distance dissemination requirement.
