Abstract:Lignin, the planet's most abundant renewable source of aromatic compounds, is difficult to degrade efficiently to welldefined aromatics. We developed a microwave-assisted catalytic Swern oxidation system using an easily prepared catalyst, MoO2Cl2(DMSO)(2), and DMSO as the solvent and oxidant. It demonstrated high efficiency in transforming lignin model compounds containing the units and functional groups found in native lignins. The aromatic ring substituents strongly influenced the selectivity of -ether phenolic dimer cleavage to generate sinapaldehyde and coniferaldehyde, monomers not usually produced by oxidative methods. Time-course studies on two key intermediates provided insight into the reaction pathway. Owing to the broad scope of this oxidation system and the insight gleaned with regard to its mechanism, this strategy could be adapted and applied in a general sense to the production of useful aromatic chemicals from phenolics and lignin.
Microwave-Assisted Oxidative Degradation of Lignin Model Compounds with Metal Salts

Abstract:A systematic study on microwave-assisted oxidative degradation of lignin model compounds, such as 2-phenoxy-1-phenylethanol, vanillyl alcohol, and 4-hydroxybenzyl alcohol, was performed by evaluating the catalytic activity of 14 types of metal salts. The acidity of each metal salt solution for the oxidative degradation of 2-phenoxy-1-phenylethanol, vanillyl alcohol, and 4-hydroxybenzyl alcohol under the microwave irradiation and conventional heating conditions was measured and compared. The results showed that CrCl3 and MnCl2 were the most effective for the degradation of the lignin model compounds. The acidity of metal salt is in favor of the catalytic activity for the degradation of 2-phenoxy-1-phenylethanol, vanillyl alcohol, and 4-hydroxybenzyl alcohol, and microwave irradiation is able to accelerate the degradation rate in a large scale. The possible mechanisms for the degradation of 2-phenoxy-1-phenylethanol, vanillyl alcohol, and 4-hydroxybenzyl alcohol are proposed on the basis of the product distributions.

Abstract:The effective cleavage of C-O bonds in linkages of lignin was one of the significant strategies promoting lignin valorization. Herein, the strategy of C-O bonds cleavage of lignin using metal triflate as the catalyst was developed. The carboxylic acid or alcohol could be used as the nucleophile to stabilize the reactive intermediates formed during the depolymerization of lignin, and the corresponding ester/ether compounds could be obtained. This catalytic system was suitable for the C-O bond cleavage in α-O-4 and β-O-4 linkages with excellent efficiency. Additionally, reaction conditions were optimized. The reaction mixture was detected by 1 H NMR, and no other byproducts were found. As for treated lignin samples, the cleavage of C-O bonds in linkages was determined by 2D HSQC NMR, the increased content of the phenol hydroxyl group was proved by FT-IR, and the reduced molecular weight was investigated by GPC. Furthermore, multiple phenolic compounds were detected by GC-MS in the reaction mixtures.
Efficient Lignin Depolymerization Process for Phenolic Products with Lignin-Based Catalysts and Mixed Solvents

Abstract:Due to their diverse functional groups and structural composition, carbon-based catalysts exhibit superior performance in various catalytic reaction systems, such as hydrogenolysis, hydrogenation, and oxidation. Herein, we propose an effective strategy of lignin liquid-phase depolymerization by applying the designed lignin-based carbon catalysts to produce aromatic chemicals. A series of Ni-Mo bimetallic carbon-based catalysts were synthesized to explore the effect of different preparation methods on the catalytic activity. The results demonstrate that the embedded Ni-Mo/C-WMO catalyst with multi-active sites of Ni, MoO3, and Mo2C results in a prominent catalytic effect on lignin depolymerization. The Ni-Mo/C-WMO catalyst can achieve a lignin conversion of 87.62% with a 42.25% monophenol yield in the methanol and water system. With the synergistic contribution of multiple active sites of the catalyst and the mixed-solvent system (water, methanol, and 1, 4-dioxane), a remarkably high yield of 62.95% of mono-phenolic compound was achieved at 260 degrees C and 3 MPa N2 with a reaction time of 4 h. The selectivity of 2methoxy-4-methylphenol and 2-methoxy-4-ethylphenol in liquid products was 40.85 and 36.42%, respectively. Vanillin, a typical product from lignin depolymerization reported in the literature, was further degraded to monophenol in this system. The outcomes also confirmed that the in situ hydrogen production system of methanol and water coupled with 1,4-dioxane facilitated the lignin depolymerization significantly.

