Abstract:The architecture of the Soviet Avant-garde represents an important part in the history of the world's architecture. It has become and continues to be a subject of interest for numerous researchers all over the world since the second half of the 20th century. However, was it well-known before, and who was the first to spread that knowledge? This article aims to study the critical legacy of Italian artist and architect Vinicio Paladini and his role as the first disseminator of the ideas of Soviet Avant-garde architecture in Italy in the 1920s with his article "Lo spirito moderno e la nuova architettura nell'U.R.S.S." This article provides an in-depth analysis of chosen projects and architects as well as attribution of illustrative material alongside the archival research. It establishes the origins of Paladini's interest in the art and architecture of the USSR, surfaces his perception of the characteristics of Soviet architecture, and highlights the importance of his role in promoting Russian modernism in Italy.

Abstract:The article is devoted to the study of random finds made in the Sheremetev estate in August 2020. At the site of the stadium under construction near the northern facade of the Main House of the Sheremetev Castle, we have recorded a few clothing materials (mainly fragments of ceramics) originating from the destroyed cultural layer of the New Time. Abstract:This article is dedicated to the urgency topic of preservation and study of cultural heritage. Because of the limitlessness of the cultural heritage area, the authors took the opportunity to structure the cultural space. They singled out the complex of architecture and urban planning and defined it as an architectural heritage. The named complex includes buildings and structures that incorporate the high construction and artistic skills of their creators and form the surrounding inhabited space. Using the scientific works of N.M. Karamzin, D.S. Likhachev and other investigators, some written and visual sources, the authors of the article reveal the features of the architectural appearance of such medieval cities as Moscow, Novgorod, Pskov, Vologda. It must be note that the close relationship between urban practices and the natural environment as the most important characteristic of architectural heritage is defined. So reviewing historical materials about the ancient Novgorod, academician D.S. Likhachev wrote that unforgettable image of the developed, inhabited country was created. It is important to note that the article contains materials about the death and destruction of architectural monuments, which required their protection. An overview of the monument protection activity in Russia made known that the Imperial Russian Archaeological Society, established in 1846, was pioneered in it. It is noted that the Moscow Archaeological Society achieved the greatest success in the protection and restoration of monuments of church and civil architecture in the middle of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Its creators and leaders, spouses A.S. and P.S. Uvarov, had the right to permit or prohibit the restoration and conversion of ancient structures in many cities of the country, and they used this right actively. The events of the 1917 Revolution changed the situation in the architectural heritage area. Identification and protection of architectural monuments was transferred to the state structures. A department for museums and protection of art and antiquities was established as part of the National Education Commissariat (Narcomat of Education). Units of this department formed around the country were called as committees for museums and protection of monuments of art and antiquities. The article reports on the results of the identification and preservation of architectural monuments in Siberian cities Tomsk and Kuznetsk. It is known that in the 1930s many church monuments and civil structures were destroyed in Russia. Still in 1940–1990s the monument protection activity received serious legislative support from the state power. So facts and their interpretation taken together allow the authors to talk about architectural heritage as a phenomenon of Russian history, requiring study and preservation.
The Importance of Historical Scientific Communities of the Late XIX – Early XX Centuries in Matters of Protection of Cultural Heritage Sites

Abstract:The article reviews the main historical scientific communities that functioned in the Russian Empire in the post-reform period – the Moscow Archaeological Society, the Russian Archaeological Society, the Russian Geographical Society, and a number of church scientific and historical organizations. Their characteristics are given, brief historical circumstances of the emergence of such organizations are summarized, their activities, which directly influenced the processes of protection of cultural heritage objects, are considered. At the same time, some special methodological issues of cultural heritage protection are considered in detail, such as the “Notes for the Review of Russian Antiquities”, compiled by the famous ethnographer, folklorist, paleographer I.P. Sakharov, dedicated to Orthodox religious monuments. The main issues of monument protection of the first archaeological congress in 1869 are considered, such as: on the most accurate definition of the method and techniques in the study of monuments; on measures to preserve and make known monuments of pagan and Christian antiquity in Russia; drawing up detailed instructions for archaeological research; terminology of Russian archaeology; on the compilation of archaeology.
Church of the Nativity of Christ in the village of Purnema of Onezhsky District of Archangelsk Region as an example of stave temple architecture of the late XIX century in the European North of Russia

