Abstract:<p>Constructed wetlands (CWs) integrated with bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) are being intensively researched with the names like constructed wetland-microbial fuel cell (CW-MFC), electro-wetlands,electroactive wetlands, and microbial electrochemical technologies-based constructed wetland since the last decade. The implantation of BES in CW facilitates the tuning of redox activities and electron flow balance in aerobic and anaerobic zones in the CW bed matrix, thereby alleviating the limitation associated with electron acceptor availability and increasing its operational controllability. The benefits of CW-BES include high treatment efficiency, electricity generation, and recalcitrant pollutant abatement. This article presents CW-BES technology's journey since its emergence to date, encompassing all the research done so far, including the basic principle and functioning, bio-electrocatalysts as its machinery, influential factors for microbial interactions, and operational parameters controlling different processes. A few key challenges and improvements are also discussed in particular for electricity harvesting from the systems.</p>

Abstract:With advancements in research and the necessity of improving the performance of bioelectrochemical system (BES), coupling anaerobic digestion (AD) with BES is crucial for energy gain from wastewater and bioremediation. Hybridization of BES-AD concept opens new avenues for pollutant degradation, carbon capture and nutrient-resource recovery from wastewater. The strength of merging BES-AD lies in synergy, and this approach was employed to differentiate fads from strategies with the potential for full-scale implementation and making it an energy-positive system. The integration of BES and AD system increases the overall performance and complexity of combined system and the cost of operation. From a technical standpoint, the primary determinants of BES-AD feasibility for field applications are the scalability and economic viability. High potential market for such integrated system attract industrial partners for more industrial trials and investment before commercialization. However, BES-AD with high energy efficacy and negative economics demands performance boost.

Abstract:Bioelectrochemical system (BES) is an emerging technology for wastewater treatment. The urgent requirement for dealing with water shortage, wastewater treatment and reuse, energy generation, and resources recovery has promoted intensive research in BES during the last decade. This review summarizes the latest typical BES configurations based on specific functions, including microbial fuel cells (MFC), microbial electrolysis cells (MEC), microbial electrosynthesis systems (MSS), microbial desalination cells (MDC), microbial recycling cells (MRC), microbial solar cells (MSC), and microbial electrochemical snorkel (MES). The removal of contaminants, particularly emerging organic, non-metallic, metallic, and metalloid contaminants, and the recovery of resources in the form of bioenergy, biofuel, nutrients, metals, and metalloids in wastewater treatment using BES technology have been reviewed in this work. Limitations of BES technology in terms of reactor performance, scale-up, and construction costs for real-world wastewater treatment applications are discussed and future research directions needed for the successful deployment of BES technology are proposed.

Abstract:Constructed wetland microcosms (CWMs) are artificially designed ecosystem which utilizes both complex and ordinary interactions between supporting media, macrophytes, and microorganisms to treat almost all types of wastewater. CWMs are considered as green and sustainable techniques which require lower energy input, less operational and maintenance cost and provide critical ecological benefits such as wildlife habitat, aquaculture, groundwater recharge, flood control, recreational uses, and add aesthetic value. They are good alternatives to conventional treatment systems particularly for smaller communities as well as distant and decentralized locations. The pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), and temperature are the key controlling factors while several other parameters such as hydraulic loading rates (HLR), hydraulic retention time (HRT), diversity of macrophytes, supporting media, and water depth are critical to achieving better performance. From the literature survey, it is evaluated that the removal performance of CWMs can be improved significantly through recirculation of effluent and artificial aeration (intermittent). This review paper presents an assessment of CWMs as a sustainable option for treatment of wastewater nutrients, organics, and heavy metals from domestic wastewater. Initially, a concise note on the CWMs and their components are presented, followed by a description of treatment mechanisms, major constituents involved in the treatment process, and overall efficiency. Finally, the effects of ecological factors and challenges for their long-term operations are highlighted.

Abstract:Constructed wetlands (CWs) are an emerging, environmentally friendly engineering system employed in China. They require lower investment and operation costs while providing higher treatment efficiency and more ecosystem services than conventional wastewater treatment methods. Introduced to China in 1987, CW systems used for wastewater treatment have rapidly increased in number, particularly since the late 1990s. This review summarizes the state-of-the-art application of CW systems for water pollution treatment by reviewing the basics of the technology and its historical development and performance efficiency. Current progress, limitations, future concerns, and the challenges of CW technologies are also discussed. Also highlighted is the need for sufficient and appropriate data to assist in the further development of CW systems and the implementation of integrated "bottom-up" and "top-down" approaches by both the public in general and government bodies in particular.

