Abstract:Class F South African coal fly ash was used as a precursor for the synthesis of zeolite A via complete microwave irradiation. To attain optimal conditions for the synthesis of zeolite A with minimum impurities, the microwave synthesis time, irradiation power, and Si/Al ratio were varied. Sodalite with fly ash phases were obtained when the Si/Al ratio in the coal fly ash was not adjusted and when the microwave irradiated coal fly ash slurry was used instead of the extract solution. Increased microwave irradiation time power and time favored the crystallization of zeolite A phase due to sufficient energy needed to ensure the dissolution of Al and Si from coal fly ash. A Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area of 29.54 m<sup>2</sup>/g and a cation exchange capacity of 3.10 mequiv/g were achieved for zeolite A, suggesting its potential application as an adsorbent and cation exchange material for environmental remediation. Complete microwave irradiation offers a greener approach toward zeolite synthesis from coal fly ash compared to conventional hydrothermal and fusion methods that consume a lot of energy and require longer reaction times.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Synthesis of High-Quality NaP1 Zeolite from Municipal Solid Waste Incineration Fly Ash by Microwave-Assisted Hydrothermal Method and Its Adsorption Capacity.

Abstract:The Si and Al in municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWI FA) can be utilized for zeolite fabrication, which can improve the application value of the products. This study focuses on the fabrication of zeolite from MSWI FA by microwave-assisted hydrothermal (MH) treatment. The effects of magnetic stirring time, Na2SiO3 dosage, MH time, and NaOH solution concentration on the crystallization of zeolite Na\\P1 from MSWI FA are systematically analyzed. The synthetic products are analyzed through spectroscopic and mineralogical methods. The results show that zeolite Na\\P1 with high crystallinity (51.68%) can be fabricated by magnetic stirring and MH treatment, and the cation exchange capacity (CEC) of the product can reach a value of 2.58 meq/g, which is approximately 133 times that of the CEC of MSWI FA. The Si/Al ratio plays a decisive role in the zeolite Na\\P1 synthesis, and a Na2SiO3 dosage of 30 wt% is adopted for zeolite Na\\P1 fabrication. A NaOH concentration of 1 M is sufficient for zeolite Na\\P1 synthesis. Additionally, the zeolite Na\\P1 content is found to obviously increase with increasing MH time from 0.5 h to 2 h. To demonstrate the feasibility of the method provided in this study, the optimal experimental condition is employed for various MSWI FAs, and zeolite Na\\P1 and analcime are fabricated successfully. The leachability of heavy metals for the synthetic products was evaluated, which met the requirements for pollution control. The BET surface area and total pore volume of zeolite Na\\P1 fabricated at optimal condition are 61.42 m(2)/g and 0.44 cm(3)/g, respectively. The adsorption capacity of zeolite Na\\P1 for Cu2+ ion and methylene blue are determined to be 84.65 mg/g and 84.55 mg/g, respectively, indicating zeolite Na\\P1 is a potential adsorbent for cation ion and dyes. This study provides an environmentally friendly scheme for the utilization of MSWI FA.

Abstract:The disposal of hazardous municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash is a challenge nowadays. Recently, the re-utilization of MSWI fly ash by converting it to useful zeolite-containing materials has attracted attention. However, the zeolitic products fabricated from MSWI fly ash are usually of low quality and rarely reported to be applied for photocatalysis. In this study, valuable zeolites (e.g., NaP1) are synthesized from MSWI fly ash via a modified microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. The key parameters for the hydrothermal method including temperature, duration, the amount of additive, and water volume, are investigated and optimized. Specifically, increasing the hydrothermal temperature can promote the synthesis of zeolitic materials; a relatively long hy-drothermal duration is essential to accomplish the assembly of zeolites; the addition of Na2SiO3 can increase the precursor for the fabrication of zeolites; the water volume makes little influence on the crystal style of products. Eventually, the hydrothermal condition of 180 degrees C, 1 h, 0.5 g Na2SiO3, and 10 mL water is suggested based on the energy consumption and the quality of zeolites. The product containing zeolite NaP1 from such a condition is further applied to degrade methylene blue by photocatalysis. The removal rate has reached 96% within 12 h, which dramatically surpasses that of the raw fly ash (38%). Such excellent photocatalytic performance is attributed to the 10-fold increased surface area (24.864 m2 g-1) and active metal elements embedding in the zeolite structures.
Microwave and Ultrasound Assisted Zeolitization of Coal Fly Ash

