Abstract:Sulfur cathode has attracted great interest in recent years due to its high energy density. However, dramatic reduction in cathode energy density and sulfur shuttle effects during charge and discharge processes result in poor battery performance. A new water-based sulfur cathode binder, poly(styrene-b-n-butyl acrylate-b-styrene) (SnBAS) was designed and synthesized via RAFT emulsion polymerization in this study. Polymer membranes of the prepared binder were employed to study swelling ratio of the material in an ether electrolyte. The properties of the binder were compared with those of PS, PnBA and a commercial SBR binder, and the results show that SnBAS binders with proper St/nBA weight ratios can significantly improve battery performance. Cathodes with SnBAS have satisfactory mechanical strength and appropriate swelling ratios in the electrolyte. The sulfur cathode prepared with the binder shows capacity of 781 mAh·g-1 at 0.2C after charge and discharge cycles at 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1, 2, 0.1C, which has a capacity retention rate of 73.6%. The specific capacity is 740 mAh·g-1 after additional 100 cycles at 0.2C, which corresponds to capacity decay of 0.05% per cycle and a capacity retention rate of 94.7%. This work demonstrates that SnBAS is a promising water-based binder for sulfur cathode of lithium–sulfur batteries.

Abstract:To construct structurally stable sulfur cathode of Li-S battery with improved cycling performance, poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) crosslinked by cationic hydroxypropyl polyrotaxane (HPRN + ) via dynamically reversible boronic ester bonds is synthesized and serves as the cathode binder. The smart polymer networks offer multifunction including buffering the volume change of the cathode during charge/discharge through the pulley effect of polyrotaxanes (PR), suppressing the shuttle effect by adsorption of polysulfide using the plentiful carboxyl, hydroxyl and quaternary ammonium cationic groups, and self-healing the micro-damages to ensure stable conduction pathways of the electrode. As a result, the Li-S batteries based on this novel multifunctional binder and simple commercial sulfur/carbon composites cathode exhibit excellent specific capacity and cycling stability. In particular, the specific capacity decay per cycle of the cell is only 0.064% along with high Coulombic efficiency after 550 cycles at 1.0 C, which is superior to most of the reported binders. Even under high sulfur loading, moreover, the cathode can deliver superior areal capacity and cycling stability. This proposed binder provides a new way for the design of high-stability sulfur cathodes.
In-situ crosslinked binder for high-stability S cathodes with greatly enhanced conduction and polysulfides anchoring

Abstract:An in-situ crosslinked binder based on a new chlorine-containing anionic copolymer for high-performance lithium-sulfur battery is fabricated. The elaborately constructed and optimized network structure shows excellent adhesion strength and suitable electrolyte swellability that ensuring the electrode integrity during long-term cycling. The abundant electron-donating groups on the polymer networks endow sulfur cathode with high lithium-ion conduction and polysulfide-trapping capacity, promoting the electrochemical kinetics. These effects are proved by cyclic voltammetry tests, UV-Vis absorption spectrum, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and density-functional theory calculation (DFT). Consequently, sulfur cathode with this crosslinked binder exhibits a high initial capacity of 1038.1 mAh g-1 and high capacity retention of 77.4% after 800cycles at 0.5C. After 800cycles at 1.0C, the sulfur cathode holds a discharge capacity of 684.2 mAh g-1 and a capacity decay of only 0.033% per cycle. What's more, the cathode still gains a discharge capacity exceeding 800 mAh g-1 at the rate of 3C. This work gives an effective method to design functional binder for high-performance sulfur cathode with polysulfide-trapping and ion-transporting features.
Water-Soluble Trifunctional Binder for Sulfur Cathodes for Lithium–Sulfur Battery

