Abstract:It remains a challenge to design and fabricate high-performance gas sensors using metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived metal oxide semiconductors (MOS) as sensing materials due to the structural damage during the annealing process. In this study, the mesoporous In2O3-NiO hollow spheres consisting of nanosheets were prepared via a solvothermal reaction and subsequent cation exchange. More importantly, the transformation of Ni-MOF into In/Ni-MOF through exchanging the Ni2+ ion with In3+ ion can prevent the destruction of the porous reticular skeleton and hierarchical structure of Ni-MOF during calcination. Thus, the mesoporous In2O3-NiO hollow composites possess high porosity and large specific surface area (55.5 m2 g-1), which can produce sufficient permeability pathways for volatile organic compound (VOCs) molecules, maximize the active sites, and enhance the capacity of VOC capture. The mesoporous In2O3-NiO-based sensors exhibit enhanced triethylamine (TEA) sensing performance (S = 33.9-100 ppm) with distinct selectivity, good long-term stability, and lower detection limit (500 ppb) at 200 °C. These results can be attributed to the mesoporous hollow hierarchical structure and p-n junction of In2O3-NiO. The preparation concept mentioned in this work may provide a versatile platform applicable to various mesoporous composite sensing material-based hollow structures.
Chemiresistive sensor based on hollow Fe2O3 octahedrons incorporated into porous In2O3 nanofibers for enhanced sensing performance and recognition toward triethylamine

Abstract:The performance of chemiresistive gas sensors greatly depends on the sensing materials. Till now, it is still a hot topic to develop high-performance sensing materials. In this study, hollow Fe2O3 octahedrons incorporated into porous In2O3 nanofibers (Fe2O3@In2O3) have been prepared using the electrospinning method, followed by thermal oxidation. Through the electrospinning technique, MIL-101(Fe) octahedrons are incorporated as sacrificial templates into the precursor nanofibers containing In3+. The precursor nanofibers are transformed into porous In2O3 nanofibers by calcination in air, and MIL-101(Fe) are simultaneously changed into hollow Fe2O3 octahedrons, forming Fe2O3@In2O3 nanofibers. Considering their unique morphology, the gas sensing properties of the prepared nanofibers are investigated. The results demonstrate that they exhibit high response and selectivity toward triethylamine (TEA) with a good stability. Furthermore, their dynamic sensing behaviors are investigated under the modulation of working temperature by triangular wave heating voltage. According to their characteristic response curves, TEA can be effectively discriminated among all the detected gases in combination with a simple principal component analysis (PCA)-based recognition algorithm. Additionally, TEA can be quantitatively analyzed through the relationship between its concentration and the response at the characteristic point of the response curves.

Abstract:Metal oxide semiconductors (MOS) have been extensively investigated for the detection of toxic organic amines. However, the high working temperature of metal oxide semiconductors (MOS) remains a challenge that greatly limits their potential in sensor technology. Meanwhile, the sensing mechanism of triethylamine (TEA) has not been fully understood. In this work, the authors report the design of heterogeneous Co3O4/carbon nanofibers (Co3O4/CNFs) and their utilization toward TEA detection at low temperature. With an optimized loading density of Co3O4 nanocrystals, the sensor based on Co3O4/CNFs, which exhibits remarkable response to TEA even at room temperature, delivers the best response of Co3O4/CNFs at 150 °C. Notably, the response of Co3O4/CNFs is three times higher than that of pristine Co3O4. More importantly, they, for the first time, elucidate the TEA sensing mechanism via operando diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, revealing that the oxidation of TEA undergoes a two‐step process. This work not only paves the way to design high performance sensing materials, but also contributes to the fundamental understanding of a sensing mechanism.

Abstract:MOF-derived metal oxides are promising porous materials for gas detection. And neodymium oxide could be favorable for the sensing process due to the active chemistry of lanthanide Nd. Here, a triethylamine sensor based on Nd2O3-ZnO composites was constructed. The gas-sensing properties and mechanism were studied in detail. The XPS and O2-TPD characterization confirmed the increase of chemisorbed oxygen on the composite surface. And the density functional theory calculation results showed that oxygen molecule has stronger chemical adsorption, enhanced charge transfer and longer bond length on the surface of Nd2O3 than that on ZnO. The adsorption and activation for oxygen, the structural advantage and the electronic modulation effect of heterojunction lead to the high performance of the composite for triethylamine detection. The response of the composite to 100 ppm TEA was 15.7 times higher than that of ZnO. Meanwhile, the sensor showed a lower operating temperature and detection limit (150 ppb). This study provides a reference for the construction of high-performance TEA sensors and the application of Nd2O3 in the sensing field.

