Abstract:Predicting the crystal structure of an energetic compound is an important aspect of energetic crystal engineering because an accurate crystal structure prediction (CSP) presents a base for accurately predicting almost all properties and performances. Therein, a sufficiently accurate intermolecular force field is required. In this work, a tailor-made OPLS-AA force field (TM OPLS-AA FF) for the 2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitro-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexaazaisowurtzitane (CL-20) molecule is refitted based on quantum chemical calculations with a dispersion-corrected density functional M06-2X. Based on the FF, all of the three experimentally observed polymorphs of CL-20, ε-, β- and γ-formed CL-20, are accurately predicted as ranked 2, 1, and 1 in the energy landscapes, respectively. Meanwhile, the geometric packing similarity check exhibits a small deviation of the prediction from the experimental. Moreover, many thermodynamically feasible crystal structures with densities >2.0 g/cm3, even as high as 2.099 g/cm3, are ascertained on the energy landscapes, providing a useful complement to experimental screening for the possible polymorphs. All these validate the FF. Abstract:2,4,6,8,10,12-Hexanitro-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexaazaisowurtzitane (CL-20) is the most powerful explosive. However, the application of this compound is limited by its high sensitivity and serious polymorphic transformations. Thus, elucidating the mechanism of crystallization and polymorphic transformation of CL-20 is crucial. This work presents a comparative study of experiments and calculations to clarify the mechanism of CL-20 precipitation using an solvent/antisolvent method. Calculations show that the β-formed CL-20 conformations are always the most energetically favored. These conformations have generally the highest content in solutions, and the intermolecular conformational transformations in solutions have low energy barriers. In addition, it is predicted that the β-CL-20 crystal possesses the lowest lattice energy among all polymorphs. The calculated results are successfully applied to explain the experimental observations, as β-CL-20 crystal is initially precipitated from most of the highly supersaturated solutions and then converted into ε-CL-20 crystal. This precipitation is kinetically controlled by the dominance of β-CL-20 molecules in a metastable phase and rapid crystallization. The final conversion into ε-CL-20 crystal is attributed to its low energy barrier for polymorphic transformation and stability, that is, the conversion is dynamically dominated. Furthermore, calculated coherent energy densities (CEDs) of various CL-20 polymorphs, including hydrates with different hydration degrees, agree well with the thermal stabilities, as the higher CED corresponds to the higher thermal stability. Therefore, the complex crystallization of CL-20 is elucidated by combining experimental observations with theoretical calculations and simulations.
Systematic and Automated Development of Quantum Mechanically Derived Force Fields: The Challenging Case of Halogenated Hydrocarbons

Abstract:A robust and automated protocol for the derivation of sound force field parameters, suitable for condensed-phase classical simulations, is here tested and validated on several halogenated hydrocarbons, a class of compounds for which standard force fields have often been reported to deliver rather inaccurate performances. The major strength of the proposed protocol is that all of the parameters are derived only from first principles because all of the information required is retrieved from quantum mechanical data, purposely computed for the investigated molecule. This a priori parametrization is carried out separately for the intra- and intermolecular contributions to the force fields, respectively exploiting the Joyce and Picky programs, previously developed in our group. To avoid high computational costs, all quantum mechanical calculations were performed exploiting the density functional theory. Because the choice of the functional is known to be crucial for the description of the intermolecular interactions, a specific procedure is proposed, which allows for a reliable benchmark of different functionals against higher-level data. The intramolecular and intermolecular contribution are eventually joined together, and the resulting quantum mechanically derived force field is thereafter employed in lengthy molecular dynamics simulations to compute several thermodynamic properties that characterize the resulting bulk phase. The accuracy of the proposed parametrization protocol is finally validated by comparing the computed macroscopic observables with the available experimental counterparts. It is found that, on average, the proposed approach is capable of yielding a consistent description of the investigated set, often outperforming the literature standard force fields, or at least delivering results of similar accuracy.

