Abstract:The clean-up of viscous crude-oil spills is a global challenge. Hydrophobic and oleophilic oil sorbents have been demonstrated as promising candidates for oil-spill remediation. However, the sorption speeds of these oil sorbents for viscous crude oil are rather limited. Herein we report a Joule-heated graphene-wrapped sponge (GWS) to clean-up viscous crude oil at a high sorption speed. The Joule heat of the GWS reduced in situ the viscosity of the crude oil, which prominently increased the oil-diffusion coefficient in the pores of the GWS and thus speeded up the oil-sorption rate. The oil-sorption time was reduced by 94.6% compared with that of non-heated GWS. Besides, the oil-recovery speed was increased because of the viscosity decrease of crude oil. This in situ Joule self-heated sorbent design will promote the practical application of hydrophobic and oleophilic oil sorbents in the clean-up of viscous crude-oil spills.

Abstract:Graphene/polyester staple sponge (GPSS) is a high-performance adsorbent for the cleanup of crude oil spill, but the use of hydrazine hydrate as the reducing agent for the preparation of GPSS is not friendly to the environment. Herein, we reported that graphene oxide/polyester staple composite could be hydrothermally reduced by bioresource glucose to prepare GPSS of similar performance. GPSS could be applied in the absorption of oils and organic solvents thanks to its large pore volume and hydrophobicity. The absorption capacity of the novel glucose-reduced GPSS was competitive to those of the most effective absorbents for oil spill cleanup. The used GPSS could be easily regenerated by soaking in ethanol to remove the absorbed oil. The green synthesis, high oil absorption performance and easy recycling of the glucose-reduced GPSS make it a good candidate for cleaning oil spills.

Abstract:The rapid cleanup of heavy crude oil spills is challenging due to the poor mobility of highly viscous oil. Traditional absorption strategies involve heating oils to a relatively high temperature to reduce their viscosity, but this method is expensive. Herein, a solar-heated reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-wrapped melamine sponge (MS) was proposed to rapidly absorb oil. The prepared rGO-MS exhibited good hydrophobicity and oleophilicity and could be used for the rapid cleanup of oil spills from water. In addition, the excellent photothermal conversion effect of rGO enabled the rGO-MS composite to achieve a solar energy absorption efficiency of 91%. Due to the localized solar energy collection and wetting properties of rGO-MS, viscous oil near the contact region was effectively heated, enabling rapid heavy oil recovery under solar light illumination. This proposed solar heating-assisted viscous oil sorbent has great promise for use in heavy oil spill cleanups in the future.
Easy Synthesis of Light-weight Hierarchical Mesoporous Carbon Sponges for Efficient Oil Spill Recovery

Abstract:The clean-up of spilled viscous crude oil has increasingly become a global challenge. Since the rather limited sorption speed restricted the use of traditional oil sorbents materials in practical oil-spill remediation, people gradually pay more attention to the nanoporous materials and technology to clean-up viscous crude oil by turning the rheology though Joule-heating. Herein, we report a quite easy synthesis method to prepare light-weight nanoporous carbon sponges by using the cheap environmentally friendly melamine foam, a widely used and mass disposal building material with high porosity of over 99%, as the template and carbon source. SEM images show that the natural 100 um level porous network structure of melamine foam retained after the carbonized carbon sponge material. Nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms as well as the corresponding pore size distribution results clearly indicating the unique hierarchical mesoporous features of the as-developed carbon sponge, which is good for its contract with the spill oil. XRD and Raman spectra verified the partial graphitization characteristics of the mesoporous carbon sponges, FT-IR and XPS spectra confirmed the presence of N and O containing functional groups. The Joule-heating performance in a simulated oil spill case under sunlight show that the obtained mesoporous carbon sponges superior than supported graphene control (MF-G) on the heating and rheological regulation effect, thus is an excellent candidate for oil spill recovery. The synthetically balanced physicochemical characteristics and additional merits such as low cost, enriched oxygen-containing functional groups, good bulk electrical conductivities and robustness make this carbon sponge material a good platform for the development of various advanced multifunctional materials for oil spill recovery.
Novel Magnetically Driven Superhydrophobic Sponges Coated with Asphaltene/Kaolin Nanoparticles for Effective Oil Spill Cleanup