Abstract:In recent years, metal–organic framework (MOF) derivatives have gradually become ideal materials for gas sensors due to their controllable composition, diverse structures and open metal sites. In this research, a simplified hydrothermal method was applied to successfully prepare MOF-derived α-Fe 2 O 3 spindles, and an in situ reduction method was then utilized to deposit Pt, Pd and PtPd bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) on the α-Fe 2 O 3 spindles. The effects of noble metals Pt, Pd and PtPd on the gas-sensing properties of Fe 2 O 3 were systematically examined. The PtPd/α-Fe 2 O 3 sensor has enhanced gas-sensing performance for triethylamine (TEA), especially at PtPd content of 1.5 wt% and mass ratio of Pt : Pd = 90 : 10, where the response of the sensor to 100 ppm TEA at a lower temperature of 150 °C is 442, which is 34 times higher than that of the original α-Fe 2 O 3 (response of 13). Additionally, the sensor demonstrated improved response/recovery properties and very respectable selectivity, repeatability, long-term stability within 30 days and lower detection limit (500 ppb) at 150 °C. Combining the results of XPS and O 2 -TPD, the enhanced gas-sensing properties of PtPd bimetallic-modified α-Fe 2 O 3 over monometallic (Pt or Pd) modified α-Fe 2 O 3 were analyzed, which can be attributed to the chemical and electronic sensitization of noble metals and the synergistic effect of the PtPd bimetallic NPs, resulting in more surface defects and enhanced oxygen adsorption capacity of the sensing material. This work provided an effective gas-sensing material for the low-temperature detection and analysis of triethylamine gas.

Abstract:Chemiresistive gas sensor with high sensitivity, selectivity and fast response for specific target gas has many applications from environmental monitor to internet of things. Herein, a highly sensitive and selective nanostructured triethylamine (TEA) gas sensor is fabricated successfully by designing semiconductor heterostructures consisting of ZnO nanorods and alpha-Fe2O3 nanoparticles. ZnO nanorods grow directly on flat Al2O3 electrodes and alpha-Fe2O3 nanoparticles are deposited onto ZnO nanorods by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). Such alpha-Fe2O3/ZnO sensor has larger specific surface area (20.79 m(2)/g), adsorbs more oxygen ions and exhibits higher response (63 to 50 ppm TEA), lower detection concentration (1 ppm), and shorter response time (4 s), which are all much better than the controlled ZnO nanorods sensor. Besides the interface depletion layer at the alpha-Fe2O3/ZnO interface, we find that the surface depletion layer due to oxygen absorption is also very important for the sensor performance. Moreover, more surface adsorbed oxygen in the alpha-Fe2O3/ZnO sensor is proved by both XPS analysis and density functional theory (DFT) simulation, which highlights the significance of gas sensing mechanism study for such composite heterojunction structure.

Abstract:Over the years, efforts have been made to develop simple and efficient techniques for the detection of triethylamine (TEA). In this task, to solve the problem that the powder easily falls off in the conventional MoO3 sensor preparation method, we directly grow alpha-MoO3 nanosheets with a high TEA sensing response on Al2O3 tubes through seed-layer-assisted growth technology and a hydrothermal method. Furthermore, to enhance the gas-monitoring performance of the alpha-MoO3 sensing element, nanoscale alpha-MoO3 particles were deposited on alpha-MoO3 nanosheets through a pulsed-laser-deposition method and the binary composite nanostructured materials were designed and fabricated. The morphology as well as structures of the alpha-MoO3/alpha-MoO3 materials have been characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, etc. The alpha-MoO3/alpha-MoO3 sensors exhibit a superior performance toward TEA than the pristine alpha-MoO3 sensor does, such as enhanced sensitivity and excellent stability. The mechanisms of enhanced sensing properties are discussed from the points of an alpha-MoO3/alpha-MoO3 N N heterojunction based on the depletion layer model. Because of the general working principle and controllable growth strategy, this study provides a way to design and prepare chemical resistive gas sensors with high performance.
Highly Selective Triethylamine Gas Sensor Based on ZnO/Ti3C2Tx MXene Self-Assembly Heterostructure