Abstract:A normal coordinate analysis appropriate for two weakly bound rigid rods is developed. Asymmetric top centrifugal distortion constants and published vibrational frequencies are employed in the normal coordinate analysis to obtain the intermolecular force field and refinements in the structural parameters. The analysis permits a more accurate interpretation of the observed Cl quadrupole coupling constant suggesting that the hydrogen bonding in this complex causes a decrease in the magnitude of the electric field gradient at Cl by 8±1% from that in the free HCl monomer. These methods also suggest that hydrogen bonding decreases the electric field gradient at deuterium in C2H2⋅ ⋅ ⋅DF by 10% and increases the corresponding H–F bond length by 1%.

Abstract:A mayor obstacle for the prediction of the crystal structures of organic molecules is the discrepancy between the small size of typical lattice energy differences and the limited accuracy of force fields or pure density functional theory (DFT) calculations.We present a hybrid method for the calculation of accurate lattice energy differences that combines DFT calculations using the VASP program with empirical Van der Waals (VdW) potentials.The key to success is the careful adjustment of the empirical potentials, in particular in the region of intermediate interatomic distances, where both the DFT component and the VdW component yield a significant contribution to the total interaction energy.We have fitted the empirical parameters for H, B, C, N, O, S, F, Cl and Br to molecular C 6 coefficients and to the unit cells of low temperature crystal structures.The unit cell volumes and the cell lengths are typically reproduced to within 1%.Energy ranking studies have been conducted for a variety of molecules, including acetylene, ethylene, ethane, methane, acetic acid, urea, paracetamol and several molecules from the first two CCDC blind tests on polymorph prediction.The experimental low temperature crystal structures are generally found as the most stable predicted crystal structures.In several cases, the most stable packing motif is expressed in more than one space group, giving rise to tiny energy differences of less than 1kcal/mol per molecule.

Abstract:Polarizable force fields are gradually becoming a common choice for ionic soft matter, in particular, for molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of ionic liquids (ILs) and deep eutectic solvents (DESs). The CL&Pol force field introduced in 2019 is the first general, transferable, and polarizable force field for MD simulations of different types of DESs. The original formulation contains, however, some problems that appear in simulations of ethaline and may also have a broader impact. First, the originally proposed atomic diameter parameters are unbalanced, resulting in too weak interactions between the chlorides and the hydroxyl groups of the ethylene glycol molecules. This, in turn, causes an artificial phase separation in long simulations. Second, there is an overpolarization of chlorides due to strong induced dipoles that give rise to the presence of peaks and antipeaks at very low q-vector values (2.4 nm-1) in the partial components of the structure factors. In physical terms, this is equivalent to overestimated spatial nanoscale heterogeneity. To correct these problems, we adjusted the chloride-hydroxyl radial distribution functions against ab initio data and then extended the use of the Tang-Toennis damping function for the chlorides' induced dipoles. These adjustments correct the problems without losing the robustness of the CL&Pol force field. The results were also compared with the nonpolarizable version, the CL&P force field. We expect that the corrections will facilitate reliable use of the CL&Pol force field for other types of DESs.

A molecular mechanical model for N-heterocyclic carbenes

Abstract:In this work we present a set of force fields for nine synthetically relevant and/or structurally interesting N-heterocyclic carbenes, including imidazol-, thiazol-, triazol-, imidazolidin-, and pyridine-ylidenes. The bonding parameters were calculated by using a series of geometry optimizations by ab initio methods. For fitting the non-bonding interactions, a water molecule was employed as a probe. The interaction energy between the carbene and the probe molecule was sampled along two coordinates for each carbene, representing the interaction through the lone pair, or the π system of the molecule. The corresponding reference interaction energies were obtained by CCSD(T)/CBS calculations. To describe the direction dependence of the intermolecular potential energy, an extra, massless Coulombic interaction site was included for all carbenes, which represents the lone pair of the divalent carbon atom. The resulting fitted carbene force field (CaFF) showed a robust behavior regarding probe molecule, as changing the molecular mechanical water model, or employing, instead, an OPLS methanol molecule did not introduce significant deviations in the potential energies. The obtained CaFF models are easy to merge with standard OPLS or AMBER force fields, therefore the molecular simulations of a large number of N-heterocyclic carbenes becomes available.

