Abstract:Methane bio-oxidation plays an important role in the global methane balance and warming mitigation, while copper has a crucial function in methane bio-oxidation. On one side, copper is known to be a key factor in regulating the expression of the genes encoding the two forms of methane monooxygenases (MMOs) and is the essential metal element of the particulate methane monooxygenase (pMMO). On the other side, the content and fractionation of copper in the environment have great effects on the distribution of methanotrophs and their metabolic capability of methane and non-methane organic compounds, as well as on the copper-specific uptake systems in methanotrophs. Thus, it is meaningful to know the role of copper in methane bio-oxidation for comprehensive understanding of this process and is valuable for guiding the application of methanotrophs in greenhouse gas removal and pollution remediation. In this paper, the roles of copper in methane oxidation were reviewed, including the effect of copper on methanotrophic community structure and activity, the expression and activity of MMOs as well as the copper uptake systems in methanotrophs. The future studies of copper and methane oxidation were also discussed.

Abstract:Density functional theory investigations on CO2 hydrogenation to methanol mechanisms over Cu13 cluster loaded catalyst were performed. The results indicate that introducing TiO2 into Al2O3 promoted the residual electrons from Al2O3 surface directionally transmitted to the interface formed by the loaded Cu13 cluster and the support surface, thus created the electron-rich active interface. Incorporating single atom Ga promoter further gathered the residual electrons and stabilized the loaded Cu13 clusters. The electron-rich property of the active interface promoted the chemical adsorption and activation of both CO2 and the generated carbonyl species. Further favors the hydrogenating of carbonyl intermediates to methanol and effectively enhances the methanol selectivity. Moreover, CO2 priors to hydrogenated to methanol via reverse water gas shift pathway over Cu13/Ga-AT computational model with changed reaction rate controlling step with reduced activation energy. This work offers a simple approach for efficient copper-based methanol synthesis catalysts through control of interface electron structure.

Abstract:Despite its huge potential, the utilization of methane as a main feed-stock for the synthesis of fuel and value-added chemicals is limited. Earth abundant transition metal oxides (TMO) are promising catalysts for efficiently transforming methane to value-added products, but their activity is not satisfactory. The introduction of small water was reported to significantly change TMO's methane activation ability; however the role of water remains unclear. In this study, a combined theoretical and experimental approach is used to elucidate how the presence of water influences thermodynamics and kinetics of methane activation on CuO catalyst. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations show that water can be activated to form surface hydroxide species (OH*) on the CuO surface with a very low barrier of 5.6 kJ/mol. The presence of surface OH* opens a new reaction pathway for the C-H bond activation. DFT computed activation barriers for the first and second activations of methane in the presence of surface hydroxide species are 62 and 76 kJ/mol, significantly lower than the corresponding barriers of 82 and 154 kJ/mol on CuO under dry conditions. FTIR experiments of methane reaction on CuO at a temperature of 300 °C validate the theoretical prediction, showing that the moisturized reaction is faster and has less induction times, indicating adsorbed water is an initiator for methane activation. Besides, the stability of CuO catalyst is also enhanced in the presence of water which helps to prevent the consumption of lattice oxygen of CuO and avoid the reduction of CuO to the inactive Cu metallic state.

Abstract:The selective oxidation of methane to methanol is a dream reaction of direct methane functionalization, which remains a key challenge in catalysis and a hot topic of controversy. Herein, we report the water-involved methane-selective catalytic oxidation by dioxygen over copper zeolites. At 573 K, a state-of-the-art methanol space-time yield of 543 mmol/molCu/h with methanol selectivity of 91% is achieved with a Cu–CHA catalyst. Temperature-programmed surface reactions with isotope labeling suggest water as the apparent oxygen and hydrogen source of hydroxyl in methanol. Spectroscopic analyses reveal the fast redox cycle of Cu2+-Cu+-Cu2+ during methane-selective oxidation, which is closely related to the high catalytic activity of Cu–CHA. Density functional theory calculations suggest that both CuOH monomer and dimer in Cu–CHA can catalyze the selective oxidation of methane to methanol with Cu–OOH as the key reaction intermediate, and meanwhile, various copper sites may undergo interconversion under reaction conditions.