Abstract:The cleavage of a lignin model compound of 2-phenoxyacetophenone (2-PAP) was studied in an anhydrous ethanol solvent. A high conversion of 2-PAP (> 99%) to the desired products (> 80% for phenol) with impressive selectivity was achieved in a stainless steel (T316SS) autoclave without any added catalyst. The stainless steel was analyzed as being effective at catalyzing the decomposition of 2-PAP because of its hydrogen transfer activity and stabilization of reaction intermediates, while anhydrous ethanol served as both a solvent and hydrogen donator. An active hydrogen-promoted reaction network was proposed to explain these results. Further investigation demonstrated that the co-catalyst, Cs2.5H0.5PMo12O40, enhanced the cleavage efficiency, which resulted in high yields of the desired products (> 98% of phenol and > 91% of acetophenone). The proposed method in this study based on the stainless steel-promoted hydrogen transfer reaction, which had the merits of a high conversion efficiency and easy handling, can be expected to develop a promising process for further transformation of lignin to valuable multi-substituted aromatics.

Abstract:The highly‐efficient utilization of lignin and its derivatives is of great importance. Phenylacetaldehyde, as an important industrial raw material, is rarely reported to be directly obtained from biomass sources via thermal catalytic transformation. In this work, we found that NiOOH catalyst could efficiently catalyze the cleavage of β‐O‐4 lignin model compound to phenylacetaldehyde and phenol in water without need of any exogenous hydrogen. The catalytic mechanism study indicates that NiOOH could catalyze the elimination of C α ‐OH to form an enol ether intermediate, which is then hydrated to phenylacetaldehyde and phenol.

Abstract:Selective C-O bond cleavage is crucial for lignin valorization. Currently, catalytic hydrogenolysis of lignin C-O bonds often requires the use of a precious metal catalyst or/and harsh conditions such as elevated temperatures and high pressures. Electrocatalytic hydrogenation presents an attractive greener alternative to the conventional catalytic processes. Herein, we establish a novel, highly selective electrochemical protocol to reductively cleave the benzylic C-O bond of the lignin model compound benzyl phenyl ether (BPE) using galvanostatic controlled electrolysis at room temperature and ambient pressure. Complete conversion of BPE to toluene and phenol in methanol was achieved in an undivided cell using Ni foam at both the anode and cathode, with yields of 97% and 30%, respectively. Using a divided cell, yields of 90% (toluene) and 84% (phenol) could be achieved using inexpensive carbon paper as cathode when Ni (II) salts were added to the cathode chamber. Notably, other divalent metal salts did not lead to product formation, suggesting a unique role of Ni ions in benzylic C-O bond cleavage. Cyclic voltammetry experiments suggested that Ni ions could interact with BPE and lead to subsequent cleavage of the C-O bond. Benzylic C-O bond cleavage of substituted BPE was also demonstrated. This work provides an economical and environmentally friendly method for selective cleavage of C-O bonds in benzylic ethers as model compounds for lignin.

Abstract:Selective hydrogenolysis of 4-O-5 bond in lignin under relatively mild conditions is an important strategy for the production of valuable aromatic products, e.g. phenols, from renewable carbon resources. However, the easy saturation of benzene rings under reductive conditions over metal catalyst reduces the selectivity to aromatics. In this work, we investigated the effect of bromination of supported Ni nanoparticles on the phenol selectivity during the hydrogenolysis of diphenyl ether (DPE), a commonly used lignin model compound. Compared with the unmodified catalysts, Br-Ni/Al 2 O 3 catalyst derived from Ni-Al layered double oxides exhibits enhanced phenol selectivity (37% vs. 15%) under similar DPE conversions (60%). Various characterizations including transmission electron microscopy (TEM), in-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), and CO-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) indicate that Br preferentially located at the terrace site of Ni nanoparticles, deactivating the continuous Ni sites for benzene ring hydrogenation. In addition, the electron-withdrawing effect of Br creates positively charged Ni sites at the corners, facilitating the hydrogenolysis of C–O aryl ether bonds. During the hydrogenation of real lignin, the selective poisoning and electronic effects introduced by Br synergistically increased the yield of phenols from 12.20% on the initial Ni/Al 2 O 3 to 30.47% over the Br-Ni/Al 2 O 3 catalyst. This work provides an advanced strategy for the catalytic valorization of lignin by halogen modified metal-based catalysts.