Abstract:Conventional polymer binder in a lithium–sulfur (Li–S) battery, poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), suffers from insufficient ion conductivity, poor polysulfide-trapping ability, weak mechanical property, and requirement of organic solvents, which significantly encumber the industrial application of Li–S battery. Herein, a water-soluble binder with trifunctions, covalently cross-linked quaternary ammonium cationic starch (c-QACS), is developed to confront these issues. Similar to the poly(ethylene oxide) solid electrolytes, the c-QACS binder remarkably improves Li<sup>+</sup> ion transfer capacity. The abundant O actives endow the c-QACS binder with admirable lithium polysulfide-trapping capability to retard the shuttle effect. In addition, the formed 3D network effectively maintains the electrode integrity during cycling. Abstract:High loading sulfur cathode is a vital ingredient for the application of high-energy-density Li-S battery. However, the traditional PVDF binder with inherent defects, such as relatively weak adhesion, inferior Li+ conduction, and poor polysulfides adsorption, is not suitable for sulfur cathode, especially at high sulfur loading. Herein, the multifunctional LiPAA/PVA binder with crosslinked three-dimensional structure was proposed to substitute PVDF binder. Benefiting from the effective polysulfides adsorption and successful conduction of electron and Li+, the sulfur cathode with LiPAA/PVA binder exhibited superior rate and cycle performance. Even at high sulfur loading of 4.0 mg/cm(2), the LiPAA/PVA based cathode also shows a highest areal capacity of 3.03 mA h/cm(2), matching the requirement for high energy density of Li-S battery. Additionally, owing to the low price and water solubility of LiPAA and PVA, the fabrication of LiPAA/PVA based cathode could be finished through an low-cost and environmentally friendly process, demonstrating the potential of LiPAA/PVA binder to realize high loading sulfur cathode in the field of large-scale Li-S battery.

Abstract:Lithium polysulfide (LiPS) shuttling and sulfur volume change causing degradation of electrodes have hindered the practical application of lithium–sulfur batteries. Here, a highly elastic and polar block polymer binder, poly(acrylic acid)-b-((poly(n-butyl acrylate)-co-poly(2,2,3,4,4,4-hexafluorobutyl acrylate))-b-poly(acrylic acid) (PAA-b-(PnBA-co-PHFBA)-b-PAA), was designed and synthesized to both accommodate sulfur volume change and confine LiPSs. The rigid–soft modulated triblock polymer combined the traditional polar binder PAA, low glass-temperature PnBA, and high-polarity PHFBA. The resultant binder can not only adjust the striking volume expansion and inhibit disintegration of a pure sulfur cathode but also strongly anchor LiPSs. The cycle stability and rate performance of lithium–sulfur batteries were significantly improved after being incorporated with the multifunctional binder. Besides, abundant F atoms can enhance ionic conductivity to improve electrochemical reaction of the sulfur cathode. Abstract:Volume expansion and polysulfide shuttle effect are the main barriers for the commercialization of lithium-sulfur（Li-S） battery.In this work,we in-situ polymerized a cross-linked binder in sulfur cathode to solve the aforementioned problems using a facile method under mild conditions.Polycarbonate diol（PCDL）,triethanolamine（TEA） and hexamethylene diisocyanate（HDI） were chosen as precursors to prepare the cross-linked binder.The in-situ polymerized binder（PTH） builds a strong network in sulfur cathode,which could restrain the volume expansion of sulfu r.Moreover,by adopting functional groups of oxygen atoms and nitrogen atoms,the binder could effectively facilitate transportation of Li-ion and adsorb polysulfide chemically.The Li-S battery with bare sulfur and carbon/sulfur composite cathodes and cross-linked PTH binder displays much better electrochemical performance than that of the battery with PVDF.The PTH-bare S cathode with a mass loading of 5.97 mg/cm~2 could deliver a capacity of 733.3 mAh/g at 0.2 C,and remained 585.5 mAh/g after 100 cycles.This in-situ polymerized binder is proved to be quite effective on restraining the volume expansion and suppressing polysulfide shuttle effect,then improving the electrochemical performance of Li-S battery.
A functional hyperbranched binder enabling ultra-stable sulfur cathode for high-performance lithium-sulfur battery