Abstract:The availability of clean water and the depletion of non-renewable resources provide challenges to modern society. The widespread use of conventional wastewater treatment necessitates significant financial and energy expenditure. Constructed Wetland Microbial Fuel Cells (CW-MFCs), a more recent alternative technology that incorporates a Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) inside a Constructed Wetland (CW), can alleviate these problems. By utilizing a CW’s inherent redox gradient, MFC can produce electricity while also improving a CW’s capacity for wastewater treatment. Electroactive bacteria in the anaerobic zone oxidize the organic contaminants in the wastewater, releasing electrons and protons in the process. Through an external circuit, these electrons travel to the cathode and produce electricity. Researchers have demonstrated the potential of CW-MFC technology in harnessing bio-electricity from wastewater while achieving pollutant removal at the lab and pilot scales, using both domestic and industrial wastewater. However, several limitations, such as inadequate removal of nitrogen, phosphates, and toxic organic/inorganic pollutants, limits its applicability on a large scale. In addition, the whole system must be well optimized to achieve effective wastewater treatment along with energy, as the ecosystem of the CW-MFC is large, and has diverse biotic and abiotic components which interact with each other in a dynamic manner. Therefore, by modifying important components and optimizing various influencing factors, the performance of this hybrid system in terms of wastewater treatment and power generation can be improved, making CW-MFCs a cost-effective, cleaner, and more sustainable approach for wastewater treatment that can be used in real-world applications in the future.

Advancement in constructed wetland microbial fuel cell process for wastewater treatment and electricity generation: a review

Abstract:The constructed wetland coupled with a microbial fuel cell (CW-MFC) is a wastewater treatment process that combines contaminant removal with electricity production, making it an environmentally friendly option. This hybrid system primarily relies on anaerobic bioprocesses for wastewater treatment, although other processes such as aerobic bioprocesses, plant uptake, and chemical oxidation also contribute to the removal of organic matter and nutrients. CW-MFCs have been successfully used to treat various types of wastewater, including urban, pharmaceutical, paper and pulp industry, metal-contaminated, and swine wastewater. In CW-MFC, macrophytes such as rice plants, Spartina angalica, Canna indica, and Phragmites australis are used. The treatment process can achieve a chemical oxygen demand removal rate of between 80 and 100%. Initially, research focused on enhancing power generation from CW-MFC, but recent studies have shifted towards resource recovery from wastewater. This review paper provides an overview of the development of constructed wetland microbial fuel cell technology, from its early stages to its current applications. The paper also highlights research gaps and potential directions for future research.

Abstract:Nature (ecosystem) based processes for wastewater treatment include constructed wetlands (CWs), waste stabilization ponds, vegetated drainage ditches, buffer zones, instream or bankside river techniques, and mixotrophic systems, where light and CO2 are utilized, in addition to organic carbon compounds, by algal cultures. Algae-based systems can simultaneously remove organic matter, N, and P and may offer substantial energetic advantages compared to traditional biological treatment systems, require small spatial footprint, and contribute to biofuels production and CO2 emissions mitigation. Bioelectrochemical systems (BES) such as microbial fuel cells (MFCs) present characteristics compatible with the use in isolated realities for water and wastewater treatment with contextual energy recovery and may be combined with other nature-based process technologies to achieve good treatment and energy efficiencies. Despite that their application in real-scale plants has not been assessed yet, the most probable outcome will be the in situ/on site treatment (or pretreatment) of wastes for small “in house” plants not connected to the sewerage network. This paper focuses on the current practices and perspectives of hybrid nature-based systems, such as constructed wetlands and microalgae integrated phytoremediation plants, and their possible integration with microbial electrochemical technologies to increase recovery possibilities from wastes and positively contribute to a green economy approach.

