Abstract:Water contamination by ammonium (NH4+) can present considerable risks to natural ecosystems. This work evaluates the potential application of biochar, produced from the pyrolysis of digested sludge, to remove ammonium from water. Anaerobic digester sludge was collected from a municipal wastewater treatment plant in Alberta, Canada, and individual biochars were produced at 50 degrees C temperature increments between 350 degrees C and 550 degrees C. The chemical characteristics of the resulting biochars were determined using elemental analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), BET surface area analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Our findings demonstrate that the biochar yield decreased with increasing pyrolysis temperature, and biochar produced at 450 degrees C (BC450) had the highest ammonium removal capacity due to its higher surface area and functional group density. The Langmuir isotherm best described the observed ammonium removal capacity by the biochars, indicating that monolayer chemical adsorption may be the dominating mechanism. Biochar ammonium removal capacity was 1.2 mg NH4-N per gram of biochar in municipal wastewater, which is lower than that observed in parallel experiments using a synthetic ammonium solution (1.4 mg NH4+-N/g biochar). This phenomenon is likely due to competition between ammonia and other containments for sorption to biochar surface sites. Our results demonstrate for the first time ever that biochar produced from digester sludge is a promising adsorbent for ammonium removal from municipal wastewater. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Biochar has been documented to enhance the performance of anaerobic digestion, a technique extensively utilized in the initial treatment of highly concentrated wastewater. However, the impact of biochar derived from sewage sludge on the digestion efficiency of anaerobic granules has not been previously explored. In this investigation, we introduced sewage sludge-derived biochar into the anaerobic digestion process, incorporating it with anaerobic granular sludge, to assess its effect on methane generation. As the pyrolysis temperature escalated, there was an increase in both the levels of heavy metals and the pH, factors that hindered methane generation from anaerobic granules. Methane generation from the established anaerobic granular sludge remained unaffected by the presence of biochar. However, concerning the free anaerobic microorganisms responsible for methane production in the solution, biochar expedited electron transfer while impeding methane production by channeling more electrons towards sulfate reduction. The outcomes of this study offer a theoretical basis for the utilization of sewage sludge-derived biochar in bioreactor technology based on granular anaerobic sludge.

Abstract:The aim of this work was to investigate the effects of biochars derived from different feedstocks and pyrolysis temperatures on the anaerobic digestion (AD) of kitchen waste (KW). Nine biomass feedstocks (corn straw (CS), Dicranopteris dichotoma (DD), bamboo (B), KW, tea residues (TR), mushroom cultivation waste (MW), cassava lees (CL), Chlorella (C), and sargassum (S)) were pyrolyzed at different temperatures (300 °C, 500 °C, and 800 °C). Biochar varied in physicochemical properties (e.g., specific surface area, total pore volume, and organic functional group) depending on both feedstock type and pyrolysis temperature. This further impacted the enrichment of functional microbial consortia and development of methanogenic pathways, resulting in a varied AD performance. The addition of biochars generated respectively from CS, MW, and S at 800 °C, 300 °C, and 500 °C significantly improved the maximum methane production rate (Rm) and methane yield, while other biochars enhanced either Rm or methane yield. Therefore, the efficacy of biochar on methanogenesis associated with both the feedstock type and pyrolysis temperature. The findings offer a beneficial reference for the selection and application of biochar to improve the AD performance.

Abstract:Anaerobic digestion generates a significant amount of byproduct known as digestate, necessitating resourceful disposal. However, the digestate biochar may exert certain impacts on the pyrolysis of sludge, especially regarding the release of N/S/Cl during the pyrolysis process. This may lead to environmental risks and impose restrictions on the recycling of digestate. There is limited existing research on this topic. In this study, the impact and mechanism of digestate biochar on pyrolysis products were analyzed through kinetic analysis, TG-MS, and Py-GC/MS, with a specific focus on the release characteristics of polluting elements during the pyrolysis process. The findings indicate that the Fe-containing digestate biochar, owing to the larger specific surface area, richer functional groups and catalytic activity associated with Fe 3+ , enhances the production of C/H/O gases during pyrolysis while reducing the release of NH 3 , NO 2 , and H 2 S. Particularly, Fe-containing digestate biochar significantly enhances the release of Cl-containing gases. The decrease in tar content indicates that Fe-containing digestate biochar promotes the catalytic removal of tar. A comprehensive comparison and analysis of the reaction mechanism were conducted in this study, providing a theoretical basis for the release of pollutants from digestate pyrolysis while enhancing the control and management of pollutants containing N/S/Cl.

