Abstract:OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to analyze the attitudes and conduct of hospital cleaning staff regarding cleaning and hand hygiene.METHODS: In May and June 2014, the cleaning staff of Elazig Training and Research Hospital participated in this descriptive research. Data was collected by a survey prepared by the researchers. The SPSS program was used to analyze the data.RESULTS: Of the participants, 70.3% of them were male and their mean age was 38.69 ± 6.61. The percentage of those hand washing before starting work was 29.8% for primary school graduates or those with lower education. For those with higher levels of education, the percentage was 68.2% (p < 0.001). The percentage of participants who wash their hands after work was 54.3% for primary school graduates and those with lower levels of education. For those with a higher level of education, the percentage was 84.1% (p < 0.001). The participants' use of personal protective equipment during work was that 97.8% of them used gloves, 39.9% bonnets and 56.5% medical masks.CONCLUSIONS: The attitudes and conduct of the cleaning staff are not sufficiently hygienic. These employees need training before and throughout their employment.

Compliance and Knowledge of Healthcare Workers Regarding Hand Hygiene and Use of Disinfectants: A Study Based in Karachi

Abstract:Background Hand hygiene is the cardinal step in combating various healthcare-associated infections. These infections are a cause of 37,000 deaths in Europe and 100,000 deaths in the United States annually. Thus, prevention of their spread is of utmost importance today. A study conducted in a tertiary care center in Karachi found that 17% of the medical professionals were aware of the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines on hand hygiene while only 4.9% followed these hand-washing techniques. Lack of hand hygiene practice and awareness has raised a need to reassess infection control in hospitals. There is currently undisputed proof that adherence to hand cleanliness diminishes the danger of transmission of various infections. Methods A questionnaire-based cross-sectional study was conducted at Dr. Ruth K.M. Pfau Civil Hospital, Karachi in January 2019. Data from 212 participants who met the inclusion criteria were analyzed. A three-part questionnaire was used for the hospital staff who had been present at the hospital for at least six hours and had attended to the patients during the last three continuous working days. Staff members who visited the hospital but did not attend to any patients or those who had been present at the hospital for less than six hours were excluded. Collected data were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 23.0 (IBM, Armonk, NY). Results A total of 212 individuals (74 doctors, 66 nurses, 52 technicians, and 20 ward assistants) agreed to participate in our study, of which 124 were females. The compliance with hand disinfectant use before and after every patient contact was found to be 12.3%. The use of disinfectant was found to be more among males than females (mean 7.88 times for males vs. 6.20 for females) and the younger individuals were more compliant with hand hygiene practices; 62.73% of participants were aware of the WHO guidelines regarding hand hygiene and 65.56% were aware of hospital-acquired infections. However, nearly half of the participants (45.75%) had never attended a formal lecture on the subject and more than half (62.26%) of the participants were unenlightened about the complications of hospital-acquired infections. Conclusions Hand hygiene is a basic requirement for every medic and paramedic in a hospital setting today. Keeping in mind the drastic consequences of the spread of hospital-associated infections, it is evident that hand hygiene should be stressed upon. The rising incidence of nosocomial infections and their complications can be prevented by raising awareness about hand hygiene practices. There is a need to further investigate the application of and adherence to the basic guidelines on hand hygiene. Our results indicate that this issue should be tackled through a multidimensional approach.
Association between Hand Hygiene Knowledge and Self-Efficacy in Nursing Students: A Multicenter Cross-Sectional Study within the Framework of the Erasmus Project

