Abstract:An investigation of the feasibility of in-situ electrokinetic remediation for toxic metal contaminated soil driven by microbial fuel cell (MFC) is presented. Results revealed that the weak electricity generated from MFC could power the electrokinetic remediation effectively. The metal removal efficiency and its influence on soil physiological properties were also investigated. With the electricity generated through the oxidation of organics in soils by microorganisms, the metals in the soils would mitigate from the anode to the cathode. The concentrations of Cd and Pb in the soils increased gradually through the anode to the cathode regions after remediation. After about 143days and 108 days' operation, the removal efficiencies of 31.0% and 44.1% for Cd and Pb at the anode region could be achieved, respectively. Soil properties such as pH and soil conductivity were also significantly redistributed from the anode to the cathode regions. The study shows that the MFC driving electrokinetic remediation technology is cost-effective and environmental friendly, with a promising application in soil remediation.

Abstract:Increased human, agricultural and industrial activities along with improper waste disposal leads to high levels of soil contamination and accumulation of recalcitrant contaminants in the environment. This global issue demands the use of green and sustainable technologies and soil microbial fuel cells (SMFC) can be a potential solution. We adopted minimalistic designs, based on low-cost carbon materials without any expensive catalyst and membrane, which makes the SMFCs suitable for in-field applications. We investigated the ability of the indigenous microbial population of the soil to use organic contaminants as the source of carbon and the enrichment of the electroactive consortium was monitored over time onto the electrode surface of the SMFCs. We tested performance in soil contaminated with pesticide and soil contaminated with hydrocarbons and compare the microbial enrichment process with respect to the case of non-contaminated soil.

Abstract:The microbial fuel cell (MFC) system is a promising environmental remediation technology due to its simple compact design, low cost, and renewable energy producing. MFCs can convert chemical energy from waste matters to electrical energy, which provides a sustainable and environmentally friendly solution for pollutant degradations. In this review, we attempt to gather research progress of MFC technology in pollutant removal and environmental remediation. The main configurations and pollutant removal mechanism by MFCs are introduced. The research progress of MFC systems in pollutant removal and environmental remediation, including wastewater treatment, soil remediation, natural water and groundwater remediation, sludge and solid waste treatment, and greenhouse gas emission control, as well as the application of MFCs in environmental monitoring have been reviewed. Subsequently, the application of MFCs in environmental monitoring and the combination of MFCs with other technologies are described. Finally, the current limitations and potential future research has been demonstrated in this review.

Abstract:Microbial fuel cells is growing technology for energy production (electrical and gaseous) with potential electrochemically active bacteria from degradation of unwanted contaminants. Electrogenic [petroleum-contaminated soil (PCS) and hot spring water HSW)] and electrotrophic [activated sludge] bacterial communities were enriched and evaluated for electric current production in biocathode microbial fuel cells (MFC). Molecular phylogenetic (454 pyrosequencing) analysis of environmental samples revealed an overall change in bacterial density and diversity after second-stage enrichment. The predominant electrogenic bacteria grown at anodic biofilms belonged to phylum Proteobacteria (80–98%) in both MFC-1 (PCS) and MFC-2 (HSW) reactors. After enrichment, the major shift in the bacterial species on anodic surface was observed in case of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (89%) and shewanella sp. (15%) in the respective reactors. Overall, among electrotrophic bacteria, the relative abundance (27–30%) of Pseudomonas aeruginosa was maximum on the cathodic biofilm in both fuel cells. Scanning electron and confocal laser scanning microscopies of biofilms revealed that anode and cathode surfaces were covered with different microcolonies and dispersed bacterial cells. Cyclic voltammetry (− 1 to 1 V vs. Ag/AgCl) further confirmed the presence of highly proficient electrogenic bacteria capable of generating high electricity ranging from ≥ 8 mA in MFC-1 and ≤ 0.37-Y in MFC-2. Maximum power density of 5500 mW m−2 at a current density of 100 mA m−2 (550 Ω)] was recorded in MFC-1 during enrichment stage 2; however, it (Pmax = 1201 mW m2) remained 78% lower in MFC-2. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and COD removal [86% (SD = 8.3 ± 2.0)] of anolyte (PCS) confirmed active degradation of petroleum contaminants during the operation of MFC-1.