Abstract:Coal fly ash (CFA) is a major bi-product of coal fired power plants and is a liability for coal power industry. Coal fly ash has been accumulating rapidly around the globe and has been known to be accident prone, resulting in $1.65 billion in clean-up costs and fines. Given the environmental damage CFA is capable of causing, it is a great interest for scientists to recycle this material. Utilization of novel energy such as microwave and ultrasound has been of research interest for the zeolitization of coal fly ash. This research produced zeolites from CFA utilizing microwave and ultrasound power. Single mode microwave which significantly decreases was utilized to produce zeolite with 300 W power in 30 min. The amount of irradiation was also related to zeolite the growth of crystals and phase purity. Ultrasound assisted zeolitization resulted in single phase zeolite-A crystals with high crystallinity and smaller crystal sizes at 85°C compared to 95°C with conventional synthesis. Ultrasound probe was shown to produce the results with only 1/10 th of energy as previously reported works. The Recycling of waste stream for zeolitization process was also investigated this can contribute to lower the financial costs of zeolite production. A novel design of a microwave reactor is introduced in this work that utilizes the microwave energy efficiently this design can result in cost savings in the production of zeolites through microwave energy. It is a first step in industrializing the zeolitization of CFA utilizing microwave energy which can result in a cleaner coal energy in world where it is a significant source of power generation and can offer the option of using CFA waste accumulated decreasing the likelihood of future accidents causing environmental damages and legal liabilities. This work has shown that microwave and ultrasound irradiation can significantly decrease the time of zeolitization process. Single mode microwave has been shown to be much more effective in producing the same results at a third of the power rating for a multimode microwave. Similarly, utilization of ultrasound probe produced a single phase zeolite at a tenth of power reported using ultrasound bath. Ultrasound assisted zeolitization was observed at 85°C, about 10°C lower than conventional synthesis. Waste stream recycling was shown to be effective for a couple of runs indicating that waste from zeolitization can be reduced. A

Abstract:High value-added NaHS zeolite was prepared using the microwave-assisted alkali fusion hydrothermal method from industrial solid waste coal fly ash as raw material without adding silicon and aluminum sources. The effect of mass ratio of alkali to coal fly ash, crystallization temperature, and crystallization time on the preparation of NaHS zeolite was investigated. The NaHS zeolite was characterized using XRD, SEM, BET, and FT-IR. The experimental results showed that the NaHS zeolite with complete crystal structure could be synthesized at m (sodium hydroxide): m (coal fly ash) = 2:1, crystallization temperature of 140°C, and crystallization time of 48 h. The prepared HS zeolite had high purity, complete crystal structure, and uniform grain size (2 μm). The NaHS zeolite was beneficial for CO 2 adsorption properties with 110.9 cm 3 /g at 25°C.

Abstract:Coal fly ash (CFA) presents environmental challenges due to its abundance from coal combustion and difficult disposal issues, necessitating effective utilization strategies. This study explored the potential of combined microwave heating and silicon fusion as a pretreatment method for CFA, followed by zeolite molecular sieve synthesis. The aim is to enhance CFA activation, facilitate mullite transformation, and then extract valuable elements like silicon and aluminum. The synthesized zeolite molecular sieves exhibited a diamond-like structure with rich pore formations. XRD and XRF analysis identified that the predominant crystalline phases of the molecular sieves were Na 6 Al 6 Si 10 O 32 (approximately 95.3%) with minor Na 3.6 Al 3.6 Si 12.4 O 32 , indicating NaP-type zeolites with a silicon-to-aluminum ratio of 1.78. In contrast, CFA's ratio was 1.24, suggesting that waste silicon powders served both as an activator and a supplementary silicon source. This innovative approach offered sustainable utilization of CFA, addressed environmental challenges, and promoted waste utilization. It exhibited tremendous potential in the environmental field with the advantages of low cost and environmental friendliness.