Abstract:Binders are of vital importance in stabilizing the cathodes to enhance the cycling stability of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. However, conventional binders are typically confronted with the drawback of inability for adsorbing lithium polysulfide (LiPS), thus resulting in severe active material losing and rapid capacity fading. Herein, a novel water-soluble hyperbranched poly(amidoamine) (HPAA) binder with controllable hyperbranched molecular structure and abundant amino end groups for Li-S battery is designed and fabricated, which can improve efficient adsorption for LiPS and stability of the sulfur cathodes. Besides, the strong intermolecular hydrogen bonds in HPAA binder can contribute to the structural stability of S cathode and integration of the conductive paths. Therefore, the Li-S battery with this functional binder exhibits excellent cycle performance with a capacity retention of 91% after 200 cycles at 0.1 C. Even at a high sulfur loading of 5.3 mg cm−2, a specific capacity of 601 mA h g−1 can also be achieved. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation further demonstrates that the enhanced electrochemical stability derives from the high binding energy between amino groups and LiPS and the wide electrochemical window (6.87 eV) of HPAA molecule. Based on the above all, this functional polymer will lighten a new species of binders for eco-friendly sulfur cathodes and significantly promote the practical applications of high-performance Li-S batteries.

Abstract:Binders play an important role in battery systems. The lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries have poor cycling performance owing to large volume alteration of sulfur and shuttle effect. Herein, a novel water-soluble functional binder (named GN-BA) is prepared by the cross-linking effect between gelatin and boric acid. The excellent binder can effectively maintain the integrated electrode stable, buffer the volume changes, prevent active materials exfoliation from current collectors, and anchor polysulfides by chemical bonding. Sulfur electrodes in this binder also exhibit a loosely stacked porous structure, which is advantageous to the electrolyte permeation and fast ion diffusion. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations further verified that the binder can anchor polysulfides by forming BOLi, COLi, and CNLi chemical bonds. At 0.5 C, a high initial capacity of 980 mA h g−1 can be obtained, which is higher than those sulfur cathodes with traditional poly(vinylidene fluoride) binder. When the sulfur loading is up to 5.0 mg cm−2, a high areal specific capacity of 5.7 mA h cm−2 and excellent cycling stability are achieved. This study proposes an economical and environmentally friendly strategy for the construction of advanced binders and promotes the practical application of high-energy Li–S batteries.

Exploiting a Robust Biopolymer Network Binder for an Ultrahigh-Areal-capacity Li–S Battery

Abstract:High-loading electrodes play a crucial role in the practical applications of high-energy-density batteries,which are especially challenging for lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries. Herein, a mechanically robust network binder was constructed by weaving dual biopolymers (i.e., guar gum and xanthan gum) via the intermolecular binding effect of extensive functional groups in both polymers. This network binder was capable of effectively preventing polysulfides within the electrode from shuttling and, consequently, improved electrochemical performance. A remarkably high sulfur loading of 19.8 mg cm -2 and an ultrahigh areal capacity of 26.4 mA h cm -2 were achieved as a result of the robust mechanical properties of the network binder. This study paves a new way for obtaining high-energy-density batteries by the simple application of robust network biopolymer binders that are inherently low-cost and environmentally friendly.

Abstract:A Li-S battery with enhanced cycleability is developed using a multi-functional binder with cation-conductive polymer and polysulfide absorbents. The binder is composed of Li+-Nafion, polyvinylpyrrolidone, and nano silica. Macroporous carbon (MPC) is employed for sulfur retention in cathode. The multi-functional binder regulates tetrasulfide movement only in MPC pores during lithiation and delithiation cycling. The resultant Li-S battery shows excellent performance in discharge capacity and rate cycleability. The sulfur lithiation capacity reaches 1373 mAh g(-1) at 0.2C (0.335 A g(-1) of S) and 470 mAh g(-1) at 5C (8.375 A g(-1) of S). A rate capacity as high as 809 mAh g(-1) has been achieved after 300 cycles at 1C charge discharge rate. The Li-S battery showed very low capacity degradation rate of 0.08% per cycle at 1C rate. Abstract:To achieve practical high energy density of Li-S battery, it is crucial to construct high-loading sulfur electrodes. However, the poor mechanical stability and severe shuttle effect of high-loading sulfur cathodes during cycling limit the cycling stability. Herein, a mechanically robust network binder with strong affinity towards polysulfides has been designed to stabilize the high-loading sulfur electrode. Lithium polysilicate (LSO) possesses abundant strong polar Si-O and Si = O bonds, which not only can effectively adsorb polysulfides but also firmly connect tamarind polysaccharide gum (TPG) biopolymer chains. As a result, the c-LSO-TPG binder can efficiently maintain the integrity of high-loading sulfur cathode and suppress the polysulfide shuttling during cycling. In particular, under a high sulfur loading of 5.4 mg cm−2, the sulfur electrode can run 200 cycles steadily, delivering an areal capacity of 2.7 mAh cm−2. This provides a new avenue for the research and development of robust binders for high-loading and long-lifespan Li-S batteries.

