Abstract:Emotional and social intelligence competencies are related to the understanding and management of the self and of interpersonal relationships. This chapter explores the definitions and classifications of these competencies, as well as how they can be developed in an effective and sustainable way. It analyzes the importance of emotional and social competencies by providing a classification of different behaviors correlated with effectiveness. The chapter presents the Intentional Change Theory by describing its neurological underpinning and examining in depth each of the phases of this process. It describes what emotional and social intelligence competencies are and why they are important in enhancing cognitive readiness and ultimately performance. Social intelligence competencies involve understanding others and managing relationships with other people. Extensive empirical evidence has demonstrated that the Intentional Change Process has been successfully applied to the development of emotional and social competencies in different contexts.
What's All this Talk About Emotion? Developing Emotional Intelligence in Social Work Students

Abstract:The capacity to manage emotional reactions effectively, frequently in complex care settings, is central to the role of a social worker. Nonetheless, there is evidence that social work students frequently find their placements emotionally demanding and stressful. It is proposed that emotional intelligence may help students manage their emotional reactions more effectively during placements and their subsequent career. To date, however, little systematic research has explored whether emotional intelligence and associated competencies can be enhanced during social work training and the implications for wellbeing. This paper presents a mixed-methods two-stage study which aimed to increase emotional competencies in social work students during the first year of training. More specifically, it assesses the impact of a workshop designed to enhance emotional competencies and an emotional writing task on levels of emotional intelligence, reflective ability and empathy which were assessed via questionnaire and reflective logs pre- and post-intervention (Times 1 and 2). Levels of reflective ability and empathy increased significantly between Times 1 and 2 and psychological distress decreased. Content analysis of reflective logs found evidence that reflective ability, empathy and emotional intelligence were enhanced following the interventions. The implications of the findings for the development of the curriculum are considered.
From self-awareness to social savvy: how intrapersonal skills shape interpersonal competence in university students

Abstract:Introduction: The extant study was conducted over a cross-sectional period and aimed to assess the effect of intrapersonal on the interpersonal dimensions of Emotional Intelligence among University Students. Methods: A literature survey was carried out, and the study's hypotheses were framed. Utilising a standardised Emotional Intelligence Scale, a widely accepted and validated measurement tool in the field, for measurement, the survey was disseminated in digital and physical formats. The researchers employed the snowball sampling technique to distribute the questionnaires and recruit volunteers for the study. The data collection period spanned from August 2023 through September 2023. The demographic information of the individuals was described using the SPSS 25 software, while the dataset for the personal and social competencies was analysed using the SmartPLS software. Results and discussion: The research reveals a statistically significant association between the variables under investigation. Specifically, there exists a negative correlation between Motivation and Social Skills, as well as between Self-regulation and Social Awareness. These findings open up exciting opportunities for future research, inspiring further exploration into the development of intrapersonal and interpersonal competencies among students.

Abstract:Self-awareness is the competency of how feelings, ideas, and moral principles affect an individual's performance in various settings, including the family or the classroom. The main purpose of this study is to look at the self-awareness and practices of students within the classroom. There are multiple stakeholders, i.e., teachers, heads & researcher observations, were included in this research. The case study offered the chance to gather rich contextualized data for SEL self-awareness skills of students’ skills and practices. The federal public secondary school was chosen to collect the data. Based on the results of the innovation configuration map (IC) on a list of potential participants, three schools were chosen. Before the final school site decision, a request for participation was made to all participating schools, with the administrators of each school participating. The information from the respondents was gathered using the purposive sampling technique. Student observations, focus group teacher interviews, and head interviews were used to gather data. To analyze the data, the researcher used NVivo 11 to interpret the results. The study results revealed that knowledge, abilities, and good communication among students, teachers, family & community are the best skills and practices indicated for decision-making. Curriculum designers should revisit the self-awareness competencies & practices in the curriculum.

