Abstract:Leïla Slimani's Chanson douce draws an explicit parallel between its protagonist, Louise, a nanny who eventually kills the children she looks after, and the mythological figure of Medea, specifically Pierre Corneille's version of the Princess of Colchis. This article argues that the analogy between Louise and Medea, rather than restricting Louise to being exclusively monstrous because of the infanticide, highlights the paradoxical dimension of her character. Her monstrosity, in fact, is inseparable from her heroism. We will call upon Aristotle's principles of tragedy as well as Corneille's own theoretical writings — in which the playwright himself explains that his Médée, while a criminal, remains admirable — to show how Louise is able to portray herself as a simultaneously laudable and blameable character by affirming her allegiance to a classical ideal of dignity. The dramaturgical approach of the article shines a new light on the protagonist of this controversial novel, winner of the 2016 Prix Goncourt.

Abstract:Objectives: This essay aims to examine how environments and places are portrayed in a literary work and their translation, drawing attention to how spaces and landscapes are reflected and recreated in this work. The emphasis is on the premise that language, environment, and landscape, which are at the heart of literature, should be translated into certain other linguistic and environmental mediums throughout the translation. Therefore, the main goal of this research is to reveal, through an ecocritical approach, Alem's translators' translational preferences to recreate the ecological and spatial setting she expresses in her novel, The Dove’s Necklace. Additionally, to investigate if these translational preferences aid in enhancing environmental awareness and space image amongst target readers. Methods: This is a descriptive study that employs qualitative approaches. A comprehensive reading of the work is necessary to verify the novel's translations of landscape and bioregion references following Toury's (2012) proposed translational norms. Results: The results show that the translators of the target text have generally benefited from the tendency towards literal translation. In other words, the translators' literal translation method aided in conveying the same environmental image. Consequently, the intended reader becomes aware of an ecological reality that exists outside of their own settings. Conclusions: Scholars do not widely accept literal translations, although they may effectively convey the text and its impact.

Abstract:Abstract This essay is an Algerian-French poet-translator’s personal reflection on the indispensable role that translation has played in his poetic creativity. Emphasizing in particular his bilingual education in the colonial Algerian context, he observes that his translation of poets from English, Arabic, and German into French is thus “doubly foreign” because his French is steeped in his Arabic culture and language. The essay advocates for the peaceful coexistence of any two languages, and especially the postcolonial coexistence of Arabic and French, as one of mutual enrichment. Tengour shows how this inclusive translational approach to Algerian bilinguality informs not only his creative process but also his editorial work, including Diwân ifriqiya, volume 4 of the Poems for the Millennium series from the University of California Press, and Poèmes du monde, a series of poetry in translation from Éditions Apic in Algeria, which has published over twenty poets from at least a dozen countries.

Abstract:Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clezio, 2008 winner of Nobel Prize for Literature, is undoubtedly one of the key figures in the arena of French literature. Of all his publications, Le Proces Verbal, Desert, Ourania, Ritournelle de la faim are the most representative ones. Seen from the themes, his fiction attaches great significance to the interrelations of human beings and human traditions, of human beings and human society, and, in particular, of human beings and Nature. Le Clezio accordingly argues that human beings, once stepping into the real nature, will find their knowledge about society as well as human existence a kind of deviation. It is, according to him, necessary to combine comprehensive knowledge with different means for the understanding of the real world. With respect to the sources where his fictions spring into being, Le Clezio believes that his novels are a mirror of two different worlds. One is the French world and the other is the peripheral world which is different from the mainstream human civilization. His works, therefore, show a profound humanistic concern for marginal civilizations. As regards to the forms of his fictional writing, Le Clezio mildly criticizes the extreme formalism prevailing in the 1960s and 1970s French literature. He, however, holds that the micro ways of narration in Western historical studies and Joycean modernist, methods of representation can be applied to the presentation of the real history and the hidden world of human beings.