Abstract:Wetlands, either constructed or natural, offer a cheaper and low-cost alternative technology for wastewater treatment. A constructed wetland system that is specifically engineered for water quality improvement as a primary purpose is termed as a ‘Constructed Wetland Treatment System’ (CWTS). In the past, many such systems were constructed to treat low volumes of wastewater loaded with easily degradable organic matter for isolated populations in urban areas. However, widespread demand for improve in water quality, and water reclamation and reuse, is currently the driving force for the implementation of CWTS all over the world. Recent concerns over wetland losses have generated a need for the creation of manmade wetlands, which are intended to emulate the functions and values of natural wetlands that have been destroyed. Natural characteristics are applied to CWTS with emergent macrophyte stands that duplicate the physical, chemical and biological processes of natural wetland systems. The number of CWTS in use has very much increased in the past 50 years. The use of constructed wetlands is gaining rapid interest. Most of these systems cater for tertiary treatment from towns and cities. They are larger in size, usually using surface-flow system to remove low concentration of nutrient (N and P) and suspended solids. However, in some countries, these constructed wetland treatment systems are usually used to provide secondary treatment of domestic sewage for village populations. These constructed wetland systems have been seen as an economically attractive, energy-efficient way of providing high standards of wastewater treatment. Typically, wetlands are constructed for one or more of four primary purposes: creation of habitat to compensate for natural wetlands converted for agriculture and urban development, water quality improvement, flood control, and production of food and fiber (constructed aquaculture wetlands). In present research the sewage water is treated by constructing Horizontal sub – surface flow constructed wetland, and reed grass is used as vegetation to treat waste and make the sewage waste water clean.

Abstract:In the field of sustainable wastewater management, electroactive wetlands (EW), or constructed wetland-microbial fuel cells (CW-MFC), are an emerging technology. With the growing problem of untreated wastewater, the emphasis must shift to decentralisation of wastewater treatment infrastructure, and CW-MFC can be an excellent choice. This review provides a chronologically organized account of the design and configuration of CW-MFCs developed between 2010 and 2023. The research on CW-MFC has mainly focused on material, positioning and number of electrodes; use of electroconductive media and filler materials; flow regime; algal-based CW-MFC and multistage setups. Compared to traditional constructed wetlands (CW) and microbial fuel cells (MFC), CW-MFCs have a number of advantages, including better treatment efficiency, faster organic matter utilisation, lower capital and land requirements and a smaller carbon footprint. However, there are some limitations as well, such as upscaling and viable electricity generation, which are covered in more detail in the article. Moreover, the economics of this technology is also evaluated. The microbiology of a CW-MFC and its influence on its performance are also elaborated. Recent advancements in this field in terms of design, configuration and performance are discussed. Finally, the knowledge gaps that must be addressed before this technique can be successfully implemented on a large scale are highlighted, along with specific recommendations. This article aims to advocate for EWs as an ideal decentralised wastewater treatment technique, while also shedding light on the areas that still need to be worked on.

Abstract:Constructed wetlands (CWs) are widely used in the treatment of sewage. Since land is the limiting, treatment of sewage by CWs, in situ bioremediation using CW is the best option. The problem with in situ remediation is the low hydrological retention time and low levels of Dissolved Oxygen (DO). To overcome these constraints, an integrated Constructed Wetland System (CWS) was developed and functionalized at Neela Hauz Biodiversity Park, Delhi, India. The present study aimed to evaluate the performance of a newly - developed integrated CWS for the removal of pollutants from sewage. The integrated CWS has two stabilizing ponds, three filtration chambers with rough filters, and CW with macrophytes. The performance efficiency of the system was assessed in terms of removal efficiency of pH, TSS, TDS, COD, BOD, NH3-N, PO4-P, some heavy metals and the enhancement of DO. The removal efficiency for TSS, TDS, COD, BOD, NH3-N, and PO4-P varied from 0.64 to 89.02%. The DO concentration enhanced from 0.0 to 3.5 mg/l in CW and 7.5 mg/l in lake. The reduction in heavy metals varied from 16.63 to 100%. The integrated CW design performed more efficiently in the removal of pollutants within 14 hours of HRT than most of the CWs used by many workers and hence can be used for in situ remediation of sewage.

As of 1999,there were more than 500 constructed wetland in Europe and 600 in north America . constructed wetland are a less energy intensive and more environmentally sound way of treating waste water and conserving potable water . The first single family home constructed wetland in southern Nevada was completed Eighth years ago. A constructed wetland (CW) is an artificial wetland to treat sewage, greywater, stormwater runoff or industrial wastewater. It may also be designed for land reclamation after mining, or as a mitigation step for natural areas lost to land development constructed wetlands also act as a biofilter and/or can remove a range of pollutants (such as organic matter, nutrients, pathogens, heavy metals) from the water. Constructed wetlands are designed to remove water pollutants such as suspended solids, organic matter and nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus).

