Abstract:C ITIES and urban regions are becoming smarter thanks to the recent developments of digital technologies, smart control, data analytics, and optimization concepts. A smart city is equipped with different electronic elements employed by several applications. The utilization of the aforementioned technologies and approaches can furnish intelligent management of energy distribution and consumption in heterogeneous circumstances. Intelligent nodes have some abilities, such as sensing and networking, which raise the possibility of optimal scheduling of energy suppliers. Digitalization can result in the generation of some services that have an interaction with the environment. Hence, it could introduce some opportunities for contextualization and geoawareness. Furthermore, collective intelligence will improve the processes of decision making and empower the citizens. One of the main features of a smart city is due to its ability of favoring customers’ responsiveness and efficiency decisions. A broad range of challenging problems and issues related to the area of smart energy cities and regions is, therefore, being addressed within this Special Section on “Methods and Systems for a Smart Energy City” of the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON INDUSTRIAL ELECTRONICS. Recent research and technology development trends, methods, and corresponding results are being covered by the included contributions of this Special Section, which is technically supported by the Technical Committee on Smart Grids (TC-SG) of the IEEE INDUSTRIAL ELECTRONICS SOCIETY. In a strict peer-review process supported by highly reputed international experts from the domain, finally, 27 excellent contributions out of around 60 submissions have been selected for publication in this Special Section. They address a wide range of challenging and interesting topics in the domain of smart energy cities, which can be mainly grouped into six clusters related to the following: 1) energy management and optimization problems; 2) demand response approaches; 3) energy market concepts; 4) microgrid control; 5) energy storage systems applications; 6) metering and sensor technology. Table I provides a brief overview of the assignment of the papers to the aforementioned clusters. In the following, the main content and contributions of these papers are briefly summarized in order to give the readers guidance through the content of this Special Issue. Abstract:Power system operation is of vital importance and must be developed far beyond today's practice to meet future needs. Almost all European countries are facing an abrupt and very important increase of renewables with intrinsically varying yields which are difficult to predict. In addition, an increase of new types of electric loads and a reduction of traditional production from bulk generation can be observed as well. Hence, the level of complexity of system operation steadily increases. Because of these developments, the traditional power system is being transformed into a smart grid. Previous and ongoing research has tended to focus on how specific aspects of smart grids can be developed and validated, but until now there exists no integrated approach for analysing and evaluating complex smart grid configurations. To tackle these research and development needs, a pan-European research infrastructure is realized in the ERIGrid project that supports the technology development as well as the roll out of smart grid technologies and solutions. This paper provides an overview of the main results of ERIGrid which have been achieved during the last four years. Also, experiences and lessons learned are discussed and an outlook to future research needs is provided.

Abstract:The second IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS) Students Symposium on Power Electronics (SSPEL)—Asia 2024 was successfully held in Hangzhou, China, from 13 to 14 January 2024 with both in-person and virtual attendees. The event was organized through the joint efforts of the IEEE PELS Membership Committee—China (MCC), PELS Zhejiang/Jiangsu/Anhui Chapter, and PELS Zhejiang University Student Branch Chapter (SBC), with technical co-sponsorship of the China Power Supply Society (CPSS), as well as seven SBCs and the IEEE PELS Students and Young Professional (S&YP) Committee. The Symposium attracted 478 students and young professionals from seven countries, including, but not limited to, China, Singapore, and South Korea ( Figure 1 ).

Abstract:The smart grid (SG) is envisioned as providing a communications network for the energy industry, similar to that which the Internet now provides for business and personal communications. The SG offers new business opportunities for different kind of industries, such as smart-meter vendors, electric utilities, and telecom operators from all around the world. This article deals with issues related to smart homes (SHs) and smart metering, which are key elements in the new SG. It introduces the key players in this field and points out the research challenges. Finally, SG pilot projects and field tests from all around the world and the deployment of advance metering infrastructure projects in North America, Asia, and Europe are summarized.

Abstract:Smart grids (SGs) are reforming towards utilizing massive data for operations and services. During this reform, the information and communication technologies (ICTs) play a critical role, especially for the computing model, which determines how data analytics in SG can be executed. Edge computing (EC), a novel computing paradigm innovation, has high potential to help with the digitization of SG. This paper seeks to provide a comprehensive review of interdisciplinary research on EC applications in SG. First, an in-depth analysis of EC, including the definition, architectures, characteristics, and key enabling technologies is conducted from the perspective of SG application requirements. Afterward, this paper systematically explores application scenarios of EC in SG based on its characteristics. Beyond that, the synergistic effect of the integration of EC and SG is also assessed: SG not only benefits from EC but also supports EC to become sustainable. Challenges and open questions are then investigated.