Abstract:This tribute to the work and legacy of Belgian filmmaker, writer, and installation artist Chantal Akerman, by a scholar of her work who also knew the filmmaker, is written in short paragraphs beginning with the phrase “I remember,” each recounted memory leading into the next. The format is derived from writer Georges Perec, and the essay connects these artists through their experiences as Holocaust survivors or children of survivors. Touching on Akerman’s Jewish heritage, her early success with the film Jeanne Dielman: 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles (Belgium/France, 1975), and the particularities of films from News from Home (France/Belgium, 1976) to Almayer’s Folly (France/Belgium, 2011), the piece finds Akerman’s memory as much in vivid quotidian images as in her indelible artistic contributions.

Abstract:This study sets out to investigate the concepts of domestication and foreignization introduced by Lawrence Venuti through examining the transfer of culture-bound references in the translation of the novel “Dhakirat al jassad ذاكرة الجسد” (Memory in the Flesh) by the world's best-known Arab woman novelist, Ahlam Mosteghanemi. A translation that was carried out from Arabic into English by the Lebanese journalist and translator Baria Ahmar Sreihn. The protagonists (khaled and Hayat) both come from the capital of Eastern Algeria: Constantine, which is also the author’s hometown. Algeria, as the biggest country in Africa, is home to numerous cultures, dialects and even languages. Constantine is thus considered an Algerian cultural and civilization beacon that has its own culture, habits and customs which the Arab reader can feel through the extensive use of culture-bound references by Mosteghanemi. In addition to that, the reader can also feel the French influence in Mosteghanemi’s style, an influence that can be explained by the fact that the French colonialism stayed in Algeria for over 132 years. We selected 14 occurrences of culture-bound references to be analyzed and criticized from the first chapter of the novel. How did the translator deal with a different culture than hers? How did she render all of the Algerian culture-bound references in English? Were they adapted? Omitted? Or kept as they are? According to Lawrence Venuti, the translator should always choose to foreignize rather than domesticate. On another note, Schleirmacher speaks about two major things from which the translator chooses: “He either leaves the writer in peace as much as possible and moves the reader toward him; or he leaves the reader in peace as much as possible and moves the writer toward him.” We therefore put forth the hypothesis that the translator domesticated all of the culture-bound references in order to “move the writer (and her culture) toward the reader”.

Abstract:This essay examines the ways in which French director Céline Sciamma subverts the hierarchical trope of the artist and the muse through a queering of power dynamics in her 2019 historical-drama film Portrait de la jeune fille en feu . Drawing on the work of philosophers Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Byung-Chul Han to analyse the functions of “otherness” and “sameness” in dynamics of erotic desire and aesthetic pleasure in viewing, this essay posits that Portrait , through its purposefully ambiguous ending and radical reworking of the hierarchies of viewing, disrupts dominant assumptions of both gender and subjectivity to call instead for fluidity and potential in power dynamics between artists and muses, and viewer and screen.

Abstract:This essay engages Agnès Varda’s Le Bonheur with the intellectual and sociocultural history of love and sexuality in Europe. The film’s philosophical exploration of the concept of the replaceable beloved posits Varda as a contributing voice to the longstanding discourse about the nature of love. Varda offers two frameworks for understanding the replaceable beloved. The first is that the replaceable beloved is a mechanism serving nature’s will to procreate and survive, an idea which has precedence with Arthur Schopenhauer’s ‘will to live.’ Secondly, the replaceable beloved is a phenomenon of consumer and media-driven culture in the postwar era, in which people, like objects, are dispensable and easily replaced. In her film and interviews, Varda conveys attitudes of both critique and acceptance toward the concept of the replaceable beloved. This continuous dialectic is essential to her dual objectives of unsettling viewers’ predetermined moral paradigms and invoking discussion and debate.

Abstract:By analyzing Grass's The Snail's Diary together with the comments he made concerning Durer's famous copperplates, this paper will look into the contrastive human and animal images in the book and explore the writer's consistent stance in his writings. I will argue that the snail stands for a wanderer caught between melancholia and utopia, who, while questioning idealism and hope, refuses to give up his explorative writing career. Understanding his stance against resignation and abandonment to hedonism or fanaticism is one of the prerequisites for comprehending his later narrative works.