Abstract:Abstract Copper‐exchanged zeolites of different topologies possess high activity in the direct conversion of methane to methanol via the chemical looping approach. Despite a large number of studies, identification of the active sites, and especially their intrinsic kinetic characteristics remain incomplete and ambiguous. In the present work, we collate the kinetic behavior of different copper species with their spectroscopic identities and track the evolution of various copper motifs during the reaction. Using time‐resolved UV/Vis and in situ EPR, XAS, and FTIR spectroscopies, two types of copper monomers were identified, one of which is active in the reaction with methane, in addition to a copper dimeric species with the mono‐μ‐oxo structure. Kinetic measurements showed that the reaction rate of the copper monomers is somewhat slower than that of the dicopper mono‐μ‐oxo species, while the activation energy is two times lower.

Abstract:Selective oxidation of methane to methanol is one of the most difficult chemical processes to perform. A potential group of catalysts to achieve CH4 partial oxidation are Cu-exchanged zeolites mimicking the active structure of the enzyme methane monooxygenase. However, the details of this conversion, including the structure of the active site, are still under debate. In this contribution, periodic density functional theory (DFT) methods were employed to explore the molecular features of the selective oxidation of methane to methanol catalyzed by Cu-exchanged mordenite (Cu-MOR). We focused on two types of previously suggested active species, CuOCu and CuOOCu. Our calculations indicate that the formation of CuOCu is more feasible than that of CuOOCu. In addition, a much lower C–H dissociation barrier is located on the former active site, indicating that C–H bond activation is easily achieved with CuOCu. We calculated the energy barriers of all elementary steps for the entire process, including catalyst activation, CH4 activation, and CH3OH desorption. Our calculations are in agreement with experimental observations and present the first theoretical study examining the entire process of selective oxidation of methane to methanol.

Abstract:Cu-exchanged aluminosilicate zeolites have been intensively studied for the selective oxidation of methane to methanol via a chemical looping manner, while the nature of active Cu-oxo species for these catalysts is still under debate. This study inquired into the effects of Al distribution on methane oxidation over Cu-exchanged aluminosilicate zeolites, which provided an effective way to discern the activity difference between mononuclear and polynuclear Cu-oxo species. Specifically, conventional Na+/Co2+ ion-exchange methods were applied to quantify isolated Al and Al pair (i.e., Al−OH−(Si−O)1–3−Al−OH) sites for three mordenite (MOR) zeolites, and a correlation was established between the reactivity of the resultant Cu-MOR catalysts and the portions of the accessible framework Al sites. These results indicated that the Cu-oxo clusters derived from the Al pair sites were more reactive than the CuOH species grafted at the isolated Al sites, which is consistent with in situ ultraviolet-visible spectroscopic characterization and density functional theory calculations. Further theoretical analysis of the first C–H bond cleavage in methane on these Cu-oxo species unveiled that stabilization of the formed methyl group was the predominant factor in determining the reactivity of methane oxidation.

Abstract:Mononuclear and dinuclear copper species were synthesized at the nodes of an NU-1000 metal-organic framework (MOF) via cation exchange and subsequent oxidation at 200 °C in oxygen. Copper-exchanged MOFs are active for selectively converting methane to methanol at 150-200 °C. At 150 °C and 1 bar methane, approximately a third of the copper centers are involved in converting methane to methanol. Methanol productivity increased by 3-4-fold and selectivity increased from 70% to 90% by increasing the methane pressure from 1 to 40 bar. Density functional theory showed that reaction pathways on various copper sites are able to convert methane to methanol, the copper oxyl sites with much lower free energies of activation. Combining studies of the stoichiometric activity with characterization by in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory, we conclude that dehydrated dinuclear copper oxyl sites formed after activation at 200 °C are responsible for the activity.