Abstract:Fast and effective cleanup of oil spills remains a global challenge. A modified commercial sponge with superhydrophobicity, strong absorption capacity, outstanding magnetic response, and fire resistance were fabricated by a facile and inexpensive route of dip-coated melamine sponge carbonization. The low-cost petroleum asphaltene and kaolin nanoparticles were used as the dip-coating reagent. High absorption capacity of the fabricated sponges allowed rapid and continuous removal of oil contaminants. Taking advantage of the good refractory property, the sponges can be used in burning conditions and directly reused after burning out of the absorbed oil. Reusability tests showed that the modified sponges still maintained high absorption capacity (>85%) after six regeneration and reuse cycles. These characteristics make the fabricated sponge a promising aid to promote effective in situ burning cleanup of oil spills, contributing as a magnetic oil collector and a fire-resistant flexible boom. An example usage scenario of the sponges applied to in situ burning cleanup of oil spills is described.
A Novel Graphite-Based Sorbent for Oil Spill Cleanup

Abstract:The performance of an innovative material based on expanded graphite, Grafysorber® G+ (Directa Plus), has been tested through laboratory, tank, and confinement tests for oil removal in case of an oil spill and water treatment. In addition to the ability to retain oil, the possibility of reusing this material after regeneration via squeezing was also evaluated. As a comparison, the same experimental tests were conducted using polypropylene flakes (PP), the material currently most used to deal with spill accidents. Oils with different chemical and physical properties were used, namely kerosene, diesel, and crude oil. From the laboratory tests, the capacity of Grafysorber® G+ to retain oil was found to be directly proportional to the viscosity of the latter, with adsorption values ranging from 76.8 g/g for diesel to 50.8 g/g for kerosene, confirming the potential of the innovative material compared to the PP. Cyclical use tests have confirmed certain reusability of the material, even if its adsorbent capacity decreases significantly after the first cycle and continues to decrease in subsequent cycles, but a less marked manner. Finally, some considerations based on the adsorption capacities were found to suggest that the adoption of the new material is also economically preferable, resulting in savings of 20 to 40% per kg of hydrocarbon treated.

Abstract:Accidental crude oil spills over a large water surface can wreck environmental and economic havoc. To mitigate such disasters, timely intervention to contain and recover oil before it spreads is critical. Standard lipophilic sorbents do not work because crude oil is too viscous to flow into them, especially in cold weather. This has led to the proposal of using graphene foam, also an excellent lipophilic sorbent, since it is a conductor and can be electrically heated, thus rendering the crude fluid enough to absorb. Yet wiring, powering and electrically heating any mass over a large area in high seas is clearly a challenge. Here we present a solution using a solar-activated graphene tile: within seconds upon exposure to daylight, it heats up and absorbs, eventually filling crude oil into 74 % of its own volume. It may be further coated by a lipophilic oil-permeating thermal insulation to become a light-absorbing, heat-retaining and oil- absorbing black hole. Capable of withstanding high heat up to 600 degrees C, tiles can be rejuvenated by ridding themselves of adsorbed oil in self-combustion, allowing even a small supply of tiles to last and contain oil spill for some time. The reusable tile is made by pyrolyzing a poly(vinylidene chloride) foam of an identical size and shape, obtaining a density of 16 kg m(-3) and a strength of 11.7 kPa. Upon emergency, tiles initially installed as ultralight load-supporting constructs on oil-production platforms and crude- transport vessels become immediately available for repeated oil absorbing at 41 times their own weight. Abstract:Superhydrophobicity and high elasticity are the two key properties of oil-absorption porous materials. The hydrophobic graphene/carbon black coating on the skeleton of a melamine sponge facilitated the surface to form the micro/nanoscale roughness. The resulting sponge thus was superhydrophobic. Moreover, it inherited the extremely high elasticity of raw melamine sponge, which showed no plastic deformation even after 1000 compression/relaxing cycles. To our knowledge, this was the first superhydrophobic graphene-based porous monolith with such a high elasticity. Its absorbed oils could be recycled by simple squeezing and it was also regenerated by squeezing because of the high elasticity. In addition, it showed a high absorption capacity for common oil contaminations and its fabrication was facile. Therefore, it is really an excellent absorbent for the practical absorption of oil contaminations from water.

Abstract:The vast demand for petroleum industry products led to the increased production of oily wastewaters and has led to many possible separation technologies. In addition to production-related oily wastewater, direct oil spills are associated with detrimental effects on the local ecosystems. Accordingly, this review paper aims to tackle the oil spill cleanup issue as well as water separation by providing a wide range of graphene-based technologies. These include graphene-based membranes; graphene sponges; graphene-decorated meshes; graphene hydrogels; graphene aerogels; graphene foam; and graphene-coated cotton. Sponges and aerogels modified by graphene and reduced graphene oxide demonstrated effective oil water separation owing to their superhydrophobic/superoleophilic properties. In addition, oil particles are intercepted while allowing water molecules to penetrate the graphene-oxide-coated metal meshes and membranes thanks to their superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic properties. Finally, we offer future perspectives on oil water separation that are hindering the advancements of such technologies and their large-scale applications.