D.) and Cixous (H. C.) write (self-)portraits of themselves as other in their fictional encounters, one of whose central restagings is the inaugural, asymmetrical first-time meeting "face to back" (H. C. seeing J. D. with his back turned, not seeing her). Working through convoluted threads of linguistic play in French involving seeing (or blindness) [voir], knowing [savoir], (not) having [avoir] and being, the Jew as foreign or other being [autre, être] "to the letter" [lettre], etc., this study analyzes how these textual portraits can be framed within, or read against, a broad philosophical tradition (Descartes, Hegel) linking them to withdrawal [retrait] of being and of themselves as impossible gifts for the other in substitution.

Abstract:Memory Studies, Ahead of Print. The title Le silence de la mer evokes a constellation of memories within the complex and intertwined traumas of war, occupation, and genocide in 1940s' France. This article argues that Melville's 1949 film adaptation of this story formulates a new mode of ethical memory by mobilizing fictional first-person filmic narration to foreground the subject's responsibility for the suffering other. To analyze the intersection of fiction and memory within the framework of testimony, I fuse together Hirsch's notion of affiliative postmemory with the philosophy of Levinas to form a conception of testimony by proximity. By bringing suffering to the screen in such a way, this film implies a personal responsibility that extends beyond the film and its authors to the spectators' experience through its engagement with collective memory. Its spectators are responsible to bear witness, while maintaining that any response is always already inadequate, and thus the responsibility is ultimately unfulfillable.

"Le Jardin d’Allah": Ecological Sensibilities in the Francophone Caribbean

Abstract:When gardening and Caribbean islands are mentioned, one cannot but think of Jamaica Kincaid and of the way in which she has articulated the complex relationship between colonialism and gardens, between people and notions such as place and situatedness. The very idea of nature in the Caribbean is strongly connoted, bearing the brunt of age-old associations with exoticism, mystery, unpredictability, or even madness. The symbolic meanings gardens take on in this region are therefore numerous and multifaceted, and if some have been lengthily discussed, others might still be worth exploring. Such is the case of backyards and vegetable gardens in Maryse Condé’s En Attendant la Montée des Eaux: in a violence-torn, poverty-afflicted, and politically unstable Haiti, the orphaned Movar makes people’s lives more bearable by recreating beauty around them, and by giving order to their unruly surroundings. His actions are more than a simple imposition of man over nature, they are also a metaphoric restoration of a lost balance, long forgotten because of other men’s blind exploitation of both human and natural resources in an environment rendered all the more fragile by its fluctuating weather patterns. This paper presents some considerations on Caribbean soil ecologies, with a particular focus on Guadeloupe and Haiti, and on the ways in which the gardener-garden relationship might contribute to restoring damaged ecosystems. Through the character of Movar and the Jardin d’Allah he tends to, concepts such as care time, reciprocal gardening and plant agency are explored. The precarious contexts in which acts of gardening take place allow for the words of Maryse Condé to be read as a paradigm for finding rootedness and balance in a politically, socially, and ecologically suffering world. Finally, Movar’s story is translated on a global scale, as an effective model of social sustainability and responsibility.

Abstract:Abstract The aim of this article is to analyze the issue of trauma and literature in the context of the Algerian war, as presented in two novels by Algerian writers who use French in a multicultural way: Un regard blessé [Shattered vision] by Rabah Belamri and La Malédiction by Rachid Mimouni [the Malediction]. It will answer the following question:is it possible to see in the francophone Literature a tendency to de-structure the text in order to make it possible for a new plurality to emerge? Literature re-members culture as it points out the dark side of the Algerian history, it makes the readers understand the current situation and the heritage of the past.