Abstract:Copper-containing ZSM-5 zeolite can facilitate the direct oxidation of methane to form methanol under mild condition with high selectivity. However, due to the limitation of the experimental characterization, the identification of the catalytic sites in Cu-exchanged zeolites still remains unclear. Herein, the reactivity of different [CuxOy] (x = 1, 2, 3; y = 1, 2, 3)- and [CuOH](+)-ZSM-5 active sites towards methane partial oxidation process has been elucidated by using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. It is indicated that i) C-H activation over five different active sites obeys the radical mechanism, and the reactivity follows the sequence: copper-oxyl [CuO](+) (S = 1) > tricopper [Cu3O3](2+) (S = 3/2) > bis-(mu-oxo)-dicopper [Cu2O2](2+) (S = 1) > mono-(mu-oxo)-dicopper [CuOCu](2+) (S = 1) > mono-copper [CuOH](1)(+) (S = 1/2); ii) The rate constants for C-H bond cleavage of methane at the reaction temperature are faster at the higher temperature; iii) The descriptors for C-H activation of methane on [CuxOy] (x = 1(similar to)3, y = 1 3)- and [CuOH](+)-ZSM-5 have been established, for which the active site with more spin density and less negative charge will induce the lower activation barriers for C-H activation of methane. Meanwhile, the stronger hydrogen affinity of the active site is, the lower the activation barriers of methane C-H activation will be. Taken the stability and activation barrier together, the catalytic performance of copper-oxyl site has been enhanced by the presence of water.

Abstract:The stoichiometric conversion of methane to methanol by Cu-exchanged zeolites can be brought to highest yields by the presence of extraframework Al and high CH4 chemical potentials. Combining theory and experiments, the differences in chemical reactivity of monometallic Cu-oxo and bimetallic Cu-Al-oxo nanoclusters stabilized in zeolite mordenite (MOR) are investigated. Cu-L3 edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES), infrared (IR), and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopies, in combination with CH4 oxidation activity tests, support the presence of two types of active clusters in MOR and allow quantification of the relative proportions of each type in dependence of the Cu concentration. Ab initio molecular dynamics (MD) calculations and thermodynamic analyses indicate that the superior performance of materials enriched in Cu-Al-oxo clusters is related to the activity of two μ-oxo bridges in the cluster. Replacing H2O with ethanol in the product extraction step led to the formation of ethyl methyl ether, expanding this way the applicability of these materials for the activation and functionalization of CH4. We show that competition between different ion-exchanged metal-oxo structures during the synthesis of Cu-exchanged zeolites determines the formation of active species, and this provides guidelines for the synthesis of highly active materials for CH4 activation and functionalization.

Abstract:Methanol synthesis from CO2 hydrogenation on supported Cu catalysts is of considerable importance in the chemical and energy industries. Although extensive experimental and theoretical efforts have been carried out in the past decades, the most fundamental questions such as the reaction mechanisms and the key reaction intermediates are still in debate. In the present work, a comprehensive reaction network for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol on Cu(1 1 1) is studied using periodic density functional theory calculations. All of the elementary reaction steps in the reaction network are identified in an unbiased way with the dimer method. Our calculation results show that methanol synthesis from direct hydrogenation of formate on Cu(1 1 1) is not feasible due to the high activation barriers for some of the elementary steps. Instead, we find that CO2 hydrogenation to hydrocarboxyl (trans-COOH) is kinetically more favorable than formate in the presence of H2O via a unique hydrogen transfer mechanism. The trans-COOH is then converted into hydroxymethylidyne (COH) via dihydroxycarbene (COHOH) intermediates, followed by three consecutive hydrogenation steps to form hydroxymethylene (HCOH), hydroxymethyl (H2COH), and methanol. This is consistent with recent experimental observations [1] which indicate that direct hydrogenation of formate will not produce methanol under dry hydrogen conditions. Thus, both experiment and computational modeling clearly demonstrate the important role of trace amounts of water in methanol synthesis from CO2 hydrogenation on Cu catalysts. The proposed methanol synthesis route on Cu(1 1 1) not only provides new insights into methanol synthesis chemistry, but also demonstrates again that spectroscopically observed surface species are often not critical reaction intermediates but rather spectator species. Abstract:To make methane a suitable energy carrier and transport less costly, it is an urgent and challenging task for us to convert methane to liquid under mild conditions efficiently. In this study, we explored partial methane oxidation to methanol by density functional theory (DFT) calculations using a hybrid functional (HSE06) with van der Waals (vdW) interactions. The stabilities of different active sites over SSZ-13 and SAPO-34, two CHA type zeolites, are thoroughly investigated by ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations and ab initio thermodynamics analyses. Four possible active sites, namely [CuOHCu]2+, [Cu(OH)2Cu]2+, [CuOCu]2+ and [CuOH]+, are identified stable. Methane-to-methanol reaction mechanisms are further studied upon these most stable active sites, among which [CuOCu]2+ and [CuOH]+ are proved to be reactive. The migration of species among zeolite pores are also discussed, which accounts for the activity on [CuOH]+ sites. This concept may represent a more complete picture of catalytic reactions over zeolites in general.