Abstract:This article is dedicated to the history of temple complex of the rural settlement of Purnema of Onezhsky District of Archangelsk Region, where in the early XX century was situated the three-part ensemble comprised of two churches – tent-roofed Nikolskaya (1618), Church of the Nativity of Christ (1860-1861), and a bell tower that survived until the early 1930s. Relevance of the topic is substantiated by the fact that the monuments of stave architecture, masterpieces of temple architecture of the Russian North are vanishing, and the North loses its cultural uniqueness. The aforementioned temple complex is one of the few preserved in the Russian North. Attention is turned to the current state of the temple complex, status and significance of monuments, their boundaries, current state protection regime, and the need for taking immediate measures to preserve them as the objects of cultural heritage in the historical environment. The goal of this research consists in determination of the distinctness of temple complex in the village of Purnema within the cultural-historical landscape of the Russian North and its present significance. The scientific novelty is defined by the fact that the history of the Church of the Nativity of Christ has not previously been the subject of special research among historians and art historians. The article employs archival data and documentary photographs that are newly introduced into the scientific discourse. The acquired results allow concluding that the monument should become state registered. The practical importance of this work is that the presented materials can be used in elaboration and implementation of the state strategy aimed at preservation and development of unique Northern and Arctic cultural landscapes, historical settlements, monuments of religious and civil architecture, their scientific restoration, museification and revalorization.

Abstract:This paper explores conversion into Christianity of Old Believers, who were working at the Aleksandrovsky factory in the city of Petrozavodsk in the 19th century, and were heavily influenced by members of the religious commune of the Vygovskaya monastery. The Aleksandrovsky cannon factory was an important strategic object for the Russian Empire. This is why the Old Believers working there were not repressed, but subjected to ideological re-education. One of the measures of the latter was the construction of the Church of Alexander Nevsky in 1826–1832 in Petrozavodsk. The study of the culture of local Old Believers and their relations with the Russian authority and Orthodox Church based on the academic works of N. A. Basova, V. V. Efimova, N. Y. Kuznetsova, M. V. Pulkin, I. N. Ruzhinskaya and T. V. Sorokina. The description of religious, ideological and aesthetic aspects of the Church’s architecture drew on an article by K. E. Tyukova and archive documents published in featured compilations by the National Archive of the Republic of Karelia, as well other archive materials academically introduced by the author of the article. Their interpreting was in keeping with the context of semiotic approach designed by Y. M. Lotman and B. A. Uspensky. The researchers homologated the notions of culture and text; they suggested viewing Russian culture of the Empire period as an area of interaction between two traditions: Russian Orthdox culture and imperial culture founded by Peter I. The scholars established that interaction between these two was happening in the process of interpretation of every cultural opposition of “ours” and “theirs”, where “ours” was defined through contraposing it against “theirs”. The present paper is the first to study the construction of the Church of Alexander Nevsky in Petrozavodsk as a textual activity of the authority aimed at converting the Old Believers working at the Aleksandrovsky factory into Christianity, and the image of the church itself as a cultural text that reflected the concepts, values and narratives of the first trimester of the 19th century. The author came to a number of conclusions. The semiotic analysis or rites performed by Orthodox priests in the process of the construction of the church, and actions taken by the administration of the cannon factory, showed that a new semiotic system had been formed amongst the Old Believers working at the factory. The focus of that system of symbols was the idea of the empire. A number of religious and state symbols had been incorporated into the design of the temple and the temple activities, which transferred the image of the holy Alexander Nevsky onto the image of Emperor of Alexander the First. The transformation of the culture of Old Believer factory workers was being performed by the authorities on the basis of the cultural code of the times of Peter the Great, where “ours” was the idea of the empire, and the contraposed “theirs” was Old Belief. Discrepancy between the two radical members of the opposition would be alleviated by homologating the Old Believers idea of revering the spiritual guide with the idea of deification of the Emperor.
Sacred New Building: Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Reval and the Spread of Orthodoxy in the Governorate of Estonia at the End of the 19th — Beginning of the 20th Century