Abstract:Adherence to hand hygiene procedures is crucial for all populations, and the World Health Organization (WHO) has implemented specific guidelines for infection control. Frequent and correct hand hygiene can prevent infections, but non-compliance with hand hygiene is pervasive. Nursing students address this issue from the beginning of their training. In nursing training, self-efficacy is crucial in enhancing students' competence, motivation, and clinical performance. We performed a cross-sectional multicenter study in five European countries, with a cross-sectional design with an online application of an instrument measuring hand hygiene knowledge based on WHO guidelines and general self-efficacy and specific self-efficacy for infection control. A total of 638 first-year nursing students participated in this study. The mean percentage of correct answers was 67.9%, with a considerable difference depending on the items. The worst results were obtained for questions related to sources of infection and types of hand hygiene methods in different situations. Finnish students displayed significantly (p < 0.001) higher scores in HH knowledge, whereas Estonian students had significantly (p < 0.001) higher levels of self-efficacy. There were significant correlations between the hand hygiene knowledge score and the self-efficacy score (p < 0.001). A multivariate analysis by linear regression analysis showed significant associations between the hand hygiene knowledge survey score and the students' age (p < 0.001, OR = 0.18, 95% CI 0.04-0.10), as well as their country of origin (p = 0.01, OR = 0.09, 95% CI 0.03-0.34). HH knowledge is quite low among nursing students, and is correlated with self-efficacy, although the strongest predictors are age and country of origin. Different nursing curricula must favor HH knowledge, with varying degrees of emphasis depending on the country.

Abstract:Background:Practising hand hygiene is essential in minimizing morbidity and mortality in surgical services. Compliance with proper hand hygiene is reportedly lacking among house surgeons (CRRIS) and nursing trainees that need to be addressed as formal training prior to posting is not in the curriculum. Objective: 1. To undertake a gap analysis in knowledge, attitudes, and practice compliances in HH among CRRIS and graduate nursing trainees at KIMS, a tertiary teaching hospital 2. To compare facilities, knowledge, attitudes, practices, and satisfaction. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional Institutional-based study for a period of 6 months among 90 CRRIS and 60 Nursing trainees. WHO hand hygiene questionnaire was used to assess Knowledge and prevalidated structured questionnaire was used to assess Attitude and practice. Z test was used to compare the percentage of correct responses of the two study groups. Result: A significant difference with a p-value of 0.0025 was observed as the most frequent source of germs responsible for healthcare-associated infections. The attitude regarding correct hand hygiene practices to be followed at all times was found to be better among nurses (62.5%) as compared to residents (21.3%) which was found to be highly significant with p-a a value <0.001. Conclusion: Our study highlights the need for training sessions regarding hand hygiene practices among the CRRIS and nursing students to provide the current knowledge in the area with a change in attitudes, approaches, and practices leading to the reduction of nosocomial infections.

Abstract:Objectives: Comparative study on knowledge of proper hand hygiene among junior resident doctors, junior nurses, and undergraduate medical students and recommendation to improve its awareness at the level of Tertiary Health Care. Methods: An institution-based cross-sectional study conducted among undergraduate medical students, junior doctors, and junior nurses at the tertiary care hospital of government medical college, for a period of 3 months duration. The selection of study subjects was done by purposive sampling method from each respective group of health service providers. A self-structured closed-ended questionnaire related to hand hygiene knowledge with the help of the “WHO hand hygiene questionnaire for Health Workers” and the knowledge was assessed. Appropriate software SPSS version 21 applied for analysis. Results: Overall response rate of participants was 95%. Moderate number (69.9%) of health-care providers knew about the “common route of transmission of microbes” while knowledge of “germs on or around the patient be frequent source of infection” was poor (21.8%). The knowledge of medical students (63.9%) and junior doctors (60%) was found to be significantly higher than nurses (5.6%), (p=0.001) for “both hand rub and hand washing are equally effective against microbes.” Overall, low level of knowledge for hand hygiene was among nurses (16.7%), doctors (14%), and medical students (34.7%). Conclusions: Most respondents show moderate knowledge for hand hygiene but there is still need of raising awareness for proper hand hygiene while providing health-care services to patient.