Abstract:The spectroscopic effects of electron-phonon coupling in mixed-valence chlorine-bridged Pt chains complexes are investigated through a parallel infrared and Raman study of three compounds with decreasing Pt-Pt distance along the chain. The e-ph interaction is analyzed in terms of the Herzberg-Teller coupling scheme. We take into account the quadratic term and define a precise reference state. The force field relevant to this state is constructed, whereas the electronic structure is analyzed in terms of a simple phenomenological model, singling out a trimeric unit along the chain. In this way we are able to account for all the available optical data of the three compounds, and to estimate the relevant microscopic parameters, such as the e-ph coupling constants and the CDW amplitude.

Abstract:A parameterization strategy for molecular models on the basis of force fields is proposed, which allows a rapid development of models for small molecules by using results from quantum mechanical (QM) ab initio calculations and thermodynamic data. The geometry of the molecular models is specified according to the atom positions determined by QM energy minimization. The electrostatic interactions are modeled by reducing the electron density distribution to point dipoles and point quadrupoles located in the center of mass of the molecules. Dispersive and repulsive interactions are described by Lennard-Jones sites, for which the parameters are iteratively optimized to experimental vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) data, i.e. vapor pressure, saturated liquid density, and enthalpy of vaporization of the considered substance. The proposed modeling strategy was applied to a sample set of ten molecules from different substance classes. New molecular models are presented for iso-butane, cyclohexane, formaldehyde, dimethyl ether, sulfur dioxide, dimethyl sulfide, thiophene, hydrogen cyanide, acetonitrile, and nitromethane. Most of the models are able to describe the experimental VLE data with deviations of a few percent.

Abstract:Force fields based on a Lennard-Jones (LJ) 12-6 plus point charge functional form are developed for acetone and chloroform specifically to reproduce the minimum pressure azeotropy found experimentally in this system. Point charges are determined from a CHELPG population analysis performed on an acetone-chloroform dimer. The required electrostatic surface for this dimer is determined from ab initio calculations performed with MP2 theory and the 6-31g++(3df,3pd) basis set. LJ parameters are then optimized such that the liquid-vapor coexistence curve, critical parameters, and vapor pressures are well reproduced by simulation. Histogram-reweighting Monte Carlo simulations in the grand canonical ensemble are used to determine the phase diagrams for the binary mixtures acetone-chloroform, acetone-methanol, and chloroform-methanol. The force fields developed in this work reproduce the minimum pressure azeotrope in the acetone-chloroform mixture found in experiment. The predicted azeotropic composition of x(CHCl3) = 0.77 is in fair agreement with the experimental value of x(CHCl3)expt = 0.64. The new force fields were also found to provide improved predictions of the pressure-composition behavior of acetone-methanol and chloroform-methanol when compared to other force fields commonly used for vapor-liquid equilibria calculations. NPT simulations were conducted at 300 K and 1 bar for equimolar mixtures of acetone-chloroform, acetone-methanol, and methanol-chloroform. Analysis of the microstructure reveals significant hydrogen bonding occurring between acetone and chloroform. Limited interspecies hydrogen bonding was found in the acetone-methanol or chloroform-methanol mixtures.
Development of All-Atom Empirical Potentials for Phloroglucinol (Phg) and Hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene (HCCP) Based on their Crystal Phase Structures