Abstract:Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) is an innovative bio-electrochemical approach which converts biochemical energy inherent in wastewater into electrical energy, thus contributing to circular economy. Five electrogenic bacteria, Kocuria rosea (GTPAS76), two strains of Bacillus circulans (GTPO28 and GTPAS54), and two strains of Corynebacterium vitaeruminis (GTPO38 and GTPO42) were isolated from a common effluent treatment plant (CETP) and were used individually as well as in consortium form to run double chambered "H" type microbial fuel cell. Individually they could produce voltage in the range of 0.4-0.7 V in the MFC systems. Consortium developed using GTPO28, GTPO38, GTPAS54 and GTPAS76 were capable of producing voltage output of 0.8 V with 81.81 % and 64 % COD and BOD reduction, respectively. The EPS production capacity and electricity generation by the isolated bacteria correlated significantly (r = 0.72). Various parameters like, effect of preformed biofilm, length of salt bridge and its reuse, aeration, substrate concentration and external resistance were studied in detail. The study emphasizes on improving the commercialization aspect of MFC with repeated use of salt bridge and improving wastewater treatment potential after optimization of MFC system. Polarization curve and power density trends were studied in optimized MFC. A maximum power density and current density achieved were 18.15 mW/m2 and 370.37 mA/m2, respectively using 5 mM sodium benzoate. This study reports the use of sodium benzoate as a substrate along with reusing of the salt bridge in MFC study with promising results for BOD and COD reduction, proving it to be futuristic technology for bio-based circular ecosystem development.

Abstract:Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is an emerging technology which has been immensely investigated for wastewater treatment along with electricity generation. In the present study, the treatment efficiency of MFC was investigated for hydrocarbon containing wastewater by optimizing various parameters of MFC. Mediator-less MFC (1·2 l) was constructed, and its performance was compared with mediated MFC with Escherichia coli as a biocatalyst. MFC with electrode having biofilm proved to be better compared with MFC inoculated with suspended cells. Analysis of increasing surface area of electrode by increasing their numbers indicated increase in COD reduction from 55 to 75%. Catholyte volume was optimized to be 750 ml. Sodium benzoate (0·721 g l-1 ) and actual common effluent treatment plant (CETP) wastewater as anolyte produced 0·8 and 0·6 V voltage and 89 and 50% COD reduction, respectively, when a novel consortium of four bacterial strains were used. Twenty MFC systems with the developed consortium when electrically connected in series-parallel connection were able to generate 2·3 V and 0·5 mA current. This is the first report demonstrating the application of CETP wastewater in the MFC system, which shows potential of the system towards degradation of complex organic components present in industrial wastewater.

Abstract:Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) have become more prevalent in groundwater remediation due to their capacity for power generation, removal of pollution, ease of assembly, and low secondary contamination. It is currently being evaluated for practical application in an effort to eliminate groundwater pollution. However, a considerable majority of research was conducted in laboratories. But the operational circumstances including anaerobic characteristics, pH, and temperature vary at different sites. In addition, the complexity of contaminants and the positioning of MFCs significantly affect remediation performance. Taking the aforementioned factors into consideration, this review summarizes a bibliography on the application of MFCs for the remediation of groundwater contamination during the last ten decades and assesses the impact of environmental conditions on the treatment performance. The design of the reactor, including configuration, dimensions, electrodes, membranes, separators, and target contaminants are discussed. This review aims to provide practical guidance for the future application of MFCs in groundwater remediation.