Abstract:MXenes, as new two-dimensional transition metal compounds, has become promising sensing materials due to the excellent metal conductivity, abundant adsorption sites and the terminal groups of -O, -OH and -F. In this study, we report the well-etched accordion-like Ti3C2Tx by removing Al layer in Ti3AlC2, where T-x represents a wealth of terminal functional groups (-OH, -F, -O, etc.). In addition, unique hierarchical self-assembly ZnO/Ti3C2Tx nanocomposites are synthesized by hydrothermal method. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller Method investigation also shows that the ZnO/Ti3C2Tx nanocomposites has a specific surface area of about 22.08 m(2)/g, and the pore size is mainly located at 11.1 nm. The innovative nanostructure is conducive to the adsorption and response of gas molecules. By investigating the gas sensitive properties of the sensors, it is found that the response of the ZnO/Ti3C2Tx sensor to triethylamine (TEA) is improved by 66 times and 1.58 times over that of pure Ti3C2Tx and ZnO, and the optimal operating temperature is 60degree celsius lower than that of pure ZnO. In addition, the LOD (Low Of Detection) of about 32.7 ppb indicates that the ZnO/Ti3C2Tx sensor is suitable for the detection of low concentrations TEA. The sensing performances of the ZnO/Ti3C2Tx sensor at a high humidity of 75 % RH verifies the strong sensing performance in high humidity environment. Furthermore, the composite sensor stabilize in 6 repetitive tests and present slight decrease in response value over 30 days. The excellent TEA sensitive properties indicate that the ZnO/Ti3C2Tx nanocomposite sensor may have promising applications in the gas sensitive field.
PdPt Nanoparticle-Functionalized α-Fe 2 O 3 Hollow Nanorods for Triethylamine Sensing

Abstract:Noble metals (Pd, Pt, and PdPt) nanocrystals with uniform size and good dispersity were synthesized by the oleylamine (OAm) and borane tributylamine complex (BTB) system in a nitrogen atmosphere and employed to functionalize α-Fe2O3 hollow nanorods. The obtained PdPt/α-Fe2O3 composite has high specific surface area (73.5 m2 g–1) and mesoporous structure (∼10.1 nm). The XPS characterization indicated a direct electronic interaction between PdPt and α-Fe2O3 and the strong dissociation effect of PdPt on oxygen. Compared with α-Fe2O3, Pd/α-Fe2O3, and Pt/α-Fe2O3, the PdPt/α-Fe2O3 sensor exhibits higher response (∼98), faster response, and recovery times (7 s/4 s) to 50 ppm of TEA at 190 °C, and the actual detection limit is as low as 100 ppb. The improved sensing performance of the PdPt/α-Fe2O3 sensor was mainly attributed to the high catalytic activity of PdPt to TEA oxidation. In addition, the electronic senstization of Pd and the synergistic effect of PdPt also played an assistant role. Abstract:Metal-organic Frameworks (MOFs) are promising precursors and templates for the construction of porous micro/nanostructures. In this work, we prepared a bimetallic MOFs-derived metal oxide Co3O4/In2O3 nanoparticles (NPs) gas sensor by hydrothermal method for the detection of TEA. The composition, microstructure and gas sensitivity of Co3O4/In2O3 NPs were investigated. The results show that Co3O4/In2O3 NPs have excellent response and selectivity to TEA. At 225 °C, the response of Co3O4/In2O3 NPs to 20 ppm TEA reaches 365.3, which is 30.2 times the response of the pristine In2O3. The reason for the improvement of the gas sensing performance of Co3O4/In2O3 NPs and the gas sensing mechanism were discussed in detail.

Abstract:Owing to the acidic surface and specific catalytic oxidation activity towards C-N bond, the α-MoO 3 commonly exhibits a superior sensing response towards organic amine (eg. triethylamine). However, the challenge of sluggish recovery hinders the fast detection in actual demand. In this paper, distinct structural morphologies of the α-MoO 3 (nanorods, nanoplates, and microsheets) have been reported through pyrolyzing the Mo-MOF nanorod precursor at varied temperatures in air. The surface structural information is evaluated using various characterization techniques. The result of gas-sensing experiment reveals the MOF-derived α-MoO 3 nanoplate shows the optimum response towards triethylamine (TEA) vapor with the superior selectivity, high response (R a /R g =121.1–100 ppm), low practical detection limit (0.2 ppm), and approving response/recovery times (3/715 s) against the other MOF-derived α-MoO 3 products. Furthermore, a surface interaction model between the TEA and lattice oxygen (O Latt ) over the α-MoO 3 surface is proposed to illustrate the improvement in sensing response. This paper demonstrates a reliable avenue of MOF-derived morphology engineering for optimizing the sensing capability.