Abstract:Introduction: Healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs) and emerging multi-drug resistance in nosocomial pathogens are perceived as a serious public health threat. Hands of healthcare workers (HCWs) become routinely colonized during patient care, serving as vehicles for transmission and leading to HCAIs. Hand hygiene (HH) is a globally accepted tool to avoid the broadcast of dangerous microorganisms and prevent HCAIs. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out to evaluate the knowledge, attitude, and practice toward HH among the medical students at Saveetha Medical College, Chennai, India. A 25-item validated questionnaire survey was formulated and circulated to 100 medical students of all four academic years. Results: There were 100 responses to the survey, and 44 (44%) participants performed HH appropriately for 20 seconds with alcohol-based hand rub. In our study, 25％ of the participants revealed that HH practices were not followed during emergencies. Many participants (40%) stated that the lack of sink, soaps, alcohol-based sanitizers, paper towels, and water is the reason for not performing HH. Conclusions: The gross knowledge of HH of the participants is moderate, but there were gaps between the knowledge and practice. Hence, it is essential to conduct structured training sessions and surveillance programs for medical students to address these gaps in knowledge and the correct HH procedures.

Abstract:Background: One of the most crucial methods for preventing the spread of infections in the health care system is hand hygiene (HH). Health Care Professionals (HCPs) place a high value on HH knowledge, attitude, and practice, and non-compliance may have unfavorable effects. Objectives: This study, which is being conducted at the CMH Multan Institute of Medical Sciences (CIMS), Multan, Pakistan (PK), aims to evaluate and compare the knowledge, attitude, and practice of medical students in their clinical year, interns, and between male and female students while also identifying knowledge gaps. Methods: This study was cross-sectional in nature. 188 medical apprentices and students enrolled in the clinical year (99 men and 89 women). From the beginning of February 2022 till June 2022, five months, this study was finished. The standard self-structured hand hygiene (HH) questionnaire was utilized, and Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS-20) was used to analyze the results. Results: 188 students overall, both male and female, responded to the survey. About 92% (173 out of 188) of the responders were in the 18–24 age range. In general, it was discovered that clinical year medical students at CIMS, Multan, Pakistan, had a moderate level of knowledge, attitude, and behaviors about hand cleanliness (50% -75%). In terms of HH, female participants had better attitudes and knowledge than male participants (i.e., >75%), but there was no difference in terms of practice. Conclusion: Concerning hand hygiene, there are ‘overall’ satisfactory knowledge, attitude and practice towards HH. Future research in this field should focus on both self- reported responses and directly observed data to assess the practical application of good hand hygiene practices. Abstract:Objective To understand undergraduate medical students' knowledge about hand hygiene.Methods By means of the self-designed questionnaire, a survey was made with 110 medical students of Grade 4, a class randomly chosen in some medical university.The questionnaires were filled in and handed back on the spot.Results Medical students' knowledge about hand hygiene was inadequate, with the rate of correct answering to objective questions being only 41.5%, and that concerned with the content, target and criterion of hand hygiene and the zoning off of the hospital were 12.7%, 19.1%, 30.9% and 12.7%, respectively.The rates of correctly answering questions of hand contamination incurred situations, hand-washing requiring situations during ward checking, glove type selection and whether hand washing can be replaced by glove wearing were 59.1%, 60.9%, 51.8% and 91.8%, respectively.Conclusion Medical students' knowledge of hand hygiene is insufficient.It is imperative that education on hand hygiene jointly by hospitals and colleges be conducted.

Abstract:Introduction: Hand hygiene is crucial to prevent cross infection. Healthcare students are in a prime position to learn hand hygiene skills. The aim of this study was to analyze hand hygiene behavioral intentions of healthcare students before and after contact with the patient and to compare the knowledge of and attitude towards hand hygiene between medical and nursing students. Methods: In a descriptive survey research design, convenience selection of a sample of medical students (n=657) and nursing students (n=303) was done from modules taught by the Department of Preventive Medicine and Public Health in both Medicine and Nursing undergraduate degrees in four Spanish universities. The hand hygiene Questionnaire, a validated instrument to evaluate behavior, knowledge, and attitudes, was used. Results: A significantly lower percentage of students reported always or almost always carrying out hand hygiene before contact with the patient or invasive procedures in comparison to the percentage complying after contact with secretions or with the patient. Although hand hygiene knowledge appears acceptable, its importance is not sufficiently valued. Conclusions: There are deficiencies in behavioral intention, knowledge, and attitudes related to hand hygiene in medical and nursing students. Better results are observed among nursing students, especially those who have received specific training.
Impediments to Compliance with Hand Hygiene among Medical and Dental Students in Medical and Dental College