Abstract:Lithium zeolites with ABW framework were synthesized from coal fly ash by hydrothermal method. The effects of LiOH·H2O concentrations, hydrothermal temperatures, and reaction time on zeolites formation were investigated. LiOH·H2O acted as a strong activator and promoted the dissolution of coal fly ash. The contents of zeolites ABW phases increased at the expense of quartz and mullite in fly ash with an increase of alkaline solution concentrations. On increasing hydrothermal temperatures and time, the soluble species recrystallized and phase transformation between different zeolites was observed. Morphology evolution revealed that the zeolites developed from radiating cluster to mono‐column. Abstract:This study aims to make adsorption-capable zeolite from coal fly ash, a waste product from coal-fired power plants (CFA). When it comes to commercializing sorbent, the total cost and efficiency of the adsorbent material are critical. This work used tap water instead of distilled water (DW) to synthesis zeolite from fly ashes at 90°C crystallization temperatures. The discovery lays the door for a cost-effective but easy technique of synthesizing viable zeolitic materials for adsorption applications using waste products like coal fly ash. According to the comprehensive characterization, the support for the use of TP to make zeolites is based on its larger particle size, and lower carbon impurities. The generated zeolite was homogenous and A-type, and applied as an adsorbent to remove traces of heavy metals contaminants. During a 25-minute agitation period, the zeolites produced with TP had a greater adsorption capacity. In principle, the proposed approach permits the synthesis of low-cost, high-efficiency zeolite-based adsorbent materials for environmental remediation without the use of harmful or expensive chemicals.

Abstract:The operation of nuclear power plants requires a supply of nuclear fuel where uranium plays a substantial role as a primary fissile material. Its extraction from U-bearing minerals and handling may cause a leakage of heavily toxic radioactive pollution, which ends up in water bodies and soil. Therefore, tackling U-contaminated water is crucial to preserve water integrity and quality. Zeolites are known as profound ion exchangers with great affinity towards cationic species present in polluted waters. Various zeolite synthesis routes have made this group of aluminosilicates even more promising to be applied as water purification materials. Here, the synthetic gismondite, faujasite, and Linde type-A zeolites from coal fly-ash were synthesized via tailored, coupled fusion-hydrothermal method and applied to remove aqueous uranium (primarily as 238U) under varying pH, time (sorption kinetics), and initial U concentrations (sorption isotherms). The maximum U uptake was observed for Na–P1 (GIS) zeolite, which equals 48.72 mg U/g, the highest reported value on maximum U adsorption capacity for zeolitic materials. The U adsorption kinetics showed that equilibrium is reached after approximately 3 h of adsorption and that the removal process follows a Freundlich isothermal model for all zeolites, thus preferential adsorption onto heterogeneous surfaces. Advanced spectroscopic studies, including laboratory-scale X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy with synchrotron light X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure in High Energy Resolution Fluorescence Detection mode, revealed that at acidic pH, predominantly an ion exchange between Na+ ions with hexavalent uranyl species takes place. In contrast, in the neutral pH region, the U is immobilized via precipitation in the form of μm-scale mineral aggregates of Na-schoepite: Na[(UO2)4O2(OH)5](H2O)5↓. The outcomes of the research study has demonstrated that synthetic zeolites, obtained from industrial by-products such as coal fly-ash, can be successfully valorized to efficient U adsorbents while unveiling the insights to understand the zeolites/U interactions at the nanoscale level.

Abstract:Zeolite molecular sieves are potential adsorbents for wastewater treatment, characterized by high efficiency, simple process, easy regeneration, and low treatment cost. In this study, zeolite A molecular sieves were prepared using coal fly ash (CFA), which is an effective method for the utilization of CFA. The results showed that the CFA-based zeolite molecular sieves synthesized under optimized conditions exhibited excellent adsorption and removal rates (> 40%) for ammonia–nitrogen in wastewater of different concentrations and properties. The analysis of adsorption kinetics revealed that the adsorption process followed pseudo-second-order kinetics model, indicating that the adsorption of ammonia–nitrogen on zeolite is primarily controlled by chemisorption rather than physisorption. The adsorption process can be divided into two stages, with a higher adsorption rate and a smaller diffusion boundary layer thickness in the first stage, and a lower adsorption rate and an increased diffusion boundary layer thickness in the second stage. This indicates that as the adsorption proceeds, the internal diffusion resistance within the particles gradually increases, leading to a decrease in the adsorption rate until reaching equilibrium, where both the diffusion and adsorption become stable. The adsorption isotherms of ammonia–nitrogen on zeolite A conformed to the assumptions of the Langmuir model, suggesting that the adsorption mechanism primarily involves uniform monolayer adsorption on the surface without intermolecular interactions.