Abstract:Owing to the intricate physicochemical characteristics of biochar material, a comprehensive understanding of their effects and mechanisms involved in anaerobic digestion still needs to be explored. In this study, the methane yield of sludge hydrolysate was inhibited by 13.3% after the addition of granular activated carbon (GAC), which was due to the predominance of non-selective adsorption by GAC. Whereas the shortened lag phase time (38.2%), the improved methane production rate (16.6%), and the increased methane yield (7.6%) were achieved after the algal biochar (ABC) addition. The methanogenic improvements by ABC were attributed to its redox capacity other than pH buffering capacity. Quantitative results showed that the content of phenolic and lactonic groups were 4.8 and 2.3 times higher than that of GAC, respectively, which endowed ABC with a stronger redox capacity, especially electron-donating capacity. Surface oxygen-containing functional groups like phenolic and lactonic groups of biochar material should be valued for the improvement of anaerobic digestion. The findings of this study provided a comprehensive insight into the connection between mechanisms and related biochar properties during the anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge, which also provided an important clue to selecting, even harnessing desirable biochar material for a given biotechnological process.

Abstract:Biochar has been proven to be capable of improving the performance of anaerobic digestion (AD). However, the effect of biochar on microbial communities remains ambiguous. In this study, the influence of pH was excluded in a semi-continuous anaerobic digestor for the treatment of dewatered waste activated sludge (WAS) to determine the effect of biochar on microbes. Compared with the control group, the average methane production increased by 24.5% and 23.2% at the organic loading rates (OLRs) of 1.56 and 3.00 gTS/L/d, respectively, in the presence of biochar. This study innovatively found biochar accelerated the enrichment of Methanofastidiosaceae , which competed with Methanobacteriaceae for H 2 , and its abundance increased from 0.99% at the OLR of 1.56 g TS/L/d to 16.57% and 38.11% at the OLR of 3.00 and 5.60 gTS/L/d, respectively. The efficient metabolic network of f__norank_o__Aminicenantales , syntrophic bacteria, Methanofastidiosaceae and Methanosaetaceae promoted the conversion of WAS to CH 4 in the biochar group. In addition, metagenome analysis revealed that biochar optimized the metabolites related to energy conservation and electron transfer, particularly for hydrogenase ( frhABG , mbhLHK and hndA-D ), confirming that biochar changed the way H 2 was involved in methanogenesis . These findings provide novel insights into the direct effect of biochar on microbial evolution and facilitate the reduction of WAS to achieve higher economic benefits in biogas production.

Abstract:Different pyrolysis methods, parameters and feedstocks result in biochars with different properties, structures and removal capacities for heavy metals. However, the role of each property on adsorption capacity and corresponding causal relationships remain unclear. Here, we investigated various physicochemical properties of biochar produced via three different methods and two different feedstocks to clarify influences of biomass sources and pyrolysis processes on biochar properties and its heavy metal adsorption performance. Experimental results showed biochars were more aromatic and contained more functional groups after hydrothermal carbonization , while they had developed pores and higher surface areas produced by anaerobic pyrolysis. The inclusion of oxygen resulted in more complete carbonization and higher CEC biochar. Different biochar properties resulted in different adsorption capacities. Biochar produced by aerobic calcination showed higher adsorption efficiency for Cu and Pb. Correlation analysis proved that pH, cation exchange capacity and degree of carbonization positively affected adsorption, while organic matter content and aromaticity were unfavorable for adsorption. Microstructure and components determined biochar macroscopic properties and ultimate adsorption efficiency for metal ions. This study identifies the degree of correlation and pathways of each property on adsorption, which provides guidance for targeted modification of biochar to enhance its performance in heavy metal removal.

Abstract:Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a biological process that occurs in the limited presence of oxygen. This process involves various difficulties during the operation, such as acidification and increased concentration of volatile fatty acids, which can inhibit methane production. Therefore, in this work, the impact of biochar on the co-digestion of untreated sludge and residual biomass under mesophilic conditions was studied. For the production of biochar, the gasification process was used at different temperatures: 759 °C (BL), 798 °C (BM), and 888 °C (BH). This biochar was added in concentrations of 0 g/L, 3.33 g/L, and 6.67 g/L at the beginning of the co-digestion process. The results showed that a concentration of 6.67 g/L with BH biochar increased the PBM by 18% compared to the control sample and reduced the chemical oxygen demand (COD) by 88%. In addition, there was a reduction of volatile fatty acids (VFA) of 42.75%. Furthermore, FTIR analysis demonstrated that biochar has appropriate functional groups for this process. These data suggest a good interaction of biochar with the mixture of sludge and municipal waste, indicating that biochar can improve the anaerobic co-digestion of untreated sludge and municipal waste.