Abstract:Introduction: Hand hygiene is the first line of defense and a cost-effective method for reducing healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs) and antibiotic resistance. It is essential for healthcare professionals to have adequate knowledge regarding hand hygiene. Ensuring proper education of trainees is required as they are the healthcare providers of the future. Aim: To assess the impediments that both medical and dental trainees face in performing effective hand hygiene. Materials and Methods: The study questionnaire based on WHO’s concepts of "Five Moments for Hand Hygiene" and “Six Steps of Hand Hygiene” was sent to 225 participants from 2nd & 3rd MBBS and BDS courses. Associations between variables of interest were tested using the chi-square (χ2) test. Statistical analysis was carried out using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 17. The p-value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Total 184 (81.9%) students from medical and 41(18.2%) from dental stream participated, 118 out of 225 were females and 107 were males. Out of 225, 175 (77.8%) participants used soap and water, 32 (14.2%) used hand rub. Also 98 out of 225 (43.6%) participants think that because of workload the steps of handwashing were missed. The various facilities like access to water, wash basin, soap, hand-rub, facilities for drying hands required for hand hygiene may be lacking as per 31.6% participants. It was noticed that 96 out of 225 (42.7%) use hand rub for less than 10 seconds duration, 86 (38.2%) for 11-20 seconds, 30 (13.3%) for 21-30 seconds while only 13(5.8%) used hand-rub for than 30 seconds. For performing handwash, 141 out of 225 (62.7%) used cloth towel, 62(27.6%) used paper-towel and 22(9.8%) used dryer for drying hands. 205 out of 225 (91.1%) participants think increasing the frequency of training and audits will help in improving the hand hygiene. Conclusion: Formal training in of hand hygiene needs to be incorporated in teaching at the undergraduate level which would ensure adequate and appropriate utilization of resources. Provision of adequate hand hygiene supplies, particularly soap and facilities for drying hands needs to be ensured. Abstract:Amaç: Hastanede çalışan temizlik personeli ve hasta bakıcıların hastane enfeksiyonlarından korunma, tıbbi atık kontrolü ve el hijyeni konularında aldıkları eğitimler ve uygulamaları; hem hasta hem de çalışan sağlığı açısından önemlidir. Bu çalışmada; bir üniversite hastanesinde görev yapmakta olan temizlik personeli, hasta bakıcılara, hastane enfeksiyonları ve bu enfeksiyonlardan korunma yolları konularında verilen önceki eğitim bilgilerinin ve aynı konularda yeniden düzenlenerek verilen sonraki eğitim etkinliğinin değerlendirilmesi amaçlanmıştır. Yöntemler: Çalışmaya katılanların aynı konuda önceden aldığı eğitim sayıları listelenip, ön test, interaktif eğitim ve ardından son test uygulanmıştır. Verilerin analizinde ki-kare testi, McNemar testi, bağımlı gruplarda t testi, faktöriyel kovaryans analizi (ANCOVA) ve Pearson korelasyon analizi kullanılmıştır. P<0,05 değeri istatistiksel olarak anlamlı kabul edilmiştir. Bulgular: Çalışanların %63,6’sı hasta bakıcı, %36,4’ü temizlik personeli idi. %57,1’i dahili branşlarda, %25,6’sı cerrahi branşlarda ve %17,2’si çamaşırhane gibi diğer birimlerde görev yapıyordu. Katılımcılarda şu ana kadar benzer konularda eğitim alma ortancası 9 (1-17) idi. Temas izolasyonu uygulamasını doğru bilme, hasta bakıcılarda temizlik çalışanlarına göre (p=0,01), dahili birimde çalışanlarda diğer bölümlerde çalışanlara göre (p=0,001) yüksekti. Katılımcıların konuyla ilişkili aldıkları eğitimin sayısı ile eğitim öncesinde yapılan ön testte doğru bilinen soru sayısı arasında anlamlı bir ilişki bulunmadı (p>0,05). Sonuç: Araştırmamızda hastane enfeksiyonlarını önleme konusunda alınan eğitimin sayısı ile ön testte doğru bilinen soru sayısı arasında bir ilişki bulunamamış olması; bizlere yapılan eğitimlerin gözden geçirilmesi, ayrıca çalışanların verilen eğitim konuları konusunda çalıştıkları birimlerde gözlemlenmesi gerekliliğini düşündürmüştür.
Health Science Students' Perceptions of Hand Hygiene Education and Practice in a South African University: Introducing the University Hand Hygiene Improvement Model