Abstract:Importance. Within the framework of modern education reform, the training of an education specialist with a set of personal qualities formed on the basis of social intelligence acquires a special sound. However, the issue of scientific and methodological support for the development of this personality trait within the modern space of the university is ambiguous and far from its scientific solution and practical implementation in practice. The purpose of the research is to study the conditions for the formation of social intelligence, to discover the mechanisms of its relationship with the empathy of students of pedagogical training areas. Research methods. The following methods were used: content analysis of scientific literature on the topic of research, generalization, systematization, structuring of information, methods of psychodiagnostics, methods of mathematical statistics (correlation analysis). Results and Discussion. The relationship between social intelligence, emotional flexibility and the ability to understand and manage the emotions of respondents is revealed. In addition, one of the research tasks was to establish the connection of social intelligence with the level of empathy development. It should be noted that the majority of respondents have average and low indicators of emotional intelligence, which indicates an insufficient formation of personal qualities that affect self-motivation to any activity. Moreover, this circumstance affects the ability to recognize the emotions of other people. According to some scales, for example, “Managing one’s own emotions”, low results were revealed, so the inability and incorrect expression of one’s own emotions significantly complicates communication processes among students. High indicators of the “Moral normativity” scale indicate a competent self-assessment of social roles, a high orientation towards compliance with the norms of behavior at the university and in society as a whole. A correlation was found between empathy and emotional intelligence, adaptive potential and penetrating abilities in empathy, which can be used in the process of training of a specialist in the field of education. Conclusion. Practical application of the obtained results is possible for the development of psychological and pedagogical conditions and technologies for the development of social intelligence of students in the field of educational activity.

Abstract:The research purposes for encouraging study of social and emotion intelligence (S+EI) for secondary school students. Also, this research studied the developing aware of oneself and others in the present and utilising that awareness to manage oneself (our behaviour, our responses to difficult or demanding situations) and our relationships with others in deference age and gender to find the result of self-awareness between two groups of students including students who have learnt self-managing social and emotion and students who have studied in traditional way. The methodologies that used in this research are composed of the study plan that encourages development of intelligence for secondary school students by observing behaviour of both social and emotion, observing individual behaviour, and doing questionnaire about social and emotion by adopting statistic, frequency, and percentages to evaluate. The researcher found that students from Mahasarakham University Demonstration school (Secondary school) who have learnt to manage their social and emotion have different result of developing their social and emotion intelligence according to different study period, gender, and age. Therefore, students who have different learning styles had different self-awareness learning outcomes at the statistical significance level of .05.

Abstract:Current society demands people with different attitudes and competences who are able to thrive in the global world. Since its appearance in the 1990s, the relevance of the concept of Emotional Intelligence has only grown within the education system, as it is seen by recent research as an essential competence that needs to be developed to achieve the holistic training of students. This study was conducted in a high school of Spain with the participation of the English department and 49 English learners who answered some questionnaires to examine how teachers and students from a EFL classroom context perceive issues related with Emotional Intelligence such as the perception and expression of emotion, emotional facilitation of thinking, understanding of emotion and regulation of emotion. Besides, it spotlights their potential interest in working with some projects proposed following the Project Based Learning (PBL) approach. Results showed a growing awareness of own and other’s emotions among the participants and their interest in developing the projects to work on Emotional Intelligence in the EFL classroom.

Abstract:Background: One of the current challenges in higher education is the development of students' emotional competencies, and consequently, how these competencies can be trained. Moreover, this must be addressed within the UN framework of inclusive, equitable, quality education (United Nations Agenda 2030; SDG 4). Methods: The present study the following objectives: (1) to study the degree of interest and the level of general knowledge that students studying for Education degrees perceive themselves to have; (2) to examine the perception of the participants of variables of emotional knowledge, according to their degree program and year of study; (3) to analyze the relationship between these emotional knowledge variables and perceived emotional intelligence (EI), using Spearman's Rho test; and (4) to study the predictive capacity of the study variables on future teachers' emotional knowledge variables through a linear regression analysis. The study sample contained a total of 434 university students from three degree programs at two universities in Spain. Two instruments were used: an ad hoc questionnaire, which assessed perceived emotional knowledge according to three variables (general knowledge of EI, where the level of training in EI is considered; intrapersonal knowledge of EI; and theoretical/practical knowledge related to teaching), and the Trait Meta-Mood Scale (TMMS-24), which assesses metaknowledge of emotional states (attention, clarity, and repair). Results: The results of this study show that there are differences in students' self-perceived knowledge of EI depending on their course and degree, and indicate that students present high interest, while their perceived level of knowledge is low. In addition, emotional clarity is the EI variable that was identified as being important in the emotional knowledge of future teachers, and therefore, a key skill to stimulate in a theoretical/practical way during their initial training. Conclusion: This study shows evidence of the importance of social–emotional competencies in initial teacher training.