Abstract:In this study, a comprehensive research was conducted for pyrolysis kinetics and biochar characterization with sewage sludge. Pyrolysis kinetics were investigated using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) using sludge samples divided into four particle size ranges. Also, surface properties and Cu(II) adsorption capacities were determined for biochars produced at 300, 500, 600, 700, and 900 degrees C. Similar thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) profiles were observed with the tested particle size ranges (<2 mm). Using a reaction model, estimated kinetic parameters indicated that sludge particle size and heating rate affected activation energy. In biochar characterization study, it was observed that the surface chemical functional groups of biochar was reduced with increasing pyrolysis temperature. The maximum BET surface area was measured from biochar produced at 600 degrees C as 92.3 m(2)/g. Also, the biochar produced at 600 degrees C showed the maximum Cu(II) adsorption capacity (146.7 mg/g biochar). Electrostatic adsorption was the main mechanism of Cu(II) adsorption for biochar produced at 600 degrees C, but complexation/precipitation was the main mechanism of Cu(II) adsorption for biochar produced at 300 degrees C and 900 degrees C. These adsorption results indicated that the adsorption mechanism and capacity of biochar could be modified by controlling pyrolysis temperature. (C) 2017 Institution of Chemical Engineers. Abstract:This work explored the effect of temperature, production method, and feedstock type on the physicochemical and biological properties of biochars and hydrochars. Biochars and hydrochars made at lower temperatures had higher production rates. Higher pyrolysis temperatures not only increased carbon content of biochars but also produced higher thermal stability biochars that did not start to decompose in air after 400–450°C. The production method showed strong effect on biochar properties. Compared to the dry-pyrolysis biochars derived from the same feedstocks, the hydrochars had more acidic pH values and lower carbon contents. The results showed that feedstock types could also influence characteristics of the biochars. None of the chars showed statistically significant effects on plant seed germination and seedling growth and thus could be used as soil amendments. Our findings indicated that biochars with different properties could be developed by changing production conditions to better satisfy their environmental applications.

Abstract:The inhibition of volatile fatty acid (VFA) production is an important factor affecting biogas (methane) production in the anaerobic co-digestion systems comprising food waste and sewage sludge. In this study, batch experiments were conducted at medium temperature (36 ± 0.5 °C), during which the biogas production index and material–liquid characteristic parameters of the anaerobic digestion systems containing different concentrations of iron-loaded biochar (Fe-BC) were monitored. The cumulative biogas production data were analyzed using a modified Gompertz kinetic model to determine the effect of the Fe-BC on biogas production in the anaerobic co-digestion system. Studies have shown that addition of Fe-BC does not significantly influence the hydrolysis and acidification stages of anaerobic co-digestion, but does have a significant effect on promoting methanogenesis by alleviating the accumulation of VFAs and improving both the buffer capacity of the system and the efficiency of substrate-to-biogas conversion. When the Fe-BC concentration was 16 g·L−1, the cumulative biogas production reached 329.42 mL·g-VS−1, which was 49.7% higher than the blank group, and the lag period was 3.55 d, which was 42% shorter than the blank group. Mechanistic studies have shown that Fe-BC increased the concentration of coenzyme F420 and the conductivity of the digestate in the co-digestion system, which increased the activity of methanogens in the anaerobic digestion system, thereby promoting methanogenesis.

Abstract:The utilization of sludge-based biochar, characterized by abundant pore structures, proves advantageous in enhancing sludge dewatering performance. In this study, advanced anaerobic digestion sludge underwent pyrolysis to produce biochar, subsequently employed for sludge conditioning. Results revealed that biochar, obtained at 800 °C, exhibited the highest specific surface area (105.3 m2/g) and pore volume (0.17 cm3/g). As the pyrolysis temperature increased, the sludge's functional groups tended to aromatize. When used to condition sludge, particularly at a 20 % (dry solid) dosage, biochar significantly reduced sludge capillary suction time and floc size. The addition of biochar enhanced the conditioning effect of cationic polyacrylamide by absorbing extracellular polymeric substances, creating water molecule channels, and forming skeletons for sludge flocs. These findings introduce a novel approach to sludge reuse and provide valuable data supporting the use of biochar as a sludge conditioner.