Abstract:Hand hygiene serves as a critical preventative measure against the spread of acquired infections in healthcare facilities and is an integral component of patient safety programs. While healthcare students in training are typically introduced to the principles underlying hand hygiene, the translation of this understanding into practice is often lacking, and compliance has remained low. This study aimed to evaluate health science students' in biomedical sciences, chiropractic and emergency medical care, environmental health, complementary medicine, medical imaging and radiation sciences, nursing, optometry, podiatry, and sports and movement studies perceptions regarding hand hygiene education (knowledge and attitude) and practice at a university in South Africa. Consenting students were asked to complete an online questionnaire that tested their knowledge, practices, and skills in handwashing. The ANOVA analysis results suggested significant differences in hand hygiene scores across departments and years of study. The multiple regression analyses confirmed these findings, suggesting that the department of study significantly influenced all aspects of hand hygiene, while the year of study affected hand hygiene skills, and age group influenced hand hygiene practices. Based on these findings, a conceptual model, the University Hand Hygiene Improvement Model (UHHIM), was proposed to enhance the teaching and learning of hand hygiene at the university level. The model underscores the necessity of targeted education, continuous monitoring, and feedback, and the pivotal roles of hand hygiene facilitators and student participation in enhancing hand hygiene behaviors.

Abstract:Abstract Background This study aims to assess the hand hygiene behavior of nursing students and identify the factors influencing this behavior through the “Scale for Assessment Hand Washing Behavior in the Frame of Theory of Planned Behaviour (SAHBTPB)”. Methods This descriptive and cross-sectional study was undertaken at the nursing departments of the university’s faculty of health sciences in İzmir, Turkey between 2021 and 2022. A total of 240 nursing students were recruited as participants for this study. Data were collected with the SAHBTPB. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Chi-square test, and correlation analysis in the SPSS 21.0 program ( p < .05). Results Participation rate was 74.76%. The mean age of the students was 20.59 ± 1.59 years and 69.9% were woman. The nursing students’ total mean score of SAHBTPB was 147.5 ± 14.0 (min = 94; max = 176). There was a positively significant association between the total score and students’ gender, graduate level, and hand hygiene education status. There was no significant difference in scale total score mean based on the existence of dermatological problems on the students’ hands or their frequency of hand hygiene ( p > .05). Conclusion The mean scores of nursing students on the SAHBTPB were found to be at a good level. The sub-dimension “intention” was identified as an effective factor in predicting the hand hygiene behavior of the students. The findings have the potential to positively impact nursing education by increasing awareness among students and offering valuable insights for nurses and educators.

World Health Organisation (WHO) has taken an incredible approach called "My Five Moments for Hand Hygiene" which defines the key moments when health-care workers should perform hand hygiene. We thus carried out a survey to assess knowledge of hand hygiene practices among undergraduate medical students. Materials and methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 523 Indian medical undergraduates. The questionnaire used was adapted from the WHO hand hygiene knowledge questionnaire for health-care workers and was distributed both, in print and online formats. The response to each question was examined using percentages. Results Nearly 57% (n=298) of medical students who participated in this study did not receive any formal training in hand hygiene. Only 27% (n=141) students knew that the most frequent source of germs responsible for health-care associated infections were the germs already present on or within the patient. Nearly 68.6% (n= 359) students were unaware of the sequence of hand washing and hand rubbing. Although 71.9% (n=376 ) students claimed that they use an alcohol-based hand rub routinely, only 36.1% (n=189 ) students knew the time required for a hand rub to kill the germs on the hands. Overall hand hygiene knowledge was low in 6.9% (n=36), moderate in 80.9% (n=423) and good in 12.2% (n=23) of respondents. Conclusions The awareness about hand hygiene practices among medical students is low. Nearly 57% (n=298) of the respondents never received any formal training in hand hygiene throughout their course of medical undergraduate study. To prevent the spread of infections in healthcare settings, medical students should be given proper training in hand hygiene practices right from the first year of the medical curriculum. This should be done by running workshops and annual seminars on hand hygiene practices and making it a requisite for clinical skills assessment.

