Abstract:Significance Hundreds of people protested in Cairo, Alexandria, Suez and El-Mahalla El-Kubra, prompted by a former construction contractor for the military, Mohammed Ali, who has been posting videos online throughout September accusing the government and the military of corruption and wasting public money on luxury projects. The videos have resonated in a country where the poverty rate has risen to 32.5%, from 27.8% in 2015, according to a survey that the official statistical agency, CAPMAS, released in July. Impacts Egypt's IMF-backed policies are failing to improve the economic situation of the majority of the population. The government may introduce further programmes aimed at poverty alleviation. Egypt’s economic strategy will continue to be driven by mega-projects that are financed largely by debt and have limited economic benefits.