Nanoarchitectonics of Nest-Like MnO2/TiO2 Thin Film for Triethylamine Sensing

Abstract:Nanostructured composite oxides are widely used for detecting toxic volatile organic compounds; yet the contributions of the composition and nanostructure modulation need further clarifications. Herein, we develop directly a nest-like MnO2/TiO2 on alumina tubes for effective triethylamine sensing. The sensing body consisted of a pencil-drawing graphite layer on alumina tube, an intermediate layer of MnO2 nanosheets decorated with TiO2 nanoparticles, and a top layer of quasi-aligned TiO2 nanowires. The response of the MnO2/TiO2 sensors towards 100 ppm triethylamine at 200 degrees C is 6.8, which is superior to that of both components alone. It reveals that compositing MnO2 with TiO2 leads to a higher Mn4+/Mn3+ ratio and in turn more adsorbed oxygen on the surface, which contributes to the gas sensing performance. Heterojunctions between TiO2/MnO2 and homojunctions between TiO2 nanoparticles and TiO2 nanowires are also believed to provide additional resistance modulations to enhance the response. Nanostructure modulations further contribute to the response, as evidenced by the fact that the optimized response of decorating MnO2 nanosheets with TiO2 nanoparticles is 4.7, being lower than 6.8 for the nest-like MnO2/TiO2 sensor.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) hollow porous structures have attracted great attention in surface-related fields due to their advantages such as large specific surface area, high gas permeability, and low agglomeration. In this work, Al/Mo co-doped porous Co 3 O 4 hollow tetrahedrons derived from MOFs have been obtained using a simple solvothermal synthetic technique. Various characterizations have been used to analyze the crystalline and electronic structure. The results indicate that Al/Mo ions are successfully doped into the Co 3 O 4 lattice and 0.2 at% Al/Mo co-doped Co 3 O 4 shows the best sensing properties among the other Co 3 O 4 based samples. In particular, 0.2% Al/Mo-Co 3 O 4 exhibits the highest response values of 132–100 ppm TEA at 160 °C, which are 33 times as high as those of undoped Co 3 O 4 . Furthermore, 0.2% Al/Mo-Co 3 O 4 also displays rapid response and recovery speed (4 s/36 s), low detection limit (0.5 ppm), good selectivity and long-term stability. The reason of enhanced TEA sensing properties is ascribed to the occurrence of 3D hollow porous structure and coupling effect of Al/Mo co-doping. Thus, 0.2 at% Al/Mo co-doped porous Co 3 O 4 hollow tetrahedrons show promising applications in constructing high-performance chemical sensors for TEA detection.

Mo-Doped LaFeO3 Gas Sensors with Enhanced Sensing Performance for Triethylamine Gas

Abstract:Triethylamine is a common volatile organic compound (VOC) that plays an important role in areas such as organic solvents, chemical industries, dyestuffs, and leather treatments. However, exposure to triethylamine atmosphere can pose a serious threat to human health. In this study, gas-sensing semiconductor materials of LaFeO3 nano materials with different Mo-doping ratios were synthesized by the sol-gel method. The crystal structures, micro morphologies, and surface states of the prepared samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, and XPS, respectively. The gas-sensing tests showed that the Mo doping enhanced the gas-sensing performance of LaFeO3. Especially, the 4% Mo-doped LaFeO3 exhibited the highest response towards triethylamine (TEA) gas, a value approximately 11 times greater than that of pure LaFeO3. Meantime, the 4% Mo-doped LaFeO3 sensor showed a remarkably robust linear correlation between the response and the concentration (R2 = 0.99736). In addition, the selectivity, stability, response/recovery time, and moisture-proof properties were evaluated. Finally, the gas-sensing mechanism is discussed. This study provides an idea for exploring a new type of efficient and low-cost metal-doped LaFeO3 sensor to monitor the concentration of triethylamine gas for the purpose of safeguarding human health and safety.
Metal–organic framework-derived trimetallic oxides with dual sensing functions for ethanol

