Abstract:Structural radar absorption material possesses both wave absorption and load bearing functions.Microwave-absorbing composite sandwich structures have been widely used because of its light weight,high strength as well as perfect property of electromagnetic wave absorption.The finite-difference time-domain(FDTD) method has been applied to the numerical simulation of electromagnetic scattering for equilateral-hexagon honeycomb sandwich structure and corrugated plate sandwich structure radar absorbing materials.RCS(radar cross section) values of two types of structural wave absorbing materials as well as complete metal structure,which have the same dimension,have been computed by means of numerical simulation.Moreover,electromagnetic scattering characteristics of different shape honeycomb and corrugated plate structures are also studied respectively.Finally,stealth performance curves of honeycomb structure are obtained with respect to different incident frequencies(X-band).
High-performance dendritic metamaterial absorber for broadband and near-meter wave radar

Abstract:Absorbing materials in ultra-high frequency (UHF) band has constantly been a major challenge. The size of the absorber in UHF band is large, whereas the resonant frequency band is narrow. According to Rozanov's theory, two kinds of composite metamaterial absorbers are designed to realize the requirements of low-frequency broadband metamaterial microwave absorber: the magnetic-metamaterial composite absorber1 (MA1) and the dielectric-metamaterial composite absorber 2 (MA2). In the range of approximately 300-1000MHz, both absorbers achieve absorption of over 90% and feature good adaptability to the incident angle of the incident wave. The absorbers also present good absorption rate of over 80% in the range of 0-45 degree. Processing samples of indium tin oxide (ITO) resistance film and polymethacrylimide (PMI) foam board feature simple preparation and low cost, and the most important thing is to consider the weight problem, which features certain advantages in terms of use.

Abstract:The development of technologies that can rival the devices used by other countries in the defense industry, and more importantly, can disable their devices is becoming more critical. Radar absorber materials (RAM) make the detection of the material on the radar difficult because of absorbing a part of the electromagnetic wave sent by the radar. Considering that radar is one of the most important technologies used in the defense industry, the production of non-radar materials is vital for all countries in the world. Covering a gun platform with radar absorber material reduces the radar-cross-sectional area (RCA) value representing the visibility of that platform on the radar. This review aims to present the electromagnetic principles and developed Radar Absorbent Materials (RAM) during decades from the 1960s. The frequency range 8-12 GHz in the electromagnetic spectrum is named the microwave region and used in airport radar applications. Revised basis of electromagnetic theory and defined by a variety of absorbent materials and some design classification types and techniques are described in this article.

Abstract:A kind of radar-absorbing material ( RAM ) based on metamaterial, which contains resistive patches, dielectric substrate and metal backing, is designed. The reflectivity of the RAM is calculated using the finite difference time-domain method ( FDTD ) and optimized by genetic algorithm( GA ). Then RAMs with a reflectivity bandwidth of 8-18 GHz below 10 dB is obtained. Moreover, its thickness is only 3mm. To confirm the design results, the RAM is prepared by fabricating a hollow quartz fibre reinforced epoxy resin substrate through using hand lay-up process and making the resistive patches by screen painting. The reflectivity of the absorber is measured, showing that the experimental result is consistent with the design value.

Abstract:In this study, production of metamaterial-based polymer matrix composites was carried out for radar absorbing material. Metamaterial-based absorbers can be used in the stealth technology due to their negative index of refraction, broadband electromagnetic absorption. Electromagnetic metamaterials show negative magnetic permeability and electric permittivity. Splits on the loops (rings) can create high capacitances and can decrease the resonance frequency. Usually, split-ring loops are fabricated by coating thin conductive and nonmagnetic copper paths on a thin polymer. Thick carbon nanotube split-ring loops are embedded into polymer matrix instead of coating. This can have high radar absorption capacity, low density, and high strength. Positive moulds were fabricated by additive manufacturing. Replica method was used for the fabrication of metamaterial-based composites. Absorbance, conductivity, and mechanical properties were investigated. Distribution of the iron powders is uniform in the matrix. Increasing iron powder content increased the Young's modulus of the composites. Iron addition increased the hardness and slightly decreased the impact energy. Increasing carbon nanotube content of the matrix increased the hardness and impact energy. Increasing carbon nanotube contents increased the insertion loss and absorbance. Maximum absorbance and insertion loss values were in the circular split-ring design. Insertion loss and absorbance values of the re-entrant and star shaped designs were lower.