Abstract:In the context of achieving carbon neutrality, converting lignin-derived molecules into high-value products through photocatalytic technology provides an environmentally friendly pathway. Establishing energy-efficient processes for converting lignin derivatives requires the construction of highly active and selective photocatalysts. However, enhancing the efficiency and selectivity of photocatalysts for lignin degradation poses an ongoing challenge due to discrepancies in the redox potential and the rapid recombination of photogenerated carriers. To address these significant obstacles, we devised an innovative strategy by developing a Ce2S3 nanoparticle-anchored TiO2 nanorod (Ce2S3/TiO2). This advanced photocatalyst with the S-scheme heterojunction, enabling simultaneous control of carrier dynamics and band structure, was used to study the photocatalytic degradation of the lignin model compound 2-phenoxy-1-acetophenone. Moreover, the photocatalyst can cleave the C-beta-O-4 bond selectively to convert the lignin model compound 2-phenoxy-1-acetophenone into phenol and acetophenone under visible-light irradiation. The yields are up to 94 and 80%, respectively, and 94 or 1.4 times greater than those obtained by pure TiO2 or Ce2S3 individually. In addition, our study for the increased activity in Ce2S3/TiO2 based on density functional theory calculations emphasizes the pivotal role of the S-scheme heterojunction generated between Ce2S3 and TiO2. This heterojunction significantly enhances carrier separation efficiency, thereby augmenting the efficacy of the photocatalytic process. The findings furnish valuable insights for developing advanced photocatalytic systems tailored to the efficient depolymerization of C-beta-O-4 bonds in lignin.

Abstract:The electrochemical reductive cleavage of the C-O bond in the lignin α-O-4 model compound benzyl phenyl ether (BPE) at room temperature was investigated using earth-abundant nickel as a catalyst in methanol. Experiments in a divided cell setup using either NiCl 2 ·6H 2 O salt or pre-deposited Ni on a carbon paper cathode (Ni/CP) under an inert atmosphere revealed the essential role of freshly and uniformly deposited Ni 0 on the electrode surface for the reductive, catalytic cleavage to yield phenol and toluene. To better understand the reaction mechanism, the surface morphology and composition of the Ni/CP electrode were determined by SEM, XRD, and XPS. Additionally, the role of methanol as a proton donor was established, and electrochemical hydrogenation/hydrogenolysis (ECH) experiments of BPE with sterically hindered substituents revealed that the reaction mechanism shares similarity with Pd/C hydrogenation/hydrogenolysis chemistry. DFT calculations further supported this mechanistic route and were consistent with the experimental observations. Based on both experimental and calculation results, a mechanism including (1) the interaction of the benzylic side of BPE with the catalyst surface, (2) adsorbed hydrogen interacting with the benzylic carbon to induce C-O bond scission, and (3) proton transfer to the phenoxy anion from the methanol was proposed.
Depolymerization of Lignosulfonate Catalyzed by Different Solid Base Oxides to Prepare Phenolic Compounds

Abstract:Lignin is the most abundant aromatic renewable polymer in nature. However, its very stable structure limits its widespread application. To achieve high-value utilization of lignin, this study used solid base oxides to depolymerize calcium lignosulfonate (CLS) for the synthesis of phenolic compounds. The catalyst precursors were prepared by hydrothermal synthesis, and the corresponding mesoporous metal oxides NiO, MgCoOx, and NiMgCoOx were obtained after calcination. MgCoOx and NiMgCoOx had similar but stronger basicity compared to NiO. While all oxides promoted the depolymerization of CLS, NiMgCoOx was identified as the best catalyst, achieving a maximum liquid product yield of 74.3 wt.% and a selectivity of phenolic compounds of 74.52% in the liquid product. In addition, NiMgCoOx showed satisfactory structural and catalytic stability. The experimental results indicated that solid base oxides can capture the active hydrogen in CLS, causing the hydrolysis reaction of ether bonds, and the resulting products continuously depolymerize or polymerize; Co present in the catalyst promotes the adsorption of hydrogen by Ni, while NiO in NiMgCoOx facilitates the adsorption of both reactants and hydrogen. The combination of Ni and Co improves hydrogenation performance.