Abstract:Background: Hand hygiene protocols, if followed stringently reduce the possibility of the spread of infection from healthcare workers (HCWs) to patients, to almost 99%. However, in actual practice, compliance of these protocols is poor. Aims: (1) To observe the practice of hand hygiene among HCWs and (2) assess knowledge and awareness regarding hand hygiene protocol and identify the factors hampering its effective practice. Prospective observational study at an multispeciality hospital. Patients and Methods: Consultants, junior doctors, nursing in-charges and nurses and ancillary staff like ward attendants, ward secretaries, housekeeping staff and lift operators were (1) Observed during their hand hygiene practice and (2) 200 of these HCWs were provided a written questionnaire, in order to assess their depth of hand hygiene knowledge. Data were studied and analysed. Results: Female HCWs, right from consultants to ward attendants and ancillary workers showed better knowledge and compliance with hand hygiene practices. The junior nurses, interns and junior residents were more compliant with hand hygiene procedures in comparison to consultants and in-charge nurses. Hand hygiene compliance was poor in outpatient department, particularly on days with heavy workloads. Lack of knowledge regarding hand hygiene was observed amongst ancillary staff. Conclusions: The study emphasised stringent compliance and constant re-enforcement of protocol of correct hand hygiene practice amongst HCWs including ancillary staff.

Abstract:Aims: Hand hygiene (HH) is an essential practice to evade the transmission of germs and minimize community-acquired infections. This study assesses the knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) of HH and other health and safety measures before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic. in university students in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire study was conducted between December 2022 and March 2023, targeting university students from all disciplines and study levels. A 44-item questionnaire was used which included student demographics, knowledge, attitude, and practice of HH, as well as the anticipated risk of COVID-19 morbidity and mortality. Participants consented before commencing the questionnaire, and the collected data were analysed using the student's t-test and ANOVA test, as required. Results: A total of 378 responses were received nationwide, with a valid response rate of 98%. The HH knowledge revealed an average score of 62%, which was significantly higher in students with moderate family income. Additionally, the average attitude score was 74.7%, as measured on the Likert scale, and the score lacked any correlation with the other variables. HH practice showed an average score of 86.8%, which was correlated with the students' gender and field of study. Conclusions: This study showed a moderate level of knowledge, a good attitude, and good practice around HH and other safety measures among the UAE's university students. Socioeconomic status, gender, and field of study influenced the study outcomes. This study highlights the need for effective awareness campaigns to reinforce students' health and safety, especially for male and non-health science students, in order to protect against communicable diseases.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Hand hygiene competence is one of the critical outcomes in nursing education. Ensuring nursing students recognize the what, when and how of hand hygiene is critical in the light of the increasing rates of healthcare-associated infections.AIM: To systematically appraise and synthesize articles on hand hygiene knowledge and compliance among nursing students.METHODS: This is a systematic review of scientific articles published from 2006 to 2016. The primary databases used were as follows: PubMed, Embase, Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature, Proquest and PsychINFO. Key search terms utilized were as follows: 'handwashing', 'hand hygiene', 'compliance', 'knowledge', 'practice' and 'nursing students'.FINDINGS: Nineteen studies met the review criteria. The findings revealed a low-to-moderate knowledge of and compliance with hand hygiene among nursing students. In addition, there were significantly higher rates of hand hygiene compliance in nursing students when compared to medical students. Relatively few studies attempted to identify predictors of hand hygiene knowledge and compliance.CONCLUSION: This review demonstrated suboptimal knowledge and compliance to hand hygiene among student nurses. In addition, this review also highlighted the paucity of studies that examined individual and organizational factors, which influence nursing students hand hygiene knowledge and compliance.IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING AND POLICY: The findings of this review emphasized the role of nurse educators in enhancing hand hygiene competence in nursing students. Implementation of empirically tested strategies such as utilizing multidimensional interventions, scenario-based hand hygiene simulation activities and hand hygiene education programmes that would enhance nursing students' hand hygiene knowledge and compliance is an asset. Hospital and nursing administrators should ensure continuous support and monitoring to guarantee that hand hygiene programmes are institutionalized in every healthcare setting by every healthcare worker.