Abstract:The most common type of environmental contamination is petroleum hydrocarbons. Sustainable and environmentally friendly treatment strategies must be explored in light of the increasing challenges of toxic and critical wastewater contamination. This paper deals with the bacteria-producing biosurfactant and their employment in the bioremediation of hydrocarbon-containing waste through a microbial fuel cell (MFC) with Pseudomonas aeruginosa (exoelectrogen) as co-culture for simultaneous power generation. Staphylococcus aureus is isolated from hydrocarbon-contaminated soil and is effective in hydrocarbon degradation by utilizing hydrocarbon (engine oil) as the only carbon source. The biosurfactant was purified using silica-gel column chromatography and characterised through FTIR and GCMS, which showed its glycolipid nature. The isolated strains are later employed in the MFCs for the degradation of the hydrocarbon and power production simultaneously which has shown a power density of 6.4 W/m3 with a 93% engine oil degradation rate. A biogenic Fe2O3 nanoparticle (NP) was synthesized using Bambusa arundinacea shoot extract for anode modification. It increased the power output by 37% and gave the power density of 10.2 W/m3. Thus, simultaneous hydrocarbon bioremediation from oil-contamination and energy recovery can be achieved effectively in MFC with modified anode.

Abstract:Bioremediation of diesel contaminants and then harnessing the bioenergy could be another cost‐effective and eco‐friendly solution to hydrocarbons soil contaminants. Four series of parallel circuit air–cathode MFCs (100 mL working volume) were operated under different diesel concentrations using acclimated bacterial consortium from diesel contaminated soil. Maximum current (Imax = 43.11 mA) under applied potential was recorded using fuel cell (DMFC-3 1 DMFC-3 = 50mlL−1 diesel concentration in microbial fuel cells. 1 ) fed with 50 mlL−1 diesel (substrate), whereas it was 10 mA in DMFC-1 2 2 DMFC-1 = 0mlL−1 diesel concentration in microbial fuel cells. (0 mlL−1), Imax of 9.6 mA in DMFC-2 3 DMFC-2 = 10mlL−1 diesel concentration in microbial fuel cells. 3 (10 mlL−1) while in DMFC-4 4 4 DMFC-4 = 100mlL−1 diesel concentration in microbial fuel cells. (100 mlL−1) Imax of 18.47 mA was recorded. Cyclic voltammogram and CLSM clearly indicated the effect of different diesel concentrations on the electrogenic performance of anode respiring bacteria (ARB). Six less explored, culturable species of ARB enriched bacteria on anodic biofilms in DMFC-3 were procured and characterized on molecular basis (16S rRNA gene) as Paenibacillus sp. (MN173851), Bacillus toyonensis (MN173853), Ochrobactrum sp. (MN173857), Bacillus sp. (MN173854), Bacillus methylotrophicus (MN173856), and Bacillus licheniformis (MN173855). Bioelectrochemical activity of Bacillus toyonensis (MN173853) was typically monitored for the first time in MFC reactors. Among the tested organisms, Bacillus sp., was found to have greatest biodegradation capability with rate of 88% followed by Paenibacillus sp. 85%, Ochrobactrum sp. 79% by fast decolourization of redox indicator. The present study verified the presence and suitability of ARB under the influence of diesel in MFCs.

Abstract:Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is an outstanding technology recently creating the headlines relating to energy and environment field that been discovered since the earlier 20th century. It has been furthered implemented for energy renewable through simultaneous bioremediation of wastes. MFC works by converting chemical energy store in the waste into electrical energy with the help of selected microorganisms. Regarding to this, the principle of bioremediation was applied using MFC as the renewable energy where the microorganisms consume the substrate thus generating electrical energy. Many studies done by researches are mostly focusing on MFC utilizing waste and measuring the power generation on different type of MFC but lack of studies on the effect of series and parallel circuit in MFC setup and how does it differentiate the outcome of the studies. This paper reviews the history, working principle, design of MFC, classification of different substrates and its power output and the effect of series and parallel circuit of MFC setup for simultaneous bioremediation and energy recovery.

