Abstract:Stretchable wearable devices with various functions are being continuously developed. However, the problem of how to connect rigid electronics to stretchable circuits has not been properly solved. In this study, we use stretchable conductive adhesives to realize stretchable connections between electronics and circuits, so that the overall reliability of stretchable wearable devices can be strengthened. The adhesives are based on metal-polymer conductors where polydimethylsiloxane is used as an elastomer matrix, while liquid metals form electrically conductive networks collectively with carbon nanotubes. The composites show superior adaptability to stretchable wearable devices due to excellent stretchability (maximum tensile strain: 40%) and stability of electrical conductivity in deformation (<math>Δ</math>R/R < 16% at maximum tensile strain), which goes beyond existing conductive adhesives, and can satisfy the requirements of most applications. A stretchable light emitting diode screen is fabricated using the stretchable conductive adhesives and exhibits good performance under cyclic deformations.

Abstract:Flexible electronic devices have penetrated into a variety of industry sectors (i.e., consumer electronics, automotive, and medical) in human life, and this calls for better properties of stretchable conductive composites as the crucial elements. Traditionally, conductive inorganic fillers are incorporated in flexible polymers to prepare conductive composites, which falls short of the required properties in more demanding devices nowadays due to limited deformation, low conductivity, and poor processability. Herein, liquid metals were successfully incorporated in microporous polymer matrixes using a simple codissolving and film casting/solvent evaporation approach. The microporous liquid metal-embedded polymer (LMEP) was insulative as fabricated due to discontinuous liquid metals (LMs), while it became conductive upon stretching. Interestingly, the LMEP films showed a reversible insulator-conductor transition due to the regenerated pores in polymer matrix under organic vapor. Negligible changes in the resistance value were seen even after 50 solvent exposure-tensile strain cycles, demonstrating the excellent stability of the electrical properties of these films. Furthermore, most of the commercially available soluble polymers including rigid plastics and soft elastomers are suitable for the fabrication of LMEP. With the ideal characteristics, they have been successfully exploited in model alarm systems to prevent temperature overloads and solvent leakage, showcasing the great potential in next generation sensors used in industry settings.

Abstract:Stretchable and highly conductive elastomers with intrinsically deformable liquid metal (LM) fillers exhibit promising potential in soft electronics, wearables, human-machine interfaces, and soft robotics. However, conventional LM-elastomer (LME) conductors require a high loading ratio of LM and the post-sintering to rupture LM particles to achieve electric conductivity, which results in high LM consumption and process complexity. In this work, we presented a straightforward and post-sintering-free method that utilizes magnetic aggregation to fabricate stretchable LME conductors. This was achieved by dispersing LM ferrofluid into the elastomer precursor, followed by applying the magnetic field to induce the aggregation and interconnection of the LM ferrofluid particles to form conductive pathways. This method not only simplifies the preparation of initially conductive LME but also reduces the LM loading ratio. The resulting conductive LME composites show high stretchability (up to 650% strain), high conductance stability, and magnetic responsiveness. The stretchable LME conductors were demonstrated in various applications, including the creation of flexible microcircuits, a magnetically controlled soft switch, and a soft hydrogel actuator for grasping tasks. We believe the stretchable LME conductors may find wide applications in electronic skins, soft sensors, and soft machines.

Abstract:Intrinsically stretchable conductors play key roles in the dynamic interfacing of electronic devices with soft human tissues. However, it is difficult to simultaneously achieve high electrical conductivity and mechanical stretchability. Here, we prepared highly stretchable and conductive thin film electrodes by combining PEDOT:PSS and a mutually plasticized polymer dopant. Notably, harsh acid treatment for conductivity enhancement was avoided, and good solvent tolerance and high optical transparency were realized, all of which are essential to device fabrication. We further developed a transparent electrochromic display that can bear stretching up to 80% strain, demonstrating its promising application in next‐generation optoelectronics. Abstract:As an intrinsically stretchable material for flexible electronics construction, liquid metal (LM) based composite conductor faces the challenge to achieve a high conductivity with minimum resistance increase due to the large dimensional change and poor wettability over large tensile strain. To address this issue, a super-stretchable eutectic gallium indium (EGaIn) foamed elastomer composite is prepared with assistance of sugar template and O2 plasma treatment, which displays marginal resistance change by only ~31.3% under a large strain of 500% due to the reorientation and elongation of the conductive network. The EGaIn conductor exhibits superior virtues of a high uptake of LM and conductivity-enhancement feature from ~2.38×10^4 (0% strain) to ~2.97×10^5 S/m (500% strain) due to the strong capillarity force during stretching. This work is a significant step toward the high-performance stretchable conductor, demonstrating a great potential in multifunctional devices development including self-powered nanogenerator, electromagnetic interface (EMI) shielding, and thermal regulator.