Abstract:Emotional and social competencies have been shown to be extremely desirable in young people for their successful entry into the labor market. Their development has been studied primarily as a result of formal training in the educational and work domains, whereas relatively little is known about the role played by extracurricular activities in promoting these types of competencies. Non-working personal experiences are often used as proxies to assess the emotional and social competencies of candidates in recruitment and selection phases. However, this inference is not based on clear scientific evidence. Drawing on experiential learning theory, this study investigated empirically the relationship between a range of extracurricular activities (volunteering, cultural activities, experience abroad, sport) and the competency portfolio of graduates. Data were collected from a sample of 324 graduates through a structured survey and a multi-rater assessment of their emotional and social competencies. The results of the Partial Least Square-Path Modeling in general provide support for the positive association between experiential extracurricular activities and emotional and social competencies, although not all relationships are supported. The present study contributes to advance in the understanding of the determinants of emotional and social competencies by examining their relationship with a broad range of extracurricular activities. Moreover, it discusses implications for higher education and human resource management.

Abstract:Social competence and emotional intelligence have become popular phrases in the current educational scenario. It is a kind of social intelligence that includes the ability to monitor one's feelings and emotions, discriminate among them, and utilize information to guide one's thinking and action. Emotional intelligence is a variety of non-intellectual capacities, capabilities, and abilities that impact coping with environmental demands and pressure. Education is essential for human development. But lack of institutions with sufficient infrastructural facilities, lack of competent teachers with practical communication skills in the tribal language, and lack of enough textbooks have been the leading cause of educational deprivation of some of the scheduled community members. To cope with the necessities of the modern world, the government and private schools should bring them realism in contemporary education. This paper investigates the social competence and educational aspirations related to the emotional intelligence of secondary school students. The sample size is 89 students from Private and Government schools. The researcher collected primary data from secondary school students using structured questionnaires and the secondary data from the school website and reports.
A Case Study of 21st Century Cognitive, Social and Emotional Competencies Using Online-Learning

Abstract:Based on the conceptualisation of the 21st Century Competencies Framework from the Center for Curriculum Redesign (CCR) we developed an online program to enable school-age students to increase their level on several social-emotional competencies. BE organized is a program that aims to help students to better organize themselves to be more efficient in today's and tomorrow's world. To do so, 12 individual sessions were designed to develop 4 out of the twelve 21st century competencies: Critical Thinking, Mindfulness, Resilience and Metacognition; collective sessions (action lab) to develop others such as Creativity. We used a mixed methodology, i.e., quantitative (two questionnaires) and qualitative (reflective questions) evaluation to test whether the targeted competencies have been developed during this program. Preliminary results (since it involves only a small number of participants, n = 27) partially confirm our hypotheses. Both qualitative and quantitative data show a development of critical thinking; the cross-sectional results are more mixed for the other three targeted competencies. Moreover, some other competencies, such as Creativity and Growth Mindset, seem to be developed during this program. However, it is difficult to determine whether it is the group and/or individual sessions that are responsible for these non-targeted competencies development. These results will be discussed in relation to the youth literature on 21st century competency and the broader literature on socio-emotional learning (SEL) and/or emotional intelligence (EI).

Abstract:The study examined the relationships among emotional and meta-emotional intelligence, well-being, and sociometric status in 105 pre-adolescents. Emotional and meta-emotional intelligence were measured using the Intelligenza Emotiva: Abilità, Credenze e Concetto di Sé Meta-Emotivo (IE-ACCME) test ( D’Amico, 2013 ), allowing to measure ability emotional intelligence (EI), emotional self-concept, meta-emotional knowledge, meta-emotional ability in self-evaluation, and meta-emotional beliefs. Meta-emotional dimensions refer to the awareness of individuals about their emotional abilities and to their beliefs about the functioning of emotions in everyday life. Eudemonic well-being and sociometric status were, respectively, measured using the well-known Psychological Well-Being (PWB) scale by Ryff’s (1989) and registering the levels of acceptance/rejection from peers ( Moreno, 1960 ). Results demonstrated that: pre-adolescents’ meta-emotional beliefs are positively associated to eudemonic well-being: pre-adolescents with higher levels of ability EI, meta-emotional knowledge and meta-emotional self-evaluation are more accepted by others while those that overestimate their emotional abilities are more refused by peers. These results evidence that meta-emotional variables may play a crucial role in well-being and sociometric status, encouraging future studies on this issue.