Abstract:The article analyzes the formation of the imperial policy to spread Orthodox Christianity using the example of the construction of the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Revel in the Governorate of Estonia. Late 19th — early 20th century was marked by significant changes in the governance of the region, not only in the administrative and legal sphere, but also in the religious one. Estonia administration viewed strengthening the presence of the Orthodox Church through the mass construction of churches and the symbolic development of space as one of the most effective means of integrating the province and the empire. The construction of the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Reval was associated with significant historical events, including the 200th anniversary since Estonia became a part of Russian Empire. It determined its central role in the representation of the empire on the outskirts. At the same time, the prevalence of the Lutheran population in the province, as well as the economic dominance of the German nobility, caused difficulties with the construction process. The search for funds and the choice of a place for the Cathedral were the main reasons why the implementation of such a large-scale project took so long. Cathedral was designed to visually emphasize that the region was a part of the Russian Empire. The analysis of the preparatory work, using unpublished office materials from various departments, made it possible to identify contradictions between central and local authorities on this issue, as well as to understand the mechanisms of their interaction within the framework of existing practices. The materials of personal and official correspondence of key political and religious actors involved show different understanding of the goals and means how to spread Orthodox Christianity in the region at the turn of the 19th — 20th century.

Abstract:Purpose: The article is devoted to the analysis of the peculiarities of the system of relations that were formed between the Orthodox Church and the authority of the Russian state in the early modern period. Methodology: The authors, based on the most recent research approaches of the characteristics of early modern states, use a number of examples to show the significant role of the church and its hierarchy which had both an effect on the secular authority actions, limited its power and represented the political role of the Russian state and society. Result: The authors point out to the informality, unfounded in any formal legislative acts. This informality allowed the church to respond flexibly to the demands of the moment, but at the same time weakened its position. The authors also point out that that being the only independent Orthodox Church; the Russian church imposed certain limitations on its actions as an independent force of the supreme power, which later served as one of the factors that caused the subordination of the church to the state and its transformation into integral element of the machinery of government. Applications: This research can be used for universities, teachers, and students. Novelty/Originality: In this research, the model of the State and the Church in Russia in the Early New Age: Custom and Law is presented in a comprehensive and complete manner.
Ground-penetrating radar scanning and historical interpretation of the location of the destroyed Epiphany Cathedral in Kyiv Brotherhood Monastery (Ukraine)

Abstract:Background: The article presents results of a ground penetrating radar (GPR) scanning carried out in a site of the Epiphany Cathedral of Brotherhood Monastery in Kyiv, Ukraine, destroyed in 1936 by the Soviets. The Cathedral is known as a burial site of Hetman Petro Sahaidachnyi (1582-1622), a Ukrainian Cossack political and civic leader, guardian and patron of Kyiv Brotherhood Monastery. The collection of archival documents, blueprints, stock sources, photographs and cartographic materials of the 17th-19th centuries, as well as historical works of the 19th-21st centuries, were thoroughly analyzed and used as a basis for the interpretation of geophysical results. The set of historical data covers the period from 1615, that is, from the beginning of the construction of the wooden Epiphany Church, the predecessor of the cathedral, to the present day. Methods: Summarized information about the construction, restoration after the fire, functioning and destruction of the Cathedral, as well as about the construction on its site in the 20th century, archaeological research in the 20th-21st centuries, was used to clarify possible location of hidden foundations and target GPR measurements. In this context, written testimonies of archaeologists who personally observed the foundations of the cathedral became especially valuable. The shielded GPR antennas, with a central frequency of 300 MHz and 700 MHz, is used for non-invasive investigation. Results: GPR scanning specified the site and showed the best-preserved group of foundations of the western wall of the Epiphany Cathedral. Conclusions: An integrated historical and geophysical study provided the basis to certify the foundation of the Epiphany Cathedral as a protected object of cultural heritage and facilitated its archaeological research.
Archival materials of V. F. Odoevsky at the Russian national museum of music