Abstract:On page 3890, amphiphilic porous particles encapsulated with spongy graphene are generated by Y. Zhao, Z. Gu, and co-workers from a microfluidic device and used as adsorbents for water treatment. The amphiphilic surface characteristics result from hydrophobic graphene cores and hydrophilic shells and, together with the porous structure, ensure that the particles have the ability to absorb oils that are either floating on the water or under water. Once contacted, yellow oil droplets can be absorbed into the external/interconnected hydrophobic graphene cores spontaneously.

Abstract:One of the most pervasive environmental issues is the frequent oil spills that happen during oil production and transportation processes. This global challenge calls for emerging materials that can effectively separate oil pollutants from water. Here, a facile and feasible method to fabricate a high-performance oil absorbent (ODA-rGO@MF) through the coating of octadecylamine-grafted reduced graphene oxide (ODA-rGO) on the skeleton of commercial melamine foam (MF) is reported. The resultant foam not only possesses the hierarchical pore structure, superior compressibility, and mechanical stability of the original foam but also exhibits high water repellency, superhydrophobicity, and durability under harsh conditions, such as in strongly acidic (alkaline) and salty solutions. The superhydrophobicity of ODA-rGO@MF was created by employing the microarchitecture of MF, forming the rough rGO nanoscale wrinkles on the foam skeletons and further reducing the surface energy by octadecylamine (ODA). These fascinating characteristics make the functionalized foam an excellent oil absorbent with a high absorption capacity (44-111 times its own weight) and extraordinary recyclability. More importantly, the inexpensive materials and low-cost fabrication technique make it possible for large-scale production. Thus, the as-prepared foam has the potential to be used as a promising absorbent for oil-spill cleanups.

Abstract:Abstract Water pollution is a global environmental problem that has attracted great concern, and functional carbon nanomaterials are widely used in water treatment. Here, to optimize the removal performance of both oil/organic matter and dye molecules, we fabricated porous and hydrophobic core–shell sponges by growing graphene on three-dimensional stacked copper nanowires. The interconnected pores between the one-dimensional nanocore–shells construct the porous channels within the sponge, and the multilayered graphene shells equip the sponge with a water contact angle over 120° even under acidic and alkaline environments, which enables fast and efficient cleanup of oil on or under the water. The core–shell sponge can absorb oil or organic solvents with densities 40–90 times its own, and its oil-sorption capacity is much larger than those of other porous materials like activated carbon and loofah. On the other hand, the adsorption behavior of the core–shell sponge to dyes including methyl orange (MO) and malachite green (MG), also common water pollutants, was also measured. Dynamic adsorption of MG under cyclic compression demonstrated a higher adsorption rate than that in the static state, and an acidic environment was favorable for the adsorption of MO molecules. Finally, the adsorption isotherm for MO molecules was analyzed and fitted with the Langmuir model, and the adsorption kinetics were studied in depth as well.

Abstract:Fast and efficient cleanup of high-viscosity oil spills on the sea is still a global challenge today. Traditional recycling methods are either energy demanding or inefficient. Hydrophobic/oleophilic sorbents are promising candidates to handle oil spills, but they have limited ability to recover high viscosity oil. In this work, we report a superhydrophobic/oleophilic carbon nanotubes (CNT) and polypyrrole (PPy) coated melamine sponge (m-CNT/). The CNT/PPy coating enables the sponge to convert light and electricity to heat, ensuring that the absorbent can adapt to various working environments. The rapid heat generation on the sponge surface can significantly reduce the viscosity of crude oil and accelerate the absorption rate, thereby achieving the purpose of rapid recovery of oil spills. Under one sun illumination (1.0 kW/m2) and an applied voltage (8 V), the surface temperature of the m-CNT/ can reach 118.6 °C. The complete penetration time of oil droplets is 93.5% less than that of an unheated sponge. In addition, under half sun irradiation intensity and 11 V, the porous sponge absorbed 6.92 kg/m2 of crude oil in the first minute, which is about 31 times as much as that of an unheated sponge. Finally, we demonstrate a continuous absorption system, consisting of a self-heating m-CNT/ and peristaltic pump, that can continuously recover oil spills on the sea surface. In view of its unique design, lower cost and fast oil absorption speed, this work provides a new option to tackle large-scale oil spill disasters on the sea surface.