Abstract:With the development of radar (Radio Detection and Ranging) systems, the study of materials with the capability to block and reduce the reflected electromagnetic radiation to avoid or confuse detection systems, or to protect sensitive devices and living beings exposed to electromagnetic radiation, has become a topic of great interest. This review describes some concepts of the electromagnetic spectrum, radar systems, frequency bands, and radar applications based on their operating frequency, the radar cross-section, and the mechanisms to reduce it, as well as the microwave absorption theory. Furthermore, different carbon-based materials such as carbon black, carbon fibers, nanotubes, graphene, graphene oxide, reduced graphene oxide, and its composites have been used as electromagnetic absorber materials due to their remarkable intrinsic characteristics as lightweight, flexibility, and suitable electric and magnetic properties, are described. This review also explains the principal mechanisms by which these materials can attenuate the radiation. The review is concluded with a summary of the perspectives and challenges for future investigation of carbon-based materials and his electromagnetic characterization for radar signals absorption, interference protection and human security.
Design and Characterization of Radar Absorbing Structure Based on Gradient-Refractive-index Metamaterials

Abstract:A gradient-refractive-index radar absorbing structure(GRINRAS) for stealth aircraft is proposed in this paper. It is a layered shell composed of a gradient-refractive-index (GRIN) refractor, an absorber and a reflector. The GRIN refractor consists of the isotropic non-resonant woodpile metamaterials, which was designed according to the permittivity distribution equation of the electromagnetic(EM) black hole to bend and match the waves from the air to the radar absorbing structure. The absorber dissipates the EM waves and transforms them into the heat energy. The reflector reflects the EM waves to the absorber and prevents them from entering the inner space of the structure. A ring and a board GRINRAS were designed, and then fabricated by the three-dimensional (3D) printing process of stereolithography (SL). Simulation and experimental results show that the GRINRASes can control the wave propagation and their absorption capacity is better than -10 dB in the broadband of 12-18 GHz. The GRIN refractor and the absorber have almost equal contributions to the absorption capability. This is the first radar absorbing composite structure composed of the gradient 3D metamaterials. It demonstrates the feasibility of using the metamaterials and 3D printing technology in the innovative radar absorbing structure (RAS) of the stealth aircraft. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:In this letter, we report on the design, fabrication, measurement, and analysis of a tunable low-frequency and broadband radar absorber applied in the frequency range of 1-12 GHz. Numerical simulations indicate that absorbers based on the resistor-loaded frequency selective surface (FSS) can be resistively tuned to give a broadband absorption of exceeding -10 dB between 1 and 12 GHz. Moreover, superior absorbing performance can be achieved by introducing capacitance paralleled with resistance. Measurement results show that the radar absorber, by way of configuration with active FSS (AFSS) controlled by p-i-n diodes, can be tuned to provide a continuously variable reflectivity level of less than -10 dB from 2 to 11.3 GHz with varied bias voltages. Furthermore, experimental results have good agreement with simulations.