Abstract:This article is dedicated to the materials of the archives of Prince V. F. Odoevsky, a remarkable Russian musician-researcher, author of the first publications on the theory of znamenny chant. Talking about the manuscripts of V. F. Odoevsky, the author dwells in more detail on those that are in the Russian National Museum of Music and makes a general overview of the fund and its history. The collection of V.F. Odoyevsky's RNMM includes the Prince's musical compositions, materials for the study of folk songs and church hymns, theoretical works on harmony, acoustics, Odoyevsky's letters, notebooks, bills, receipts, photographic materials, handwritten notes from Odoyevsky's library, printed materials and programs, as well as literary manuscripts and other materials by various authors. In general, most of the completed works on Old Russian art by V.F. Odoevsky have been published. A huge number of different drafts and excerpts often represent different versions of the same works. The article goes on to describe the manuscript "Russian Ancient Church Hymn" (f. 73 No. 219), it was not completed by Odoevsky and was not published. It touches on most of the provisions expressed by Odoevsky in published articles, in particular, articles for the Archaeological Congress in Moscow.

Abstract:The emergence of new technologies has dynamized the way in which cultural heritage is documented, preserved, and passed on to new generations; something that determines a paradigm shift in terms of research in this field. Most operations now also have access to the virtual component. In this context, the current study aimed to make accessible through virtual and augmented reality one of the most interesting objectives belonging to the Jewish cultural heritage built in Art Nouveau style in the municipality of Oradea (Romania), which currently functions as a La Belle Epoque Museum. In the study, the techniques of terrestrial, aerial photogrammetry, and terrestrial laser scanning were used to remodel, in a three-dimensional format, as faithful as possible and usable in different applications, the special architecture of the exterior of the monument. This information was doubled by making the interior of the monument accessible through a complete and complex series of panoramic images interconnected within a virtual tour that will be made available to tourists interested in discovering the Darvas-La Roche House. The virtual tour, which includes both graphic, textual, and audio information, represents an innovative approach for the buildings built in Art Nouveau style in the municipality of Oradea, representing a virtual bridge for better promotion of the tourist destination and for the awareness of the local people regarding the importance of preserving and appreciating the local cultural heritage. This is all the more important as this is the first initiative to make the Art Nouveau buildings in Oradea Municipality accessible to the general public in an innovative way.

Abstract:This article reveals the historical and urban significance of the magistrate in the town of Nizhyn, and explaines the necessity of its reconstruction. There is a description of restoration reconstruction methods. This work also gives the examples of reproduction of historical buildings around the world and in Ukraine. The author's approach to reproduction and ways of using a rebuilt building had been proposed in this article.In 1625 Nizhyn granted the Magdeburg Law. It meant that the town became self-governing. The magistrate was responsible for the administration, household and law. The magistrate building was the center of the composition of the Cathedral Square and played a key role in the town-planning ensemble.The new brick building was erected instead of the wooden one by Andrii Kvasov which had been damaged by fire at the end of XVIII century. It was two-storey building in the style of classicism with trading rows beside. Unfortunately, the building was ruined due to the series of unpleasant occasions. But there are the architect Kartashevskiy’s drawings of the magistrate which he made during the building repair. So it is possible to do the restoration reconstruction which means the construction of a new structure in the same place and in the same forms as previously existing object.There are a lot of examples of reproduction of the historical buildings in the world such as an Old Town in Warsaw, Riga Town Hall in Latvia, the Saint Marco Cathedra’s bell tower in Venice, Saint Michael’s Cathedral in Kyiv etc.The only part of building which is preserved now is the underground floor filled in with soil. So the reconstructed building must be separated from the original part. In order to achieve this, basement should be strengthened and restored first. The new building must be placed on the platform with pile foundation apart from the basement. The reproduced building can be used with its original purpose. It is possible to move the part of the City Council there or the museum of the Magdeburg Law.Moreover, the reconstruction of the magistrate is important now because of the 400 year anniversary of the granting Nizhyn a Magdeburg Law in 2025.
At the Origins of the Masonic Phenomenon: Freemasons in the English State of 15th — 17th Centuries