Abstract:Highly stretchable, conductive, biocompatible conductors, and connectors are crucial for the fabrication of flexible devices. However, it remains a problem to get highly stretchable, conductive materials with low cost on a large scale. Another problem in production is the connection between soft and rigid components. Here, a new conductive nanocomposite is reported by mixing the 11‐mercaptoundecanoic acid (MUA) modified liquid metal (LM) nanoparticles with polystyrene‐block‐polybutadiene‐block‐polystyrene (SBS), which is biocompatible (in vivo and in vitro), conductive (12 000 S cm−1 of conductivity), and stretchable (800% of elongation). Apart from its good performance, this material can be produced on a large scale by using a commercial polymer product and a straightforward physical production process. MUA is used to compromise the dense "gallium oxide shell" of liquid metal nanoparticles such that the whole composite can become conductive. By using resin to modify this composite, this new conductive material can be adhesive and highly conductive, and serve as a stable and efficient connector between soft conductor and rigid component.

Abstract:Stretchable conductors are the basic units of advanced flexible electronic devices, such as skin‐like sensors, stretchable batteries and soft actuators. Current fabrication strategies are mainly focused on the stretchability of the conductor with less emphasis on the huge mismatch of the conductive material and polymeric substrate, which results in stability issues during long‐term use. Thermal‐radiation‐assisted metal encapsulation is reported to construct an interlocking layer between polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and gold by employing a semipolymerized PDMS substrate to encapsulate the gold clusters/atoms during thermal deposition. The stability of the stretchable conductor is significantly enhanced based on the interlocking effect of metal and polymer, with high interfacial adhesion (>2 MPa) and cyclic stability (>10 000 cycles). Also, the conductor exhibits superior properties such as high stretchability (>130%) and large active surface area (>5:1 effective surface area/geometrical area). It is noted that this method can be easily used to fabricate such a stretchable conductor in a wafer‐scale format through a one‐step process. As a proof of concept, both long‐term implantation in an animal model to monitor intramuscular electric signals and on human skin for detection of biosignals are demonstrated. This design approach brings about a new perspective on the exploration of stretchable conductors for biomedical applications.

Abstract:Liquid metal confined in the elastomer represents an ideal platform for stretchable electronics with ultimate deformability. To enable facile and scalable patterning of conductive features, bulk liquid metal is typically dispersed into fine particles to formulate printable inks. The presence of native oxide or organic ligands stabilizing these liquid metal particles unfortunately inhibits their direct coalescence to recover the metallic conductivity and liquid-state deformability. Here, we report a chemical sintering process that converts printed liquid metal microparticles into a highly deformable conductor. The process involves the removal of surface passivating oxide by a short exposure to acid fume and subsequent selective wetting of liquid metal microparticles onto copper nanoplates present in the ink formulation. The chemical reaction provides the basis for a facile and scalable procedure to print conductive features over a large area with exceptional conductivity (>104 S cm-1) and ultrahigh stretchability (∼1000% strain). Their practical suitability is demonstrated by the fabrication of an ultrastretchable ribbon cable and an epidermal heater.
A facile and scalable patterning approach for ultrastretchable liquid metal features

Abstract:Liquid metals represent an attractive class of compliant conductors featuring metallic conductivity and inherent deformability. The widespread implementation of liquid metal conductors in stretchable electronics is currently hindered by the lack of a facile patterning approach. In this study, we introduce a facile and scalable patterning approach to create liquid metal features on an elastomer substrate. A screen-printed Ag nanoflake pattern is employed as a template for the subsequent selective coating of a liquid metal layer. The as-prepared liquid metal conductors show a bulk-level conductivity of similar to 2.7 x 10(4) S cm(-1), an ultrahigh stretchability of up to 700% tensile strain, and excellent electromechanical durability. The practical suitability is demonstrated by the successful fabrication of an ultradeformable ribbon cable and a smart sensing glove. The efficient and economical access to ultrastretchable liquid metal features may open up a broad range of emerging applications in soft electronic devices and systems.
Evaporation‐Induced Closely‐Packing of Core–Shell PDMS@Ag Microspheres Enabled Stretchable Conductor with Ultra‐High Conductance