Abstract:The aim of this special issue was to collect from academic and industrial players, tutorials and surveys related to the latest smart grid and energy related technologies and architectures. Contributions on major developments and updates on smart grid systems are considered. We received a total of 15 submissions from which five were finally accepted for this special issue. Management of energy production and efficient planning of consumption will bring benefits for the economic development. Technology of smart grids will change in the future the structure of the supply of energy towards a decentralization system. This article consist of three main parts, the first concerns the analysis of energy policy in Europe with the most significant factors that shape this policy, the seconde part concerns the presentation of the smart grids solutions essence for electricity and the benefits generated by the process of implementing in the energy system. The third part is devoted to European and Polish projects in the subject of smart meters.

Abstract:Smart grid interoperability is the means to achieve the twin green and digital transition but re-mains heterogeneous and fragmented to date. This work presents the first ideas and corner-stones of an Interoperability Roadmap for the Energy Transition that is being developed by the Horizon Europe int:net project. This roadmap builds on four cornerstones that address open interoperability issues. These are a knowledge base to address the lack of convergence among existing initiatives, a maturity model and a network of testing and certification facilities to ad-dress the lack of practical tools for the industry, and a governance process to address the gap between standards-related approaches of Standards Development Organisations and Research and Innovation projects. A community of practice will be set up to ensure the continuity of the ongoing activities related to smart grid interoperability. To outlive the duration of the int:net project, the aim is to formalise the community of practice as a legal entity.

Abstract:Electric power system is a complex assemblage of equipment and circuits for generating, transmitting, transforming, and distributing electrical energy. The services provided within a power system are classified in terms of destination, commercial feature, and the entity that provides them. The Smart Grid represents a full suite of current and proposed responses to the challenges of electricity supply, demand, and environment. The energy management system provides the system operator with the necessary information to operate the grid from day to day, hour to hour, and minute to minute. A Smart Grid allows the power industry to observe and control parts of the system at higher resolution in time and space. The American National Institute of Standards and Technology developed the Smart Grid conceptual model, which provides a high‐level framework for the Smart Grid. The chapter overviews key technologies and common networking solutions for the Smart Grid applications and introduction of key devices and security features.

Abstract:Effective deployment of Smart Grid technologies requires well-defined and quantified benefits (full-value definition). Depending on the region, country or specific stakeholder, these benefits can be quantified in the areas of technical and business performance, environmental goals, security of electricity supply, and macro-economic growth and business sustainability development. One of the key components to effectively enable full-value realization is technology-the wide range of technical functionalities and capabilities deployed and integrated as one cohesive end-to-end solution supported by a scalability, interoperability and adaptability approach. Many smart grid projects deploy a wide range of smart grid technologies which are driven by regional, country, or utility specific objectives and requirements. These technologies can be broadly captured under the following areas: (1) Low Carbon: e.g. large-scale renewable generation, distributed energy resources (DER), electric vehicles (EV), carbon capture and sequestration (CCS). (2) Grid Performance: e.g. advanced distribution and substation automation (self-healing); wide-area adaptive protection schemes (special protection schemes); wide-area monitoring and control systems (PMU-based situational awareness); asset performance optimization and conditioning (CBM); dynamic rating; advanced power electronics (e.g. FACTS, intelligent inverters, etc.) and many others. (3) Grid Enhanced Applications: e.g. distribution management systems (DMS); energy management systems (EMS); outage management systems (OMS); demand response (DR); advanced applications to enable active voltage and reactive power management (IWC, CWC); advanced analytics to support operational, non-operational and BI decision making; distributed energy resource management; microgrid and Virtual Power Plant (VPP); work force management; geospatial asset management (GIS); KPI dashboards and advanced visualization; and many others. (4) Customer: e.g. Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI); home/building automation (HAN); energy management systems and display portals; EV charging stations; smart appliances and many others. Abstract:Optimization of energy consumption in future intelligent energy networks (or Smart Grids) will be based on grid-integrated near-real-time communications between various grid elements in generation, transmission, distribution and loads. This paper discusses some of the challenges and opportunities of communications research in the areas of smart grid and smart metering. In particular, we focus on some of the key communications challenges for realizing interoperable and future-proof smart grid/metering networks, smart grid security and privacy, and how some of the existing networking technologies can be applied to energy management. Finally, we also discuss the coordinated standardization efforts in Europe to harmonize communications standards and protocols.