Abstract:The existing metamaterial absorber cannot simultaneously achieve wide bandwidth, light thickness, flexibility, and transparency in the radar frequency band. To address that problem, a flexible transparent and ultra-broadband metamaterial absorber is designed, fabricated, and tested in the present study. The metamaterial absorber is built as a sandwich structure with an indium tin oxide (ITO) top layer surface resonance unit, an air dielectric layer, and an ITO grounding layer. The absorptivity of the metamaterial absorber exceeds 90% in the frequency range of 3.7–102 GHz, and it can effectively cover the S, C, X, Ku, K, Ka, U, V, and W bands of the radar working band. The absorptivity exceeds 80% when the incident angle changes in the range of 0–45° under TE polarized mode and exceeds 90% when the incident angle changes in the range of 0–60° under TM polarized mode, which indicates that the metamaterial absorber has good incident angle stability and insensitive to polarization. Moreover, radar stealth properties in the 2–40 GHz frequency band are verified after measuring. The light transmittance of the metamaterial absorber exceeds 80%, ensuring that the solar cell array and aircraft window receive light normally. Furthermore, the thickness of the metamaterial absorber is merely 1.02 mm, which has good flexibility and can perfectly fit the object's surface. These excellent performances demonstrate that the metamaterial absorber has wide application potential in the fields of radar stealth and micro satellite stealth.

Abstract:There is some kind of materials widely used in microwave engineering that known as radar absorbers. Whether it is the aircraft coating, the anechoic chamber interior or waveguide feed load. Anechoic chamber absorbers are typically characterized by reflectivity at normal incidence of electromagnetic wave. The study of the angular dependence of reflectivity for several absorber samples and the appraising of the impact of their combination on the anechoic chamber performance are the main aims of present work. For this purpose the experimental studies were carried out in an antenna measuring and computing complex based on the anechoic chamber. Obtained results may be useful in the anechoic chamber design and construction stages as well as the modernization of existing ones. It can also be used for modelling of the internal electromagnetic field distribution of indoor field test ranges.
Asymmetric Three-Dimensional Metamaterial Absorber for Microwave Application

Abstract:In this paper, an asymmetric three-dimensional metamaterial absorber (3D-MA) for microwave application is presented. The designed 3D-MA is composed of a hollow vertical periodic crossed mesh array. Two metal split ring resonators (SRRs) of different sizes are printed on the substrate. The asymmetric mechanism is deeply analyzed and discussed from the perspective of the equivalent circuit. The final simulation results show that the designed 3D-MA can achieve broadband absorption with absorptivity over 80% in the frequency range of 1.84-2.8 GHz and 2.9-3.72 GHz when the electromagnetic wave is incident along the z direction. However, when the electromagnetic wave is incident from the reverse side, the incoming energy is near-total reflected. The calculated results of the equivalent circuit model agree well with the electromagnetic simulation results. The designed 3D-MA has great potential applications in the field of radar asymmetric recognition, detection, and stealth.

Abstract:The iterative upgrading of the means of warfare has promoted the development of detection technology, and military activities are increasingly demanding target stealth. In this paper, a multifunctional metamaterial absorber is recommended, which simultaneously realizes the integrated stealth functions of ultra-wideband radar wave absorption, low infrared emission, and optically transparent. The structure is composed of an infrared shield (IRSL), a radar-absorbing layer (RAL), and a reflective layer (RL). Simulation results indicate that the absorption bandwidth in the radar band (1.81-20.4 GHz) is more than 90%, and the infrared emissivity is as low as 0.271 in the IR band (3-14 μm). Moreover, it has the features of flexibility, angle stability (0-45°), polarization insensitivity (0-90°), and so on. Furthermore, the electric field current distribution and equivalent circuit model of the structure are analyzed, and a 180 mm*180 mm sample is built and tested; the results show that the simulated and actual measurements are in agreement, and it is expected that such absorbers will be used in areas such as aircraft.