Abstract:Abstract Cu/SSZ‐13 catalysts with different Cu loadings (1–5 wt.%) were prepared by conventional impregnation via a slow step‐dry process for the direct conversion of methane to methanol. Catalytic performance of the catalysts is found to depend on the Cu loading in both stepwise and continuous processes and 2 wt.% Cu presents the best performance. CuO nanoparticles, Cu x O y clusters and monomeric [CuOH] + species are found on Cu/SSZ‐13 based on HRTEM, HAADF‐STEM, DR UV‐vis and FTIR spectroscopies. The high coverage of CuO nanoparticles on 5 wt.% Cu/SSZ‐13 results in the loss of catalytic reactivity in spite of the existence of active Cu x O y and [CuOH] + sites. Besides, it is proposed that the formation of [Cu 2 O 2 ] 2+ and [Cu 2 O] 2+ active sites involves [CuOH] + intermediates. We further found that improved catalytic performance in cyclic stepwise process involves the re‐dispersion of CuO nanoparticles and/or large clusters as well as the re‐oxidation of Cu(I) cations from self‐reduction of [CuOH] + species.

Abstract:The direct catalytic conversion of methane to liquid oxygenated compounds, such as methanol or dimethyl ether, at low temperature using molecular oxygen is a grand challenge in C-H activation that has never been met with synthetic, heterogeneous catalysts. We report the first demonstration of direct, catalytic oxidation of methane into methanol with molecular oxygen over copper-exchanged zeolites at low reaction temperatures (483-498 K). Reaction kinetics studies show sustained catalytic activity and high selectivity for a variety of commercially available zeolite topologies under mild conditions (e.g., 483 K and atmospheric pressure). Transient and steady state measurements with isotopically labeled molecules confirm catalytic turnover. The catalytic rates and apparent activation energies are affected by the zeolite topology, with caged-based zeolites (e.g., Cu-SSZ-13) showing the highest rates. Although the reaction rates are low, the discovery of catalytic sites in copper-exchanged zeolites will accelerate the development of strategies to directly oxidize methane into methanol under mild conditions.

Abstract:Environmental H2O 2 O has a significant effect on the reaction mechanism and process of VOC oxidation, of which the intrinsic mechanism is hardly reported. Herein, a series of PtCu delta-MnOx delta-MnO x catalysts with different strong metal- supported interactions were constructed by replacing some Pt species with Cu species. Among them, the PtCu3- 3- MnOx x catalyst exhibited superior catalytic performance (T90 90 = 170 degree celsius), high water resistance, and long-term stability. Furthermore, in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (in in-situ DRIFTs) showed that the acetone oxidation followed synergistic cooperation of the Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) and Mars van Krevelen (MvK) mechanism. Acetone oxidation over PtCu3-MnOx 3-MnO x occurred via the L-H mechanism producing surface acetate and formate species intermediate. Above 100 degrees C, adsorbed acetone (i.e., acetate and formate species) reacts with MnOx x lattice oxygen according to the MvK mechanism to form CO2 2 and H2O. 2 O. When water vapor was present, the L-H mechanism was impaired, inhibiting the deep oxidation of acetone. This research provides an in-depth exploration of how water vapor impacts the reaction mechanism of acetone oxidation. It offers valuable insights for creating dependable catalysts suitable for use in various industrial settings.