Abstract:Core–shelled PDMS@Ag microspheres are synthesized and tightly assembled into 3D conductive architecture by judiciously using evaporation‐induced capillary effect. The resultant stretchable conductor with closely‐packed conductive paths achieves ultra‐high initial conductivity up to 67185 S cm−1 at significantly suppressed conductive filling (19.5 wt.%) and highly maintained conductance at large deformation (820 S cm−1 at 400%). Stretchable conductors are indispensable building blocks for stretchable electronic devices that are used in next‐generation wearable electronics, on‐skin electronics, and soft robotics. Whereas, the ability to realize synergy high conductance and sufficient conductivity under high strain remains challenging. Herein, a stretchable conductor made from tightly assembled core–shell polydimethylsiloxane@silver microspheres (PDMS@Ag MPs) is elaborated. By judiciously using evaporation‐induced capillary effect, 3D interconnected conductive paths consisting of closely packed conductive PDMS@Ag MPs are constructed inside the elastic matrix. The spatially selective distributed Ag‐shell enables conductor metallic conductivity (67185 S cm−1) at ultralow Ag fraction (19.5 wt.%), and well‐maintained conductance over wide strain (820 S cm−1 at 400%). Due to the suppressed Ag content, both the rapture strain and Young's modulus (613%, 0.79 MPa for CPSC4) of the conductor are largely retained. Besides, the synergy hierarchical surface topology and low surface energy endow conductors with high water‐repellent properties. The fabricated conductors with remarkably high conductivity, well‐retained conductance under large strain, and robust hydrophobicity are of great significance for advanced stretchable electronics.

Abstract:A particle‐matrix interface modification strategy is introduced to synthesize ultra‐stretchable (900% strain) and highly conductive liquid metal (LM) elastomer composites. PVP‐functionalized LM microparticles form a strain‐insensitive conductive network once stretched to 60% strain. These printed conductors show higher stability across a wide range of strain rates in comparison to pure LM. Integrating liquid metal (LM) particles into compliant polymers presents an innovative approach for developing intelligent and adaptable systems in stretchable electronics, wearable devices, soft robotics, and other emerging technologies. However, the inherent electrically insulative nature of these solid‐liquid composites, compounded by the gallium oxide shell surrounding LM droplets, poses a significant challenge in establishing conductive pathways, especially for small droplet sizes and ultrasoft elastomers. Here, an interface modification approach that addresses this bottleneck and enables the synthesis of highly stretchable and printable composites with LM microparticles ( 900% strain), and minimal resistance change (≈131%). Furthermore, this comprehensive study of the electromechanical response of these stretchable conductors under various strain rates reveals their exceptional stability under dynamic loading conditions, surpassing the performance of conductive traces composed of sprayed liquid metal. Finally, the potential application of these multifunctional materials in stretchable circuitry, addressing the demand for high stretchability and stability in wearable electronics, is demonstrated.

Abstract:Previous studies on UV-curable elastomer for digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing flexible electronics mostly focused on higher stretchability and healability, thereby ignoring rapid recoverability after a stretch which is very important for the real-time transmission of electrical signals in flexible electronics. Herein, a UV-curable elastomer is developed with a novel dynamic hierarchical crosslinking network that can be stretched up to over 800% and rapid recoverability at 300% strain. We proposed a hydrogel-elastomer assembling process to simplify the manufacturing process for stretchable conductors. The stretchable conductors served as a strain sensor exhibiting excellent stability and repeatability after 10 cycles at 20–50% strain with low signal drift and hysteresis, Moreover, the strain sensor can be utilised in recognising the different bending angles of the finger, making DLP printing of conductive elastomer a viable strategy for the rapid manufacturing of flexible electronics.

Liquid–Metal‐Superlyophilic and Conductivity–Strain‐Enhancing Scaffold for Permeable Superelastic Conductors

Abstract:Liquid metal (LM) has recently been used as an advanced stretchable material for constructing stretchable and wearable electronics. However, due to the poor wettability of LM and the large dimensional change during stretching, it remains very challenging to obtain a high conductivity with minimum resistance increase over large tensile strains. To address the challenge, an LM-superlyophilic and stretchable fibrous thin-film scaffold is reported, on which LM can be readily coated or printed to form permeable superelastic conductors. In contrast to conventional LM-based conductors where LM particles are filled into an elastic matrix or printed on the surface of an elastic thin film, the LM can quickly infuse into the LM-superlyophilic scaffold and form bi-continuous phases. The LM-superlyophilic scaffold shows unprecedented advantages of an extremely high uptake of the LM and a conductivity-enhancement characteristic when stretched. As a result, the LM-based conductor displays and ultrahigh conductivity of 155 900 S cm−1 and a marginal resistance change by only 2.5 fold at 2 500% strain. The conductor also possesses a remarkable durability over a period of 220 000 cycles of stretching tests. The printing of LM onto the LM-superlyophilic scaffold for the fabrication of various permeable and wearable electronic devices is demonstrated.