Abstract:Two existing generic force fields have been augmented with partial charges and tuned in order to give intercompatible all-atom empirical potentials that can satisfactorily represent the known crystal phase structures of the organic phloroglucinol (Phg) (C6H6O3) and inorganic hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene (HCCP) (N3P3Cl6) molecules at several temperatures. It has been proposed that HCCP-Phg network polymers could act as efficient H2 barrier layers in hydrogen storage tanks for cars. However, essential requirements for modeling such networks are adequate representations of both monomers in their pure dense phases using a common form of force field. Tests of their ability to maintain stable crystal structures have been made using classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations on large 800-molecule supercells. The force fields have been optimized to match the densities calculated from the experimental unit cell dimensions at ambient conditions as well as the intermolecular potential energy, as estimated from experimental enthalpies of sublimation. For Phg, the crystal structure is stabilized by a network of hydrogen bonds and the Coulombic interactions contribute to over 55% of the total intermolecular potential energy. In contrast, the crystal structure of HCCP is intrinsically stabilized by the van der Waals terms. Both optimized force fields reproduce very well the orthorhombic symmetry of their respective crystals under constant-pressure NPT conditions. The model parameters tuned at ambient temperature also give reasonable agreement with crystallographic data at lower temperatures.

Abstract:The hybrid Hartree-Fock density functional theory (HF-DFT) method was employed with the combined use of CEP-121G(d,p) for H, N, F, and Cl, and RCEP(d) for Br and I to produce the equilibrium structures for both component molecules and the title charge-transfer (CT) complexes. Results are close to experimental data. The intermolecular stretching force constant k derived from the parabolic fit of its energy curve is parallel to the experimental value. The excellent linear relationship between the calculated k and the binding energy Eg shows the consistency of the present work in describing the intermolecular bonding intensity. The step-by-step charge-transfer model was proposed to directly evaluate the extent of intra- and intermolecular CT. The intermolecular CT amount, delta(1), is not large, in accordance with the weak bonding in the complex. But the CT effect is found to be significant in determining the bonding strength. delta(1) is parallel to the dipole moment of the complex. The change of the total dipole moment in the complex formation can be used in the quantitative assessment of the electrostatic and nonelectrostatic contributions of the intermolecular bonding.
A Transferrable Coarse-Grained Force Field for Simulations of Polyethers and Polyether Blends

Abstract:We developed a transferable coarse-grained (CG) force field to cover polyethers and polyether blends in this work. On the basis of the perturbation theory of liquids and high-temperature expansion, we examined the theoretical foundation of using a temperature-dependent function to represent the nonbonded interactions. Using a mapping rule that balances molecular representation with the degree of coarse-graining, we defined seven CG beads that represent common polyethers. A hybrid parametrization workflow combining bottom-up and top-down approaches was applied to derive the force field parameters. The large ratio between the number of training data and the number of adjustable parameters enables the resulting force field to accurately predict many polymer properties, including cohesive energies, structural parameters, glass-transition temperatures, and surface tensions. Extension of the CL&Pol Polarizable Force Field to Electrolytes, Protic Ionic Liquids, and Deep Eutectic Solvents

Abstract:The polarizable CL&Pol force field presented in our previous study, Transferable, Polarizable Force Field for Ionic Liquids (J. Chem. Theory Comput. 2019, 15, 5858, DOI: http://doi.org/10.1021/acs.jctc.9b0068910.1021/acs.jctc.9b00689), is extended to electrolytes, protic ionic liquids (PIL), deep eutectic solvents (DES), and glycols. These systems are problematic in polarizable simulations because they contain either small, highly charged ions or strong hydrogen bonds, which cause trajectory instabilities due to the pull exerted on the induced dipoles. We use a Tang-Toennies (TT) function to dampen, or smear, the interactions between charges and induced dipole at a short range involving small, highly charged atoms (such as hydrogen or lithium), thus preventing the "polarization catastrophe". The new force field gives stable trajectories and is validated through comparison with experimental data on density, viscosity, and ion diffusion coefficients of liquid systems of the above-mentioned classes. The results also shed light on the hydrogen-bonding pattern in ethylammonium nitrate, a PIL, for which the literature contains conflicting views. We describe the implementation of the TT damping function, of the temperature-grouped Nosé-Hoover thermostat for polarizable molecular dynamics (MD) and of the periodic perturbation method for viscosity evaluation from non-equilibrium trajectories in the LAMMPS MD code. The main result of this work is the wider applicability of the CL&Pol polarizable force field to new, important classes of fluids, achieving robust trajectories and a good description of equilibrium and transport properties in challenging systems. The fragment-based approach of CL&Pol will allow ready extension to a wide variety of PILs, DES, and electrolytes.
A transferable ab-initio based force field for aqueous ions