Abstract:Due to the widely application of waste incineration in China, considerable waste ash were generated every year. The treatment and utilization of municipal solid waste fly ash (MSWFA) remains a challenging work. Unlike coal fly ash (CFA) that can be used to synthesize different types of zeolite-like materials, MSWFA is lacking of silicon and aluminum which are essential to the synthesis of zeolites. The aim of this research was to investigate the possibility of zeolite synthesis using MSWFA by adding silicon and aluminum sources from various solid waste to achieve recycling utilization. The raw materials were treated with alkaline using hydrothermal and fusion methods. The synthetic products were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analyses (TGA). The results indicated that the products obtained from both hydrothermal and fusion treatment demonstrated the characteristics of zeolite-like materials. Compared to the raw materials, the synthetic products showed higher cation exchange capacity of 1.00 meq/g, implying the potential application by converting MSWFA into useful materials.
Study on ammonia removal by artificial zeolites synthesized from optimized coal fly ash

Abstract:Physiochemical characteristics of seven coal fly ash(CFA),such as element composition,crystalline phases,specific surface area,loss on ignition,cation exchange capacity(CEC),pH,were determined.Extraction of Si and Al by fusion method was also conducted to evaluate the potential availability of each coal fly ash as raw materials for zeolite synthesis.L9(34) orthogonal experiments were designed to investigate the influence of four key factors,such as dosage of NaOH,fusion temperature,concentration and volume of NaOH solution.CFAs collected by wet dust collection are generally more suitable as raw material for zeolite syhthesis than those captured from flue gas by electrostatic precipitation system.Useful zeolites products,such as zeolite A,zeolite X,zeolite P,were synthesized from the extracts by hydrothermal treatment.Concentration and volume of NaOH had remarkable influence on extraction while effect of dosage of added NaOH and temperature in fusion stage were not notable.SiO2/Al2O3 molar ratio influenced the type,production and CEC of zeolite products.The CEC of zeolite products was 140~324 meq/100 g,and over 50%~75% ammonium can be instantly removed from aqueous solution in first 5 minutes with addition dose 1 g/250 mL.

Abstract:The article presents studies of the influence of parameters of synthesis modes and alkali concentration on the synthesis of zeolite materials from coal fly ash (CFA). The purpose of the study was to synthesise zeolite materials from CFA using the method of alkaline fusion and to determine the susceptibility of selected heavy-metal ions to removal from solutions in an ion exchange process on a selected mesoporous zeolite. It was found that the crystalline phase of sodalite was dominated in all of the samples synthesized. The specific surface area (SBET) of the samples was evaluated using the standard Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) method using N2 sorption. Crystalline zeolite materials have been used to study the efficiency of removing heavy metals from aqueous solutions of Ni2+, Cd2+ and Pb2+. The adsorption data were analyzed using the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm model. When comparing the estimated coefficient of determination (r2), it was noticed that the sorption data are more accurately described by the Langmuir isotherm and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The results of metal adsorption experiments suggest that the synthesized zeolite material has great potential to be used as an inexpensive and alternative source in the production of adsorbents.

Abstract:Fly ash is an incineration byproduct of thermal power plants. Due to the complex composition of fly ash, improper disposal will seriously harm the ecological environment. Therefore, how to effectively use fly ash to safely and environmentally replace landfills is a worldwide concern. Considering the high silicon and aluminum contents in fly ash, it has the potential to synthesize zeolite, which has a wide range of applications in sewage treatment, gas adsorption, etc. Therefore, the synthesis of zeolites from fly ash is consistent with the theme of sustainable development. The synthesis mechanism of zeolite, various synthetic methods of zeolite from fly ash and their advantages and disadvantages was introduced in detail. In addition, combined with the current research hotspots, the application of synthetic zeolite from fly ash in the fields of sewage treatment and gas adsorption was introduced. Finally, the future development prospects and research directions of synthetic zeolite from fly ash to improve the utilization rate of fly ash were considered.

Abstract:<p>Power generation in South Africa relies heavily on the combustion of coal and during this process, coal fly ash (CFA) is generated as by-product, which raises several environmental issues. The transformation of CFA into a value added zeolite product is a potential beneficial way to manage and reduce the negative environmental impact of the waste. The present study describes suitable formulations of the synthesis of BEA zeolite from South Africa CFA via an indirect hydrothermal process without the addition of an external silica or aluminium source. Herein, the Si/Al ratio of the nanosilica extract significantly increased from 11 to 48, 53 or 61 depending applied conditions, thus elucidating that the major component in the extract is 92% silica, with a high purity of 94%. A pure phase BEA zeolite was obtained after the hydrothermal crystallisation of the synthesis precursor with Si/Al ratio of 53 or 61 at 140 °C for 24, 48 or 72 h. The BEA zeolites are micron-sized crystals with high thermal framework stability, high surface area and contained mainly framework but some extra framework Al acid sites. Under hot liquid phase treatment, the BEA zeolite framework maintained structural integrity with no phase transformation at elevated treatment duration and temperature.</p>