Abstract:Bioremediation is a cost-effective and eco-friendly approach to decontaminate soils polluted by petroleum hydrocarbons. However, this technique usually requires a long time due to the slow degradation rate by bacteria. By applying U-tube microbial fuel cells (MFCs) designed here, the degradation rate of petroleum hydrocarbons close to the anode (<1?cm) was enhanced by 120% from 6.9?+/-?2.5% to 15.2?+/-?0.6% with simultaneous 125?+/-?7?C of charge output (0.85?+/-?0.05?mW/m2, 1?kO) in the tested period (25 days). Hydrocarbon fingerprint analysis showed that the degradation rate of both alkanes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was accelerated. The decrease of initial water content from 33% to 28% and 23% resulted in a decrease on charge output and hydrocarbon degradation rate, which could be attributed to the increase of internal resistance. A salt accumulation was observed in each reactor due to the evaporation of water from the air-cathode, possibly inhibited the activity of exoelectrogenic bacteria (EB) and resulted in the elimination of the current at the end of the tested period. The number of hydrocarbon degradation bacteria (HDB) in soil close to the anode increased by nearly two orders of magnitude in the MFC assisted system (373?+/-?56?x?103?CFU/g-soil) than that in the disconnected control (8?+/-?2?x?103?CFU/g-soil), providing a solid evidence for in situ biostimulation of HDB growth by colonization of EB in the same system. Abstract:With the advent of global industrialisation and adaptation of smart life there is rise in anthropogenic pollution especially in water. Remediation of the pollutants (such as metals, and dyes) present in industrial effluents is possible via microbes and algae present in the environment. Microbes are used in a microbial fuel cell (MFC) for remediation of various organic and inorganic pollutants. However, for industrial scale application coupling the MFCs with photocatalytic and photoelectric fuel cell has a potential in improving the output of power. It can also be used for remediation of pollutants more expeditiously, conserving fossil fuels, cleaning environment, hence making the coupled hybrid fuel cell to run economically. Furthermore, such MFC inbuilt with algae in living or powder form give additional value addition products like biofuel, polysaccharides, biopolymers, and polyhydroxy alkanoates etc. This review provides bird's eye view on the removal of environmental pollutants by different biological sources like bacteria and algae. The article is focussed on diatoms as potential algae since they are rich source of crude oil and high value added products in a hybrid photocatalytic MFC. It also covers bottle necks, challenges and future in this field of research.

Abstract:The global energy crisis and heavy metal pollution are the common problems of the world. It is noted that the microbial fuel cell (MFC) has been developed as a promising technique for sustainable energy production and simultaneously coupled with the remediation of heavy metals from water and soil. This paper reviewed the performances of MFCs for heavy metal removal from soil and water. Electrochemical and microbial biocatalytic reactions synergistically resulted in power generation and the high removal efficiencies of several heavy metals in wastewater, such as copper, hexavalent chromium, mercury, silver, thallium. The coupling system of MFCs and microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) successfully reduced cadmium and lead without external energy input. Moreover, the effects of pH and electrode materials on the MFCs in water were discussed. In addition, the remediation of heavy metal-contaminated soil by MFCs were summarized, noting that plant-MFC performed very well in the heavy metal removal.

Abstract:Malodorous surface water is an important worldwide environmental concern. Current remechation methods, such as aeration or the addition of chemicals, are not eco-friendly clue to their high energy consumption or secondary pollution. This study proposed a modified columnar air -cathode microbial fuel cell as a sustainable and effective remediation module to improve water quality. The excellent and economic sheet air -cathode (activated carbon and carbon black as the catalyst layer) and a carbon brush anode were applied in the columnar air -cathode microbial fuel cell (MFC). The results after 48 h showed that by providing the anode as an electron acceptor and enriching electrochemically -active bacteria, MFCs with different external resistances (5 k Omega, 30 Omega, and 2 Omega) exhibited the much better capacity to improve water quality than the Blank group. The maximum COD and sulfide removal rates in the MFCs were approximately 86.3% and 10008, respectively, which were higher than those of the Blank group by 30% and 35%, respectively. The MFCs also showed maximum sulfate increments from 28 mg L-1 to 98 mg L-1 compared with the sulfate reduction to 10 mg L-1 in the Blank group. The oxidation reduction potential (ORP) of the Mils dramatically increased from -281.2 mV to -135.7 mV after 24 h, whereas the ORP of the Blank group decreased to -287.7 mV. The enrichment of the aerobic bacteria Acinetobacter on the anodes and chemolithoautotrophic sulfide oxidation bacteria Sulturicurvum, Thiovirga and Thiobacillus in the MFCs could also contribute to COD and sulfide removal. Cathode reduction, which could produce small amounts of hydroxyl radicals, might assist with the ORP elevation and the complete oxidation of dissolved sulfide to sulfate. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. Application of microbial fuel cell technology to the remediation of compound heavy metal contamination in soil