Abstract:Because of the complex structure and inherent inert chemical activity of lignin, it is still challenging to depolymerize lignin to obtain valuable chemicals efficiently. Here, we present an FeCl3-promoted photocatalytic depolymerization strategy to realize the Cα-Cβ oxidative cleavage of lignin model compounds at room temperature. The method generates benzoic acid and phenol compounds in high yields. In addition, the method is effective for the depolymerization of organosolv lignin by cleavage of the products of Cα-Cβ bonds and affords the corresponding products. This strategy provides a method of using an economical photocatalyst to depolymerize lignin and provides a reference for the industrial depolymerization of lignin.

Selective production of phenolic monomer via catalytic depolymerization of lignin over cobalt-nickel-zirconium dioxide catalyst

Abstract:The utilization of lignin, an abundant and renewable bio-aromatic source, is of significant importance. In this study, lignin oxidation was examined at different temperatures with zirconium oxide (ZrO2)-supported nickel (Ni), cobalt (Co) and bimetallic Ni-Co metal catalysts under different solvents and oxygen pressure. Non-catalytic oxidation reaction produced maximum bio-oil (35.3 wt%), while catalytic oxidation significantly increased the bio-oil yield. The bimetallic catalyst Ni-Co/ZrO2 produced the highest bio-oil yield (67.4 wt%) compared to the monometallic catalyst Ni/ZrO2 (59.3 wt%) and Co/ZrO2 (54.0 wt%). The selectively higher percentage of vanillin, 2-methoxy phenol, acetovanillone, acetosyringone and vanillic acid compounds are found in the catalytic bio-oil. Moreover, it has been observed that the bimetallic Co-Ni/ZrO2 produced a higher amount of vanillin (43.7% and 13.30 wt%) compound. These results demonstrate that the bimetallic Ni-Co/ZrO2 catalyst promotes the selective cleavage of the ether β-O-4 bond in lignin, leading to a higher yield of phenolic monomer compounds.
Photocatalytic depolymerization of lignin via oxidizing cleavage of C α -C β bonds in micellar aqueous media

Abstract:Photocatalytic depolymerization of lignin to prepare high-value chemicals is a promising way to promote the valuable utilization of lignin. However, the complexity and stubbornness of lignin structure seriously decrease the photocatalytic efficiency and selectivity. Herein, the micellar aqueous media (SDS-8/HCl) consisting of sodium lauryl sulfonate and hydrochloric acid was successfully prepared. Photocatalyst TiO 2 and SDS-8/HCl system can effectively depolymerize the typical β-1 lignin models and ethanol organosolv lignin to value-added chemicals by oxidizing cleavage of lignin C α -C β bonds. The addition of hydrochloric acid solution (1 mol/L) improves the selectivity of photocatalytic breaking of lignin C α -C β bonds. Chlorine ions are oxidized to chlorine radicals by photogenerated holes and hydroxyl radicals, dramatically increasing the photocatalytic efficiency. Electron paramagnetic resonance technique and Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry were used to demonstrate the presence of chlorine radicals. Under optimal conditions, the conversion of substrate Dpol is 98.4 %, and the obtained products are mainly benzaldehyde and benzoic acid. Isotope labeling experiments show that water is also involved in photocatalytic reactions and the oxygen needed to form the product benzaldehyde comes from water. Single-electron transfer processes are possible photocatalytic mechanisms that differ from the previous reports. Importantly, water and chlorine ions were found to be involved in photocatalytic reactions for the first time and promote the cleavage of lignin C α -C β bonds. This work provides new ideas for photocatalytic cleavage of lignin C α -C β bonds in heterogeneous photocatalytic systems using micellar aqueous media.

Abstract:Selective cleavage of C-C linkages is the key and a challenge for lignin degradation to harvest value-added aromatic compounds. To this end, electrocatalytic oxidation presents a promising technique by virtue of mild reaction conditions and strong sustainability. However, the existing electrocatalysts (traditional bulk metal and metal oxides) for C-C bond oxidative cleavage suffer from poor selectivity and low product yields. We show for the first time that atomically dispersed Pt-N3C1 sites planted on nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (Pt-1/N-CNTs), constructed via a stepwise polymerization-carbonization-electrostatic adsorption strategy, are highly active and selective toward C-alpha-C-beta bond cleavage in beta-O-4 model compounds under ambient conditions. Pt-1/N-CNTs exhibits 99% substrate conversion with 81% yield of benzaldehyde, which is exceptional and unprecedented compared with previously reported electrocatalysts. Moreover, Pt-1/N-CNTs using only 0.41 wt % Pt achieved a much higher benzaldehyde yield than those of the state-of-the-art bulk Pt electrode (100 wt % Pt) and commercial Pt/C catalyst (20 wt % Pt). Systematic experimental investigation together with density functional theory (DFT) calculation suggests that the superior performance of Pt-1/N-CNTs arises from the atomically dispersed Pt-N3C1 sites facilitating the formation of a key C-beta radical intermediate, further inducing a radical/radical cross-coupling path to break the C-alpha-C-beta bond. Efficient and selective cleavage of lignin C–C bonds under visible light facilitated by the Zn(II)-doped mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride photocatalyst