Abstract:<p>In this article, we present an enhanced metamaterial radar absorbing coating (MRAC) which possesses good electromagnetic absorption performance and ultra-thin thickness at high temperatures. The absorber is composed of radar EM absorbing coating and a layer of metamaterial. The metamaterial layer on the coating can enhance the absorption in two aspects. First, due to the coupling between the high permittivity coating and metamaterial layer, the impedance can match a smaller thickness better than a coating alone. Meanwhile, intense EM fields appear the surface of metamaterial pattern, which can also promote the absorption. The periodic pattern is made of special alloy which provides high temperature resistance quality. It is worth noting that the processing merely requires traditional plasma spraying, which ensures the practicability and feasibility. A 0.96 mm thick sample can achieve EM reflection loss below -5 dB at 800 °C over the whole X band. The experimental results are also consistent with the simulation, which successfully verifies the feasibility and proposes a competitive design for radar absorbing coatings (RAC).</p>

Abstract:In this paper, we present a kind of broadband absorbent material. The broadband absorbent material is designed based on topology optimization and tested. The optimizing of metamaterials with a genetic algorithm has become one of the most effective methods of designing metamaterials in recent years. An integral system with interactive simulation of MATLAB and CST Microwave Studio is developed, and the main program of genetic algorithm is written in MATLAB; with simulation and computation in CST the metamaterial is optimized by a genetic algorithm with power of global optimization. Vacuum assistant resin infusion process is a new cost-effective and high-performance process. The proposed radar absorbent material possesses a sandwich structure, which consists of transparent composite skin panel, resistive metasurface, polyurethane foam and reflective composite skin panel. The transparent composite skin panel is low-dielectric-constant glass fiber reinforced composite, which has excellent physical properties and weather resistant property. The core material is composed of low density polyurethane foam and metamaterials, which can well meet the requirements for weight reduction and the invisibility. The reflective composite skin panel is a low-resistance carbon fiber reinforced composite, which prevents the electromagnetic waves from transmitting and also provides electrical boundary conditions for metamaterial. Simulation and test results indicate that the reflectivity of the radar absorbent material is less than -12 dB in a range of 2-18 GHz. Because of the symmetrical structure design of the resistance film, the radar absorbent material is polarization-independent. We preliminarily produce a batch of radar absorbent materials and test their various performances. Such a radar absorbent material has a strong absorption and other properties such as light quality, high temperature resistance, low temperature resistance, humidity resistance and corrosion resistance. The radar absorbent material which has been widely used in the engineering field is easy to achieve the compatibility of absorption, mechanical properties and environmental performance. Compared with previous design method, the topology optimization design is simple in programming operation, good in generality, and short in design periode. The radar absorbent materials owns strong application value.

Abstract:We present a thin and broadband tunable radar absorber using active frequency selective surface (AFSS). The AFSS is composed of a patch type frequency selective surface (FSS) and a PIN diode array. We investigate the impacts of the applied voltage of the PIN diode array and the size of the absorber. Our measurements show that the reflectivity of the absorber can be dynamically adjusted by changing the bias voltages. A good absorption property is observed at the bias voltage of 5 V, with the reflectivity below -10 dB over a frequency band of 5.3-13 GHz, and the thickness is only 5.3 mm.

Abstract:This proposed work focuses on designing and evaluating planar and optimal metamaterial absorbers for radar stealth applications. The structure of the unit cell is designed using a dielectric FR4 substrate with resistive ink patterns printed on it. With the help of computational optimization using the Ansys HFSS tool, the proposed unit cell's various geometric parameters are fine-tuned to achieve outstanding results. The unit cell, which is designed with resistive ink-based lossy material printed on an FR-4 dielectric substrate, achieves a remarkable dB reduction in reflection with a 90% fractional bandwidth between 15 and 28.9 GHz under normal incidence. Additionally, the proposed structure's dual negative feature reduces reflection by dB for Both TE and TM polarized waves can be angled up to across all frequencies. The design has a fourfold rotation symmetry, which enables polarization-insensitive capabilities, enhancing its versatility. Furthermore, the unit cell's various properties, including permittivity, permeability, refractive index, and impedance plots, are analyzed to assess the design. The distribution of surface current and electric field is being investigated, which further bolsters the design's credibility. The prototype is developed with a novel unit cell structure, an assortment of unit cell structures is also fabricated to enhance its functionality further, and the results are measured and presented. The experimental results match the simulated results, indicating that the proposed metamaterial absorber is an optimal solution for radar stealth applications.