Abstract:Dans ce travail, je m'interesse au role et a la popularite contemporaine du chat, a travers, notamment, de l'exemple de deux cat cafes montrealais, et dans l'histoire qui precede son statut actuel. J'explore les ressemblances et les differences qui existent entre les figures felines du passe, et le chat du cat cafe moderne. Ce memoire est ainsi divise en deux parties distinctes, qui ont fait appel a deux types de methodologie differents. Dans un premier temps, j'ai fait une recherche documentaire sur les differentes representations du chat, pour pouvoir presenter les bases pour une mythanalyse de ce symbole. Dans la premiere partie de ce memoire je documente ainsi l'histoire des representations symbolique de cet animal, des debuts de la domestication, jusqu'a aujourd'hui, en focalisant sur deux themes principaux : « la guerison » et « la domesticite». Vu que mon objet central est le cat cafe, je m'interesse a la region mediterraneenne, l'origine du chat domestique, et a l'Asie, ou est ne le phenomene du cat cafe. Pour la deuxieme composante de ma recherche, j'ai effectue une recherche de terrain dans les deux premiers cat cafe en Amerique du Nord, le Cafe des Chats et le Cafe Chat l'Heureux, tous deux situes a Montreal. Dans la deuxieme partie de mon memoire, je presente une ethnographie de ces lieux, base sur les resultats d'observations; de discussions formelles et informelles avec de nombreux clients et employes des cafes; d'une centaine de questionnaires; et de plusieurs entretiens formels avec quelques clients reguliers du cafe et les proprietaires. En la combinant avec ma recherche documentaire, cette ethnographie cherche a definir les elements essentiels qui caracterisent le phenomene contemporain du cat cafe. Abstract:L’audiodescription (AD) est un service d’assistance artistique et médiatique en plein essor « qui rend les produits audiovisuels accessibles et agréables pour le public aveugle et les personnes malvoyantes en transférant des images et des sons flous dans une narration verbale qui interagit avec les dialogues et les sons du texte original avec lequel elle forme un tout cohérent » (Reviers et Vercauteren 2013 dans Vercauteren 2016 : 11). Comme objet d’étude et comme pratique intersémiotique, intersémiosphérique ou intermodale, l’audiodescription est devenue un domaine d’intérêt majeur non seulement en traduction audiovisuelle, mais aussi en traductologie (Taylor et Perego 2022). Cet intérêt va de pair avec les développements technologiques dans l’industrie de la traduction qui reflètent quelques tendances mondiales, parmi lesquelles l’augmentation du besoin de localisation (traduction) audiovisuelle (Bussey 2019 : en ligne). Dans cet article, nous présentons et analysons notre propre performance, en tant qu’étudiante au Master Traduction Audiovisuelle : Localisation, Sous-titrage et Doublage (ISTRAD, Instituto Superior de Estudios Lingüísticos y Traducción, et Université de Cadix) (promotion 2020-2022), de l’audiodescription du film d’animation Pour la France, un film de fin d’études en animation 2D, à thématique historique, réalisé en 2019 par Vincent Chansard, dans le cadre de la formation « Concepteur et réalisateur de films d’animation » de Gobelins, école de l’image. Après avoir défini notre cadre théorique, nous exposons notre méthodologie basée sur les principales étapes de réalisation de ce mode de traduction qu’est l’audiodescription, en mettant en relief les différents défis que nous avons rencontrés et les solutions que nous avons apportées.

Abstract:The Algerian hedgehog, which is an endemic Mediterranean species, is a nocturnal and terrestrial insectivorous mammal. Atelerix algirus ’ populations are widespread in various habitats comprising human agglomeration, such as rural, suburban or natural ecosystems. However, the impact of the habitat’s characteristics on its diet remains unknown in Algeria. To contribute to a better understanding of this question, we have analysed 158 faeces samples of the Algerian hedgehog in three different areas: urban, suburban and natural area. The findings show that the Algerian hedgehog is an opportunistic species. It feeds on several classes of Arthropoda, but the harvester ant Messor barbarus dominates largely its menu with AR = 74.81% in the diverse habitats. Furthermore, the HAC and FCA analyses confirm the positive impact of the level of urbanisation and the anthropogenic activity on the Algerian hedgehog prey richness in the north of Algeria (79 prey species and 5574 individuals ingested in the urban area, compared to 64 prey species and 3188 individuals ingested in the natural zone).