Abstract:Student engagement research in university students has been scarce, despite its major positive role on performance, degree completion and mental health. Social and emotional competencies, which are currently called twenty-first-century skills, exert some impact on student engagement in youth. Since engagement is cultural-sensitive, individual (social and emotional competencies) and cross-cultural (human developmental index and unemployment rate) characteristics were examined in association with student engagement in youth. This study included 2,092 participants from nine countries/regions, aged between 17 and 27 years ( M = 21.52, SD = 2.27), mostly cisgender woman ( n = 1,035, 68.7%) and undergraduate ( n = 1,401, 96.2%). Data were collected using a cross-sectional online survey that included the Student Engagement Scale, the Emotional Skills and Competence Questionnaire, and the prosocial behaviour/resources subscale of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. Multilevel-models showed that social and emotional competencies were relevant predictors of student engagement independently of the country-level variables. Moreover, student engagement varied with country/region human development and unemployment rate, with students from higher developed countries/regions and lowered unemployment reporting lower engagement. This study reinforces the need to implement evidence-based social and emotional learning programmes in universities worldwide, as well as public policies that can influence engagement and protect youth.

Study of Factors Associated with the Development of Emotional Intelligence and Resilience in University Students

Abstract:Future educational professionals should possess both the academic and personal skills needed for resilience. These future professionals will face difficult situations, and the development of skills such as resilience is an important part of their training. The primary objective of this research paper is to study and analyze the links between the emotional intelligence, resilience, and personalities of undergraduates studying for different degrees in educational sciences. A quantitative analysis was performed with a non-experimental, descriptive, comparative, and correlational design. The sample results show above-average levels in all three dimensions, with resilience exhibiting the highest values. Regarding the influence of gender, males presented a higher level of resilience than females, while females tended to exhibit higher levels of spirituality. University students who studied physical activity and sport sciences were found to be more resilient and to have higher weighted emotional intelligence scores than students with other educational science degrees. Emotional clarity and repair corresponded directly with the subjects' age. Emotional intelligence was positively correlated with repair, highlighting this variable as fundamental to resilience.

Abstract:Socio-emotional education is sometimes referred to as the missing part that links academic knowledge to success in school, family, community, workplace, and life. Emotion intelligence is basically a construct that has gained rather great interest nowadays, especially its influence on interpersonal relationships by contributing to optimal social functioning. Recent events both in the country and in the world show how dangerous it is when children do not acquire a solid moral foundation in acquiring knowledge. Meanwhile, socio-emotional education linked to academic teaching helps to solve this issue. Recently, there has been more and more discussions about socio-emotional education and its positive impact on children’s psychological health. Socio-emotional abilities (so-called “emotional intelligence”, “social intelligence”) are the abilities to work together with others, to learn productively, to play the most important roles in the family, community, workplace. Success not only in school but also in later life phases accompanies those students who: a) realistically evaluates oneself and one’s possibilities (self-awareness); b) properly manages their feelings and controls their behavior (self-control); c) accurately interprets the signs of the social environment (social awareness); d) effectively resolves interpersonal conflicts (communication skills); e) makes good decisions in the face of day-to-day difficulties (responsible decision making). Therefore, this paper discusses on how to identify the knowledge and skills of students in socio-emotional education and at the same time to identify certain areas where some gaps still exist.