Abstract:Despite the promise of photocatalysis for extracting aromatic compounds from renewable lignin feedstocks, the selective cleavage of C α –C β bonds in lignin under mild conditions poses a persistent challenge, primarily due to their elevated dissociation energies and steric hindrance. Herein, an efficient photocatalytic strategy for selectively breaking the C α –C β bonds of lignin with visible-light irradiation and room temperature is proposed, facilitated by the Zn(II)-doped porous graphitic carbon nitride (Zn/CN) photocatalyst. Reduced energy band gap and photoluminescence, along with intensified visible-light absorption and enhanced photocurrent of Zn/CN, contribute to its efficacy in photocatalytic activity. Consequently, the lignin model compound (2-phenoxy-1-phenylethanol) achieves a conversion rate of 99 %, demonstrating a notable selectivity of 97 % in specifically breaking the C α –C β bonds. Mechanistic investigations identify that photogenerated holes play a pivotal role during the photocatalytic conversion. Additionally, the activity and selectivity of Zn/CN photocatalyst are further confirmed by the successful photocatalytic conversion of pine kraft lignin, yielding high-value chemicals such as benzoic acid and vanillin. This research proposes an economical, efficient, and facile method for utilizing renewable lignin feedstocks under photocatalysis, thus advancing the production of high-value aromatic compounds.

Abstract:The catalytic oxidation of lignin into phenolic monomers with aldehydes as the main products is very attractive but the yield of desired monomers is still limited. The aim of this work is to investigate the reaction pathway for the conversion of lignin to aldehydes and aldehydes stabilization in alkaline media. Studies on pure aldehydes stability revealed that over-oxidation to carboxylic acids and condensation are crucial factors of limited yield. A chemical protection method using aniline as the capping agent was applied to the depolymerization of real lignin and achieved the theoretical maximum monomer yield within 30 min at 160 °C.

Abstract:Lignin alkaline degradation provides a potential sustainable strategy to produce aromatic compounds from lignocellulosic biomass. However, current alkaline degradation systems of lignin suffer from low selectivity and low yield because of complex reaction pathways and self-condensation of degradation products at high temperature. In this study, an EtONa-THF/DMSO system is constructed to selectively cleave the β-O-4 ether bond of lignin to generate benzoic acid compounds at low-temperature. The β-O-4 dimeric model compound was completely converted even at 0 °C, yielding 67.7 wt% of monomers. The isolated lignin gave a 20.3 wt% yield (almost 100 % of theoretical yield) of benzoic acid compounds with 100 % selectivity at 50 °C. Molecular dynamics calculation revealed that the formation of hydrogen network between lignin and solvent was less intense in aprotic solvent. DFT calculation revealed possible reaction pathways and showed a small energy gap between essential intermediates. These analyses provided a reasonable explanation to the high reactivity of β-O-4 structure under such reaction condition.

Abstract:A sulfonyl-chloride-modified lignin-based porous carbon-supported metal phthalocyanine catalyst was prepared and used to replace the traditional Fenton's reagent for lignin degradation. The catalyst underwent a detailed characterization analysis in terms of functional group distributions, surface area, morphological structure, via FT-IR, XPS, BET, and SEM. The catalyst possessed a specific surface area of 638.98 m2/g and a pore volume of 0.291 cm3/g. The prepared catalyst was studied for its ability of oxidative degradation of lignin under different reaction conditions. By optimizing the reaction conditions, a maximum liquid product yield of 38.94% was obtained at 135 °C with 3.5 wt% of catalyst and 15 × 10−2 mol/L H2O2; at the same time, a maximum phenols selectivity of 32.58% was achieved. The compositions and properties of liquid products obtained from lignin degradation using different catalyst concentrations were studied comparatively via GC-MS, FT-IR, 1H-NMR, and EA. Furthermore, the structure changes of solid residues are also discussed.