Abstract:We present a new polarizable force field for aqueous ions (Li+, Na+, K+, Rb+, Cs+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Sr2+ and Cl-) derived from condensed phase ab-initio calculations. We use Maximally Localized Wannier Functions together with a generalized force and dipole-matching procedure to determine the whole set of parameters. Experimental data is then used only for validation purposes and a good agreement is obtained for structural, dynamic and thermodynamic properties. The same procedure applied to crystalline phases allows to parametrize the interaction between cations and the chloride anion. Finally, we illustrate the good transferability of the force field to other thermodynamic conditions by investigating concentrated solutions.

Abstract:NpT ensemble Monte Carlo simulations were performed for fully flexible Lennard-Jones chains in the solid phase. The bond length between monomers within the chains is fixed to $L=\sigma$ and the molecule is free to adopt any configuration. The solid structure of fully flexible chains is obtained by randomly locating the bonds of the chain within a face centered cubic close packed arrangement of atoms. For fully flexible chains it is believed that the stable solid phase is disordered. Such a solid is considered in this work. Computer simulations were performed for chains with $m=3, 4$ and 5 monomer units, and results were obtained for the equation of state and internal energy of the chains. It is found that Wertheim's TPT1 successfully predicts the equation of state and internal energies of fully flexible LJ chains in the solid phase. Finally, a rigid LJ chain in a linear configuration has been considered. Computer simulations were also performed for the rigid chain in an ordered solid structure. It is found that fully flexible and linear rigid chains present quite different equations of state and different thermodynamic properties in the solid phase.

Abstract:The conformational equilibria of selectively halogenated cyclohexanes are explored both experimentally (VT-NMR) for 1,1,4,-trifluorocyclohexane 7 and by computational analysis (M06-2X/aug-cc-pVTZ level), with the latter approach extending to a wider range of more highly fluorinated cyclohexanes. Perhaps unexpectedly, 7(ax) is preferred over the 7(eq) conformation by ΔG = 1.06 kcal mol^(-1), contradicting the accepted norm for substituents on cyclohexanes. Abstract:The response of the trimethylammonium-iodinechloride and diiodide (TMA–ICl/I 2 ) crystal structures have been examined under high pressure using neutron powder diffraction. TMA–ICl exhibits impressive pressure-driven electronic flexibility, where the N· · · I–Cl interactions progressively encompass all the distances represented in analogous structures recorded in the Cambridge Structural Database. Comparison with the TMA–I2 complex reveals that this flexibility is owed to the electronegativity of the chlorine atom which induces increased distortion of the iodine electron cloud. This structural flexibility may be influential in the future design of functional molecular materials.

Force field study of catechol dimers and catechol-(H2O)n clusters

Abstract:Force field parameters were developed for catechol and used to produce optimized structures of catechol dimers and catechol-(H2O)n clusters. The force field optimized structures for the catechol dimer and catechol-(H2O)n (with n = 1 and 2) clusters are benchmarked against quantum chemistry calculations at the B3LYP and w97XD levels of theory; with the quantum chemistry calculations taking into account basis set superposition error. The force field predicts, in agreement with B3LYP and w97XD reasonable structures and relative binding energies for two dimer structures and six catechol-(H2O)n clusters (with n = 1, 2). The developed forcefield parameters are then used to conduct molecular dynamics (MD) simulations for catechol-(H2O)15 cluster to highlight the effect of increased coordination number on the H-bond network around catechol with potential impact on the reactivity of catechol towards ozone in wet conditions. The result of MD simulations suggests that water molecules form a cage of H-bonds network around the hydroxyl groups of catechol, thereby blocking the active sites on catechol.
