Abstract:Interest in natural plant products has increased due to the realization of their importance for animal and human health; Medicago species, such as Medicago truncatula produce native compounds with wide applications. For example, saponins, an important group of bioactive plant natural products, are glycosides of diterpenoid or steroidal aglycones. Saponins display multiple biological activities, including those conferring potential health benefits to humans. Triterpenoid saponins are widely found in the Leguminosae and their biological activities can positively and negatively impact plant growth. The Medicago saponins have potential health benefits for humans and saponin containing plants have been long used in traditional medicine and more studies have illustrated anticholesterolemic and anticancer activities. Some of the steps in the biosynthesis of triterpene saponins uncharacterized at the molecular level and therefore functional genomics studies established for M. truncatula as a model species should provide useful tools and approaches to solve this problem.