Highly Stabilized Sulfur Cathode with Natural Fenugreek Gum As Binder

Abstract:To address instability of sulfur cathode in lithium-sulfur batteries, we propose a novel binder, a water-soluble natural polymer fenugreek gum (FG). Physical characterizations demonstrate that FG exhibits outstanding mechanical strength, adhesion and ductility compared with traditional binder polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). Especially, FG possesses strong adsorption capability to trap the polysulfieds, as verified by immersion tests and density functional theory calculations. With these features, FG as binder provides the sulfur cathode with remarkable cycling stability, which presents a capacity retention of 91.6% with a Coulombic efficiency of 98.7% after 250 cycles at 0.5 C, compared to the 62.9% and 95.4% of the sulfur cathode using PVDF as binder. Impressively, FG outperforms other natural polymers that have been reported as the binders of sulfur cathodes.
Sulfur Electrode Tolerance and Polysulfide Conversion Promoted by the Supramolecular Binder with Rare-Earth Catalysis in Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Abstract:The binder that maintains electrode integrity and provides electron/ion transport channels is insufficient for high-performance lithium -sulfur (Li -S) batteries. Multifunctional and environmentally friendly binders with minimal lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) escape and accelerated LiPSs conversion kinetics are critical for sustainable Li -S batteries. Herein, we proposed a new versatile supramolecular polymer binder synthesized by hydrogen bonding crosslinking between hydrolysable polymer matrix and yttrium -pyridine complex in aqueous solutions, denoted as GB -Y. This unique environmental -friendly binder based on supramolecular chemistry could (1) maintain the integrity of sulfur cathode through the mechanical toughness contributed by synergistic effect of hydrogen bonds and robust chemical bonds, (2) anchor LiPSs by lithiophilic effects, and (3) accelerate LiPSs conversion by electrocatalysis of rare-earth catalysis sites (Y3+) as Lewis acids. With above benefits of GB -Y binder, the Li -S batteries with GB -Y binder deliver a high discharge capacity of 1201.5 mAh g - 1 and an excellent cyclability over 800 cycles. This binder exhibits a commercial potential in view of capacity release under high -sulfur loading of 6.56 mg cm -2 with lean electrolyte (electrolyte/sulfur (E/S) ratio of 10 mu l mg- 1). This study provides a concept of binders with three efficacies, i.e. adhesion, adsorption, and catalysis, and offers an innovative and environmentally friendly strategy for the construction of advanced binder with supramolecular chemistry manner to promote the practical application of Li -S batteries.

Abstract:Here, a multi‐functional binder with flame retardant, self‐healing, high conductivity and abundant polar groups is prepared, which can effectively inhibit shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides, repair the crack caused by volume expansion, accelerate the redox kinetics and improve the safety of the Li‐S batteries. In this work, a multifunctional binder with self‐healing, flame retardant, high conductivity, and abundant polar groups is prepared by the free radical polymerization method and applied to Lithium–Sulfur (Li‐S) batteries to achieve high safety and exceptional electrochemical performance. The self‐healing characteristic of binder induced by intermolecular hydrogen bonds and SS dynamic covalent bonds can repair volume expansion cracks. The polar groups and excellent conductivity endue binder with strong chemisorption on polysulfides and fast charge transportation, which can effectively inhibit the shuttle effect and accelerate polysulfides redox kinetics. More important, the considerable flame retardant performance of binder can improve the safety of the LiS batteries. As a result, the LiS cells using FHCP binder deliver an outstanding cycle stability of a high‐capacity retention rate of 85% after 100 cycles at 0.2 C, and a high reversible area specific capacity of 5.25 mAh cm–2 at a sulfur loading of 4.72 mg cm–2 and a correspondingly lean electrolyte condition (E/S ratio = 6 μL mg–1).