Abstract:The author considers the crisis events of medieval craft structures in England. The focus of his attention is the modernization of guilds and liveried companies of masons-builders. The analysis was carried out using special sources and scientific literature. This allowed us to draw a number of important conclusions. It is noted that the crisis processes observed in the economy of England of the 15—17th Centuries had a decisive influence on the evolution of the guild institution. These structures, in particular, construction guilds received the status of liveried companies. Subsequently, the craft Masonry of England was transformed into an enlightenment community. The study showed that his ideology provided for the allegorical use of building craft symbols. In particular, members of the Royal Society in London are named the project’s inspirers. Its main goal is the “construction” of a new society, religion and the formation of a new man. The author also emphasizes that the phenomenon of new Masonry should not be associated with the activities of a secret organization. In his opinion, the initial stage in the history of the Masonry in England should be associated with the influence of the Freemasonry of Scotland. However, at the beginning of the 18th Century, the intellectual elite of England managed to seize the initiative. The intellectual elite was the first to establish the work of the transnational structures of the new Masonic movement.

Abstract:The paper delivers a comprehensive historical and ethnographic study of the natural and architectural landscape of the village of Kushereka, Onega District (Uyezd) of the Arkhangelsk Province. Back in the early 20th century, in the church community this village was known as “the center of the Schism”. The authors look into a system of landscape and architectural materials and narrative texts that preserve and convey collective (regional) historical memory. The field research conducted in 1996–1999 and 2019–2020 revealed the transformation of historical memory from the period of the village’s thriving to its current state. The key events in the historical experiences of the local residents were recorded and interpreted through the lens of universal folklore motives. The laws of creation and transmission of historical memory are revealed in the texts (speech), in the architecture, in everyday practices. The architectural history of the village and its layout, reconstructed based on archival data, are also regarded as a source of historical memory. The specific features of speech in the descriptions of the churches testify to the same value and semantic coordinates of culture as the oral tradition. The study carries methodological value for revealing “the idea of place” of local territories, as well as practical significance for the reconstruction of sociocultural and architectural landscapes of an abandoned Pomor settlement.

Abstract:This article identifies emergence and development of «brick» style, its influence on architecture of buildings. The reasons for which this style got its popularity and was used in the mass construction of buildings and structures have been determined. As an example, the buildings of objects of cultural heritage of the city of Voronezh, belonging to educational institutions, some of which still retain their original function of an educational institution. The research concluded that the buildings, made in «brick» style, should be preserved, their value in the architectural and planning structure of the city and the historical and cultural significance of buildings in the formation of the architectural appearance of streets was determined. Conclusions were made about the problems of reconstruction of the urban area in the historical development and preservation of cultural heritage objects in the conditions of changing the street space during the construction of modern buildings. Brief recommendations are given, which will avoid a number of problems when designing new buildings in the conditions of historical urban development.

Abstract:The article presents research data using arhaeoastronomical methods of Levinsadovka settlement sacrificial complex in Northern Black Sea coast. In this work, new method of accounting terrain elevations using topographic maps was developed in arhaeoastronomical studies. Calculations of azimuths of the sun and moon rise and set in the astronomically significant moments of the year were made and astronomical regularities in the organization of the sacrificial complex identified. Related to the moon directions, as the most dedicated, identified. Revealed that the stone tools and fragments, used as sacrifices, mark the direction to the northern minor standstill moonrise. A similar situation was found on two archaeological sites: in Bezymennoye II settlement South sanctuary and in Pustynka settlement religious building. Drawing on ethnographic and folklore data, it is concluded about semiotic connection of stone tools, found in these religious constructions, with the "thunderstones" and meteorites.ut semiotic connection of stone tools, found in these religious constructions, with the "thunderstones" and meteorites.