A Highly Transparent and Ultra-Stretchable Conductor with Stable Conductivity During Large Deformation

Abstract:Intrinsically stretchable conductors have undergone rapid development in the past few years and a variety of strategies have been established to improve their electro-mechanical properties. However, ranging from electronically to ionically conductive materials, they are usually vulnerable either to large deformation or at high/low temperatures, mainly due to the fact that conductive domains are generally incompatible with neighboring elastic networks. This is a problem that is usually overlooked and remains challenging to address. Here, we introduce synergistic effect between conductive zwitterionic nanochannels and dynamic hydrogen-bonding networks to break the limitations. The conductor is highly transparent (>90% transmittance), ultra-stretchable (>10,000% strain), high-modulus (>2 MPa Young's modulus), self-healing, and capable of maintaining stable conductivity during large deformation and at different temperatures. Transparent integrated systems are further demonstrated via 3D printing of its precursor and could achieve diverse sensory capabilities towards strain, temperature, humidity, etc., and even recognition of different liquids.

Abstract:In recent years, with the widespread application of stretchable electronic devices, the demand for high performance wearable strain sensors is increasing. We propose a simple strategy to prepare a stretchable composite conductor based on the good miscibility of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly (styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) under doping. Although the addition of high concentration PEDOT:PSS can improve conductivity, it also reduces the mechanical properties and transmittance of the conductor. The composite conductor containing 20 wt% PEDOT:PSS not only exhibit good electrical conductivity, recovery and piezoresistive effects, but also have excellent tensile properties, transparency and cycle stability. As a core application, composite conductor can be directly attached to human skin as strain sensors for real-time monitoring of the knuckles, elbows and knee joints. In addition, we also reveal the scalability of the conductor preparation technology, that is, the PEDOT:PSS/PDMS blends exhibits satisfactory screen printing suitability. The printed conductor maintains the electrical conductivity and flexibility of the material itself, and the printing effect has no obvious detail missing.

Abstract:Printable and stretchable conductors based on metallic filler‐reinforced polymer composites that can maintain high electrical conductivity at large strains are essential for emerging applications in wearable electronics, soft robotics, and bio‐integrated devices. Regulating microstructures of conductive fillers during mechanical deformations is the key to reconstructing the conductive pathway and retaining high electrical conductivity, which has proven to be challenging. Here, we report that Ag flakes can spontaneously reorganize inside a viscoelastic, liquid‐like polymer matrix by cyclic mechanical stretching, resulting in reconstructed microstructures and forming highly efficient and stable conductive pathways. Consequently, the electrical conductivities of the resultant composites can be dramatically enhanced by 4∼8 orders of magnitude and reach ∼104 S/cm. The stretch‐induced kinematic movements of Ag flakes inside the polymer matrix, together with the reorganization and stabilization mechanisms, are unraveled and validated by the dissipative particle dynamics simulations. This unique phenomenon enables high‐performance stretchable conductors to be fabricated with significantly reduced conductive fillers. The printable and stretchable composites presented here hold great promise for uses in soft and stretchable electronics, as demonstrated in stretchable light‐emitting diode arrays and wearable electronics. Abstract:Abstract Liquid metal represents a highly conductive and inherently deformable conductor for the development of stretchable electronics. The widespread implementations of liquid metal towards functional sensors and circuits are currently hindered by the lack of a facile and scalable patterning approach. In this study, we report a fully solution-based process to generate patterned features of the liquid metal conductor. The entire process is carried out under ambient conditions and is generally compatible with various elastomeric substrates. The as-prepared liquid metal feature exhibits high resolution (100 μm), excellent electrical conductivity (4.15 × 10 4 S cm −1 ), ultrahigh stretchability (1000% tensile strain), and mechanical durability. The practical suitability is demonstrated by the heterogeneous integration of light-emitting diode (LED) chips with liquid metal interconnects for a stretchable and wearable LED array. The solution-based technique reported here is the enabler for the facile patterning of liquid metal features at low cost, which may find a broad range of applications in emerging fields of epidermal sensors, wearable heaters, advanced prosthetics, and soft robotics.