Abstract:Purpose. The present study investigated the knowledge and practice of hand hygiene among entry-level nursing students at King Saud University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Participants and Methods: A cross-sectional, institutional-based study was conducted among Saudi nursing students over a period of four months at the King Saud University College of Nursing, using a structured, self-administered questionnaire that assessed demographics, knowledge, and the practice of hand washing. Results. A response rate of 95% was obtained. Of the 304 respondents, 66.1% (n = 201) were males. The majority of the students (94.2%) agreed that direct or indirect contact was the most important route for the transmission of healthcare-associated infection. In addition, most of the students washed their hands after contact with body secretions (89.5%), while 83.2% of them washed their hands before and after contact with patients. Furthermore, 83.6% of them applied soap water during hand washing, while 59.9% of the students used an alcohol-based hand rub for hand hygiene. Our results found that female students reported higher mean knowledge score of 10.09 ± 1.27, compared to male students 9.63 ± 1.48, indicating a significant association between the mean knowledge score of hand washing and gender ( p = 0.004 ). Similarly, the mean practice score was higher among female students (5.00 ± 1.25), in comparison to male students 4.62 ± 1.46, with a significant association between gender and mean practice score ( p = 0.037 ). Conclusion. The findings of this study revealed that Saudi nursing students exhibit adequate knowledge and practice of hand washing. However, the current findings revealed variation in the knowledge and practice scores with respect to gender. The present results could support students and health care professionals in improving their hygienic practice, which may help to provide the optimum therapeutic benefits to patients.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: Hand hygiene play crucial role in infectious control. The present research is on accessing Knowledge, attitude, and practice of nursing staff regarding hand washing. Human hands are covered with several commensal and pathogenic microorganism. Pathogenic bacterial species especially Staphylococcus species are the most common to participate in nosocomial infections.METHODS: Total 300 hand swab samples were taken from 150 nursing staffs followed by filling the questionnaire form. Standard culture media (Blood agar and MacConkey agar) were used to isolate the microorganisms. Microbial identification was done by using standard biochemical tests.RESULTS: Our study concluded that over all staff members had moderate knowledge and attitude regarding hand washing. Coagulase-negative Staphylococcus isolates were the most dominant bacteria. Occurrence of Staphylococcus aureus was relatively less.CONCLUSIONS: Creating awareness and education regarding hand hygiene would definitely increase the attitude and practice of health care workers to minimizing the nosocomial infection.

Abstract:Background: Nosocomial infections are particularly common among hospitalized patients who undergo resuscitation compared with other types of care. Hand hygiene remains the simplest and most effective measure to prevent and control the risk of infection. Objective: The main objectives are to evaluate hand hygiene compliance among nursing staff in the different intensive care units and to identify the factors influencing the adherence of nursing staff to the practice. Methods: It was a quantitative descriptive study using a questionnaire and an observation grid with all the nursing staff working in all the intensive care units of our university hospital. Results: The study showed a hand contamination rate of (80%), a hand hygiene compliance rate of (21.3%), it also showed the different factors explaining non-adherence, these are not necessarily related to training, nor to the availability of material resources but related to hidden reasons, non-apparent factors, which are often more important. (Workload and work environment) Conclusion: This study examined hand hygiene in the ICU setting, obtained data on overall compliance, which remains poor, and the various factors influencing nurses' adherence to the practice.