Abstract:Metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived metal oxide semiconductors have recently received extensive attention in gas sensing applications due to their high porosity and three-dimensional architecture. Still, challenges remain for MOF-derived materials, including low-cost and facile synthetic methods, rational nanostructure design, and superior gas-sensing performances. Herein, a series of Fe-MIL-88B-derived trimetallic FeCoNi oxides (FCN-MOS) with a mesoporous structure were synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal reaction followed by calcination. The FCN-MOS system consists of three main phases: α-Fe 2 O 3 (n-type), CoFe 2 O 4 , and NiFe 2 O 4 (p-type), and the nanostructure and pore size can be controlled by altering the content of α-Fe 2 O 3 , CoFe 2 O 4 , and NiFe 2 O 4 . The sensors based on FCN-MOS exhibit a high response of 71.9, a good selectivity towards 100 ppm ethanol at 250 °C, and long-term stability up to 60 days. Additionally, the FCN-MOS-based sensors show a p–n transition gas sensing behavior with the alteration of the Fe/Co/Ni ratio.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) derived oxide semiconductors have drawn more and more attention in many fields due to their unique structural merits. Herein, hierarchical flower-like Mo-doped Co3O4 derived Co-MOF has been synthesized through a solvothermal method and following annealing process. The gas sensing measurements show that the sensing properties of Mo-doped Co3O4 sample are far superior than that of pure Co3O4. In particular, 1 at% Mo-doped Co3O4 sample exhibits high response values of 92–50 ppm TEA at 180 °C, which are about 46 times than that of pure Co3O4 sample. In addition, it shows short recovery time (33 s), excellent gas selectivity, good repeatability and long-term stability. The improved gas sensing performance can be ascribed to Mo doping and hierarchical flower-like microstructure.

Abstract:Developing high-performance triethylamine (TEA) gas sensors are vital for human health. Defect engineering is a common method to enhance sensor performance. In this work, Cu-doped MoO 3 nanobelts with different Cu/Mo molar ratios were synthesized by a low-cost solvothermal method. The 7.5CM sensor (molar ratio of Cu/Mo=7.5%) exhibited a response value of 135 to 10 ppm TEA at 240 °C. The sensor also showed excellent selectivity and sub-ppm detection limit (12.5 ppb). Based on X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) analysis, the enhanced gas sensing performance and mechanism of Cu-doped MoO 3 were discussed. PALS results indicated that higher V′ Mo V o ·· V o ·· vacancy defect clusters content on the surface of Cu-doped MoO 3 . The enhanced gas sensing performance was attributed to the increased concentration of vacancies/vacancy clusters on the surface of MoO 3 nanobelts due to Cu doping, which facilitated the formation of surface chemisorbed oxygen and provided more active sites for the reaction of TEA. Additionally, CuMoO 4 nanocrystals formed in MoO 3 nanobelts can provide p-n heterojunctions on the surface, which generates potential barrier, enabling a wide variation range for the resistance of the sensor. This work provided a simple and effective method for the application of defect engineering in gas sensing materials.

Abstract:This study explores the development of a gas sensor based on SnO 2 /NiO heterostructures for detecting volatile organic compounds (VOCs), notably triethylamine (TEA). The sensor's operational principles, including TEA molecule interaction with adsorbed oxygen and electron transfer mechanisms affecting sensor resistance, are thoroughly analyzed. SnO 2 /NiO core–shell heterojunction nanowires were synthesized via a vapor–liquid–solid (VLS) and hydrothermal process. Characterization techniques such as field-emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission transmission electron microscopy (FE-TEM) with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and nitrogen gas adsorption (BET method) were employed. Experimental results demonstrate exceptional sensor performance at 300 °C, showing rapid response and recovery to TEA with high stability over extended use. This research highlights the promise of SnO 2 /NiO heterostructures for advanced gas-sensing applications, surpassing conventional sensor technologies.

Abstract:A 3D α-MoO3 nanostructure for high-performance triethylamine (TEA) detection was synthesized via the facial oxidation of MoS2 nanoflowers (NFs) obtained by a hydrothermal process. The influence of the time of hydrothermal process in growing MoS2 on the morphologies of the final MoO3 obtained after calcination was investigated. As-obtained MoO3 and their precursors were systematically characterized by various techniques, such as X-ray diffraction, Raman, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms. Results showed that MoO3 with a hierarchical layered nanostructure was successfully obtained. After hydrothermal treatment of the MoS2 precursor for 20 h, the typical MoO3-based sensor (called M20) exhibited a high response of 2.42 at a very low TEA concentration of only 0.1 ppm at 240 °C. The M20 sensor response to 50 ppm TEA was as high as 125 with a fast response/recovery time of 14/22 s. Moreover, the sensor had a high stability and reproducibility as well as a high selectivity against other interfering VOCs or gases. Due to the tendency of TEA to adsorb to active oxygen sites of MoO3, the enhanced sensing properties of MoO3 can be ascribed to the remarkable hierarchical structure and large surface area. MoO3 obtained after calcination of hydrothermally grown MoS2 is thus a promising sensing material for enhanced TEA gas detection.