Abstract:Binder as one of the important components in lithium sulfur (Li–S) battery determinates the stability of the active electrode. However, the volume expansion, poor ionic conductivity and the dissolution of polysulfides in sulfur cathode with traditional binders still restrict the application of Li–S battery. Herein, a water-soluble functional binder (HMM/PAA) is elaborately designed to realize the strong interaction with polysulfide and the good mechanical property via a condensation reaction between polyacrylic acid (PAA) and hexamethylolmelamine (HMM). The abundant polar groups in HMM/PAA could anchor polysulfide and impede their migration. The electron-rich oxygen-containing groups would promote the ion transfer for rapid kinetic reaction by coupling with lithium ion. Moreover, the cross-linked network endues the HMM/PAA binder with the good mechanical properties, contributing to the electrode integrity and avoiding the electrode cracks. Therefore, the HMM/PAA-based battery delivers the excellent rate performance and good capacity retention of 838.2 mAh g−1 at 0.2 C even with the sulfur loading of 5.7 mg cm−2. This work provides an economical and effective strategy for water-soluble binder in high-performance Li–S battery.

Abstract:The practical application of lithium‐sulfur batteries with high theoretical energy density and readily available cathode active materials is hampered by problems such as sulfur insulation, dramatic volume changes, and polysulfide shuttling. The targeted development of novel binders is the most industrialized solution to the problem of sulfur cathodes. Herein, an aqueous conductive emulsion binder with the sulfonate‐containing hard elastic copolymer core and the conjugate polymer shell, which is capable of forming a bicontinuous mesoscopic interpenetrating polymer network, is synthesized and investigated. Not only can the elastic skeleton formed by the copolymer bind the active substance under drastic volume changes, but also the rich ester and cyanide groups in it can effectively capture lithium polysulfide. Meanwhile, the conducting skeleton consisting of poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene) both provides the additional charge conduction pathways and acts as the redox intermediates, significantly accelerating the kinetic process of lithium polysulfide conversion. Based on the synergistic effect of the above mechanisms, the use of the prepared binder on the sulfur carbon cathode significantly improves the rate performance and cycle stability of lithium sulfur batteries.

Abstract:Abstract As one of the important ingredients in lithium‐sulfur battery, the binders greatly impact the battery performance. However, conventional binders have intrinsic drawbacks such as poor capability of absorbing hydrophilic lithium polysulfides, resulting in severe capacity decay. This study reports a new type of binder by polymerization of hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) diglycidyl ether with polyethylenimine, which enables strongly anchoring polysulfides for high‐performance lithium sulfur batteries, demonstrating remarkable improvement in both mechanical performance for standing up to 100 g weight and an excellent capacity retention of 72% over 400 cycles at 1.5 C. Importantly, in situ micro‐Raman investigation verifies the effectively reduced polysulfides shuttling from sulfur cathode to lithium anode, which shows the greatly suppressed shuttle effect by the polar‐functional binder. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis into the discharge intermediates upon battery cycling reveals that the hydrophilic binder endows the sulfur electrodes with multidimensional Li‐O, Li‐N, and S‐O interactions with sulfur species to effectively mitigate lithium polysulfide dissolution, which is theoretically confirmed by density‐functional theory calculations.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have shown promises for the next-generation, high-energy electrochemical storage, yet are hindered by rapid performance decay due to the polysulfide shuttle in the cathode and safety concerns about potential thermal runaway. To address the above challenges, herein, we show a flame-retardant cathode binder that simultaneously improves the electrochemical stability and safety of batteries. The combination of soft and hard segments in the polymer framework of binders allows high flexibility and mechanical strength for adapting to the drastic volume change during the Li (de)intercalation of the S cathode. The binder contains a large number of polar groups, which show the high affinity to polysulfides so that they help to anchor active S species at the cathode. These polar groups also help to regulate and facilitate the Li-ion transport, promoting the kinetics of polysulfide conversion reaction. The binder contains abundant phosphine oxide groups, which, in the case of battery's thermal runaway, decompose and release PO· radicals to quench the combustion reactions and stop the fire. Consequently, Li-S batteries using the new cathode binder show the improved electrochemical performance, including a low-capacity decay of 0.046% per cycle for 800 cycles at 1 C and favorable rate capabilities of up to 3 C. This work offers new insights on the practical realization of high-energy rechargeable batteries with stable storage electrochemistry and high safety.