Abstract:Three-dimensional graphene based materials with superhydrophobic/superoleophilic attributes are highly desirable for water treatment. The graphene aerogel (GA) was prepared by hydrothermal reaction of the graphene oxide (GO) solution in the presence of dopamine followed by freeze-drying. The subsequent surface modification of GA using fluoroalkylsilane occurred by a vapor-liquid deposition process. The superhydrophobic graphene aerogel (SGA) fabricated from GA exhibits superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity with the water contact angle of 156.5° and the oil contact angle of 0°. With this property, SGA could selectively adsorb various types of oils/organic solvents from the oil-water mixture. Moreover, the SGA possesses excellent low bulk density (9.6 mg cm-3), high absorption capacity (110-230 fold weight gain), and superior adsorption recyclability. With all these desirable features, the SGA is a promising candidate for oil-polluted water remediation.

Abstract:Carbon soot (CS) has the advantages of cost-effectiveness and production scalability over other carbons (i.e., graphene, CNTs) in their synthesis. However, little research has been conducted to explore the potential applications of CS. In this study, we demonstrated that a.common daily waste-CS-can be used for developing a cost-effective absorbent (CS-sponge) to remove oil contaminants from water. The CS was synthesized by an ethylene-oxygen combustion flame. The CS-sponge was prepared via a dip-coating method. Without further surface modification and pretreatments, the CS-sponge demonstrates high absorption capacities (up to 80 times its own weight) for a broad spectrum of oils and organic solvents with a recyclability of more than 10 times. These research results show evidence that the CS-sponge is promising in environmental remediation for large-scale, low-cost removal of oils from water.
Gold nanoparticles modified graphene foam with superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity for oil-water separation

Abstract:Leakage accidents often occur during the production, transportation, and use of petroleum products, which is a common and serious environmental issue. It is of great significance and challenge to develop efficient materials for oil-water separation. This article introduces a simple and feasible method to prepare high-performance 3D graphene foam (GF) oil-absorbing material. Gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) are loaded on the surface of graphene foam by ion sputtering and then modified with 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluorodecanethiol (PFDT). The prepared graphene sponge is porous with a large specific surface area and excellent water repellency (water contact angle exceeding 150°). The superhydrophobicity of the materials is due to the interaction between the rough structure of gold nanoparticles and the reduction of surface energy by PFDT. These outstanding properties make the functionalized graphene foam have excellent oil absorption capacity, which can even be as high as 25.8 g/g, and it can still maintain high separation performance after 10 cycles of recycling. It is worth noting that the preparation of the material is simple and reusable. Therefore, the prepared graphene foam has the potential as a promising absorbent for oil spill purification.

Abstract:Graphenic sponges have created tantamount interest due to their special affinity for absorbing a broad range of petroleum oils and solvents resulting from controllable surface wettability. A major challenge is to fabricate such materials with surface hydrophilicity coexisting with hydrophobicity. Herein, we report a scalable self-assembly of randomly oriented improved graphene oxide (IGO) sheets into a graphene oxide sponge (GOS-H) with uniform cylindrical shape via a hydrothermal method. Extensive characterization of GOS-H using Raman microspectroscopy, Raman imaging, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and electron microscopic (SEM and HRTEM) techniques suggests the sponge surface is hydrophobic with some hydrophilic oxygen content and has defect sites and roughness associated with voids formation. These features and conformal C–O coating on the basal plans result in high-diesel-range alkanes absorption from pure alkanes as well as from alkane–water mixture, which could enable as-synthesized GOS-H as an efficient and inexpensive sponge for hydrocarbons cleaning from contaminated water. In addition, GOS-H exhibits high catalytic activity for C–C coupling reaction of biomass-derived furfural and 2-methylfuran under solventless conditions to produce jet fuel-ranged high-carbon oxygenates with a branched backbone.

We here report a novel hierarchical carbon architecture featuring zero-dimentional carbon dots assembled on reduced graphene oxide nanosheets upon commercial sponge. It exhibits extraordinary sorption capacity of 97.4 g/g and provides a highly modular photothermal and electrothermal conversion platform for rapidly heating crude oils with the minimum heat losses, enabling efficient adsorption of crude oils. Thanks to its excellent energy management ability, the energy efficiency for solar to crude oil adsorption reaches to 248 % with the aid of proper input voltage. Besides, the crude oil value recycled in one hour is 3.15 ∼ 4.43 times than the cost of materials. Therefore, this work offers a new material architecting system for addressing catastrophic large-area spills of crude oils.