Abstract:Exploring the removal rules of MFC on composite heavy metal pollution is very important for the future development and field application of MFC. We constructed a three-chamber soil MFC and the results showed that with the gradual deterioration of soil heavy metal contamination from single heavy metal to metals in different oxidation states (e.g., copper (II), lead (II), and chromium (III) compounds), the internal resistance of the soil MFC increased by 2.16-2.71 times, which significantly inhibited the power production performance of the MFC. After 59 days of remediation, the migration removal efficiencies of total Cu, total Cr and total Pb from the soil under composite conditions were 36.69%, 52.35% and 19.67%, respectively. The main removal mechanisms included both electromigration and diffusion, where electromigration contributed 74.41%, 31.48% and 97.67% to the removal of total Cu, Cr and Pb, respectively. The removal of composite heavy metals was affected by adsorption-desorption competition and synergism. The competition of Pb for specific adsorption sites in soil leads to the increase of mobility of Cr and Cu, which is conducive to migration and removal. The migration of Cu and Pb ions to the cathode inhibited the diffusion of Cr to the anode; however, it drove the synergistic migration of Pb ions to the cathode. For the heavy metals migrated from the soil into the catholyte, only Cu2+ with high redox potential is reduced to copper at the cathode.

Abstract:Efficient and sustainable technologies for cleaning up of contaminated sediments are under urgent demand. Bioremediation by utilizing the natural metabolic activities of sediment-inhabited microorganisms has been widely accepted as a viable option, but the relatively low efficiency and poor controllability severely limite its application. Here, we bring out the concept that electrochemical approaches may be used as an efficient means to stimulate sediment bioremediation. Although still at the very beginning, benthic microbial fuel cells (BMFC) as a remediation technology show many potential benefits, such as accelerated decontamination, self-sustained operation, relatively easy deployment and control, and environmental benignity. The unique features of BMFC setup and operation also give rise to substantially different challenges compared to conventional MFCs. In this review, we present a critical overview on the characteristics, possible application niches, and state-of-the-art progress of this technology. Especially, the current limitations in respect of system design, electrode selection, microbial control and selection of deployment environment are discussed in details, and the needed future research endeavors to promote its practical application are highlighted.

Abstract:A wide variety of pollutants are discharged into water bodies like lakes, rivers, canal, etc. due to the growing world population, industrial development, depletion of water resources, improper disposal of agricultural and native wastes. Water pollution is becoming a severe problem for the whole world from small villages to big cities. The toxic metals and organic dyes pollutants are considered as significant contaminants that cause severe hazards to human beings and aquatic life. The microbial fuel cell (MFC) is the most promising, eco-friendly, and emerging technique. In this technique, microorganisms play an important role in bioremediation of water pollutants simultaneously generating an electric current. In this review, a new approach based on microbial fuel cells for bioremediation of organic dyes and toxic metals has been summarized. This technique offers an alternative with great potential in the field of wastewater treatment. Finally, their applications are discussed to explore the research gaps for future research direction. From a literature survey of more than 170 recent papers, it is evident that MFCs have demonstrated outstanding removal capabilities for various pollutants.

Abstract:Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is an encouraging and eco-friendly technology, which converts chemical energy stored in biomass into usable electricity. Petroleum refinery wastewater (PRW) is rich in organic contents which is an important parameter for microbial electrolysis promote electron generation within microbial biofilms. Despite various wastewater treatment methods developed, many fall short in terms of cost-effectiveness, energy recovery, and durability. The novelty of this research was to study MFC performance with a bio-electrochemical process provides a cost-effective solution by oxidizing biodegradable organics into electricity and treatment of PRW. Present research emphasizes the potential to generate electricity from PRW, achieving an energy density of 18.03 milliamps (mA) at a chemical oxygen demand (COD) loading of 14,843 mg/L. Results in this study demonstrated the 98.8% COD removal efficiency over 81 days of MFC operation. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) analysis identified the optimal ratio of activated sludge biomass, yielding an anodic current of 1.27 mA and a cathodic potential of − 0.68 mV. This research highlights the promising dual benefits of wastewater treatment and electricity generation through MFC technology.