Abstract:The hydrogenation of carbon dioxide (CO2) is one of important processes to effectively convert and utilize CO2, which is also regarded as the key step at the industrial methanol synthesis. Water is likely to play an important role in this process, but it still remains elusive. To systematically understand its influence, here we computationally compare the reaction mechanisms of CO2 hydrogenation over the stepped Cu(211) surface between in the absence and presence of water based on microkinetic simulations upon density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The effects of water on each hydrogenation step and the whole activity and selectivity are checked and its physical origin is discussed. It is found that the water could kinetically accelerate the hydrogenation on CO2 to COOH, promoting the reverse water gas shift reaction to produce carbon monoxide (CO). It hardly influences the CO2 hydrogenation to methanol kinetically. In addition, the too high initial partial pressure of water will thermodynamically inhibit the CO2 conversion.

Abstract:AbstractThe hydrogenation of CO2by renewable power‐generated hydrogen offers a promising approach to a sustainable carbon cycle. However, the role of water during CO2hydrogenation is still under debate. Herein, we demonstrated that either too low or too high contents of water hampered the methanol synthesis over Cu/ZnO based catalysts. For Cu single atoms on ZnO supports, the optimal content of water was 0.11 vol. % under 30 bar (CO2 : H2=1 : 3) at 170 °C. Upon the introduction of optimal‐content water, the methanol selectivity immediately became 99.1 %, meanwhile the conversion of CO2underwent a volcano‐type trend with the maximum of 4.9 %. According to mechanistic studies, water acted as a bridge between H atoms and CO2/intermediates, facilitating the transformation of COOH* and CH2O*. The enhanced activity induced the generation of more water to react with CO via water‐gas shift reaction, resulting in the increase in methanol selectivity.
Active Sites and Structure–Activity Relationships of Copper-Based Catalysts for Carbon Dioxide Hydrogenation to Methanol

Abstract:Active sites and structure–activity relationships for methanol synthesis from a stoichiometric mixture of CO2 and H2 were investigated for a series of coprecipitated Cu-based catalysts with temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and N2O decomposition. Experiments in a reaction chamber attached to an XPS instrument show that metallic Cu exists on the surface of both reduced and spent catalysts and there is no evidence of monovalent Cu+ species. This finding provides reassurance regarding the active oxidation state of Cu in methanol synthesis catalysts because it is observed with 6 compositions possessing different metal oxide additives, Cu particle sizes, and varying degrees of ZnO crystallinity. Smaller Cu particles demonstrate larger turnover frequencies (TOF) for methanol formation, confirming the structure sensitivity of this reaction. No correlation between TOF and lattice strain in Cu crystallites is observed suggesting this structural parameter is not responsible for the activity. Moreover, changes in the observed rates may be ascribed to relative distribution of different Cu facets as more open and low-index surfaces are present on the catalysts containing small Cu particles and amorphous or well-dispersed ZnO. In general, the activity of these systems results from large Cu surface area, high Cu dispersion, and synergistic interactions between Cu and metal oxide support components, illustrating that these are key parameters for developing fundamental mechanistic insight into the performance of Cu-based methanol synthesis catalysts.

Abstract:Direct methane conversion to methanol via chemical looping using copper-exchanged zeolites has attracted considerable attention during the last decades and is one of the most-actively studied processes. Despite the significant progress that has been made in the design of active systems and the elucidation of active sites, the effects of zeolite topology and the structure of copper species on the nature of the reaction products are yet unclear. Herein, we show that oxygen-activated copper-exchanged zeolites of different framework types, namely, MOR, MFI, BEA, and FAU, yield different products, as detected by in situ Fourier-transform infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Molecular methanol, methoxy species, and dimethyl ether prevail at lower reaction temperatures (<473–523 K), and CuI carbonyls and gaseous carbon oxides were detected above 573 K. Methane coupling to C2 and C3 hydrocarbons was shown for the first time over CuMOR, CuBEA, and CuFAU. The nature and relative fraction of formed products strongly depend on the structure of the copper active sites, which is governed by the topology of the zeolite host.