Abstract:The aim of this study is to analyze the significance of such competence as "emotional intelligence" in training medical students at higher (master) medical education level, particularly thought the delievery certain disciplines. Emotional intelligence refers to the ability to recognize and manage one's own and others' emotions. Analytical studies have shown that emotional intelligence ranks as the third most important personality trait, following intelligence and conscientiousness, in determining human activity. Acquiring modern knowledge about emotional intelligence is crucial for individuals engaged in activities involving interpersonal interaction, especially for professions where individuals influence others, such as teachers-students behavior in higher education settings. The influence of a teacher on the emotional well-being of students is paramount. Communicating in the medical profession is essential, and guiding students' emotions positively is vital for enhancing their motivation to learn. Positive emotions conveyed through facial expressions, body language, and tone of voice can steer the educational process toward constructive outcomes. It is well-known that a good doctor possesses the ability to make patients feel better simply through conversation. These exceptional doctors often possess or consciously develop emotional intelligence as a character trait. Educational efforts aimed at fostering and developing emotional intelligence in future specialists are therefore crucial. Thus, modern higher education teachers must comprehend and deeply grasp the concept of emotional intelligence, being prepared to engage with students on an emotional level. Conclusion. Societal awareness of the current state of scientific understanding regarding emotional intelligence can significantly impact various aspects of society, from individual collectives to interstate relations. Faculty across disciplines should acquire knowledge about emotional intelligence to effectively carry out their teaching responsibilities. Medical students should acquire knowledge, skills, and abilities related to emotional intelligence to fulfill their professional duties successfully in the future.
Emotional Competence of Early Childhood Educators and Child Socio-Emotional Wellbeing

Abstract:Background: Early childhood educators are attachment figures for babies and play an important role in emotion socialization. This study aims to analyze the role of educators as emotional socializers and its relationship with infants' social competence and attachment security, considering various characteristics of educators (age, years of experience, level of knowledge of development and parenting) and the context (day-care center-family communication). Methods: 563 infants attending day-care centers (age: M = 25.98 months SD = 5.41) and their 223 early childhood educators (age: M = 42.61 SD = 11.02) took part in this study. The educators completed: CEESQ-Crèche Educator Emotional Style Questionnaire, Information Sources Questionnaire, two sub-scales of KIDI-Knowledge of Infant Development Inventory, QRS-F-Questionnaire on the Relationship between Services and Families, QPI-Questionnaire on Peer Interactions, and AQS-Attachment-Q-Sort. Results: Results showed that the educator's coaching style has a relationship with attachment security and social skills and is positively correlated with the educators' emotional self-efficacy and with the level of communication between day-care centers and families, while the correlation with knowledge of parenting is weak. Conclusions: These findings highlight the importance of enhancing not only educators' knowledge about educative strategies, but above all their emotional competence to promote children adaptation to day-care centers.

Abstract:Background: This study aimed to investigate sleep habits and examine the relationship between sleep quality and its potential predictors, namely Emotional Intelligence (EI) and perceived health status. Methods: The present cross-sectional study was conducted between February 13 and February 28, 2023, at the "Magna Græcia" University of Catanzaro, in the Southern part of Italy. The study involved undergraduate students who were 18 years or older, proficient in the Italian language, and with no restrictions on the major attended. They completed a self-administered survey on socio-demographic information, health status, sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index-PSQI), EI, and perceived health status. Results: The majority of the sample (59.6%) was enrolled in medical or life science majors. The results showed a high prevalence of poor sleep quality and sleep latency was identified as the most affected aspect of it. The female gender and the self-perceived health status were the strongest predictors of poor sleep quality. Poor sleepers showed lower emotional clarity, emotional repair, and total EI scores. Moreover, as age increased, the odds of being classified as a poor sleeper increased by 7%. Conclusion: The survey highlights that poor sleep health is still a significant issue and empowering individuals to make proactive decisions to adopt healthy lifestyles in the early phase of life is of paramount importance. The study exhibited the interesting role of EI in influencing sleep quality, highlighting that when emotional events are insufficiently regulated, it may result in sleep disturbances. Therefore, the promotion of sleep quality requires an integrated yet innovative approach including emotion regulation.

Abstract:The main aim of the current study was to investigate the role of trait emotional intelligence (TEI) in preventing students’ school burnout directly and indirectly via anxiety and academic resilience. The data were derived from a sample of 1235 high school students (962 females and 273 males), ranging in age between 13 and 17 years (mean = 15.46; stand deviation = 1.22). Structural equation modelling revealed a strong indirect effect of TEI on school burnout, mediated via anxiety and resilience. Overall, students with high TEI were less likely to experience school anxiety and more likely to exhibit resilience which, in turn, reduced school burnout risk. Findings are discussed with reference to the wider role of TEI in educational contexts and highlight the need and potential for scientifically driven interventions to enhance emotional adjustment at school and in life, more generally.