Abstract:The requirements for enhanced technologies, such as pyrolysis and anaerobic digestion, are crucial to improve food waste and sewage sludge and address the difficulty in disposing of hardly biodegradable residues. The pyrolysis process was applied to two waste streams, namely hardly biodegradable residues and sewage sludge, at 500 °C with a heating rate of 25 °C min−1 to obtain hardly biodegradable residues biochar (DBR-Char) and sewage sludge biochar (SS-Char). The two biochars were then used as additives during anaerobic digestion of food waste treatment to enhance biogas production and reactor robustness to achieve average methane contents in biogas up to 75% compared with the control. Biochar addition also improved process stability, with the Methanosaeta/Methanothrix 99.55% in the CK1 (reactor with inoculum, food waste, and DBR-Char) and 98.13% in the CK2 (reactor with inoculum, food waste, and SS-Char) as the dominant genera among the anaerobic consortia. This study averted the hardly biodegradable residues and sewage sludge disposal challenges via pyrolysis and offered biochar utilization to promote reactor stability and biogas production in food waste fermentation.

Abstract:This study investigated the impact of different types of biochar on the anaerobic digestion (AD) of chicken manure. Wheat straw, discarded fruitwood, and air-dried chicken manure were pyrolysed at 350, 450, and 550 degrees C to generate biochar. A lab-scale batch anaerobic digestion experiment was conducted at 35 +/- 1 degrees C. Substantial improvements in methane production were observed for all nine types of biochar. With the production of 294 mL CH4/g VSadded, fruitwood char pyrolysed at 550 degrees C increased the methane yield by 69% from the control. Characteristic analysis indicated that fruitwood char pyrolysed at 550 degrees C exhibited the largest specific surface area and highest total ammonia nitrogen reduction capacity. The buffering capacity of the AD system was improved by the biochar through accelerating the transformation of macromolecular substances to dissolved substrates and reducing the contents of soluble salts, total ammonia nitrogen, and free ammonia.
Specific surface area and electron donating capacity determine biochar's role in methane production during anaerobic digestion

Abstract:The addition of biochar derived from different materials can have varying effects on anaerobic digestion (AD), depending on its physicochemical properties. Physicochemical properties of biochars, biomethanization performance and microbial communities were examined to evaluate the effectiveness of biochars made from different plant wastes on AD in this study. Results showed that all biochars significantly reduce the lag phases during AD, compared with a control treatment (CK). Woody biochars particularly performed much better than herbal ones. Correlation analysis revealed that specific surface area (SSA) and electron donating capacity (EDC) were the key properties of the plant-feedstock-derived biochar in AD enhancement. Microbial community structure analysis showed that higher SSA and EDC are conducive for the growth of bacteria decomposing glucose, further promoting daily methane production in the early AD stage. The results indicate that it is important to select biochar with higher SSA and EDC to enhance biomethanization in AD systems.
Biochar derived from alkali-treated sludge residue regulates anaerobic digestion: Enhancement performance and potential mechanisms

Abstract:Biochar produced from bio-wastes has been widely used to promote the performance of anaerobic digestion. Waste activated sludge (WAS) is considered as a kind of popular precursor for biochar preparation, but the abundant resources in WAS were neglected previously. In this study, the roles of biochar prepared from raw, pretreated, and fermented sludge on anaerobic digestion were investigated. That is, parts of carbon sources and nutrients like polysaccharides, proteins, and phosphorus were firstly recovered after sludge pretreatment or fermentation, and then the sludge residuals were used as raw material to prepare biochar. The methane yield improved by 22.1% with adding the biochar (AK-BC) prepared by sludge residual obtained from alkaline pretreatment. Mechanism study suggested that the characteristics of AK-BC like specific surface area and defect levels were updated. Then, the conversion performance of intermediate metabolites and electro-activities of extracellular polymeric substances were up-regulated. As a result, the activity of electron transfer was increased with the presence of AK-BC, with increase ratio of 21.4%. In addition, the electroactive microorganisms like Anaerolineaceae and Methanosaeta were enriched with the presence of AK-BC, and the potential direct interspecies electron transfer was possibly established. Moreover, both aceticlastic and CO2-reducing methanogenesis pathways were improved by up-regulating related enzymes. Therefore, the proposed strategy can not only obtain preferred biochar but also recover abundant resources like carbon source, nutrients, and bioenergy.
Effects of biochar addition on the anaerobic digestion of carbohydrate-rich, protein-rich, and lipid-rich substrates