Abstract:The coupling of constructed wetlands (CWs) to microbial fuel cells (MFCs) has turned out to be a source of renewable energy for the production of bioelectricity and for the simultaneous wastewater treatment. Both technologies have an aerobic zone in the air‐water interface and an anaerobic zone in the lower part, where the anode and the cathode are strategically placed. This hybridization is a promising bioelectrochemical technology that exerts a symbiosis between plant‐bacteria in the rhizosphere of an aquatic plant, converting solar energy into bioelectricity through the formation of root exudates as an endogenous substrate and a microbial activity. The difference between CW‐MFC and MFC conventional lies in the bioelectricity and substrate production in situ, where exogenous substrates are not required for example wastewater. However, CW‐MFC can take organic content present in wastewater, promoting the removal of some pollutants. Different areas that comprise the study of a CW‐MFC have been explored, including the structures and their operation. This review aims to provide concise information on the state of the art of CW‐MFC systems, where a summary on important aspects of the development of this technology, such as bioelectricity production, configurations, plant species, rhizodeposits, electrode materials, wastewater treatment, and future perspectives, is presented. This system is a promising technology, not only for the production of bioenergy but also to maintain a clean environment, since during its operation, no toxic byproducts were formed.

Abstract:Constructed wetland (CW) is an effective ecological technology to treat water pollution and has the significant advantages of high impact resistance, simple construction process, and low maintenance cost. However, under extreme conditions such as low temperature, high salt concentration, and multiple types of pollutants, some bottlenecks exist, including the difficulty in improving operating efficiency and the low pollutant removal rate. Microbial electrochemical technology is an emerging clean energy technology and has the similar structure and pollutant removal mechanism to CW. Microbial electrochemistry combined with CW can improve the overall removal effect of pollutants in wetlands. This review summarizes characterization methods of microbial electrochemistry-enhanced constructed wetland systems, construction methods of different composite systems, mechanisms of single and composite systems, and removal effects of composite systems on different pollutants in water bodies. Based on the shortcomings of existing studies, the potential breakthroughs in microbial electrochemistry-enhanced constructed wetlands are proposed for developing the optimization solution of constructed wetlands.

Abstract:Constructed wetlands (CW) is an environmentally friendly technique for removing pollutants from wastewater and has been applied to municipal wastewater, petroleum refinery wastewater, agriculture drainage, acid mine drainage, etc. The past decade has seen a remarkable number of innovations in the exponentially growing field of microbiology. This manuscript covers a critical review of key aspects of CW, such as various types of CW, the contaminants and their removal mechanisms, degradation pathways, challenges and opportunities, materials, applications, and theory with a focus on recent advances in the last three decades. In addition, an attempt has been taken to project future advances in the field of CW and facilitate these advances by framing key unsolved problems in CW. Guidelines are prepared for the fast-growing CW field through the standardization of key design aspects. This review covers the evaluation of the current state-of-the-art of CW technology and provides definitions and performance metric nomenclature in an effort to unify the fast-growing CW community. It also contains an outlook on the emerging trends in CW and proposes future research and development directions.

Abstract:Evapotranspiration (ET) is a natural phenomenon of water loss through plants, which can influence the treatment performance of constructed wetlands integrated with microbial fuel cells (CW-MFC). The influence of ET on the electrochemical performance and treatment performance of CW-MFC in an actual field with real wastewater has never been studied in detail. Thus, this research aims to explore the effects of water loss ascribed by ET on different performance indicators of a CW-MFC fed with municipal wastewater in actual field conditions, for instance, voltage and power generation, internal resistance, and wastewater treatment. During the first 48 h of the operation of CW-MFC, a significant drop in the water level by 336 mm (from 15 mm to 351 mm from the top surface) in the cathode electrode zone due to ET was recorded. This water loss at the cathode enhanced cathodic reduction kinetics by increasing the oxygen saturation at the cathode, thereby improving the voltage generation from 182.5 ± 12.5 mV (first 6 h when the cathode was more water-saturated) to 800 ± 13.47 mV (after 48 h when the cathode was air-saturated due to loss of water), which corresponds to the current and power density of 85.71 mA/m 3 and 25.71 mW/m 3 , respectively. Together with this significant coulombic efficiency (CE) and net energy recovery (NER) of 11.95 % and 2.44 Wh/kg·COD was achieved. The internal resistance of CW-MFC was also noted to decrease from 1000 Ω in the first 6 h to 700 Ω at the end of 48 h. After 48 h of the observation period, the CW-MFC could achieve chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonium, and phosphate removal efficiency of 80 ± 7.98 %, 73.17 ± 5.01 %, and 75.60 ± 1.65 %, respectively. This study demonstrates a substantial effect on the performance of CW-MFC due to ET water loss in the actual field. Thus, ET is a critical aspect and worth considering for large-scale implementation of CW-MFCs, especially in tropical regions or with dense plantations.