Materials and Studies on Archaeology of Sub-Carpathian and Volhynian Area

Abstract:The report contains materials about the first archaeological research of Lutsk, conducted by scientists of the Russian Empire from the mid-nineteenth to early twentieth century. The attention of researchers was attracted primarily by Lutsk Upper Castle, which was caused by both historical memory and sporadic finds in the castle of interesting and valuable things. During 1854–1856, research was conducted here with the ambitious goal of finding the tomb of Lubart and other princes. These works caused a great resonance and became the impetus for further excavations. Information about accidental finds on the territory of Lutsk Castle is extraordinary, especially when it concerns valuable cult objects. Often the history of finds did not end with the fact of their discovery. The documents of the time to clarify the value are interesting, and as a consequence, the identification of successors or owners of valuables, especially in the context of government and church. Insignificant, often fragmentary and extremely limited information about such finds becomes especially important because in the absence of the things themselves this is almost the only source for the formation of an objective history of the earliest archaeological research in Lutsk. In general, the initial stage of archaeological study of Lutsk begins with the first known research (1854) and lasts until the XI Archaeological Congress, when all materials or reports known at that time were systematized and published accordingly. The restoration of the archaeological study of Lutsk Castle and the historical part of the city took place only in the 1930s by scientists of the Polish state. Abstract:The article analyzes material pertaining to the museums in Moscow as described in the diaries of German philosopher Walter Benjamin (1892–1940), American art historian and the first director of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City Alfred H. Barr Jr. (1902–1981) and his associate director Jere Abbott (1897–1982). They wrote the diaries during their visits to Moscow in the second half of the 1920s. The reminiscences of the three foreign cultural figures contain important observations and interesting opinions about the workings of museums and give us an extensive picture of the life and activities of Moscow museums in the 1920s. Excerpts from Jere Abbott’s diary have been translated into Russian for the first time by the author of this article. Studying the sources and analyzing the documents from the museological perspective has helped to broaden our knowledge about the art museums in Moscow in the 1920s.

Abstract:The article represents a research of the traditional houses from the Republic of Moldova specific to the period XVIII - XX centuries. Life, always conditioned by life, is a major program that, in the vernacular architecture of the Republic of Moldova, plays the role of the function of continuity. The main objectives of this article are to bring in heritage practice, beneficial information, both for the historical monument and for architects, specialists and the general public interested in the future of heritage objects, locally or nationally and how they influence the factors of decision involved. The slow transformations, recorded over the last two thousand years, in which we distinguish evidence of its evolution, are the result of slow transformations, both of techniques and instructional materials, as well as of the specific occupations and way of life sec. XVIII - XX. Starting from the semi-buried dwellings, the surface houses with a single level, constituted the architectural solutions with the widest spread on the whole territory of the country, until the middle of the century. XX. The architecture of traditional residential buildings - plan, size and appearance - were influenced by physical, social, historical, geographical conditions, the natural environment and the specifics of the household. The knowledge of the architecture of the traditional house contributes to the reconstruction of some aspects of the ancient culture, inextricably linked to the problem of the continuity of the local population on these lands. In the architecture of the traditional house, the normative thinking, common at the technical level of the society, is combined with the adaptation to the individual requirements. The lack of this information, especially important for those interested in the fate of the architectural heritage, can cause serious damage to the historical monument, namely the loss of structural elements, functional and stylistic elements, elements of composition, volume and structure. The ambiguities can distort the real value of the monuments and even the loss of the value of architectural heritage, so the historical monument becomes vulnerable in the future.