A synthetic zeolite was prepared from coal fly ash by one-step hydrothermal synthesis and applied for phosphorus adsorption from industrial wastewater (∼8,000 mg-P/L), and its adsorption characteristics and performance were studied. The results indicated that the product was a well-crystallized Na-P1 zeolite with typical morphology of plate- and rod-shaped crystals. Compared with the original fly ash, the specific surface area and average pore volume of the synthetic zeolite were nine and six times larger than the fly ash, reaching 43.817 m 2 /g and 0.122 cm 3 /g. The results from phosphorus adsorption onto the synthetic zeolite showed that the synthetic zeolite had good phosphorus adsorption properties. The adsorption process highly conformed to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model with the regression coefficient R 2 of 0.998. Phosphorus adsorption on the synthetic zeolite was fitted to the Langmuir monolayer adsorption model, and the regression coefficient R 2 was 0.989. The maximum phosphorus adsorption capacity was 84.4 mg-P/g-zeolite.

Removal of Ammonium from Swine Wastewater Using Synthesized Zeolite from Fly Ash

Abstract:Synthetic zeolites with pretreated fly ash as a raw material were used to remove ammonium from wastewater using a hydrothermal method in this study. Two pretreatment methods of fly ash were used to compare the ammonium removal of zeolites: water-washing and pickling. In addition, the effects of several factors including the time, temperature, pH, adsorbent dosage, coexisting ions and initial concentration were investigated to gain insight into the adsorption rate, behavior and mechanism of synthetic zeolites for ammonium. N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms showed that the synthetic zeolite was a mesoporous material with a higher specific area (13.05 m2/g) than the values for raw fly ash (0.34 m2/g). The X-ray diffraction result suggested that the synthetic products mainly belonged to zeolite P and Y. The adsorption kinetic data fitted well with a pseudo-second-order model. The maximum ammonium adsorption capacity was 32.16 mg/g. The synthetic zeolites were also applied to adsorb the ammonium from real swine wastewater. The ammonium removal efficiencies in raw swine wastewater and effluent from the biochemical unit were 64.34% and 79.61%, respectively, which indicated that the synthetic zeolites have a good application for real ammonium wastewater.

Abstract:The zeolite Li-ABW was synthesized by fusion method using fly ash as raw material. It comprised alkaline fusion followed by hydrothermal treatment in LiOH·H2O medium. Crystallinity of zeolite as high as 97.8% was attained under the following conditions: LiOH·H2O concentration, 3M; hydrothermal temperature, 180°C; the corresponding aging time, 12h. The content of Li-ABW increased at the expense of lithium aluminum silicate or quartz with an increase of LiOH·H2O concentration. With increasing hydrothermal temperature and aging time, the soluble species re-crystallized and crystalline phase transformation between different zeolites was observed. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation revealed that the obtained zeolite Li-ABW was a rod-like crystal. The pore size distribution curve indicated the presence of mesopores.

Abstract:Indirect carbonation, a technology to store CO 2 and produce stable CaCO 3 and MgCO 3 , involves elution of Ca and Mg from industrial waste and subsequent carbonation. Although substantial residual waste is generated after the elution of Ca and Mg, its recycling attributes have not been adequately scrutinized. The residual waste has lower Ca and Mg contents and higher Si and Al contents than those of the raw material (i.e., industrial waste). This study involves the hydrothermal synthesis of zeolite-P using residual waste from indirect carbonation, conducted at both 100 and 180 °C. The properties of these zeolites are compared with those synthesized from coal fly ash (CFA). The synthesized zeolites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscope, thermogravimetric analyzer, and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET). A high zeolite conversion efficiency was achieved through a hydrothermal reaction (up to 87%), even though Si and Al were not added to the residual waste. Additionally, the cation exchange capacity and BET specific surface area of the synthesized zeolites were high (200 cmol kg −1 and 73 m 2 g −1 , respectively). These findings highlight the possibility of synthesizing zeolites using the residual waste from indirect carbonation as an alternative to conventional zeolite synthesis using industrial waste such as CFA. The synthesized zeolite-P is expected to be effective in wastewater treatment, detergent manufacturing, and water softening.