Constructed wetland (CW) an engineered unit that follows bio-geochemical approaches to heal the polluted stage of water with a significant pollutant removal efficiency, has stood first in the field of sustainable water treatment and technology. Not only water treatment through an eco-friendly manner but also creating an ecosystem with in that working area with aesthetic and economical production are the major reasons behind the popularity of this system. Selection of vegetation, substrate and construction of that system at a proper location are the limitation of constructed wetland. In this system sedimentation, filtration and adsorption through substrate, neutralization, and precipitations, phyto-accumulation of plant species and microbial remediation by microorganisms present in the rhizospheres of plants etc. are the processes that supports the treatment activity. This paper discusses various types of constructed wetlands and their mechanism and performance intended for municipal wastewater treatment. Besides it the paper covers the discussion regarding reusability of the treated water. This paper will help promote the wastewater treatment using CWs and further help to design and develop innovative hybrid technologies for sustainable wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Producing food by farming and subsequent food manufacturing are central to the world's food supply, accounting for more than half of all production. Production is, however, closely related to the creation of large amounts of organic wastes or byproducts (agro-food waste or wastewater) that negatively impact the environment and the climate. Global climate change mitigation is an urgent need that necessitates sustainable development. For that purpose, proper agro-food waste and wastewater management are essential, not only for waste reduction but also for resource optimization. To achieve sustainability in food production, biotechnology is considered as key factor since its continuous development and broad implementation will potentially benefit ecosystems by turning polluting waste into biodegradable materials; this will become more feasible and common as environmentally friendly industrial processes improve. Bioelectrochemical systems are a revitalized, promising biotechnology integrating microorganisms (or enzymes) with multifaceted applications. The technology can efficiently reduce waste and wastewater while recovering energy and chemicals, taking advantage of their biological elements' specific redox processes. In this review, a consolidated description of agro-food waste and wastewater and its remediation possibilities, using different bioelectrochemical-based systems is presented and discussed together with a critical view of the current and future potential applications.

Abstract:Sustainable energy and carbon neutrality has been a key issue in waste/wastewater management. Recovery and recycling of materials such as nutrients and metal are highly anticipated to achieve a zero-energy treatment and pollution control, and subsequently secure sustainability of exhausted resources. The difficulty of resource recovery from waste/wastewater and sediment is mainly due to the immature technology, and dispersed (or less concentrated) target resources in wastewater and natural source that results in technical challenges and poor economics. Bioelectrochemical system (BES) has been widely investigated for electrical energy recovery, intermediate chemical production and recently for useful resource recovery. Certain amounts of energy in wastewater can be used as reducing power for energy production as well as for useful material recovery from wastewater and natural sources using a novel inter-disciplinary biotechnology, BES simultaneously treating wastewater.

Abstract:Wastewater recycling for non-potable uses has gained significant attention to mitigate the high pressure on freshwater resources. This requires using a sustainable technique to treat natural municipal wastewater as an alternative to conventional methods, especially in arid and semi-arid rural areas. One of the promising techniques applied to satisfy the objective of wastewater reuse is the constructed wetlands (CWs) which have been used extensively in most countries worldwide through the last decades. The present study introduces a significant review of the definition, classification, and components of CWs, identifying the mechanisms controlling the removal process within such units. Vertical, horizontal, and hybrid CWs were used to treat different types of wastewater from individual households, waste disposal sites, oil refineries, agricultural production, and tannery effluent. The effects of several design and operational factors related to the type of plant, substrate, and flow direction are studied and surveyed in this work to be the starting point for researchers in future investigations