Abstract:Although biochar addition into the anaerobic digestion of food waste (FW) is an efficient means to enhance methane production, the effects of biochar on various FW components remain unclear. Laboratory batch experiments were conducted to investigate the impact of sewage sludge-derived biochar (SSB) supplementation on the anaerobic digestion (AD) of major FW components, including carbohydrate-rich, protein-rich, and lipid-rich substrates. The lag phase of AD with the carbohydrate-rich substrate was 48.6% shorter when SSB was added, and the cumulative methane yield was 4.74 times higher compared to AD without biochar. SSB supplementation also increased the rate of methane production from the lipid-rich substrate. However, the effect of SSB addition on AD of the protein-rich substrate was minor. Analysis of the microbial communities revealed that methanogen growth was enhanced during AD of the carbohydrate-rich and lipid-rich substrates, but not the protein-rich substrate, following SSB supplementation. Also, the most dominant methanogenic genus varied with the substrates. SSB addition promoted the growth of hydrolytic and fermentative bacteria, particularly phylum Bacteroidetes.Implications: Biochar supplementation has been studied to overcome the shortcomings of anaerobic digestion (AD). However, the effects of biochar on different substrates remain unclear. This study compared carbohydrate-rich, protein-rich, and lipid-rich substrates in anaerobic digestion with sewage sludge-derived biochar (SSB). SSB supplementation improved methane generation from all but the protein-rich substrate. The study results imply that the effect of SSB addition on AD varied with the substrate due to the substrates underwent different degradation processes with different microbial communities.

The Role of Electrochemical Properties of Biochar to Promote Methane Production in Anaerobic Digestion

Abstract:The electrochemical properties of biochar may be the key factor to promote anaerobic digestion, which has attracted extensive attention. However, the mechanism and the role of the electrochemical properties of biochar are remaining unclear. In this study, biochar with different electrochemical properties was prepared by pyrolysis at different temperatures (BC300/600/900) and oxidation or reduction modification (O/RBC300/600/900). The biochar was added as an additive to promote methanogenic performance of anaerobic digesters of glucose and food waste. In both anaerobic digestion systems, the cumulative methane production of food waste increased by 42.07% and the maximum methane production rate of glucose enhanced by 17.80% after BC900 treatment. RBC600 was inferior to BC900, but superior to BC600. Microbiological analysis suggests that biochar enriched the relative abundant Synergistia and Methanoculleus. This is conducive to the establishment of the direct interspecies electrons transfer (DIET). Results from correlation analysis, principal component analysis and machine learning confirmed that both of the electron donating capacities (EDC) and electrical conductivity (EC) are dominated factors affecting the cumulative methane yield. Through the analysis of electrochemical properties and preparation process of biochar, the results showed that the pyrolysis temperature increases and the content of phenolic hydroxyl decreases under medium temperature of biochar, which was beneficial to the methane production. This study found the key factors of the electrochemical properties of biochar in anaerobic digestion, provided new insights for the mechanism of biochar promoting anaerobic digestion and proposed novel directions for the preparation of biochar.
Influence of pyrolysis temperature on properties and environmental safety of heavy metals in biochars derived from municipal sewage sludge

Abstract:Dried raw sludge was pyrolyzed at temperatures ranging from 400 to 600°C at the increase of 50°C intervals to investigate the influence of pyrolysis temperature on properties and environmental safety of heavy metals in biochar derived from municipal sewage sludge. The sludge biochar yield decreased significantly with increasing pyrolysis temperature but the pH, ash content and specific surface area increased. Conversion of sludge to biochar markedly decreased the H/C and N/C ratios. FT-IR analysis confirmed a dramatic depletion of H and N and a higher degree of aromatic condensation in process of biochar formation at higher temperatures. The total concentrations of Cu, Zn, Pb, Cr, Mn, and Ni increased with conversion of sludge to biochar and increasing pyrolysis temperature. However, using BCR sequential extraction and analysis, it was found that most of the heavy metals existed in the oxizable and residual forms after pyrolysis, especially at 600°C, resulting in a significant reduction in their bioavailability, leading to a very low environmental risk of the biochar. The present study indicates pyrolysis is a promising sludge treatment method for heavy metals immobilization in biochar, and highlights the potential to minimize the harmful effects of biochar by controlling pyrolysis temperature.
